An Unusual Case of Membranoproliferative Glomerulonephritis: Is the Role of Vaccination in Immune Reactivation a Casual or Causal Effect?

Background and Clinical Significance: Membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis (MPGN) is a rare and heterogeneous pattern of immune-mediated glomerular injury, often associated with infections, autoimmune disorders, or monoclonal gammopathies. Idiopathic cases remain a diagnostic challenge and frequently require empirical immunosuppressive treatment. There is increasing interest in environmental triggers that may activate the immune system in genetically or immunologically predisposed individuals. We report an unusual case of idiopathic immune complex-mediated MPGN with a relapsing course potentially associated with vaccine-induced immune reactivation. Case Presentation: A 35-year-old male with no significant medical history aside from untreated dyslipidemia and active smoking presented with a hypertensive emergency and acute kidney injury (AKI). Laboratory investigations revealed nephrotic-range proteinuria, microscopic hematuria, and reduced estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). Kidney biopsy demonstrated type I immune complex-mediated MPGN with a diffuse endocapillary proliferative pattern and granular subendothelial deposits (IgG+++, C3+++, C1q++). An extensive work-up ruled out secondary causes, supporting a diagnosis of idiopathic MPGN. Immunosuppressive therapy with corticosteroids and mycophenolate mofetil led to a partial clinical response. However, after receiving multiple vaccinations, the patient experienced clinical deterioration. A second biopsy revealed persistent proliferative changes and new deposits of IgM++, C4d++, and both kappa and lambda light chains. This prompted a reintroduction of immunosuppressive therapy, which resulted in subsequent clinical improvement. Conclusions: This case supports the hypothesis that vaccine-induced immune reactivation may serve as a potential trigger for disease relapse in idiopathic MPGN. Clinicians should remain alert to environmental stimuli that may influence disease activity in immune-mediated glomerulopathies. Further research is needed to elucidate the underlying immunopathogenic mechanisms. Full article

This paper proposes a new index, the “distribution non-uniformity index (DNUI)”, for quantitatively measuring the non-uniformity or unevenness of a probability distribution relative to a baseline uniform distribution. The proposed DNUI is a normalized, distance-based metric ranging between 0 and 1, with 0 indicating perfect uniformity and 1 indicating extreme non-uniformity. It satisfies our axioms for an effective non-uniformity index and is applicable to both discrete and continuous probability distributions. Several examples are presented to demonstrate its application and to compare it with two distance measures, namely, the Hellinger distance (HD) and the total variation distance (TVD), and two classical evenness measures, namely, Simpson’s evenness and Buzas and Gibson’s evenness. With the rapid development of e-commerce, ensuring product quality on online platforms has become increasingly important, especially in developing countries where market regulations are still underdeveloped. By treating different sellers offering the same brand’s products as an industry, this study examines the impact of flagship store entry on online product quality by constructing a multiple period difference-in-difference model and conducts detailed empirical tests using full-category and large-span data from Taobao. The empirical results demonstrate that flagship store entry not only prompts the exit of incumbent sellers and deters potential new entrants due to the competition effect, but also facilitates the exit of low-quality sellers while attracting high-quality sellers as a result of a consumer-learning effect. Consequently, the overall quality of the industry is improved, and this effect is more pronounced in high-priced and durable goods industries. The findings of this study have important implications for market structure design and online quality governance in online marketplaces. Full article

