Since the early 21st century, urban shrinkage has become a significant global phenomenon. Dongguan, in Guangdong Province, China, is known as a “world factory”. It experienced notable urban shrinkage following the 2008 financial crisis. However, the city demonstrated remarkable recovery and ongoing development in subsequent years. On that basis, this study focuses on the following three points: (1) identifying the spatiotemporal factors contributing to the growth and shrinkage of manufacturing cities, taking Dongguan as an example; (2) explaining the influencing factors of the growth and shrinkage of Dongguan City during three critical periods, 2008–2014 (post-crisis), 2015–2019 (as machinery replaced human work), and 2020–2023 (the COVID-19 pandemic and recovery); and (3) selecting representative towns and streets for on-site observation and investigation, analyzing the measures they have taken to cope with growth and shrinkage during different periods. The key findings include the following: (1) The spatial dynamics of growth and shrinkage in Dongguan show significant temporal patterns, with traditional manufacturing areas shrinking from 2008 to 2014, central urban areas recovering from 2015 to 2019, and renewed shrinkage from 2020 to 2023. However, some regions maintained stability through strategic innovations. (2) Various factors, particularly industrial upgrading and technological innovation, drove the urban dynamics, enhancing economic resilience. (3) The case study of Houjie Town revealed successful adaptive mechanisms supported by policy while facing challenges like labor mismatches and inadequate R&D investment. This research offers insights for improving urban resilience and promoting sustainable development in Dongguan. Full article

Air pollution monitoring in ungauged zones presents unique challenges yet remains critical for understanding environmental health impacts and socioeconomic dynamics in the Eastern Mediterranean region. This study investigates air pollution patterns in northwestern Syria during 2019–2024, analyzing NO2 and CO concentrations using Sentinel-5P TROPOMI satellite data processed through Google Earth Engine. Monthly concentration averages were examined across eight key locations using linear regression analysis to determine temporal trends, with Spearman’s rank correlation coefficients calculated between pollutant levels and five meteorological parameters (temperature, humidity, wind speed, atmospheric pressure, and precipitation) to determine the influence of political governance, economic conditions, and environmental sustainability factors on pollution dynamics. Quality assurance filtering retained only measurements with values ≥ 0.75, and statistical significance was assessed at a p < 0.05 level. The findings reveal distinctive spatiotemporal patterns that reflect the region’s complex political-economic landscape. NO2 concentrations exhibited clear political signatures, with opposition-controlled territories showing upward trends (Al-Rai: 6.18 × 10−8 mol/m2) and weak correlations with climatic variables (<0.20), indicating consistent industrial operations. In contrast, government-controlled areas demonstrated significant downward trends (Hessia: −2.6 × 10−7 mol/m2) with stronger climate–pollutant correlations (0.30–0.45), reflecting the impact of economic sanctions on industrial activities. CO concentrations showed uniform downward trends across all locations regardless of political control. This study contributes significantly to multiple Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), providing critical baseline data for SDG 3 (Health and Well-being), mapping urban pollution hotspots for SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities), demonstrating climate–pollution correlations for SDG 13 (Climate Action), revealing governance impacts on environmental patterns for SDG 16 (Peace and Justice), and developing transferable methodologies for SDG 17 (Partnerships). These findings underscore the importance of incorporating environmental safeguards into post-conflict reconstruction planning to ensure sustainable development. Full article

As part of the post-conflict reconstruction and recovery, the development of Kabul New City aims to bring relief to the existing capital city, Kabul, which has experienced exponential population growth, putting heavy pressure on its existing resources. Kabul New City is divided into four subsectors, and each of them is being developed and is expected to reach a target population by 2025, as defined by the master plan. The study’s objective is to determine which of the four zones are in demand and need to be prioritized for development, as per the model results. The data collection involves an online questionnaire, and the responses are collected from residents of Kabul and Herat. Agent-based modeling (ABM) is an emerging method of simulating urban dynamics. Cities are evolving continuously and are forming unique spatial patterns that result from the movement of residents in search of new locations that accommodate their needs and preferences. An agent-based model is developed using the weighted random selection process based on household size and income levels. The agents are the residents of Kabul and Herat, and the environment is the land use classification image using the Sentinel 2 image of Kabul New City. The barren class is treated as the developable area and is divided into four sub-sectors. The model simulates three alternative growth rate scenarios, i.e., ambitious, moderate, and steady. The results of the simulation reveal that the sub-sector Dehsabz South, being closer to Kabul city, is in higher demand. Barikab is another sub-sector high in demand, which has connectivity through the highway and is an upcoming industrial hub. Full article

