Background and Objectives: There is a global rise of public interest in integrative medicine. The principles of integrative medicine combining conventional medicine with evidence-based complementary therapies have been implemented in many medical areas, including plastic surgery, to improve patient’s outcome. The aim of the present study was to systematically analyze the application and use of additional non-pharmacological interventions (NPIs) of patients of a German department of plastic surgery. Materials and Methods: The present real-world data study utilized data from the Network Oncology registry between 2016 and 2021. Patients included in this study were at the age of 18 or above, stayed at the department of plastic surgery and received at least one plastic surgical procedure. Adjusted multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to detect associations between the acceptance of NPIs and predicting factors such as age, gender, year of admission, or length of hospital stay. Results: In total, 265 patients were enrolled in the study between January 2016 and December 2021 with a median age of 65 years (IQR: 52–80) and a male/female ratio of 0.77. Most of the patients received reconstructive surgery (90.19%), followed by hand surgery (5.68%) and aesthetic surgery (2.64%). In total, 42.5% of the enrolled patients accepted and applied NPIs. Physiotherapy, rhythmical embrocations, and compresses were the most often administered NPIs. Conclusions: This exploratory analysis provides a descriptive overview of the application and acceptance of NPIs in plastic surgery patients within a German integrative care setting. While NPIs appear to be well accepted by a subset of patients, further prospective studies are needed to evaluate their impact on clinical outcomes such as postoperative recovery, pain management, patient-reported quality of life, and overall satisfaction with care. Camellia oleifera, a woody oilseed species endemic to China, often experiences growth constraints due to seasonal drought. This study investigates the coordinated regulation of photosynthetic traits, stomatal behavior, and hormone responses during drought–rehydration cycles in two cultivars with contrasting drought resistance: ‘CL53’ (tolerant) and ‘CL40’ (sensitive). Photosynthetic inhibition resulted from both stomatal and non-stomatal limitations, with cultivar-specific differences. After 28 days of drought, the net photosynthetic rate (Pn) declined by 26.6% in CL53 and 32.6% in CL40. A stable intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci) in CL53 indicated superior mesophyll integrity and antioxidant capacity. CL53 showed rapid Pn recovery and photosynthetic compensation post-rehydration, in contrast to CL40. Drought triggered extensive stomatal closure; >98% reopened upon rehydration, though the total stomatal pore area remained reduced. Abscisic acid (ABA) accumulation was greater in CL40, contributing to stomatal closure and Pn suppression. CL53 exhibited faster ABA degradation and gibberellin (GA3) recovery, promoting photosynthetic restoration. ABA negatively correlated with Pn, transpiration rate (Tr), stomatal conductance (Gs), and Ci, but positively with stomatal limitation (Ls). Water use efficiency (WUE) displayed a parabolic response to ABA, differing by cultivar. This integrative analysis highlights a coordinated photosynthesis–stomata–hormone network underlying drought adaptation and informs selection strategies for drought-resilient cultivars and precision irrigation. Drosophila suzukii is an invasive pest of many fruit crops worldwide. Employing the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) could mitigate D. suzukii population growth and crop damage. This study evaluated the efficacy of SIT on commercial fruit, by (1) validating the quality of irradiated sterile males (male mating competitiveness, courtship, and flight performance) in the laboratory, and (2) assessing population suppression and fruit damage reduction in commercial raspberry fields. Treatment with SIT was compared to the grower’s standard chemical insecticide program throughout the season. The principal metrics of efficacy were trap counts of wild adult female D. suzukii in crops and larvae per fruit during harvesting. These metrics together with monitoring of border areas allowed targeting of high-pressure areas with higher releases of sterile males, to maximise efficacy for a given release number. The sterile male D. suzukii were as competitive as their fertile non-irradiated counterparts in laboratory mating competitiveness and flight performance studies while fertility egg-to-pupae recovery was reduced by 99%. In commercial raspberry crops, season-long releases of sterile males significantly suppressed the wild D. suzukii population, compared to the grower standard control strategy; with up to 89% reduction in wild female D. suzukii and 80% decrease in numbers of larvae per harvested fruit. Additionally, relative fruit waste (i.e., percentage of harvested fruits rejected for sale) at harvest was reduced for early, mid and late harvest crops, by up to 58% compared to the grower standard control. SIT has the potential to provide an effective and sustainable strategy for managing D. suzukii in raspberries, increasing marketable yield by reducing adult populations, fruit damage and waste fruit. SIT could therefore serve as a valuable tool for integrated pest management practices in berry production systems. Full article

