Quantum finance, as a key application scenario of quantum computing, showcases multiple significant advantages of quantum machine learning over traditional machine learning methods. This paper first aims to overcome the limitations of the hidden quantum Markov model (HQMM) in handling continuous data and proposes an innovative method to convert continuous data into discrete-time sequence data. Second, a hybrid quantum computing model is developed to forecast stock market trends. The model was used to predict 15 stock indices from the Shanghai and Shenzhen Stock Exchanges between June 2018 and June 2021. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed quantum model outperforms classical algorithmic models in handling higher complexity, achieving improved efficiency, reduced computation time, and superior predictive performance. This validation of quantum advantage in financial forecasting enables the practical deployment of quantum-inspired prediction models by investors and institutions in trading environments. This quantum-enhanced model empowers investors to predict market regimes (bullish/bearish/range-bound) using real-time data, enabling dynamic portfolio adjustments, optimized risk controls, and data-driven allocation shifts. This study provides a comprehensive assessment and synthesis of the literature on short-selling. It performs a lexicometric analysis, providing a quantitative review of 1093 peer-reviewed journal articles to identify and illustrate the main themes in short-selling research. Almost half the published literature on short-selling is thematically clustered around portfolio management techniques. Other key themes involve short-selling as it relates to risk management, strategic management, and market irregularities. Descending hierarchical classification examines the overall structure of the textual corpus of the short-selling literature and the relationships between its key terms. Similarity analysis reveals that the short-selling literature is highly concentrated, with most conceptual groups closely aligned and fitting into overlapping or conceptually similar areas. Some notable groups highlight prior short-selling studies of market dynamics, behavioral factors, technological advancements, and regulatory frameworks, which can serve as a foundation for market regulators to make more informed decisions that enhance overall market stability. Additionally, this study proposes a conceptual framework in which short-selling can be either a driver or an outcome by integrating the literature on its antecedents, consequences, explanatory variables, and boundary conditions. Finally, it suggests directions for future research. Full article

This study examined the dynamic interconnectedness and portfolio implications within the cryptocurrency ecosystem, focusing on five representative digital assets across the core functional categories: Layer 1 cryptocurrencies (Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH)), decentralized finance (Uniswap (UNI)), stablecoins (Dai), and crypto infrastructure tokens (Maker (MKR)). Using the Extended Joint Connectedness Approach within a Time-Varying Parameter VAR framework, the analysis captured time-varying spillovers of return shocks and revealed a heterogeneous structure of systemic roles. Stablecoins consistently acted as net absorbers of shocks, reinforcing their defensive profile, while governance tokens, such as MKR, emerged as persistent net transmitters of systemic risk. Foundational assets like BTC and ETH predominantly absorbed shocks, contrary to their perceived dominance. These systemic roles were further translated into portfolio design, where connectedness-aware strategies, particularly the Minimum Connectedness Portfolio, demonstrated superior performance relative to traditional variance-based allocations, delivering enhanced risk-adjusted returns and resilience during stress periods. By linking return-based systemic interdependencies with practical asset allocation, the study offers a unified framework for understanding and managing crypto network risk. The findings carry practical relevance for portfolio managers, algorithmic strategy developers, and policymakers concerned with financial stability in digital asset markets. Full article

Understanding the price dynamics of oil futures is crucial for advancing green finance strategies and supporting sustainable energy transitions. This study investigates the macroeconomic and energy market determinants of oil futures prices through Granger causality, cointegration analysis, and the error correction model, using daily data. It focuses on the influence of economic development levels, exchange rate fluctuations, and inter-energy price linkages. The empirical findings indicate that (1) oil futures prices exhibit strong correlations with other energy prices, macroeconomic factors, and exchange rate variables; (2) economic development significantly affects oil futures prices, while exchange rate impacts are statistically insignificant based on the daily data analyzed; (3) there exists a stable long-term equilibrium relationship between oil futures prices and variables representing economic activity, exchange rates, and energy market trends; (4) oil futures prices exhibit significant short-term dynamics while adjusting steadily toward a long-run equilibrium driven by macroeconomic and energy market fundamentals. By enhancing the accuracy of oil futures price forecasting, this study offers practical insights for managing financial risks associated with fossil energy markets and contributes to the formulation of low-carbon investment strategies. The findings provide a valuable reference for integrating energy pricing models into sustainable finance and climate-aligned portfolio decisions. Full article