Lyme borreliosis (LB) is a tick-borne infection of global relevance that remains underrecognized, hindering effective surveillance and diagnosis. This lack of awareness and the limited specificity and low antibody titters of current serological assays underscore the need for improved diagnostic tools. Here, we investigated the molecular fine specificity of IgM antibody responses to five proteins of Borrelia burgdorferi. Materials and Methods: We employed peptide arrays on cellulose support (SPOT synthesis) to screen IgM epitopes and assess cross-reactivity through databank searches and Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA). Validation was performed using ELISA and Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. Results: We identified ten IgM epitopes, of which four were classified as specific. The ELISA peptide assay demonstrated a sensitivity of ≥87.3%, specificity of ≥56.2%, and accuracy of ≥66.6%. A bi-specific peptide was subsequently synthesized and evaluated by ELISA using a panel of patient sera representing different pathologies. This result showed a sensitivity of 85.0% and a specificity of 100.0%, with significant differences in cross-reactivity between the leptospirosis and syphilis groups. Conclusions: These findings indicate that the identified peptide combinations could facilitate the development of new, highly specific serodiagnostic assays, thereby enhancing public health initiatives and epidemiological studies. Salvia officinalis is an aromatic plant of Mediterranean origin traditionally used to treat inflammatory, cardiovascular, endocrine, and digestive diseases. In this work, the ability of the Salvia officinalis extract in the treatment of gastric ulcers was evaluated, and an innovative administration system was proposed to increase the therapeutic effect of this plant. Salvia officinalis ethanolic extract was prepared and analyzed by HPLC/UV-DAD and encapsulated in a matrix based on gelatin and pectin using an emulsion–coacervation process. The prepared microcapsules were analyzed by laser particle size, optical microscopy, in vitro dissolution kinetics, and ex vivo bioadhesion. In order to determine the action mechanism of Salvia officinalis extract, in the treatment of gastric ulcer, the in vivo anti-ulcerogenic activity in rats, using the ulcer model induced by ethanol; the in vivo anti-Helicobacter pylori activity; and in vitro inhibitory activity of H+/K+-ATPase were carried out. These three biological activities were evaluated for ethanolic extract and microcapsules to determine the effect of formulation on biological activities. Ethanolic extract of Salvia officinalis was mainly composed of polyphenols (chlorogenic acid 7.43%, rutin 21.74%, rosmarinic acid 5.88%, and quercitrin 14.39%). Microencapsulation of this extract allowed us to obtain microcapsules of 104.2 ± 7.5 µm in diameter, an encapsulation rate of 96.57 ± 3.05%, and adequate bioadhesion. The kinetics of in vitro dissolution of the extract increase significantly after its microencapsulation. Percentages of ulcer inhibition for 100 mg/kg of extract increase from 71.71 ± 2.43% to 89.67 ± 2.54% after microencapsulation. In vitro H+/K+-ATPase-inhibiting activity resulted in an IC50 of 86.08 ± 8.69 µM/h/mg protein for free extract and 57.43 ± 5.78 µM/h/mg protein for encapsulated extract. Anti-Helicobacter pylori activity showed a similar Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of 50 µg/mL for the extract and microcapsules. Salvia officinalis ethanolic extract has a significant efficacy for the treatment of gastric ulcer; its mechanism of action is based on its gastroprotective effect, anti-Helicobacter pylori, and H+/K+-ATPase inhibitor. Moreover, the microencapsulation of this extract increases its gastroprotective and H+/K+-ATPase-inhibiting activities significantly. Full article

