This study investigated the effects of human–calf interactions on psychophysiological and emotional responses in humans. Thirty healthy adults (mean age: 25 ± 1.3 years) participated in four distinct 3 min activities with a Holstein calf: (1) watching a 2D video of a calf (video observation), (2) observing a calf directly (direct observation), (3) feeding a calf, and (4) grooming a calf. Electroencephalogram (EEG) measurements were recorded from the prefrontal, frontal, parietal, and occipital lobes during each activity. Participants’ emotional states were assessed using the Profile of Mood States (POMS) questionnaire before and after the sessions. Results showed that relative alpha power spectra, indicative of relaxation and resting states, significantly increased during both direct and video observation of the calf compared to feeding or grooming activities (p < 0.05). Relative beta power, associated with concentration and alertness without stress, was also elevated during the observation conditions relative to grooming (p = 0.044). Furthermore, POMS scores revealed a significant reduction in total mood disturbance after calf-related activities, particularly following observation (both video and direct) and grooming (p = 0.004). These findings suggest that brief interactions with calves may promote relaxation, enhance attention, reduce stress, and improve emotional well-being in healthy adults. The results provide preliminary evidence that may inform future research on the development of animal-assisted activity programs. Full article

Background/Objectives: Botanical nootropics are increasingly sought as natural alternatives to synthetic stimulants. Mangifera indica leaf extract, standardized to the polyphenol mangiferin, has shown promise in regulating brain activity and enhancing cognitive performance. This study aimed to replicate, in an independent cohort, the acute cognitive benefits of a soluble mango leaf extract (Zynamite® S) following a previous proof-of-concept trial. Methods: In a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled crossover trial, 88 healthy young adults (aged 18–25) received either a single 100 mg dose of Zynamite® S or a matched placebo. Cognitive performance was assessed using the Trail Making Test (TMT), Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST), and Stroop Color-Word Test. Emotional states were assessed via the Profile of Mood States (POMS) at baseline, and then at 30 min, 3 h, and 5 h post-ingestion. Results: Zynamite® S supplementation resulted in the replication of previous findings, with significant improvements in mental processing speed, attention, and cognitive flexibility (p < 0.05). Notably, this trial identified a rapid onset of action, with significant cognitive and mood improvements detectable as early on as 30 min post-dose and a sustained duration of the effect with benefits observed up to 5 h post-administration. Mood assessments confirmed an overall improvement in emotional balance (p < 0.05) by reducing tension, mental fatigue, and low mood during the completion of cognitive-demanding tasks. Conclusions: These findings reproduce the acute benefits of Zynamite® S in a healthy young adult population, including a rapid onset of effects and a sustained improvement in cognitive performance and mood over a 5 h window. Purpose: The assessment of endocrine status in elite athletes is typically linked to training load and perceived stress; however, the relationship between hormonal parameters and psychosomatic and stress indicators remains insufficiently understood. This study aimed to investigate the associations between endocrine status and stress, mood, and psychosomatic status indicators in elite handball players. Methods: In a cross-sectional study, salivary cortisol (with no strict control over wake-up time), testosterone, and—in female athletes—17-β-estradiol concentrations were assessed in 584 elite handball players aged 14–35 years using ELISA. Psychological variables were evaluated using the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), Profile of Mood States (POMS), and the Health Behavior in School-aged Children Symptom Checklist (HBSC-SCL). Associations were examined using non-parametric tests and general linear models adjusted for age. Results: Hormonal and psychological variables demonstrated significant age-related trends. No significant associations were observed between hormonal parameters and perceived stress or mood disturbance (values for the general linear model (GLM) were all p > 0.05). In contrast, psychosomatic symptom severity was significantly associated with cortisol levels in male athletes (GLM, p < 0.001) and testosterone levels in female athletes (GLM, p = 0.009). Multivariate analyses confirmed the relevance of psychosomatic symptoms and indicated interaction effects between stress-related factors. Conclusion: Psychosomatic symptoms were more closely associated with endocrine status than with perceived stress or mood disturbance in elite handball