Local apple (Malus x domestica Borkh.) cultivars with tolerance to environmental stress factors must be re-evaluated. While the cultivation of apple trees has a long-standing tradition in Hungary, only a handful of cultivars are produced on a large scale, reflecting a trend in global apple production. The most commonly cultivated apple cultivars worldwide include ‘Golden Delicious’, ‘Red Delicious’, ‘Gala’, ‘Fuji’, and ‘Granny Smith’ (with ‘Jonagold’ and ‘Idared’ being significant in Europe). As a result, genetic diversity among apple cultivars has decreased significantly, which has increased the risk of epidemics if a new pathogen appears. Nonetheless, old and local apple cultivars of the Carpathian Basin have adapted well to Hungarian environmental stress factors and pathogens and seem tolerant to them. In this study, fruit analyses and consumer evaluations of eighteen old, local apple cultivars were conducted. Various physicochemical parameters, such as fruit mass, firmness, total soluble solid content, and total acid content, as well as the content of some biological active compounds, including polyphenol content, antioxidant capacity (FRAP), and pectin content, were determined. Additionally, a consumer evaluation was carried out. Based on the results, most of the old, local apple cultivars exhibit high fruit quality and offer considerable health benefits. The proportion of biologically active compounds in these cultivars is equal to or higher than that in the reference cultivar ‘Watson Jonathan’. Based on the excellent fruit quality and consumer preferences, the ‘Harang alma’ (an attractive fruit exhibiting high FRAP values) and ‘Marosszéki piros’ (with firm flesh and a high pectin content and being particularly tasty) cultivars are recommended for backyard gardens. Apples (Malus domestica Borkh.) represent one of the most widely cultivated and consumed fruits globally, with significant genetic diversity among cultivars. This study aimed to evaluate the morphological, biochemical, and organoleptic characteristics of 34 apple cultivars, including ancient Romanian varieties, internationally old and modern cultivars, and new selections. The assessment was conducted to identify valuable traits for breeding programs and commercial applications. Morphological analysis revealed significant variation in fruit size, shape, and weight, with international ‘classic’ cultivars exhibiting larger dimensions on average. Biochemical profiling indicated notable differences in moisture content, total soluble solids, titratable acidity, and carotenoid levels, with some traditional cultivars demonstrating high nutritional potential. Texture analysis showed variations in peel hardness, flesh firmness, and toughness, influencing storage capacity and consumer preference. Organoleptic evaluations highlighted the superior sensory attributes of cultivars such as ‘Golden Orange’, ‘Jonathan’, ‘Kaltherer Böhmer’, and ‘Golden Delicious’, which ranked highest in terms of taste, aroma, and juiciness. Statistical analyses, including principal component and hierarchical clustering analyses, further distinguished cultivars based on their physicochemical and sensory profiles. The findings emphasize the importance of genetic diversity in apples in maintaining a resilient and sustainable assortment. This study provides valuable insights for breeding programs and for orchard, market, and apple industry development. We also highlight future directions, promoting the conservation and strategic use of both traditional and modern cultivars. Full article

Flavor is the most important feature consumers use to examine fruit ripeness, and it also has an important influence on taste sensation. Nowadays, more and more consumers pay much attention not only to the appearance but also to the fruit’s aroma. Exploiting the potential of headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) combined with sensitive two-dimensional gas chromatography and the time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC/GC-ToF-MS) method within 30 old/traditional cultivars of apples (Malus domestica Borkh) coming from the same germplasm and 7 modern/commercial cultivars, 119 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were identified. The largest group was esters (53), followed by alcohols (20), aldehydes (17), ketones (10), and acids (10). The richest volatile profile was ‘Grochówka’, with 61 VOCs present. The results revealed a visible difference based on VOC levels and profiles between the different apple cultivars, as well as visible similarities within the same cultivar coming from different farms. Based on a PCA, the commercial cultivars were separated into 7 clusters, including (1) ‘Gala’, (2) ‘Melrose’, (3) ‘Red Prince’, (4) ‘Lobo’, (5) ‘Ligol’, and (6) ‘Szampion’. The results of this study indicate that the profile of volatile compounds may be a useful tool for distinguishing between commercial and old apple cultivars, as well as for the varietal classification of apples from different locations. The developed method can also be used to identify other fruit varieties and origins based on their VOC composition. This may prove to be particularly valuable in the case of establishing a Protected Designation of Origin or Protected Geographical Indication. Full article

