Background: Adolescence is a critical developmental period during which dietary habits are formed and may influence long-term health outcomes. Monitoring changes in adolescents’ eating behaviors and nutrition-related knowledge over time is important for developing effective health promotion strategies. The aim of this study was to compare adolescents’ (Lower Silesia, Poland) dietary habits and nutritional knowledge between two study periods (2011 and 2023) using comparable survey methods. Methods: A repeated cross-sectional comparison of two independent cohorts was conducted using an identical questionnaire in both study periods. The 2023 cohort included 14-year-old primary school students (n = 100; 48 girls and 52 boys), while the comparison group consisted of adolescents aged 13–15 years assessed in 2011 (n = 377; 202 girls and 175 boys). Anthropometric measurements and self-reported data on dietary habits and nutritional knowledge were analyzed using descriptive statistics and group comparison tests. Results: The findings indicate changes in selected dietary behaviors and levels of nutritional knowledge among adolescents over the studied period. A higher percentage of students in 2023 reported eating four meals per day and obtaining information about healthy eating from the Internet rather than from television. Students in 2023 were also more likely to recognize the relationship between diet and attention, identify the harmful effects of energy drinks and excessive fast-food consumption, and provide correct answers regarding proper nutrition. Nutritional knowledge improved over time, with a mean percentage of correct responses of 71.9% in 2023 compared with 63.7% in 2011. Although nutritional awareness improved in several areas, certain unhealthy eating habits remained prevalent, including irregular breakfast consumption and frequent intake of sweets. Changes in the distribution of body weight categories were also observed, with gender-specific differences between cohorts. Conclusions: The results suggest that improvements in nutritional knowledge alone may not be sufficient to ensure positive changes in dietary behavior among adolescents. Continued monitoring of adolescent nutrition and the development of comprehensive health promotion strategies addressing both knowledge and environmental influences remain necessary. Full article

Background/Objectives: The aging population faces a multitude of health challenges, particularly when it comes to maintaining proper nutrition. Age-related physiological changes, such as decreased metabolism, diminished taste perception, and difficulty in chewing, can lead to insufficient nutrient intake, ultimately resulting in malnutrition. It is crucial to address these issues to promote not only physical health but also overall well-being. In this modern era, artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, including robots and machine learning algorithms, are being increasingly harnessed to encourage healthy eating habits among older adults. This is critical to support healthy aging and mitigate diet-related chronic diseases. However, little or no synthesis has established their effectiveness in delivering personalized, scalable, and adaptive interventions for older adults. This systematic review considers the state-of-the-art application of AI-based interventions aimed at improving dietary behaviors and nutritional outcomes in older adults. Methods: Following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines and a registered PROSPERO protocol (ID: CRD420241045268), we systematically analyzed 30 studies we collected from five databases, published between 2015 and 2025 based on different AI techniques, including machine learning, natural language processing, and recommender systems. We synthesized data collected from these studies to examine the intervention types, outcomes, and methodological approaches. Results: Findings from our review highlight the potential of AI-based interventions to promote engagement among older adults and improve adherence to healthy eating guidelines. Additionally, we found some challenges related to ethical concerns such as privacy and transparency, and limited evidence of their long-term effectiveness. Conclusions: AI-based interventions offer significant promise in promoting healthy eating among older adults through personalized, adaptive, and scalable interventions. Yet, current evidence is constrained by some methodological limitations and ethical concerns, which calls for future research to design inclusive, evidence-based AI interventions that address the unique physiological, psychological, and social needs of older adults. Background: The importance of understanding dietary habits during working hours is becoming increasingly evident. As demonstrated, dietary habits have been shown to exert a considerable influence on the productivity of workers and the creation of a healthier workplace. Objective: The aim of this study is to assess the nutritional quality and self-perception of lunches consumed by workers in Piedmont (Italy). Methods: A questionnaire, supported by the EasyDietWeb 4.3.0 software, was used to assess the macronutrient composition of the meals and to evaluate adherence to the “Healthy Eating Plate” (HEP) guidelines. The basal metabolic rate and total daily energy expenditure of the subjects were calculated. Results: The survey results, which included 189 