Honey bees are vital to ecosystem conservation, agricultural production, and biodiversity, yet their welfare has often been overlooked. This study introduces the integration of Honey Bee Welfare Practices (HBWPs) into the One Welfare framework, addressing the interconnectedness of honey bee welfare, environmental welfare, and human wellbeing. We analysed and re-evaluated the 243 HBWPs already identified and categorised within the context of the Five Domains model in 2024 by Giovanni Formato et al., and we explored their broader impacts. By incorporating the One Welfare approach, we assessed each practice’s effect on bee welfare both as individuals and as a superorganism, human wellbeing, and environmental welfare, as well as their economic and time-related implications for beekeepers. The aim of this study was to obtain a list of One Welfare Practices in Beekeeping, considering all stakeholders as equally important. The analysis highlights the multidimensional nature of beekeeping, with 280 practices positively affecting honey bee welfare, while also considering their potential impact on human wellbeing, environmental health, and production. Challenges such as balancing beekeeper time constraints and welfare goals are discussed, with recommendations for practical compromises. This approach can offer a holistic and sustainable model for apiculture, ensuring that welfare is maintained across all stakeholders, and provides a flexible framework applicable to various beekeeping systems worldwide. Ensuring sustainable food systems is an urgent global priority as populations grow and environmental pressures mount. Technological innovations such as genetic engineering (GE) and nanotechnology (nano) have been promoted as promising pathways for achieving greater sustainability in agriculture and food production. Yet, the sustainability of these technologies is not defined by technical performance alone; it hinges on how they are perceived by key stakeholders and how well they align with broader societal values. This study addresses the critical question of how expert stakeholders evaluate the sustainability of GE and nano-based food and agriculture (agrifood) products. Using a multi-method online platform, we engaged 42 experts across academia, government, industry, and NGOs in the United States to assess six real-world case studies—three using GE and three using nano—across ten different dimensions of sustainability. We show that nano-based products were consistently rated more favorably than their GE counterparts in terms of environmental, economic, and social sustainability, as well as across ethical and societal dimensions. Like prior studies, our results reveal that stakeholders see meaningful distinctions between nanotechnology and biotechnology, likely due to underlying value-based concerns about animal welfare, perceived naturalness, or corporate control of agrifood systems. The fruit coating and flu vaccine—both nano-enabled—received the most positive ratings, while GE mustard greens and salmon were the most polarizing. These results underscore the importance of incorporating stakeholder perspectives in technology assessment and innovation governance. These results also suggest that responsible innovation efforts in agrifood systems should prioritize communication, addressing meaningful societal needs, and the contextual understanding of societal values to build trust and legitimacy. Background/Objectives: Mobile healthcare units (MHUs) comprise flexible, ambulatory healthcare teams that deliver community care services, particularly in underserved or remote areas. In Greece, MHUs were pivotal in epidemiological surveillance during the COVID-19 pandemic and are now evolving into a sustainable and integrated service for much-needed community-based healthcare. To support this expanded role, targeted, competency-based training is essential; however, this can pose challenges, especially in coordinating synchronous learning across geographically dispersed teams and in ensuring engagement using an online format. Methods: A nationwide, online training program was developed to improve the knowledge of the personnel members of the Hellenic National Public Health Organization’s MHUs. This program was structured focusing on four core themes: (i) prevention–health promotion; (ii) provision of care; (iii) social welfare and solidarity initiatives; and (iv) digital health skill enhancement. The program was implemented by the University of Crete’s Center for Training and Lifelong Learning from 16 January to 24 February 2025. A multidisciplinary team of 64 experts delivered 250 h of live and on-demand educational content, including health screenings, vaccination protocols, biomarker monitoring, chronic disease management, treatment adherence, organ donation awareness, counseling on social violence, and eHealth applications. Knowledge acquisition was assessed through a pre- and post-training multiple-choice test related to the core themes. Trainees’ and trainers’ qualitative feedback was evaluated using a 0–10 numerical rating scale (Likert-type). Results: A total of 873 MHU members participated in the study, including both healthcare professionals and administrative staff. The attendance rate was consistently above 90% on a daily basis. The average