Adult trees of pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.) are recalcitrant to vegetative propagation. In this study, we investigated the micropropagation of five oak genotypes corresponding to trees aged 60–800 years in a liquid medium. We used commercial RITA bioreactors to study the influence of the explant type, the culture medium, shoot support and number of immersions. Variables evaluated included the number of normal and hyperhydric shoots, shoot length, multiplication coefficient and number of rootable shoots per explant. All genotypes could be cultured in temporary immersion. Basal stem sections attached to callus grew better than apical sections and developed less hyperhydricity. For long-term cultivation, Gresshoff and Doy medium was the best of the three media evaluated. All genotypes produced vigorous shoots suitable for rooting and acclimation. This is the first protocol to proliferate adult oak trees in bioreactors, representing significant progress towards large-scale propagation of this and other related species. Full article

This study examines the influence of mass media on the career choices of high school students from Brașov County, Romania, with a focus on their underlying motivational factors. Employing a quantitative design, it draws on data from a standardized questionnaire completed by 1314 students from local high schools. Descriptive and inferential statistical methods were used in the analysis. While some students identify mass media as a key source of career guidance, documentaries and career fairs are more frequently cited as trusted sources. Students’ perceptions of mass media are ambivalent: 55.1% see it as manipulative, while 41.7% and 24.7% acknowledge its informative and educational roles. Personal motivation emerges as the most significant influence, with 64.8% guided by individual talents and abilities, compared to a lower influence from family or media role models. Correlational analysis highlights the importance of personal development, creativity, and collaboration in career motivation. This study suggests that mass media indirectly shapes students’ aspirations by reinforcing values like social recognition, mobility, and identity. Finally, it reveals a strong link between career interest and expectations for respectful, stable, and growth-oriented work environments, pointing to a pragmatic orientation toward professional sustainability. In October 2021 the Swedish government committee of inquiry, the Adoption Commission, was appointed, which presented its final report in June 2025. The Adoption Commission investigated irregular and unethical adoptions to Sweden from the 1950s until today, and it was a part of an ongoing global process of coming to terms with past concerning transnational adoptions. This qualitative media text study examines how the Adoption Commission was perceived by the Swedish adoption world’s three stakeholders, the adoptive parents, the adoption organizations, and the adoptees, between 2021 and 2024 and in relation to transitional justice theories, with a focus on the issues of retributive and restorative justice. Aiming at addressing the defect of the data blindness of a LiDAR point cloud in transparent media such as glass in low illumination environments, a new method is proposed to realize covert target reconnaissance, identification and ranging using the fusion of a shimmering polarized image and a laser LiDAR point cloud, and the corresponding system is constructed. Based on the extraction of pixel coordinates from the 3D LiDAR point cloud, the method adds information on the polarization degree and polarization angle of the micro-light polarization image, as well as on the reflective intensity of each point of the LiDAR. The mapping matrix of the radar point cloud to the pixel coordinates is made to contain depth offset information and show better fitting, thus optimizing the 3D point cloud converted from the micro-light polarization image. On this basis, algorithms such as 3D point cloud fusion and pseudo-color mapping are used to further optimize the matching and fusion procedures for the micro-light polarization image and the radar point cloud, so as to successfully realize the alignment and fusion of the 2D micro-light polarization image and the 3D LiDAR point cloud. The experimental results show that the alignment rate between the 2D micro-light polarization image and the 3D LiDAR point cloud reaches 74.82%, which can effectively detect the target hidden behind the glass under the low illumination condition and fill the blind area of the LiDAR point cloud data acquisition. This study verifies the feasibility and advantages of “polarization + LiDAR” fusion in low-light glass scene reconnaissance, and it provides a new technological means of covert target detection in complex environments. In vitro cartilage explant culture has been used to assess nutraceuticals on cartilage responses to inflammatory stimuli. However, applying extracts of nutraceuticals directly to cartilage explants does not account for effects of digestion and hepatic biotransformation, or selective exclusion of product metabolites from joint fluid by the synovial membrane. The current study produced a simulated biological extract of a common nutraceutical (glucosamine; Gsim) by exposing it to a simulated upper gastrointestinal tract digestion, hepatic biotransformation by liver microsomes, and purification to a molecular weight cut-off of 50 kDa. This extract was then used to condition cartilage explants cultured for 120 h in the presence or absence of an inflammatory stimulus (lipopolysaccharide). Media samples were analyzed for prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), glycosaminoglycan (GAG), and nitric oxide (NO). Tissue was digested and analyzed for GAG content and stained for viability. Conditioning of explants with Gsim significantly reduced media GAG in stimulated and unstimulated explants and reduced nitric oxide production in unstimulated explants. These data provide evidence for the value of glucosamine in protecting cartilage from deterioration following an inflammatory challenge, and the model improves applicability of these in vitro data to the in vivo setting. Swiping Disrupts Switching: Preliminary Evidence for Reduced Cue-Based Preparation Following Short-Form Video Exposure

