The Home Literacy Environment (HLE) plays a key role in children’s literacy development. While previous research has mainly focused on the quantity of literacy activities, the role of the quality of parent–child interactions within the HLE in children’s literacy development has been relatively understudied. Using a sample of N = 500 preschoolers (Mage = 60.97; SDage = 4.61; 51% girls; 38% migration background) in Germany, this study examines the quantity and quality of the early HLE: their (1) interrelation, (2) contributions to emergent literacy skills in preschool, and (3) long-term effects on literacy outcomes by the end of Grade 2, controlling for child and family characteristics. Results from a manifest structural equation model indicate that the quantitative informal and formal HLE, as well as the quality of the HLE, were partly positively associated with children’s literacy skills (vocabulary, phonological awareness, and letter knowledge) in the penultimate year of preschool (T1) and a year later (T2). Only the quantitative formal HLE predicted spelling skills at the end of Grade 2 (T3). These findings suggest that the early HLE is mainly associated with emergent literacy skills during preschool. Sustained quantitative and qualitative literacy support throughout primary school may be necessary for long-term literacy success. Full article

Adolescent sexual assault survivors have myriad post-assault needs. However, if and how they access resources to attend to those needs can be complicated due to their legal status as minors and child abuse mandatory reporting policies. Such policies that require specific entities to be notified when a sexual assault involving a minor has occurred might deter adolescents from seeking post-assault care. However, no studies to date have examined how mandatory reporting laws inform adolescents’ post-assault decisions and experiences. Through semi-structured qualitative interviews with twenty-one survivors of adolescent sexual assault in one Northeastern US state, we found that mandatory reporting actively deterred sixteen survivors from seeking formal help; would have deterred two survivors from seeking formal help had they known about it; and was a nonissue for three survivors who chose to seek formal help in an attempt to have very specific needs met. Survivors of adolescent sexual assault had serious concerns about losing agency and control and about unwanted involvement from police, parents, and child protective services. Individual providers, organizations, and whole communities must seriously consider the potential harm of mandatory reporting policies and think creatively and collaboratively alongside adolescent survivors to ensure they can access the care they need and deserve. Family-implemented interventions are evidence-based practices used to support a range of developmental outcomes, including social communication. Social communication is a broad construct that encompasses a variety of skills, from foundational abilities such as joint attention (i.e., two people attending to the same object or event) to more advanced behaviors like triadic interactions (i.e., responding to or initiating conversation that involves reciprocal interactions). In a previous study, we examined the effects of a brief, parent-implemented Naturalistic Developmental Behavioral Intervention (NDBI), delivered over telepractice with video feedback coaching. The intervention resulted in increased strategy use by all mothers and the frequency of communication for three young children. In the current study, we conducted a secondary analysis of those data to explore whether the communication-focused intervention produced a collateral effect on activity-engaged triadic interactions (i.e., mother–child–mother or child–mother–child exchanges while simultaneously engaging in a joint activity). Although a functional relation was not established, critical theoretical implications are posed. These findings highlight the need for future research to break apart complex skills into subskills to detect any subtle changes in child outcomes. Limitations and directions for future research are discussed. Full article

