Background/Objectives: T cell dysfunction represents a fundamental barrier to effective cancer immunotherapy. Although immune checkpoint blockades and adoptive cell transfer have achieved clinical success, therapeutic resistance remains prevalent across cancer types. Thymopentin (TP5), a synthetic immunomodulatory pentapeptide (Arg-Lys-Asp-Val-Tyr), has demonstrated immunostimulatory properties, yet its anticancer potential remains unexplored. The aim of this study was to investigate TP5’s antitumor efficacy and underlying immunological mechanisms. Methods: We evaluated TP5’s therapeutic effects in multiple murine tumor models, including B16-F10 melanoma, MC38 colorectal carcinoma, Hepa 1-6, and LM3 hepatocellular carcinoma. Immune cell populations and functional states were characterized using flow cytometry, ELISAs, and immunofluorescence analyses. The potential of TP5 as an adjuvant for T cell-based therapies was also systematically assessed. Results: The TP5 treatment markedly suppressed tumor growth across caner models through strictly T cell-dependent mechanisms. Critically, TP5 promoted thymic rejuvenation under immunocompromised conditions, restoring the thymus–tumor immunological balance and revitalizing peripheral T cell immunity. TP5 functionally reprogrammed T cell states, preserving effector function while ameliorating exhaustion. Furthermore, TP5 demonstrated synergistic efficacy when combined with adoptive T cell therapies, enhancing both proliferation and effector functions. Conclusions: TP5 represents a promising immunomodulator that addresses fundamental limitations of current T cell therapies by simultaneously enhancing T cell function and reversing thymic involution under immunocompromised conditions. Our findings provide compelling evidence for TP5’s clinical translation in cancer treatment. Full article

In this paper, solvability of some inverse problems for a nonlocal analog of a pseudoparabolic equation is studied. The nonlocal analog of a pseudoparabolic equation is formed using transformations that have the involution property. Two types of inverse problems are considered. In the first problem, in addition to the solution, a function in the right-hand side of the equation depending on the spatial variable is determined. In the second problem, a function depending on the time variable is found. The first problem is solved using the Fourier method, and the second problem is solved by reducing to the integral Volterra equation. Full article

Synthetic aperture radar (SAR), as an active microwave imaging system, has the capability of all-weather and all-time observation. In response to the challenges of aircraft detection in SAR images due to the complex background interference caused by the continuous scattering of airport buildings and the demand for real-time processing, this paper proposes a YOLOv7-MTI recognition model that combines the attention mechanism and involution. By integrating the MTCN module and involution, performance is enhanced. The Multi-TASP-Conv network (MTCN) module aims to effectively extract low-level semantic and spatial information using a shared lightweight attention gate structure to achieve cross-dimensional interaction between “channels and space” with very few parameters, capturing the dependencies among multiple dimensions and improving feature representation ability. Involution helps the model adaptively adjust the weights of spatial positions through dynamic parameterized convolution kernels, strengthening the discrete strong scattering points specific to aircraft and suppressing the continuous scattering of the background, thereby alleviating the interference of complex backgrounds. Experiments on the SAR-AIRcraft-1.0 dataset, which includes seven categories such as A220, A320/321, A330, ARJ21, Boeing737, Boeing787, and others, show that the mAP and mRecall of YOLOv7-MTI reach 93.51% and 96.45%, respectively, outperforming Faster R-CNN, SSD, YOLOv5, YOLOv7, and YOLOv8. Compared with the basic YOLOv7, mAP is improved by 1.47%, mRecall by 1.64%, and FPS by 8.27%, achieving an effective balance between accuracy and speed, providing research ideas for SAR aircraft recognition. Infrared small-target detection remains a critical challenge in military reconnaissance, environmental monitoring, forest-fire prevention, and search-and-rescue operations, owing to the targets’ extremely small size, sparse texture, low signal-to-noise ratio, and complex background interference. Traditional convolutional neural networks (CNNs) struggle to detect such weak, low-contrast objects due to their limited receptive fields and insufficient feature extraction capabilities. To overcome these limitations, we propose a Multi-Scale Edge-Aware Convolution (MEAC) module that enhances feature representation for small infrared targets without increasing parameter count or computational cost. Specifically, MEAC fuses (1) original local features, (2) multi-scale context captured via dilated convolutions, and (3) high-contrast edge cues derived from differential Gaussian filters. After fusing these branches, channel and spatial attention mechanisms are applied to adaptively emphasize critical regions, further improving feature discrimination. The MEAC module is fully compatible with standard convolutional layers and can be seamlessly embedded into various network architectures. Extensive experiments on three public infrared small-target datasets (SIRSTD-UAVB, IRSTDv1, and IRSTD-1K) demonstrate that networks augmented with MEAC significantly outperform baseline models using standard convolutions. When compared to eleven mainstream convolution modules (ACmix, AKConv, DRConv, DSConv, LSKConv, MixConv, PConv, ODConv, GConv, and Involution), our method consistently achieves the highest detection accuracy and robustness. Experiments conducted across multiple versions, including YOLOv10, YOLOv11, and YOLOv12, as well as various network levels, demonstrate that the MEAC module achieves