The rapid rise of short-form video platforms such as TikTok and Instagram Reels has transformed digital engagement by promoting fragmented, high-tempo swiping behaviors and intense sensory stimulation. While these platforms dominate daily use, their impact on higher-order cognition remains underexplored. This study provides preliminary behavioral experimental evidence that even brief exposure to short-form video environments may be associated with reduced cue-based task preparation, a specific subcomponent of proactive cognitive flexibility. In a randomized between-subjects design, participants (N = 72) viewed either 30 min of TikTok-style content, a neutral documentary, or no video (passive control), followed by a task-switching paradigm with manipulated cue–target intervals (CTIs). As expected, the documentary and control group exhibited significant preparation benefits at longer CTIs, reflected in reduced switching costs—consistent with effective anticipatory task-set updating. In contrast, the short video group failed to leverage extended preparation time, indicating a selective disruption of goal-driven processing. Notably, performance at short CTIs did not differ across groups, reinforcing the interpretation that reactive control remained intact, while proactive preparation was selectively impaired. These findings link habitual “swiping” to disrupted task-switching efficiency—a phenomenon summarized as swiping disrupts switching. These findings suggest that short-form video exposure may temporarily bias attentional regulation toward stimulus-driven reactivity, thereby undermining anticipatory cognitive control. Given the widespread use of short-form video platforms—especially among young adults—these results underscore the need to better understand how media design features interact with cognitive control systems. Background/Objective: This study explores a novel approach for diagnosing common middle ear pathologies using Pressure-Less Acoustic Immittance (PLAI™), a non-invasive alternative to conventional tympanometry. Methods: A total of 516 ear measurements were collected and stratified into three age groups: 0–3, 3–12, and 12+ years, reflecting key developmental stages. PLAI™-derived acoustic parameters, including resonant frequency, peak admittance, canal volume, and resonance peak frequency boundaries, were analyzed using Random Forest classifiers, with SMOTE addressing class imbalance and SHAP values assessing feature importance. Results: Age-specific models demonstrated superior diagnostic accuracy compared to non-stratified approaches, with macro F1-scores of 0.79, 0.84, and 0.78, respectively. Resonant frequency, ear canal volume, and peak admittance consistently emerged as the most informative features. Notably, age-based stratification significantly reduced false negative rates for conditions such as Otitis Media with Effusion and tympanic membrane retractions, enhancing clinical reliability. These results underscore the relevance of age-aware modeling in pediatric audiology and validate PLAI™ as a promising tool for early, pressure-free middle ear diagnostics. Conclusions: While further validation on larger, balanced cohorts is recommended, this study supports the integration of machine learning and acoustic immittance into more accurate, developmentally informed screening frameworks. Existing approaches to social media sentiment analysis typically focus on static classification, offering limited foresight into how public opinion evolves. This study addresses that gap by introducing the Multi-Feature Sentiment-Driven Forecasting (MFSF) framework, a novel pipeline that enhances sentiment trend prediction by integrating rich contextual information from text. Using state-of-the-art transformer models on the Sentiment140 dataset, our framework extracts three concurrent signals from each tweet: sentiment polarity, aspect-based scores (e.g., ‘price’ and ‘service’), and topic embeddings. These features are aggregated into a daily multivariate time series. We then employ a SARIMAX model to forecast future sentiment, using the extracted aspect and topic data as predictive exogenous variables. Our results, validated on the historical Sentiment140 Twitter dataset, demonstrate the framework’s superior performance. The proposed multivariate model achieved a 26.6% improvement in forecasting accuracy (RMSE) over a traditional univariate ARIMA baseline. The analysis confirmed that conversational aspects like ‘service’ and ‘quality’ are statistically significant predictors of future sentiment. By leveraging the contextual drivers of conversation, the MFSF framework provides a more accurate and interpretable tool for businesses and policymakers to proactively monitor and anticipate shifts in public opinion. Background/Objectives: For kidney transplantation, it is very important to provide effective post-transplantation interventions to help patients achieve continuous and efficient self-management. Therefore, we review the self-management interventions applied to kidney transplant recipients and suggest the optimal approach to increase the effectiveness of future self-management interventions. Design: Systematic review. Methods: Search terms and strategies included kidney transplantation; self-management; intervention; systematic review. We searched MEDLINE via PubMed, Excerpta Media dataBASE, Cochrane Register Controlled Trials, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, and one domestic Korean database to identify studies of self-management interventions for kidney transplant recipients aged ≥ 18 years published in English or Korean until 14 May 2025. Two reviewers independently selected related studies and extracted relevant data. Identified studies were assessed for quality and bias. Results: Of 1340 studies identified, 27 with 1912 participants met the inclusion criteria. Educational interventions were the most common self-management interventions and were provided 3 months to 1 year after kidney transplantation; most interventions were administered by nurses. Outcome variables were divided into cognitive, behavioral, affective, and health outcomes. Educational interventions were effective in improving cognitive, behavioral, and affective aspects. Some differences were observed, depending on the study. Conclusions: We recommend that nurse-involved educational interventions be included when developing self-management interventions and guidelines for kidney transplant recipients in clinical and community nursing settings. Eurasian aspen (Populus tremula L.) is a tree species with recognised ecological and economic importance for both natural and plantation forests. For the fast cloning of selected aspen genotypes, the method of plant propagation through in vitro culture (micropropagation) is often recommended. The efficiency of this method is related to the use of shoot-inducing chemical growth regulators, among which cytokinins, a type of plant hormone, dominate. Although cytokinins can inhibit rooting, this effect is avoided by using cytokinin-free media. This study sought to identify concentrations and combinations of growth regulators that would stimulate one type of P. tremula organogenesis (either shoot or root formation) without inhibiting the other. The investigated growth regulators included cytokinin 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP), auxin transport inhibitor 2,3,5-triiodobenzoic acid (TIBA), auxins indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and indole-3-butyric acid (IBA), gibberellin biosynthesis inhibitor paclobutrazol (PBZ), and a gibberellin mixture (GA4/7). Both BAP and TIBA increased shoot number per P. tremula explant and decreased the number of adventitious roots, but TIBA, in contrast to BAP, did not inhibit lateral root formation. However, for the maintenance of both adventitious shoot and root formation above the control level, the combination of PBZ and GA4/7 was shown to be especially promising. Full article

