Traditional white canes offer a limited perception range, whereas end-to-end visual models face challenges in real-time deployment on edge devices. To address these limitations, this paper proposes a lightweight real-time assistive system that integrates geometric topology reconstruction with state-adaptive warning logic. The system utilizes YOLOv9 to extract discrete semantic primitives of tactile paving. It constructs a dual-branch perception framework based on Median Absolute Deviation and the Minimum Spanning Tree algorithm to analyze the topological structure of tactile paving. For complex intersections characterized by warning indicators, a one-dimensional connectivity clustering algorithm based on longitudinal topology is proposed. It generates accurate macroscopic feasible directional prompts under field-of-view boundary constraints. Additionally, a hierarchical scheduling framework dynamically orchestrates scenario-specific finite state machines to enable continuous dynamic interaction across typical high-risk scenarios. Evaluated on a custom real-world dataset, the system achieves a 95.21% frame-level comprehensive accuracy for straight-path deviation correction and intersection directional prompting. Dynamic temporal stress tests confirm the temporal stability and logical coherence of state transitions. Furthermore, latency evaluations demonstrate the logic layer’s minimal computational overhead, proving its theoretical feasibility for real-time edge deployment. This approach provides an effective, low-latency solution for delivering directional prompts and hazard warnings to visually impaired users. Full article

The integration of Soft Open Points (SOPs) into distribution networks has been an essential method for enhancing operational flexibility and efficiency. But simultaneous optimization of network reconfiguration and SOP scheduling constitutes a difficult mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problem that is likely to suffer from premature convergence with standard metaheuristic solvers, particularly in large power networks. This paper proposes a novel hybrid algorithm, hTLBO–CO, which synergistically integrates the exploitative capability of Teaching–Learning-Based Optimization (TLBO) with the explorative capability of the Cheetah Optimizer (CO). One of the notable contributions of our framework is an in-depth problem formulation that enables SOP locations on both tie and sectionalizing switches with an efficient constraint-handling scheme, preserving topo-logical feasibility through a minimum spanning tree repair scheme. The evolved hTLBO–CO algorithm is systematically validated across IEEE 33-, 69-, and 119-bus test feeders with differential operational scenarios. Results indicate consistent dominance over established metaheuristics (TLBO, CO, PSO, JAYA), showing significant efficiency improvement in power loss minimization, voltage profile enhancement, and convergence rate. Remarkably, in a situation with a large-scale 119-bus power grid, hTLBO–CO registered a significant 50.30% loss reduction in the single-objective reconfiguration-only scheme, beating existing state-of-the-art approaches by over 15 percentage points. These findings, further substantiated by comprehensive statistical and multi-objective analyses, confirm the proposed framework’s superiority, robustness, and scalability, establishing hTLBO–CO as a robust computational tool for the advanced optimization of future distribution networks. The global push for electrification and decarbonization has sharply increased demand for critical raw materials—especially lithium and copper—heightening financial and strategic pressures on firms that lead these supply chains. Yet, the systemic financial risks arising from inter-firm interdependencies in this sector remain largely unexplored. This article presents a novel distance-based network framework to analyze systemic risk among the world’s top 15 lithium and copper producers (2020–2024). Firms are represented through standardized vectors of profitability and risk indicators (liquidity–solvency), from which we construct a two-layer similarity network using Euclidean distances. Graph-theoretic tools—including Minimum Spanning Tree, eigenvector centrality, modularity detection, and contagion simulations—reveal the structural properties and transmission pathways of financial shocks. The results show a robust-yet-fragile topology: while stable under minor perturbations, the network is highly vulnerable to failures of central firms. These findings highlight the utility of distance-based network models in uncovering hidden fragilities in critical commodity sectors, offering actionable insights for macroprudential regulators, investors, and corporate risk managers amid growing geopolitical and financial entanglement. Investigating the stability of and fluctuations in the energy market has long been of interest to researchers and financial market participants. This study aimed to analyze the Chinese energy market, focusing on its volatility and response to financial tensions. For this purpose, data from eight major financial companies, which were selected based on their market share in Shanghai’s and Shenzhen’s financial markets, were collected from January 2014 to December 2023. In this study, stock prices and trading volumes were used as the key variables to build bootstrap-based minimum spanning trees (BMSTs) using ratio mutual information (RMI). Then, using the sliding window procedure, the major network characteristics were derived to create an anomaly-detection tool using the multivariate exponentially weighted moving average (MEWMA), along with the Brent crude oil price index as a benchmark and a global oil price indicator. This framework’s stability was evaluated through stress testing with five scenarios designed for this purpose. The results demonstrate that during periods of high oil price volatility, such as during the turbulence in the stock market in 2015 and the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the network topologies became more centralized, which shows that the market’s instability increased. This framework successfully identifies anomalies and proves to be a valuable tool for market players and policymakers in evaluating companies that are active in the energy sector and predicting possible instabilities, which could be useful in monitoring financial markets and improving decision-making processes in the energy sector. In addition, the integration of other macroeconomic factors into this field could strengthen the identification of anomalies and be considered a field for possible research. Full article