players. However, these associations were characterized by relatively small effect sizes, indicating that psychosomatic symptoms explain only a limited proportion of the variance in hormonal parameters. These findings suggest that psychosomatic indicators may provide a more sensitive reflection of physiological strain and support the use of integrated monitoring approaches combining endocrine and psychosomatic measures in elite sport. In practical terms, routine monitoring of psychosomatic symptoms alongside hormonal measures may help practitioners to identify early signs of physiological strain and support timely adjustments in training load and recovery strategies. Experiencing the forest landscape in its natural state is one of the factors that positively affect people, especially younger generations exposed to stress. The study assessed the impact of listening to nature sounds and observing forest landscapes on the mood and well-being of young adults exposed to a real forest environment. The experiment consisted of two sessions, allowing us to compare the regenerative effects of observing the forest with full engagement of the senses of sight and hearing, and by listening exclusively to the sounds of nature (birdsong, rustling leaves). The relaxation benefits were compared using psychological tests, including the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS), Profile of Mood States (POMS), Restorative Outcome Scale (ROS), and Subjective Vitality Scale (SVS), administered before and after each exposure. The study involved 31 volunteers from Warsaw, the Polish capital (17 women and 14 men, with an average age of 25). A significant improvement in mood (as measured by the POMS) was observed, particularly through a reduction in Anger and Confusion. Both sessions (with and without a blindfold) significantly reduced negative affect (PANAS Negative) and increased restorative outcomes (ROS). However, no significant differences were found between full immersion (sight and hearing) and auditory-only exposure, suggesting that the acoustic layer of the forest environment plays a dominant role in the short-term psychological regeneration of young adults. In summary, these results suggest that both forms of exposure to nature have a relaxing effect on humans. However, full immersion, which involves being in the forest and viewing it, combined with listening to the sounds of nature, provides by far the most benefits for improving the well-being and mood of forest visitors. Background: Obesity is associated with metabolic dysregulation, mood disturbance, and poor sleep quality. Although dietary fiber and probiotic supplementation have both been proposed as microbiome-targeted strategies for obesity management, their independent and combined effects remain unclear. Methods: In this double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled 2 × 2 factorial trial, 56 adults with obesity were randomized to placebo, dietary fiber, probiotic, or combined supplementation for 8 weeks. One withdrew during baseline assessment, and 55 participants were included in the intention-to-treat analysis. Outcomes included metabolic syndrome-related indicators, mood assessed by the Profile of Mood State, and sleep quality assessed by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Intervention effects were evaluated using factorial ANCOVA with baseline adjustment. Results: No significant dietary fiber × probiotic interactions were detected. Dietary fiber supplementation showed selective favorable effects, mainly on HDL cholesterol and mood-related outcomes. Probiotic supplementation showed a significant main effect primarily on HDL cholesterol but did not remain significant after FDR correction. Sleep-related improvements were observed only in within-group analyses and were not supported by significant factorial ANCOVA effects. Combined supplementation did not provide additional benefits over single-component interventions. Conclusions: Dietary fiber supplementation may have selective favorable effects in adults with obesity, particularly on HDL cholesterol and mood-related outcomes. The absence of additional benefit from combined supplementation suggests that the effectiveness of synbiotic strategies may depend on the compatibility between the selected dietary fiber and probiotic strains. Background/Objectives: Although creatine (Cr) supplementation is well established for enhancing strength exercise adaptations, limited evidence exists regarding whether the timing of a single Cr dose relative to exercise acutely influences performance and related physiological and perceptual responses. This study examined whether the timing of a single dose of Cr ingestion relative to a strength exercise session influences acute strength and power performance, cognitive function, perceptual responses, and selected blood biomarkers in physically active men. Methods: In a randomized, placebo-controlled crossover design, 11 physically active men (26.09 ± 4.39 years) completed five