Inhibitory Impact of the Amino Benzoic Derivative DAB-2-28 on the Process of Epithelial–Mesenchymal Transition in Human Breast Cancer Cells

Macrophage-mediated inflammation is known to be involved in the epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT) of various types of cancer. This makes macrophage-derived inflammatory factors prime targets for the development of new treatments. This study uncovers the therapeutic potential and action mechanism of DAB-2-28, a small-molecule derived from para-aminobenzoic acid, in the treatment of breast cancer. The luminal MCF-7 and the triple-negative MDA-MB-231 cancer cell lines used in this study represent, respectively, breast cancers in which the differentiation states are related to the epithelial phenotype of the mammary gland and breast cancers expressing a highly aggressive mesenchymal phenotype. In MCF-7 cells, soluble factors from macrophage-conditioned media (CM-MØ) induce a characteristic morphology of mesenchymal cells with an upregulated expression of Snail1, a mesenchymal marker, as opposed to a decrease in the expression of E-cadherin, an epithelial marker. DAB-2-28 does not affect the differential expression of Snail1 and E-cadherin in response to CM-MØ, but negatively impacts other hallmarks of EMT by decreasing invasion and migration capacities, in addition to MMP9 expression and gelatinase activity, in both MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cells. Moreover, DAB-2-28 inhibits the phosphorylation of key pro-EMT transcriptional factors, such as NFκB, STAT3, SMAD2, CREB, and/or AKT proteins, in breast cancer cells exposed to different EMT inducers. Overall, our study provides evidence suggesting that inhibition of EMT initiation or maintenance is a key mechanism by which DAB-2-28 can exert anti-tumoral effects in breast cancer cells. Mechanistic Insights and Real-World Evidence of Autologous Protein Solution (APS) in Clinical Use

Autologous therapies are currently being studied to determine if they can modulate the course of knee osteoarthritis symptoms and/or disease progression. One potential therapeutic target is the polarization of pro-inflammatory M1 macrophages to pro-healing M2 macrophages. The autologous therapy, Autologous Protein Solution (APS), was incubated with donor-matched human peripheral-derived macrophages for 10 days. M1 pro-inflammatory macrophages were determined by the percentage of CD80+ and M2 pro-healing macrophages were determined by CD68+ and CD163+ by epifluorescent microscopy. To determine clinical effectiveness, an APS-specific minimal clinically important improvement (MCII) using an anchor-based method was calculated in a randomized controlled trial of APS (n = 46) and then applied to a real-world registry study (n = 78) to determine the percentage of pain responders. Compared to control media, APS statistically increased the percentage of M2 macrophages and decreased the percentage of M1 macrophages, while platelet-poor plasma had no effect on polarization. In the randomized controlled trial (RCT), the MCII at the 12-month follow-up visit was calculated as 2.0 points on the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) pain scale and 7.5 points on the WOMAC function scale. Applying this MCII to the real-world registry data, 62.5% of patients met the MCII with an average of 4.7 ± 2.5 points of improvement in pain. Autologous therapies can influence macrophage polarization and have demonstrated clinical effectiveness in a real-world patient setting. Full article

