This paper introduces a robust and imperceptible video watermarking framework designed for blind extraction in dynamic video environments. The proposed method operates in the spatial domain and combines multiscale perceptual analysis, adaptive Just Noticeable Difference (JND)-based quantization, and temporal redundancy via multiframe embedding. Watermark bits are embedded selectively in blocks with high perceptual masking using a QIM strategy, and the corresponding DCT coefficients are estimated directly from the spatial domain to reduce complexity. To enhance resilience, each bit is redundantly inserted across multiple keyframes selected based on scene transitions. Extensive simulations over 21 benchmark videos (CIF, 4CIF, HD) validate that the method achieves superior performance in robustness and perceptual quality, with an average Bit Error Rate (BER) of 1.03%, PSNR of 50.1 dB, SSIM of 0.996, and VMAF of 97.3 under compression, noise, cropping, and temporal desynchronization. The system outperforms several recent state-of-the-art techniques in both quality and speed, requiring no access to the original video during extraction. These results confirm the method’s viability for practical applications such as copyright protection and secure video streaming. Full article

Biodiversity Patterns and Community Construction in Subtropical Forests Driven by Species Phylogenetic Environments

To explore the characteristics of species diversity and phylogenetic diversity, as well as the dominant processes of community construction, in different forest types (deciduous broad-leaved forest, mixed coniferous and broad-leaved forest, and Chinese fir plantation) in subtropical regions, analyze the specific driving patterns of soil nutrients and other environmental factors on the formation of forest diversity in different forest types, and clarify the differences in response to environmental heterogeneity between natural forests and plantation forests. Based on 48 fixed monitoring plots of 50 m × 50 m in Shouchang Forest Farm, Jiande City, Zhejiang Province, woody plants with a diameter at breast height ≥5 cm were investigated. Species diversity indices (Margalef index, Shannon–Wiener index, Simpson index, and Pielou index), phylogenetic structure index (PD), and environmental factors were used to analyze the relationship between diversity characteristics and environmental factors through variance analysis, correlation analysis, and generalized linear models. Phylogenetic structural indices (NRI and NTI) were used, combined with a random zero model, to explore the mechanisms of community construction in different forest types. Research has found that (1) the deciduous broad-leaved forest had the highest species diversity (Margalef index of 4.121 ± 1.425) and phylogenetic diversity (PD index of 21.265 ± 7.796), significantly higher than the mixed coniferous and broad-leaved forest and the Chinese fir plantation (p < 0.05); (2) there is a significant positive correlation between species richness and phylogenetic diversity, with the best fit being AIC = 70.5636 and R2 = 0.9419 in broad-leaved forests; however, the contribution of evenness is limited; (3) the specific effects of soil factors on different forest types: available phosphorus (AP) is negatively correlated with the diversity of deciduous broad-leaved forests (p < 0.05), total phosphorus (TP) promotes the diversity of coniferous and broad-leaved mixed forests, while the diversity of Chinese fir plantations is significantly negatively correlated with total nitrogen (TN); (4) the phylogenetic structure of three different forest types shows a divergent pattern in deciduous broad-leaved forests, indicating that competition and exclusion dominate the construction of deciduous broad-leaved forests; the aggregation mode of Chinese fir plantation indicates that environmental filtering dominates the construction of Chinese fir plantation; the mixed coniferous and broad-leaved forest is a transitional model, indicating that the mixed coniferous and broad-leaved forest is influenced by both stochastic processes and ecological niche processes. In different forest types in subtropical regions, the species and phylogenetic diversity of broad-leaved forests is significantly higher than in other forest types. The impact of soil nutrients on the diversity of different forest types varies, and the characteristics of community construction in different forest types are also different. This indicates the importance of protecting the original vegetation and provides a scientific basis for improving the ecological function of artificial forest ecosystems through structural adjustment. The research results have important practical guidance value for sustainable forest management and biodiversity conservation in the region. Full article

The present study focuses on the attractiveness and perceived value of differentiated quality labels, such as the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) and Protected Geographical Indication (PGI), for agri-food products from Extremadura (Spain). In doing so, it addresses a gap in the scientific literature concerning consumer behavior toward products bearing these certifications. The results show that awareness of these quality schemes is significantly higher among middle-aged and older individuals, underscoring the need for more modern and targeted communication strategies. The findings highlight the strategic role of agri-food marketing in promoting certified products and emphasize the importance of bridging the generational gap in consumer education. Overall, differentiated quality schemes are perceived as strategic tools to enhance the competitiveness of local products, strengthen cultural identity, and foster sustainable rural economies. Furthermore, this study identifies a negative relationship between the consumption of certified products and the awareness of certification and a positive relationship with the willingness to pay a premium. Consumers with greater awareness tend consume these products less, although they are more willing to pay higher prices for items bearing quality labels. Full article