participants, revealed that a notable proportion of the respondents consumed homemade meals at their place of work. The majority of meals reported by the participants did not align with the HEP composition due to the absence of one or more components, especially vegetables. The participants’ perceptions of meal balance frequently diverged from the actual nutritional quality of the meals. Finally, overweight participants exhibited a higher risk of reporting diseases (OR = 4.4, 95% CI = 1.6–12.0). Conclusions: This study provides insight into the dietary habits of a specific group of workers regarding their lunch consumption. This underscores the significance of enhancing public awareness regarding dietary choices and nutritional intakes, as adhering to proper dietary routines is paramount for preserving a state of well-being and sustaining a healthy lifestyle. Objectives: This study comparatively evaluated changes in the food habits and dietary patterns of adults aged ≥65 years before and during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic using a retrospective study. Methods: Data covering the 2018–2021 period were derived from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Results: Comparing the 2943 individuals in the “Before-COVID-19” individuals with the 2916 people in the “During COVID-19” group, the frequency of drinking four or more times a week decreased among the older adults during the pan-demic, as did the frequency of eating three meals a day and eating-out at least once a week. On the other hand, food security improved during the pandemic compared with before the pandemic. During the pandemic, the intake of cereals and grains decreased, while that of potatoes and starches, legumes, vegetables, eggs, milk and dairy products, and oils and fats increased. Although energy and carbohydrate intake decreased, protein, fiber, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, potassium, zinc, riboflavin, vitamin E, vitamin C, folic acid, and fat intake increased. However, the intake of vitamin A, vitamin C, and calcium remained lower than the estimated adequate requirement of the Dietary Reference Intakes for Koreans. Additionally, the rate of nutritional insufficiency “During COVID-19” (20.76%) was 1.31–1.42 times higher than that “Before COVID-19” (16.45%). Even in models that adjusted for other factors, the rate of nutritional insufficiency was higher during the pandemic than before. Conclusions: Based on these findings, measures such as dietary education programs and guidelines for proper nutrient intake should be formulated to prevent imbalances in nutrient intake among older Koreans. Breath-hold diving (BHD) is defined as enduring apnea for more than 4 min. It is characterized by resistance of reactive oxygen species, reduced sensitivity to hypoxia, and low mitochondrial oxygen consumption. The energetic demands of different BHD disciplines (static, dynamic, and spearfishing) are various. Hence, the nutrition of these athletes may play an important role on their performance. The main aim of this study is to examine and propose recommendations for this specific population. Also, the aim is to divide nutrition according to main BHD disciplines (static, dynamic, and spearfishing). Mediterranean and alkaline diet could represent an appropriate BHD diet. Nutritional requirements differ between freediving (static and dynamic) and spearfishing, mainly because of the workload. Also, spearfishing includes multiple consecutive dives and hence has different recommendations. However, the proper nutrition for freedivers is based on a variety of natural foods that support acid–base balance, provide a stable source of energy, and facilitate quality recovery. By adopting healthy eating habits based on the Mediterranean and alkaline diet, along with regular hydration and adapting your diet to the specific needs of diving, divers can improve performance and ensure long-term health. Introduction: Good eating habits are essential for proper growth and development. The aim of this study was to assess the correlates of eating habits and factors associated with poor food habits (i.e., Food Habits Score <50%) among in-school adolescents. Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 423 adolescents enrolled from 10 high schools in Harare, Zimbabwe. A questionnaire was used to collect sociodemographic data, food habits, nutrition knowledge, and physical activity. WHO AnthroPlus was used to calculate weight-for-height z-scores for body mass index values. Pearson’s Chi-square and multinomial logistic regression were used to test for associations and explore factors associated with poor food habits (p < 0.05). Results: There were more girls (n = 225, 53.2%) than boys. Poor food habits were more prevalent than healthy eating habits for both sexes (51.1% and 53.5%, p = 0.619) and in the 14–16-year-old group (59.1%, p = 0.004). Overall, poor food habits were observed across the nutrition status spectrum with a higher percentage among underweight adolescents (58.5%, p = 0.693). Significant associations were found between age groups (14–16-year-olds vs. 17–19-year-olds) and high fat consumption, especially among 14–16-year-olds (54.8%, p = 0.036). Overall, sugar consumption was high among girls and 14–16-year-olds (52.6%, p = 0.278 and 55.1%, p = 0.666), and skipping meals, especially breakfast, was also common among the same sex and age groups (53.1%, p = 0.931 and 55.2%, p = 0.882). Poor food habits were significantly associated with the age group of 14–16 years [OR= 1.582 (1.026–2.440), p= 0.038]; places of residence in particularly high-density areas [OR= 1.816 (1.344–2.454), p = 0.001]; inadequate physical activity [OR = 0.479 (0.311–0.738), p = 0.001]; and inadequate nutrition knowledge [OR = 4.321 (2.242–8.330), p = 0.001]. Conclusions: Food habits were poor across the nutrition status spectrum. Poor food habits were more common among girls and 14–16-year-olds. Age, place of residence, nutrition knowledge, and inadequate physical activity were factors significantly associated with poor food habits. Full article