Background: A childhood burn presents new and unfamiliar challenges to patients and their parents during recovery. These injuries can negatively impact activities such as independence in self-care, participation in physical activity, and social interaction. As such, pediatric burn patients are at risk of poorer quality of life (QoL) outcomes after their burn. In this longitudinal, observational cohort study, we examined the social, demographic, and clinical factors that were associated with a poor QoL at 12 months postburn for pediatric patients aged > 2 years with non-severe burns in Western Australia. Methods: Inpatients were recruited from the pediatric burn unit at Perth Children’s Hospital in Western Australia between February 2021 and September 2022. Demographic and family information (age, sex, postcode, parental education, languages spoken at home) and clinical data (burn cause, TBSA%, location, surgical interventions, length of stay) were collected at baseline. At 6 and 12 months, caregivers completed the Brisbane Burn Scar Impact Profile (BBSIP). Results: A total of 37 caregivers completed the Brisbane Burn Scar Impact Profile (BBSIP). For the child’s QoL, 57% of caregivers reported that some impact remained for overall QoL, 32% for sensory intensity, 46% for sensitivity, 22% for daily living (22%), and 19% for emotional reactions. Parent worry was impacted in 46% of caregivers. Being female was associated with greater long-term impacts, particularly in overall functioning and parental worry. The burn location also influenced outcomes, with injuries to the upper limbs linked to higher sensory intensity and emotional impact. Children from culturally and linguistically diverse (CaLD) backgrounds, indicated by those speaking a language other than English at home (LOTE), demonstrated significantly greater effects across several domains, including overall impact, daily living, appearance, and parent worry. Conclusions: A substantial proportion of children continued to experience impacts from non-severe burns across multiple domains, indicating that even small-area burns can have lasting effects. The factors associated with worse scores were the child being female, the families being linguistically diverse, and upper body burns. Full article

Social–emotional development in early childhood lays the groundwork for school readiness, healthy relationships, and long-term well-being. Parents play a pivotal role in this process, shaping children’s emotional awareness, regulation, and social competence through everyday interactions. This literature review synthesizes evidence from 74 peer-reviewed studies to evaluate nine evidence-based parenting interventions targeting parents of preschool-aged children. The programs were analyzed with respect to their objectives, theoretical foundations, components, and the resulting outcomes for both parents and children. Across interventions, consistent benefits emerged in children, including improved emotion recognition, regulation, empathy, and prosocial behavior, as well as reductions in internalizing problems. Parents also gained in confidence and positive discipline practices. Key elements linked to effectiveness included active parent skill-building (such as modeling, role play, and guided practice), structured parent–child interactions, multi-component designs integrating home and school contexts, and flexible delivery formats that adapt to family needs. These findings underscore the critical role of parenting interventions as an evidence-based method to enhance preschoolers’ social–emotional development. Full article

Objectives: The aim of the present study was to adapt the Sharenting Evaluation Scale to Turkish and to test its reliability and validity. Methods: Through an online data collection platform, we recruited 391 parents (Mage = 42.2, SDage = 5.6, 76% female). They have at least one child under 18 years of age and actively engage with social media. Sharenting Evaluation Scale consists of 17 items rated on a 6-point Likert scale. Its Turkish adaptation underwent a two-phase process: exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, along with testing for construct validity. Results: The exploratory factor analysis revealed that the 17 items in the questionnaire were loaded onto two factors (Social Behavior and Implications). The confirmatory factor analysis indicated that the two-factor model fitted the current sample well. To evaluate the construct validity of the Sharenting Evaluation Scale, we compared groups at the extreme ends of the scoring spectrum. A t-test was conducted to compare the scores of both groups across subscales, revealing a significant difference. We observed positive correlations between sharenting and parental self-regulation, authoritative parenting, permissive parenting, and digital media literacy which indicate the criterion validity. Conclusions: In conclusion, the current study demonstrates that the Turkish version of the Sharenting Evaluation Scale is a reliable and valid tool. Full article

This study examines a seven-week informal familycentric rocketry pilot program designed for Latina girls in grades 5 and 6 and their parents. Grounded in Community Cultural Wealth and Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy, the program integrated Family Problem-Based Learning to position families as co-educators in science learning. Through activities such as designing NASA-style mission patches, constructing egg-drop devices, and launching rockets, the program sought to center family knowledge, bilingual practices, and cultural values within physical science experiences. Data reported here were collected through mid- and post-program surveys with both parents and daughters. Responses indicate strong engagement from families, with parents reporting increased high confidence in supporting their daughters’ science learning and daughters expressing enjoyment and strong interest in science learning. Both groups valued the use of English and Spanish and the program’s emphasis on collaborative, family-centered participation. Responses highlight the potential of culturally sustaining, familycentric approaches to address the underrepresentation of Latina women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) by fostering a sense of belonging. This study contributes to informal science education by demonstrating how families can be centered in a program focused on physical science. School-based outreach of this kind may also strengthen families and parent–child relationships. Full article

