The southern Great Xing’an Range is located in the overlap zone of the Paleo-Asian Ocean metallogenic domain and the Circum-Pacific metallogenic domain. It hosts numerous Sn-polymetallic deposits, such as Weilasituo, Bianjiadayuan, Huanggang, and Dajing, and witnessed multiple episodes of magmatism during the Late Mesozoic. The study area is situated within the Huanggangliang-Ganzhuermiao metallogenic belt in the southern Great Xing’an Range. The region has witnessed extensive magmatism, with Mesozoic magmatic activities being particularly closely linked to regional mineralization. We present petrographic, zircon U-Pb chronological, lithogeochemical, and Lu-Hf isotopic analyses of the Yexilinhundi granites. The results indicate that the granite porphyry and granodiorite were emplaced during the Late Jurassic. Both rocks exhibit high SiO2, K2O + Na2O, differentiation index (DI), and 10,000 Ga/Al ratios, coupled with low MgO contents. They show distinct fractionation between light and heavy rare earth elements (LREEs and HREEs), exhibit Eu anomalies, and have low whole-rock zircon saturation temperatures (Tzr), collectively demonstrating characteristics of highly fractionated I-type granites. The εHf(t) values of the granites range from 0.600 to 9.14, with young two-stage model ages (TDM2 = 616.0~1158 Ma), indicating that the magmatic source originated from partial melting of Mesoproterozoic-Neoproterozoic juvenile crust. This study proposes that the granites formed in a post-collisional/post-orogenic extensional setting associated with the subduction of the Mongol-Okhotsk Ocean, providing a scientific basis for understanding the relationship between the formation of Sn-polymetallic deposits and granitic magmatic evolution in the study area. Three-dimensional geological modeling combined with the information value method offers a powerful approach for predicting mineralization in complex geological settings. This study applies these techniques to the Bainiuchang Ag polymetallic deposit in Southwest China. We constructed a detailed 3D geological model to identify key geological factors influencing mineralization, such as the F3 fault, secondary faults, and the middle Cambrian Tianpeng Formation. Using the information value method, we evaluated the mineralization potential of each unit in the study area. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and fractal analysis were employed to determine an optimal threshold (information value > 2.6) for delineating high-potential exploration targets. Our results identified three priority targets (A1, A2, and A3), demonstrating the effectiveness of integrating 3D modeling with probabilistic mineral prospectivity mapping. This approach provides a robust framework for deep and peripheral exploration in structurally complex deposits, offering valuable insights for future mineral exploration efforts. Full article

Deep-sea mining presents a critical sustainability paradox; it offers access to essential minerals for the technologies of the green transition (e.g., batteries, wind turbines, electric vehicles) yet threatens fragile marine ecosystems. As the terrestrial sources of these materials face mounting geopolitical, environmental, and ethical constraints, undersea deposits are increasingly being viewed as alternatives. However, the extraction technologies remain unproven at large scales, posing risks related to biodiversity loss, sediment disruption, and altered oceanic carbon cycles. This paper explores how deep-sea mining might be reconciled with sustainable development, arguing that its viability hinges on addressing five interdependent challenges—technological readiness, environmental protection, economic feasibility, robust governance, and social acceptability. Progress requires parallel advancements across all domains. This paper reviews the current knowledge of deep-sea resources and extraction methods, analyzes the ecological and sociopolitical risks, and proposes systemic solutions, including the implementation of stringent regulatory frameworks, technological innovation, responsible terrestrial sourcing, and circular economy strategies. A precautionary and integrated approach is emphasized to ensure that the securing of critical minerals does not compromise marine ecosystem health or long-term sustainability objectives. Full article

