Students, particularly those in the medical field, are exposed to various stressors that can affect their health-related behaviors, including smoking habits, with implications for oral health and quality of life. Background and Objectives: to analyze the relationship between smoking, oral health, perceived stress level, and self-assessed quality of life in a sample of dental students. Materials and Methods: The cross-sectional study included 338 students, who completed validated questionnaires and were clinically examined. Lifestyle was assessed using a smoking behavior questionnaire, stress levels were measured with the Student Stress Inventory (SSI), and quality of life was evaluated using the EQ-5D-5L instrument. The DMFT index was calculated to determine oral health status. Results: Among the 338 participating students, 53.8% were smokers. The lifestyle analysis revealed slightly higher average scores among non-smokers across all domains—social (3.26 vs. 3.09), attitudinal (2.75 vs. 2.97), and behavioral (3.82 vs. 3.49), but without statistically significant differences (p > 0.25). The mean DMFT score was 12.48, with no significant differences between smokers and non-smokers (p = 0.554). The SSI total score averaged 83.15, indicating a moderate level of perceived stress, again with no statistically significant differences between the groups (p > 0.05). However, slightly higher average stress scores among smokers may suggest the use of smoking as a coping mechanism. In contrast, quality of life as measured by EQ-5D-5L showed significantly worse outcomes for smokers across all five dimensions, including mobility (78.6% vs. 95.5%, p = 0.000) and self-care (93.4% vs. 100%, p = 0.001). Multivariable logistic regression identified smoking (OR = 1.935; p = 0.047) and moderate stress levels (OR = 0.258; p < 0.001) as independent predictors of oral health status. Conclusions: The results obtained suggest that smoking may function as a stress management strategy among students, supporting the relevance of integrating specific psychobehavioral interventions that address stress reduction and oral health promotion among student populations. The incorporation of digital health into the medical curricula is becoming more important to better prepare doctors in the future. Digital health comprises a wide range of tools such as electronic health records, health information technology, telemedicine, telehealth, mobile health applications, wearable devices, artificial intelligence, and virtual reality. The present study aimed to explore the medical and biomedical students’ perspectives on the integration of digital health in medical curricula. A cross-sectional study was conducted on the medical and biomedical undergraduate students at the College of Medicine and Health Sciences at Sultan Qaboos University. Data was collected using a self-administered questionnaire. The response rate was 37%. The majority of respondents were in the MD (Doctor of Medicine) program (84.4%), while 29 students (15.6%) were from the BMS (Biomedical Sciences) program. A total of 55.38% agreed that they were familiar with the term ‘e-Health’. Additionally, 143 individuals (76.88%) reported being aware of the definition of e-Health. Specifically, 69 individuals (37.10%) utilize e-Health technologies every other week, 20 individuals (10.75%) reported using them daily, while 44 individuals (23.66%) indicated that they never used such technologies. Despite having several benefits, challenges exist in integrating digital health into the medical curriculum. There is a need to overcome the lack of infrastructure, existing educational materials, and digital health topics. In conclusion, embedding digital health into medical curricula is certainly beneficial for creating a digitally competent healthcare workforce that could help in better data storage, help in diagnosis, aid in patient consultation from a distance, and advise on medications, thereby leading to improved patient care which is a key public health priority. Background/Objectives: Effective teamwork is crucial for minimizing human error in healthcare settings. Medical teams, typically composed of physicians and nurses, supported by auxiliary professionals, achieve better outcomes when they possess strong collaborative competencies. High-quality teamwork is associated with fewer adverse events and complications and lower mortality rates. Based on this background, the objective of this study is to analyze the perception of non-technical skills and immediate learning outcomes in interprofessional simulation settings based on E-CRM items. Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted involving participants from the official postgraduate Medicine and Nursing programs at the Catholic University of Murcia (UCAM) during the 2024–2025 academic year. Four interprofessional E-CRM simulation sessions were planned, involving randomly assigned groups with proportional representation of medical and nursing students. Teams worked consistently throughout the training and participated in clinical scenarios observed via video transmission by their peers. Post-scenario debriefings followed INACSL guidelines and employed the PEARLS method. Results: Findings indicate that 48.3% of participants had no difficulty identifying the team leader, while 51.7% reported minor difficulty. Role assignment posed moderate-to-high difficulty for 24.1% of respondents. Communication, situation awareness, and early help-seeking were generally managed with ease, though mobilizing resources remained a challenge for 27.5% of participants. Conclusions: This study supports the value of interprofessional education in developing essential competencies for handling urgent, emergency, and high-complexity clinical situations. Strengthening interdisciplinary collaboration contributes to safer, more effective patient care. Full article