People with severe mental disorders (SMD) face long-term functional impairments requiring integrated, community-based, recovery-oriented care. Italy provides two main housing models for people with SMD: private accommodation (PA) and supported accommodation (SA). This exploratory study investigated differences in recovery outcomes across these settings using the Mental Health Recovery Star (MHRS). A six-month longitudinal study was conducted within the South Verona Community Mental Health Service. Nineteen trained mental health professionals assessed 25 people with SMD (14 in PA, 11 in SA) at baseline (BL) and follow-up (FU) using standardized tools for recovery (MHRS), functioning, psychopathology, functional autonomy, and needs. Group comparisons and within-group changes were analyzed using paired and independent t-tests. At BL, people with SMD in PA showed better functioning (p = 0.040) and fewer needs than those in SA (p = 0.008). Recovery goals differed, with people with SMD in PA focusing on health and networks, while people with SMD in SA emphasized functioning. At FU, people with SMD in PA improved across all MHRS domains (p < 0.001), with significant reductions in symptom severity and unmet needs. People with SMD in SA showed targeted improvements in functioning, autonomy, and MHRS social networks (p < 0.001), with increases in met needs but non-significant changes in unmet needs. When comparing PA and SA at FU, the differences were relatively modest. Recovery is achievable in both housing settings, although outcomes differ. People with SMD in PA experienced broader improvements, while people with SMD in SA progressed in their prioritized areas, likely reflecting more complex initial needs. These findings underscore the value of aligning recovery-oriented care with the specific needs and contexts of different residential settings. Further research is needed to confirm and expand these results. Full article

Nanomaterials possess unique physicochemical properties that position them as promising candidates for environmental remediation, particularly in the removal of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) from aqueous systems. Their high surface area, tunable functionality, and strong adsorption capabilities have attracted significant attention. In this context, this paper reviews the mechanisms of nanomaterial-based POP decontamination, also providing a critical overview of the limitations and challenges in applying these methods. Specifically, issues of stability, reusability, and aggregation are discussed, which can lead to performance decay during repeated use. In addition, the practical application requires nanocomposites to enable efficient separation and mitigate agglomeration. Environmental concerns also arise from nanomaterials’ fate, transport, and potential toxicity, which may impact aquatic ecosystems and non-target organisms. When checking for large-scale application feasibility, impurities typically add to production costs, recovery problems, and general infrastructure limitations. In addition to these points, there are no standard guidelines or clear risk assessment procedures for registering a product. Unprecedented cross-disciplinary research between natural, human, and technological studies and outreach programs is needed to facilitate the development and diffusion of the results. The barriers will eventually be breached to move from laboratory success in developing the desperately needed new water purification technologies to field-ready water treatment solutions that can address the global POP contamination problem. Background/Objectives: In the context of facial surgery, particularly reconstructive procedures, sensory recovery is a critical yet often underexplored aspect of functional rehabilitation. Sensory-motor recovery can be considered a key marker of integration following reconstructive surgery. Among sensory modalities, discriminative sensitivity is typically the last to recover, making its evaluation particularly relevant. While established norms for hand sensitivity exist in the literature, there is a paucity of data regarding facial sensitivity. The objective of this study was to evaluate the discriminative sensitivity of the face in a population of healthy women aged 45–60 years. Methods: A total of 20 healthy women were included between January and March 2013. Participants had no history of facial pathologies or trauma. Discriminative sensitivity was measured using the Disk-Criminator™ device across eight facial zones. A detailed mapping of the tested areas was performed. Data obtained were compared with the existing literature. Statistical analyses included Shapiro–Wilk tests for normality, followed by Student’s t-tests for group comparisons. To account for small sample size and verify robustness, non-parametric Mann–Whitney U tests were also performed. Adjustment for multiple comparisons was applied using the Bonferroni correction (adjusted α = 0.0125). Results: The mean age of participants was 52.3 years (±4.0 years). Discrimination threshold values ranged from 2.9 to 14.3 mm. Comparison with existing studies showed no significant age-related differences in zone 2R (cheek) and zone 8 (lower lip), suggesting stable sensitivity in these regions across adulthood. However, a significant decline in sensitivity with age was observed only in zone 1R (forehead), with a p-value < 0.001 after Bonferroni correction. Conclusions: We established a reference framework for cutaneous discriminative sensitivity across eight facial zones. These norms can serve as a baseline for the assessment and monitoring of patients with facial pathologies. Furthermore, our findings contribute to a better understanding of age-related sensory changes. Full article