Introduction: Parents of children presenting global developmental delay (GDD) need to be involved in their therapy to intensify treatment. Vojta therapy (VT) is an intensive physiotherapeutic treatment that can be administered at home. Whilst parental experience of Home-Based Program (HBP) for preterm or cerebral palsy is well documented, there is a lack of understanding about parents of GDD children on HBP with VT. Objectives: The aim of this work was to describe parents’ perspectives concerning their participation in, concerns with, and perception of the results of an HBP with VT. Methods: A qualitative case design based on an interpretative approach was presented. A purposeful sampling was used. Data was collected in two stages: firstly, semi-structured interviews, and secondly, photo-elicitation. An inductive thematic analysis was used. Results: Seventeen parents were included. Three themes emerged from parents’ perspectives. Firstly, parents’ active participation in VT, which includes their desire to become an active agent to contribute to their child’s improvement, their implication of compromise, learning process, time required, effort, and factors that influence their adherence and continuity. Secondly, parents’ perception of the results achieved: motor improvement and better resting, feeding, and breathing; and time and commitment required to achieve them. Thirdly, parents’ initial concerns about suitability, daily implementation, therapy functioning, or evidence, as well as concerns about emotional bonds. Conclusions: Parents universally perceive that their commitment and efforts were rewarded. They recognized that the emotional bond with their child was strengthened by the therapy. The results regarding the beneficial effects perceived by the parents should be treated with caution, as no instruments for assessing the effect or efficacy were used in this study. Full article

Background/Objectives: Mothers expecting a second child experience the parenting of multiple children for the first time, differing from first-time motherhood. This highlights the need for childbirth preparation education tailored to families expecting a second child. Parental self-efficacy influences maternal mental health, child development, and parent–child interactions. This non-randomized pilot exploratory study aimed to examine the association between childbirth preparation education for families expecting a second child and maternal parental self-efficacy at 1-month postpartum, focusing on a family-based, single-session program actively involving firstborn children. Methods: The intervention group (n = 18) received childbirth preparation education during pregnancy and completed questionnaires and semi-structured interviews at 1-month postpartum. The control group (n = 34) completed questionnaires only at 1-month postpartum. Questionnaires included the Parenting Sense of Competence Scale, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, Maternal Attachment Inventory, Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, and demographic information. Semi-structured interviews explored participants’ experiences and feelings after attending the childbirth preparation class. Results: Compared to the control group, the intervention group had higher Parenting Sense of Competence Scale scores; mothers in the intervention group reported smoother family-wide adaptation to life with a second child, greater confidence in child-rearing, recognition of the firstborn’s growth into an older sibling, and effective use of hands-on experiences from the class. Conclusions: Childbirth preparation education for families expecting a second child may be associated with higher maternal parental self-efficacy at 1-month postpartum. This association may reflect collective family preparation and adjustment supporting adaptation to life with a second child. Full article

Background: Childhood obesity is a persistent global health challenge, often rooted in early-life dietary patterns shaped within the home environment. Objective: To investigate the association between parents’ culinary skills, children’s eating behavior, and the degree of child involvement in family culinary practices. Methods: A cross-sectional, analytical study. In the public and private schools in southern Brazil. A total of 205 families with children aged 3 to 13 years participated. Parents or caregivers answered a structured questionnaire on culinary skills and sociodemographic variables. Children’s eating behavior was assessed through the validated Brazilian version of the Children’s Eating Behaviour Questionnaire (CEBQ). Student’s T test was used to compare means, and Pearson’s chi-square or Fisher’s exact test to compare proportions. Multivariate linear regression was applied to control for potential confounders. Analyses were conducted using SPSS version 27.0 and R software. Results: Most parents (90.7%) reported cooking regularly, and 65.9% involved children in cooking activities. The predominant culinary profile (40%) was classified as “convenience cooking,” marked by frequent use of processed ingredients. Healthier parental cooking practices were positively associated with adaptive eating behaviors in children, reflected by lower food fussiness, satiety responsiveness, food responsiveness and food refusal scores and higher enjoyment of food scores domains of the CEBQ. Conclusions: Despite the high prevalence of routine cooking, convenience-oriented practices remain dominant, reflecting broader sociocultural patterns. Engagement in healthier cooking practices was positively associated with more favorable eating behaviors in children. These findings underscore the importance of promoting culinary education and parental involvement in cooking as strategies to support healthy childhood eating behaviors. Full article

