Some studies have shown that the identities of asexual individuals can be devalued and invalidated through processes of dehumanization. However, research examining dehumanization and attitudes toward asexual parents remains scarce. Drawing on the dual model of dehumanization, this experimental study aimed to investigate the denial of traits associated with human nature (HN; denial of basic human emotions) and human uniqueness (HU; denial of a rational mind), as well as perceptions of parenting competence and warmth attributed to different maternal targets. It was hypothesized that asexual mothers would be judged more negatively on the HN dimension, but not on the HU dimension, compared to allosexual mothers. Furthermore, it was hypothesized that perceived behavior toward children, assessed in terms of warmth, would be associated with the denial of HN (but not HU) for asexual mothers. The study involved 298 participants (Mage = 35.97, SD = 15.04), who read one of three scenarios that were identical except for the sexual orientation of the mother: (1) heterosexual allosexual mother; (2) lesbian allosexual mother; and (3) asexual mother. Participants were then asked to evaluate the target with dehumanization measures and perceived parenting behaviors. Results showed that the asexual mother was perceived more negatively than all other targets across all variables. Moreover, parallel mediation analyses revealed that the perception of a lack of warmth in the asexual mother (compared to the other targets) was mediated by the denial of HN, but not HU. In contrast, both HN and HU were found to mediate judgments of parental competence. These findings provide initial evidence of stigma faced by asexual parents, highlighting the need for further research into the attitudes directed toward them. Full article

Much U.S. research supports the effectiveness of parenting education delivered via the home visiting method. Home visitors are essential to reaching fathers in this context, but not all have favorable attitudes toward father engagement or feel confident working with fathers. Given that father involvement is important for a wide range of child and adolescent outcomes and that fathers benefit from parenting education, it is important to better understand the forces that shape home visitors’ attitudes toward fathers, and thus their subsequent efforts to include them in publicly funded programming. Using survey data from 95 home visitors in Tennessee, this study explores whether home visitors’ beliefs about fathers and attitudes toward father engagement vary as a function of home visitor or agency characteristics. Results suggest training in social work, reporting father-friendly organizational attitudes and behaviors at one’s agency, and reporting supervisor support specifically for father engagement relate to various favorable fathering attitudes. Home visitors’ strategies to engage fathers in home visiting are presented, including strategies for before, during, and after the home visit. Overall, family service agency administrators are in key positions to make decisions that can improve agency father-friendliness, home visitor attitudes toward fathers, and subsequent outcomes for fathers, mothers, and children. This study investigates the complex relationship between levels of religiosity and attitudes toward secularization among individuals receiving higher religious education in Türkiye. Secularization is defined as the diminishing influence of religion in public life and the rise of critical attitudes toward religious norms, a process that accelerated particularly during the modernization period following the establishment of the Republic. The primary aim of the research is to analyze whether there is a significant relationship between secular attitudes and the perceived influence of Islam among theology faculty students. The study employs a quantitative, descriptive survey design and includes a sample of 380 undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students from the faculties of theology at Kocaeli, Sakarya, Marmara, and Istanbul universities. Data were collected using the “Perceived Influence of Religion Scale” and the “Secular Attitude Scale,” both of which demonstrated acceptable reliability (Cronbach’s Alpha = 0.70). Demographic variables such as age, gender, marital status, parental education level, type of education (formal or distance), and economic status were also incorporated into the analysis. The findings revealed statistically significant differences based on marital status, parental education level, type of education program, and previous educational background. For instance, single students reported perceiving a higher influence of religion compared to their married counterparts, while students with fathers who held university degrees perceived a lower influence of religion. These results offer valuable insights into how modern social transformations influence religious attitudes and practices. Full article

