Robot-Assisted “Postage-Stamp” Vertebrotomy for Spinal Tumor Resection: Case Report

Background: Achieving adequate oncological margins in tumors involving the thoracic costovertebral junction is technically challenging because of complex regional anatomy and the need to preserve neurological and biomechanical integrity. This case report describes a robot-assisted margin-extension strategy after incomplete resection of a thoracic costovertebral chondrosarcoma. Methods: A 31-year-old man with grade 1 chondrosarcoma of the left sixth rib underwent second-stage surgical radicalization after prior incomplete resection with positive medial margins. Following multidisciplinary discussion, a single-stage posterior procedure was performed, including robot-assisted T4–T8 stabilization with radiolucent CFR-PEEK instrumentation and robot-assisted sagittal vertebral osteotomy (“Postage-Stamp Osteotomy”) of T6 to achieve en bloc removal of the involved costovertebral segment. Results: The osteotomy was executed using a pedicle-referenced robotic trajectory workflow with sequential navigated drilling and controlled completion with a navigated osteotome. Total operative time was 379 min, with estimated blood loss of 800 mL. No major intraoperative neurovascular complications occurred. Histopathology confirmed negative margins. The patient was mobilized on postoperative day 1 and discharged on postoperative day 6 without new neurological deficits. Radiological follow-up at 3 months showed no recurrence, while clinical follow-up at 5 months demonstrated full return to baseline activities. Conclusions: This report describes a technically feasible robot-assisted margin-extension strategy in a highly selected thoracic spinal oncology scenario. Although long-term oncological conclusions cannot be drawn from a single case, tailored technology-enabled margin-oriented approaches may represent a case-specific option in carefully selected patients. This study proposes a full-cost electricity pricing model (M3) based on power flow tracing, addressing limitations in traditional nodal pricing and postage stamp methods. M3 dynamically allocates fixed transmission costs based on actual grid utilization, improving fairness, price signal accuracy, and congestion management. The model achieves fast convergence within 20 iterations across tested networks. Sensitivity analysis confirms that fuel costs and load variations significantly impact pricing, making M3 more adaptive and responsive. A regression-based forecasting model further enhances price predictability. The dual IEEE 118-bus case study validates M3’s feasibility in inter-provincial electricity markets, demonstrating its effectiveness for real-time pricing and investment planning. Full article

As government documents, postage stamps are a rich source of information about a government’s policies on a wide range of subjects. In this article, a comparative semiotic analysis of the first seventy-five years of North and South Korean stamps is used to illustrate the similarities and differences in their attitudes towards ‘religion’ and religious practice. A corpus of stamps on a ‘religious’ theme was created for stamps issued by both governments from which a series of themes and motifs was noted. The semiotic analysis of the themes and motifs showed that while on South Korean stamps Buddhist motifs constituted the majority of stamps commemorating cultural history, there were few references to the commemoration of Buddhism itself. The reverse was found to be true for Christianity. Although Christianity was not shown to be a major expression of Korean culture, Christianity itself was commemorated extensively. On North Korean stamps, folklore and Christian motifs predominated as projections of cultural history, but the Christian motifs referred only to foreign cultures, not Korean culture. Motifs relating to the foundation myth of Tan’gun were common to both North and South Korea. However, in the South, motifs from the myth referred to the nation, while in the North they referred to the ruling family. Full article

Scanning micrο X-ray fluorescence (μ-XRF) and multispectral imaging (MSI) were applied to study philately stamps, selected for their small size and intricate structures. The μ-XRF measurements were accomplished using the M6 Jetstream Bruker scanner under optimized conditions for spatial resolution, while the MSI measurements were performed employing the XpeCAM-X02 camera. The datasets were acquired asynchronously. Elemental distribution maps can be extracted from the μ-XRF dataset, while chemical distribution maps can be obtained from the analysis of the multispectral dataset. The objective of the present work is the fusion of the datasets from the two spectral imaging modalities. An algorithmic co-registration of the two datasets is applied as a first step, aiming to align the multispectral and μ-XRF images and to adapt to the pixel sizes, as small as a few tens of micrometers. The dataset fusion is accomplished by applying k-means clustering of the multispectral dataset, attributing a representative spectrum to each pixel, and defining the multispectral clusters. Subsequently, the μ-XRF dataset within a specific multispectral cluster is analyzed by evaluating the mean XRF spectrum and performing k-means sub-clustering of the μ-XRF dataset, allowing the differentiation of areas with variable elemental composition within the multispectral cluster. The data fusion approach proves its validity and strength in the context of philately stamps. We demonstrate that the fusion of two spectral imaging modalities enhances their analytical capabilities significantly. The spectral analysis of pixels within clusters can provide more information than analyzing the same pixels as part of the entire dataset. Full article

