The objective of this research was to determine the in-pen behavior and carcass yield of MCPs fed two different diets and slaughtered at two different live weights. The MCP biotype has a slow growth rate because they are fed with forage resources and locally available unconventional feeds. Sixteen castrated MCPs were used: eight pigs under 40 kg live weight and eight pigs over 40 kg. The diets were prepared with corn, soy, vitamins, and minerals, different protein levels, and the same energy content. Pigs fed the corn–soybean diet had a higher daily feed intake (500 g/d) and a significantly increased daily weight gain (160 g/d) compared to pigs fed on the corn-only diet, achieving slaughter weight in less time (4.33 times faster in pigs slaughtered at 40 kg live weight and 2.44 times faster for pigs slaughtered at 80 kg live weight). Regarding carcass yield, fat was 10% higher in pigs slaughtered at 80 kg compared to those at 40 kg. Soybean meal feeding improved the in-pen performance of MCPs but did not improve carcass yield. At higher slaughter weights, fat yield increased, but meat yield did not change. Full article

The clinical case presented demonstrates how a person living with type 2 diabetes and treated with insulin reuses the same pen needle several times to save money and performs an incorrect maneuver while screwing the needle, which breaks, remains stuck at the end of the pen, and causes loss of insulin during subsequent use. The findings in this case study are observed in many others in clinical practice but have only been sporadically published. Who is responsible for incorrect injections? Indeed, health workers, diabetic patients, and all the other actors involved in diabetes care and insulin utilization share responsibility. Recommendations and guidelines are not enough to fill this gap. Moreover, not all healthcare providers (HCPs) know or adhere to them. It is observed daily that more than half of insulin users make mistakes that affect glycemic control, increase the risk of complications, and reduce the quality of life of people living with diabetes, who, by a rough estimate, make up a population of over 100 million in the world. This case study offers us the opportunity to briefly review the literature on the most common errors made during insulin injection technique and, therefore, consider how necessary it is to promote structured and coordinated actions among various actors to promote the culture of therapeutic education. The present study is aimed at investigating the effects of grazing on the meat quality of Tibetan sheep, as well as the associated molecular mechanisms. A total of ten Tibetan sheep were utilized and equally allocated into two groups: grazing and pen-feeding. To assess the intramuscular fat (IMF) content, Soxhlet extraction was performed on the biceps femoris muscle. Additionally, transcriptome sequencing was carried out to evaluate the expression profiles of RNAs, facilitating the construction of a ceRNA regulatory network. The results demonstrated that the IMF content in the grazing group was significantly higher compared to the pen-feeding group, implying that grazing might foster the formation of Type I muscle fibers, thereby enhancing meat quality. Moreover, the expression levels of circRNAs, such as novel_circ_001331, novel_circ_012918, novel_circ_029843, and novel_circ_059962, were markedly up-regulated in the grazing group. These circRNAs may alleviate the inhibitory effects on genes like COL8A1, MYLK3, and NOX4 by interacting with miR-381-y, miR-7144-x, miR-16-z, miR-8159-x, novel-m0040-3p, novel-m0092-5p, and oar-miR-329a-3p. These circRNAs and miRNAs are predominantly involved in the MAPK, Wnt, and VEGF signaling pathways and could be implicated in biological processes such as muscle fiber type switching and energy metabolism. This research offers valuable insights for improving the meat quality of Tibetan sheep and provides a foundation for exploring the role of circRNA and miRNA in the regulation of meat quality under grazing conditions. One hundred thirty-three high-risk crossbred beef steers and bulls (178.2 ± 20.9 kg) were used to evaluate dietary inclusion of a tannin (BXA) blend pellet during a 63 d receiving period and a 126 d grazing period compared with no dietary treatment (CON). Data were analyzed using SAS 9.4 with pen as the experimental unit. During receiving, no differences were noted on average daily gain (ADG) on a deads-out (p > 0.25) or deads-in (p > 0.75) basis. There were tendencies for increased DMI associated with BXA from D0–21, D23–42, and D0–42 (p < 0.13). During the grazing period, cattle fed BXA had greater ADG from D0–56, and D0–84 (p ≤ 0.05), and tended to have greater ADG from D0–28, D0–112, and D0–126 (p ≤ 0.09). Total period ADG (deads-out) did not differ between treatments (p = 0.18) nor on a deads-in basis (p = 0.20). No differences were noted in the percentage of animals treated for bovine respiratory disease (p = 0.19), death loss (p = 0.62), or percentage of animals removed as chronically morbid/dead (p = 0.90). Results indicate that BXA did not improve performance or health during the receiving period. However, this additive had positive effects during the grazing period. Full article

