Background: The surge in COVID-19 cases during the pandemic created a disease burden. An epidemiological study on COVID-19 is required as not much is known about the impact of containment and mitigation on health. We aimed to compare the epidemiological features during the years of the COVID-19 pandemic in the Vidarbha region in Maharashtra, India, to understand the epidemiology changes throughout the pandemic’s progression. Method: All of the cases reported at our testing centers in Nagpur and its periphery during the three years of the pandemic (i.e., from February 2020 to December 2022) were included. Descriptive analyses of variables of interest and statistical measures were compared. Results: There were 537,320 tests recorded during the study period. Of these, 13,035 (13.29%), 42,909 (13.70%), and 19,936 (15.91%) tested positive in 2020, 2021, and 2022, respectively. Hospitalization decreased from 2020 to 2022. An age group shift from 45 to 16–30 years over the pandemic was noticed. Seasonally, positivity peaked in September (27.04%) in 2020, in April (43.4%) in 2021, and in January in 2022 (35.30%). The estimated case fatality ratio was highest in 2021 (36.68%) over the three years in the hospital setting. Conclusion: Understanding the changing epidemiology of SARS-CoV-2 strengthens our perceptive of this disease, which will aid in improving the healthcare system in terms of both controlling and preventing the spread of COVID-19. Nasal irrigation (NI) is an effective, safe, low-cost strategy for treating and preventing upper respiratory tract diseases. High-volume, low-pressure saline irrigations are the most efficient method for removing infectious agents, allergens, and inflammatory mediators. This article reviews clinical evidence supporting NI use in various conditions: nasal congestion in infants, recurrent respiratory infections, acute and chronic rhinosinusitis, allergic and gestational rhinitis, empty nose syndrome, and post-endoscopic sinus surgery care. NI improves symptoms, reduces recurrence, enhances the efficacy of topical drugs, and decreases the need for antibiotics and decongestants. During the COVID-19 pandemic, NI has also been explored as a complementary measure to reduce viral load. Due to the safe profile and mechanical cleansing action on inflammatory mucus, nasal irrigations represent a valuable adjunctive treatment across a wide range of sinonasal conditions. Full article

Background and Objectives: Preterm birth and stillbirth are primary adverse pregnancy outcomes. Research during the COVID-19 pandemic revealed reductions in preterm birth in some countries, while stillbirth rates increased or remained unchanged. These findings suggest the presence of preventable risk factors associated with changes in physical activity and lower exposure to community-acquired infections due to lockdown measures, altered social interaction patterns or reduced access to antenatal care. Assessing seasonal variation may offer insights into whether lifestyle changes during the COVID-19 lockdown period influenced preterm birth rates. Materials and Methods: This retrospective cohort study used data from the electronic medical records of Bihor and Sibiu counties. Preterm deliveries (<37 weeks) and stillbirths during the COVID-19 pandemic (2020 and 2021) were compared with the corresponding pre-pandemic (2018 and 2019) and post-pandemic (2022 and 2023) period. Preterm birth rates during summer and winter in the pre-pandemic, pandemic, and post-pandemic years were analyzed. A comparison with rates during strict lockdown was made. Results: Out of 52,021 newborn infants, 4473 were born preterm. Preterm birth rates remained stable across all three periods (p = 0.13), and no significant seasonal pattern was identified (p = 0.65). In contrast, stillbirth rates increased notably during the strict lockdown period, with the median incidence almost doubling compared to other periods (0.87%, p = 0.05), while remaining unchanged during the rest of the pandemic (p = 0.52). Conclusions: Our study found that preterm birth rates remained unaffected by the pandemic and lockdown periods, while stillbirths increased significantly during the strict lockdown. These findings highlight the importance of maintaining access to timely antenatal care during public health emergencies to prevent adverse perinatal outcomes. Full article