Background: Prehabilitation programs improve postoperative outcomes in vulnerable patients undergoing major surgery. However, current screening tools such as the Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool (MUST) may lack the sensitivity needed to identify those who would benefit most. Muscle quality assessed by Computed Tomography (CT), specifically muscle radiodensity in Hounsfield Units (HUs), has emerged as a promising alternative for risk stratification. Objective: To evaluate the prognostic performance of CT-derived muscle radiodensity in predicting adverse postoperative outcomes in colorectal cancer patients, and to compare it with the performance of the MUST score. Methods: This single-center cross-sectional study included 201 patients with non-metastatic colon cancer undergoing elective laparoscopic resection. Patients were stratified based on enrollment in a multimodal prehabilitation program, either within an Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocol or a non-ERAS pathway. Nutritional status was assessed using MUST, SARC-F questionnaire (strength, assistance with walking, rise from a chair, climb stairs, and falls), and the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria. CT scans at the L3 level were analyzed using automated segmentation to extract muscle area and radiodensity. Postoperative complications and hospital stay were compared across nutritional screening tools and CT-derived metrics. Results: MUST shows limited sensitivity (<27%) for predicting complications and prolonged hospitalization. In contrast, CT-derived muscle radiodensity demonstrates higher discriminative power (AUC 0.62–0.69), especially using a 37 HU threshold. In the non-ERAS group, patients with HU ≤ 37 had significantly more complications (33% vs. 15%, p = 0.036), longer surgeries, and more severe events (Clavien–Dindo ≥ 3). Conclusions: Opportunistic CT-based assessment of muscle radiodensity outperforms traditional screening tools in identifying patients at risk of poor postoperative outcomes, and may enhance patient selection for prehabilitation strategies like the ERAS program. This study investigated the enhancement in lipid accumulation in Chlorella sp. using non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasma as a pretreatment strategy for the production of value-added products. The plasma treatment was optimized by varying discharge times (0–16 min) using argon gas at a flow rate of 4 L/min. Lipid productivity was assessed through gravimetric analysis and profiling of fatty acid methyl ester using gas chromatography−mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The growth rate and pH of the treated cells were monitored. The findings demonstrated that the 4-min plasma exposure maximized the efficiency of lipid recovery, achieving a 35% of the dry cell weight and a 34.6% increase over untreated control. However, longer plasma treatment times resulted in a comparative decrease in lipid yield, as the decline is possibly due to oxidative degradation. The findings highlight the role of plasma treatment, which significantly boosts lipid yield and gives complementary optimization of downstream processes to improve biodiesel production. The accumulation of lipids in terms of size and volume in the algal cells was assessed by confocal laser scanning microscopy. The GC–MS results of the control revealed that lipids comprised primarily mixed esters such as 2H Pyran 2 carboxylic acid ethyl esters, accounting for 50.97% and 20.52% of the total peak area. In contrast, the 4-min treated sample shifted to saturated triacylglycerols (dodecanoic acid, 2,3 propanetriyl ester), comprising 85% of the total lipid content, which efficiently produced biodiesel. Thus, the non-thermal plasma-based enhancement of lipids in the algal cells has been achieved. Full article

The construction industry is undergoing a significant transformation due to the increasing influence of digital technology, sustainability requirements, and diverse stakeholder expectations, which highlights the need to update the existing service quality models accordingly. However, the traditional service quality models often fail to address these evolving demands comprehensively. This study systematically reviews 44 peer-reviewed articles to identify the key service quality dimensions and offer clear guidance for future research that can address the complexities of modern construction. The findings reveal that reliability, tangibles, and communication remain the most emphasized dimensions across the reviewed literature, whereas critical areas, such as digital integration, sustainability indicators, and service recovery, are significantly underexplored. This contrast explicitly links the limitations of the classic frameworks to these emerging demands, highlighting their difficulty in accommodating the industry’s growing reliance on real-time data, an environmentally friendly performance, and multi-stakeholder collaboration. Because the construction industry typically contributes 6–10 per cent of the national GDP and underpins wider economic development, inadequate service quality models can propagate cost overruns, productivity losses, and reputational damage across the economy; conversely, improved models enhance project efficiency, and thus support sustained economic growth. This review is limited by its reliance on the Scopus and Web of Science databases, which may exclude relevant regional or non-English studies. Furthermore, many reviewed articles are context-specific, potentially reducing the generalizability of the findings. Despite these limitations, this review offers an evidence-based framework that integrates advanced digital tools, sustainability measures, and diverse stakeholder perspectives. Future studies should demonstrate this framework’s efficacy and applicability in different circumstances. Full article