This study demonstrated the successful recovery of zinc, lead, and copper collective concentrates from historical metal-bearing mine tailings (sulfide–polymetallic ore with a composition of 7.38% Zn, 1.45% Pb, and 0.49% Cu) using froth flotation techniques, which were originally developed during uranium ore mining. Froth flotation techniques were used to justify suitability for recovering metals. The effects of a dosage of the foaming agent Polyethylene glycol (PEG 600) at 50 and 100 g t−1, collector types Aerophine 3418A (AERO), Danafloat 067 (DF), and potassium ethyl xanthate (KEX) at 50 and 80 g t−1, and a suspension density of 300 and 500 g L−1 on froth flotation collective concentrates were investigated. The final collective concentrate achieved recoveries exceeding 91% for lead (Pb), 88% for copper (Cu), and 87% for zinc (Zn). The obtained concentrates were analyzed using Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS) and X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometry (XRF), while selected samples were further examined via Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) with Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS). The resulting sulfide concentrates can subsequently be treated using suitable hydrometallurgical techniques. The application of these concentrates in metal production would help reduce the environmental burden of mining activities. Full article

This study focuses on the monitoring and early warning of landslide hazards induced by blasting caving in the Shizhuyuan polymetallic mine. A 30-channel microseismic monitoring system was deployed to capture the spatiotemporal characteristics of rock mass fracturing during a large-scale directional stratified blasting operation (419 tons) conducted on 21 June 2012. A total of 85 microseismic events were recorded, revealing two distinct zones of intense rock failure: Zone I (below 630 m elevation, P1–P3, C6–C8) and Zone II (above 630 m elevation, P4–P5, C1–C6). The upper slope collapse occurred within 5 min post-blasting, as documented by real-time monitoring and video recordings. Principal component analysis (PCA) was applied to 54 microseismic events in Zone II to determine the kinematic characteristics of the slip surface, yielding a dip direction of 324.6° and a dip angle of 73.2°. Complementary moment tensor analysis further revealed that shear failure dominated the slope instability, with pronounced shear fracturing observed in the 645–700 m height range. This study innovatively integrates spatial microseismic event distribution with geomechanical mechanisms, elucidating the dynamic evolution of blasting-induced landslides. The proposed methodology provides a novel approach for monitoring and forecasting slope instability triggered by underground mining, offering significant implications for disaster prevention in similar mining contexts. Information regarding the impact of polymetallic exposure on metabolic syndrome (MetS) among residents living near abandoned Pb-Zn mines is limited. Our objective was to investigate the impact of co-exposure to metal mixtures on the prevalence of MetS among residents. ICP-MS was used to measure the levels of 24 metals in the urine of 1744 participants, including 723 participants living near abandoned Pb-Zn mines, labeled as exposed area, and 1021 participants from other towns, labeled as reference area in the same city. Multivariable generalized linear regression, adaptive LASSO penalized regression, and BKMR were used to assess the associations between metals and MetS. The levels of eleven metals were higher, while those of nine metals were lower in the exposed area than those in the reference area. Mg, Cd, Ti, TI, Zn, Rb, and Pb were selected as important MetS predictors using LASSO regression. In exposed area, urinary Zn and TI were positively associated with MetS, whereas Mg was negatively associated with MetS. In the reference area, urinary Zn was positively associated with MetS, whereas Mg and Ti were negatively associated with MetS. The BKMR model indicates a statistically significant positive overall effect of the seven metal mixtures on MetS in the exposed area. Polymetallic exposure was positively associated with MetS risk in the abandoned Pb-Zn mining areas, suggesting that excessive Zn and TI may be associated with a higher MetS risk among residents living near abandoned Pb-Zn mines. The Jiapigou mining district (>180 t Au) is an important gold district in China. For a long time, the ore genesis of the gold deposits in the Jiapigou district has been a subject of controversy and differing opinions, which has severely hindered metallogenic theories and mineral exploration. Here we present a comprehensive investigation including geology, fluid inclusions (FIs), and H–O–S isotopic data for the Naizhigou deposit in the Jiapigou district to elucidate the sources of orefluids and metals, as well as the metallogenic mechanism. The results show the following: (1) The Naizhigou deposit is characterized by quartz vein-type ores and is hosted in the Middle Jurassic granitic pluton. Native gold and sulfides were mainly deposited in the second stage (quartz–polymetallic sulfides) compared with the first (quartz–pyrite–molybdenite) and third (quartz–calcite) stages. (2) The FI studies indicated that the orefluids evolved from the early–main-stage CO2–H2O–NaCl system to the late-stage H2O–NaCl system and have homogenization temperatures of 289–363, 210–282, and 124–276 °C and salinities of 4.1–20.9, 5.8–16.4, and 6.1–12.7 wt% NaCl equivalent, respectively. Fluid boiling and fluid mixing collectively controlled the precipitation of gold and ore-forming elements. (3) The δD values of the FIs hosted in quartz from the three stags range from −81 to −75 ‰, from −99 to −86 ‰, and from −110 to −101 ‰, while δ18Owater values of these FIs range from 5.3 to 5.9 ‰, from 1.1 to 5.2 ‰, and from −2.1 to −0.7 ‰, respectively. Pyrite samples from the three stages in the Naizhigou deposit have δ34S values of 2.1 to 2.5 ‰, 3.1 to 4.3 ‰, and 3.8 to 3.9 ‰, respectively. The stable isotopes indicate that the orefluids and metals mainly originated from magma. A comparative study of regional observations reveals that the Naizhigou deposit is a magmatic-related mesothermal gold deposit, rather than a metamorphism-related orogenic gold deposit. The estimated ore-forming depths are 4.0–20.7 km, with exhumation depths of 4.1–5.5 km, which indicated that the deposit has been well preserved. Regionally, the new exploration strategies should place greater emphasis on work concerning ore-related plutons, ore-controlling faults, and hydrothermal alteration. Full article