Background: Nutrition knowledge may be translated into adequate dietary intake and proper eating habits, so adolescent education programs focusing on improving eating habits and nutrition knowledge are needed. The aim of the cross-sectional study with pair-matched controls was to assess the Consumer Nutrition Knowledge Scale (CoNKS) results and its determinants after one year of intervention in a national extracurricular athletics program within a pair-matched sample of Polish adolescents. Methods: The #goathletics Study evaluated a Polish national extracurricular athletics program, ‘Athletics for all’, being a voluntary and free-of-charge physical activity program organized by the Polish Athletics Association. The study allowed comparing the intervention group of adolescents aged 10–14 years, participating in the program for at least 9 months (a school year) and a pair-matched group not participating in it, while the matching was based on city, gender, and age (each group: n = 506 adolescents, n = 281 females and n = 225 males). The nutrition knowledge was assessed using a Consumer Nutrition Knowledge Scale (CoNKS), and during the analysis, the following factors were taken into account: body weight, height, Body Mass Index (BMI), waist circumference, and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR). Results: The ‘Athletics for all’ program participation influenced not only the total CoNKS score (p < 0.0001) but also the scores in all studied areas—within procedural nutrition knowledge (p = 0.0002), declarative nutrition knowledge on nutrients (p = 0.0001), and declarative nutrition knowledge on calories (p < 0.0001), and program participants revealed a stronger understanding of all the studied areas compared to non-participating individuals. Gender, BMI, and central obesity tendency were not associated with the total CoNKS score (p > 0.05), or any of the studied areas (p > 0.05). The statistically significant differences in the number of correct answers were observed for four items within procedural nutrition knowledge, for four items within declarative nutrition knowledge on nutrients, and for four items within declarative nutrition knowledge on calories (p < 0.05), while for all of them, ‘Athletics for all’ program participants revealed a stronger understanding. Conclusions: One year of intervention in a national extracurricular athletics program significantly influenced the nutrition knowledge of the studied group of adolescents aged 10–14 years. While compared with the pair-matched control group of Polish adolescents, they were characterized by a stronger understanding of all areas of nutrition knowledge. Full article

This study assessed raw vegetable sanitizing in Brazilian schools and identified barriers to standards. This experimental and quantitative study was conducted in 12 school food services in the Federal District (Brazil) public primary education institutions. Microbiological analyses were conducted with vegetable samples (before and after sanitizing) and water used in the sanitization process, collected before the process. The Petrifilm®E. coli/Coliform Count Plates and COLIlert methods were used to evaluate vegetables and water samples, and a checklist of good practices was applied in each school food service to identify barriers to proper sanitization. Thirty-five samples of raw vegetables were offered to students, 32 samples of water, and 17 hygiene processes were evaluated. The results indicate that 76.5% (n = 13) of hygiene processes were considered unsatisfactory, with an average increase of 5.8 log CFU g−1 (DV = 7.4) in the initial microbial load in 47.1% (n = 8) of the evaluated processes; moreover, 33.3% (n = 6) of the samples exceeded the tolerable limit, with an average value above 1.5 × 103 CFU/g. Attention to food handler training and necessary organizational changes is essential to ensure safe food and promote healthy student eating habits, highlighting the importance of strengthening basic hygiene practices and following the parameters for sanitizing vegetables. Background: Eating habits established during the preschool stage may last a lifetime, underlining the importance of choosing and purchasing healthy foods for proper nutrition. Aim: To assess the associations between place of food purchase and dietary intake and quality in Spanish preschool children. Methods: A cross-sectional analysis was carried out within the framework of the SEguimiento del Niño para un Desarrollo Óptimo (SENDO) project. Data were collected using (1) the food frequency questionnaire (FFQ), from which dietary nutrient intake and diet quality (NOVA System classification and KIDMED index) were analysed, and (2) the baseline food habits questionnaire, which asked about the food purchase outlet. Data were analysed by logistic regression, considering the intra-group correlation between siblings and using the type of food purchase outlet as a grouping variable. Results: Children from families shopping in hypermarkets consumed fewer nutrients, less minimally processed foods, as well as less fruit and vegetables than children from families shopping in specialised shops. Conclusions: Food shopping in specialised outlets can improve the quality of children’s diets, promoting healthier habits such as greater adherence to the Mediterranean Diet and increasing the consumption of minimally processed foods. This has a positive impact on children’s long-term health. Full article