assessment score increased from 52.8% (pre-training) to 69.8% (post-training), indicating 17% knowledge acquisition. The paired t-test analysis demonstrated that this improvement was statistically significant (t = −8.52, p < 0.001), confirming the program’s effectiveness in enhancing knowledge. As part of the evaluation of qualitative feedback, the program was positively evaluated, with 75–80% of trainees rating key components such as content, structure, and trainer effectiveness as “Very Good” or “Excellent.” In addition, using a 0–10 scale, trainers rated the program relative to organization (9.4/10), content (8.8), and trainee engagement (8.9), confirming the program’s strength and scalability in primary care education. Conclusions: This initiative highlights the effectiveness of a structured, online training program in enhancing MHU knowledge, ensuring standardized, high-quality education that supports current primary healthcare needs. Future studies evaluating whether the increase in knowledge acquisition may also result in an improvement in the personnel’s competencies, and clinical practice will further contribute to assessing whether additional training programs may be helpful. This comprehensive systematic review critically examines the transformative evolution from traditional acoustic feature extraction—including Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCCs), spectral entropy, and spectrograms—to cutting-edge deep learning architectures encompassing Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks, attention mechanisms, and groundbreaking self-supervised models such as wav2vec2 and Whisper. The investigation reveals compelling evidence for edge computing deployment via TinyML frameworks, addressing critical scalability challenges in commercial poultry environments characterized by acoustic complexity and computational constraints. Advanced applications spanning emotion recognition, disease detection, and behavioral phenotyping demonstrate unprecedented potential for real-time welfare assessment. Through rigorous bibliometric co-occurrence mapping and thematic clustering analysis, this review exposes persistent methodological bottlenecks: dataset standardization deficits, evaluation protocol inconsistencies, and algorithmic interpretability limitations. Critical knowledge gaps emerge in cross-species domain generalization and contextual acoustic adaptation, demanding urgent research prioritization. The findings underscore explainable AI integration as essential for establishing stakeholder trust and regulatory compliance in automated welfare monitoring systems. This synthesis positions acoustic AI as a cornerstone technology enabling ethical, transparent, and scientifically robust precision livestock farming, bridging computational innovation with biological relevance for sustainable poultry production systems. Future research directions emphasize multi-modal sensor integration, standardized evaluation frameworks, and domain-adaptive models capable of generalizing across diverse poultry breeds, housing conditions, and environmental contexts while maintaining interpretability for practical farm deployment. Considering the controversial findings in the existing literature, this study aimed to deepen the knowledge about Hair Cortisol Concentration (HCC) in dogs by evaluating the influence on HCC of some factors related to dogs and guardians. Hair was collected from two groups: 128 Healthy Dogs (HD) and 25 dogs with a primary Chronic Gastroenteric Disease (CGD). Guardians of HD filled in a questionnaire, including dogs and respondents’ demographic information, and the perceived welfare and behaviour of the dog. HCC were measured with an enzyme immunoassay kit. A Wilcoxon rank-sum test was conducted to compare HCC in HD and CGD. For HD, a multiple linear regression and an ordinary logistic regression were performed with the dependent variable being HCC and the independent variables being dog and guardian characteristics and the questionnaire evaluations. HCC was statistically lower in CGD (medians: 4.79 versus 6.41 pg cortisol/mg hair; W = 961, p < 0.001). A positive association between HCC and guardian’s age was found (β: 0.012; t-value = 3.205; p < 0.01). Previous literature has shown that several factors can affect HCC in dogs; however, given the controversial results, a large sample and a multiparametric analysis, as in this study, can advance knowledge and highlight newly investigated factors. This study revealed the importance of also considering factors related to the guardian and the possibility that multiple factors interact and collectively influence HCC. Full article

