In the digital age, online teacher professional development (TPD) has become a key strategy for enhancing instructional quality and ensuring equitable access to continuous learning. This research compares and analyzes Chinese online teacher professional development (TPD) with the United States over a period of ten years, from 2014 to 2024. This study uses a mixed-methods approach based on policy documents, structured surveys, and interviews to investigate how governance regimes influence TPD outcomes for fair education. Both countries experienced a massive expansion of web-based TPD access and engagement, with participation rates over 75% and effectiveness scores over 4.3 by 2024. China focused on fast scaling by way of centralized mandates and investments in infrastructure, while the United States emphasized gradual expansion through decentralized, locally appropriate models. Most indicators had converged by the end of the period, even with these different approaches. Yet, qualitative evidence reveals persisting gaps in functional access and contextual appropriateness, especially in rural settings. Equality frameworks with attention to teacher agency, policy implementation, and digital usability must supplant weak access metrics. A hybrid paradigm presents itself as an attractive means toward building equitable and productive digital TPD environments through the symbiotic integration of China’s successful scalability and the United States’ professional autonomy. Sustainable education requires addressing the challenges posed by digital transformation, including technostress among university students. This study evaluates technostress levels in higher education through the validation of the TS4US scale and its implications for sustainable learning environments. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 328 university students from four districts in Lima, Peru, using an online survey to measure technostress. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was performed to assess the psychometric properties of the TS4US scale, resulting in a refined model with two latent factors and thirteen validated items. Findings indicate that 28% of students experience high technostress levels, while 5% report very high levels, though no significant associations were found between technostress and sociodemographic variables such as campus location, employment status, gender, and academic level. The TS4US instrument had been previously validated in Chile; this study confirms its structure in a new sociocultural context, reinforcing its cross-cultural applicability. These results highlight the need for sustainable strategies to mitigate technostress in higher education, including institutional support, digital literacy programs, and policies fostering a balanced technological environment. Addressing technostress is essential for promoting sustainable education (SDG4) and enhancing student well-being (SDG3). This study directly contributes to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and 4 (Quality Education) by providing validated tools and evidence-based recommendations to promote mental health and equitable access to digital education in Latin America. Future research should explore cross-country comparisons and targeted interventions, including digital well-being initiatives and adaptive learning strategies, to ensure a resilient and sustainable academic ecosystem. Gaming is a popular leisure activity with an increasing number of participants worldwide. It has positive aspects as well as a problematic side—Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD). This behavior attracts concern among mental health and education professionals because of possible negative psycho-emotional factors. This study aimed to assess IGD among Japanese and Israeli university students and other young adults. We explored the association of culture and IGD based on gender, burnout, and loneliness. It was hypothesized that IGD would differentiate based on the respondent country (i.e., Japan or Israel) and gender, with males reporting higher levels. Furthermore, IGD would be associated with higher levels of loneliness and burnout, regardless of country. Qualtrics and Excel platforms were used to collect responses to the Internet Gaming Disorder Scale–Short Form, De Jong Gierveld Loneliness Scale, and Short Burnout Measure (SBM). Data was gathered from a cross-cultural sample of 1318 male and female university students and other young adults in Japan and Israel, between 2022 and 2023. Japanese gamers showed less IGD (p < 0.05); and males evidenced higher levels regardless of their country (p < 0.001). IGD was significantly associated with loneliness (p < 0.001) and burnout (p < 0.001). However, multiple regression analysis showed that IGD is predicted only by burnout and gender (p < 0.001), Adjusted R2 = 0.234. This study provides information for policy, prevention, and intervention purposes targeting burnout particularly among males who are a high-risk group. Additionally, this study contributes to possible joint online program development to reduce IGD among Japanese and Israeli gamers. Further research should examine the association between IGD and loneliness, controlling gender and other factors such as substance use, religiosity, eating behavior, depression, game genre, and motivation to play. Background and Objective: Despite growing emphasis on quality and safety in healthcare, there remains a limited understanding of how Quality Improvement and Patient Safety (QI/PS) training for health workers has evolved in response to global events like the COVID-19 pandemic and the WHO Global Patient Safety Action Plan. This rapid scoping review aimed to not only identify existing curricula but also uncover trends, innovation gaps, and global inequities in QI/PS education—providing timely insights for reshaping future training strategies. Methods: We searched MEDLINE and Scopus for English-language studies published between January 2020 and April 2024, describing QI and/or PS curricula across graduate, postgraduate, and continuing education levels. All healthcare worker groups were eligible, with no geographic limitations. Two reviewers conducted independent screening and data extraction; a third verified the results. Results: Among 3290 records, 74 curricula met inclusion criteria, with a majority originating from the US (58, 78.4%) and targeting physicians—especially residents and fellows (43/46, 93.5%). Only 27% of curricula were multidisciplinary. While traditional didactic (66.2%) and interactive (73%) approaches remained prevalent, curricula launched after 2020 introduced novel formats such as Massive Open Online Courses and gamification, with long-term programs uniformly leveraging web-based platforms. Common thematic content included Root Cause Analysis, Plan-Do-Study-Act cycles, QI tools, communication skills, and incident reporting. English-language peer-reviewed published literature indicated a marked lack of structured QI/PS training in Europe, Asia, and Africa. Conclusions: This review reveals both an uneven development and fragmentation in global QI/PS training efforts, alongside emerging opportunities catalyzed by digital transformation and pandemic-era innovation. The findings highlight a critical gap: while interest in QI/PS is growing, scalable, inclusive, and evidence-based curricula remain largely concentrated in a few high-income countries. By mapping these disparities and innovations, this review provides actionable direction for advancing more equitable and modern QI/PS education worldwide, whilst showcasing the need to systematically delve into QI/PS training in underrepresented regions. Hackathon events have become increasingly popular in recent years as a modern tool for innovation in the education sector as they offer important learning advantages. Within the “INVITE” Erasmus+ project, four distinct hackathons were organized to bring together academic institutions, teachers, and students in the design of innovative international virtual and blended collaborations. In addition, as part of the “INVITE” project, an Open Interactive Digital Ecosystem (digital platform) has been developed to facilitate hackathons organization and was tested within two of the events. This platform can enhance hosting action-training programs providing a shared open resources space for educators to contact peers and design projects. All four hackathons were held during 2024 and their duration and type (onsite, blended, hybrid, and online) varied significantly. However, all hackathon topics were related to sustainability, SDGs, and Green Agenda. In total, more than 220 participants enrolled in the four events, including students, researchers, and professors from different disciplines, age groups, and countries. All participants were provided with qualitative surveys to explore their satisfaction and experiences. The results compare different hackathon setups to reveal valuable insights regarding the optimal design for higher education hackathons. Full article