Adherence to dietary recommendations and the implementation of appropriate dietary habits after myocardial infarction (MI) can significantly improve health and reduce mortality from cardiac causes. The aim of this study was to analyse the adherence of patients with a history of MI to a healthy diet, which is one of the primary methods of cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevention. Following a proper diet involves limiting the consumption of saturated fats, salt, alcohol, and simple sugars. It is recommended to follow the Mediterranean diet, which is based on whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and fish. This study involved 120 patients hospitalised in the Invasive Cardiology and Cardiac Intensive Care Unit at the Independent Public Voivodship Hospital in Szczecin from August to December 2019. A self-designed questionnaire and the Questionnaire of Eating Behaviour (QEB) were used. The majority of respondents were hospitalised for a first-time MI (88.33%), and 65% of them reported adherence to the recommendations. The vast majority (78.33%) considered their diet good, with 50.83% of the respondents eating four meals a day and never eating fast food (49.17%). The analysis showed that although the respondents’ diets did not contain many unhealthy foods, they did not consume enough vegetables, fruits, fish, nuts, or fibre, which have a protective effect, lowering the risk of cardiovascular diseases and death. Furthermore, patients with a better education had a higher level of knowledge. Respondents’ knowledge of proper post-MI nutrition was sufficient, and their index of unhealthy diets was low, but they still made dietary mistakes and did not consume enough health-protective foods. These results indicate a need for further education. Full article

Public procurement of food is crucial for ensuring proper nutrition and the provision of high-quality products in public institutions like schools and kindergartens. It should be seen as an investment in health promotion, particularly for young children. Notably, when no quality criteria are specified, the cheapest and often lowest-quality products are typically selected. This study analyzed 1126 public procurement orders processed by schools and kindergartens in Poland between November 2022 and March 2023, with a focus on cereal products and their derivatives. Of these orders, 197 met the inclusion criteria, yielding a total of 5084 cereal products for detailed analysis. The study assessed the quantities ordered and the quality characteristics specified in the procurement documents. The results revealed that the most commonly described criteria pertained to product composition, especially typical characteristics and the absence of additives. Sensorial characteristics such as consistency and color were also frequently specified, while sustainable public procurement criteria were mentioned the least, indicating their marginal importance in current procurement practices. Background: COVID-19 infection, caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), quickly emerged as the most significant event of the new millennium. A balanced diet seems to ensure the proper functioning of the immune system and plays a fundamental role in the prevention of viral disease, inflammation, or thrombosis. The principal aim of this secondary study was to investigate the relationship between nutrients, lifestyle eating behaviors, and SARS-CoV-2 infection. Methods: A narrative review was conducted in the PubMed-Medline database, analyzing primary studies. Results: Our review identified 21 relevant studies: 13 focused on vitamins, 1 on omega-3 supplementation, 1 on probiotics, and 6 on lifestyle and dietary behaviors. Vitamin supplementation has shown promise in attenuating COVID-19 symptoms and reducing mortality risk. Specifically, vitamin D has demonstrated efficacy in enhancing immune responses among patients with the disease. While preliminary evidence suggests the potential benefits of omega-3 and probiotic supplementation in improving health outcomes for COVID-19 outpatients, further research is needed to solidify these findings. Conclusions: The lifestyle changes imposed by lockdown measures have adversely affected psychological well-being and exacerbated health issues associated with reduced physical activity and poor dietary habits. Background and aims: Saliva is essential for the proper dilution and distribution of taste molecules on the tongue. It harbors extracellular vesicles (EVs), which mediate cell–cell communication. Changes in the composition of salivary EVs may arise under obese conditions and may potentially be involved in taste sensation and dysregulated eating behavior. Therefore, this