Gold is a vital strategic resource for many countries. The Laozhaiwan area is an important gold resource base in Yunnan Province and even nationwide. Conducting mineral resource exploration in this region to increase gold reserves is of great significance. The application of remote sensing technology in mineral resource exploration is a green and efficient technical approach, which has been widely utilized in the field of mineral resource prospecting. This study selects the Laozhaiwan area in the southeastern part of Yunnan Province as the research region. Linear and ring structures were extracted using the remote sensing visual interpretation method based on Sentinel-2A multispectral data. Additionally, Sentinel-2A, ASTER, and ZY1-02D data were used to extract iron-stained, hydroxyl, silicification, and limonite alteration information through Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Spectral Angle Mapper (SAM) methods. Additionally, 50 linear structures and 12 ring structures were extracted. A comprehensive analysis of geological data reveals that alteration minerals and linear-ring structures are closely related to mineralization, providing valuable indicators for mineral resource exploration. By comprehensively analyzing the alteration information and remote sensing interpretation results of the linear-ring structures, two prospective areas for mineral exploration were delineated. Field investigations and petrographic studies confirmed the reliability of remote sensing technology in mineral exploration. The mineral exploration method based on multi-source remote sensing technology can clearly reflect various alteration information and linear-ring structural data. It provides remote sensing geological insights for geological survey work and has great application potential in the field of mineral resource exploration. Full article

