Gender-Specific Interactions Between Adiposity, Alcohol Consumption, and Biological Stress Biomarkers Among College Students in the United States

Background: Obesity is a well-documented risk factor for cardiometabolic diseases associated with insulin resistance. However, research on its relationship with alcohol intake and stress markers, such as cortisol and α-amylase, remains limited, particularly among young adults in the general population. Objective: This study investigated the relationship between adiposity measures, alcohol intake, and biological stress biomarkers among college students. Methods: Participants (n = 189) completed the NIH Diet History Questionnaire II. Body composition was measured via bioelectrical impedance analysis. Salivary α-amylase (sAA) activity and cortisol (sCort) were assessed using the Salimetrics α-amylase kinetic enzyme assay and enzyme immunoassay kits, respectively. Multivariable linear regression models were used to determine the association between alcohol consumption and adiposity on biological stress biomarkers. Results: Among students who were overweight and obese, higher alcohol consumption increased sAA activity (β = 1.52, p = 0.030), with a greater effect in females (β = 2.24, p = 0.012). Body fat percentage showed similar patterns with sAA activity (β = 2.20, p = 0.015), with no significant effect in males. There was no significant interaction between BMI or body fat and alcohol consumption on sCort levels. However, significant main effects were observed for African Americans (β = 0.22, p = 0.020) and overweight and obese status (β = −0.19, p = 0.025) on male students’ sCort levels. African Americans (β = 0.21, p = 0.026) and young male adults within the underfat category (β = 0.35, p = 0.022) also exhibited increased sCort levels. Conclusion: Sex-specific patterns in physiological responses between males and females revealed stronger associations in females for sAA activity and distinct patterns in sCort levels among African American males. This study addresses the shortcomings of traditional exercise volume assessment methods in dynamic modeling and individual adaptation by proposing a multi-modal data fusion framework based on a spatio-temporal attention-enhanced LSTM neural network for personalized exercise volume optimization in college basketball courses. By integrating physiological signals (heart rate), kinematic parameters (triaxial acceleration, step count), and environmental data collected from smart wearable devices, we constructed a dynamic weighted fusion mechanism and a personalized correction engine, establishing an evaluation model incorporating BMI correction factors and fitness-level compensation. Experimental data from 100 collegiate basketball trainees (60 males, 40 females; BMI 17.5–28.7) wearing Polar H10 and Xsens MVN devices were analyzed through an 8-week longitudinal study design. The framework integrates physiological monitoring (HR, HRV), kinematic analysis (3D acceleration at 100 Hz), and environmental sensing (SHT35 sensor). Experimental results demonstrate the following: (1) the LSTM-attention model achieves 85.3% accuracy in exercise intensity classification, outperforming traditional methods by 13.2%, with its spatio-temporal attention mechanism effectively capturing high-dynamic movement features such as basketball sudden stops and directional changes; (2) multi-modal data fusion reduces assessment errors by 15.2%, confirming the complementary value of heart rate and acceleration data; (3) the personalized correction mechanism significantly improves evaluation precision for overweight students (error reduction of 13.6%) and beginners (recognition rate increase of 18.5%). System implementation enhances exercise goal completion rates by 10.3% and increases moderate-to-vigorous training duration by 14.7%, providing a closed-loop “assessment-correction-feedback” solution for intelligent sports education. The research contributes methodological innovations in personalized modeling for exercise science and multi-modal time-series data processing. Full article

The mental and physical health of college students, especially in urban environments like Shanghai, is crucial given the high academic and urban stressors, which were intensified by the COVID-19 lockdown. Prior research has shown gender differences in health impacts during public health crises, with females often more vulnerable to mental health issues. Objective: This study aimed to comprehensively assess the physical and psychological health of Chinese college students post-lockdown, focusing on the relationship between stress, anxiety, depression, sleep patterns, and physical health, with a particular emphasis on gender differences. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study involving 116 students in Shanghai, utilizing psychological scales (HAMA, IPAQ, PSQI, SDS, FS 14, PSS, SF-36) and physical fitness tests (resting heart rate, blood pressure, hand grip, forced vital capacity, standing long jump, sit-and-reach, one-minute sit-up test and the one-minute squat test, single-leg stand test with eyes closed), to analyze health and behavior during the pandemic lockdown. All students have undergone the same life habits during the pandemic. Results: The HAMA scores indicated no significant levels of physical or mental anxiety. The PSS results (42.45 ± 8.93) reflected a high overall stress level. Furthermore, the PSQI scores (5.4 ± 2.91) suggested that the participants experienced mild insomnia. The IPAQ scores indicated higher levels of job-related activity (1261.49 ± 2144.58), transportation activity (1253.65 ± 987.57), walking intensity (1580.78 ± 1412.20), and moderate-intensity activity (1353.03 ± 1675.27) among college students following the lockdown. Hand grip strength (right) (p = 0.001), sit-and-reach test (p = 0.001), standing long jump (p = 0.001), and HAMA total score (p = 0.033) showed significant differences between males and females. Three principal components were identified in males: HAMA, FS14, and PSQI, explaining a total variance of 70.473%. Similarly, three principal components were extracted in females: HAMA, PSQI, and FS14, explaining a total variance of 69.100%. Conclusions: Our study underscores the complex interplay between physical activity (PA), mental health, and quality of life, emphasizing the need for gender-specific interventions. The persistent high stress, poor sleep quality, and reduced PA levels call for a reorganized teaching schedule to enhance student well-being without increasing academic pressure. Full article