People living with HIV (PLWH) faced diverse challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, including disruptions to care, housing instability, emotional distress, and economic hardship. This study used graph-based clustering methods to analyze pandemic-era experiences of PLWH in a national sample from the NIH’s All of Us dataset (n = 242). Across three graph configurations we identified consistent subgroups shaped by social connectedness, housing stability, emotional well-being, and engagement with preventive behaviors. Comparison with an earlier local study of PLWH in Illinois confirmed recurring patterns of vulnerability and resilience while also revealing additional national-level subgroups not observed in the smaller sample. Subgroups with strong social or institutional ties were associated with greater emotional stability and proactive engagement with COVID-19 preventive behaviors, while those facing isolation and structural hardship exhibited elevated distress and limited engagement with COVID-19 preventive measures. These findings underscore the importance of precision public health strategies that reflect the heterogeneity of PLWH and suggest that strengthening social support networks, promoting housing stability, and leveraging institutional connections may enhance pandemic preparedness and HIV care in future public health crises. Avian influenza viruses (AIVs) pose significant risks to occupational populations engaged in poultry farming, livestock handling, and live poultry market operations due to frequent exposure to infected animals and contaminated environments. This review synthesizes evidence on AIV exposure patterns and risk factors through a comprehensive analysis of viral characteristics, host dynamics, environmental influences, and human behaviors. The main routes of transmission include direct animal contact, respiratory contact during slaughter/milking, and environmental contamination (aerosols, raw milk, shared equipment). Risks increase as the virus adapts between species, survives longer in cold/wet conditions, and spreads through wild bird migration (long-distance transmission) and live bird trade (local transmission). Recommended control measures include integrated animal–human–environment surveillance, stringent biosecurity measures, vaccination, and education. These findings underscore the urgent need for global ‘One Health’ collaboration to assess risk and implement preventive measures against potentially pandemic strains of influenza A viruses, especially in light of undetected mild/asymptomatic cases and incomplete knowledge of viral evolution. Background: The long-term impact of SARS-CoV-2 infection on pulmonary function remains insufficiently characterised, particularly among individuals who have experienced mild or asymptomatic disease. This study aimed to assess spirometric changes over a three-year period and evaluate potential associations with demographic and clinical variables. Methods: We retrospectively analysed spirometry data from 103 healthcare workers (HCWs) who underwent pulmonary function tests at three time points: before the pandemic (Time 0), one year post-pandemic (Time 1), and two years post-pandemic (Time 2). Linear regression models were employed to evaluate the impact of various factors, including age, BMI, gender, smoking status, history of SARS-CoV-2 infection, vaccination status prior to infection, and the number of infections, on changes in FVC and FEV1. Results: A statistically significant decrease in both FVC and FEV1 were observed at Time 1 and Time 2 compared to baseline (p < 0.05). Smoking habits were significantly associated with a greater decline in both FVC and FEV1. Multiple infections were associated with larger reductions in FVC at Time 1. No significant associations were found with age, gender, BMI, or vaccination status. Even in the absence of severe symptoms of the disease, healthcare workers exhibited a measurable decline in pulmonary function over time. Smoking and reinfection emerged as relevant factors associated with reduced lung capacity. Conclusions: These findings emphasise the need for ongoing respiratory monitoring in occupational settings and the importance of targeted preventive measures. Full article

Background and Objectives: Schizophrenia is a disabling psychiatric condition, affecting around 1% of people worldwide. It has been ranked among the ten most disabling conditions globally. Alongside the psychological and social burdens imposed on individuals suffering from this disease, there are also serious complications regarding the physical health of these patients. Pneumonia is a significant cause of death in patients with schizophrenia. This group of patients also has a higher risk of developing pneumonia and all-cause mortality compared to those without schizophrenia, along with an increased overall mortality rate. A retrospective study revealed that advanced age, underweight, smoking, and the use of high-dose atypical antipsychotics increase the risk of pneumonia-related mortality in hospitalized patients. Our study aims to examine differences in factors associated with pneumonia in hospitalized patients with schizophrenia, before and after the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as to identify potential changes in clinical characteristics and outcomes. Materials and Methods: This is an observational, retrospective analysis, based on the review of medical records of psychiatric inpatients diagnosed with schizophrenia according to the DSM-5 criteria. Patients were selected according to the following criteria: both schizophrenia and pneumonia diagnoses, hospitalized in Spitalul Clinic de Psihiatrie si Neurologie Brasov during 1 March 2018–1 March 