study addresses the relationship between the size and concentration of salivary EVs and metabolic shifts in obesity or factors of taste sensation. Materials and methods: A total of 119 participants in the Obese Taste Bud (OTB) Study were included, who performed a standardized taste test, underwent taste bud density assessment, and were phenotypically characterized for anthropometrics, blood- and saliva adipokine levels, and various metabolic factors. Utilizing size exclusion chromatography followed by ultrafiltration, EVs were extracted from 2 mL of actively secreted saliva. EVs were characterized using nanoparticle tracking analyses, Western blot, and scanning transmission electron microscopy. Finally, group comparisons and bivariate correlation analyses were conducted. Results: Among the total cohort, the median size of salivary EVs was 190.05 nm, and the overall concentration ranged from 1.4 × 107 to 1.76 × 109 per mL of saliva. The size range and concentration of EVs per mL are negatively correlated (p = 0.0002, r = −0.264). Comparing lean participants (mean rank of 45.98) with those presenting obesity (mean rank of 34.46), a significant difference in the salivary EV content was observed (p = 0.029). Body weight, BMI, arm and calf circumferences, as well as the percentage of body fat were all negatively related to the concentration of EVs in all study participants (all p < 0.05, r > −0.2). No associations were found between the EV parameters and taste perception but serum alkaline phosphatase levels were negatively correlated (p = 0.007, r = −0.284) and adiponectin serum levels were positively correlated to the EV concentration (p = 0.036, r = 0.208). Conclusion: The current study provides evidence for the relation between salivary EVs and anthropometric as well as metabolic parameters of obesity. This can provide the basis for further research on the cargo of salivary EVs and how they may influence taste sensation, and may elucidate their potential connection to altered eating habits in obesity. Background: Satisfaction with life is considered the best indicator of the quality of life of older people and is commonly used as an indicator of adaptation and successful aging. The objective of this study is to evaluate the quality of life and health among pre-seniors and seniors in Płock, Poland, focusing specifically on the interplay between life satisfaction and health outcomes. Methods: The study encompassed a total of 2040 individuals, categorized as pre-seniors and seniors. A diagnostic survey method was employed, utilizing a questionnaire that gathered sociodemographic data and incorporated two standardized psychometric scales: the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) and the Health Behaviours Inventory (HBI). Results: A majority of respondents demonstrated high levels of life satisfaction, with 1272 people (62.4%) scoring in the high range. In contrast, a smaller group, consisting of 299 respondents (14.7%), reported low satisfaction levels. Notably, men exhibited higher life satisfaction than women (p < 0.001). Additionally, a statistically significant but low correlation was found between the age of respondents and various aspects of the health behaviour index. This includes preventive behaviours (p < 0.001, r = 0.105), health practices (p < 0.001, r = 0.243), proper eating habits (p = 0.004, r = 0.063), and a positive mental attitude (p < 0.001, r = 0.098). These findings underline the complex interplay between age, life satisfaction, and health behaviours among the senior population. Conclusions: High life satisfaction and average to high levels of health behaviours were observed in our study, varying with gender and age. Individuals aged 61–75 reported the highest life satisfaction, whereas those aged 76–90 exhibited the most robust health behaviours. These results underscore the need for age- and gender-specific health policies and programs supporting sustainable aging, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals. Further national research is essential to comprehensively explore these trends and support global well-being initiatives for aging populations. Full article

Craniofacial growth and development have been shown to be influenced by various environmental factors that impact child development. This study aims to analyze the different patterns of feeding during early childhood, starting from birth, and assess the variability of nutrition during the first stage of childhood, along with the habits developed, to study their impact on jaw development. The study was conducted on a sample of twenty-five patients aged 3 to 5, following approval from the ethics committee of the Catholic University of Valencia. Informed consent was obtained from the fathers, mothers, and/or legal guardians, who were administered surveys on habits and diet. Cephalometric measurements within the parameters of ideal occlusion were subsequently taken. While previous studies examined this subject, the findings are challenging to evaluate. However, this study identified significant associations (p = 0.001) between clinical measurements and children’s eating habits. The growth and development of the craniofacial cavity are influenced by multiple factors, including a child’s diet and habits. Nonetheless, further research is required to determine whether diet can be considered a determining factor in proper jaw growth. Full article