Background: Motor performance in childhood predicts physical fitness, cognitive capacity, socio-emotional development, and academic success. Parenting styles are especially important to such performance in the preschool period, as children’s gross motor abilities are shaped in part by their interactions with parents. Young children’s physical activity is also declining as they spend more time on screens. Methods: This quantitative survey-based study examined the relationships among 252 preschoolers’ gross motor skills, their tendency to become addicted to digital games, and their parents’ parenting styles. Results: The sampled preschoolers’ gross motor skill development and game addiction tendencies were both low, while the participating parents reported high levels of democratic and overprotective parenting attitudes, low levels of authoritarian ones, and moderate levels of permissive ones. Motor skills were not associated with children’s addiction tendency or parents’ democratic (also known as authoritative), authoritarian, or permissive styles. However, overprotective parenting was positively and significantly associated with gross motor skill scores. While no significant relationship was found between children’s digital game addiction tendencies and their parents’ adoption of a democratic parenting style, such tendencies were positively and statistically correlated with the authoritarian and permissive parenting styles. One dimension of such tendencies, constant gameplay, was also positively and significantly correlated with overprotective parenting. Conclusions: Although the participating children’s digital game addiction tendencies were low, the findings indicate that parents and carers should guide children to reduce their screen time and promote increased interaction with their surroundings and other people to mitigate screen time’s known negative effects on gross motor coordination. Parental Attitudes to Risky Play and Children’s Independent Mobility: Public Health Implications for Children in Ireland

Background: Understanding the determinants of children’s outdoor play is an important element for child development and broader public health outcomes. There is growing evidence that children’s opportunities for play, particularly outdoor risky play, are diminishing. Parents are concerned with keeping their child safe while affording them independence to play. This study explored parents’ attitudes to risky play and practices around children’s independent mobility in Ireland with the aim of informing public health strategies promoting healthy childhood environments. Methods: An online survey comprising validated scales and standardised questions was completed by a nationally represented sample of 376 parents of children up to 16 years. Data was analysed via descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and regression analysis. Results: A total of 376 participants accessed the survey, of which 349 completed it. A total of 84% of participants were female. A total of 74% agreed that children need regular exposure to actual risk to develop risk management skills, and 71% trusted their children to play safely. Chi-square tests reveal significant associations between outdoor play in the rain and school travel (p < 0.01), and appropriate age to begin activities at home and in educational settings (p < 0.05). A moderate association was found between the method of school travel and children’s permission to play in the rain (Cramer’s V = 0.51). Respondents considered supervision to be a necessity to ensure their children’s safety. Overall, the results indicate that parents were risk-averse in three of the six categories of risky play, namely, play near dangerous elements, play with adult tools, and out-of-sight play. Conclusions: This study presents a descriptive analysis of findings from the Ireland State of Play Survey. Findings indicate that although parents recognise the benefits of risky play, there is some contradiction between parental attitudes and actual practices, with a lack of willingness or confidence in permitting their children to participate in all such activities. Internet addiction among adolescents has emerged as a significant global health issue, contributing to social isolation, academic difficulties, and emotional disorders, with excessive use of social networks further intensifying these challenges. This study evaluated the effectiveness of an educational intervention grounded in the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) in reducing Internet addiction and enhancing academic performance among adolescent girls in southern Iran. A randomized controlled trial was conducted with 370 female students aged 15–16 years, selected through two-stage cluster random sampling and divided equally into intervention and control groups. The intervention group participated in a five-week TPB-based program, incorporating lectures, group discussions, and parent–teacher meetings, while the control group received unrelated health education. Data were collected using the Yang Internet Addiction Test (IAT), a TPB-based questionnaire, and academic performance scores (grade point average, GPA) before and after the intervention. A repeated measures ANOVA revealed significant improvements in attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, and intentions to reduce Internet use (p < 0.001). Internet addiction scores significantly declined, and GPA improved in the intervention group compared to the control group (p < 0.001, Cohen’s d = 0.950). The findings support TPB-based interventions as effective tools for reducing Internet addiction and improving academic outcomes among adolescents. This study was registered with the Iranian Registry of Clinical Trials (IRCT20131014015015N18). Full article