Medieval Islamic bustān gardens in the western Mediterranean played a crucial role in preserving and enriching rose diversity through the cultivation of species from the eastern Mediterranean and western Asia. These gardens, particularly in Al-Andalus, maintained distinctive rose varieties characterized by diverse flower morphology—ranging from white to deep crimson and near-black hues, including various yellow shades—and complex fragrance profiles with multiple olfactory nuances. The botanical heritage from these medieval Islamic gardens demonstrates remarkable persistence, with several of these cultivated rose species still found today in abandoned cortijos and aldeas throughout the mountains of eastern Spain. This study examines the transmission of rose culture through medieval Islamic bustān gardens, analyzing how these gardens served as repositories for ancient cultivars while introducing new varieties from eastern regions. Through examination of historical texts, iconographic evidence, and field documentation of surviving populations, we trace the continuity of medieval Islamic rose cultivation practices and their lasting impact on the rural landscape of eastern Spain. Flower scent is prominent as the leading factor determining preferences for medieval heritage rose cultivars, together with color and shape. The survival of these roses in abandoned settlements provides unique insight into the durability of medieval horticultural systems and the adaptation of cultivated species to semi-wild conditions over centuries. A remarkably well-preserved skeleton of a male Mammuthus meridionalis, approximately 60 years old, from the Early Pleistocene that is housed at the Castle of L’Aquila (Italy) exhibits a fractured left tusk with severe bone erosion of the alveolus and premaxillary bone, as well as marked spinal deformities. The cranial region underwent ultrasonographic, radiological, and histological examinations, while morphological and biomechanical analyses were conducted on the vertebral column. Microscopic analysis revealed intra vitam lesions, including woven bone fibers indicative of early bone remodeling and lamellar bone with expanded and remodeled Haversian systems. These findings are consistent with osteomyelitis and bone sequestration, likely resulting from chronic pulpitis following the tusk fracture, possibly due to an accident or interspecific combat. The vertebral column shows cervical scoliosis, compensatory curves, fusion between the first cervical vertebrae, and asymmetric articular facets, suggesting postural adaptations. Evidence of altered molar wear and masticatory function also support long-term survival post-trauma. Additionally, lesions compatible with spondyloarthropathy, an inflammatory spinal condition not previously documented in Mammuthus meridionalis, were identified. These findings provide new insights into the pathology and adaptive responses of extinct proboscideans, demonstrating the critical role of (paleo)histological methods in reconstructing trauma, disease, and aspects of life history in fossil vertebrates. New psychoactive substances (NPSs) have emerged as a significant global public health challenge due to their ability to mimic traditional drugs. Among these, mephedrone has gained attention because of its widespread use and associated toxicities. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of the structure, pharmacokinetic properties, and metabolic pathways of mephedrone, highlighting its phase I and phase II metabolites as potential biomarkers for detection and forensic applications. A comprehensive literature search was performed without date restrictions. The search employed key terms such as “mephedrone metabolites”, “pharmacokinetics of mephedrone”, “phase I metabolites of mephedrone”, and “phase II metabolites of mephedrone”. Additionally, the reference lists of selected studies were screened to ensure a thorough review of the literature. Mephedrone is a chiral compound existing in two enantiomeric forms, exhibiting different affinities for monoamine transporters and distinct pharmacological profiles. In vivo animal studies indicate rapid absorption, significant tissue distribution, and the formation of multiple phase I metabolites (e.g., normephedrone, dihydromephedrone, 4-carboxymephedrone) that influence its neurochemical effects. Phase II metabolism involves conjugation reactions leading to metabolites such as N-succinyl-normephedrone and N-glutaryl-normephedrone, further complicating its metabolic profile. These findings underscore the importance of elucidating mephedrone’s metabolic pathways to improve detection methods, enhance our understanding of its toxicological risks, and inform future therapeutic strategies. The development of compact high-speed low-pressure turbines with high efficiencies requires the characterization of the secondary flow structures and the interaction of cavity purge and leakage flows with the mainstream. During the SPLEEN project funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020, the von Karman Institute and Safran Aircraft Engines performed detailed measurements of low-pressure turbines in engine-realistic conditions (i.e., low Reynolds and high exit Mach numbers considering background turbulence, wakes, row interactions, and leakages). The SPLEEN project is thus a fundamental contribution to the progress of high-speed low-pressure turbines by delivering unique experimental databases, essential to characterize the time-resolved 3D turbine flow, and new critical knowledge to mature the design of 3D technological effects. Being able to simulate the flow and associated losses in such a configuration is both challenging and of paramount importance to help the understanding of the flow physics complementing experimental measurements. This paper focuses on the high-fidelity numerical simulation of one of the SPLEEN configuration consisting of a linear blade cascade. The objective is to provide a validated numerical setup in terms of computational domain, boundary conditions, mesh resolution and numerical scheme to reproduce the experimental results. By mean of wall-resolved large-eddy simulations, the design point characterized by an exit Mach number of 0.9 and an exit Reynolds number of 70,000 with a turbulence level of 2.4% is investigated for the baseline configuration without purge and without wake generator. The results show that the considered computational domain and the associated inlet total pressure profile play a critical role on the development of secondary flows. The isentropic Mach number distribution around the blade is shown to be robust to the mesh and numerical scheme. The development of the wake and secondary flow fields are drastically influenced by the mesh resolution and numerical scheme, impacting the resulting losses. Full article

