This study presents the design, fabrication, and performance assessment of a novel, small-scale (30–70 W), hybrid ocean energy system that captures energy from wave-induced heave motion using a point-absorber buoy and from ocean currents via a vertical axis water turbine (VAWT). Key innovations include a custom designed and built dual-rotor generator that accepts independent mechanical input from both subsystems without requiring complex mechanical coupling and a bi-directional mechanical motion rectifier with an overdrive. Numerical simulations using ANSYS AQWA (2024R2) and QBLADE(2.0.4) guided the design optimization of the buoy and turbine, respectively. Wave resource assessment for the Khobar coastline, Saudi Arabia, was conducted using both historical data and field measurements. The prototype was designed and built using readily available 3D-printed components, ensuring cost-effective construction. This mechanically simple system was tested in both laboratory and outdoor conditions. Results showed reliable operation and stable power generation under simultaneous wave and current input. The performance is comparable to that of existing hybrid ocean wave–current energy converters that employ more complex flywheel or dual degree-of-freedom systems. This work provides a validated pathway for low-cost, compact, and modular hybrid ocean energy systems suited for remote coastal applications or distributed marine sensing platforms. Full article

Deep-sea mining presents a critical sustainability paradox; it offers access to essential minerals for the technologies of the green transition (e.g., batteries, wind turbines, electric vehicles) yet threatens fragile marine ecosystems. As the terrestrial sources of these materials face mounting geopolitical, environmental, and ethical constraints, undersea deposits are increasingly being viewed as alternatives. However, the extraction technologies remain unproven at large scales, posing risks related to biodiversity loss, sediment disruption, and altered oceanic carbon cycles. This paper explores how deep-sea mining might be reconciled with sustainable development, arguing that its viability hinges on addressing five interdependent challenges—technological readiness, environmental protection, economic feasibility, robust governance, and social acceptability. Progress requires parallel advancements across all domains. This paper reviews the current knowledge of deep-sea resources and extraction methods, analyzes the ecological and sociopolitical risks, and proposes systemic solutions, including the implementation of stringent regulatory frameworks, technological innovation, responsible terrestrial sourcing, and circular economy strategies. A precautionary and integrated approach is emphasized to ensure that the securing of critical minerals does not compromise marine ecosystem health or long-term sustainability objectives. Full article

Biofouling, the accumulation of marine organisms on submerged surfaces, presents a significant challenge to the design, performance, and maintenance of offshore wind turbines (OWTs). This work synthesizes current knowledge on the physical and operational impacts of biofouling on OWT marine substructures, with a particular focus on how it alters hydrodynamic loading, increases drag and mass, and affects fatigue and structural response. Drawing from experimental studies, computational modeling, and real-world observations, this paper highlights the critical need to integrate biofouling effects into design practices. Additionally, emerging mitigation strategies are explored, including advanced antifouling materials and AI-driven monitoring systems, which offer promising solutions for long-term biofouling management. By addressing both engineering and ecological perspectives, this paper underscores the importance of developing robust, adaptive approaches to biofouling that can support the durability, reliability, and environmental sustainability of the offshore wind industry. Against the backdrop of increasingly depleted global non-renewable resources, research on renewable energy has become urgently critical. As a significant marine clean energy source, tidal current energy has attracted growing scholarly interest, effectively addressing global energy shortages and fossil fuel pollution. Semi-enclosed bay straits, with their geographically advantageous topography, offer substantial potential for tidal energy exploitation. China’s Bohai Strait exemplifies such a geomorphological feature. This study focuses on the Bohai Strait, employing the Delft3D model to establish a three-dimensional numerical simulation of tidal currents in the region. Combined with the Flux tidal energy assessment method, the tidal energy resources are evaluated, and exploitation recommendations are proposed. The results demonstrate that the Laotieshan Channel, particularly its northern section, contains the most abundant tidal energy reserves in the Bohai Strait. The Laotieshan Channel has an average power flux density of 50.83 W/m2, with a tidal energy potential of approximately 81,266.5 kW, of which about 12,189.97 kW is technically exploitable. Particularly in its northern section, favorable flow conditions exist—peak current speeds can reach 2 m/s, and the area offers substantial effective power generation hours. Annual durations with flow velocities exceeding 0.5 m/s total around 4500 h, making this zone highly suitable for deploying tidal turbines. To maximize the utilization of tidal energy resources, installation within the upper 20 m of the water layer is recommended. This study not only advances tidal energy research in semi-enclosed bay straits but also provides a critical reference for future studies, while establishing a foundational framework for practical tidal energy development in the Bohai Strait region. This study investigates an aerodynamic optimization framework inspired by marine biological morphology, utilizing the sailfish profile as a basis for airfoil configuration. Through Latin hypercube experimental design combined with optimization algorithms, four key geometric variables governing the airfoil’s hydrodynamic characteristics were systematically analyzed. Parametric studies revealed that pivotal factors including installation angle significantly influenced the fluid dynamic performance metrics of lift generation and pressure drag. Response surface methodology was employed to establish predictive models for these critical performance indicators, effectively reducing computational resource consumption and experimental validation costs. The refined bio-inspired configuration demonstrated multi-objective performance improvements compared to the baseline configuration, validating the computational framework’s effectiveness for hydrodynamic profile optimization studies. Furthermore, a coaxial dual-rotor vertical axis turbine configuration was developed, integrating centrifugal and axial-flow energy conversion mechanisms through a shared drivetrain system. The centrifugal rotor component harnessed tidal current kinetic energy while the axial-flow rotor module captured wave-induced potential energy. Transient numerical simulations employing dynamic mesh techniques and user-defined functions within the Fluent environment were conducted to analyze rotor interactions. Results indicated the centrifugal subsystem demonstrated peak hydrodynamic efficiency at a 25° installation angle, whereas the axial-flow module achieves optimal performance at 35° blade orientation. Parametric optimization revealed maximum energy extraction efficiency for the centrifugal rotor occurs at λ = 1.25 tip-speed ratio under Re = 1.3 × 105 flow conditions, while the axial-flow counterpart attained optimal performance at λ = 1.5 with Re = 5.5 × 104. This synergistic configuration demonstrated complementary operational characteristics under marine energy conversion scenarios. Full article