Political events play a significant role in exerting their influence on financial markets globally. This paper aims to investigate the long term effect of Brexit on European stock markets using Complex Network methods as a starting point. The media has heavily emphasized the connection between this major political event and its economic and financial impact. To analyse this, we created two samples of companies based on the geographical allocation of their revenues to the UK. The first sample consists of companies that are either British or financially linked to the United Kingdom. The second sample serves as a control group and includes other European companies that are conveniently matched in terms of economic sector and firm size to those in the first sample. Each analysis is repeated over three non-overlapping periods: before the 2016 Referendum, between the Referendum and the 2019 General Elections, and after the 2019 General Elections. After an event study aimed at verifying the short-term response of idiosyncratic daily returns to the referendum result, we analysed the topological evolution of the networks through the MST (Minimum Spanning Trees) of the various samples. Finally, after the computation of the centrality measures pertaining to each network, our attention was directed towards the examination of the persistence of the levels of degree and eigenvector centralities over time. Our target was the investigation on whether the events that determined the evolution of the MST had also brought about structural modifications to the centrality of the most connected companies within the network. The findings demonstrate the unexpected impact of the referendum outcome, which is more noticeable on European equities compared to those of the UK, and the lack of influence from the elections that marked the beginning of the hard Brexit phase in 2019. The modifications in the MST indicate a restructuring of the network of British companies, particularly evident in the third period with a repositioning of the UK nodes. The dynamics of the MSTs around the referendum date is associated with the persistence in the relative rank of the centrality measures (relative to the median). Conversely, the arrival of hard Brexit does alter the relative ranking of the nodes in accord to the the degree centrality. The ranking in accord to the eigenvector centrality keeps the persistence. However, such movements are not statistically significant. An analysis of this kind points out relevant insights for investors, as it equips them to have a comprehensive view of political events, while also assisting policymakers in their endeavour to uphold stability by closely monitoring the ever-changing influence and interconnectedness of global stock markets during similar political events. The major issue in the evolution of housing prices is risk of housing price contagion. To model this issue, we constructed housing multilayer networks using transfer entropy, generalized variance decomposition, directed minimum spanning trees, and directed planar maximally filtered graph methods, as well as China’s comprehensive indices of housing price and urban real housing prices from 2012 to 2021. The results of our housing multilayer networks show that the topological indices (degree, PageRank, eigenvector, etc.) of new first-tier cities (Tianjin, Qingdao, and Shenyang) rank higher than those of conventional first-tier cities (Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzheng). Studies examining the impact of COVID-19 using network dynamics are scant and tend to evaluate a specific local stock market. We present a thorough investigation of 58 world stock market networks using a complex network approach spanning across the uncertain times that have resulted from the coronavirus outbreak. First, we use the daily closing prices of the world stock market indices to construct dynamic complex networks and sixteen minimum spanning tree (MST) maps for the period from December 2019 to March 2021. Second, we present the topological evolution properties of time-varying MSTs by applying normalized tree length, diameter, average path length, and centrality measures. Moreover, the empirical results suggest that (1) the highest correlation among the world stock markets is observed during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in the months of February–March 2020; (2) most of the MSTs appear lower in hierarchy, and many chain-like structures are formed due to the sheer impact of pandemic-related crises; (3) Germany remained a hub node in many of the MSTs; and (4) the tree severely contracted during the first wave of the COVID-19 outbreak (during the months of February and March 2020) and expanded slightly afterwards. Moreover, the results obtained from this study can be used for the development of financial stability policies and stock market regulations worldwide. Full article