The Dulong deposit in Wenshan, southeastern Yunnan Province, is rich in zinc, tin, and copper resources, accompanied by rare metals such as indium and silver. It is a particularly important indium production base, with reserves of approximately 7000 tons, ranking first globally. Enrichment and recovery of indium-bearing minerals are mainly achieved through mineral processing technology. However, the recovery rate of indium in the Dulong concentrator remains relatively low, and there is an insufficient understanding of its occurrence state and distribution characteristics, resulting in marked indium resource wastage. Here, we conducted a systematic process mineralogy study on indium-bearing polymetallic ore in the Dulong concentrator. The average grade of indium in the ore is 43.87 g/t, mainly occurring in marmatite (63.63%), supplemented by that in silicate minerals (23.31%), chalcopyrite (7.84%), and pyrrhotite (4.22%). The indium has a relatively dispersed distribution, which is inconducive to enrichment and recovery. The substitution mechanism of indium in marmatite was investigated using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. This revealed a positive correlation between indium and copper, allowing us to revise the substitution relationship to: ZnxS+Cu++In3+Znx2CuInS+2Zn2+ or Znx1FeS+Cu++In3+Znx2CuInS+Zn2++Fe2+. Electron probe microanalysis revealed the presence of roquesite (CuInS2), an independent indium mineral not previously reported from this deposit. Our detailed investigation of the Dulong concentrator mineral processing technology showed that the recovery rate of indium from marmatite is currently poor, at only 48.01%. To improve the comprehensive utilization rate of indium resources, it will be necessary to further increase the recovery rate from marmatite and explore the flotation recovery of indium from chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite. The data on the volumetric radon activity of the Akchatau territory were systematized in the context of radioecological safety. Radon (Rn222 and Rn220) and indoor radon (isotopes Po, Pb, and Bi) make a significant contribution to radon radiation in residential and industrial premises. Increased radon concentration in a number of areas is associated with the Akchatau tungsten–molybdenum mine. The source of radon in geological terms is acid leucocratic granites in the northwestern and southeastern parts of the studied territory. Seasonal assessment of radon radiation was carried out using modern devices “Alfarad Plus” and “Ramon-Radon”. Frequency analysis of the average annual equivalent equilibrium concentration (EEC) in 181 premises showed that only in 47.5% of the premises does the volumetric radon activity not exceed the current standards (200 Bq/m3). Differentiated values of radon concentration were obtained in cases where daily and seasonal observations were carried out. In 43.1% of premises, the effective dose varies from 6.6 mSv/year to 33 mSv/year, and for 9.4% of premises, from 33 mSv/year to 680 mSv/year. The increased radon concentration is caused by high exhalation from the soil surface, the radioactivity of building materials, and low air exchange in the surveyed premises. In the northwestern part of Akchatau, anomalous zones were found where the exposure dose rate of gamma radiation exceeds 0.6 mkSv/hour. An objective assessment of radon largely depends on a number of factors that take into account the geological, technical, atmospheric, and climatic conditions of the region. Therefore, when planning an optimal radon rehabilitation strategy, it is necessary to take the following factors into account: the design features of residential premises and socio-economic conditions. Practical recommendations are given for radiation-ecological and hygienic monitoring of radon safety levels in the environment to reduce effective doses on the population. Full article

Multiple occurrences of adakitic rocks, with crystallization ages clustering around ~160 Ma, have been documented in the Zhuxi district, northeast Jiangxi Province, South China. This research identifies a new adakitic biotite granite porphyry within the Zhuxi W-Cu polymetallic deposit. Zircon U-Pb geochronology of this porphyry yields a crystallization age of 161.6 ± 2.1 Ma. Integrated with previously published data, the adakitic rocks in the study area—comprising diorite porphyrite, biotite quartz monzonite porphyry, and the newly identified biotite granite porphyry—are predominantly calc-alkaline and peraluminous. They exhibit enrichment in light rare-earth elements (LREEs) and depletion in heavy rare-earth elements (HREEs), with slight negative Eu anomalies. The trace element patterns are characterized by enrichment in Ba, U, K, Pb, and Sr, alongside negative Nb, Ta, P, and Ti anomalies, indicative of arc-like magmatic signatures. Comparative analysis of geological and geochemical characteristics suggests that these three rock types are not comagmatic. Petrogenesis of the Zhuxi adakitic suite is linked to a dynamic tectonic regime involving Mesozoic crustal thickening, subsequent delamination, and lithospheric extension. Asthenospheric upwelling likely triggered partial melting of the overlying metasomatized lithospheric mantle, generating primary mantle-derived magmas. Underplating and advection of heat by these magmas induced partial melting of the thickened lower crust, forming the biotite granite porphyry. Partial melting of delaminated lower crustal material, interacting with the asthenosphere or asthenosphere-derived melts, likely generated the diorite porphyrite. The biotite quartz monzonite porphyry is interpreted to have formed from mantle-derived magmas that underwent assimilation of, or mixing with, silicic crustal melts during ascent. The ~160 Ma crystallization ages of these adakitic rocks are broadly contemporaneous with W-Mo mineralization in the Taqian mining area of the Zhuxi district. Furthermore, their geochemical signatures imply a prospective metallogenic setting for Cu-Mo mineralization around this period in the Taqian area. Full article