Mothers’ behavior strongly influences children’s eating habits, with family attitudes and feeding practices playing a key role in dietary development. In accordance with the previous literature, this study examined these aspects, including also mothers’ use of social media to stay informed about nutrition as an innovative element. The main goal was to validate the Italian version of the PSEPAD scale (Parental Self-Efficacy for Promoting Healthy Physical Activity and Dietary Behaviors in Children), which is a valid and reliable tool for assessing parental self-efficacy in encouraging healthy lifestyles in children, through exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The sample was composed of 217 mothers. Results were interpreted through groups comparisons (chi-square, ANOVA, and t-test). The findings confirmed the central role of mothers in managing children’s diets and using strategies against picky eating behaviors. The study also highlighted the growing use of social media among mothers, especially younger ones, as a source of nutritional information, meal planning, and peer support, despite a generally low level of satisfaction with the content available on pediatric nutrition. Finally, the results showed a positive link between maternal self-efficacy and healthier child behaviors: mothers with higher self-esteem and confidence were more effective in promoting healthy habits. These findings underscore the importance of targeted interventions to strengthen maternal self-efficacy and the development of digital tools to support healthy family lifestyles. Full article

Background/Objectives: Introducing a demanding home-based program (HBP) of Vojta therapy (VT) into their daily activities is a life-altering event for parents of children with global developmental delay (GDD). This study aims to document the experiences of parents of children with GDD administering a HBP of VT. Methods: A multicentre study with a qualitative case design based on an interpretative approach is presented. Interviews were conducted with 10 parents using photo-elicitation (PE). Inductive and thematic analyses were used. Results: Four common experiential themes were identified. Firstly, crying was identified as the most significant barrier to administering therapy (despite parents accepting that crying was not pain-related). Secondly, parents described the intense and variable emotional impact of being responsible for the therapy and its effects on their child. Thirdly, parents unanimously felt that their involvement was worthwhile, with the developmental results they perceived outweighing the emotional, physical and time demands of administering the VT. Finally, parents developed a narrative of hope stemming from the therapy and its observed effects. Conclusions: The physical, emotional and time demands on parents when administering a HBP of VT are very significant. The main barriers to adherence to the program are identified as the child’s crying during therapy and time management. Intense emotional experiences, both positive and negative, arise while administering a HBP of VT. Parents are not only able to overcome all emotional and logistical challenges when they recognize improvements in their child, but they also begin to hope for further improvement. Implications for the professional design of HBPs of VT include the following: advanced warning that crying is normal, part of the therapy and not pain-related; training and ongoing support from a qualified therapist; training in recognising developmental improvement; and psychological support to deal with the emotional journey. Parental play support is crucial to children’s playfulness. Using a person-centered approach, we identified profiles of parental play support based on self-assessed roles. In total, 447 mothers and fathers reported their roles—co-player, playleader, director, uninvolved, or onlooker—during their child’s play. These roles were assessed at two time points, spaced two years apart. Latent profile analysis revealed three distinct profiles: (1) engaged play support, (2) versatile play support, and (3) non-interfering play support. Parental affiliation to one of the three profiles was very stable over time, with only 14% of parents transitioning between profiles. Our longitudinal analysis indicated that the engaged play support profile, in which parents are closely involved in their child’s play either by playing with the child or observing children’s play, was significantly related to children’s playfulness two years later. Notably, 28.4% of parents fell into this profile. These findings underscore the importance of active parental engagement in fostering children’s playfulness. Full article