The IREQ (Insulation REQuired) index is the only reliable and effective model for predicting and evaluating the protection given by a clothing ensemble in cold environments. Even with the growth of studies aimed at assessing the thermophysical characteristics of clothing, IREQ remained unaltered from Holmér’s original formulation four decades prior. This paper focuses on the effect of the evaluation of the clothing area factor and the resultant vapour resistance on the assessment of cold environments via IREQ. Obtained results reveal meaningful variations in the duration limit exposure (up to 5 h), whereas IREQ values remain unchanged. Observed phenomena could be interesting when discussing the revision of the ISO 11079 standard, which prescribes using IREQ for the determination and interpretation of cold stress. Full article

This study proposes a design method for near-slope roads along multi-level slopes that integrates excavation requirements and post-construction ecological restoration through sprayed eco-protection. Firstly, the design principles and procedural steps for near-slope roads are established. The planar layouts of multi-level slopes are categorized, including mixing areas, turnaround areas, berms, and access ramps. Critical technical parameters, such as curve radii and widths of berms and ramps, as well as dimensional specifications for turnaround areas, are systematically formulated with corresponding design formulas. The methodology is applied to the ecological restoration project of multi-level slopes in the Huamahu mountainous area, and a comparative technical-economic analysis is conducted between the proposed design and the original scheme. Results demonstrate that the optimized design reduces additional maintenance costs caused by near-slope roads by 6.5–8.0% during the curing period. This research advances the technical framework for multi-level slope governance and enhances the ecological design standards for slope protection engineering. Full article

Drug repurposing or drug repositioning is the process of identifying new therapeutic uses for approved or investigational drugs beyond the original treatment indication. The discovery of new drugs for cancer therapy needs this cost-effective and time-saving alternative strategy to traditional drug development for a rapid clinical translation in Phase II/III studies, especially for unmet medical needs and rare diseases. Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) are a heterogeneous group of rare neoplasms arising from cells of the neuroendocrine system that, though often indolent, can be aggressive and metastatic. In this context, drug repurposing has emerged as a promising strategy to improve treatment options due to the limited number of effective treatments and the heterogeneity of the disease. Indeed, a large number of non-oncology drugs have the potential to address more than one target that could be therapeutic for cancer patients. Although many repurposed drugs are used off-label, efficacy for the new use must be demonstrated in clinical trials. Within regulatory frameworks, both the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) have procedures to reduce the need for extensive new studies and to expedite the review of drugs for serious conditions when preliminary evidence indicates substantial clinical improvement over available therapy. In spite of several advantages, including reduced development time, lower costs, known safety profiles, and faster regulatory approval, difficulty in obtaining new patents for old drugs with limited protection for intellectual property may reduce commercial returns and disincentivize investments. This review aims to provide comprehensive information on some marketed drugs currently under investigation to be repurposed or used in clinical practice for NETs and to discuss the major clinical challenges. Although drug repurposing is a useful strategy for early access to medicines, the monitoring of the clinical benefit of oncologic drugs during the post-marketing authorization is crucial to support the safety and effectiveness of treatments. This paper explores the impact of applying a powder additive in the form of halloysite and mullite on the thermal protection properties of a composite. The authors used CES R70 epoxy resin with CES H72 hardener, modified by varying the amount of powder additive. The composite samples were exposed to a mixture of combustible gases at a temperature of approximately 1000 °C. The primary parameters analyzed during this study were the temperature on the rear surface of the sample and the ablative mass loss of the tested material. The temperature increase on the rear surface of the sample, which was exposed to the hot stream of flammable gases, was measured for 120 s. Another key parameter considered in the data analysis was the ablative mass loss. The charred layer of the sample played a crucial role in this process, as it helped block oxygen diffusion from the boundary layer of the original material. This charred layer absorbed thermal energy until it reached a temperature at which it either oxidized or was mechanically removed due to the erosive effects of the heating factor. The incorporation of mullite reduced the rear surface temperature from 58.9 °C to 49.2 °C, and for halloysite, it was reduced the rear surface temperature to 49.8 °C. The ablative weight loss dropped from 57% to 18.9% for mullite and to 39.9% for halloysite. The speed of mass ablation was reduced from 77.9 mg/s to 25.2 mg/s (mullite) and 52.4 mg/s (halloysite), while the layer thickness loss decreased from 7.4 mm to 2.8 mm (mullite) and 4.4 mm (halloysite). This research is innovative in its use of halloysite and mullite as functional additives to enhance the ablative resistance of polymer composites under extreme thermal conditions. This novel approach not only contributes to a deeper understanding of composite behavior at high temperatures but also opens up new avenues for the development of advanced thermal protection systems. Potential applications of these materials include aerospace structures, fire-resistant components, and protective coatings in environments exposed to intense heat and flame. Full article