The use of hot mix asphalt (HMA) has several drawbacks, such as the emission of harmful gases into the atmosphere, difficulties in maintaining temperature over long distances, and the requirement for high energy consumption during preparation and installation. In order to solve these issues, this research aimed to produce High-Performance Cold Mix Asphalt (HP-CMA), in which Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) is used as a filler to replace limestone filler at 0%, 1.5%, 3%, 4.5%, and 6% of the aggregate weight. Indirect Tensile Stiffness Modulus (ITSM), moisture susceptibility, temperature susceptibility, and microstructural analysis tests were carried out. The results showed that the ITSM was considerably enhanced when OPC was utilized. When comparing HP-CMA with 3% OPC to the control HMA (100–150 pen), the ITSM increased by approximately 80% after three days. In contrast, HP-CMA with 4.5% OPC achieved the same ITSM as the control HMA (40–60 pen) after seven days. Moreover, the ITSM of the HMA 40–60 pen decreased by 91.93% when the temperature rose from 20 °C to 45 °C, whereas the ITSM of the HP-CMA with 6% OPC decreased by 42.47% over the same temperature range. This suggests that HP-CMA is more stable than the HMA 40–60 pen at elevated temperatures. The superior performance of the HP-CMA can be attributed to two essential factors: the improved binding effect due to the demulsification of the asphalt emulsion used as a binder, and the formation of hydration products from the added cement. This study determined the water-use efficiency for post-weaning growth performance of beef cattle of different frame sizes under intensive production systems. A total of 33 beef cattle weaners of three different frame sizes (small, medium, and large) were randomly allocated individually to metabolic pens. Feed and water were provided ad libitum. The water intake (WI), feed intake (FI), and weight were measured across different feeding phases (starter, grower, and finisher). Water consumption (WC) average daily gain (ADG), weight gain (WG), water intake efficiency (WIE), water footprint per animal (WFP/AU), and WFP/kg were computed. General Linear Model of Statical Analysis software (SAS) version 9.4 was used to analyse the data, and the means were separated using Fisher’s LSD test. The results showed that large-frame beef cattle had significantly higher (p < 0.05) WTf. (412.73 ± 27.27 kg) and WI (3394.09 ± 156.3 L), but also the largest WFP/AU (4407 ± 197.22 L). The medium-frame cattle achieved the highest ADG (1.48 ± 0.14 kg/day) and a moderate WIE (20.15 ± 2.18 L/kg gain), indicating an optimal trade-off between productivity and water use. The small-frame beef cattle exhibited the best WCE (0.051 ± 0.005 kg/L) and the lowest WFP/AU (3822 ± 197.22 L), highlighting superior water-use adaptability. Pearson’s correlation revealed that WCE was positively associated with ADG (r = 0.499; p < 0.05) and negatively with WIE (r = −0.987; p < 0.05). These findings suggest that medium-frame beef cattle provided a balanced compromise between growth performance and resource efficiency, making them more suitable for sustainable production in water-limited environments. Carnosic acid (CA), a natural phenolic terpenoid compound, is widely distributed in plants such as sage and rosemary, and exhibits a strong antioxidant capacity. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of different levels of CA on growth performance, antioxidant capacity, and intestinal health of yellow-feathered broilers, and then to determine the optimal dose of CA to promote sustainable broiler production. A total of 384 1-day-old yellow-feathered broilers were randomly allocated into six treatment groups with eight replicates per group and eight birds per replicate pen. The control group (CON) was fed a basal diet and the CA treated groups (CA5, CA10, CA20, CA40, and CA80) were fed diets given different doses of CA (5, 10, 20, 40, and 80 mg/kg), respectively, for 53 days (1~21 d and 22~53 d). The results showed that, in the later stages of the experiment, supplementation with 10, 20, and 40 mg/kg of CA increased (p < 0.05) the final body weight and average daily gain. Morphometric analyses of the jejunum showed that supplementation of CA increased (p < 0.05) the ratio of villus height to crypt depth (V/C). Antioxidant indices revealed that CA significantly reduced MDA levels in plasma, liver, and jejunum, while enhancing activities of GSH-Px, T-SOD, and T-AOC (p < 0.05). Moreover, CA upregulated hepatic Nrf2, HO-1, GSH-Px, and GSR expression via downregulated Keap1. The analysis of intestinal microbiota showed that CA increased (p < 0.05) microbial α diversity (Ace, Chao, and Sobs indices) and increased (p < 0.05) beneficial bacteria, such as Streptococcus, Enterococcus, and Phascolarctobacterium. In conclusion, CA improves growth performance, antioxidant capacity, intestinal health, and gut microbial diversity in broilers. Under the conditions of this experiment, quadratic regressions for different variables showed that the optimal range for supplemental CA in chicken’s diet was 19.11~76.85 mg/kg. Combined with experimental observation and regression analysis, the optimal level of supplementation was 40 mg/kg. Full article