2020, and 1 March 2022–1 March 2024, respectively. Results: A total of 27 patients met the inclusion criteria; 13 patients (48%) were in the pre-pandemic group and 14 patients (52%) in the post-pandemic group. Contrary to other reports, our results showed relatively low pneumonia rates in hospitalized schizophrenia patients (1.02% pre-pandemic and 1.63% post-pandemic), and rates were higher in female patients (61.54% pre-pandemic and 71.43% post-pandemic). Post-pandemic, most cases (42.86%) were registered during summer, in a schizophrenia population with mostly urban residence and with lower smoking rates than the pre-pandemic group. Physical restraints were, however, more frequently utilized in the post-pandemic group. Conclusions: Pneumonia risk factors might register a change in the post-pandemic years. Polypharmacy and physical restraints are probably underestimated risk factors for pneumonia in schizophrenia patients, while a multidisciplinary approach and preventive measures might exert a protective role. The COVID-19 pandemic caused immense physical disruptions, affecting young adults in the U.S. The Health Belief Model is a social psychological framework that predicts the likelihood of adopting health behavior. The purpose of this research is to investigate COVID-19-related health beliefs and dietary behaviors among undergraduate students during the pandemic. Using convenience sampling, a cross-sectional survey was completed by 304 individuals at a New Jersey state university. Survey data included the frequency of COVID-19 prevention behaviors (e.g., wearing an indoor mask, handwashing), and consumption of fruit and vegetables. The Health Belief Model constructs measured perceived susceptibility to COVID-19, severity, benefits, barriers, and self-efficacy. Frequency distributions, t-tests, and Kruskal–Wallis tests were investigated for racial subgroups (Whites, Blacks, Latinos, and Asians). The mean age of the sample was 21.7, with 27% males, and 46% self-identified as White. Whites adopted fewer COVID-19 prevention behaviors (p < 0.001) than non-Whites. Black students perceived less COVID-19 severity (p < 0.01) and stronger perceived benefits (p < 0.05) than the other subgroups. Latino students perceived greater susceptibility (p < 0.01) and greater barriers than non-Latinos. Asians practiced higher mask wearing frequency (p < 0.05) but less daily fruit intake than their counterparts (p < 0.01). This research highlights the importance of handwashing, wearing indoor masks, and consuming produce among university students. Addressing barriers to health action while promoting the benefits of enacting behaviors to mitigate the risk of COVID-19 is warranted. Full article

The COVID-19 pandemic was a particularly challenging time for the construction industry as it experienced significant disruptions to operations, affecting various stakeholders. With various national and international health agencies promoting preventive measures, the construction industry struggled with the implementation of these measures due to the unique nature of the work involved in construction. This study aimed to highlight the ways in which stakeholders in the construction industry interacted and responded to the prescribed preventive measures through social media analysis. Using model-based clustering and structural topic modelling, this study provided insights into the prevalent discussion topics in social media around prevention measures in construction. In addition, sentiment analysis demonstrated interesting polarisation around the topic areas. Four prevalent topics that encapsulated the entirety of the social media data were identified, with two of the topics showing an upward trend, as expected, while the other two topics showed a contrasting downward trend. These findings offer practical value for construction managers and policymakers by revealing the effectiveness of different communication strategies and identifying areas where prevention measures faced resistance or acceptance. The sentiment polarisation patterns (50% positive, 40% negative) provide actionable insights for developing more targeted engagement approaches, while the topic evolution trends inform the timing and focus of safety communications. Construction organisations can leverage these insights to improve workplace safety protocols and enhance stakeholder buy-in for future health initiatives. This study lays the foundation for future studies to investigate the connections between the prevalent prevention and the interrelated dynamics within the conversation regarding COVID-19 prevention strategies in the construction sector. The rapid shift to online education during the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated mental health risks for students, particularly those experiencing multidimensional poverty—a potential contributor to psychological distress in digital learning environments. This study examines how poverty-driven techno-distress (technology-related stress) impacts university students’ mental health, focusing