Food systems interact through multiple dimensions including food security, nutrition, and planetary health. This study aims to associate different dietary patterns with sustainable lifestyles in Latin America and Spain. This was an observational, analytical, multicenter, cross-sectional survey study, with a total of 6412 participants. A self-administered questionnaire was developed in an online format in the Google Docs interface. The questionnaire was divided into sections: (1) sociodemographic background: country of residence, age, sex, educational level, socioeconomic aspects, and place of residence; (2) body mass index classification; (3) dietary patterns (Western, vegetarian, vegan, ketogenic, Mediterranean, prudent, or paleolithic diets); and (4) the Sustainable Lifestyles Survey. Multivariate models were applied to adjust for potential confounding factors. The mean age of the participants was 35.2 years (SD 12.7). The majority of participants identified their dietary pattern as omnivorous (41.5%), followed by the Western diet (21.7%) and the Mediterranean diet (12.7%). Plant-based, vegan (β: 14.90; 95% CI: 9.75–20.05), and lacto egg (β: 12.08; 95% CI: 8.57–15.58) diets are significantly associated with a higher sustainability score compared to an omnivorous diet. In contrast, a Western diet is inversely associated (β: −5.63; 95% CI: −7.20 to −4.06). Finally, a vegan (Sub-score 1: β: 6.19; 95% CI: 4.43–7.96) diet is consistently associated with higher levels of sustainability in all areas assessed. In contrast, the Western diet shows a significant negative association with sustainability in all subcomponents assessed. Conclusions: Plant-based dietary patterns were shown to be associated with sustainable lifestyles, with the vegan diet having the greatest association, while the Western dietary pattern was inversely associated. Background/Objective: Early mobilization (EM) of critically ill patients is a feasible and safe intervention that limits the implications of bed rest and improves lung function. However, its limited implementation suggests a gap between the research evidence and clinical practice. It is widely accepted that early mobilization faces a variety of barriers. This study aimed to investigate the perceptions of Greek physiotherapists on EM barriers and record their knowledge and practices. Methods: We conducted an electronic survey using the online platform “Microsoft Forms”, among critical care physiotherapists in 66 hospitals that had an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) department in Greece in 2024. We administered a questionnaire, developed based on valid and reliable international questionnaires, with the following domains: education and knowledge on early mobilization, practices, perception regarding EM, and perceived barriers to early mobilization. Results: A total of 126 Greek physical therapists participated. The majority of them worked in urban area hospitals and in a rotation schedule around all departments. Most physical therapists stated that early mobilization is a priority for the patient’s rehabilitation and an important factor in preventing the complications of bed rest. Yet, they do not use specific protocols. Most had knowledge of what EM involved and the international guidelines. The most common barriers reported were the hemodynamic instability and the incoherence with the ventilator. Dedicated physiotherapists singled out certain barriers like the presence of delirium and the lack of communication among ICU staff. Additionally, physiotherapists with more years of experience did not acknowledge tubes, connections, femoral lines and Body Mass Index (BMI) as barriers. Conclusions: Most Greek physiotherapists believe that early mobilization is crucial for the rehabilitation of critically ill patients. A significant percentage know the guidelines, yet they do not follow a specific protocol. Various barriers prevent its implementation, which depends on the patients, healthcare providers, and the overall process. Yet, It is recognized that practices and perceived barriers are influenced by experience and work schedule. Establishing clinical protocols is essential to facilitate the implementation of early mobilization and support patient rehabilitation. Future efforts should focus on designing strategies and EM protocols for physiotherapy in Greek ICUs. Also, we need to monitor changes in perceived barriers across other countries as focus on the matter via published studies and clinical seminars could lead to significant changes. Full article