Local scour is a phenomenon of sediment erosion and transport caused by the dynamic interaction between water flow and seabed sediment, posing a serious threat to the safety of marine engineering structures such as cross-sea bridges and offshore wind turbines. To improve scour prediction and prevention capabilities, this review systematically analyzes the influence mechanisms of factors such as hydrodynamic conditions, sediment characteristics, and structural geometry, and discusses scour protection measures. Based on this, a comprehensive evaluation of the applicability of different prediction methods, including traditional empirical formulas, numerical simulations, probabilistic prediction models, and machine learning (ML) methods, was conducted. The study focuses on analyzing the limitations of existing methods: empirical formulas lack adaptability under complex field conditions, numerical simulation still faces challenges in validating real marine environments, and data-driven models suffer from “black box” issues and insufficient generalization capabilities. Based on the current research progress, this review presents prospects for future development, emphasizing the need to deepen the study of scouring mechanisms in complex real marine environments, develop efficient numerical models for engineering applications, and explore intelligent prediction methods that integrate data-driven approaches with physical mechanisms. This aims to provide more reliable theoretical support for the safe design, risk prevention, and scouring mitigation measures in marine engineering. Full article

The monopile foundation is a popular foundation type for offshore wind turbines; due to the harsh marine environment, there are lateral loads applied on the monopile foundation from winds and currents, and scouring also often occurs around the pile, reducing the bearing capacity and impacting the normal operation of offshore wind turbines. A series of 1 g model tests is conducted to investigate the lateral load response and scouring response of the monopile in sand. Based on the experimental results, the characteristics of the pile’s load-displacement curves, bending moments, and p-y curves under the effects of scour were analyzed. Particle Image Velocimetry technology was adopted to analyze the deformation development rules of soil particles around the pile. It is found that under the same lateral load, the maximum bending moment of the pile increases and the bearing capacity is reduced as the scour depth increases, the scour width increases, or the scour slope decreases. The effects of scour depth, slope, and width on pile bearing stability decrease successively. Soil displacements and strains in the passive zone in front of the pile develop gradually in both radial and vertical directions. Full article