The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is the first and currently the most expansive global infrastructure initiative, notably for its scale and emphasis on connectivity. In response, alternative initiatives such as the Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment (PGII) and Free and Open Indo-Pacific Strategy (FOIP), including their components the Blue Dot Network (BDN) and Partnership for Quality Infrastructure (PQI), as well as Global Gateway (GG) and the Three Seas Initiative (3SI), have emerged to counterbalance the BRI’s influence and promote more transparent, sustainable, and rules-based infrastructure frameworks. This review investigates how global and regional infrastructure initiatives—namely PGII/BDN, GG, FOIP/PQI, and 3SI—compare with the BRI in terms of development objectives, implementation models, institutional structures, and implications for developing economies. Adopting an inductive approach, this review identifies key themes from the literature to evaluate these initiatives across seven dimensions: (1) infrastructure objectives, (2) the quality and transparency of investments, (3) investment policy orientation, (4) trade policy orientation, (5) inclusivity and regional integration, (6) coordination mechanisms, and (7) environmental sustainability. While PGII/BDN, GG, FOIP/PQI, and 3SI appear well-positioned to address some of BRI’s shortcomings, the evidence does not clearly favour one model over another in terms of achieving welfare-enhancing outcomes and bridging development gaps. Nonetheless, strategic competition and complementarities among the connectivity policies of multiple initiatives can ultimately contribute to more accountable, multidimensionally sustainable, and socially inclusive infrastructure development. We also illustrate how stated preference methods, i.e., willingness to pay (WTP) and willingness to accept (WTA), can be used to quantify the value of soft infrastructure, particularly public preferences for sustainable investment and norm diffusion, which are central to evaluating the social welfare gains from participating in these initiatives. Cattle breeding has traditionally focused on improving production traits; however, recent interest in positive animal welfare has shifted attention toward selecting for more robust animals that balance productivity with health and well-being. The aim of the current study was to assess whether behavioural responses during milking in dual-purpose cattle are associated with genetic markers, previously linked to temperament traits in dairy and beef breeds. We focused on 185 lactating cows belonging to the Simmental strain (Romanian Spotted, national name), which were evaluated for their milking behaviour. Genotyping was performed using an 88-SNP panel selected based on prior associations with dairy and beef cattle temperament. We identified five SNPs that were significantly associated with milking reactivity in the Romanian Spotted breed, located in genes previously linked to neural development, stress response and behavioural regulation (USH2A, ADAMTS7, TBC1D2B and ZMAT4). Our findings suggest that milking behaviour in dual-purpose Simmental cattle is influenced by genetics, supporting the potential for including behavioural traits in future selection strategies. This study contributes to a better understanding of the genetic mechanisms underlying stress-related behaviours in dual-purpose cattle breeds. Full article

Bacterial chondronecrosis with osteomyelitis (BCO) is a major cause of lameness in broiler chickens. This condition arises when bacteria from the gastrointestinal or aerosol tract migrate to infect bone microfractures, often exacerbated by rapid growth, reduced blood flow, and mechanical stress. As concerns about antibiotic resistance grow, probiotics have gained attention for their potential to improve gut health and reduce systemic bacterial load. This study evaluated the efficacy of a probiotic program comprising an Enterococcus faecium-based spray (2 × 109 CFU/bird at hatch) and a triple-strain Bacillus-based feed additive (B. subtilis 597, B. subtilis 600, and B. amyloliquefaciens 516 at 500 g/t feed from day 1 to 56), applied individually or in combination. A wire-flooring challenge model was used to simulate BCO transmission. A total of 1560 Cobb 500 broilers were randomly assigned to five groups: T1 (positive control), T2 (negative control), T3 (E. faecium spray only), T4 (Bacillus feed supplement only), and T5 (combined treatment). Lameness was evaluated daily from day 21 to 56 through clinical observation and necropsy. The challenge model was validated with >70% lameness in T1. All probiotic treatments significantly reduced lameness compared to T2 (p < 0.05): 35.4% in T3, 36.7% in T4, and 47.6% in T5. The combined treatment resulted in the statistically highest reduction in lameness incidence, indicating a synergistic rather than merely additive effect compared to individual treatments. These findings support the use of targeted probiotic strategies to reduce BCO lameness and enhance skeletal health and welfare in broilers. Full article

The welfare of animals in zoos has come under increasing scrutiny as public awareness grows around the biological needs of captive species. It is also becoming clear that promoting positive welfare experiences upholds population management and conservation aims. This paper re-evaluates current welfare frameworks in zoological institutions, advocating for evidence-based practices, multi-dimensional welfare metrics, and greater emphasis on species-specific needs, as well as the importance of input-based approaches to assess the welfare of zoo animals. By evaluating the limitations of current welfare practices (e.g., a lack of species-specific assessment protocols or sound husbandry evidence to base measures on) and presenting potential areas for improvement, this paper identifies ways that sound