Application of a Multi-Algorithm-Optimized CatBoost Model in Predicting the Strength of Multi-Source Solid Waste Backfilling Materials

Backfilling materials are commonly employed materials in mines for filling mining waste, and the strength of the consolidated backfill formed by the binding material directly influences the stability of the surrounding rock and production safety in mines. The traditional approach to obtaining the strength of the backfill demands a considerable amount of manpower and time. The rapid and precise acquisition and optimization of backfill strength parameters hold utmost significance for mining safety. In this research, the authors carried out a backfill strength experiment with five experimental parameters, namely concentration, cement–sand ratio, waste rock–tailing ratio, curing time, and curing temperature, using an orthogonal design. They collected 174 sets of backfill strength parameters and employed six population optimization algorithms, including the Artificial Ecosystem-based Optimization (AEO) algorithm, Aquila Optimization (AO) algorithm, Germinal Center Optimization (GCO), Sand Cat Swarm Optimization (SCSO), Sparrow Search Algorithm (SSA), and Walrus Optimization Algorithm (WaOA), in combination with the CatBoost algorithm to conduct a prediction study of backfill strength. The study also utilized the Shapley Additive explanatory (SHAP) method to analyze the influence of different parameters on the prediction of backfill strength. The results demonstrate that when the population size was 60, the AEO-CatBoost algorithm model exhibited a favorable fitting effect (R2 = 0.947, VAF = 93.614), and the prediction error was minimal (RMSE = 0.606, MAE = 0.465), enabling the accurate and rapid prediction of the strength parameters of the backfill under different ratios and curing conditions. Additionally, an increase in curing temperature and curing time enhanced the strength of the backfill, and the influence of the waste rock–tailing ratio on the strength of the backfill was negative at a curing temperature of 50 °C, which is attributed to the change in the pore structure at the microscopic level leading to macroscopic mechanical alterations. When the curing conditions are adequate and the parameter ratios are reasonable, the smaller the porosity rate in the backfill, the greater the backfill strength will be. This study offers a reliable and accurate method for the rapid acquisition of backfill strength and provides new technical support for the development of filling mining technology. Full article

Environmental protection is one of the key challenges facing mankind today. Finding out what young people, referred to as Generation Z, think about this issue is extremely important, as they will be the first to experience the negative effects of environmental degradation. Research has shown that Generation Z has the greatest hope for solutions from the technological sphere. Thus, the economic and political spheres should support the development of technology in this area. The social sphere is rated lowest, which may reflect young people’s personal withdrawal and the delegation of responsibility for the environment’s future to engineers, entrepreneurs, and politicians. It is equally important to learn what constitutes an environmental imperative for Generation Z. It is based on new energy sources, energy producers, and the state’s pursuit of a policy of international cooperation in this area, supported by national legislative activity toward entrepreneurs and citizens. Research has demonstrated the need to raise awareness among young people, with a focus on individuals treated as subjects in their interaction with modern technology. Full article

A Distributed Multi-Microgrid Cooperative Energy Sharing Strategy Based on Nash Bargaining