We are looking for tools to identify, model, and measure systemic risk in the insurance sector. To this aim, we investigated the possibilities of using the Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) algorithm in two ways. The first way of using DTW is to assess the suitability of the Minimum Spanning Trees’ (MST) topological indicators, which were constructed based on the tail dependence coefficients determined by the copula-DCC-GARCH model in order to establish the links between insurance companies in the context of potential shock contagion. The second way consists of using the DTW algorithm to group institutions by the similarity of their contribution to systemic risk, as expressed by DeltaCoVaR, in the periods distinguished. For the crises and the normal states identified during the period 2005–2019 in Europe, we analyzed the similarity of the time series of the topological indicators of MST, constructed for 38 European insurance institutions. The results obtained confirm the effectiveness of MST topological indicators for systemic risk identification and the evaluation of indirect links between insurance institutions. Full article

In the present work, we analyze the dynamics of indirect connections between insurance companies that result from market price channels. In our analysis, we assume that the stock quotations of insurance companies reflect market sentiments, which constitute a very important systemic risk factor. Interlinkages between insurers and their dynamics have a direct impact on systemic risk contagion in the insurance sector. Herein, we propose a new hybrid approach to the analysis of interlinkages dynamics based on combining the copula-DCC-GARCH model and minimum spanning trees (MST). Using the copula-DCC-GARCH model, we determine the tail dependence coefficients. Then, for each analyzed period we construct MST based on these coefficients. The dynamics are analyzed by means of the time series of selected topological indicators of the MSTs in the years 2005–2019. The contribution to systemic risk of each institution is determined by analyzing the deltaCoVaR time series using the copula-DCC-GARCH model. Our empirical results show the usefulness of the proposed approach to the analysis of systemic risk (SR) in the insurance sector. The times series obtained from the proposed hybrid approach reflect the phenomena occurring in the market. We check whether the analyzed MST topological indicators can be considered as systemic risk predictors. Full article

Parallel restoration is a way to accelerate the black-start procedure of power systems following a blackout. An efficient sectionalizing scheme can reduce the restoration time of a system, taking into account the black-start ability, generation-load balance of subsystems, restoration time of branches, start-up time of generating units, and effects of dispatchable loads and faulted devices. Solving the sectionalizing problem is challenging since it needs to handle a large number of Boolean variables corresponding to the branches and nonlinear constraints associated with system topology. This paper investigates power system sectionalizing problem for parallel restoration to minimize the system restoration time (SRT). A novel sectionalizing method considering the restoration of generating units and network branches is proposed. Firstly, the minimum spanning tree (MST) algorithm is used to determine the skeleton network of a power system. Secondly, the number of subsystems is determined according to the number of black-start units. Based on the skeleton network, candidate boundary lines among subsystems are identified. Then, constraints are evaluated to identify feasible sectionalizing schemes. Except commonly used constraints on power balancing and black-start units, this paper also considers using dispatchable loads to meet the minimum output requirements of generating units. Finally, the sectionalizing scheme with the minimum SRT is selected as the final solution. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated by the IEEE 39-bus and 118-bus test systems. The simulation results indicate that the proposed method can balance the restoration time of subsystems and minimize the SRT. Full article