Weaning is one of the most challenging stages in a piglet’s life, with multiple stressors contributing to poor gut health. For several years, zinc oxide (ZnO) was the preferred means of promoting a healthy gut and preventing post-weaning diarrhea (PWD). However, with the banning of its use at medicinal levels in the EU since 2022, alternatives are needed. Berberine (BBR), an isoquinoline alkaloid, has been used for centuries in Chinese medicine to treat diarrhea and has pharmacological properties that could make this molecule an attractive alternative to ZnO. The aim of this study was to investigate how berberine is metabolized in the intestinal tract and liver of weaned piglets; determine which metabolites are detected in intestinal contents and plasma; and whether a low dose can alter histomorphological parameters, short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production, and gut microbiota composition. A total of 60 piglets weaned at 4 weeks were divided into two groups (Control and BBR), each consisting of six pens of five animals. After two weeks of feeding with a normal diet or a berberine-supplemented diet (30 mg berberine/kg feed), berberine and its metabolites were quantified in intestinal contents and plasma by ultra-performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) on 12 animals per group (2 male piglets per pen). Moreover, villus length and crypt depth were measured in small-intestinal tissue, and 16S rRNA gene sequencing was performed to examine jejunal, cecal, and colonic gut microbiota composition. Our findings show that piglets metabolize berberine into phase I and II metabolites; however, a low dose does not affect their histomorphology, microbiota composition, or SCFA production. Background: A major challenge in adhesive dentistry, often leading to restoration failure, is microleakage. This in vitro comparative study was designed to assess microleakage at the tooth–composite interface. The investigation aimed to compare the sealing efficacy of two commonly used adhesive systems. Methods: Standardized Class I cavities were prepared on 20 extracted human molars and randomly divided into two groups (n = 10 each). Group A was treated with a fifth-generation total-etch adhesive (OptiBond™ Solo Plus, Kerr Corporation, Orange, CA, USA), and Group B received a seventh-generation self-etch adhesive (Adhese® Universal VivaPen®, Ivoclar Vivadent AG, Schaan, Liechtenstein). All restorations were completed using Herculite XRV composite resin. Microleakage was evaluated using dye penetration analysis after immersion in 2% methylene blue for 10 days, followed by longitudinal sectioning and microscopic measurement at 500× magnification. Results: The fifth-generation adhesive group showed a mean microleakage of 0.2503 ± 0.1921 mm, while the seventh-generation group recorded 0.2484 ± 0.1764 mm. Statistical analysis using an independent t-test revealed no significant difference between the groups (p = 0.696). Conclusions: Both adhesive systems demonstrated comparable performance in minimizing microleakage under standardized conditions. Although the total-etch group exhibited slightly lower numerical values, the difference was not statistically significant. These findings suggest that both adhesive approaches can be clinically effective when applied appropriately. Full article

Optimal commercial conditions have been shown to improve the performance and meat yield of broilers. Also, dietary 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (25OHD3; crystalline form) has not shown a negative impact on chicken health when it was fed at 10 times (10×) higher than 69 μg/kg. The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of up to 8 times (8×) higher than the commercial level (69 μg/kg of feed) of dietary 25OHD3 on the performance, breast meat yield, and serum 25OHD3 concentration of broilers. Eighteen male chicks were randomly assigned to each of 20 pens within each of the two dietary treatments. Treatments were commercial diets containing 250 IU/kg of vitamin D3 (control) for the starter [(0 to 14 days post-hatch (poh), grower (15 to 28 poh), and finisher (29 to 42 poh) dietary phases; or diets containing Hy-D (water-soluble source of 25OHD3) that consisted of 552 (8×) μg/kg of 25OHD3 for the starter, 276 (4×) μg/kg of 25OHD3 for the grower, and 34.5 (0.5×) μg/kg of 25OHD3 for the finisher dietary phases. Live performance variables as well as serum 25OHD3 concentrations were measured in each dietary phase. At 