Background: The integration of mining and urban spaces in coal-resource-based cities holds significant implications for urban transformation and sustainable development. However, existing research lacks an in-depth analysis of its characteristics and driving factors. Methods: This study takes the central urban area of Huaibei City as a case, utilizing historical documents, POI data, and spatial analysis methods to explore the evolution patterns and influencing factors of mining–urban spatial integration. Standard deviation ellipse analysis was employed to examine historical spatial changes, while a binary logistic regression model and principal component analysis were constructed based on 300 m × 300 m grid units to assess the roles of 11 factors, including location, transportation, commerce, and natural environment. Results: The results indicate that mining–urban spatial integration exhibits characteristics of lag, clustering, transportation dominance, and continuity. Commercial activity density, particularly leisure, dining, and shopping facilities, serves as a core driving factor. Road network density, along with the areas of educational and residential zones, positively promotes integration, whereas water surface areas (such as subsidence zones) significantly inhibit it. Among high-integration areas, Xiangshan District stands as the most economically prosperous city center; Lieshan–Yangzhuang mining area blends traditional and modern elements; and Zhuzhuang–Zhangzhuang mining area reflects the industrial landscape post-transformation. Conclusions: The study reveals diverse integration patterns under the synergistic effects of multiple factors, providing a scientific basis for optimizing spatial layouts and coordinating mining–urban development in coal-resource-based cities. Future research should continue to pay attention to the dynamic changes of spatial integration of mining cities, explore more effective integrated development models, and promote the rational and efficient use of urban space and the sustainable development of cities. High-density cities have obvious characteristics of compact urban spatial form and intensive land use in terms of spatial environment, and have always been a topic of academic focus. As a typical coastal historical district, the Macau Peninsula pier district (mainly the Macau Inner Harbour) has a high building density and a low average street width, forming a vertical coastline development model that directly converses with the ocean. This area is adjacent to Macau’s World Heritage Site and directly related to the Marine trade functions. The distribution pattern of cultural heritage linked by the ocean has strengthened Macau’s unique positioning as a node city on the Maritime Silk Road. This text is based on the theory of urban development, integrates spatial syntax and POI analysis techniques, and combines the theories of waterfront regeneration, high-density urban form and post-industrial urbanism to integrate and deepen the theoretical framework, and conduct a systematic study on the urban spatial characteristics of the coastal area of the Macau Peninsula. This study found that (1) Catering and shopping facilities present a dual agglomeration mechanism of “tourism-driven + commercial core”, with Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro as the main axis and radiating to the Ruins of St. Paul’s and Praça de Ponte e Horta, respectively. Historical blocks and tourist hotspots clearly guide the spatial center of gravity. (2) Residential and life service facilities are highly coupled, reflecting the spatial logic of “work-residence integration-service coordination”. The distribution of life service facilities basically overlaps with the high-density residential area, forming an obvious “living circle + community unit” structure with clear spatial boundaries. (3) Commercial and transportation facilities form a “functional axis belt” organizational structure along the main road, with the Rua das Lorchas—Rua do Almirante Sérgio axis as the skeleton, constructing a “functional transmission chain”. (4) The spatial system of the Macau Peninsula pier district has transformed from a single center to a multi-node, network-linked structure. Its internal spatial differentiation is not only constrained by traditional land use functions but is also driven by complex factors such as tourism economy, residential migration, historical protection, and infrastructure accessibility. (5) Through the analysis of space syntax, it is found that the core integration of the Macau Peninsula pier district is concentrated near Pier 16 and the northern area. The two main roads have good accessibility for motor vehicle travel, and the northern area of the Macau Peninsula pier district has good accessibility for long and short-distance walking. Industrial heritage has historical and cultural value and reuse potential. Urban industrialization has a significant social influence on place identity and emotional identity. Shougang Science Fiction Industrial Park (hereinafter referred to as “Shougang Park”) serves as one of the first pilot projects for the transformation of old industrial areas in China. This study examines Shougang Park through a spatial narrative lens, analyzing its industrial heritage via the “author-text-reader” framework. Research reveals the specific implications of the three dimensions and the connections behind them. The findings offer practical strategies for experiential tourism design and adaptive reuse planning, while establishing theoretical models applicable to global post-industrial heritage revitalization. Population aging–weakening has become a critical constraint on rural sustainability in China’s Yellow River Basin (YRB), posing substantial challenges to ecological conservation and high-quality development. This study develops a multidimensional evaluation framework