This study examines consumer attitudes and experiences related to ride-sharing services in the Western Transdanubia region of Hungary. Despite the growing global popularity of shared mobility solutions, there is little empirical evidence on regional consumer acceptance patterns in the Hungarian context. Based on a structured questionnaire survey involving 500 respondents, this research explores the relationship between satisfaction with past ride-sharing experiences and the intention to reuse such services in the future. The results reveal a high willingness to reuse among those who have already tried ridesharing, yet the correlation analysis shows that satisfaction dimensions alone are not significant predictors of reuse intention. In contrast, attitudinal factors, such as preference over other transport modes, willingness to make recommendations, and perceived accessibility, exhibit strong correlations with acceptance of ride-sharing. The findings emphasise the key role of attitudes and trust in shaping consumer decisions. The paper contributes to the literature by providing regionally grounded empirical insights and offers practical and policy-level recommendations to support the diffusion of sustainable shared mobility services. This study investigates car sharing participation in Sweden within the broader context of sharing economy platforms. Its objective is to explore the relationship between internet use and car sharing, while accounting for residential area, gender, and age. The analysis is based on nationally representative survey data collected between 2019 and 2023 (N = 8762). Initial results indicate a weak positive association between internet use and car sharing. However, this association disappears when age is considered, suggesting that age mediates the relationship. The final analysis shows that car sharing is more common among urban residents, males, and younger consumers. The findings have implications for theory, managerial practice, and policymaking. The study also addresses methodological limitations and outlines directions for future research on the behavioral, social, and structural factors influencing participation in car sharing services. Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) has emerged as a sustainable solution that integrates multiple transport services through digital platforms. Across different cities, MaaS development exhibits variation in terms of economic support, infrastructure capacity, service integration level, and long-term sustainability orientation. The complexity of multistakeholder interactions and functional components in MaaS ecosystems calls for a more comprehensive performance evaluation framework. To address this, this study proposes a holistic four-dimensional indicator system covering economic, infrastructure, integration and sustainability aspects. To address the hybrid uncertainties arising from the heterogeneous information aggregated by the proposed framework, encompassing both quantitative statistics and qualitative expert judgements, a novel rough–fuzzy best–worst method (BWM) and rough–fuzzy data envelopment analysis (DEA) approach is developed. The empirical application to six representative core cities in China reveals that high performance in “Integration” and “Economic” dimensions plays a pivotal role in determining overall MaaS performance, and coordinated enhancement across dimensions is also important. Comparative and sensitivity analyses validate the framework’s robustness, offering policymakers a reliable tool for benchmarking MaaS maturity. Full article

This paper investigates the integration of proximity theory (PT) into the management of public transport service disruptions within sustainable Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) systems, an area that is largely underexplored. PT provides a multidimensional framework for analyzing relationships and interactions within complex systems, encompassing five dimensions: geographical, cognitive, institutional, organizational, and social, each influencing coordination, learning, and adaptability. Building on this framework, the study introduces temporal proximity as an original sub-dimension of geographical proximity, forming a spatial–temporal proximity theory (PTST), which highlights the critical role of timing, synchronization, and coordinated responses in transport disruption management. To operationalize these principles, a mixed-integer programming (MIP) model was developed to optimize traveler assignments across 50 routes for 10 travelers, minimizing delays, transfers, walking distance, crowding, and CO2 emissions. Two scenarios were analyzed: one without environmental considerations and another with CO2 penalties. Results show that emissions were reduced by up to 50% for certain routes, while maintaining feasible travel times and route choices. The case study demonstrates that PTST can be operationalized as a practical tool, bridging mobility resilience and environmental responsibility, and providing actionable insights for sustainable and intelligent MaaS platforms. The emergence of advanced mobility systems, including Demand Responsive Transport (DRT), shared mobility, and Mobility as a Service (MaaS), has required a reassessment of the evaluation indicators for public transportation systems. Existing studies often address only limited aspects and lack a comprehensive, structured classification, while the unique impacts of advanced systems remain insufficiently captured. Moreover, little attention has been given to which indicators are suitable for simulation despite their growing role in transport planning. To fill these gaps, this