14, 28, and 39 poh, breast meat yield that included pectoralis major (P. major) and pectoralis minor (P. minor) muscle weights was determined in ten replications per dietary treatment. Breast yield was also calculated by adding the values of the P. major and P. minor muscles. From 14 to 42 poh, the Hy-D diets decreased (p < 0.0001) broiler body weight (BW) and BW gain and increased (p < 0.0001) total mortality and feed conversion ratio in comparison to control treatment groups. In addition, birds fed Hy-D diets had significantly (p < 0.0001) lower P. major and breast meat yields from 14 to 39 poh as compared to those birds fed the control diet. Serum 25OHD3 concentration was significantly (p < 0.0001) higher (10×) in birds that belonged to the Hy-D diet treatment than those in the control diet treatment group. These results indicate that the disproportionally high (8×) level of dietary 25OHD3 resulted in detrimental effects on the performance and meat yield of broilers. A reduction in both performance and meat yield of broilers in response to the elevated level of dietary 25OHD3 may have been due to vitamin D3 toxicity, which can result in an association with the overproduction of the active form of the vitamin in response to elevated serum concentrations of 25OHD3. Lighting influences broiler production, health, and behavior. The objective of this study was to examine the effects of three light wavelengths (White [350–780 nm], Blue [450 nm], and Green [560 nm]) on broiler production, activity, fear, stress, blood cell profiles, and tibiotarsi (tibia) morphology. Day-of-hatch male broiler chicks (N = 600) were housed in pens (N = 12) with one lighting treatment for 42 days. Body weight and feed consumption were recorded on day (D) 0, 14, 28, and 42, and the feed conversion ratio was calculated. The Tonic Immobility test was used to assess the latency (seconds) to right from the testing cradle (D12 and D33). Blood was drawn for leukocyte and plasma corticosterone concentrations (D21 and D41). Accelerometers were attached at 2 and 5 weeks of age to measure activity. On D41, thermal images of the head were taken to measure surface temperatures (eye and beak), the bursa of Fabricius (bursa) was extracted for relative bursa weight, and the right and left tibias were extracted for tibia morphology. After sampling, the remaining broilers were processed. Activity was greatest in Green light at Week 2 (261.17 ± 8.52 m/s2, p < 0.0001), and activity was lowest in White light at Week 5 (98.99 ± 8.52 m/s2, p < 0.0001). Broilers under Blue light had lower concentrations of lymphocytes (8.62 ± 0.40 × 103 cells/µL, p = 0.01) and T cells (7.16 ± 0.33 × 103 cells/µL, p = 0.008) compared to White light. Breast yields were greatest (26.89 ± 0.13%, p = 0.01) in the White treatments compared to Green and Blue treatments. These results suggest that blue light may negatively impact immune health, while green light increases activity, without decreasing production performance, and white light can improve carcass traits. Therefore, lighting color can be strategically used to target welfare or production goals. Full article

Commercial alumina and silica–alumina catalysts were investigated for propylene (PEN) production via an isopropanol (IPA) dehydration reaction between 200 and 300 °C at an atmospheric pressure and IPA partial pressure of 5136 Pa. The reaction conditions were chosen to fit with the further conversion of PEN into value-added compounds with minimal capital cost, and the conceptual process design was discussed. The textural properties, structure and chemical composition of as-received and hydrothermally treated catalysts were characterised by the adsorption–desorption of N2, X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy. The adsorption microcalorimetry of NH3 and SO2 was used to determine the amount, strength and strength distribution of acid–base sites, while the nature of the acid sites was investigated by Fourier Transform Infraed spectroscopy. Surface area, pore-size distribution and pore volume were not determining factors for the catalytic performances of studied solids in the conditions used here. The best-performing catalyst combined stable textural properties and a high number of high-strength acid sites (Qdiff > 150 kJ/mol NH3) under hydrothermal conditions. The importance of determining the number and strength of acid sites of water-aged catalysts, when considering reactions where water is present as reactive or product, is underlined. Full article