categorizing rural aging–weakening into four typologies: general development type (GDT), shallow aging–weakening type (SAT), medium aging–weakening type (MAT), and deep aging–weakening type (DAT). Then, the XGBoost model is used to assess the factors influencing the spatial diversity of aging–weakening types in the rural population at different spatial and temporal scales. The key findings reveal the following: (1) The proportion of aging–weakening areas increased from 65% (2000) to 72% (2020), exhibiting distinct regional trajectories. Upper reaches demonstrate severe manifestations (34% combined MAT/DAT in 2020), contrasting with middle reaches dominated by GDT/SAT (>80%). Lower reaches show accelerated deterioration (MAT/DAT surged from 10% to 31%). (2) Spatial differentiation primarily arises from terrain-habitat conditions, industrial capacity, urbanization, and agricultural income. While most factors maintained stable directional effects, agricultural income transitioned from positive to negative correlation post-2010. Upper/middle reaches are predominantly influenced by geographical environment, with the role of socioeconomic factors gradually increasing. Lower reaches exhibit stronger economic–environmental interactions. (3) This research provides actionable insights for differentiated regional strategies: upper reaches require ecological migration programs, middle areas need industrial transition support, while lower regions demand coordinated economic–environmental governance. Our typological framework offers methodological advancements for assessing demographic challenges in vulnerable watersheds, with implications extending to similar developing regions globally. In recent years, with the rapid socioeconomic development of Wuxi City, the frequent occurrence of severe air pollution events has attracted widespread attention from both the local government and the public. Based on the real-time monitoring data of criteria pollutants and GDAS (Global Data Assimilation System) reanalysis data, the spatiotemporal variation patterns, meteorological influences, and potential sources of major air pollutants in Wuxi across different seasons during 2019 (pre-COVID-19) and 2023 (post-COVID-19 restrictions) are investigated using the Pearson correlation coefficient, potential source contribution function (PSCF), and concentration-weighted trajectory (CWT) models. The results demonstrate that the annual mean PM2.5 concentration in Wuxi decreased significantly from 39.6 μg/m3 in 2019 to 29.3 μg/m3 in 2023, whereas the annual mean 8h O3 concentration remained persistently elevated, with comparable levels of 104.6 μg/m3 and 105.0 μg/m3 in 2019 and 2023, respectively. The O3 and particulate matter (PM) remain the most prominent air pollutants in Wuxi’s ambient air quality. The hourly mass concentrations of criteria pollutants, except O3, exhibited characteristic bimodal distributions, with peak concentrations occurring post-rush hour during morning and evening commute periods. In contrast, O3 displayed a distinct unimodal diurnal pattern, peaking between 15:00 and 16:00 local time. The spatial distribution patterns revealed significantly elevated concentrations of all monitored species, excluding O3, in the central urban zone, compared to the northern Taihu Lake region. The statistical analysis revealed significant correlations among PM concentrations and other air pollutants. Additionally, meteorological parameters exerted substantial influences on pollutant concentrations. The PSCF and CWT analyses revealed distinct seasonal variations in the potential source regions of atmospheric pollutants in Wuxi. In spring, the Suzhou–Wuxi–Changzhou metropolitan cluster and northern Zhejiang Province were identified as significant contributors to PM2.5 and O3 pollution in Wuxi. The potential source regions of O3 are predominantly distributed across the Taihu Lake-rim cities during summer, while the eastern urban agglomeration adjacent to Wuxi serves as major potential source areas for O3 in autumn. In winter, the prevailing northerly winds facilitate southward PM2.5 transport from central-northern Jiangsu, characterized by high emissions (e.g., industrial activities), identifying this region as a key potential source contribution area for Wuxi’s aerosol pollution. The current air pollution status in Wuxi City underscores the imperative for implementing more stringent and efficacious intervention strategies to ameliorate air quality. Full article

Post-industrial and post-mining areas are an important element of cities historically associated with industrial activity. The transformation of degraded areas is a challenge for spatial policy, which is characterized by a substantial impact on the cultural heritage of mining and industry. The case of Piekary Śląskie shows the consequences of deindustrialization, which leads to the degradation of urban space and requires innovative revitalization strategies considering the principles of sustainable development and the concept of blue–green infrastructure. Archived topographic maps and current interactive maps of the study city were used in a spatial data analysis. The aim was to determine the directions of the spatial development of post-industrial and post-mining areas using the example of a medium-sized city located in the core of the Katowice conurbation, while considering the role of blue–green infrastructure in the revitalization process. Integrating blue–green infrastructure into the city’s planning documents may serve as a model for other urban areas, highlighting the synergy benefits between urban development and environmental protection. Such solutions support the development of a green economy to improve residents’ living conditions and increase the city’s competitiveness in the region. The specific examples of the revitalization of the areas