The recent economic turmoil and the increasing volatility of bitcoins have necessitated the need for exploring safe-haven assets for bitcoins. In this quest, the present study aims to investigate the safe haven for bitcoins by examining the dynamic relationship between bitcoins, gold, foreign exchange, and stablecoins. This is achieved by calculating hedge ratios and portfolio weight ratios for various asset classes, by employing adaptive-based techniques such as generalized orthogonal generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity, corrected dynamic conditional correlation, corrected asymmetric dynamic conditional correlation, and asymmetric dynamic conditional correlation under various market and time-varying conditions. The empirical estimate reveals that all the selected asset classes are effective risk diversifiers for bitcoins. However, among all the asset classes, as per the hedge and portfolio weight ratio, Japanese yen, stablecoin for Japanese yen and Great Britain Pound, and Crypto Holding Frank Token (lowest-cost hedging strategies) are the most effective risk diversifiers when compared with bitcoins. Moreover, while considering external economic shocks, the empirical estimate posits that stablecoins are more stable risk diversifiers compared to the asset class they represent. Furthermore, in terms of the bivariate portfolio analysis formed with bitcoin, this study concludes that the weight of bitcoin is more stable when combined with gold, tether gold, Euro, Great Britain Pound, Swiss franc, and Japanese Yen. Thus, these assets are attractive for long-term investment strategies. This study provides investors and policymakers with significant insight into understanding safe-haven assets for bitcoin’s volatility and constructing a flexible portfolio that is dependent on the investment timeline and the prevailing market conditions. This paper introduces a novel multi-objective optimization framework for sustainable portfolio rebalancing under uncertainty. The model simultaneously targets return maximization, downside risk control, and liquidity preservation, addressing the complex trade-offs faced by investors in volatile markets. Unlike traditional static approaches, the framework allows for dynamic asset reallocation and explicitly incorporates nonlinear transaction costs, offering a more realistic representation of trading frictions. Key financial parameters—including expected returns, volatility, and liquidity—are modeled using interval arithmetic, enabling a flexible, distribution-free depiction of uncertainty. Risk is measured through semi-absolute deviation, providing a more intuitive and robust assessment of downside exposure compared to classical variance. A core innovation lies in the behavioral modeling of investor preferences, operationalized through three strategic configurations, pessimistic, optimistic, and mixed, implemented via convex combinations of interval bounds. The framework is empirically validated using a diversified cryptocurrency portfolio consisting of Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, and Binance Coin, observed over a six-month period. The simulation results confirm the model’s adaptability to shifting market conditions and investor sentiment, consistently generating stable and diversified allocations. Beyond its technical rigor, the proposed framework aligns with sustainability principles by enhancing portfolio resilience, minimizing systemic concentration risks, and supporting long-term decision-making in uncertain financial environments. Its integrated design makes it particularly suitable for modern asset management contexts that require flexibility, robustness, and alignment with responsible investment practices. Full article

The global crude oil market, known for its pronounced volatility and nonlinear dynamics, plays a pivotal role in shaping economic stability and informing investment strategies. Contrary to traditional research focused on price forecasting, this study emphasizes the more investor-centric task of predicting returns for West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil. By spotlighting returns, it directly addresses critical investor concerns such as asset allocation and risk management. This study applies advanced machine learning models, including XGBoost, random forest, and neural networks to predict crude oil return, and for the first time, incorporates sustainability and external risk variables, which are shown to enhance predictive performance in capturing the non-stationarity and complexity of financial time-series data. To enhance predictive accuracy, we integrate 55 variables across five dimensions: macroeconomic indicators, financial and futures markets, energy markets, momentum factors, and sustainability and external risk. Among these, the rate of change stands out as the most influential predictor. Notably, XGBoost demonstrates a superior performance, surpassing competing models with an impressive 76% accuracy in direction forecasting. The analysis highlights how the significance of various predictors shifted during the COVID-19 pandemic. This underscores the dynamic and adaptive character of crude oil markets under substantial external disruptions. In addition, by incorporating sustainability factors, the study provides deeper insights into the drivers of market behavior, supporting more informed portfolio adjustments, risk management strategies, and policy development aimed at fostering resilience and advancing sustainable energy transitions. Navigating the complexity of petroleum futures markets—marked by extreme