Entrepreneurship has long been a key driver of economic development across various countries. Investigating the determinants of entrepreneurial behaviour is essential for making a meaningful contribution to sustainable development. This study investigated the determinants of entrepreneurial behaviour among university of technology and TVET college students in South Africa, utilising the modified theory of planned behaviour. Specifically, the study explored how risk-taking propensity, financial and non-financial support, media, and gender influence perceived behavioural control, entrepreneurial intention, and behaviour. Additionally, the study tested the direct effects of perceived behavioural control on both entrepreneurial intention and entrepreneurial behaviour, as well as the direct effect of entrepreneurial intention on entrepreneurial behaviour. An online, structured, self-administered questionnaire was utilised to gather data from 496 finalyear diploma students at a university of technology and a TVET college, using a convenience sampling technique. Partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) was applied to analyse the data and test the postulated hypotheses. The findings revealed that non-financial support positively affected entrepreneurial intention, perceived behavioural control, and entrepreneurial behaviour, while financial support did not. Risk-taking propensity significantly influenced perceived behavioural control, entrepreneurial intention, and entrepreneurial behaviour. The results revealed that the gender was negatively related to perceived behavioural control, and female students exhibited lower perceived behavioural control than their male counterparts. However, gender showed no significant association with entrepreneurial intention or entrepreneurial behaviour. Media had a positive influence on both entrepreneurial intention and perceived behavioural control but did not significantly affect entrepreneurial behaviour. Additionally, both entrepreneurial intention and entrepreneurial behaviour were positively influenced by perceived behavioural control, while entrepreneurial intention also was positively associated with entrepreneurial behaviour. These findings underscore the critical role of fostering a supportive entrepreneurial environment in shaping entrepreneurial behaviour. This study provides valuable insights for policymakers and educators to cultivate an environment that supports students in developing as entrepreneurs. The results can inform policymakers in implementing support interventions aimed at enhancing entrepreneurial capacity among the youth. Promoting entrepreneurship is vital in achieving sustainable development goals through job creation and poverty alleviation. Full article

Workforce Career Development in Public Health, Health Education, and the Health Services: Insights from 30 Years of Cross-Disciplinary National and International Mentoring