The aim of this 2022 study was to evaluate the effect of tree growth-limiting treatments on the tree yield and quality of ‘Mutsu’ apples. The experiment was established on 7-year-old trees on M.9 rootstock in a commercial orchard in Wilga near Warsaw. Growth-limiting treatments included unilateral root pruning, spraying the trees with Regalis Plus 10 WG at various times, and spraying with Flordimex 480 SL. Eight combinations were used, with four replicates of 20 trees per repetition. The measurements included fruit set, length of this year’s shoots, yield per tree, average fruit weight, and the size structure of the yield. The distinctive physiological status of the apples was assessed directly after harvest, directly after 8 months of storage under CA conditions (1.5% CO2, 1.5% O2, 1 °C, >92% RH) and after an additional 7 days of shelf-life. Spraying trees with Regalis Plus 10 WG from the balloon stage onwards, irrespective of the treatment with root pruning, was most effective in both inhibiting long-stem growth and increasing tree yield (by almost two times) by increasing the number of apples per tree. The growth response of long-stemmed apple trees to both unilateral root pruning and Ethephon spray was significantly lower than it was to Regalis Plus 10 WG spray and had relatively little effect on their yield. Regalis Plus 10 WG resulted in a clear reduction in average fruit weight (by about 100 g), which, in the case of the large-fruited cultivar ‘Mutsu’, should be seen as an advantage. Its application from the balloon stage onwards promoted higher apple firmness at harvest and after simulated handling preceded by long-term storage. Full article

The effects of NaCl-induced salinity on biomass allocation, anatomical characteristics of leaves, ion accumulation, salt repellency, and salt secretion ability were investigated in two apple rootstock cultivars (Malus halliana ‘9-1-6’ and Malus baccata), which revealed the physiological adaptive mechanisms of M. halliana ‘9-1-6’ in response to salt stress factors. This experiment was conducted in a greenhouse using a nutrient solution pot. Salt stress was simulated by treating the plants with a 100 mM NaCl solution, while 1/2 Hoagland nutrient solution was used as a control (CK) instead of the NaCl solution. The results showed that the two rootstocks responded to salt environments by increasing the proportion of root biomass allocation. According to the stress susceptibility index, ‘9-1-6’ exhibits a lower salt sensitivity index and a higher salt tolerance index. The thickness of the leaf, upper and lower epidermis, palisade tissue, and mesophyll tissue compactness (CTR) of the two rootstocks were significantly decreased, while the thickness of sponge tissue and mesophyll tissue looseness (SR) were significantly increased, and the range of ‘9-1-6’ was smaller than that of M. baccata. With an extension of stress time, the accumulation of Na+ increased significantly, and the accumulation of K+ decreased gradually. The stem and leaves of ‘9-1-6’ showed a lower accumulation of Na+ and a higher accumulation of K+, and the roots displayed a higher ability to reject Na+, as well as young and old leaves showed a stronger ability to secrete Na+. In conclusion, within a certain salt concentration range, the ‘9-1-6’ root part can maintain lower salt sensitivity and a higher root-to-shoot ratio by increasing the proportion of root biomass allocation; the aerial part responds to salt stress through thicker leaves and a complete double-layer fence structure; the roots and stem bases can effectively reduce the transportation of Na+ to the aerial parts, as well as effectively secrete Na+ from the aerial parts through young and old leaves, thereby maintaining a higher K+/Na+ ratio in the aerial parts, showing a strong salt tolerance. Apples are among the most consumed fruits worldwide. They serve as an excellent source of compounds that have a positive impact on human health. While new varieties of apples are being developed, numerous varieties have been forgotten. In this article, we present the results of research on 30 old apple cultivars, focusing on both qualitative and quantitative determination of antioxidant properties, and content of total phenolics, phenolic acids, triterpenoids and polyphenols. Our analyses show significant differences in the total content of each group of compounds between apple cultivars, as well as the phytochemical profile. The richest source of antioxidants was revealed to be ‘Reneta Blenheimska’ and ‘Książę Albrecht Pruski’ varieties, but the highest amount of phenolics had ‘James Grieve’ and ‘Kantówka Gdańska’ (KG). Among studied apples KG, ‘Krótkonóżka Królewska’ and ‘Grochówka’ (G) were the richest source of phenolic acids and polyphenols, whereas G, ‘James Grieve’ and ‘Krótkonóżka Królewska’ had the highest level of triterpenoids. Based on these findings, we selected two cultivars, G and KG, for further in vitro cell line-based studies. Based on biological activity analyses, we demonstrated not only antioxidant potential but also proapoptotic and cytoprotective properties within human-originated Caco-2 and HepG2 cell lines. In the era of a dynamically growing number of lifestyle diseases, it is particularly important to draw the attention of producers and consumers to the need to choose fruit varieties with the highest possible content of health-promoting compounds and, therefore, with the strongest health-promoting properties. This research is focused on comparing the compositions of juice produced from old and commercially grown apple cultivars. We examined factors such as pH, total acids, soluble dry matter, polyphenol profile, and antioxidant activity, which impact the attributes, safety, shelf life, and nutritional value of the juice. Our analysis revealed differences between these two groups of cultivars. For instance, pH values ranged from 3.04 (in ‘Bobovec’) to 3.69 (in ‘Fuji’). The proportions of acids varied from 0.07 g/100 mL (in ‘Fuji’) to 0.19 g/100 mL (in ‘Wagener’). Soluble dry matter content ranged from 14.10% (in ‘Fuji’) to 18.50% (in ‘Kraljevčica’). We also observed variations in sugar content and composition among cultivars; for example, sucrose levels varied from 16.11 g/L (‘Fuji’) to 39.36 g/L (‘Golden Delicious). Glucose levels ranged from 4.95 g/L (‘Jonagold’) to 19.18 g/L (‘Fuji’), while fructose levels spanned from 50.78 g/L (‘Austrougarka’) to 427.97 g/L (‘Ilzer Rosenapfel’). Furthermore, old apple cultivars exhibited higher concentrations of phenols and flavonoids compared to commercial ones; we also noted significant variations in flavonol levels among different cultivars. The ‘Wagener’ and ‘Božićnica’ apple varieties had levels of myricetin measuring 0.53 and 0.52 µg/mL, respectively. On the other hand, ‘Bobovec’ stood out for its content of procyanidin B2 with a concentration of 422.61 µg/mL. When examining non-flavonoid compounds, it was found that old apple cultivars had higher concentrations of gallic acid, trans-ferulic acid, and chlorogenic acid. However, commercial cultivars showed dominance in caffeic and p-coumaric. Comparisons of antioxidant capacity using DPPH and ABTS assays clearly demonstrated the superiority of old apple cultivars. Overall, this study highlights the importance of utilizing apple cultivars for juice production. Their distinct compositions and higher antioxidant capacities contribute to potential health benefits. Preserving these cultivars for enhanced juice quality and nutritional value is encouraged. Further research could explore cultivation practices’ impact on composition and health benefits. Dwarfing interstocks play an essential role in determining the performance of fruit trees. SH40, Jizhen 1, and Jizhen 2 are widely used dwarfing interstocks in Hebei Province, China. This study examined the influence of these three dwarfing interstocks on vegetative growth, fruit quality and yield, and leaf and fruit macro- (N, P, K, Ca, and Mg) and micro- (Fe, Zn, Cu, Mn, and B) element contents for ‘Tianhong 2’. Five-year-old ‘Fuji’ apple cultivar, ‘Tianhong 2’, on ‘Malus. Robusta’ rootstock, was cultivated with SH40, Jizhen 1, or Jizhen2 dwarfing rootstock as an interstock bridge. Jizhen 1 and 2 had more branches and a higher proportion of short branches than SH40. Jizhen 2 had a higher yield, good fruit quality, and higher leaf macro- (N, P, K, and Ca) and micro-element (Fe, Zn, Cu, Mn, and B) contents; Jizhen 1 had the highest leaf Mg content in the growing period. The fruit N, P, K, Fe, Zn, Cu, Mn, and B contents were higher in Jizhen 2. SH40 had the highest fruit Ca content. There were significant correlations in nutrient elements between leaves and fruit in June and July. Comprehensive analysis showed that Tianhong 2 had moderate tree vigor, high yield, good fruit quality, and high mineral element content in leaves and fruits when Jizhen 2 was used as an interstock. Pears (Pyrus communis L.) and apples (Malus domestica Borkh.) are two of the most popular fruits worldwide. The phenolic compounds they offer are associated with human health benefits due to their antioxidant properties. Since these fruits’ by-products are not yet fully exploited, it is important to characterize them, especially in terms of their antioxidant properties. The aim of this study was to determine the antioxidant properties of old traditional cultivars, six regional pear cultivars and five regional apple cultivars grown in the Alcobaça region (Portugal). Antioxidant capacity assays were used to evaluate the antioxidant properties. Generally, the antioxidant capacity, total phenolics content (TPC), and total flavonoids content (TFC) of fruit byproducts (both seeds and peels) were higher than the corresponding mesocarp, indicating their potential as sources of beneficial antioxidant compounds. Moreover, a UHPLC-ToF-MS method was optimized and validated in order to quantify 21 distinct phenolics in these fruit samples. The analytical method’s suitability for quantifying phenolic compounds was demonstrated by an evaluation of linearity, limit of detection, limit of quantification, precision and accuracy. This method was used to determine the phenolic composition of samples of regional (local) cultivars. The phenolics in the fruit samples with the highest concentrations were phlorizin and chlorogenic acid. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to separate distinct fruit species while emphasizing their similarities and differences. Full article

Urban horticulture has to respond to several challenges, including reducing the growth vigor of the scion/rootstock combination, adapting the cultivated species/variety to the pedoclimatic conditions—more varied in recent years, and increasing tolerance to diseases and pests that cause extensive qualitative and quantitative damage to fruit production. For this experiment, 15 old apple varieties were chosen, all known and cultivated in the Banat area, which were grafted on the MM106 rootstock. Several parameters were analyzed that can be used for a relevant classification for planting them in limited spaces, such as in a private garden. Our research started 10 years ago and has already resulted in a doctoral thesis that extensively presents the data taken from the initial biological material and the first two years after grafting the trees; the research continued and is still ongoing in the experimental orchard. From the multitude of aspects studied, we have chosen to present some results related to the vigor of the scion/rootstock combination, the quality of the fruits, their content in acidity as well as the behavior with respect to diseases and pests—results that can be useful to those who want to grow old apple varieties in their own garden. Growth vigor was reduced in most varieties, but the highest influence of the rootstock on growth was observed in the ‘Bănățenesc’ variety, followed by ‘Jonathan de Munte’ and ‘Caslere’. Grafting and agrotechniques had a positive influence on the fruit mass in all cultivars, except ‘Crețesc’, with an experimental average of 163.35 g, namely 60.56 g higher on average than that of the original biological material. After grafting, the SSC was between 10.05 °Brix in the ‘Curcubătoase’ variety and 18.48 °Brix in ‘Parmen Auriu’, with an experimental average of 14.96 °Brix. The fruit acidity oscillated between 0.13 g/100 g in ‘Florănești’ and ‘Pătul’ varieties and 0.46 g/100 g in ‘Domnesc’, with an experimental average of 0.25 g/100 g. Full article

More than ten thousand apple cultivars with high variability in the quality traits and year-round availability place apples at the forefront of consumed fruits. Yet consumers and producers alike are still looking for new apple cultivars with specific quality attributes such as plant resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses as well as a high health-promoting potential. The model plants were three cultivars: a new ‘Chopin’ and an old ‘Granny Smith’, scab resistant cultivars with green peel, and a red-skinned cultivar ‘Gala Schniga’. Apple peel and flesh were analyzed separately during two growing seasons: 2016 and 2017. The total ascorbate and phenolics as well as individual phenolic compounds, such as (+)-catechin, (−)-epicatechin, chlorogenic acid, phloridzin, and rutin concentrations, proved to be highly tissue-type and cultivar dependent. The apple of the ‘Chopin’ and ‘Granny Smith’ cultivars expressed much lower skin-to-flesh antioxidant potential differences as compared to ‘Gala Schniga’. The lowest differences between tissue types were observed in the case of chlorogenic acid and flavan-3-ols, followed by total phenolics and ascorbate concentrations. Except for phloridzin, ‘Gala Schniga’ exhibited the highest differences in global and individual phenolic compound concentrations as well as total antioxidant capacity between the apple peel and flesh. ‘Chopin’ was definitely distinguished by the highest concentration of ascorbate in both the peel and the flesh and expressed a higher concentration of flavanols, especially compared to ‘Granny Smith’. In contrast to ‘Gala Schniga’, ‘Chopin’ was richer in chlorogenic acid, (+)-catechin, and (−)-epicatechin in the flesh. The total antioxidant capacity of the green-peel apple cultivars was similar to that of the red-peel one. A narrower range of differences between the concentration of antioxidants in apple peel and flesh could mean better health-promoting properties and might be related to a greater resistance to environmental stress factors. European canker, caused by Neonectria ditissima Bres., is an economically damaging fungal disease of apple. Breeding new cultivars with a high