The growing number of lesbian and gay (LG) parent families in Israel, along with the increasing involvement of nurses in Mother-Child Health Clinics (MCHCs) in supporting them, served as the impetus for this study. The study aimed to examine (1) MCHC nurses’ knowledge of homosexuality and attitudes toward LG parenting; (2) the association between their knowledge and attitudes; and (3) their association with socio-demographic, professional, and LG-related characteristics. Findings from 65 MCHC nurses revealed moderate levels of knowledge about homosexuality, low levels of negative attitudes, and moderate levels of positive attitudes toward LG parenting. Nurses who were Jewish, secular, or living in a city had greater knowledge about homosexuality and fewer negative beliefs about LG parenting. Acquaintance with LG individuals was associated with fewer negative beliefs about LG parenting. Greater knowledge about homosexuality correlated with fewer negative beliefs and more positive perceptions of LG parenting, suggesting that enhanced knowledge fosters more positive attitudes toward LG parenting. The findings emphasize the need for tailored, knowledge-based training in nursing education for MCHC settings, considering nurses’ diverse cultural backgrounds, level of religiosity, and familiarity with LG individuals. Incorporating content on homosexuality and LG parenting may promote more inclusive and supportive care practices. Full article

Background/Objectives: Asthma is a prevalent chronic condition affecting approximately 300 million people globally. Despite advancements in treatment protocols, poor adherence to asthma medication remains a significant issue, often leading to severe complications, especially in children. This study aimed to identify factors influencing medication adherence among parents of children with asthma, using constructs from the theory of planned behaviour to better understand and improve adherence. Methods: This cross-sectional study employed a survey incorporating constructs from the theory of planned behaviour, demographic variables, and other adherence-related factors. Descriptive statistics and logistic regression analyses were applied to explore the relationship between these factors and adherence to asthma medications. Results: Out of 152 parents who visited the survey link, 150 were eligible. The average age was 35.58 ± 9.913 years; most participants were married (82%) and female (62.6%). Multivariate linear regression analysis of the parents’ factor showed parental attitude (β = 0.38, p < 0.001) and subjective norms (β = 0.34, p < 0.002) were significantly associated with parents’ intention to adhere to asthma medications. Conclusion: The study found that parental attitudes and subjective norms significantly impact the intention to adhere to asthma medication. Improving adherence is crucial for effective disease management, reducing healthcare costs, and enhancing the quality of life for children and their families. Interventions should focus on educating parents about the importance of adherence and engaging more family members to positively influence adherence through strengthened subjective norms. Recent research in the area of physical literacy has revealed that the early years are a period that has not been well studied. Our research team designed a deductive review with the aim of investigating how preschool children’s physical literacy manifests across affective, physical, cognitive and social domains. The review includes scientific publications from the last four years, which investigate the elements of physical literacy in preschool children: motivation, confidence, motor competence, knowledge, understanding and use of physical activity. The characteristics of the elements were systematised into four domains, affective, physical, cognitive and social, as engagement in physical activities. Results. The majority of the articles explained physical literacy behaviours in 4- to 5-year-old children. The physical domain was most frequently described, mainly including the three basic motor skills of postural stability, object control, and locomotion, as well as physical qualities of movement. The second most frequently described domain was the social domain of the application of physical activities in preschool stages, including the types and amounts of physical activity used in both organised and leisure time. Conclusions. Physical literacy of preschool children is a purposefully organised and guided process, during which a child is given the opportunity to try and apply age-appropriate movement skills, without being limited by the child’s gender, parental attitudes, sporting choices, or the traditions of sport culture. Entrepreneurship development strategies are crucial for translating academic potential into economic and societal value. To achieve this, educational institutions must understand the factors influencing students’ entrepreneurial intentions. While research on academic entrepreneurship exists, comparative studies that explore these factors across different national contexts are scarce. This study addresses this gap through a comparative analysis of student entrepreneurship in Bulgaria, Malta, and Turkey, investigating key factors, such as attitudes toward entrepreneurship (ATE), the role of entrepreneurship education (EEdu), and entrepreneurial inspirations. Based on 415 survey responses collected between April and June 2024, hypothesized relationships were tested using appropriate bivariate statistical analyses. The results indicate that a positive evaluation of running one’s own business significantly increases entrepreneurial intentions, particularly when the business is perceived as safe, realistic, pleasant, and strong. The university’s role is pivotal: students largely relied on institutional support for their business initiatives; showed a strong preference for practical, hands-on educational methods; and identified a lack of entrepreneurship education as a key obstacle. A family background with entrepreneurial parents also positively influenced students’ preference for running their own businesses. Interestingly, the findings challenge a simple dichotomy between employment and entrepreneurship. A preference for full-time employment did not diminish entrepreneurial intentions, suggesting students may view these career paths as complementary or sequential. Conversely, preferences for part-time or self-employment did not have a significant positive impact on entrepreneurial initiatives. These findings underscore the need for universities to provide tailored, practical support and to recognize the complex and non-linear career trajectories envisioned by modern students. Full article