This paper presents my personal experiences of cross-disciplinary national and international academic mentoring over 30 years in a higher education setting, supporting 605 mentees in public health, health education, and the health services. I supported mentees at diverse career stages through (a) one-to-one mentoring relationships (n = 231 mentees; from the UK, Europe, Middle East, Africa, Asia, and Australasia; academics, industry, and healthcare professionals), (b) a cross-faculty structured mentoring programme (n = 52; junior faculty), (c) a cross-institutional interprofessional internship programme including mentoring and public health placements (n = 302 interns; from five universities), and (d) an interprofessional learning programme in workplace health called WHIRL, which was embedded within Test@Work, a public health innovation bridging health promotion practice, research, and industry and involving peer mentoring and mentor support (n = 20; volunteer healthcare trainees). In this paper, I outline the broader concept of mentoring, together with an overview of mentoring types, uses, and benefits. The diverse contexts in which mentoring occurs are discussed: (i) micro-mentoring, (ii) inducting new staff, (iii) peer mentoring, (iv) career transition moments, (v) career advancement mentoring, (vi) diversity mentoring, (vii) knowledge sharing mentoring, (viii) collaborative learning and support mentoring, and (ix) leadership development mentoring. The challenges of mentoring are presented alongside suggested actions to take. I advocate for mentoring evaluation and provide a worked example of measuring the outcomes of one-to-one mentoring using The Career Support and Psychosocial Support Scales (online survey; n = 103 mentees; from 22 countries). Finally, I reflect upon the diversity of mentoring experiences, with activities and benefits categorised into six key areas: interpersonal relationships; networking opportunities; enhancing knowledge and skills; employment, reward and recognition; support for under-served groups; and convening communities of practice. Assessing Knowledge of Sustainable Development Goals Among Diverse Students: A Case Study of Al Qasimia University

This research tests and assesses Al Qasimia University students’ knowledge of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The diversity of the university’s student body enhances the sample’s representativeness, allowing for an assessment of SDG knowledge across different populations and cultures. 119 responses were collected through online surveys. The respondents come from 41 countries across Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and Europe. The results show no statistically significant difference in knowledge levels based on gender. On the other hand, while nationality does not significantly influence the average level of SDG knowledge, place of residence does. Students who reside in economically better-off countries have a higher average knowledge of the SDGs. Moreover, the students perceived economic and social SDGs as more relevant to their future careers than environmental SDGs. This may be explained by their greater exposure to training related to the social and economic dimensions of the SDGs at the university level. The analysis also revealed that students view formal education as a more significant source of knowledge of SDGs than informal education. This highlights universities’ and academic institutions’ critical role in promoting sustainability education. While this research contributes to the literature on students’ knowledge of SDGs, it primarily focuses on students’ perceptions of their knowledge rather than their knowledge itself. Future research will aim to address this limitation by evaluating actual knowledge levels. Full article

Innovative technologies have become a key driver of global development, enhancing communication, streamlining processes, and facilitating institutional collaboration. This study examines the perceptions of researchers and academic staff involved in research activities within educational institutions in Romania, a country that has faced challenges in intellectual property management and registration processes. The research focuses on the innovation registration process and the need for an online platform leveraging new digital technologies for intellectual property protection. Using an econometric model developed and tested through WarpPLS 8.0, the analysis reveals that 84% of respondents’ perceptions of the innovation registration process can be explained by the independent variables at the pattern level. The findings underscore the importance of aligning global legislative frameworks to stimulate innovation, promote intellectual property rights registration, and support sustainable economic growth. Furthermore, the study advocates for the development of an online platform that integrates artificial intelligence to enhance its functionality, streamline the application process, and foster the creation and dissemination of innovative technologies. By addressing these issues in Romania, the research contributes to global sustainable development objectives by providing a model for improving innovation registration processes worldwide, thus promoting technological advancement, intellectual property protection, and sustainable economic growth. Facilitators and Barriers to Antiretroviral Therapy Adherence Among Adolescents and Young Adults in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Scoping Review