stable improvements in performance metrics while slightly increasing computational and parameter complexity. These results validate the MEAC module’s significant advantages in enhancing the detection of small and weak objects and suppressing interference from complex backgrounds. These results validate MEAC’s effectiveness in enhancing weak small-target detection and suppressing complex background noise, highlighting its strong generalization ability and practical application potential. Background: Ectropion is a common eyelid problem and is defined as eversion of the eyelid margin and typically involves the lower eyelid. The main acquired causes of ectropion include involutional, cicatricial, paralytic, and mechanical. A severe manifestation of ectropion is tarsal ectropion, where much of the tarsal conjunctiva is visible, often with keratinization of the conjunctiva. causes. Common techniques for ectropion repair include horizontal tightening of the lid with lateral tarsal strip or Bick procedure, lateral tarsorraphy, inverting sutures and the sub-orbicularis oculi fat lift. However, all surgical techniques are prone to ectropion recurrence. We review the techniques for ectropion repair and describe a novel adjunctive technique called the superotemporal skin transposition (STS), which is well suited for patients with recurrent or tarsal ectropion. Methods: The STS is combined with a lateral tarsal strip or Bick procedure. For the STS, all of the anterior lamellae of the lateral lower lid is retained. The posterior lamellae is sutured to the lateral orbital tubercle. A triangular bed of skin is excised superotemporally, and the lower lid anterior lamellae is transposed and secured with multiple sutures. The STS can be combined with inverting sutures, or skin graft for cicatricial cases. Results: We used the STS with Bick procedure and optional inverting sutures on 23 patients, 4 of whom required bilateral ectropion repair. At 1–6 month followup all patients achieved satisfactory outcomes with a well-positioned eyelid and improved symptoms. The STS had more lateral cutaneous scarring than with a Bick procedure alone, but patients did not find this objectionable. No reoperations were required. Conclusion: The STS is a straightforward and useful adjunct for patients with severe, recurrent or tarsal ectropion. Further studies are needed to determine the long-term efficacy of this technique. Background and Clinical Significance: Retrorectal cystic hamartomas (“Tailgut cysts”) are rare developmental cysts that appear in the retrorectal space, arising from aberrant remnants of the post-anal primitive gut in case of an incomplete embryogenetic involution. Case Presentation: We present the case of a 30-year-old woman with a history of chronic lower abdominal pain. Other digestive symptoms, like rectal fullness, constipation, pain on defecation, rectal bleeding or genitourinary obstruction symptoms, were not associated. During a period of 3 years, she underwent several surgical procedures for ovarian cysts, without relieving the symptomatology. A computed tomography (CT) scan showed a presacral tumor with a right pararectal development. A surgical resection of the lesion using an anterior approach was performed, with the final pathological diagnosis of a retrorectal cystic hamartoma (“tailgut cyst”). Conclusions: This case underlines the fact that retrorectal masses can be challenging to diagnose, and tailgut cysts must be taken into consideration in cases of perirectal tumors in patients with a history of multiple failed procedures and surgeries. Vehicle detection with optical remote sensing images has become widely applied in recent years. However, the following challenges have remained unsolved during remote sensing vehicle target detection. These challenges include the dense and arbitrary angles at which vehicles are distributed and which make it difficult to detect them; the extensive model parameter (Param) that blocks real-time detection; the large differences between larger vehicles in terms of their features, which lead to a reduced detection precision; and the way in which the distribution in vehicle datasets is unbalanced and thus not conducive to training. First, this paper constructs a small dataset of vehicles, MiVehicle. This dataset includes 3000 corresponding infrared and visible image pairs, offering a more balanced distribution. In the infrared part of the dataset, the proportions of different vehicle types are as follows: cars, 48%; buses, 19%; trucks, 15%; freight, cars 10%; and vans, 8%. Second, we choose the rotated box mechanism for detection with the model and we build a new vehicle detector, ML-Det, with a novel multi-scale feature fusion triple cross-criss FPN (TCFPN), which can effectively capture the vehicle features in three different positions with an mAP improvement of 1.97%. Moreover, we propose LKC–INVO, which allows involution to couple the structure of multiple large kernel convolutions, resulting in an mAP increase of 2.86%. We also introduce a novel C2F_ContextGuided module with global context perception, which enhances the perception ability of the model in the global scope and minimizes model Params. Eventually, we propose an assemble–disperse attention module to aggregate local features so as to improve the performance. Overall, ML-Det achieved a 3.22% improvement in accuracy while keeping Params almost unchanged. In the self-built small MiVehicle dataset, we achieved 70.44% on visible images and 79.12% on infrared images with 20.1 GFLOPS, 78.8 FPS, and 7.91 M. Additionally, we trained and tested our model on the following public datasets: UAS-AOD and DOTA. ML-Det was found to be ahead of many other advanced target detection algorithms. Full article