Background/Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the level of awareness among dental students and practitioners regarding the utilization of endocrowns in clinical settings, along with any differences in knowledge based on gender, educational level, and workplace. Methods: A cross-sectional online survey-based study was conducted, including 1154 participants from various dental institutions across Saudi Arabia. The questionnaire included demographic data and closed-ended questions focused on knowledge and awareness of endocrowns. Data was analyzed using statistical tests, including chi-square, to see any significant differences. Results: Most participants (81%) had knowledge about endocrowns, mainly from their colleagues. Knowledge levels and preferences (like the use of lithium disilicate and adhesive resin cement) differed based on gender, educational level, and workplace. Male participants and undergraduates showed better awareness in some areas. Faculty members mostly depend on college training, while private practitioners obtain most of their information from workshops. Conclusions: Males showed significant superiority in knowledge about endocrown usage. Colleges were the most prevalent source of information regarding endocrown restorations. Significant molar tooth loss and restricted inter-arch space were the most common reasons for utilizing endocrowns. Moreover, endocrowns were considered a viable alternative to traditional post and core. Full article

Gender harassment is the most common variant of sexual harassment and is often seen in male-dominated workplaces. Importantly, persistent gender harassment produces pronounced impairment in psychological and occupational domains. The current study aimed to examine the degree to which male dominated academic degree programs are associated with higher rates of sexual harassment compared to female dominated programs. Four academic fields were chosen for their gender disparity—business, engineering, health sciences, and education. Consistent with hypotheses, cisgender women students in the college of engineering were most likely to experience gender harassment by peers and faculty. Implications and future directions are discussed. Full article

Drawing on Antonovsky’s salutogenic model, this study investigated how stressful life events relate to university students’ sense of coherence (SOC), focusing on the potential mediating roles of coping style and general self-efficacy, and the moderating role of stress mindset. An analysis of data collected from 2454 Chinese college students (63.6% males, 36.4% females) revealed that stressful life events negatively predicted SOC, with coping style and general self-efficacy significantly sequentially mediating this relationship. Furthermore, stress mindset moderated the relationship between stressful life events and coping style, such that a more positive mindset was associated with more adaptive coping under stress. These findings support the dual-pathway structure of the salutogenic model by illustrating both behavioral and perceptual mechanisms. Importantly, they also underscore the idea that stress, when cognitively reappraised and effectively managed, may contribute to the development of SOC—rather than simply undermining it. This highlights the potential value of stress itself within salutogenic processes. The study offers theoretical insights and preliminary directions for strength-based mental health promotion in higher education settings. Full article

Objectives: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a leading cause of several cancers, yet HPV vaccination rates among U.S. young adults remain low. This study evaluated the effect of a brief educational video, co-developed with college students, in increasing HPV vaccination intention among unvaccinated college-aged individuals. Methods: A two-group randomized controlled trial was conducted among 215 college students aged 18–26 who had not received the HPV vaccine. Participants were randomly assigned to two interventions: a video group (n = 111) or a leaflet group that viewed a CDC-based educational sheet (n = 104). Pre- and post-intervention surveys assessed HPV knowledge, perceived risk, facilitators and barriers to vaccination, cultural beliefs, and vaccination intention. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-tests, Wilcoxon Signed-Rank, and Mann–Whitney U tests. Results: At baseline, approximately 56% of the sample (n = 215; mean age = 23.5, 71.2% male) have learned about HPV in the past. Although both groups improved in HPV knowledge, perceived lower risk, and cultural beliefs, between-group differences in these theoretical mediators were not statistically significant. Vaccination intention (those who responded “Yes” or “Maybe”) increased by 10.8% in the video group but decreased by 11.6% in the leaflet group following the intervention; the difference between the two groups was statistically significant (p = 0.03). Conclusions: A brief, participatory, and theory-based video significantly increased HPV vaccination intent among unvaccinated college students. Compared to the leaflet intervention, the video intervention offers a promising and scalable public health strategy for promoting HPV vaccination in this high-risk population. Full article