In the last two decades, the prevalence of South Asian migrant workers has significantly increased in the UAE’s construction sector, and they are under huge debt. Although researchers heavily stress the role of employers in migrant workers’ debt, the role of debt before departure has not been investigated. Thus, this study bridges this gap in the literature in the context of South Asian construction migrant workers. The objective of this study is to investigate how informal recruitment fees and debt arrangements contribute to bonded labor and dependency among migrant workers. A qualitative approach was used to conduct in-depth interviews with 30 South Asian migrants employed in the construction sector. This article highlights how pre-migration debt—which is often accrued through informal loans and exploitative recruitment fees—has been underexplored in migration studies. Drawing on interviews with 30 South Asian laborers, this study identifies five interconnected themes: pre-migration debt bondage, exploitative lending practices, lack of legal recourse, emotional manipulation, and a cycle of dependency. While UAE labor policies have improved, the real vulnerabilities lie in the informal recruitment systems and weak oversight in migrant workers’ countries of origin. Consequently, five themes were generated from the analysis: pre-migration debt bondage, exploitative lending practices, no legal recourse, emotional manipulation, and cycles of dependency. This study contributes to our existing knowledge by revealing the experiences of migrant construction workers from South Asia in the UAE. While the UAE has established one of the region’s most progressive legal frameworks to protect migrant workers and set clear labor standards, many exploitative practices occur outside its jurisdiction, particularly in the workers’ countries of origin. This study underscores that the root of the problem lies in weak enforcement and informal recruitment networks in sending countries, not in UAE policy itself. Addressing these challenges requires coordinated international action to ensure that migrant protection begins well before arrival. Full article

Rapid socio-economic development and the impact of human activities have exerted tremendous pressure on the groundwater system of the Dawen River Basin (DRB), the largest tributary in the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River. Hydrochemical studies on the DRB have largely centered on the upstream Muwen River catchment and downstream Dongping Lake, with some focusing solely on karst groundwater. Basin-wide evaluations suggest good overall groundwater quality, but moderate to severe contamination is confined to the lower Dongping Lake area. The hydrogeologically complex mid-reach, where the Muwen and Chaiwen rivers merge, warrants specific focus. This region, adjacent to populous areas and industrial/agricultural zones, features diverse aquifer systems, necessitating a thorough analysis of its hydrochemistry and origins. This study presents an integrated hydrochemical, isotopic investigation and EWQI evaluation of groundwater quality and formation mechanisms within the multiple groundwater types of the central DRB. Central DRB groundwater has a pH of 7.5–8.2 (avg. 7.8) and TDSs at 450–2420 mg/L (avg. 1075.4 mg/L) and is mainly brackish, with Ca2+ as the primary cation (68.3% of total cations) and SO42− (33.6%) and NO3 (28.4%) as key anions. The Piper diagram reveals complex hydrochemical types, primarily HCO3·SO4-Ca and SO4·Cl-Ca. Isotopic analysis (δ2H, δ18O) confirms atmospheric precipitation as the principal recharge source, with pore water showing evaporative enrichment due to shallow depths. The Gibbs diagram and ion ratios demonstrate that hydrochemistry is primarily controlled by silicate and carbonate weathering (especially calcite dissolution), active cation exchange, and anthropogenic influences. EWQI assessment (avg. 156.2) indicates generally “good” overall quality but significant spatial variability. Pore water exhibits the highest exceedance rates (50% > Class III), driven by nitrate pollution from intensive vegetable cultivation in eastern areas (Xiyangzhuang–Liangzhuang) and sulfate contamination from gypsum mining (Guojialou–Nanxiyao). Karst water (26.7% > Class III) shows localized pollution belts (Huafeng–Dongzhuang) linked to coal mining and industrial discharges. Compared to basin-wide studies suggesting good quality in mid-upper reaches, this intensive mid-reach sampling identifies critical localized pollution zones within an overall low-EWQI background. The findings highlight the necessity for aquifer-specific and land-use-targeted groundwater protection strategies in this hydrogeologically complex region. Full article