Introduction: Adolescents and young adults (AYAs), especially those from underserved communities, often face barriers to sexual and reproductive health (SRH). This pilot study evaluated the implementation of mobile health technologies to promote SRH care, including the integration of the Rapid Adolescent Prevention ScreeningTM (RAAPS) and the Health-E You/Salud iTuTM (Health-E You) app at a School-Based Health Center (SBHC) in Los Angeles using the RE-AIM (Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation, Maintenance) framework. Methods: This multi-method pilot study included the implementation of an integrated tool with two components, the RAAPS electronic health screening tool and the Health-E You app, which delivers tailored SRH education and contraceptive decision support to patients (who were sex-assigned as female at birth) and provides an electronic summary to clinicians to better prepare them for the visit with their patient. Quantitative data on tool usage were collected directly from the back-end data storage for the apps, and qualitative data were obtained through semi-structured interviews and in-clinic observations. Thematic analysis was conducted to identify implementation barriers and facilitators. Results: Between April 2024 and June 2024, 60 unique patients (14–19 years of age) had a healthcare visit. Of these, 35.00% used the integrated RAAPS/Health-E You app, and 88.33% completed the Health-E You app only. All five clinic staff were interviewed and expressed that they valued the tools for their educational impact, noting that they enhanced SRH discussions and helped uncover sensitive information that students might not disclose face-to-face. However, the tools affected clinic workflows and caused rooming delays due to the time-intensive setup process and lack of integration with the clinic’s primary electronic medical record system. In addition, they also reported that the time to complete the screener and app within the context of a 30-min appointment limited the time available for direct patient care. Additionally, staff reported that some students struggled with the two-step process and did not complete all components of the tool. Despite these challenges, clinic staff strongly supported renewing the RAAPS license and continued use of the Health-E You app, emphasizing the platform’s potential for improving SRH care and its educational value. Conclusions: The integrated RAAPS and Health-E You app platform demonstrated educational value and improved SRH care but faced operational and technical barriers in implementing the tool. These findings emphasize the potential of such tools to address SRH disparities among vulnerable AYAs while providing a framework for future implementations in SBHCs. Full article

Data over sound (DoS) is an established technique that has experienced a resurgence in recent years, finding applications in areas such as contactless payments, device pairing, authentication, presence detection, toys, and offline data transfer. This study introduces CardiaWhisper, a system that extends the DoS concept to the medical domain by using a medical data-over-sound (MDoS) framework. CardiaWhisper integrates wearable biomedical sensors with home care systems, edge or IoT gateways, and telemedical networks or cloud platforms. Using a transmitter device, vital signs such as ECG (electrocardiogram) signals, PPG (photoplethysmogram) signals, RR (respiratory rate), and ACC (acceleration/movement) are sensed, conditioned, encoded, and acoustically transmitted to a nearby receiver—typically a smartphone, tablet, or other gadget—and can be further relayed to edge and cloud infrastructures. As a case study, this paper presents the real-time transmission and processing of ECG signals. The transmitter integrates an ECG sensing module, an encoder (either a PLL-based FM modulator chip or a microcontroller), and a sound emitter in the form of a standard piezoelectric speaker. The receiver, in the form of a mobile phone, tablet, or desktop computer, captures the acoustic signal via its built-in microphone and executes software routines to decode the data. It then enables a range of control and visualization functions for both local and remote users. Emphasis is placed on describing the system architecture and its key components, as well as the software methodologies used for signal decoding on the receiver side, where several algorithms are implemented using open-source, platform-independent technologies, such as JavaScript, HTML, and CSS. While the main focus is on the transmission of analog data, digital data transmission is also illustrated. The CardiaWhisper system is evaluated across several performance parameters, including functionality, complexity, speed, noise immunity, power consumption, range, and cost-efficiency. Quantitative measurements of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) were performed in various realistic indoor scenarios, including different distances, obstacles, and noise environments. Preliminary results are presented, along with a discussion of design challenges, limitations, and feasible applications. Our experience demonstrates that CardiaWhisper provides a low-power, eco-friendly alternative to traditional RF or Bluetooth-based medical wearables in various applications. Full article