baselines for meaningful zoo animal welfare outputs can be created. Although current welfare policies from large zoo membership organisations stipulate assessment of welfare outputs as key to improving animal welfare standards, such outputs can only be positive if inputs are species-specific and relevant to the animals being housed. Practices such as the use of environmental enrichment (for example) need to be further refined to ensure they provide meaningful outputs (for the individuals) from the inputs that create them. Understanding the animal’s needs to ensure that the goal of enrichment is clear benefits both the animal who is provided with the enrichment and the human caregivers as husbandry and management becomes easier. A focus on welfare outputs is commendable and (especially when considering emotional outputs) is indeed a gold standard to aim for, yet we must not lose sight of striving for improvements to housing, husbandry, and species-specific care. Without such fundamental support from correct inputs, outputs are unlikely to be truly (or meaningfully) positive. Therefore, consistent re-examination of inputs is required to make sure they uphold an individual’s attainment of good welfare. Full article

Metritis is one of the most common postpartum diseases in dairy cows, associated with impaired reproductive performance and substantial economic losses. In this study, we investigated the potential of machine learning (ML) techniques applied to physiological, behavioural, and milk quality parameters for the early detection of metritis in dairy cows during the postpartum period. A total of 2707 daily observations were collected from 94 cows in early lactation, of which 11 cows (275 records) were diagnosed with metritis. The dataset included daily measurements of body weight, rumination time, milk yield, milk composition (fat, protein, lactose), somatic cell count (SCC), and feed intake. Five classification models—partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA), random forest (RF), support vector machine (SVM), neural network (NN), and an Ensemble model—were developed using standardised features and stratified 80/20 training/test splits. To address class imbalance, model loss functions were adjusted using class weights. Models were evaluated based on accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values (PPV, NPV), area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) area under the curve (AUC), and Matthews correlation coefficient (MCC). The NN model demonstrated the highest overall performance (accuracy = 96.1%, AUC = 96.3%, MCC = 0.79), indicating strong capability in distinguishing both healthy and diseased animals. The SVM achieved the highest sensitivity (90.9%), while RF and Ensemble models showed high specificity (>98%) and PPV. This study provides novel evidence that ML methods can effectively detect metritis using routinely collected, non-invasive on-farm data. Our findings support the integration of neural and Ensemble learning models into automated health monitoring systems to enable earlier disease detection and improved animal welfare. Although external validation was not performed, internal cross-validation demonstrated consistent performance across models, suggesting suitability for application in multi-farm settings. To the best of our knowledge, this is among the first studies to apply ML for early metritis detection based exclusively only automated herd data. Full article

A total of 254 participants (aged 7–18) were surveyed, with 113 completing the full circuit, which included species from distinct phylogenetic groups: monkey, macaw, caiman, frog, fish, and tarantula. Qualitative analysis (n = 254) evaluated children’s recognition of animal needs, whereas quantitative analysis (n = 113) examined how phylogenetic distance, participants’ emotional state, and overall welfare perception influenced animal and environmental assessments—a structured survey evaluating perceived animal health, enclosure conditions, and behavioral expression. Participants’ understanding of animal welfare extended beyond basic needs, recognizing the importance of species-specific behaviors and appropriate environments. Environmental and animal assessment scores were significantly influenced by species, participants’ emotional states, and overall welfare perceptions: fish received the highest scores, positive emotions were associated with higher ratings, and a better overall welfare perception correlated with more favorable assessments. We inferred that phylogenetic distance, emotional state, and general welfare impressions shaped how children and adolescents evaluate animal welfare. The study supported zoo-based educational strategies and reinforced the role of zoos in promoting welfare awareness and conservation-oriented attitudes. Full article