study develops a structured classification of quantitative evaluation indicators from the existing literature, serving as a foundation for assessing advanced mobility systems. It highlights system-specific characteristics, identifies relevant indicators, and examines their correspondence with conventional ones. Furthermore, it explores the applicability of these indicators in simulation environments, offering guidance for selecting representative indicators in simulation setup, operational monitoring, and impact assessment. Finally, it highlights the potential of quantitative indicators to approximate qualitative ones, suggesting directions for future research in simulation-based evaluation. By integrating environmental, economic, and societal dimensions, this study contributes to a sustainability-oriented framework for evaluating advanced mobility systems, providing insights for both academic research and practical mobility planning. Continuous technological, ecological, and digital transformations reshape urban mobility systems. While sustainable mobility has become a dominant keyword, there are many different approaches and policies to help achieve lasting and properly functioning change. This study applies a comprehensive qualitative policy analysis to influential and leading sustainable mobility approaches (i.a. Mobility Justice, Avoid–Shift–Improve, spatial models like the 15-Minute City and Superblocks, governance frameworks such as SUMPs, and tools ranging from economic incentives to service architectures like MaaS and others). Each was assessed across structural barriers, psychological resistance, governance constraints, and affective dimensions. The results show that, although these approaches provide clear normative direction, measurable impacts, and scalable applicability, their implementation is often undermined by fragmentation, Policy Layering, limited intermodality, weak Future-Readiness, and insufficient participatory engagement. Particularly, the lack of sequencing and pacing mechanisms leads to policy silos and societal resistance. The analysis highlights that the main challenge is not the absence of solutions but the absence of a unifying paradigm. To address this gap, the paper introduces CalmMobility, a conceptual framework that integrates existing strengths while emphasizing comprehensiveness, pacing–sequencing–inclusion, and Future-Readiness. CalmMobility offers adaptive and co-created pathways for mobility transitions, grounded in education, open innovation, and a calm, deliberate approach. Rather than being driven by hasty or disruptive change, it seeks to align technological and spatial innovations with societal expectations, building trust, legitimacy, and long-term resilience of sustainable mobility. This study presents the development and implementation of an integrated survey system designed to evaluate the impact of MaaS in the context of Cairo’s rapidly evolving urban landscape. The research employs a dual-survey methodology, combining an RP household travel survey with an innovative, context-aware SP experiment focused on MaaS. The system is tailored to address the complexities of Cairo’s formal and informal transport networks and the transformative potential of new public transit infrastructure associated with Cairo’s urban expansion and the introduction of the New Administrative Capital. The paper outlines the methodological framework, including the design of the survey instruments, drawing upon established guidelines and the integration of real-world transportation data for realistic scenario generation in the SP component. While this paper primarily focuses on the development of the survey system and its design principles, it also incorporates some preliminary findings from a 313-participant full-scale survey to illustrate the potential of this comprehensive approach for understanding current travel behaviour, socio-demographic determinants of mobility, and the prospects of context-aware SP data to assess user preferences for potential MaaS offerings. Results highlight the methodological advances in survey design for developing cities and aim to offer policy-relevant evidence for sustainable mobility interventions. Full article

Technological advancements are reshaping New Mobility Services (NMS) by enhancing trip planning, booking, and payment processes, while also improving fleet management, infrastructure utilization, and data-driven decision-making. Despite these developments, challenges persist in integrating technologies into cohesive and interoperable mobility systems. This study draws insights from 163 stakeholders across the NMS ecosystem to examine both the opportunities and barriers associated with the effective integration of technology into NMS, particularly within urban and metropolitan contexts. Using statistical methods, these responses were analyzed across eight stakeholder groups to determine whether their views converge or diverge. Findings reveal a broad consensus on the technologies expected to have the greatest impact, as well as on the main challenges of integrating these technologies into NMS. Divergences arise in the perceived influence on specific mobility attributes, such as environmental sustainability, security, safety, equity, and social inclusion, and in the services considered most likely to benefit. Notably, investors express a more optimistic view across nearly all technologies, prioritizing shared vehicle services and anticipating the strongest impacts in environmental sustainability. The rest of the stakeholder groups emphasize the potential of technology to enhance modal integration and