experimental conditions: Cr ingested before exercise (CrB), during exercise (CrD), and after exercise (CrF), placebo (PL), and a no-supplement control. Participants ingested 0.1 g·kg−1 body mass of monohydrate Cr or placebo. Each condition included a standardized strength training session, where bench press (BP) and back squat (BSQ) performance was assessed as the total external load lifted (kg) across six sets performed at 80% of 1-RM for each exercise. Countermovement jump (CMJ) performance, Profile of Mood States (POMS), cognitive performance (digit cancelation test), perceived exertion (RPE), perceived recovery scale (PRS), Delayed-Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS), and blood markers of muscle damage and renal function were assessed after the resistance training session. Data were analyzed using repeated-measures ANOVA or non-parametric equivalents, with post hoc comparisons adjusted for multiple testing. Results: There was a significant main effect of condition for both BP (F = 4.91, ηp2 = 0.33, p = 0.035) and BSQ performance (F = 33.22, ηp2 = 0.77, p < 0.001), with greater performance under the CrB condition compared with PL and control (p < 0.05). A significant effect of condition was also observed for creatine kinase (χ2 (4) = 12.22, p = 0.016) and creatinine concentrations (χ2 (4) = 17.75, p = 0.001). Blood creatine kinase concentrations were greater under CrF conditions than control (p = 0.013) and PL (p = 0.041). Moreover, creatinine concentration was lower under the CrB condition compared to CrD (p = 0.033), CrF (p = 0.003), and the control (p = 0.021). No differences were observed for CMJ performance, cognitive performance, POMS, RPE, PRS, DOMS, or the remaining biochemical markers across treatments. Conclusions: Pre-exercise creatine ingestion (without loading phase) was associated with greater acute strength performance compared with other timing conditions. However, the findings are exploratory and have to be confirmed with a higher sample size and robust placebo/control structures. Full article

Aim: Female athletic performance is shaped by the convergence of menstrual-cycle timing, circadian rhythms, fatigue, and ergogenic supplementation; yet no prior study has examined these factors simultaneously in a sport-specific setting. This study investigated the independent and combined effects of acute caffeine ingestion, calendar-based testing window, time of day, and match-induced fatigue on psychophysiological, cognitive, and physical performance in trained female volleyball players. Methods: Thirteen elite eumenorrheic female volleyball players (age: 24.23 ± 4.06 years) completed a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover protocol comprising 12 sessions corresponding to all combinations of testing window (menstrual, follicular, luteal), supplementation (caffeine 6 mg·kg−1 vs. placebo), and time of day (08:00 h vs. 18:00 h). Assessments included the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Spiegel questionnaire, Profile of Mood States, Hooper Index, Stroop task, Countermovement Jump (CMJ), Modified Agility T-Test (MAT), and Reactive Agility Test (RAT), administered before and after a one-hour simulated match. Results: Significant main effects of testing window, caffeine, time of day, and fatigue state were observed across all outcome domains (all p < 0.05). Caffeine reduced daytime sleepiness (F(1,12) = 23.84, p < 0.001, ηp2 = 0.665), enhanced vigor (F(1,12) = 114.10, p < 0.001, ηp2 = 0.905), and improved MAT performance (F(1,12) = 33.27, p < 0.001, ηp2 = 0.735). The follicular window was associated with superior cognitive, neuromuscular, and mood-related outcomes relative to the menstrual and luteal windows. Exploratory higher-order interactions suggested condition-specific caffeine benefits for MAT, RAT, and CMJ, particularly in afternoon post-fatigue conditions; these patterns require replication in larger samples. Conclusions: Acute caffeine ingestion improved several psychophysiological, cognitive, and neuromuscular outcomes in trained female volleyball players, with effects that varied across calendar-based testing windows, time of day, and fatigue state. Individualized supplementation strategies incorporating cycle timing and circadian context remain investigational; prescriptive recommendations require replication in larger, hormonally verified samples before clinical or applied adoption. Background: Workplace victimization is a form of repeated and systematic psychological violence that can severely affect both mental and physical health. From a psychological perspective, it impacts mood states, defense mechanisms, and personality functioning. Methods: This cross-sectional study investigated the psychological and behavioural correlates of workplace victimization in a sample of 33 workers from various professional sectors, using a multidimensional assessment including standardized measures of personality traits, mood states, and defense mechanisms. Results: The MMPI-2 profile