Biomimetic robotics and sensor technologies are reshaping the landscape of healthcare and rehabilitation. Despite significant progress across various domains, many areas within healthcare still demand further bio-inspired innovations. To advance this field effectively, it is essential to synthesize existing research, identify persistent knowledge gaps, and establish clear frameworks to guide future developments. This systematic review addresses these needs by analyzing 89 peer-reviewed sources retrieved from the Scopus database, focusing on the application of biomimetic robotics and sensing technologies in healthcare and rehabilitation contexts. The findings indicate a predominant focus on enhancing human mobility and support, with rehabilitative and assistive technologies comprising 61.8% of the reviewed literature. Additionally, 12.36% of the studies incorporate intelligent control systems and Artificial Intelligence (AI), reflecting a growing trend toward adaptive and autonomous solutions. Further technological advancements are demonstrated by research in bioengineering applications (13.48%) and innovations in soft robotics with smart actuation mechanisms (11.24%). The development of medical robots (7.87%) and wearable robotics, including exosuits (10.11%), underscores specific progress in clinical and patient-centered care. Moreover, the emergence of transdisciplinary approaches, present in 6.74% of the studies, highlights the increasing convergence of diverse fields in tackling complex healthcare challenges. By consolidating current research efforts, this review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the state of the art, serving as a foundation for future investigations aimed at improving healthcare outcomes and enhancing quality of life. Multi-Task Deep Learning for Simultaneous Classification and Segmentation of Cancer Pathologies in Diverse Medical Imaging Modalities

Background: Clinical imaging is an important part of health care providing physicians with great assistance in patients treatment. In fact, segmentation and grading of tumors can help doctors assess the severity of the cancer at an early stage and increase the chances of cure. Despite that Deep Learning for cancer diagnosis has achieved clinically acceptable accuracy, there still remains challenging tasks, especially in the context of insufficient labeled data and the subsequent need for expensive computational ressources. Objective: This paper presents a lightweight classification and segmentation deep learning model to assist in the identification of cancerous tumors with high accuracy despite the scarcity of medical data. Methods: We propose a multi-task architecture for classification and segmentation of cancerous tumors in the Brain, Skin, Prostate and lungs. The model is based on the UNet architecture with different pre-trained deep learning models (VGG 16 and MobileNetv2) as a backbone. The multi-task model is validated on relatively small datasets (slightly exceed 1200 images) that are diverse in terms of modalities (IRM, X-Ray, Dermoscopic and Digital Histopathology), number of classes, shapes, and sizes of cancer pathologies using the accuracy and dice coefficient as statistical metrics. Results: Experiments show that the multi-task approach improve the learning efficiency and the prediction accuracy for the segmentation and classification tasks, compared to training the individual models separately. The multi-task architecture reached a classification accuracy of 86%, 90%, 88%, and 87% respectively for Skin Lesion, Brain Tumor, Prostate Cancer and Pneumothorax. For the segmentation tasks we were able to achieve high precisions respectively 95%, 98% for the Skin Lesion and Brain Tumor segmentation and a 99% precise segmentation for both Prostate cancer and Pneumothorax. Proving that the multi-task solution is more efficient than single-task networks. Full article

Objectives: An aging population and declining birth rates are among the challenges that smart cities currently face and will continue to face in the near future. In light of the above, this article seeks to answer the following question: Are older people (seniors) taken into account and described in the literature on smart cities, and if so, how? Methods: To answer this research question, a systematic literature review was conducted using the Bibliometrix package in R. In the process of systematizing the publications, the authors additionally used the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) method and qualitative text analysis. Findings: The research shows that relatively little attention is paid to seniors in smart cities in the literature on the subject. Among the few publications on smart aging, the technological trend dominates, in which researchers present the possibilities of using IT and ICT to improve medical and social care for seniors, and to improve their quality of life (Smart Living, Smart Mobility). In the non-technological trend, most analyses focus on the determinants of quality of life and the distinguishing features of senior-friendly cities. Implications: There is a clear lack of a “human” perspective on aging in smart cities and publications on Smart Governance and Smart People that would provide guidelines for making elderly people full and equal stakeholders in smart cities. It is also necessary to develop practical documents and procedures that define a comprehensive and long-term urban policy for elderly adults. The analyses contribute to diagnosing current and determining further directions of research on smart aging in smart cities. The results clearly imply the need to intensify social, humanistic, and governance research on the role of seniors in smart cities. Full article