The quality of Crocus sativus L. flowers, beyond their stigmas, is influenced by the presence of bioactive metabolites also in their floral bio-residues. Given the effect of climatic and soil variables on these bioactive compounds, the aim of this research was to develop an agroecological zoning of saffron crop areas within the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) La Mancha region (Castilla-La Mancha, Spain) by integrating the floral metabolite content with climatic and soil variables. To achieve this, a total of 173 samples were collected during the 2022 and 2023 harvests and analyzed via RP-HPLC-DAD to determine crocins, picrocrocin, kaempferols, and anthocyanins. Two new indices, Cropi (crocins + picrocrocin) and Kaeman (kaempferols + anthocyanins), were defined to classify flowers into four quality categories (A–D). High-quality classifications (A and B) were consistently associated with plots grouped in the meteorological stations of Ontur, El Sanchón, and Bolaños, indicating favorable edaphoclimatic conditions and climatic parameters, such as moderate temperatures and reduced humidity, for metabolite biosynthesis. In contrast, plots included in the meteorological stations of Tarazona and Pedernoso were mostly assigned to lower categories (C and D). Spatial analysis using thematic maps revealed that areas with an intermediate carbonate content, less calcareous soils, and higher organic matter levels were linked to higher flower quality. These findings highlight the influence of soil characteristics and climate, with distinct seasonal contrasts, that positively influence metabolite synthesis and flower quality. Full article

Cybersecurity threats increasingly originate from human actions within organizations, emphasizing the need to understand behavioral factors behind non-compliance with information security policies (ISPs). Despite the presence of formal security policies, insider threats—whether accidental or intentional—remain a major vulnerability. This study addresses the gap in behavioral cybersecurity research by developing an integrated conceptual model that draws upon Operant Conditioning Theory (OCT), Protection Motivation Theory (PMT), and the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) to explore ISP compliance. The research aims to identify key cognitive, motivational, and behavioral factors that shape employees’ intentions and actual compliance with ISPs. The model examines seven independent variables of perceived severity: perceived vulnerability, rewards, punishment, attitude toward the behavior, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control, with intention serving as a mediating variable and actual ISP compliance as the outcome. A quantitative approach was used, collecting data via an online survey from 302 employees across the public and private sectors. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with SmartPLS software (v.4.1.1.2) analyzed the complex relationships among variables, testing the proposed model. The findings reveal that perceived severity, punishment, attitude toward behavior, and perceived behavioral control, significantly and positively, influence employees’ intentions to comply with information security policies. Conversely, perceived vulnerability, rewards, and subjective norms do not show a significant effect on compliance intentions. Moreover, the intention to comply strongly predicts actual compliance behavior, thus confirming its key role as a mediator linking cognitive, motivational, and behavioral factors to real security practices. This study offers an original contribution by uniting three well-established theories into a single explanatory model and provides actionable insights for designing effective, psychologically informed interventions to enhance ISP adherence and reduce insider risks. The resulting plant waste from R. idaeus, P. serotina, P. avium, and P. cerasus exhibits a complex chemical composition, depending on the variety from which it originates, with applications in multiple fields such as the food, pharmaceutical or dermato-cosmetic industry due to the presence of phytochemical compounds such as flavonoids, flavonols, tannins, cyanogenic glycosides, vitamins, aldehyde, and phenolic acids. The aim of this review was to summarize and analyze the most recent and significant data from literature on the importance of plant waste resulting from the pruning process of trees and shrubs, in the context of applying circular economy principles, with a focus on the pharmacological importance (antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticoagulant, antiviral, and antitumoral) of some bioactive compounds identified in these species. Their applicability in various industries is closely linked to both the bioavailability of the final products and the study of their toxicity. The literature indicates that the isolation of these compounds can be carried out using conventional or modern methods, the last ones being favored due to the increased efficiency of the processes, as well as from the perspective of environmental protection. This review increases the attention and perspective of using plant waste as a linked source of pharmaceutical and dermato-cosmetic agents. Full article