revealed elevated scores in Hypochondriasis (Hs: 72.00), Depression (D: 70.21), Hysteria (Hy: 67.61), and Paranoia (Pa: 68.76), indicating somatic symptoms, depressive features, and suspiciousness. The POMS showed increased Tension–Anxiety (T: 65.06), Depression–Dejection (D: 68.21), Anger–Hostility (A: 68.15), and Fatigue–Inertia (F: 65.24), alongside reduced Vigor–Activity (V: 43.18). The DMI analysis highlighted a high Reversal score (REV: 65.91), suggesting a predominant use of defense mechanisms such as altruism and idealization to cope with distress. Conclusions: In this selected sample of adults referred for psychological evaluation for suspected or documented workplace victimization, participants showed a clinically relevant psychological burden, including depressive symptoms, somatic concerns, Anger–Hostility, fatigue, reduced vigor, and specific defensive patterns. Given the cross-sectional design, small sample size, and absence of a control group, these findings should be interpreted as preliminary and cannot establish causality or the specificity of this profile to workplace victimization. Background: Emotional distress (ED) is common among patients with gynecological malignancies and is associated with reduced quality of life and suboptimal health outcomes. Total-score approaches may overlook the complex interrelationships among individual emotional symptoms. Objective: This study provides a theory-informed contextual application and empirical boundary test of symptom network analysis, organized by the Stress Process Model (SPM), to examine not only how ED symptoms cluster and connect with psychosocial correlates and quality-of-life domains, but also whether psychosocial stratification is reflected in altered symptom topology or primarily in differences in distress burden. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 415 patients with gynecological malignancies recruited from a tertiary hospital in China. ED was assessed using the Brief Profile of Mood States-Short Form (BPOMS-SF30). An exploratory three-track screening strategy was used to derive a focused 16-node set of frequent negative mood symptoms. Gaussian graphical models with EBICglasso regularization were estimated for the symptom network and for extended networks including demographic/clinical variables, SPM-related psychosocial variables, and quality-of-life indicators. Results: The ED network showed dense positive connectivity, with strong within-domain clustering and several cross-domain associations. Exhaustion, restlessness, and irritability were relatively more relationally prominent in the primary network, although centrality stability was low to moderate across models. Fatigue-related symptoms were closely connected with anxiety, depressive symptoms, and impaired quality of life. Among psychosocial variables, self-perceived burden showed the strongest conditional association with fatigue. Adjusting for demographic and clinical variables did not materially alter the core symptom network, and no significant subgroup differences in global strength or overall structure were observed across psychosocial strata. Conclusions: In this sample, psychosocial risk stratification appeared to relate more to the overall severity and burden of distress than to major reorganization of symptom topology. The study therefore contributes primarily as a theory-informed contextual application of network methods and as an empirical boundary test showing that several psychosocial strata did not exhibit major topological differences. Because the retained nodes were selected for prevalence, association strength, and selection stability, the observed prominence of fatigue- and activation-related symptoms should be interpreted as conditional on this focused symptom subset. Overall, the findings are correlational, exploratory, and hypothesis-generating. Full article

Background: Hatha yoga has gained increasing popularity worldwide and has been associated with benefits for mental health and short-term emotional functioning. Objective: The present study examined pre–post changes in mood states following a single Hatha yoga session in adult women participating in community-based exercise programs. Methods: A total of 253 adult women participated in the study. Participants completed the Profile of Mood States (POMS) questionnaire immediately before and after a single 60 min Hatha yoga session. The questionnaire assesses anxiety–tension, depression, anger, fatigue, confusion, and vigor. Repeated measures ANOVA was used to examine the changes in mood states and the potential differences between the age groups. Results: Significant improvements in mood states were observed following the session. Anxiety–tension, depression, anger, fatigue, and confusion decreased, while vigor increased. No significant time × age group interaction was observed for most mood variables. However, a significant interaction was found for vigor, indicating that women aged 41 and older showed a greater increase following