To address concrete cracking in submerged box-shaped hollow thin-walled piers under static ice and hydrostatic pressure, this study proposes a composite strengthening method employing externally bonded steel plates coupled with concrete infill blocks. Based on mechanical theoretical derivation, the strengthened structure is simplified as a cooperative system comprising compression–truss and suspended-cable mechanisms. Key design parameters—including steel plate span, thickness, infill block height, and plate corner configuration—are optimized using a genetic algorithm. The optimization objective minimizes strengthening cost, subject to constraints of concrete crack resistance, steel plate strength, and deformation control, ultimately determining the numerically optimal composite strengthening solution. Validation through planar finite element models demonstrates that: (1) the proposed system effectively suppresses cracking in the original structure; (2) peak stresses in the steel plates remain below the yield strength of Q345 steel; and (3) the theoretical design is reasonable and effective, which can solve the cracking problem of the wading-tank hollow thin-walled pier under the action of surrounding load. Addressing the issue of stress concentration at the toe of steel plate shear walls, which is susceptible to local buckling and brittle failure under seismic loading, this paper innovatively proposes a disc spring-laminated rubber energy dissipation device (DSLRDD) newly designed for application at the wall toe of the shear wall structures. Firstly, the structure characteristics and energy dissipation principle of the DSLRDD are described. Secondly, the finite element model of the DSLRDD is established in ABAQUS. Furthermore, the optimal design parameters’ values of DSLRDD are analyzed and given by taking the stacking arrangement of disc springs, the thickness ratio of steel plate to rubber layer, and the yield strength of steel plate as three main parameters. It is recommended that in DSLRDD, the disc spring stacking arrangement adopts either two pieces in series or a composite of series–parallel. At the same time, the range of the thickness ratio between the steel plate and the rubber layer is defined as being between 1.25 and 2.5, and the yield strength value of the steel plate is determined as 400 MPa. Finally, to verify the energy dissipation capacity of the DSLRDD, a double corrugated steel plate shear wall (DCSPSW) is taken as the experimental structure. The model has been verified against the test data, with a maximum damping force error of 14.4%, ensuring reliable modeling. DSLRDD models with the disc spring stacking arrangements of two pieces in series and composite of series–parallel were established, respectively, and they were installed at the toe of the DCSPSW. The seismic performance of the DCSPSW before and after the installation of two different DSLRDDs is studied. The results show that the DSLRDDs have obvious energy absorption capabilities. The energy dissipation factors of DCSPSW before and after installing DSLRDD were increased by 10.0% and 8.9%, respectively. DCSPSW with DSLRDD exhibits better plasticity and bearing capacity under seismic action, and the stress and deformation are mainly concentrated on the DSLRDD instead of the wall toe. Moreover, it is recommended to use the stacking arrangement of two series disc springs with a simple structure. In conclusion, the DSLRDD has excellent energy dissipation capacity and can be fully applied to practical projects. Full article

Expandable polystyrene (EPS) nozzle covers can be used to replace traditional metal nozzle covers due to their excellent mechanical properties, as well as being lightweight and ablatable. As an important part of the solid rocket motor, the nozzle cover needs to be designed according to the requirements of the overall system. This study lays a theoretical foundation for the engineering design and performance optimization of the EPS nozzle cover. In this paper, the method of combining test research and numerical simulation is used to explore the pressure bearing capacity of EPS nozzle covers with different thicknesses under linear load. Firstly, the quasi-static tensile, compression and shear tests of EPS materials were carried out by universal testing machine, and the key parameters such as stress-strain curve, elastic modulus and yield strength were obtained; Based on the experimental data, the constitutive model of EPS material with respect to density is fitted and modified; The VUMAT subroutine of the material was written in Fortran language, and the mechanical properties of the nozzle cover with different material model distribution schemes and different thicknesses were explored by ABAQUS finite element numerical simulation technology. The results indicate that the EPS nozzle cover design based on the two material model allocation schemes better aligns with practical conditions; when the end thickness of the EPS nozzle cover exceeds 3 mm, the opening pressure formula for the cover based on the pure shear theory of thin-walled circular plates becomes inapplicable; the EPS nozzle cover exhibits excellent pressure-bearing capacity and performance, with its pressure-bearing capacity showing a positive correlation with its end thickness, and an EPS nozzle cover with a 9 mm end thickness can withstand a pressure of 7.58 MPa (under internal pressure conditions); the pressure-bearing capacity of the EPS nozzle cover under internal pressure conditions is higher than under external pressure conditions, and when the end pressure-bearing surface thickness increases to 9 mm, the internal pressure-bearing capacity is 3.13 MPa higher than under external pressure conditions. Cross-plate joints between panels are