identify Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) as the NMS with the greatest expected benefits. These insights help identify strategic priorities and redirect efforts toward promoting investment in technologies with the highest potential to deliver transformative benefits across the NMS ecosystem. Over recent years, driven by intertwined economic, social, environmental, and technological factors, urbanization has accelerated at an unprecedented pace, posing complex challenges to metropolitan transport systems. This has intensified the demand for innovative mobility solutions, notably Mobility as a Service (MaaS), which promotes a paradigm shift from private vehicle ownership to mobility consumed as a service. With rapid advances in digital technologies, MaaS has gained substantial momentum, attracting significant scholarly attention for its potential to enable intelligent and sustainable transportation systems. This study aims to provide a comprehensive conceptual foundation of MaaS and its components, and to systematically examine how artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and big data techniques are applied in this domain. Following PRISMA guidelines, a bibliometric and systematic review was conducted on peer-reviewed articles published between 2020 and 2024 and indexed in the Scopus and Web of Science databases. The analysis classifies AI applications across four MaaS integration levels: basic, intermediate, advanced, and full integration. The results show that machine learning and basic optimization dominate at the basic level; blockchain and big data are most prominent at the advanced and full levels; and deep learning is applied across all levels, with a particularly strong presence at the advanced stage for real-time, personalized mobility solutions. The findings also indicate that while most implementations focus on developed countries, there is substantial potential for adaptation in emerging markets. The paper concludes by discussing key challenges in regulatory compliance, inclusivity, and the protection of sensitive user data, and outlines future research avenues for building socially equitable, intelligent, and sustainable MaaS ecosystems. To promote the sustainable development of urban smart transportation systems, this study constructs a structural equation model (SEM) based on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), incorporating extended variables including social influence, environmental awareness, privacy concerns, and service similarity to investigate users’ behavioral intentions toward Mobility as a Service (MaaS). The research systematically examines key factors influencing user adoption behavior and their underlying mechanisms, providing theoretical foundations and practical guidance for optimizing MaaS system design and policy making. Using SEM as the core analytical framework, this study employs mediation analysis, moderation analysis, and multigroup comparison to empirically examine the direct and indirect effects among variables, as well as group heterogeneity. Data were collected through an online questionnaire survey, with Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) applied to identify the differential impacts of demographic and travel behavior characteristics on users’ intentions and related psychological constructs, thereby supporting precise user segmentation and evidence-based policy interventions. Key findings include the following: (1) Social influence, ease of use, and environmental awareness boost MaaS adoption, while privacy concerns hinder it. (2) Freelancers/self-employed weaken the positive effects of usefulness, ease of use, and social influence on adoption. (3) Service similarity and ease of use effects vary significantly between single-mode and multimodal commuters. The findings extend the theoretical boundaries of TAM and provide both theoretical and practical support for the development of sustainable urban transportation systems. Full article

Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) represents a transformative shift in transportation, enabling users to plan, book, and pay for diverse mobility services via a unified digital platform. While previous research has explored factors influencing MaaS adoption, few studies have addressed users’ perspectives, particularly concerning data privacy and cyber security. To address this gap, we conducted an online survey with 320 UK-based participants recruited via Prolific. This study examined psychological, demographic, and perceptual factors influencing individuals’ willingness to adopt MaaS, focusing on cyber security and privacy attitudes, as well as perceived benefits and costs. The results of a hierarchical linear regression model revealed that trust in how commercial websites manage personal data positively influenced willingness to use MaaS, highlighting the indirect role of privacy and security concerns. However, when additional predictors were included, this effect diminished, and perceptions of benefits and costs emerged as the primary drivers of MaaS adoption, with the model explaining 54.5% of variance. These findings suggest that privacy concerns are outweighed by users’ cost–benefit evaluations. The minimal role of trust and security concerns underscores the need for MaaS providers to proactively promote cyber security awareness, build user trust, and collaborate with researchers and policymakers to ensure ethical and secure MaaS deployment. Urban areas are facing increasing traffic congestion, pollution, and infrastructure strain. Traditional urban transportation systems are often fragmented. They require users to plan, pay, and travel across multiple disconnected services. Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) integrates these services into a single digital platform, simplifying access and improving the user experience. This review critically examines the role of MaaS in fostering sustainable mobility ecosystems. MaaS aims to enhance user-friendliness, service variety, and sustainability by adopting a customer-centric approach to transportation. The findings reveal that successful MaaS systems consistently align with multimodal transport infrastructure, equitable access policies, and strong public-private partnerships. MaaS enhances the management of routes and traffic, effectively mitigating delays and congestion while concurrently reducing energy consumption and fuel usage. In this study, the authors examine MaaS as a new mobility paradigm for a sustainable transportation system in smart cities, observing the challenges and opportunities associated with its implementation. To assess the environmental impact, a sustainability index is calculated based on the use of different modes of transportation. Significant findings indicate that MaaS systems are proliferating in both quantity and complexity, increasingly integrating capabilities such as real-time multimodal planning, dynamic pricing, and personalized user profiles. Mobility as a Service (MaaS) is anticipated to revolutionize transport by integrating conventional public transport with on-demand and shared services. This innovation promises enhanced convenience, flexibility, and sustainability in urban mobility, drawing interest from both researchers and industry. However, those systems heavily rely on the collection and sharing of personal data among various stakeholders, introducing security and privacy risks. To understand the scale and scope of cyber security and privacy concerns and risks associated with MaaS, we conducted a systematic literature review (SLR) covering 87 relevant research papers published between 2017 and April 2025. Our review represents the most comprehensive examination focusing on cyber security and privacy issues of MaaS systems. Our findings reveal three themes discussed within the MaaS literature: (i) cyber security and privacy risks inherent to MaaS systems, alongside proposed solutions to mitigate such risks; (ii) users’ concerns about these risks and how they affect MaaS adoption; and (iii) laws and policies that govern cyber security and privacy aspects of MaaS systems and solutions. As such, our research serves to not only inform MaaS service providers and users but also advise policymakers and legislators on the potential risks involved and the regulatory measures required to address them. In recent years, several emerging transport modes have appeared in cities all over the world and have been widely adopted by commuters and travelers. This leads to strong growth and popularity of multi-modal transport and Mobility as a Service (MaaS) in cities. These emerging transport modes have not only received much attention from service providers and practitioners but have also attracted researchers in related communities. These are reflected in the growing number of published papers related to research issues of multi-modal mobility transport in cities. The factors that have been driving the strong growth of the number of published papers related to the emerging multi-modal transport in cities are the deficiencies of effective solution methods to accommodate the needs of users in cities with multi-modal transport modes. Although the existing literature is still deficient in offering seamless end-to-end multi-modal mobility transport services, it provides valuable sources and clues for finding the potential future research subjects/issues/directions. In this study, we attempt to identify potential research directions based on a review of the existing literature on multi-modal mobility transport. By searching the WOS database, we analyze the profile and trends of research directions related to multi-modal mobility. The results of this study pave the way for the assessment of research subjects/issues/directions under the umbrella term of multi-modal mobility transport. This review paper significantly reduces the time required for readers to identify prospective research subjects, issues, or directions without delving into the literature. Full article

This article introduces a novel hybrid database architecture that combines graph and time-series databases to enhance the storage and management of transportation data, particularly for electric vehicles (EVs). This model addresses a critical challenge in modern mobility: handling large-scale, high-velocity, and highly interconnected datasets while maintaining query efficiency and scalability. By comparing a naive graph-only approach with our hybrid solution, we demonstrate a significant reduction in query response times for large data contexts-up to 64% faster in the XL scenario. The scientific contribution of this research lies in its practical implementation of a dual-layer storage framework that aligns with FAIR data principles and real-time mobility needs. Moreover, the hybrid model supports complex analytics, such as EV battery health monitoring, dynamic route optimization, and charging behavior analysis. These capabilities offer a multiplier effect, enabling broader applications across urban mobility systems, fleet management platforms, and energy-aware transport planning. By explicitly considering the interconnected nature of transport and energy data, this work contributes to both carbon emission reduction and smart city efficiency on a global scale. Full article