African swine fever (ASF) needs to be controlled, and prevention of the spread of African swine fever virus (ASFV) is dependent on enhanced surveillance and early disease detection. Commercial swine operations, especially in North America, Europe, and Asia, are characterized by comparatively large numbers of pigs, and sampling individual pigs, which represents the main strategy for current ASF surveillance, can be both costly and labor intensive. A study performed in Ghana was designed to estimate the diagnostic sensitivity of pen-based aggregate oral fluid testing for ASFV in infected pigs in a pen of 30 animals and to evaluate its utility as a tool to support surveillance of ASF in the US. This study was performed in three phases: (i) virus (Ghana ASFV24) amplification in a target host species to generate the challenge inoculum; (ii) titration of the inoculum (10% spleen homogenate) in target host species to determine the minimum dose inducing acute ASF in pigs with survival up to 5–6 days post-inoculation (dpi); and (iii) the main study, involving 186 pigs, consisting of 6 replicates of 30 pigs per pen and one seeder pig inoculated with wildtype ASFV (highly virulent genotype II) per pen. Daily sampling of aggregate oral fluids, uncoagulated blood, oropharyngeal swabs, fecal and water nipple swabs, and recording of rectal temperatures and clinical observations was carried out. The seeder pigs were each inoculated intramuscularly with 0.5 mL of the 10% spleen homogenate, which induced the desired clinical course of ASF in the pigs, with survival of up to 6 dpi. ASFV DNA was detected in the seeder pigs as early as 1 dpi and 2 dpi in the blood and oropharyngeal swabs, respectively. Transmission of ASFV from the seeder pigs to the contact pig population was detected via positive amplification of ASFV DNA in aggregate oral fluid samples at 3 days post-contact (dpc) in 4 out of 6 pens, and in all 6 pens, at 4 dpc. Testing of oropharyngeal swabs and blood samples from individual pigs revealed a variable number of ASFV-positive pigs between 3 and 5 dpc, with detection of 100% positivity between 6 and 18 dpc, the study endpoint. These findings demonstrate the potential utility of aggregate oral fluid sampling for sensitive and early detection of ASFV incursion into naïve swine herds. It also demonstrates that testing of environmental samples from the premises could further enhance overall ASF early detection and surveillance strategies. Full article

Background: Percutaneous epidural neuroplasty (PEN) and related adhesiolysis procedures are widely used for managing chronic spinal pain. Although generally safe, complications—ranging from minor to life-threatening—have been reported. This review aimed to estimate the incidence and characteristics of complications following PEN and to evaluate the medical rationale for post-procedural inpatient monitoring. Methods: We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library for studies published from January 2000 to April 2025 reporting complications associated with PEN. We performed a random-effects meta-analysis on five eligible cohort studies to estimate the pooled complication rate and evaluated heterogeneity. Risk of bias was assessed using the Newcastle–Ottawa Scale. Results: Five cohort studies (n = 1740) were included in the meta-analysis, with a pooled complication rate of 9.0% (95% CI: 4.8–13.1%, I2 = 97.5%). A total of 133 complications were identified from cohort studies and case reports. Mechanical and neurological complications were most common. Serious complications, including hematoma, meningitis, and cardiopulmonary arrest, were concentrated within the first 6 h post-procedure. Conclusions: This meta-analysis highlights a quantifiable risk of complications associated with PEN. Our findings support structured inpatient monitoring during the immediate post-procedural period to enhance safety and outcomes. Full article

Foraging behavior in hens is an important indicator of animal welfare. It involves both the search for food and exploration of the environment, which provides necessary enrichment. In addition, it has been inversely linked to damaging behaviors such as severe feather pecking. Conventional studies rely on manual observation to investigate foraging location, duration, timing, and frequency. However, this approach is labor-intensive, time-consuming, and subject to human bias. Our study developed computer vision-based methods to automatically detect foraging hens in a cage-free research environment and compared their performance. A cage-free room was divided into four pens, two larger pens measuring 2.9 m × 2.3 m with 30 hens each and two smaller pens measuring 2.3 m × 1.8 m with 18 hens each. Cameras were positioned vertically, 2.75 m above the floor, recording the videos at 15 frames per second. Out of 4886 images, 70% were used for model training, 20% for validation, and 10% for testing. We trained multiple You Only Look Once (YOLO) object detection models from YOLOv9, YOLOv10, and YOLO11 series for 100 epochs each. All the models achieved precision, recall, and mean average precision at 0.5 intersection over union (mAP@0.5) above 75%. YOLOv9c achieved the highest precision (83.9%), YOLO11x achieved the highest recall (86.7%), and YOLO11m achieved the highest mAP@0.5 (89.5%). These results demonstrate the use of computer vision to automatically detect complex poultry behavior, such as foraging, making it more efficient. Full article