With the rapid development of energy transformation, the proportion of new energy is increasing, and the efficient trading mechanism of multi-microgrids can realize energy sharing to improve the consumption rate of new energy. A distributed multi-microgrid cooperative energy sharing strategy is proposed based on Nash bargaining. Firstly, by comprehensively considering the adjustable heat-to-electrical ratio, ladder-type positive and negative carbon trading, peak–valley electricity price and demand response, a multi-microgrid system with wind–solar-storage-load and combined heat and power is constructed. Then, a multi-microgrid cooperative game optimization framework is established based on Nash bargaining, and the complex nonlinear problem is decomposed into two stages to be solved. In the first stage, the cost minimization problem of multi-microgrids is solved based on the alternating direction multiplier method to maximize consumption rate and protect privacy. In the second stage, through the established contribution quantification model, Nash bargaining theory is used to fairly distribute the benefits of cooperation. The simulation results of three typical microgrids verify that the proposed strategy has good convergence properties and computational efficiency. Compared with the independent operation, the proposed strategy reduces the cost by 41% and the carbon emission by 18490kg, thus realizing low-carbon operation and optimal economic dispatch. Meanwhile, the power supply pressure of the main grid is reduced through energy interaction, thus improving the utilization rate of renewable energy. Full article

Spatiotemporal Mapping of Soil Profile Moisture in Oases in Arid Areas

Soil moisture is a key factor in the exchange of energy and matter between the soil and atmosphere, playing a vital role in the hydrological cycle and agricultural management. Traditional monitoring methods are limited in achieving large-scale, real-time observations, while deep learning offers new avenues to model the complex nonlinear relationships between spectral features and soil moisture content. This study focuses on the Wei-Ku Oasis in Xinjiang, using multi-source remote sensing data (Landsat series and Sentinel-1) and in situ multi-layer soil moisture measurements. The BOSS feature selection algorithm was applied to construct 46 feature parameters, including vegetation indices, soil indices, and microwave indices, and to identify optimal variable sets for each depth. Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), and their hybrid model (CNN-LSTM) were used to build soil moisture inversion models at various depths. Their performances were systematically compared on both training and testing sets, and the optimal model was used for spatiotemporal mapping. The results show that the CNN-LSTM-based multi-depth soil moisture inversion model achieved superior performance, with the 0–10 cm model showing the highest accuracy and a testing R2 of 0.64, outperforming individual models. The testing R2 values for the soil moisture inversion models at depths of 10–20 cm, 20–40 cm, and 40–60 cm were 0.59, 0.54, and 0.59, respectively. According to the mapping results, soil moisture in the 0–60 cm profile of the Wei-Ku Oasis exhibited a vertical gradient, increasing with depth. Spatially, soil moisture was higher in the central oasis and lower toward the periphery, forming a “center-high, edge-low” pattern. This study provides a high-accuracy method for multi-layer soil moisture remote sensing in arid regions, offering valuable data support for oasis water resource management and precision irrigation planning. Assessing the Effect of Undirected Forest Restoration and Flooding on the Soil Quality in an Agricultural Floodplain

This study investigated the impacts of land-use history and an episodic flood event on the soil quality of a riverine floodplain ecosystem, providing long-term and short-term disturbance perspectives. The study took place in the Saint Michael’s College Natural Area, which has over a hundred-year history of land-use change. Based on aerial orthoimagery, three zones (a recently abandoned farm field, a new-growth forest, and an old-growth forest) were selected that reflected different land-use histories. Two plots were selected per zone and pooled soil samples were collected from each before and after a major flooding event. Surface soil quality before flooding was often similar among the new- and old-growth forested areas (1.4 mg-P/g-soil, 6.8% soil organic matter (SOM), 0.79 humification index (HIX), and 13% Peak T) but differed from that found in the recently abandoned farm field, which had higher phosphorus levels (1.6 mg-P/g-soil), lower SOM content (3.9%), more microbial-like SOM (0.65 HIX and 17% Peak T), and drier soils. Flooding caused SOM to better resemble that of a forest rather than an agricultural field, and it lowered phosphorus levels. The results of our study suggest that episodic flooding events could help accelerate the restoration of soil organic matter conditions. Full article