The primary motivation for this work is to develop the concept of Marshall’s quotient applicable to non-commutative multi-rings endowed with involution, expanding upon the main ideas of the classical case—commutative and without involution—presented in Marshall’s seminal paper. We define two multiplicative properties to address the involutive case and characterize their Marshall quotient. Moreover, this article presents various cases demonstrating that the “multi” version of rings with involution offers many examples, applications, and relatives in (multi)algebraic structures. Therefore, we established the first steps toward the development of an expansion of real algebra and real algebraic geometry to a non-commutative and involutive setting. Full article

Shafts with a stepped shoulder are particularly well known in the field of drive technology. In combination with a form-fit shaft–hub connection, the shaft shoulder fixes the hub on the shaft as well as being responsible for the absorption of the axial forces. With profiled shafts, there is a notch overlay in the shaft shoulder, involving the shaft shoulder and profile. If the hub is also connected with the profiled shaft, the hub edge acts as an additional notch in the shaft shoulder area. The multiple resulting notches have not previously been part of research activities in the field of innovative trochoidal profile connections. Compared to conventional positive-locking connections, such as the keyway connection or the involute splined shaft profile, the favourable features of trochoidal profiles have only been based on connections with stepless shafts without a shoulder in previous studies. Accordingly, this article addresses numerical and experimental investigations of trochoidal profile connections with offset shafts for pure torsional loading. Focusing on a hybrid trochoid with four eccentricities and six drivers, a well-founded numerical and experimental investigation was carried out with numerous fatigue tests. In addition, the influence of a shaft shoulder was also demonstrated on simple epitrochoidal and hypotrochoidal profiles. Full article

Vein of Galen aneurysmal malformation is a relatively rare disease in which failure of the median prosencephalic vein of Markowski to involute early in gestation leads to a grossly dilated deep cerebral vein with multiple arterial feeders, causing a large arteriovenous shunt which leads to high-output cardiac failure. We describe a case of a term neonate who presented to a tertiary neonatal centre on day one of life with history, symptoms, and signs consistent with perinatal asphyxia; however, in the context of worsening multi-organ dysfunction and cardiomegaly, the infant was found to have a severe vein of Galen aneurysmal dilatation leading to high-output cardiac failure. The patient was transferred to a tertiary paediatric hospital and underwent a total of four coiling procedures to embolise the multiple feeder arteries supplying the aneurysmal malformation. This case highlights the difficulties in diagnosing this relatively uncommon condition, particularly in the context of a possible perinatal insult. Full article

Reverse engineering plays an important role in the manufacturing and automobile industries in designing complicated spare parts, reducing actual production time, and allowing for multiple redesign possibilities, including shape alterations, different materials, and changes to other significant parameters of the component. Using reverse engineering methodology, damaged gears can be identified and modeled meticulously. Influential parameters can be obtained in the shortest time. Because most of the time it is impossible to solve gear-related inverse equations mathematically, metaheuristic methods can be used to reverse-engineer gears. This paper presents a methodology based on measurement over balls and span measurement along with evolutionary optimization techniques to determine the geometry of a pure involute of a cylindrical helical gear. Advanced optimization techniques, i.e., Grey Wolf Optimization, Whale Optimization, Particle Swarm Optimization, and Genetic Algorithm, were applied for the considered reverse engineering case, and the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed algorithms were compared. Confirmatory calculations and experiments reveal the remarkable efficiency of Grey Wolf Optimization and Particle Swarm Optimization techniques in the reverse engineering of helical gears compared to other techniques and in obtaining influential gear design parameters. This research deals with the issue of the recovery of the historic urban fabric with a view towards ecological transition, nowadays considered the preferable direction of sustainability for the reform of the house–city–landscape system. The massive incentives provided by the Italian government for sustainable building, in view of the post-pandemic economic recovery, risk being reduced to mere support for the real estate sector, which turns the financial transfer from the public into an increase in asset value for the private sector. Such an incentive system could contradict the original function of the city, which is to be the privileged place for social communication and the creation of the identity of settled communities. A process of property development that disregards the distribution of income favors the most valuable property, thus increasing the socioeconomic distance between centrality and marginality. The latter is a condition that often characterizes the parts of the historic city affected by extensive phenomena of physical and functional obsolescence of the built heritage, and it is less capable of attracting public funding. The increase of building decay and social filtering-down accelerates the loss and involution of neighborhood identities; the latter constitutes the psycho-social energy that helps preserve the physical, functional and anthropological integrity of the city, due to the differences that make its parts recognizable. This study, with reference to a neighborhood in the historic city of Syracuse (Italy), proposes a model of analysis, evaluation and planning of interventions on the buildings’ roofs, aimed at defining the best strategy for ecological–environmental regeneration. The model presented allows one to generate a multiplicity of alternative strategies that combine different uses of roofs: from the most sustainable green roofs, but that are less cost-effective from the identity and landscape point of view; to the most efficient photovoltaic roofs from the energy–environmental point of view; and up to the most cost-effective ones, the vertical extensions with an increase in building volume. The proposed tool is an inter-scalar multidimensional valuation model that connects the multiple eco-socio-systemic attitudes of individual buildings to the landscape, identity, energy–environmental and economic overall dimensions of the urban fabric and allows one to define and compare multiple alternative recovery hypotheses, evaluating their potential impacts on the built environment. The model allows the formation of 100 different strategies, which are internally coherent and differently satisfy the above four perspectives, and it provides the preferable ones for each of the five approaches practiced. Testicular regression occurs during the non-breeding season in many mammals. This affects spermatogenesis, resulting in decreased or arrested activity. Both lead to a decrease or cessation in sperm production. In recent years, the cellular mechanisms that lead to infertility in males in non-reproductive periods have been studied in very different species of mammals. At the start of the present century, the main mechanism involved was considered as an increase in the apoptotic activity of germ cells during the regression period. The loss of spermatogonia and spermatocytes causes not only a decrease in spermatogenesis, but an arrest of the seminiferous epithelium activity at the end of regression. Recently, in some mammal species, it was found that apoptosis is the usual mechanism involved in epithelium activity arrest, although it is firstly atrophied by massive desquamation of the germ cells that are released from their binding with the Sertoli cells, and which are shed into the lumen of the seminiferous tubule. In other species, it has been shown that not only germ cell apoptosis, but also Sertoli cell apoptosis, including decreased proliferative activity, spermatophagy or autophagy, are involved in testicular regression. Furthermore, the most recent studies indicate that there are multiple patterns of seminiferous epithelium regression in seasonally breeding animals, which may not only be used by different species, but also by the same ones to reproduce in the best conditions, ensuring their survival. In conclusion, at this time, it is not possible to consider the existence of a paradigmatic cellular mechanism in the involution of the seminiferous epithelium applicable to all male mammals with seasonal reproduction, rather the existence of several mechanisms which participate to a greater or lesser extent in each of the species that have been studied to date. An increasing number of subjects are affected by health problems related to the advanced involutional processes. It is extremely important to identify the determinants of the rate of occurrence of physiological, psychological, and social manifestations of aging. The aim was to determine how factors such as lifestyle, level of education, or severity of stressful life events indicate the appearance of aging symptoms in adult men. The material consisted of data of ethnically homogeneous group of 355 men (32–87 years), invited to the study as a part of the Wroclaw Male Study research project. The analyzed features included (1) socioeconomic status: age, educational level, marital status, and having children; (2) elements of lifestyle: alcohol drinking, cigarette smoking, and physical activity; (3) major and most important stressful life events—the Social Readjustment Rating Scale; (4) symptoms related to male aging—the Aging Males’ Symptoms. The backward stepwise regression models, the Kruskal–Wallis test, and multiple comparisons of mean ranks were used. Noncentrality parameter δ (delta), two-tailed critical values of the test, and test power with α = 0.05 were calculated. Among the analyzed variables, age was most strongly associated with the intensity of almost all groups of andropausal symptoms in men (p = 0.0001), followed by the level of education (p = 0.0001) and the intensity of stressful life events (p = 0.0108). Selected lifestyle elements turned out to be much less important (p > 0.01). Preventive actions aimed at slowing down the intensification of involutional processes, including teaching strategies for coping with stressful life events, should be implemented in groups of men with specific risk factors from an early age. The IL-6 cytokine family is a group of signaling molecules with wide expression and function across vertebrates. Each member of the family signals by binding to its specific receptor and at least one molecule of gp130, which is the common transmembrane receptor subunit for the whole group. Signal transduction upon stimulation of the receptor complex results in the activation of multiple downstream cascades, among which, in mammary cells, the JAK-STAT3 pathway plays a central role. In this review, we summarize the role of the IL-6 cytokine family—specifically IL-6 itself, LIF, OSM, and IL-11—as relevant players during breast cancer progression. We have compiled evidence indicating that this group of soluble factors may be used for early and more precise breast cancer diagnosis and to design targeted therapy to treat or even prevent metastasis development, particularly to the bone. Expression profiles and possible therapeutic use of their specific receptors in the different breast cancer subtypes are also described. In addition, participation of these cytokines in pathologies of the breast linked to lactation and involution of the gland, as post-partum breast cancer and mastitis, is discussed. Full article