Drawing on data from a three-year longitudinal study of 56 Chinese–Canadian families with early elementary school-aged children, this study explores Chinese immigrant parents’ lived-through emotional experiences of heritage language maintenance (HLM). Informed by Vygotsky’s concept of perezhivanie, thematic analysis of annual interview data reveals the mixed and refracted nature of parental emotions involved in Chinese language preservation and bilingual child-rearing. These emotional experiences were profoundly shaped by the intersection of environmental, personal, and situational factors and were deeply entangled with parents’ perceptions of and attitudes toward their children’s heritage language learning and use at home. The emotional work involved significantly influenced the parents’ language and literacy planning and HLM practices. By foregrounding the emotional dimensions of heritage language education, this study offers important implications for educational stakeholders seeking to support immigrant parents both emotionally and practically in raising bilingual children in the host country. Background: The World Health Organization defines myopia as a global epidemic. Its growing prevalence and the increasingly early age onset all raise a major concern for public health due to the elevated risk of loss and deterioration of visual function as a result of myopia-related ocular pathological complications. However, it remains unclear whether the vision-related quality of life of patients with myopia is the same as in healthy individuals. The aim of the present study is to assess the quality of life in children and adolescents with myopia between the ages of 8 and 16 years, who underwent observation at USBOBAL-Varna. Methods: This study prospectively included 190 patients with myopia between −1.00 and −5.50 D, corrected with different optical aids. After a thorough physical ocular examination and inquiry into the best visual acuity with and without distance correction, specially designed questionnaires were completed by the patients and their parents/guardians for the purpose of the study. The data from the questionnaires was statistically processed. The mean age of the patients in the study was 11.65 years, 101 were female and 89 were male. Of these, 83 wore monofocal glasses, 50 were monofocal and 47 were multifocal contact lenses, and 10 wore ortho-K lenses. Results: No significant difference in best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was found among the three types of optical correction (p-value > 0.05). Cronbach’s alpha of the questionnaire for all 10 factors was higher than 0.6, indicating acceptable internal consistency. Significantly higher scores were reported for overall, near, and distance vision, symptoms, appearance, attitude, activities and hobbies, handling, and perception for soft contact lens wearers than for spectacle wearers (p-value < 0.05). Ortho-K wearers performed better than spectacle wearers in all aspects except for pronounced symptoms (p = 0.74). No significant difference was found between ortho-K wearers and soft contact lens wearers for any factor (p > 0.05). Conclusions: Patients wearing spectacles and with myopia above −5.00 D had the highest anxiety scores and lower quality of life among all myopic participants. The research on the quality of life in children with myopia with different refractive errors and optical correction devices is crucial for improving corrective devices and meeting the needs of patients. Background: Mental health issues among youth are a growing public health concern. Schools play a vital role in the early detection and prevention of mental health issues, with principals being central to the implementation of mental health initiatives. This study assessed the attitudes, preparedness, and practices of school principals regarding mental health promotion and prevention among school-aged children. Methods: A cross-sectional survey using computer-assisted web interviewing (CAWI) was conducted between March and April 2025. A 19-item questionnaire was sent to all 1564 primary and secondary school principals in the Lodz region. Data from 605 respondents (response rate: 38.7%) were analyzed. Results: A total of 94.9% of the principals reported an increase in student mental health problems over the past five years. Over one-quarter of school principals (26.3%) declared a very good or rather good level of preparation for teachers to work with students diagnosed with a mental disorder. Moreover, 42.3% declared a very good or rather good level of preparation of teachers for conversations with parents about mental health problems observed in their children. Mental health education was conducted in 94.7% of schools, and teacher training in 73.2% of schools. Secondary schools more often offered such training (81.9% vs. 70.7%; p = 0.01) and reported stronger support from specialist teachers (79.7% vs. 67.7%; p = 0.01) than primary schools did. Rural schools rated teacher-parent communication more positively (47.0% vs. 37.7%; p = 0.02) despite fewer training initiatives (68.7% vs. 77.7%; p = 0.01). Suicide response procedures were implemented in 78.5% of schools. Conclusions: The findings confirm a marked rise in student mental health needs and reveal structural disparities in providing school-based support. Enhancing school leadership, expanding teacher training, and ensuring systemic support may facilitate mental health promotion interventions in schools. Full article