level of resistance to European canker is the main aim of apple breeding programs. Observations of symptoms in naturally infected trees were carried out in 400 apple accessions in Asturias (north-western Spain). Young and mature field planted trees were assessed under conditions highly conducive for N. ditissima development. The results demonstrated that juvenile trees (4-year-old) barely showed noticeable symptoms whereas a wide variability in the levels of resistance among accession was observed in mature trees (14-year-old). Around 28% of the locally maintained collection resulted to be highly resistant to this disease in the region. Field observations on mature trees were also compared to four rapid screening tests based on artificially induced lesions. Spearman correlation analysis using two resistance parameters revealed that none of the methods resulted in similar rankings of cultivar susceptibility as some accessions that were ranked as resistant for a given test turned out to be susceptible in the field. This study might suggest that whilst conventional resistance phenotyping techniques are time-consuming, the outcomes of this approach still seem the preferred option to assess the response to N. ditissima of apple accessions. (2) Methods: Fifteen phenolic compounds (UHPLC-MS/MS techniques), eight mineral elements (Ca, K, Cu, Mn, Fe, Zn, Na and Mg), antioxidant capacity (DPPH%) and vitamin C content in four ancient apple varieties of Tuscany (‘Mora’, ‘Nesta’, ‘Panaia’ and ‘Ruggina’), with the ‘Golden Delicious’ cultivar as reference, were analyzed. (3) Results: Ancient cultivars exhibited a superior antioxidant capacity compared to commercial cultivars. ECTC and CGA were the polyphenols that mostly characterized the ancient apples. The contents of the elements of concern, Zn and Mn, were higher in the ancient cultivars ‘Panaia’ and ‘Ruggina’, while Na showed significant low concentration in ‘Nesta’, ‘Panaia’ and ‘Ruggina’ compared to ‘Golden Delicious’. The vitamin C content also indicated that ‘Mora’, ‘Panaia’ and ‘Ruggina’ old variety had an AsA content around 10 times higher than the ‘Golden Delicious’ apple. (4) Conclusions: Underutilized varieties could be an excellent source of bioactive phenolic phytochemicals, mineral nutrients and vitamins that may offer special nutraceutical benefits compared to other fruits. The impact of plum pox virus (PPV) on sour cherry (Prunus cerasus L.) productivity has been studied by comparing the yield of PPV-infected and PPV-free fruit-bearing trees. A total of 152 16- to 17-year-old trees of nine cultivars and hybrids were surveyed in the production orchards (cultivar collection and hybrid testing plots) in the Republic of Tatarstan, Russia. Sixty trees tested positive for PPV using ELISA and RT-PCR. Among them, 58 PPV isolates belonged to the strain C and the other 2 isolates to the strain CV. For the cultivars Sevastyanovskaya, Shakirovskaya, hybrids 88-2 and 80-8, the average (2012 to 2019) productivity of infected trees was 38% to 45% lower than for PPV-free trees of the same cultivar or hybrid. No ilarviruses (prunus necrotic ringspot virus, prune dwarf virus, apple mosaic virus, American plum line pattern virus) were detected in PPV-infected trees, suggesting that reduced cherry productivity was attributed to the PPV infection. Thus, it was shown for the first time that PPV can reduce the productivity of at least some sour cherry cultivars and hybrids, and strain C isolates are responsible for crop losses. Full article

In this study, a metabolomic investigation was presented to correlate single polyphenolic compounds in apple pulp with quality characteristics such as antioxidant activity and content of phenolic compounds and anthocyanins in apple skin. Since the concentration of these compounds is influenced by environmental factors, the twenty-two apple cultivars originate from the same site. The polyphenolic compounds were analyzed by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (UHPLC-QqQ-MS/MS). The antioxidant activity, phenolic content, and anthocyanins were evaluated on the sunny and the shady sides of apple skin by spectrometric assays. In old apple varieties, the measured parameters were higher than in the commercial and red-fleshed varieties. By contrast, the profile of flavan-3-ols and anthocyanins was variable amongst commercial and red-fleshed varieties. The partial least square (PLS) method was applied to investigate the association between the skin proprieties and the metabolic profile of the pulp. The highest coefficients of determination in prediction (Q2) were obtained for compounds quantified in old cultivars. These results provided information to define the old apple varieties as a reliable group based on the pathway of the antioxidant compounds and anthocyanins content. Our results show the possibility to find cultivars with promising health features based on their content of polyphenols suitable for commercialization or breeding. Full article