Beach Sand Mycobiome is currently among the most important health challenges for viticulture in the world. Remarkably, the study of fungal communities in coastal beach sand and recreational waters remains underexplored despite their potential implications for human health. This research aimed to assess the prevalence of fungal species and the antifungal susceptibility profiles of fungi recovered from the beaches of the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman. Sand and seawater samples from 39 stations distributed within 13 beaches along the coastline were collected between May and July 2023. The grown isolates were identified at the species level based on morphological characteristics and DNA sequencing. Antifungal susceptibility testing was performed according to the Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines. Of 222 recovered isolates, 206 (92.8%) filamentous fungi and 16 (7.2%) yeast strains were identified. Sand-recovered fungi comprised 82.9%, while water-originated fungi accounted for 17.1%. The DNA sequencing technique categorized 191 isolates into 13 genera and 26 species. The most recovered genus was Aspergillus (68.9%), and Aspergillus terreus sensu stricto was the commonly identified species (26.14%). Voriconazole was the most effective antifungal drug against Aspergillus species. Research on fungal contamination levels at these locations could provide a foundation for establishing regulatory frameworks to diminish fungal risks, thereby enhancing public health protection. The ecological significance of fungal communities in sandy beaches to human infections remains to be explored, and earlier reports in the literature may motivate researchers to focus on detecting this mycobiome in natural environments where further investigation is warranted. Ultimately, our discovery serves as a reminder that much remains to be learned about pathogenic fungi and underscores the need for vigilance in areas where emerging pathogens have not yet been identified. Plant growth regulators of natural origin are becoming increasingly important in crop production to protect plants against various abiotic stresses and often to modulate plant pathological processes. These compounds offer the potential to enhance plant health exogenously by protecting plants against oxidative stress. Melatonin has been studied previously; however, the role of exogenous melatonin in abiotic stress tolerance and the underlying mechanisms are still less understood. In this study, potato plants were grown in vitro to study the effects of exogenous melatonin and ultrasound treatment (latter as an abiotic stress). The measured parameters included morphological data and the concentrations of melatonin and its degradation products, indole-3-acetic acid and salicylic acid, at 0 h, 24 h, 1 week, and 4 weeks after treatment. In addition, the expression levels of the genes responsible for the production of enzymes involved in melatonin synthesis were traced by RT-qPCR analysis. Melatonin added to the culture medium was taken up by the in vitro plantlets, and it participated both in the plant stress reaction and stress mitigation when an abiotic stress reaction was triggered by ultrasound. Among the degradation products, we detected N-acetyl-5-methoxykynuramine, 6-hydroxymelatonin, and 5-methoxytryptamine by UHPLC-MS. Among the enzymes involved in the synthesis of melatonin and indole-3-acetic acid, the expression levels of COMT, SNAT, TSB, TAA, ASMT, TPH, AANAT, ASMT, and TSA were measured and no pattern was observed in response to the treatments. The authenticity of Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) Feta cheese is critical for consumer confidence and market integrity, particularly in light of widespread concerns over economically motivated adulteration. This study evaluated the potential of Attenuated Total Reflectance–Fourier Transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy combined with chemometric modeling to differentiate authentic Feta from non-Feta white brined cheeses. A total of 90 cheese samples, consisting of verified Feta and cow milk cheeses, were analyzed in both freeze-dried and fresh forms. Spectral data from raw, first derivative, and second derivative spectra were analyzed using principal component analysis–linear discriminant analysis (PCA-LDA) and Partial Least Squares Discriminant Analysis (PLS-DA) to distinguish authentic Feta from non-Feta cheese samples. Derivative processing significantly improved classification accuracy. All classification models performed relatively well, but the PLS-DA model applied to second derivative spectra of freeze-dried samples achieved the best results, with 95.8% accuracy, 100% sensitivity, and 90.9% specificity. The most consistently highlighted discriminatory regions across models included ~2920 cm−1 (C–H stretching in lipids), ~1650 cm−1 (Amide I band, corresponding to C=O stretching in proteins), and the 1300–900 cm−1 range, which is associated with carbohydrate-related bands. These findings support ATR-FTIR spectroscopy as a rapid, non-destructive tool for routine Feta authentication. The approach offers promise for enhancing traceability and quality assurance in high-value dairy products. Full article