The decarbonization of offshore infrastructures is relevant to advancing global climate goals. This study presents a renewable-based energy system tailored for the Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands (PLOCAN), designed to achieve full energy autonomy and eliminate greenhouse gas emissions. A hybrid configuration integrating photovoltaic panels, vertical-axis wind turbines, lithium-ion batteries, a proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer, and a PEM fuel cell was developed and evaluated through detailed resource assessment, system simulation, and techno-economic analysis under real offshore constraints. The results confirm that complete decarbonization is technically feasible, with a net present cost approximately 15% lower than the current diesel-based system and a total suppression of pollutant emissions. Although the transition entails a higher initial investment, the long-term economic and environmental gains are substantial. Offshore green hydrogen emerges as a key vector for achieving energy resilience and sustainability in isolated marine infrastructures, offering a replicable pathway towards fully decarbonized ocean platforms. This literature review critically examines the development and optimization of sustainable energy and exergy analysis software specifically designed for offshore wind farms, emphasizing the transformative role of machine learning (ML) in overcoming operational challenges. Offshore wind energy represents a cornerstone in the global transition to low-carbon economies due to its scalability and superior energy yields; however, its complex operational environment, characterized by harsh marine conditions and logistical constraints, necessitates innovative analytical tools. Traditional deterministic methods often fail to capture the dynamic interactions within wind farms, thereby underscoring the need for ML-integrated approaches that enhance precision in energy forecasting, fault detection, and exergy analysis. This PRISMA-ScR review synthesizes recent advancements in ML techniques, including Random Forest, Long Short-Term Memory networks, and hybrid models, demonstrating significant improvements in predictive accuracy and operational efficiency. In addition, it critically identifies current gaps in existing software tools, such as inadequate real-time data processing and limited user interface design, which hinder the practical implementation of ML solutions. By integrating theoretical insights with empirical evidence, this study proposes a unified framework that leverages ML algorithms to optimize turbine performance, reduce maintenance costs, and minimize environmental impacts. Emerging trends, such as incorporating digital twins and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, further enhance the potential for real-time system monitoring and adaptive control. Overall, this review provides a comprehensive roadmap for the next generation of software tools to revolutionize offshore wind farm management, thereby aligning technological innovation with global renewable energy targets and sustainable development goals. Power cables transmit electricity from offshore wind turbines (OWTs) to consumers. The configuration, design, and optimization of power cables for floating offshore wind turbines (FOWTs) are subject to various objectives, variables, and constraints. These components are outlined, and existing research gaps that need to be addressed for a more sustainable and robust design for future developments are highlighted. The main aim of power cable configuration design is to optimize performance and minimize costs. This can be achieved through thoughtful consideration of variables like power cable selection, configuration design, and the integration of specialized components and ancillaries. An extensive overview of constraints for power cable configuration design is provided, and the most important ones are identified. The local conditions determine which constraints are of key importance in optimization. Environmental factors like wind, waves, and especially currents significantly influence design processes, introducing uncertainties when comprehensive data are lacking. Marine growth posed a significant challenge in prior FOWT projects and must be considered carefully. Considering the potential impact of climate change is crucial, especially for extreme weather events. Early integration of environmental considerations and assessment of effects on socio-economic impacts is essential for a successful project. The power cable response is also influenced by its inherent limitations, including tension and compression thresholds, curvature constraints, and the necessary minimum fatigue life. A flowchart is provided to aid in choosing variables and constraints in the design and optimization processes. Full article

Ocean energy represents a promising resource for renewable energy generation. Hydrokinetic turbines (HKTs) provide a sustainable method to extract energy from ocean currents. However, turbine efficiency remains limited, particularly in marine environments with low flow velocities. A parametric evaluation of blade configurations is conducted in this study to assess their effect on the power and torque performance of a double-stage drag-based Savonius HKT. Numerical simulations are conducted using the Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) equations with the k-ω SST turbulence model. The numerical model is validated against published data, and analyses on mesh density, domain size, and time step are performed to ensure accuracy. Three blade configurations—(0°, 0°), (0°, 45°), and (0°, 90°) are evaluated under flow velocities of 0.6 m/s, 0.8 m/s, and 1.0 m/s. Results indicate that blade configuration significantly affects turbine performance. The (0°, 0°) configuration performs best at high flow velocity (1.0 m/s), while the (0°, 45°) setup achieves the highest efficiency at 0.6 m/s. The (0°, 90°) configuration performs the least effectively across all conditions. A similar performance trend is observed for the torque coefficient. This study recommends selecting blade configurations based on flow velocity, providing design guidance for double-stage HKTs operating in varying marine conditions. Full article