In recent years, the Korean government has begun to encourage college students to start businesses due to college students’ employment difficulties. The government has implemented various policies to support college students to start businesses. In this study, we attempted to determine the relationship between ES (entrepreneurship), EA (entrepreneurial attitude), and ESE (entrepreneurial self-efficacy), psychological variables known to affect EI. Data were collected from 415 male and female college students in Korea via a mobile survey. The structural equation model analysis revealed that ES and ESE had positive effects on EI, and the effect of ESE was greater than that of the other variables. The effect of ESE on EA was significant only in the group without EE(NEL) but not in the group with EE(EL). When ES influenced EI, EA had no mediating effect, and when ESE influenced EI, EA played a mediating role positively only in the NEL group. This study identified previously unrecognized ES factors as predictors of EI and showed that ESE is a relatively strong predictor of EI again. This implies that, in order to increase the EI of college students, it is necessary to increase the entrepreneurial ability characterized as objective, rational, realistic, and stable, such as ESE. One of the useful methods is to provide entrepreneurship education to them. Full article

This study explored the integration of technology into teaching practices by examining how faculty members at a newly established university in Saudi Arabia utilized the Blackboard learning system. Specifically, it investigated the use of multimedia e-learning tools by male and female faculty members during regular teaching periods following the COVID-19 pandemic. A survey questionnaire was developed using a 5-point Likert scale. The instrument covered demographic information, content creation, assessment methods, utility tools, and factors influencing Blackboard usage. Upon receiving approval, the survey was distributed via email to all faculty members across nine colleges. A total of 198 responses were collected and analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistical methods. The findings indicated that gender had little to no statistically significant impact on the use of key Blackboard tools—such as content creation features (e.g., files, folders, items), assessment tools (e.g., tests, assignments), and utilities (e.g., virtual classes, email)—at the college level. However, when analyzed at the university level, some tools’ usage showed statistically significant gender differences at the α = 0.05 level. Furthermore, both male and female faculty members cited convenience, flexibility in uploading materials, access to virtual classes, and remote assessment of students as primary factors influencing their e-learning preferences. Emotion regulation (ER) strategies, such as reappraisal and suppression, have been linked to psychological well-being. The available evidence points to the differential impact of ER strategies on resilience and post-traumatic growth (PTG), as factors related to well-being, as well as to sex differences in the link between ER preference and well-being. However, previous studies are mixed regarding these links. To address this issue, college students (N = 1254) recruited between 2020 and 2023 reported their habitual use of ER strategies, resilience and PTG during the COVID-19 pandemic, which, as a global health crisis, has raised not only severe physical health concerns but also mental distress. First, reappraisal was positively associated with both resilience and PTG, whereas suppression was negatively correlated with these measures. Second, female participants had lower suppression scores and higher PTG scores than male participants. Third, a moderation analysis showed that the positive relationship between reappraisal and PTG was stronger in female participants, whereas the negative relationship between suppression and PTG was stronger in male participants. Overall, these findings shed light on the links among ER strategies, resilience, and PTG and have relevance for customized training in the use of reappraisal to increase well-being in women and men. Entrepreneurship has long been a key driver of economic development across various countries. Investigating the determinants of entrepreneurial behaviour is essential for making a meaningful contribution to sustainable development. This study investigated the determinants of entrepreneurial behaviour among university of technology and TVET college students in South Africa, utilising the modified theory of planned behaviour. Specifically, the study explored how risk-taking propensity, financial and non-financial support, media, and gender influence perceived behavioural control, entrepreneurial intention, and behaviour. Additionally, the study tested the direct effects of perceived behavioural control on both entrepreneurial intention and entrepreneurial behaviour, as well as the direct effect of entrepreneurial intention on entrepreneurial behaviour. An online, structured, self-administered questionnaire was utilised to gather data from 496 finalyear diploma students at a university of technology and a TVET college, using a convenience sampling technique. Partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) was applied to analyse the data and test the postulated hypotheses. The findings revealed that non-financial support positively affected entrepreneurial intention, perceived behavioural control, and entrepreneurial behaviour, while financial support did not. Risk-taking propensity significantly influenced perceived behavioural control, entrepreneurial intention, and entrepreneurial behaviour. The results revealed that the gender was negatively related to perceived behavioural control, and female students exhibited lower perceived behavioural control than their male counterparts. However, gender showed no significant association with entrepreneurial intention or entrepreneurial behaviour. Media had a positive influence on both entrepreneurial intention and perceived behavioural control but did not significantly affect entrepreneurial behaviour. Additionally, both entrepreneurial intention and entrepreneurial behaviour were positively influenced by perceived behavioural control, while entrepreneurial intention also was positively associated with entrepreneurial behaviour. These findings underscore the critical role of fostering a supportive entrepreneurial environment in shaping entrepreneurial behaviour. This study provides valuable insights for policymakers and educators to cultivate an environment that supports students in developing as entrepreneurs. The results can inform policymakers in implementing support interventions aimed at enhancing entrepreneurial capacity among the youth. Promoting entrepreneurship is vital in achieving sustainable development goals through job creation and poverty alleviation. Full article