commonly used in diaphragm wall construction to ensure structural integrity. However, research on the mechanical behaviour of these joints remains limited, and they are often disregarded in numerical modelling due to their complexity. This paper fabricated two types of specimens with cross-plate joints, which were subsequently employed in bending and shear tests, respectively. The load–displacement curves and the joint openings were experimentally measured. It was found that the load–displacement curves exhibited approximately four linear stages in the bending tests and two in the shear tests. Based on the test results, a multi-linear spring model was proposed to simplify the mechanical behaviour of the joints, and the stiffness of each linear stage was determined through back-analysis of the tested data. The calculated load–displacement curves ultimately agreed well with those obtained from the tests, with average errors of 3.6% in the bending test and 2.6% in the shear test. The proposed model was then applied to a devised case study, thereby demonstrating its capacity to capture joint opening phenomena and revealing the spatial variability of joint opening within the excavation depth. Compared with conventional 2D and 3D models, the proposed model yields displacement results that better reflect the actual deformation of the diaphragm wall. Furthermore, the precise modelling calculation for joints, which is time-consuming, is also avoided, and the calculation time of the proposed model is only 1.52 times that of the conventional 3D model. This article investigates the combined effects of different common defects on the structural integrity and operational and environmental safety in the operation of an existing Light Cycle Oil (LCO) storage tank. This study correlates all the tank defects (like corrosion and local plate thinning, deformations, and local stress concentrators) against the loads and their combinations that occur during the tank’s lifetime. All the information gathered by various inspection techniques is used together to create a digital twin of the equipment that will be further analyzed by Finite Element Analysis. A tank condition assessment is a complex activity, and it is based on the experience of the engineer performing it. Since there are multiple methods for performing a comprehensive analysis, starting from the basic visual inspection (which is the most important) and some measurements followed by analytical calculations, up to full wall thickness measurements, 3D scan of deformations and FEA analysis of the tank digital twin, it depends on the engineer performing the evaluation to chose the best method for each particular case from technical and economical point of views. The goal of this article is to demonstrate that analytical and FEA methods have the same result and also to establish a well-determined standard calculation model for future applications. To address the decline in the localization accuracy of magnetic adhesion wall-climbing robots operating on large steel structures, caused by visual occlusion, sensor drift, and environmental interference, this study proposes a simulation-based multi-sensor fusion localization method that integrates an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), Wheel Odometry (Odom), and Ultra-Wideband (UWB). An Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) is employed to integrate IMU and Odom measurements through a complementary filtering model, while a geometric residual-based weighting mechanism is introduced to optimize raw UWB ranging data. This enhances the accuracy and robustness of both the prediction and observation stages. All evaluations were conducted in a simulated environment, including scenarios on flat plates and spherical tank-shaped steel surfaces. The proposed method maintained a maximum localization error within 5 cm in both linear and closed-loop trajectories and achieved over 30% improvement in horizontal accuracy compared to baseline EKF-based approaches. The system exhibited consistent localization performance across varying surface geometries, providing technical support for robotic operations on large steel infrastructures. Full article

In this study, an effective strengthening method was investigated to improve the seismic performance of masonry brick walls. The strengthening method comprised the use of shotcrete, which was applied in both glass fiber-reinforced and unreinforced forms for steel plates and tie rods. Thirteen wall specimens constructed with vertical perforated masonry block bricks were tested under diagonal compression in accordance with ASTM E519 (2010). Reinforcement plates with different thicknesses (1.5 mm, 2 mm, and 3 mm) were anchored using 6 mm diameter tie rods. A specially designed steel frame and an experimental loading program with controlled deformation increments were employed to simulate the effects of reinforced concrete beam frame system on walls under the effect of diagonal loads caused by seismic loads. In addition, numerical simulations were conducted using three-dimensional finite element models in Abaqus Explicit software to validate the experimental results. The findings demonstrated that increasing the number of tie rods enhanced the shear strength and overall behavior of the walls. Steel plates effectively absorbed tensile stresses and limited crack propagation, while the fiber reinforcement in the shotcrete further improved wall strength and ductility. Overall, the proposed strengthening techniques provided significant improvements in the seismic resistance and energy absorption capacity of masonry walls, offering practical and reliable solutions to enhance the safety and durability of existing masonry structures. This paper presents a combined