Association of Diet Quality with Depression, Anxiety, and Comorbidity Symptoms in Chinese School-Aged Children

Background: Depression and anxiety are prevalent mental health disorders among children and adolescents, with diet quality emerging as a modifiable risk factor. However, evidence regarding the association between comprehensive diet quality and mental health in school-aged children remains limited. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 400 Chinese children aged 8–12 years. Diet quality was assessed using the low-burden Diet Quality Questionnaire (DQQ), from which three Global Diet Recommendations (GDRs) scores were derived: GDR-Healthy, GDR-Limit, and total GDR. Depression and anxiety symptoms were evaluated using the Children’s Depression Inventory (CDI) and the Social Anxiety Scale for Children (SASC), respectively. Log-binomial regression models were used to estimate risk ratios (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the associations between GDR scores and mental health symptoms (depression, anxiety, comorbidity). Subgroup analyses stratified by age and sex were conducted to explore heterogeneity. Results: Higher total GDR scores were associated with lower risks of depressive symptoms (RR = 0.90, 95% CI: 0.84–0.96), anxiety symptoms (RR = 0.93, 95% CI: 0.88–0.99), and their comorbidity (RR = 0.88, 95% CI: 0.79–0.97) after adjustment for age, sex, zBMI, physical activity, region of residence, only-child status and parental education. The GDR-Healthy score was independently associated with lower risks of depression symptoms (RR = 0.89, 95% CI: 0.83–0.96) and comorbidity (RR = 0.87, 95% CI: 0.79–0.95), while no significant associations between GDR-Limit score and mental health disorders were observed. Subgroup analyses indicated that the association was consistent across sex and age subgroups. Conclusions: Better diet quality and particularly higher intake of health-protective foods is associated with lower risks of depression, anxiety, and their comorbidity symptoms in Chinese school-aged children in this cross-sectional study. These findings support the integration of diet quality monitoring and nutritional interventions into public health strategies to promote mental health in children. Full article

Background/Objectives: Physical inactivity is associated with increased cardiometabolic disease risk and poor cognition in children and their parents. Family-based physical activity offers an opportunity for children and their parents to engage in physical activity concurrently. The present study examined the effect of an acute bout of family-based tag rugby on risk factors for cardiometabolic disease and cognition in families. Additionally, this study qualitatively explored families’ perceptions of enjoyment and factors affecting implementation with considerations for socioeconomic status. Methods: Sixteen families (27 children, 20 parents) participated in an exercise (45 min family-based tag rugby) and resting control trial (45 min seated rest), separated by seven days. Postprandial gylcaemia, insulinaemia, lipaemia and cognitive function were measured following exercise/rest. Families also participated in whole-family focus groups and separate parent and child interviews. Results: In parents, postprandial plasma insulin concentrations were lower on the exercise trial than the rested control trial at 30 min (p = 0.004) and 120 min following the consumption of a standardised lunch (p = 0.011). In children, a significant trial*time interaction for inverse efficiency scores on the Sternberg paradigm (three-item) was exhibited (p = 0.016). In parents, a significant trial*time interaction for inverse efficiency score on the Stroop congruent test was exhibited (trial*time interaction; p = 0.012), whereby inverse efficiency scores improved immediately post-exercise, compared with the rested control trial (p = 0.016). Qualitatively, families from all socioeconomic backgrounds agreed that tag rugby is an inclusive, enjoyable mode of physical activity that families want to participate in together, which can be adapted to overcome the barriers associated with the cost of and access to local facilities. Conclusions: An acute bout of tag rugby improved postprandial insulin concentrations in parents and cognitive function in children and their parents. Tag rugby was deemed an appropriate exercise modality for families from a range of socioeconomic backgrounds. Full article