Background: Asthma is the most common chronic respiratory disease in children and adolescents, associated with high morbidity and healthcare costs. Telemedicine has emerged as a strategy to improve access to care, adherence to treatment and symptom control. However, its effectiveness in the pediatric population has not been clearly studied. Objective: To assess the clinical effectiveness of telemedicine interventions in asthma control and health-related quality of life in asthmatic children and adolescents. Methodology: A systematic review and meta-analysis were performed following PRISMA-2020 guidelines, with previous registration in PROSPERO (CRD42025251000837). Sixteen randomized clinical trials (n = 2642) with patients aged 2–18 years were included. The interventions included videoconferencing, mobile applications, web systems, interactive voice response and mobile units in schools. The outcomes were measured using validated quality-of-life (PAQLQ) and asthma control (ACT/c-ACT) questionnaires. Results: Seven studies were incorporated into the PAQLQ meta-analysis, whose overall effect was non-significant (mean difference = 0.06; 95% CI: −0.06 to 0.18; I2 = 5.7%). Five studies provided ACT/c-ACT data, showing a significant effect in favor of telemedicine (mean difference = 0.61; 95% CI: 0.32 to 0.90; I2 = 73%). Complementary qualitative analysis revealed improvements in adherence, reduction in exacerbations, emergency department visits and use of rescue medication. Conclusions: Telemedicine improves the clinical control of pediatric asthma, although its impact on the quality of life is limited. Multicenter trials with long-term follow-up and cost-effectiveness evaluation are required. Full article

Personal health records (PHRs) are digital repositories that allow individuals to access, manage, and share their health information. By enabling patients to track their health over time and communicate effectively with healthcare providers, personal health records support more personalized care and improve the quality of healthcare. Their integration with emerging technologies, such as the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), and blockchain, enhances the utility and security of health data management, facilitating continuous health monitoring, automated decision support, and secure, decentralized data exchange. Despite their potential, PHR systems face significant challenges, including privacy concerns, security issues, and digital accessibility problems. This paper discusses the fundamental concepts, requirements, system architectures, and data sources that underpin modern PHR implementations, highlighting how they enable continuous health monitoring through the integration of wearable sensors; mobile health applications; and IoT-enabled medical devices that collect, process, and transmit data to support proactive care and personalized treatments. The benefits and limitations of PHR systems are also discussed in detail, with a focus on interoperability, adoption drivers, and the role of advanced technologies in supporting the development of secure and scalable health information systems for a smarter world. Background/Objectives: Effective communication between healthcare professionals and patient caregivers is paramount in the surgical waiting area, particularly during periods of heightened stress and emotional vulnerability. Globally, communication practices exhibit considerable variability, from traditional face-to-face interactions to integrating advanced digital technologies. Despite innovations, a comprehensive understanding of the impact of diverse communication strategies on patient caregiver satisfaction remains underdeveloped. This scoping review was designed to systematically map the existing literature on healthcare communication practices and identify strategies that may influence satisfaction among patient caregivers. Methods: A thorough search of multiple databases—Scopus, PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, ProQuest, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, and clinical trial registries—was conducted. Only studies published in English or those for which an English full text was accessible were included. Eligible studies were those undertaken in hospital settings, including operating theaters, surgical units, surgical waiting areas, postoperative intensive care units, emergency departments, and other clinical areas focusing on patient caregivers. The review adhered to the methodological framework recommended by the Joanna Briggs Institute for scoping reviews and was reported following the