volatility, geopolitical uncertainty, and macroeconomic shocks—demands adaptive and risk-sensitive strategies. This paper explores an Adaptive Risk-sensitive Transformer-based Deep Reinforcement Learning (ART-DRL) framework to improve portfolio optimization in commodity futures trading. While deep reinforcement learning (DRL) has been applied in equities and forex, its use in commodities remains underexplored. We evaluate DRL models, including Deep Q-Networks (DQN), Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO), Advantage Actor-Critic (A2C), and Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (DDPG), integrating dynamic reward functions and asset-specific optimization. Empirical results show improvements in risk-adjusted performance, with an annualized return of 1.353, a Sharpe Ratio of 4.340, and a Sortino Ratio of 57.766. Although the return is below DQN (1.476), the proposed model achieves better stability and risk control. Notably, the models demonstrate resilience by learning from historical periods of extreme volatility, including the COVID-19 pandemic (2020–2021) and geopolitical shocks such as the Russia–Ukraine conflict (2022), despite testing commencing in January 2023. This research offers a practical, data-driven framework for risk-sensitive decision-making in commodities, showing how machine learning can support portfolio management under volatile market conditions. Portfolio optimisation is a crucial decision-making task. Traditionally static, this problem is more realistically addressed as dynamic, reflecting frequent trading within financial markets. The dynamic nature of the portfolio optimisation problem makes it susceptible to rapid market changes or financial contagions, which may cause drifts in historical data. While reinforcement learning (RL) offers a framework that allows for the formulation of portfolio optimisation as a dynamic problem, existing RL approaches lack the ability to adapt to rapid market changes, such as pandemics, and fail to capture the resulting concept drift. This study introduces a recurrent proximal policy optimisation (PPO) algorithm, leveraging recurrent neural networks (RNNs), specifically the long short-term memory network (LSTM) for pattern recognition. Initial results conclusively demonstrate the recurrent PPO’s efficacy in generating quality portfolios. However, its performance declined during the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting susceptibility to rapid market changes. To address this, an incremental recurrent PPO is developed, leveraging incremental learning to adapt to concept drift triggered by the pandemic. This enhanced algorithm not only learns from ongoing market data but also consistently identifies optimal portfolios despite significant market volatility, offering a robust tool for real-time financial decision-making. Weather derivative markets, particularly Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) Heating Degree Day (HDD) and Cooling Degree Day (CDD) futures, face challenges from complex temperature dynamics and spatially heterogeneous co-extremes that standard Gaussian models overlook. Using daily data from 13 major U.S. cities (2014–2024), we first construct a two-stage baseline model to extract standardized residuals isolating stochastic temperature deviations. We then estimate the Extreme Value Index (EVI) of HDD/CDD residuals, finding that the nonlinear degree-day transformation amplifies univariate tail risk, notably for warm-winter HDD events in northern cities. To assess multivariate extremes, we compute Tail Dependence Coefficient (TDC), revealing pronounced, geographically clustered tail dependence among HDD residuals and weaker dependence for CDD. Finally, we compare Gaussian, Student’s t, and Regular Vine Copula (R-Vine) copulas via joint VaR–ES backtesting. The R-Vine copula reproduces HDD portfolio tail risk, whereas elliptical copulas misestimate portfolio losses. These findings highlight the necessity of flexible dependence models, particularly R-Vine, to set margins, allocate capital, and hedge effectively in weather derivative markets. Full article

There has been growing interest among investors to include cryptocurrencies in their portfolios because of their diversification potential. However, the diversification role of cryptocurrencies when added to South African bank equities is yet to be determined. This study rigorously evaluates asset co-movement and diversification benefits of integrating cryptocurrencies into South African bank equity portfolios. Using advanced financial engineering techniques, including multi-asset particle swarm optimizer (MA-PSO), random optimizer, and a static equal-weighted portfolio (EWP) model, this study analyzed the dynamic portfolio performance and diversification of cryptocurrencies in the 2017–2024 period. The portfolio performance of the three methods is also compared with the results from the traditional one-period mean–variance optimization (MVO) method. The findings underscore the superiority of dynamic models over static EWP in assessing the impact of cryptocurrency inclusion in bank equity portfolios. While pre-COVID-19 studies identified cryptocurrencies as effective hedges against market downturns, this protective role appears attenuated in the post-COVID-19 era. The dynamic MA-PSO model emerges as the optimal approach, delivering better-diversified portfolios. Consequently, South African portfolio managers must carefully evaluate investor risk tolerance before incorporating cryptocurrencies, with regulators imposing stringent guidelines to mitigate potential losses. Cryptocurrency markets are characterized by high volatility, nonlinear dependencies, and