in the Andaluzja and Julian mines and the reclamation of the brickyard in the area of Kozłowa Góra in Piekary Śląskie show that a multifunctional approach to revitalization contributes to the harmonious development of urban spaces. Bike-sharing initiatives play a crucial role in sustainable urban transportation, addressing vehicular congestion, air quality issues, and sedentary lifestyles. However, the connection between bike-sharing facilities and the advantages perceived by users remains insufficiently explored particular in post-industrial regions, such as Silesia, Poland. This study develops a multidimensional framework linking infrastructure elements—such as station density, bicycle accessibility, maintenance standards, and technological integration—to perceived benefits. Using a mixed-methods approach, a survey conducted in key Silesian cities combines quantitative analysis (descriptive statistics, factor analysis, and regression modelling) with qualitative insights from user feedback. The results indicate that the most valuable benefits are health improvements (e.g., improved physical fitness and mobility) and environmental sustainability. However, infrastructural deficiencies—disjointed bike path systems, uneven station placements, and irregular maintenance—substantially hinder system efficiency and accessibility. Inadequate bike maintenance adversely affects efficiency, safety, and sustainability, highlighting the necessity for predictive upkeep and optimised services. This research underscores innovation as a crucial factor for enhancing systems, promoting seamless integration across multiple modes, diversification of fleets (including e-bikes and cargo bikes), and the use of sophisticated digital solutions like real-time tracking, contactless payment systems, and IoT-based monitoring. Furthermore, the transformation of post-industrial areas into cycling-supportive environments presents strategic opportunities for sustainable regional revitalisation. These findings extend beyond the context of Silesia, offering actionable insights for policymakers, urban mobility planners, and Smart City stakeholders worldwide, aiming to foster inclusive, efficient, and technology-enabled bike-sharing systems. This study explores the spatiotemporal distribution and formation mechanisms of urban heat islands (UHIs) in Nanjing during summer, utilizing temperature data from 82 automatic weather stations (AWSs) distributed across five concentric zones. The results demonstrate the substantial impact of urbanization on UHI patterns, with industrial and densely populated areas exhibiting higher UHI intensity (UHII), while regions with natural landscapes such as mountains and water bodies display lower temperatures. The analysis reveals that the most pronounced night-time UHI effect occurs in the highly urbanized central zones, whereas the weakest effect is observed during midday. Transitional UHI phases are identified around sunrise and sunset, with increased long-wave radiation post-sunset amplifying the UHI effect. Additionally, this study underscores the directional characteristics of UHI distribution in Nanjing. Notably, Hexi New Town has emerged as a new high-temperature hotspot due to rapid urbanization, while Jiangning New Town and Xianlin Sub-City maintain lower temperatures owing to their proximity to agricultural and forested areas. By selecting representative AWSs from different zones, this study introduces a novel and practical method for calculating UHII. Although the approach has limitations in precision, it provides an accessible tool for UHI analysis and can be adapted for use in other cities. The migration of the population from large urban centers to green areas in peri-urban areas is a characteristic phenomenon for large metropolises in Central and Eastern Europe, in the context of the accentuation of globalizing flows. Romania is a good example in this regard. The paper analyzes the impact of urban–peri-urban migration in the general context of the demographic decline in this country and the regional differentiations of the dynamics of the depopulation phenomenon. Five regional metropolises with macro-territorial polarization functions were selected as case studies: Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Timișoara, Iași and Constanța. The study aims to carry out a spatio-temporal correlative analysis on the development of the peri-urban areas bordering large cities, in order to fill a gap in the scientific literature on these aspects. It attempts to explain the causes of the atypical trajectories of these localities in the general context of the demographic decline affecting the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, through a complex analysis of the interdependencies between factors, drawing attention to the fragility of these areas in terms of green infrastructure and elaborating a series of forecasts regarding integrated urban–rural development. This paper contributes to the literature on spatial planning and in particular on the post-industrial reconversion of the areas bordering large urban centers, as a result of the phenomena of depopulation and exurbanization. It can serve as a reference for the stage of development of the peri-urban areas of the capital and the main regional metropolises in Romania, cities representative of the urban development trajectories in Central and Eastern Europe. Urban sprawl and brownfields are recognized as the main challenges for sustainable land use in post-industrial cities. Using a mixed methodology (GIS and interviews), this research aimed to examine the relationship between the redevelopment process of former Soviet military brownfields and urban sprawl in Hungary. Research findings highlighted the overall importance of the regeneration of military brownfields in urban development; however, not all the