on 202 Chilean learners engaged in remote classes. Using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM), we analyzed multidimensional poverty and its association with techno-distress, measured through validated scales. The results suggest that poverty conditions are associated with 32.5% of technostress variance (R2 = 0.325), while techno-distress may indirectly relate to 18.7% of students’ dissatisfaction with academic life—a proxy for emerging mental health risks. Importance–performance map analysis (IPMA) identified housing habitability (e.g., overcrowding, inadequate study spaces) and healthcare access as priority intervention targets, surpassing purely digital factors. These findings indicate that techno-distress in online education may function as a systemic stressor, potentially amplifying pre-existing inequities linked to poverty. For educators and policymakers, this highlights the urgency of early interventions addressing students’ physical environments alongside pedagogical strategies. By framing techno-distress as a public health challenge rooted in socioeconomic disparities, this work advances preventive approaches to safeguard student well-being in increasingly hybrid educational landscapes. This paper investigates the spillover effects and transmission networks of systemic risk within China’s national economic sectors under extreme conditions from both time and frequency domain perspectives, building upon the spillover index methodology and calculating the ∆CoVaR index for Chinese industries. The findings indicate the following: (1) Extreme-risk spillovers synchronize across industries but exhibit pronounced time-varying peaks during the 2008 Global Financial Crisis, the 2015 crash, and the COVID-19 pandemic. (2) Long-term spillovers dominate overall connectedness, highlighting the lasting impact of fundamentals and structural linkages. (3) In terms of risk volatility, Energy, Materials, Consumer Discretionary, and Financials are most sensitive to systemic market shocks. (4) On the risk spillover effect, Consumer Discretionary, Industrials, Healthcare, and Information Technology consistently act as net transmitters of extreme risk, while Energy, Materials, Consumer Staples, Financials, Telecom Services, Utilities, and Real Estate primarily serve as net receivers. Based on these findings, the paper suggests deepening the regulatory mechanisms for systemic risk, strengthening the synergistic effect of systemic risk measurement and early warning indicators, and coordinating risk monitoring, early warning, and risk prevention and mitigation. It further emphasizes the importance of avoiding fragmented regulation by establishing a joint risk prevention mechanism across sectors and departments, strengthening the supervision of inter-industry capital flows. Finally, it highlights the need to closely monitor the formation mechanisms and transmission paths of new financial risks under the influence of the pandemic to prevent the accumulation and eruption of risks in the post-pandemic era. Authorities must conduct annual “Industry Transmission Reviews” to map emerging risk nodes and supply-chain vulnerabilities, refine policy tools, and stabilize market expectations so as to forestall the build-up and sudden release of new systemic shocks. Human respiratory syncytial virus (HRSV) is a highly contagious RNA virus that causes respiratory infections, especially in children. This study evaluated the impact of COVID-19 control measure changes on HRSV infection patterns in Hangzhou by comparing epidemiological and clinical characteristics. We conducted a retrospective analysis of 12,993 pediatric nasopharyngeal swab samples from children with acute respiratory infections at The Children’s Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine. These samples, collected between February 2022 and January 2024, were screened for HRSV and 12 other respiratory pathogens using capillary electrophoresis technology. From February 2022 to January 2023, the HRSV positivity rate was 7.06%. In 2023, it increased to 9.26%. The highest positivity rates were in infants aged 0–6 months and children aged 6 months to 1 year. Coinfections were most common with rhinovirus in 2022 and Mycoplasma pneumoniae in 2023. HRSV positivity rates were low from April to September 2022, peaking in December. In 2023, the peak occurred from April to September. Symptoms ranged from mild to severe pneumonia, with higher hospitalization rates in children with underlying conditions. The study revealed significant changes in HRSV infection rates following pandemic restriction relaxations, emphasizing the need for the early identification and prevention of severe cases. Nasal Emulgel’s Role in Preventing Coronavirus Infection