As strategic critical metals, tungsten (W) and tin (Sn) require efficient exploration methods for effective resource development. This study implemented an advanced spread-spectrum induced polarization (SSIP) method in the Xitian mining district of southern China. Through optimized survey system configuration (maximum current electrode spacing of 5200 m, 12-channel acquisition, and five discrete frequency points), we achieved significant advancements: (1) a penetration depth of 1200 m, and (2) three- to five-times higher data acquisition efficiency compared to conventional symmetrical quadrupole arrays. Inversion results of resistivity and chargeability profiles from two parallel survey lines (total length 2.4 km) demonstrated an 85% spatial correlation between resistivity and chargeability anomalies, successfully identifying three mineralized veins. Drill-hole verification confirmed the presence of greisen veins (characterized by low resistivity <100 Ωm and high chargeability > 3%) and skarn veins (moderate resistivity 150–200 Ωm and chargeability 1.5–2%). The method exhibits a detection sensitivity of 0.5% chargeability contrast for deep-seated W-Sn polymetallic deposits, providing quantitative technical references for similar deposit exploration. The Iberian Pyrite Belt (IPB) contains the world’s largest massive sulfide deposit, and, due to extensive mining developed during the last 200 years, large amounts of mining waste have been abandoned in this area, with roasted pyrite ash being the focus of this study. Polymetallic mining is also classified as a NORM (naturally occurring radioactive material) activity, thus the main objective of this work was to develop a radiological and physicochemical characterization of this waste (mineral phases, elemental and radionuclide concentrations) in order to perform a valorization diagnosis of this material. The composition of this waste strongly depends on its origin (mine), and is mainly formed by iron oxides (hematite, Fe₂O₃) and heavy metals and metalloids such as As, Pb, Zn, and Cu, in levels 2–4 orders of magnitude higher than those of undisturbed soils, depending on each particular element. However, the average natural radionuclide levels are similar to those of unperturbed soils (around 30 Bqkg−1 of 238U-series, 50 Bqkg−1 of 232Th, and 70 Bqkg−1 for 40K), thus they are below the limits established by European Union regulations to require radiological control during their future valorization. As the main potential applications of roasted pyrite ash, the valorization diagnosis indicates that it can be used as a source of Fe (FeCl₃ or FeSO₄), or an additive in the manufacturing of cements, pigments, etc. Full article

Its southeastern Fudiyingzi–Bacheli area, located at the intersection of the NW-trending copper and NE-trending gold belts, exhibits favorable mineralization conditions. Despite over 70 years of placer gold mining and the discovery of one small copper deposit and one gold deposit, the area remains underexplored with significant peripheral exploration potential. This study integrates 1:50,000 geological mapping, high-precision magnetic surveys, phase-induced polarization, and soil geochemistry through multi-source data fusion for comprehensive mineral prediction. Key steps include delineating Cu, Au, and Mo anomalies and analyzing their associations with Zn, Cd, Ag, As, etc.; inferring NE-, NW-, and near-EW-trending linear structures via magnetic boundary enhancement; dividing high/low resistivity zones and identifying nine significant and six weak phase anomalies using phase-induced polarization; establishing a mineralization model based on typical deposits; and delineating four priority exploration targets. These results provide a scientific basis for further exploration in shallow coverage areas. Full article

With the increasing demand for mineral resources, sustainable mining development faces challenges such as low resource utilization efficiency. Ore blending optimization has emerged as a critical approach to enhance resource utilization. This study constructs a multi-objective ore blending optimization system for complex polymetallic open-pit mines based on the improved matter-element extension model and NSGA-II algorithm. By identifying key blending factors, objective functions are established to minimize both total ore quantity deviation and grade deviation, with six constraints defined to reflect production capacity limits. The NSGA-II algorithm is employed to solve the multi-objective optimization problem, generating a Pareto optimal solution set from which the optimal ore blending scheme is selected using the improved matter-element extension model. A case verification at Dabaoshan Mine demonstrates that the model-verified scheme achieves 1.035% higher total production accuracy than the planned value and 2.828% higher than actual production, while improving Cu grade deviation accuracy by 7.021% over the plan and 1.064% over actual production, and S grade deviation accuracy by 33.027% over the plan and 3.127% over actual production. This study, through the construction of systematic ore blending theory and empirical analysis, provides an important theoretical framework and methodological support for subsequent research on ore blending in polymetallic open-pit mines. It demonstrates significant practical application value in Dabaoshan Mine, offering an intelligent mine solution that combines scientific rationality and engineering practicability for polymetallic open-pit mines.