the session. Conclusions: Participation in a single Hatha yoga session was associated with short-term changes in mood states among adult women, suggesting that yoga may represent a potentially beneficial community-based activity for supporting short-term mood regulation. Global aging is accelerating, with the proportion of the population aged 60 and above projected to reach 22% by 2050. In cold-region communities, the visual landscape environment is closely associated with the health of older adults, particularly showing associations with blood pressure (BP) and emotion states. However, associations between these factors across different landscape spaces and potential gender differences remain underexplored. This study utilized eye-tracking experiments to collect visual attention data from older adults in three types of cold-region community spaces: inter-building spaces, walkways and squares. The ground, buildings, trees, lawn, and the sky were identified as the primary Areas of Interest (AOIs). The Profile of Mood States (POMS) scale was used to assess emotion during walking experiments, revealing suggestive gender–environment interaction characteristics. Systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and pulse pressure (PP) were measured, and a Mann–Whitney U test indicated that DBP in community squares exhibited significant environmental dependency (U = 114.5, p = 0.004, r = 0.44). Hierarchical Linear Models (HLMs) revealed that, after controlling for individual differences, the number of fixation points on ground was independently associated (i.e., independent of measured individual characteristics) with elevated SBP (γ=0.31, p=0.011), while fixation on trees was associated with reduced SBP (γ=0.24, p=0.018). Furthermore, gender moderation effects were observed: the association between ground fixation and SBP was stronger in females (γ=0.18, p=0.022), whereas the association between sports facilities and DBP was stronger in males (γ=0.29, p=0.009). Based on these findings, evidence-based design strategies are proposed, including the optimization of ground safety, gender-differentiated planting configurations, and targeted layouts for sports facilities. These results provide empirical support for age-friendly community design in cold regions. Full article

Conventional Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) control systems primarily rely on environmental and physiological parameters, largely ignoring the critical influence of psychological states on thermal comfort. Overlooking this factor often leads to suboptimal occupant satisfaction, energy inefficiency and thus carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. To this aim, this study introduces a novel mood-adaptive HVAC control system integrating psychological feedback to decrease CO2 emissions in office buildings by reducing energy consumption and optimizing comfort. A total of 7000 thermal facial measurement records and high-resolution camera images were collected across seven mood state conditions using video stimuli and the Profile of Mood States (POMS) questionnaire to evaluate mood variations. A dual artificial intelligence system was developed: a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) for analyzing facial expressions and an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) for processing facial temperatures via thermal imaging. These models collectively predict occupant mood in real-time, and a custom-designed wearable necklace interface transmits this data to dynamically adjust HVAC setpoints. To evaluate system performance, energy consumption was directly measured in real-life operations using an energy analyzer, without relying on simulations. Results indicate that this prototype personalized mood-driven system has the potential to enhance perceived thermal comfort while achieving up to a 20% reduction in carbon emissions compared to conventional systems. This human-centered approach significantly advances intelligent building management and climate change mitigation. Full article

Major depressive disorder (MDD) lacks reliable laboratory tests for diagnosis and treatment monitoring, underscoring the need for robust molecular readouts in blood. Beyond symptom-based classification, MDD can also be viewed as a condition involving impaired homeostatic regulation across stress-responsive, immune, metabolic, and neural systems. Consistent with this perspective, altered intron retention (IR) patterns have been observed in peripheral blood in depression-related and treatment-response contexts, supporting the translational relevance of this RNA-processing layer to mood disorders. A key observation underpinning this review is that IR can function as a reversible, intervention-responsive readout of physiological state. In a pre-symptomatic stress-like state in klotho mutant mice (a premature-aging model), widespread IR increases revert toward a healthy pattern upon treatment, suggesting that IR is embedded in a controllable homeostatic