Background: Fixed-dose combinations have advanced in many therapeutic areas, including otorhinolaryngology, where hearing disorders are increasingly prevalent. Objectives: The present study focuses on developing and evaluating a new capsule combining nicergoline (NIC), piracetam (PIR), and hawthorn extract (HE) for the management of sensorineural hearing loss. Methods: The first phase methodology comprised preformulation studies (DSC, FTIR, and PXRD) to assess compatibility among active substances and excipients. Subsequently, four formulations were prepared and tested for flowability, dissolution behavior in acidic and neutral media, and stability under oxidative, thermal, and photolytic stress. Quantification of the active substances and flavonoids was performed using validated spectrophotometric and HPLC-UV methods. Results: Among the tested variants, the F1 formulation (4.5 mg NIC, 200 mg PIR, 50 mg HE, 2.5 mg magnesium stearate, 2.5 mg sodium starch glycolate, and 240.5 mg monohydrate lactose per capsule) displayed optimal technological properties, superior dissolution in acidic media, and was further selected for evaluation. The antioxidant activity of the formulation was confirmed through the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay, Trolox Equivalent Antioxidant Capacity (TEAC), and iron chelation tests, and was primarily attributed to the flavonoid content of the HE. Acute toxicity tests in mice and rats indicated a high safety margin (LD50 > 2500 mg/kg), while ototoxicity assessments showed no adverse effects on auditory function. Conclusions: The developed formulation displayed good stability, safety, and therapeutic potential, while the applied workflow could represent a model for the development of future fixed-dose combinations. Rapid Salmonella Serovar Classification Using AI-Enabled Hyperspectral Microscopy with Enhanced Data Preprocessing and Multimodal Fusion

Salmonella serovar identification typically requires multiple enrichment steps using selective media, consuming considerable time and resources. This study presents a rapid, culture-independent method leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to classify Salmonella serovars from rich hyperspectral microscopy data. Five serovars (Enteritidis, Infantis, Kentucky, Johannesburg, 4,[5],12:i:-) were analyzed from samples prepared using only sterilized de-ionized water. Hyperspectral data cubes were collected to generate single-cell spectra and RGB composite images representing the full microscopy field. Data analysis involved two parallel branches followed by multimodal fusion. The spectral branch compared manual feature selection with data-driven feature extraction via principal component analysis (PCA), followed by classification using conventional machine learning models (i.e., k-nearest neighbors, support vector machine, random forest, and multilayer perceptron). The image branch employed a convolutional neural network (CNN) to extract spatial features directly from images without predefined morphological descriptors. Using PCA-derived spectral features, the highest performing machine learning model achieved 81.1% accuracy, outperforming manual feature selection. CNN-based classification using image features alone yielded lower accuracy (57.3%) in this serovar-level discrimination. In contrast, a multimodal fusion model combining spectral and image features improved accuracy to 82.4% on the unseen test set while reducing overfitting on the train set. This study demonstrates that AI-enabled hyperspectral microscopy with multimodal fusion can streamline Salmonella serovar identification workflows. Full article

Physics concepts are considered an essential component of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education and fundamental for economic and technological development in the world. However, there can be student academic underperformance, such as the school environment, learning media and infrastructure, student interest and emotions, as well as social and economic development factors in communities. These problems are even more acute in rural areas of developing countries, where poverty is high and teachers often lack the necessary technological skills. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of a low-cost STEM tool focused on motivation in learning, in terms of five variables of interest in physics in rural areas, as well as the durability of the tools used to learn 12 physics concepts. A quasi-experimental study was conducted with the participation of 78 high school students, with an average age of 15.82 years, in a rural area of Guerrero, Mexico. The results showed that using the STEM tool significantly increased students’ interest in learning methodology, active participation, and attitude towards physics, facilitating the teacher’s work. In addition, the 3D construction kit used in the experimentation, besides being low-cost, proved to be affordable and durable, making it ideal for use in rural areas. Full article