The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the progress toward Sustainable Development Goal 3, particularly in developing countries, exacerbating existing health disparities and creating new challenges for health systems worldwide. This study explores the role of university research in advancing SDG 3 targets in a post-pandemic context using the University of the Western Cape as a case study. Through qualitative data analysis of research titles and abstracts registered between 2020 and 2022, we applied the WHERETO model of McTighe and Bloom’s Taxonomy to categorize research according to the SDG 3 targets and indicators. This approach provides insight into which health priorities were addressed through scholarly research at UWC in alignment with the UN 2030 Agenda, particularly during pandemic recovery. Our findings indicate that research priorities largely corresponded with South Africa’s health challenges, with the highest concentration of studies addressing non-communicable diseases and mental health (Target 3.4), infectious diseases (Target 3.3), and medicine development (Target 3.b). These priorities align with the National Health Research Committee’s identified health priorities for disadvantaged communities in the Western Cape. Notably, research on mental health and emergency preparedness (Target 3.d) increased significantly during the pandemic period, reflecting shifting priorities in response to COVID-19. This study offers critical insights into how university research shifted priorities adapted during the pandemic and identifies areas requiring focused attention to support post-pandemic recovery. By highlighting research gaps and opportunities, our findings provide a foundation for developing more comprehensive approaches to health research that address the disparities exacerbated by COVID-19 while advancing the 2030 agenda. This model could inform research prioritization at other institutions facing similar challenges in both local and global contexts. Full article

This study examined post-fire vegetation dynamics following the 2020 Bighorn Fire in the Santa Catalina Mountains, Arizona, USA, by integrating pre- and post-fire airborne LiDAR data with Landsat-derived burn severity indices from 2019 to 2024. We analyzed structural and functional vegetation traits across 12,500 hectares to assess the changes pre- to post-fire, and to evaluate how these changes were influenced by the burn severity. We applied a correlation analysis to explore the relationships among the structural variables across different vegetation cover types. Non-parametric LOESS regression revealed that the dNBR was more strongly associated with changes in the tree density than with vertical structural attributes. The functional recovery, indicated by the NDVI, generally outpaced the structural recovery captured by the NBR. Densely forested areas experienced greater declines in vegetation volumes and slower regeneration, whereas herbaceous and sparsely vegetated areas showed a more rapid, but compositionally distinct, recovery. The divergence between the NDVI and NBR trajectories underscores the importance of integrating structural and functional indicators to comprehensively assess the post-fire ecosystem resilience and inform targeted restoration efforts. Background/Objectives: This study aimed to explore the functional implications of occlusal changes during clear aligner treatment (CAT) to (a) analyze occlusal changes throughout CAT and the extent of post-treatment occlusal recovery; (b) assess the relationship between post-treatment occlusion and masticatory performance; (c) investigate whether case complexity, facial biotype, and type of malocclusion influence occlusal adaptation and functional outcomes; and (d) evaluate the presence and progression of signs or symptoms of TMDs in patients undergoing CAT. Methods: This longitudinal cohort pilot study included 42 individuals who underwent CAT. Occlusion was evaluated at three timepoints: before treatment (T0), at treatment completion (T1), and three months after with night-only aligner use (T2). Masticatory performance was assessed using a two-colored chewing gum test analyzed through colorimetric software. TMD signs/symptoms were assessed using the Diagnostic Criteria for TMD [DC/TMD]. Statistical analysis used non-parametric tests. Results: A significant decrease in occlusal contact area was observed during active CAT [p = 0.016], which partially recovered at follow-up. Individuals with normal facial proportions (normodivergent) showed more anterior contacts at T1 compared to hyperdivergent individuals [p = 0.013]. Masticatory performance remained stable between T1 and T2 [p = 0.528]. A weak negative correlation was found between posterior contact number and performance score at T1 [r = −0.378, p < 0.05], suggesting that more contacts may be linked to better chewing. No TMD signs or symptoms were detected at any timepoint. Conclusions: Although CAT temporarily reduces occlusal contact area, it does not negatively impact chewing efficiency or trigger TMD symptoms. These findings support the functional safety of CAT when treatment is properly planned and monitored. Full article