limited transparency, making short-term forecasting particularly challenging for both researchers and practitioners. To address these complexities, this study introduces a Temporal Fusion Transformer (TFT)-based forecasting framework that integrates on-chain and technical indicators to improve predictive performance and inform tactical trading decisions. By combining multi-source features—such as Spent Output Profit Ratio (SOPR), Total Value Locked (TVL), active addresses (AA), exchange net flow (ENF), Realized Cap HODL Waves, and the Crypto Fear and Greed Index—with classical signals like Relative Strength Index (RSI) and moving average convergence divergence (MACD), the model captures behavioral patterns, investor sentiment, and price dynamics in a unified structure. Five major cryptocurrencies—BTC, ETH, USDT, XRP, and BNB—serve as the empirical basis for evaluation. The proposed TFT model is benchmarked against LSTM, GRU, SVR, and XGBoost using standard regression metrics to assess forecasting accuracy. Beyond prediction, a signal-based trading strategy is developed by translating model outputs into daily buy, hold, or sell signals, with performance assessed through a comprehensive set of financial metrics. The results suggest that integrating attention-based deep learning with domain-informed indicators provides an effective and interpretable approach for multi-asset cryptocurrency forecasting and real-time portfolio strategy optimization. We propose the financial generative adversarial network–bidirectional long short-term memory (FINGAN-BiLSTM) model to accurately reproduce the complex statistical properties and stylized facts, namely, heavy-tailed behavior, volatility clustering, and leverage effects observed in the log returns of the foreign exchange (FX) market. The proposed model integrates a bidirectional LSTM (BiLSTM) into the conventional FINGAN framework so that the generator, discriminator, and predictor networks simultaneously incorporate both past and future information, thereby overcoming the information loss inherent in unidirectional LSTM architectures. Experimental results, assessed using metrics such as the Kolmogorov–Smirnov statistic, demonstrate that FINGAN-BiLSTM effectively mimics the distributional and dynamic patterns of actual FX data. In particular, the model significantly reduces the maximum cumulative distribution discrepancy in assets with high standard deviations and extreme values, such as the Canadian dollar (CAD) and the Mexican Peso (MXN), while precisely replicating dynamic features like volatility clustering and leverage effects, thereby outperforming conventional models. The findings suggest that the proposed deep learning–based forecasting model holds significant promise for practical applications in financial risk assessment, derivative pricing, and portfolio optimization, and they highlight the need for further research to enhance its generalization capabilities through the integration of exogenous economic variables. This study examines the interplay between oil price volatility, sustainability-driven initiatives, and the MSCI UAE Index, highlighting the challenges that oil-dependent economies face in balancing financial stability with sustainability transitions. Using a dataset of 2707 daily observations from 2014 to 2024, we applied linear regression, ARCH, GARCH, and TARCH models to analyze volatility dynamics across two key periods: the 2014–2016 oil price collapse and the 2019–2023 phase marked by the COVID-19 pandemic and increasing sustainability efforts. Our findings indicate that oil price fluctuations significantly impact the MSCI UAE Index, with GARCH models confirming persistent volatility and TARCH models revealing asymmetrical effects, where negative shocks intensify market fluctuations. While the initial sustainability policy announcements contributed to short-term volatility and investor uncertainty, they ultimately fostered market confidence and long-term stabilization. Unlike previous studies focusing solely on oil price volatility in emerging markets, this research integrates sustainability policy announcements into financial modeling, providing novel empirical insights into their impact on financial stability in oil-exporting economies. The findings suggest that stabilization funds, dynamic portfolio strategies, and transparent regulatory policies can mitigate oil price volatility risks and enhance market resilience during sustainability transitions, offering valuable insights for investors, policymakers, and financial institutions navigating the UAE’s evolving economic landscape. This research examines the challenges of issuing green bonds due to a lack of established benchmarks. We compare regional differences between the U.S. and the E.U., hypothesizing that issuers of green bonds stand to benefit from comparing them to conventional (black) bonds. As most investors prioritize net positive returns as opposed to intangible sustainability metrics, the existence of a “green premium”, defined as the opportunity to price green bonds differently, remains to be proven. To this end, we employ a time-varying parameter vector autoregression (TVP-VAR), first deriving dynamic variance–covariance matrices and then conducting variance decomposition analysis to gauge connectedness and spillover effects of various bond benchmarks. Implementing multivariate portfolio construction strategies, we investigate the hedging capabilities of green and black bonds. Our findings show that both green and black bonds contribute to portfolio diversification as a risk management strategy. The paper highlights the role played by green bonds in promoting financial stability. Full article