theoretical, numerical, and experimental analysis to investigate the lateral plastic crushing behavior and energy absorption of circular and non-circular thin-walled rings between two rigid plates. Theoretical solutions incorporating both linear material hardening and power-law material hardening models are solved via numerical shooting methods. The theoretically predicted force-denting displacement relations agree excellently with both FEA and experimental results. The FEA simulation clearly reveals the coexistence of an upper moving plastic region and a fixed bottom plastic region. A robust automatic extraction method of the fully plastic region at the bottom from FEA is proposed. A modified criterion considering the unloading effect based on the resultant moment of cross-section is proposed to allow accurate theoretical estimation of the fully plastic region length. The detailed study implies an abrupt and almost linear drop of the fully plastic region length after the maximum value by the proposed modified criterion, while the conventional fully plastic criterion leads to significant over-estimation of the length. Evolution patterns of the upper and lower plastic regions in FEA are clearly illustrated. Furthermore, the distribution of plastic energy dissipation is compared in the bottom and upper regions through FEA and theoretical results. Purely analytical solutions are formulated for linear hardening material case by elliptical integrals. A simple algebraic function solution is derived without necessity of solving differential equations for general power-law hardening material case by adopting a constant curvature assumption. Parametric analyses indicate the significant effect of ovality and hardening on plastic region evolution and crushing force. This paper should enhance the understanding of the crushing behavior of circular and non-circular rings applicable to the structural engineering and impact of the absorption domain. Full article

To enhance the bearing capacity of cable–pylon anchorage zones in cable-stayed bridges, this paper proposes the integral steel wall plate (IWP) structure and investigates the structural performance of its application in anchorage zones with a steel anchor beam and with a steel anchor box. The proposed structure contains an end plate, a surface plate, and several perforated side plates, forming steel cabins that encase the concrete pylon wall, where the steel and concrete are connected by perfobond connectors on side plates. A half-scaled experiment and a finite element analysis were first conducted on the IWP with the steel anchor beam to study the deformation at the steel–concrete interface, as well as the stress distribution in steel plates and rebars. The results were compared with experimental data of a conventional type of anchorage zone. Then, finite element models of anchorages with steel anchor boxes were established based on the geometries of an as-built bridge, and the performance of the IWP structure was compared with conventional details. Finally, the effects of plate thickness and connector arrangement were investigated. Results show that the proposed IWP structure offers excellent performance when applied with an anchor beam or anchor box, and it can effectively reduce principal tensile stress on the concrete pylon wall compared with conventional anchorage details. The dynamic model of a wheeled wall-climbing robot exhibits stage-specific changes when traversing different types of obstacles and during various stages of obstacle negotiation. Previous studies often employed remote control methods for obstacle-crossing control, which fail to dynamically adjust the torque distribution of magnetic wheels in response to real-time changes in the dynamic model. This limitation makes it challenging to precisely control the robot’s speed and attitude angles during the obstacle-crossing process. To address this issue, this paper first establishes a staged dynamic model for the wall-climbing robot under typical obstacle-crossing scenarios, including steps, 90° concave corners, 90° convex corners, and thin plates. Secondly, an adaptive controller based on a radial basis function neural network (RBFNN) is designed to effectively compensate for variations and uncertainties during the obstacle-crossing process. Finally, comparative simulations and physical experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The experimental results show that this method can quickly respond to the dynamic changes in the model and accurately track the trajectory, thereby improving the control precision and stability during the obstacle-crossing process. The superb dynamic performance of steel-plate composite (SC) structures under unexpected impact loading depends on the good design of the connection between the SC wall and foundation. This study investigated the flexural behavior and dynamic responses of SC wall-to-foundation connections subjected to low-velocity impact. Impact tests were performed on three SC connection specimens to evaluate failure mode, impact force, deflection, and strain responses. The effects of concrete strength grade and impact energy were analyzed in detail. All specimens exhibited flexural failure, with three distinct stages observed during impact. The experimental results demonstrated that compared to the specimen with C30 concrete, the specimen with C50 concrete significantly reduced wall damage, decreased deflections, and enhanced deflection recovery ability. It can be concluded that increasing the concrete strength grade effectively improves the impact resistance of SC wall-to-foundation connections. In addition, peak impact force, global deflection response, residual strains, and interface crack length were highly sensitive to changes in impact energy, whereas deflection recovery exhibited lower sensitivity. Furthermore, a finite element model was developed and validated against experimental results. Parametric studies explored the influence of key parameters with expanded ranges on the impact responses of SC wall-to-foundation connections. Full article