Historically, a large fraction of fatigue testing of both components and structures has been performed using hydraulic actuators. These are typically driven by servo-valves, which are in themselves very inefficient. But, as most tests involve elastically stressing mechanical components, a lot of stored energy could be recovered. Unfortunately, servo-valves are not regenerative—simply metering out fluid in order to relax the system prior to the start of the next cycle. There is much to be gained with a more intelligently controlled system. The FastBlade facility in Scotland uses a new type of regenerative test hydraulics. Digital displacement pump/motors (DDPMs), originated by Artemis Intelligent Power, now Danfoss Scotland, are used to load and unload the test structure directly via hydraulic rams. The DDPMs are driven by induction motors supplied by three-phase frequency converters, each with a very loose speed correction target, such that they can speed up or slow down according to the instantaneous torque exerted by the load. The rotating assembly of the induction motor and DDPM is designed to have sufficient inertia so as to function as a kinetic energy storage flywheel. The loading energy is then cyclically transferred between the rotating inertia of the motor/DDPM and the spring energy in the test structure. The electric motor provides sufficient energy to maintain the target average cyclical shaft speed of the DDPM whilst the bulk of the system energy oscillates between the two storage mechanisms. Initial tests (at low load) suggest that this technique requires only 30% of the energy previously needed. FastBlade is a unique facility built by the University of Edinburgh and Babcock, with support from the UK EPSRC, conceived as a means of testing and certifying turbine blades for marine current turbines. However, this approach can be used in any cyclical application where elastic energy is stored. Full article

To begin with, the hydrodynamic performance of the benchmark turbine is evaluated using CFD simulations and is validated against sea-test data available in the literature. Subsequently, three of the turbine design parameters, namely, the fins’ pitch angle, the fins’ camber length, and the fins’ aspect ratio, are optimised for maximum power generation. Further test simulations illustrated the existence of a laminar region of flow in the turbine flow field. The K-kL-ω transition-sensitive turbulence model is adopted to capture the influence of transition on the flow field with results compared against those of the fully turbulent K-ε turbulence model. A final fine-tuning in the turbine design is carried out by increasing the number of fins per ring in the outermost rings to further maximise the generated power. The turbine hydrodynamic performance is assessed by comparison against other conventional hydrokinetic turbines available in the literature. Very satisfactory results are obtained with an increase of about 35% in the turbine-generated CP as compared to that of the benchmark turbine. The turbine performance compares very well with other conventional turbines, especially in terms of higher peak CP values, wider operating TSR range, and less sensitivity to variations in the inflow current speeds. The grand challenge of sustainable development, increased demands for resilient critical infrastructure systems, and cost efficiency calls for thinking and acting “out of the box”. We must strive to search for, identify, and utilize new and emerging technologies and new combinations of existing technologies that have the potential to improve present best practices. In integrity management of, e.g., bridge, offshore, and marine structures, relatively new technologies have shown substantial potentials for improvements that not least concern structural health monitoring (SHM), digital twin (DT)-based structural and mechanical modeling, and risk-based inspection (RBI) and maintenance planning (RBI). The motivation for the present paper is to investigate and document to what extent such technologies in isolation or jointly might have the potential to improve best practices for integrity management of offshore wind turbine structures. In this pursuit, the present paper conducts a comprehensive bibliometric analysis to explore the current landscape of advanced technologies within the offshore wind turbine industry suitable for integrity management. It examines the integration of these technologies into future best practices, taking into account normative factors like risk, resilience, and sustainability. Through this analysis, the study sheds light on current research trends and the degree to which normative considerations influence the application of RBI, SHM, and DT, either individually or in combination. This paper outlines the methodology used in the bibliometric study, including database selection and search term criteria. The results are presented through graphical representations and summarized key findings, offering valuable insights to inform and enhance industry practices. These key findings are condensed into a road map for future research and development, aimed at improving current best practices by defining a series of projects to be undertaken. Full article

Marine Current Turbines (MCTs) play a critical role in converting the kinetic energy of water into electricity. However, due to the influence of marine organisms, marine current equipment often experiences imbalance faults. Additionally, affected by the underwater environment, the fault characteristics are submerged in disturbances such as waves and turbulence. Against the background of the above problems, this article proposes a fault detection strategy based on a Generalized Likelihood Ratio Test (GLRT) detector. Firstly, a simulation model of the MCT system is established to obtain prior knowledge. Then, combining the Matrix Pencil Method (MPM) for calculating instantaneous frequency, imbalance fault metrics are selected based on the proposed GLRT detector. At the end, the marine current turbine experimental platform is established, which can simulate imbalanced faults and environmental disturbances, helping to verify the effectiveness of the proposed strategy. The experimental results indicate that the proposed strategy can detect imbalanced faults in complex underwater environments. Imbalance faults are the main manifestation of blade attachments. Thus, it is very meaningful to accomplish fault detection in order to maintain the working order of the MCT system. Full article