most recent PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Results: Ultimately, five studies met the inclusion criteria. The selection process involved a structured search utilizing Medical Subject Headings (MeSH), keywords, and index terms, supplemented by manual reference list screening. Initial screening was performed based on titles and abstracts, followed by full-text evaluation using a standardized selection form. Data extraction focused on the communication methods, study designs, and outcomes related to patient caregiver satisfaction. The findings are synthesized narratively and presented through tables and figures, offering a comprehensive overview of global communication practices and their influence on patient caregiver satisfaction in surgical environments. Across the five included studies, digital communication interventions such as SMS, mobile apps, or video updates reported improved patient caregiver satisfaction (e.g., 70.8% in Canada and 97% in Switzerland) and also reduced patient caregiver anxiety (e.g., STAI score ≥ 44) in 74.2% of Ethiopian patient caregivers. Worldwide evidence highlights the practical importance of tailored digital communication practices to support providing timely and accessible information to patient caregivers, while also revealing gaps linked to insurance status, digital literacy, and various communication approaches in healthcare systems. Conclusions: The five studies included showed considerable variation in communication practices across surgical settings. The main findings reveal that structured, timely, and transparent communication, mainly via digital tools such as SMS updates and mobile applications, enhanced patient caregiver satisfaction and alleviated their emotional distress too. Nevertheless, gaps were identified in postoperative communication, and challenges, such as technological accessibility, digital literacy skills of patient caregivers, and inconsistent methods for measuring satisfaction outcomes, were noted across studies. This scoping review identified the different types of healthcare communication practices adopted globally in surgical care settings and also demonstrated their influence on patient caregiver satisfaction. Traditional and digital communication practices both have their significant impact on patient caregiver experiences in surgical healthcare settings, focusing more on timely and consistent real-time updates and culturally sensitive information. Addressing the existing communication gaps and having tailored communication approaches to specific contexts may lead to improved patient caregiver support and surgical outcomes. Full article

The Farmworker Family Health Program (FWFHP) annually supports 600 farmworkers in connectivity-challenged rural areas. Traditional paper-based data collection poses validity concerns, prompting a pilot of direct data entry using tablets and satellite internet to enhance efficiency. The purpose of this article is to describe, using the TIDier checklist, a real-time, live data-entry EMR intervention made possible by satellite internet. Utilizing a customized REDCap database, direct data entry occurred through tablets and satellite internet. Patients received a unique medical record number (MRN) at the mobile health clinic, with an interprofessional team providing care. Medication data, captured in REDCap before the mobile pharmacy visit, exhibited minimal defects at 6.9% of 319 prescriptions. To enhance data collection efficiency, strategies such as limiting free text variables and pre-selecting options were employed. Adequate infrastructure, including tablets with keyboards and barcode scanners, ensured seamless data capture. Wi-Fi extenders improved connectivity in open areas, while backup paper forms were crucial during connectivity disruptions. These practices contributed to enhanced data accuracy. Real-time data entry in connectivity-limited settings is viable. Replacing paper-based methods streamlines healthcare provision, allowing timely collection of occupational and environmental health metrics. The initiative stands as a scalable model for healthcare accessibility, addressing unique challenges in vulnerable communities. Full article

Objectives: This study evaluated the effectiveness of three-dimensional (3D) navigated transsacral screw fixation in patients with sacral insufficiency fractures (SIF) who experienced inadequate mobilization after conservative management. Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 53 patients (mean [±standard deviation] age 78.7 [±10.8] years; range 43.7–92.4; 81.1% female) with sacral insufficiency fractures confirmed by computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging. Documented osteoporosis was present in 28 (52.8%) of these patients. All had failed conservative management due to persistent sacral pain or inability to mobilize. Therefore, they underwent 3D-navigated transsacral screw fixation. We collected data on demographics, fracture classification (FFP system), pain levels (Visual Analog Scale [VAS]), opioid consumption, time to mobilization, and length of hospital stay. Clinical outcomes were recorded at discharge, 1 month, and 3 months post-op; telephone interviews were conducted between 1 January and 28 February 2024 to assess longer-term pain relief and functional status. Results: Using the fragility fractures of the pelvis (FFP) classification, 60.8% of patients had FFP IIa fractures, 11.8% had FFP IIc, and 21.6% had FFP IVb. Two transsacral screws were placed in 34.0% of cases and three in 38.0%. We observed significant postoperative pain reduction—median (interquartile range [IQR]) VAS-at-rest decreased from 5 (4) preoperatively to 2 (2) at discharge and 0 (1) at 3 months (p < 0.001)—along with reduced opioid use (from 92.5% of patients on the immediate postoperative day to 45.0% at 3 months, p = 0.003). Early mobilization was achieved in 96.2% of patients. The mean hospital stay was 11.7 ± 5.1 days (95% confidence interval [CI]: 10.3–13.2; range 3–25 days), with the few outlier cases (>21 days) attributable to medical complications or delayed rehabilitation placement. The overall complication rate was low (7.5%, predominantly minor wound issues), and the 3-month reoperation rate was 7.7%. Conclusions: The 3D-navigated transsacral screw fixation is a minimally invasive and effective approach for managing sacral insufficiency fractures. It provides substantial pain relief, enables early mobilization, and demonstrates a low complication rate at 3 months. This technique shows promise in improving short-term outcomes for patients who do not respond to conservative care, regardless of osteoporosis status, although further research is needed to evaluate long-term fracture healing and functional recovery. Background/Objectives: With the rising prevalence of chronic diseases and an aging population, the incidence of stroke is continuously increasing, which leads to higher medical costs. Stroke carries a high risk of recurrence, necessitating ongoing self-care and lifestyle changes, for which education is crucial. The aim of this study is to identify the ICT utilization education needs, mobile health literacy, and self-care education needs of stroke patients and confirm the differences in mobile health literacy and self-care education needs according to ICT utilization to establish a basis for self-care intervention. Methods: The study included 100 stroke patients diagnosed at three general hospitals or higher in City C, hospitalized or visiting neurology and neurosurgery outpatient clinics. A survey was conducted from 7 July 2023 to 30 May 2024. The survey cites computers, the Internet, live broadcasting technology, recorded broadcasting technology, and telephony as examples of ICTs. The gathered data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-tests, one-way ANOVA, and the Pearson correlation coefficient. Results: The final analysis included 100 people, with 64 participants being men and an average age of 57.75 ± 12.30 years. Self-care education needs showed no significant differences based on general or disease-related characteristics. Many patients could use smart devices but experienced difficulties in searching for information. The main reasons for using smart devices included acquiring disease-related information and accessing resources without time limitations. The use of ICT services that provide disease-related information was low, 70% of participants were willing to use them in the future. Additionally, they preferred doctor-led education sessions once a month, lasting no longer than 30 min each. Mobile health literacy was significantly higher among those willing to use ICT services. Conclusions: Mobile health literacy was significantly higher in the group willing to use ICT services than in the group unwilling. Self-care education needs were both highly important and necessary in the group willing to utilize ICT, but no statistically significant difference was found. Full article

Background: Transforaminal endoscopic lumbar discectomy (TELD) is a minimally invasive and popular surgical method for the treatment of lumbar disc herniation. Although TELD offers favourable outcomes and enables fast recovery, some patients experience rebound pain and transient postoperative pain, which can delay rehabilitation and decrease patient satisfaction. Methods: This narrative review was conducted based on a comprehensive literature search of the MEDLINE database, supplemented by the author’s clinical experience. Relevant articles were identified using the keywords “rebound pain” and “transforaminal endoscopic lumbar discectomy” or “percutaneous endoscopic lumbar discectomy”. A thorough examination of rebound pain after TELD was performed by reviewing what has currently been published about its clinical traits. It was also compared with what could be observed in open lumbar discectomy and proposed preventive measures. Results: Rebound pain typically occurs within 2 weeks postoperatively and resolves spontaneously within 3 weeks. The proposed pathologies include inflammatory edema, transient ischemia, neural hypersensitivity, and increased pressure inside the disc. Risk factors include early unreasonable activity, incomplete release, and psychological predispositions. Rebound pain must be distinguished from recurrent herniation. Prevention strategies include adequate decompression, minimal neural irritation, postoperative medications, and early mobilization protocols. Conclusions: Rebound pain after TELD is self-limiting but has a clinical effect that may delay timely rehabilitation and raise concerns for surgeons and patients. Awareness and early recognition can enhance postoperative care and optimize clinical outcomes after TELD. Full article