Background: Globally, approximately 65% of adolescents undergoing antiretroviral therapy (ART) adhered to their treatment, whereas only 55% achieved viral suppression in 2023. The low rate of viral suppression is concerning, as elevated viral loads are associated with a heightened risk of opportunistic infections, progression to advanced HIV disease, increased mortality, and greater HIV transmission rates. We conducted this scoping review to identify the facilitators and barriers to ART adherence among adolescents and young adults (AYAs) in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Methods: We conducted this scoping review following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) checklist. We searched for peer-reviewed articles published in English from 2014 to 2024 across the SCOPUS, ScienceDirect, PubMed, Africa Journals Online, and Google Scholar databases. Two reviewers independently selected the articles and extracted the data. We used NVivo to develop codes and categories of facilitators and barriers. Results: We used 30 articles reporting on studies conducted in 13 countries in this review. The total number of participants in the studies was 12,250. Sixteen articles reported on qualitative studies, nine on quantitative studies, and five on mixed-methods studies. This scoping review identified various personal (14 articles), interpersonal and social (15 articles), healthcare system-related (9 articles), medication-related (7 articles), and economic (2 articles) factors that facilitate ART adherence among AYAs. Additionally, the scoping review also identified various personal (28 articles), interpersonal and social (13 articles), healthcare system-related (14 articles), medication-related (20 articles), school- or work-related (6 articles), and economic (14 articles) factors that hinder ART adherence among AYAs. Conclusions: Enhancing ART adherence in AYAs requires multiple strategies, including the reduction of internalized stigma, implementation of community awareness campaigns, harm reduction approaches for AYAs who misuse substances, comprehensive education on HIV, and the provision of support from school staff and leadership, alongside the adoption of differentiated service delivery (DSD), which encompasses home-based ART delivery, refills at private pharmacies, community ART distribution centers, and patient-led community ART refill groups, as well as multi-month dispensing practices. The economic and health context in recent years has led to an increase in return migration of Romanians and an increased propensity to settle down in their country of origin. Remigration can be lived as a life experience with an extremely high vulnerabilising potential, with obvious consequences in terms of adaptation and psychological consequences, and a negative impact especially on children and adolescents. The present study is based on an online survey conducted between July 2023 and February 2024 among teachers in the North-East Region of Romania and had the overall objective of assessing the effects of return migration on Romanian remigrant pupils. This phenomenon was analysed on the basis of teachers’ perceptions of the behaviour of pupils who have experienced emigration, followed by remigration, equivalence of studies and integration or reintegration into the Romanian education system. Our study is exploratory and could be followed by the analysis of the same phenomenon from other perspectives (children, parents). The results of the study show that after remigration, some children and adolescents are faced with many educational and social adjustment problems for which they were not prepared. Remigration increases stress, and educational integration is in most cases a difficult process. The negative impact translates into limited opportunities for emotional, social, and intellectual development, or even behavioural disorders, which affect the quality of life of remigrant pupils and their long-term quality of life. Positive aspects of children’s remigration have also been identified. Full article

Background/Objectives: Gastric cancer remains a leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide and surgical resection represents the mainstay of treatment procedures. However, despite the advancements noted in the field of surgical oncology, perioperative complications and variability in the perioperative care provided persist. To address the challenges caused by non-standardized perioperative care for gastric surgery across European healthcare systems, the EUropean PErioperative MEdical Networking (EUPEMEN) protocol has been developed. The present study concisely provides the EUPEMEN protocol’s development, implementation, and impact on perioperative management in gastric resections. Methods: The EUPEMEN protocol was developed through a multidisciplinary collaboration involving five academic healthcare professionals from four European countries. The main activities of the collaborative group included a literature review, consensus development, the creation of multimodal rehabilitation manuals, and the development of an online learning platform. The EUPEMEN project aims for the uniform adoption of evidence-based practices across preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases, leading in nutritional, psychological, and physiological optimization. Results: The implementation of the EUPEMEN protocol aims to optimize perioperative outcomes, including reduced postoperative complications, a shorter length of hospitalization, and improved recovery trajectories. The above have been achieved through structured guidelines that ensure consistent care delivery across diverse healthcare settings and tools such as rehabilitation manuals and a free-access online educational platform. Conclusions: The EUPEMEN protocol represents a new standard for perioperative care in the field of gastric surgery that is based on multidisciplinary collaboration and evidence-based practices. While challenges such as resource constraints and variability in adherence remain, the protocol demonstrates significant potential to improve patient outcomes and streamline perioperative management. Future research should focus on long-term effects and adaptation challenges in the setting of non-European healthcare systems. Full article

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) have become increasingly prevalent in higher education, with the COVID-19 pandemic further accelerating their integration, particularly in developing countries. While MOOCs offered a vital solution for educational continuity during the pandemic, factors influencing students’ sustained engagement with them remain understudied. This longitudinal study examines the factors influencing learners’ sustained engagement with ThaiMOOC, incorporating demographic characteristics, usage log data, and key predictors of adoption and completion. Our research collected primary data from 841 university students who enrolled in ThaiMOOC as a mandatory curriculum component, using online surveys with open-ended questions and post-course usage log analysis. Logistic regression analysis indicates that adoption intention, course content, and perceived effectiveness significantly predict students’ Actual Continued Usage (ACU). Moreover, gender, prior MOOC experience, and specific usage behaviors emerge as influential factors. Content analysis highlights the importance of local language support and the desire for safety during the COVID-19 pandemic. Key elements driving ACU include video design, course content, assessment, and learner-to-learner interaction. Full article