One of the most critical tasks of China’s power sector reformation is re-designing transmission and distribution (T&D) prices, which are essential in establishing fair and ordered power markets and encouraging the efficient allocation of resources. In view of the problems in China’s power market, such as the lack of a market mechanism for the reasonable allocation of congestion revenue, unreasonable transmission cost composition, and the failure of the transmission pricing mechanism to reflect the utilization degree of transmission resources by users in different geographical locations, this study proposes a transmission price design under the application scenarios of regional power grids and provincial power grids dominated by meshed AC networks in China that considers the marginal benefit of the transmission and spatiotemporal information of electricity demand. The proposed method effectively tackles the above-mentioned problem, with the transmission cost being divided into two parts: the expansion cost reflecting the marginal benefits of transmission, and the residual cost reflecting the rest. The expansion cost is objective and based on power system economics; it is calculated as the congestion revenue under the location marginal price-based wholesale electricity markets, resulting in a more reasonable division of transmission costs and allocation of congestion revenue. Furthermore, allocating the residual cost with the power flow distribution factor and the postage stamp method also reflects the utilization degree of transmission resources by users in different geographical locations. The effectiveness of this transmission price design is confirmed by testing it against a 3-bus and an IEEE 30-bus system. Full article

Unlike non-variable renewable energy (VRE) generators, VRE generators have site-specific, various, and uncertain characteristics that require different approaches for power wheeling cost calculations. The conventional power wheeling method cannot be used to accommodate the variability and site specificity of VRE. This study aims to develop a power wheeling calculation method that accommodates the variability and site specificity of VRE by comparing the postage stamp and MW mile methods in a multi-period optimal power flow simulation. The impact of line contingencies on the total power wheeling cost is also assessed. The simulation uses a modified IEEE 39 bus system as the test network, with three study cases centered on assessing the impacts of variability, site specificity, and line contingency. Based on the simulation, it is understood that the pivotal power wheeling cost is the line used by power wheeling actors, as there are cheaper and more expensive lines. Therefore, the total power wheeling cost is less affected by variability and more affected by the site specificity of VRE. On the other hand, because of the meshed network being employed as the test case, line contingency results in a lower cost for power wheeling actors to use fewer and cheaper lines. Full article

This paper reports a new concept of a film-shaped micropump array for biomedical perfusion. The detailed concept, design, fabrication process, and performance evaluation using prototypes are described. In this micropump array, an open circuit potential (OCP) is generated by a planar biofuel cell (BFC), which in turn generates electro-osmotic flows (EOFs) in multiple through-holes arranged perpendicular to the micropump plane. The micropump array is thin and wireless, so it can be cut like postage stamps, easily installed in any small location, and can act as a planar micropump in solutions containing the biofuels glucose and oxygen. Perfusion at local sites are difficult with conventional techniques using multiple separate components such as micropumps and energy sources. This micropump array is expected to be applied to the perfusion of biological fluids in small locations near or inside cultured cells, cultured tissues, living organisms, and so on. Full article

In this paper, we investigate the problem of sparse array design for the direction of the arrival (DOA) of non-Gaussian signals and exploit the unfolded coprime linear array with three subarrays (UCLATS) to obtain physical sensors location. With the motivation from the large consecutive degree of freedom (DOF), we optimize the process of obtaining physical sensors location from two steps. Specifically, the first is to model the process of obtaining the longest consecutive virtual sum co-array from a given number of physical array elements into a global postage-stamp problem (GPSP), whose solution can be employed to determine the locations of the longest possible consecutive sum co-array (2-SC) and initial physical array. The second step is to multiply the location of the virtual sum co-array by appropriate coprime coefficients to generate UCLATS and then multiply the initial physical array position by the same corresponding coefficients to obtain physical sensors location. Besides, an algorithm is proposed to obtain DOA estimates, which employs the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) method and partial spectrum searching multiple signal classification (PSS-MUSIC) algorithm to obtain initial estimates and fine estimates, respectively, termed as the DFT-MUSIC method. Compared with the traditional total spectrum searching MUSIC (TSS-MUSIC) algorithm, the DFT-MUSIC method performs the same asymptotical performance of DOA estimation with less than 10% complex multiplication times, which can be verified by numerical simulations under the same condition. The core objective of transmission tariffs is the recovery of costs related to the transport of electricity. A usual component of a tariff is a fixed charge that covers the costs of the network infrastructure. As many customers use the power grid, the rate of this charge should reflect, as closely as possible, the actual costs of supplying energy to the individual consumers. These costs result from which network elements have been used in delivering the electricity, and to what extent these elements have been used. Therefore, the fixed transmission rates should depend on the degree of network utilization. This article investigates definitions of the degree of network utilization based on the active power flow. To calculate the degree of network utilization, the flow of electricity on a branch must be decomposed into the streams flowing to individual customers. For this decomposition, two methods are examined: a power flow tracing method, based on the proportional sharing principle, and an incremental power flow method, based on the superposition principle. The analyzed methodology is applied to a small test system for conceptual discussions, as well as to the transmission network of the Polish power system, as an example of practical application. The results of this study were then compared with the commonly used “postage stamp” method. Finally, several practical aspects related to the potential implementation of the presented methodology are discussed. Full article

For many developing countries, historical inflation figures are rarely available. We propose a simple method that aims to recover such figures of inflation using prices of postage stamps issued in earlier years. We illustrate our method for Suriname, where annual inflation rates are available for 1961 until 2015, and where fluctuations in inflation rates are prominent. We estimate the inflation rates for the sample 1873 to 1960. Our main finding is that high inflation periods usually last no longer than 2 or 3 years. An Exponential Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroscedasticity (EGARCH) model for the recent sample and for the full sample with the recovered inflation rates shows the relevance of adding the recovered data.