Background/Objectives: The COVID-19 pandemic exposed critical vulnerabilities in healthcare systems, especially in ensuring continuity of care for patients with chronic diseases. Rehabilitation services, essential for recovery following SARS-CoV-2 infection, were among the most disrupted. This exploratory study aimed to assess Romanian patients’ perceptions of the accessibility and quality of post-COVID-19 rehabilitation services, focusing on individuals with chronic conditions. Methods: This exploratory cross-sectional study was conducted over a 12-month period in 2024. Data were collected from 76 adult patients diagnosed with at least one chronic condition (hypertension, diabetes mellitus, ischemic heart disease, cancer, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and with confirmed prior SARS-CoV-2 infection. Most participants were recruited during outpatient specialty consultations, with a smaller number included from hospital settings, all located in Bucharest. A structured questionnaire was administered by the principal investigator after obtaining informed consent. Quantitative data were analyzed using non-parametric methods following confirmation of non-normal distribution via the Shapiro–Wilk test (p < 0.05). Satisfaction scores were reported as medians with interquartile ranges (IQR), and group comparisons were performed using the Mann–Whitney U test. A mixed-methods approach was employed, including thematic analysis of open-ended responses. Results: Patient satisfaction with rehabilitation services was consistently low. The median satisfaction scores [IQR] were accessibility 1.0 [0.0–2.0], quality of services 0.0 [0.0–4.0], staff empathy 0.0 [0.0–5.0], and perceived effectiveness 0.0 [0.0–5.0]. The median score for perceived difficulties in access was 1.0 [1.0–2.0], indicating widespread barriers. No statistically significant differences were observed between urban and rural participants or across chronic disease categories. Thematic analysis (n = 65) revealed key concerns including lack of publicly funded services, cost barriers, limited physician referral, service scarcity in rural areas, and demand for home-based rehabilitation options. Conclusions: Romanian patients with chronic illnesses and previous SARS-CoV-2 infection continue to face substantial barriers in accessing post-COVID-19 rehabilitation services. These findings highlight the need for more equitable and integrated recovery programs, especially for vulnerable populations in underserved settings. Full article

This work examines how multiphase flow behavior during CO2 and N2 displacement in a microfluidic chip under capillary-dominated circumstances is affected by interfacial tension (IFT) and the viscosity ratio. In order to simulate real pore-scale displacement operations, microfluidic tests were performed on a 2D rock chip at flow rates of 1, 10, and 100 μL/min (displacement of water by N2/supercritical CO2). Moreover, core flooding experiments were performed on various sandstone samples collected from three different geological basins in Australia. Although CO2 is notably denser and more viscous than N2, the findings show that its displacement efficiency is more influenced by the IFT values. Low water recovery in CO2 is the result of non-uniform displacement that results from a high mobility ratio and low IFT; this traps remaining water in smaller pores via snap-off mechanisms. However, due to the blebbing effect, N2 injection enhances the dissociation of water clots, resulting in a greater swept area and fewer remaining water clusters. The morphological investigation of the residual water indicates various displacement patterns; CO2 leaves more retained water in irregular shapes, while N2 enables more uniform displacement. These results confirm earlier studies and suggest that IFT has a crucial role in fluid displacement proficiency in capillary-dominated flows, particularly at low flow rates. This study emphasizes the crucial role of IFT in improving water recovery through optimizing the CO2 flooding process. Full article

Coral restoration is essential for recovering depleted populations and reef ecological functions. However, its effect on enhancing fish assemblages remains understudied. This study investigated the integration of 3D-printed and natural Staghorn coral (Acropora cervicornis) out-planting to assess their role in enhancing benthic spatial complexity and attracting fish communities. Conducted between 2021 and 2023 at Culebra Island, Puerto Rico, we employed a before-after-control-impact (BACI) design to test four treatments: natural A. cervicornis, 3D-printed corals, mixed stands of 3D-printed and natural corals, and non-restored controls. Fish assemblages were monitored through stationary counts. Results showed that integrating 3D-printed and natural corals enhanced fish assemblages and their ecological functions. Significant temporal changes in fish community structure and biodiversity metrics were observed, influenced by treatment and location. Herbivore abundance and biomass increased over time, especially in live coral and 3D-printed plots. Reefs with higher rugosity exhibited greater Scarid abundance and biomass post-restoration. Piscivore abundance also rose significantly over time, notably at Tampico site. Fishery-targeted species density and biomass increased, particularly in areas with live and 3D-printed coral out-plants. Fish assemblages became more complex and diverse post-restoration, especially at Tampico, which supported greater habitat complexity. Before restoration, fish assemblages showed a disturbed status, with biomass k-dominance curves above abundance curves. Post-out-planting, this trend reversed. Control sites showed no significant changes. The study demonstrates that restoring fast-growing branching corals, alongside 3D-printed structures, leads to rapid increases in abundance and biomass of key fishery species, suggesting its potential role promoting faster ecosystem recovery and enhanced coral demographic performance.