layer. Against the backdrop of limited cross-cohort transferability of differential gene expression (DGE) signatures, we propose that IR provides a mechanistically grounded biomarker layer because it reports regulated RNA processing states rather than context-fragile abundance endpoints. We operationalize IR as a post-transcriptional “throttle” on effective gene output, with increased IR/detained intron (DI) states acting as a reversible brake and decreased IR acting as an accelerator that increases translation-competent mRNA supply. Mechanistic exemplars across immune, metabolic, and neuronal systems (e.g., IFNG, OGT, MAT2A, neuronal activity-triggered intron excision, and intron detention-mediated stemness/differentiation switching in adult neural stem cells) show that defined inputs can switch IR/DI states to tune output kinetics. Integrating these findings, we propose an “Intron Retention Homeostat” (IR-Homeostat) model in which cells sense deviations from physiological set points and implement feedback control of gene output through switchable IR/DI regulation. This framework positions IR not only as a robust state readout for stratification, treatment response prediction, and pharmacodynamic profiling, but also as a tractable entry point to identify the molecular sensors and mediators that couple homeostatic signals to RNA processing control. Stress states are increasing with global urbanization, but evidence on the physiological impact of urban blue-space exposure remains limited compared to green spaces. In this randomized within-subject crossover study, we examined the physiological effects of seascape viewing from the 29th floor of an office building in 44 healthy young adults. Each participant underwent visual stimulation with a seascape window view (blue space) and a blind-covered window (control) for 90 s each after a 60 s rest. Prefrontal cortex activity was recorded using near-infrared spectroscopy, and the left–right difference (LRD) in Δoxy-Hb concentrations was used as an indicator. Autonomic nervous system activity was assessed using heart rate variability, and psychological outcomes were measured using a semantic differential scale and the Profile of Mood States—2 short form. Seascape viewing significantly increased LRD, indicating left-dominant prefrontal activation relative to the control. It also increased comfort and relaxation and improved mood states. Correlation analyses showed that LRD was positively correlated with comfort and relaxation. These findings suggest that intentional window-view design, including exposure to high-rise blue-space views, represents a promising environmental approach to support occupants’ well-being and provide practical implications for window-view design and operation in high-rise office environments. Human physiology is among the most complex systems in nature, characterized by intricate structural and functional networks and rich temporal dynamics. Electrophysiological signals produced by different tissues/organs reflect physiological activity, and are inherently non-stationary, non-linear, and noisy. This work focuses on fractal analysis, a framework that captures the self-similar and scale-free properties of electrophysiological signals, which is considered to act as an output of complex physiological structures that generate complex processes. Central to this approach is the principle of ‘decomplexification’, whereby aging and disease are associated with a loss of physiological complexity. We discuss key algorithms, particularly Higuchi’s fractal dimension, which is often combined with other nonlinear measures and machine-learning models for real-time analysis of electrophysiological signals. Evidence shows that fractal metrics enable the early detection and monitoring of neurological and psychiatric disorders, outperforming traditional spectral measures. In movement disorders and mood disorders, fractal and nonlinear features show high diagnostic accuracy. Beyond diagnostics, we discuss therapeutic applications, including the prediction of responsiveness to non-invasive brain stimulation. Here, we envisage the evolution of one fractal or nonlinear measure use, to several measures applied, then use it as a feature for machine learning, and then realize that a whole cluster of biomarkers must be used to reflect the state of autonomic profile, which then can be used for ontology-based application profiles that can be machine-actionable. In addition, we discuss the fractal and fractional description of transport processes, which offer innovative improvement for a much more accurate description of physiological reality as a prerequisite for further modeling: for example, this is needed for digital twins to support the clinical translation of fractal analysis for personalized medicine. In essence, if one is trying to mathematically describe or quantify structures or processes in human physiology, fractal and fractional are the supreme and adequate approach to accurately model that reality.