Background/Objectives: Coronaviruses (CoVs) are a large family of respiratory viruses that cause respiratory illnesses ranging from mild colds to severe diseases such as severe acute respiratory syndrome and pandemics. The nasal cavity is a primary site for CoV entry and transmission. The study aimed to prepare a novel mucoadhesive emulgel specifically formulated with simple, safe, and cost-effective excipients to create a barrier on the nasal mucosa that impedes CoV infection. This formulation strategy was specifically designed to enable rapid and straightforward in vivo translation, addressing a critical gap in preventive measures against respiratory viruses. Methods: Three emulgels, containing macadamia oil, Carbopol and different percentages of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (1, 1.2 and 1.5% (w/v), HPMC), were properly prepared and characterized for mucoadhesion, viscosity, and spreadability. The biological activity against SARS-CoV-2 was evaluated in vitro on infected epithelial cells. Results: The emulgel with 1.2% HPMC demonstrated optimal physicochemical properties (mucoadhesion: 342 ± 9 mN/cm2; viscosity: 1080 ± 83 cp; spreadability: 7.27 ± 0.06 cm) suitable for nasal application. Importantly, in vitro biological assays demonstrated that this emulgel significantly inhibits SARS-CoV-2 infection in epithelial cells, indicating an effective barrier to viral diffusion. Conclusions: By employing readily available, safe, and inexpensive excipients, this novel mucoadhesive emulgel offers a practical, scalable, and rapidly translatable nasal prophylactic approach to prevent early SARS-CoV-2 infection, addressing a critical unmet need in pandemic preparedness. Background: Dental professionals were thought to have the most significant risk of coronavirus infection during the pandemic. Since the first Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) patient was detected in Japan in January 2020, Japan has faced several waves of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infections. However, no cluster of SARS-CoV-2 infections associated with dental procedures has been reported in Japan. In this study, we aimed to investigate the actual status of SARS-CoV-2 infection during the pandemic through antibody testing for dental professionals. We further investigated saliva and oral management-related aerosol to estimate the risk of virus transmission during dental procedures. Methods: SARS-CoV-2 antibody titer in the blood of dental professionals and their families was determined during the pre-vaccinated period of the SARS-CoV-2 wave to see the history of infection in Japan. Viral loads in saliva and in the aerosol generated during the oral management of COVID-19 patients were detected by RT-qPCR. Results: The antibody testing of dental healthcare providers during the early phases of the pandemic in Japan revealed low antibody positivity, which supported the low incidence of infection clusters among dental clinics. The aerosol generated during dental procedures may contain trace levels of SARS-CoV-2, indicating the risk of transmission through dental procedures is limited. Therefore, SARS-CoV-2 did not spread through dental clinics. Conclusions: Very few SARS-CoV-2 infections were observed in dental professionals who took appropriate infection control measures in the early period of the pandemic. Performing dental procedures using standard precautions seems to be sufficient to prevent SARS-CoV-2 infections. Full article

How Did the Dietary Behavior of Older Korean Adults Change During the COVID-19 Pandemic?

Objectives: This study comparatively evaluated changes in the food habits and dietary patterns of adults aged ≥65 years before and during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic using a retrospective study. Methods: Data covering the 2018–2021 period were derived from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Results: Comparing the 2943 individuals in the “Before-COVID-19” individuals with the 2916 people in the “During COVID-19” group, the frequency of drinking four or more times a week decreased among the older adults during the pan-demic, as did the frequency of eating three meals a day and eating-out at least once a week. On the other hand, food security improved during the pandemic compared with before the pandemic. During the pandemic, the intake of cereals and grains decreased, while that of potatoes and starches, legumes, vegetables, eggs, milk and dairy products, and oils and fats increased. Although energy and carbohydrate intake decreased, protein, fiber, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, potassium, zinc, riboflavin, vitamin E, vitamin C, folic acid, and fat intake increased. However, the intake of vitamin A, vitamin C, and calcium remained lower than the estimated adequate requirement of the Dietary Reference Intakes for Koreans. Additionally, the rate of nutritional insufficiency “During COVID-19” (20.76%) was 1.31–1.42 times higher than that “Before COVID-19” (16.45%). Even in models that adjusted for other factors, the rate of nutritional insufficiency was higher during the pandemic than before. Conclusions: Based on these findings, measures such as dietary education programs and guidelines for proper nutrient intake should be formulated to prevent imbalances in nutrient intake among older Koreans.