Animal welfare is influenced by the cumulative life experiences of an individual. Among these, exposure to chronic stressors has a significant impact on both physical and mental health, contributing to premature aging—a process linked to telomere shortening. Conversely, positive experiences have been shown to mitigate, delay, and sometimes reverse telomere attrition. This suggests that telomere length could be a reliable indicator for assessing animal welfare. This study explored the association between telomere length and characteristics such as life history, environment, and health in domestic dogs. Buccal swabs collected DNA samples from 250 dogs, and telomere length was quantified via qPCR. Our findings revealed that environmental factors significantly influenced telomere length. Dogs housed in kennels or subjected to low physical activity levels exhibited shorter telomeres. Similarly, dogs living in groups of more than five dogs had shorter telomeres, and male dogs were found to have longer telomeres than females. Overall, these results highlight the importance of environmental conditions in influencing telomere length in dogs and the potential to use this biological indicator to evaluate animal welfare. In 2020, the European Union endorsed its “Farm-to-Fork” strategy, emphasizing the need for transparency in the food production chain and communication of the sustainability level and nutritional value of food products to the consumer through labeling. For animal-based products, this also includes information about the husbandry systems under which the animals are raised. At the same time, people are becoming increasingly concerned both as citizens and as consumers about animal welfare issues in production species, as animal welfare is considered an integral part of sustainability and food security. This has led to the development of various enhanced animal welfare labeling schemes, initiated by public or private entities, or even as a partnership of both. Specifically for cattle, sheep, and goats, various standards have been developed and implemented in Europe, all establishing higher welfare standards compared to conventional farming, and in some cases exceeding the minimum requirements for organic farming as set by Regulation (EU) 2018/848. Most of these standards, especially those developed by NGOs advocating for animal welfare or through public initiative, were developed for semi-intensive to extensive systems. They primarily incorporate animal-based measures, including positive welfare indicators, offering a holistic approach to animal welfare evaluation. Although there is significant heterogeneity in European animal welfare standards, nearly all of them promote access to pasture, comfort, environmental enrichment, and, in some cases, even mother–young bonding. Feline healthcare phobia is a major challenge in veterinary practice, limiting medical care and increasing stress for cats, owners, and veterinarians. Traditional desensitization–counter-conditioning (DS-CC) protocols aim to reduce fear responses, but their success is limited in sensitized cats. This study evaluates whether gabapentin can improve the efficiency of DS-CC training in healthcare phobia in cats. Forty-two sensitized cats participated in a claw-trimming learning protocol. Using a double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial, the cats followed 10 training sessions: the first 5 under one product and the last 5 under the other one. Their progression through the learning steps was monitored. The results indicate that gabapentin significantly accelerated the cats’ ability to complete DS-CC steps, suggesting a positive effect on the learning process. While some side effects, such as mild sedation and ataxia, were observed in 42% of the cats, they were transient and did not hinder participation. These findings suggest that gabapentin should be added when engaging patients in DS-CC protocols in order to lower the time needed to achieve therapy, which will improve the overall welfare of our patients. Further studies are needed to confirm these results in other types of therapies and in a clinical setting. Full article

Waqf investment funds represent an innovative approach to sustainable finance, integrating Islamic investment principles with contemporary social and economic goals. The research explores how Waqf investment funds affect socio-economic factors in Saudi Arabia through their influence on personal income, healthcare systems, and education while analyzing financial sustainability. The study assessed primary socio-economic indicators through beneficiary survey data, expert interviews, and secondary sources. The study used chi-square tests, exploratory factor analysis (EFA), and regression analysis to evaluate the long-term impact of the funds on social welfare and economic stability. The results highlight several significant achievements, the most important of which is that personal income benefited most from enhanced purchasing power. At the same time, healthcare outcomes improved significantly due to support for chronic disease treatments. Support for student housing and living services positively impacted the education sector by providing learning stability and access to educational opportunities. Financial sustainability reached its peak through improved financial security measures. The full potential of Waqf investment funds remains restricted because they face continuous issues with investment diversification, governance effectiveness, and entrepreneurial support. The results show that Waqf investment funds work as a welfare tool while also serving as a strategic tool for sustainable development in line with Saudi Vision 2030 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