Transonic/supersonic wind tunnels are indispensable equipment for advanced aircraft to operate across subsonic, transonic, and supersonic regimes. The deformation of the flexible nozzle is the key to accurately controlling the Mach number of transonic wind tunnels. However, solving the deformation of flexible wall plates remains challenging due to the highly nonlinear relationship between wall loading and deformation, as well as the lack of simple yet effective mathematical models under complex boundary conditions. To accurately describe the deformation of flexible wall plates and improve computational efficiency, this study systematically investigates the deformation characteristics of flexible walls in two orthogonal directions and proposes an orthogonal beam function (OBF) model for characterizing small-deflection deformations. For large-deflection deformations in a flexible wall, an elliptic integral (EI) solution is introduced, and the OBF model is correspondingly modified. Experimental validation confirms that the OBF model effectively describes large-deflection deformations in a flexible wall. This research contributes to solving large-deflection deformation in flexible wall plates, enhancing both computational efficiency and accuracy. Full article

The presented research examines the performance characteristics of Brazed Plate Heat Exchangers through computational fluid dynamics (CFD), focusing on pressure drop calculations for single-phase flow within full channels of plates featuring dimpled corrugation. This work aims to bridge gaps in the literature, particularly regarding the underexplored behavior near the ports for the studied technology and establishing a framework for future conjugate heat transfer studies. A methodology for the domain generation was developed, integrating a preliminary forming simulation to reproduce the complex plate geometry. Comprehensive sensitivity analyses were conducted to evaluate the influence of different parameters and identify the optimal settings for obtaining reliable results. The findings indicate that the kε realizable turbulence model with enhanced wall treatment offers superior accuracy in predicting pressure drops, with errors within ±4.4%. Additionally, leveraging the information derived from CFD, a strategy to estimate contributions from different channel sections without a direct reliance on those simulations was developed, offering practical implications for plate design. This study presents a detailed analysis of the influence of hole presence and size on the behavior of CFRP composite plates subjected to axial compression. The plates were manufactured by an autoclave method from eight-ply laminate in a symmetrical fiber arrangement [45°/−45°/90°/0°2/90°/−45°/45°]. Four central hole plates of 0 mm (reference), 2 mm, 4 mm, and 8 mm in diameter were analyzed. Tests were conducted using a Cometech universal testing machine in combination with the ARAMIS digital image correlation (DIC) system, enabling the non-contact measurement of real-time displacements and local deformations in the region of interest. The novel feature of this work was its dual use of independent measurement methods—machine-based and DIC-based—allowing for the assessment of boundary condition effects and grip slippage on failure load accuracy. The experiments were carried out until complete structural failure, enabling a post-critical analysis of material behavior and failure modes for different geometric configurations. The study investigated load–deflection and load–shortening curves, failure mechanisms, and ultimate loads. The results showed that the presence of a hole leads to localized deformation, a change in the failure mode, and a nonlinear reduction in load-carrying capacity—by approximately 30% for the largest hole. These findings provide complementary data for the design of thin-walled composite components with technological openings and serve as a robust reference for numerical model validation. Full article

The growing need for lightweight, customizable electromagnetic wave absorbers with weather resistance in aerospace and electromagnetic compatibility applications motivates this study, which addresses the limitations of conventional materials in simultaneously achieving structural efficiency, broadband absorption, and environmental durability. We propose a fused deposition modeling (FDM)-based approach for fabricating lightweight wave-absorbing structures using acrylonitrile-styrene-acrylate (ASA)/multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) composites. Results demonstrate that CST Studio Suite simulations reveal a minimum reflection loss of −18.16 dB and an effective absorption bandwidth (RL < −10 dB) of 3.75 GHz for the 2 mm-thick composite plate when the MWCNT content is 2%. Through FDM fabrication and structural optimization, significant performance enhancements are achieved: The gradient honeycomb design with larger dimensions achieved an effective absorption bandwidth of 6.56 GHz and a minimum reflection loss of −32.60 dB. Meanwhile, the stacked stake structure exhibited a broader effective absorption bandwidth of 10.58 GHz, with its lowest reflection loss reaching −22.82 dB. This research provides innovative approaches for developing and manufacturing tailored lightweight electromagnetic wave-absorbing structures, which could be valuable for aerospace stealth technology and electromagnetic compatibility solutions.