Inclusion is among the greatest challenges worldwide for educational systems. The present study examines the attitudes towards inclusion of parents of neurotypical children attending inclusive mainstream primary schools in Cyprus and Greece. Moreover, it addresses potential links between parental inclusion attitudes and different aspects of inclusive education, such as accommodation of different special educational needs (SENs), willingness to establish contact with children with SENs and their families, and knowledge of the strengths and difficulties of children with SENs. The participants were 202 parents from Cyprus and 166 parents from Greece who filled in a 74-item questionnaire. The results indicated that both Greek and Cypriot parents held good knowledge of the characteristics of children with SENs and positive attitudes towards the inclusion of children with SENs. Both groups of parents believed that certain disability categories can be more easily accommodated in mainstream schools. Parental beliefs towards inclusion were found to moderately predict attitudes towards the accommodation of SENs, willingness to develop and maintain social contact with the families of children with SENs, and ability attribution to children with SENs. This study suggests the importance of taking into account parental factors to improve attitudes and behaviors towards inclusion. Full article

Predictors of Transphobia and Attitudes Toward Transgender Individuals Among Nurses in Türkiye: A Cross-Sectional Study

Background/Objectives: Transgender individuals face significant healthcare disparities, often exacerbated by provider prejudice and knowledge gaps. Nurses, as frontline providers, play a critical role in promoting inclusive care. This study aimed to evaluate the levels and predictors of transphobia and attitudes toward transgender individuals among nurses in Türkiye. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 100 registered nurses. Participants completed the Transphobia Scale, the Attitudes Toward Transgender Individuals Scale, and the Hudson & Ricketts Homophobia Scale. Additional measures included perceived knowledge, prior education on transgender health, familial attitudes, and comfort levels when working with transgender patients. Multiple linear regression analyses identified predictors of transphobia and attitudes. Results: The mean Transphobia Scale score was 41.53 (SD = 12.67), and the mean Attitudes Toward Transgender Individuals Scale score was 57.45 (SD = 16.42). Greater homophobia, negative parental attitudes, and higher perceived knowledge significantly predicted higher transphobia scores (Adjusted R2= 0.327). Prior education on transgender health was also associated with lower transphobia. Lower comfort with transgender patients was marginally associated with higher transphobia. More positive attitudes toward transgender individuals were predicted by lower transphobia, lower homophobia, and prior education (Adjusted R2 = 0.526). Conclusions: Findings underscore the urgent need for structured transgender health education and culturally sensitive interventions among nurses. Addressing sociocultural factors and training gaps could enhance equitable healthcare delivery for transgender populations, particularly in culturally conservative settings like Türkiye. Full article