assessed projects appeared to be beneficial to densification objectives. We could identify two groups of brownfields lying within the boundaries of the compact city and outside the boundaries. The regeneration of military brownfields embedded in the built-up areas of cities can contribute to densification objectives and attract new functions and residents to abandoned areas. They can also support wider regeneration strategies of local governments, especially in run-down neighborhoods. However, a large number of military brownfields are located on the peripheries of metropolitan areas. The regeneration of such sites, as demonstrated by the case studies, can play a catalyst role in urban sprawl. Therefore, it is important to emphasize that local municipalities should make a careful strategic selection of military brownfield sites for redevelopment based upon their characteristics and location, as supported by the typology presented in this study, together with locally perceived socio-economic and risk factors. Rethinking the Sustainability of Industrial Buildings in High-Density Urban Areas: Balancing Adaptability and Public Satisfaction

In the context of land scarcity and high-density urban areas, the adaptive reuse of abandoned historical industrial buildings plays a critical role in achieving sustainable development goals. This study proposes a sustainability assessment framework for the adaptive reuse of industrial buildings as exhibition spaces within the context of high-density urban development, addressing multiple dimensions of sustainability, including the building’s physical structure, economic factors, environmental impact, social considerations, and governance. The framework consists of 55 design indexes, categorized into 15 subcategories and 5 main categories. We conducted a survey of experts with experience in high-density urban renewal design and implemented a weighting analysis to identify priority intervention measures for industrial building redevelopment in the era of urban stock. Finally, a fuzzy comprehensive evaluation was carried out on ten cases in Shenzhen where industrial buildings were converted into exhibition spaces over the past 12 years. The findings reveal the following: (1) “Reuse of old architectural spaces” is the most critical category to prioritize, and, at the indicator level, “adaptability and efficiency of building reuse”, “public participation in the renewal process”, “cooperative operation structures”, and “planning vision” are identified as the four key influencing factors. (2) The functional layout, historical value, and richness of public amenities in the transformed industrial buildings have a significant positive impact on the evaluation results, while the building’s construction time and floor area do not significantly affect public post-evaluation. (3) Younger and more highly educated groups tend to view the transformed exhibition spaces as tourist attractions, particularly expressing satisfaction with the repurposing of the Kinwei Brewery and OCAT B10 New Hall, and consider the adaptive reuse of industrial buildings to promote sustainable urban renewal (SUR). This study provides concrete policy recommendations and practical guidance for the adaptive reuse of both new and existing industrial buildings, contributing to the creation of sustainable urban environments. Reconstructing Historical Land Use and Anthropogenic Inputs in Lake Victoria Basin: Insights from PAH and n-Alkane Trends

Over the past century, human activities have profoundly transformed global ecosystems. Lake Victoria in East Africa exemplifies these challenges, showcasing the interplay of anthropogenic pressures driven by land use changes, urbanization, agriculture, and industrialization. Our comprehensive study investigates polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and n-alkanes in the lake and its catchment to trace their sources and historical deposition. Sediment cores were collected from six sites within the catchment, representing diverse landforms and human activities, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the basin. The results indicate significant spatial and temporal variations in both PAH and n-alkane profiles, reflecting diverse land use changes and development trajectories in the basin. Urban sites often exhibited higher concentrations of PAHs and short-chain n-alkanes, indicative of anthropogenic sources such as fossil fuel combustion, the input of petroleum hydrocarbons, and industrial emissions. In contrast, rural areas showed low PAH levels and a dominance of long-chain n-alkanes from terrestrial plant waxes. The n-alkane ratios, including the Carbon Preference Index and the Terrigenous–Aquatic Ratio, suggested shifts in organic matter sources over time, corresponding with land use changes and increased human activities. A mid-20th century shift toward increased anthropogenic contributions was observed across sites, coinciding with post-independence development. The mid-lake sediment core integrated inputs from multiple sub-catchments, providing a comprehensive record of basin-scale changes. These findings highlight three distinct periods of organic matter input: pre-1960s, dominated by natural and biogenic sources; 1960s–1990s, marked by increasing anthropogenic influence; and post-1990s, characterized by complex mixtures of pyrogenic, petrogenic, and biogenic sources. This study underscores the cumulative environmental and aquatic ecosystem effects of urbanization (rural vs. urban sites), industrialization, and land use changes over the past century. The combined analyses of PAHs and n-alkanes provide a comprehensive understanding of historical and ongoing environmental impacts, emphasizing the need for integrated management strategies that address pollutant inputs to preserve Lake Victoria’s ecological integrity.