The mental health of college students, particularly first-year students, deserves significant attention. As they transition from high school to college, they experience substantial changes not only in their learning behaviors but also in their daily behaviors, which may pose mental health challenges. However, existing studies exploring the factors influencing college students’ mental health still have limitations in the selection of predictor variables and behavior assessment. Building on this, our study adopted a cross-sectional design involving 110 first-year college students in China (M = 17.94 years; 47 males, 63 females) and analyzed the impact of daily behaviors on mental health. We collected daily behavioral data through a designed mini program, and assessed mental health using the GHQ-28. LASSO regression was applied to identify key behavioral predictors, and semi-structured interviews were conducted to further explore the impact of these factors. The results show that sleep quality, planned and implemented physical exercise, average self-evaluation scores, average daily number of planned tasks, and the completion rate of planned tasks have a positive impact on mental health. These findings contribute to enhancing the theoretical understanding of how daily behaviors shape college students’ mental health and offer practical guidance for universities to carry out mental health education. Background: Athletes with expertise in sports show extensive procedural and factual information, enhancing their ability to focus attention, use cues, and anticipate events. This study examined the differentiation of perceptual-cognitive skills by focusing on attentional cues, processing speed, and working memory. Methods: The component skill approach was used to assess differences in sports expertise levels using non-sport-specific cognitive measures of perceptual-cognitive skills. The study involved a total of 127 college athletes with a mean age of 20.23 years (SD = 3.08) and an average of 10.99 years of training. Among these participants, there were 43 female athletes with a mean age of 20.23 years (SD = 3.32) and 84 male athletes with a mean age of 20.22 years (SD = 2.98). We analyzed the cohort of students who did not engage in regular sports training, identifying them as the control group for our study. A multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) was employed to analyze the measures of the SPT and CBT perceptual-cognitive tasks, treating them as separate dependent variables. The categorization of elite levels and participants is outlined below: there are 41 semi-elite athletes, 70 competitive elite athletes, 12 successful elite athletes, and 4 world-class elite athletes. Results: There were no differences in semi-elite and competitive elite athletes’ perceptual-cognitive skills regarding visual-spatial reaction time (Wilks’ λ = 0.956, p > 0.05), but there was a significant difference in the working memory span (Wilks’ λ = 0.804, p < 0.05). Conclusions: The study reports that elite college athletes have higher working memory, which is crucial for sport performance, compared to semi-elite athletes. However, no between-group differences were observed in reaction time. Full article

The mental health of college students has become a key focus in higher education, and physical activity may play a crucial role in promoting positive psychology among college students. This study explores the relationship between physical activity and physical self-efficacy among college students and analyzes the mediating effect of psychological resilience to provide theoretical support for health intervention strategies. This study included a sample of 369 college students aged 18–25 from the Zhuhai Campus of Beijing Normal University. The International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form (IPAQ-S), the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC), and the Physical Self-Efficacy Scale for College Students (PSES-CS) were administered to 369 students (138 males and 231 females) through a questionnaire survey. The data were processed using SPSS 29.0 and AMOS 26.0 software. Significant positive correlations were found between physical activity, psychological resilience, and physical self-efficacy. Regression analysis revealed that physical activity had a significant effect on psychological resilience and physical self-efficacy and explained 8.3% and 14.9% of the variance, respectively. Psychological resilience partially mediated the relationship between physical activity and physical self-efficacy, accounting for 30.05% of the total effect. Moreover, gender moderated the relationship between physical activity and physical self-efficacy. Physical activity can enhance the physical self-efficacy of college students, with psychological resilience playing a partial mediating role and gender acting as a moderating factor. Emphasizing the cultivation of psychological resilience in educational and personal growth processes is highly important for improving individuals’ physical self-efficacy and well-being. Full article

Objective: To examine associations among psychological distress, perceptions of life changes, and perceptions of family support among college students during the quarantine period of the pandemic. Background: A supportive family can buffer psychological distress during crises. During the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, many college students abruptly returned to their family home, disrupting a developmental stage typically oriented toward independence and peer connection. While previous research has highlighted the stressors of this period, less is known about the role of perceived family support in shaping students’ mental health outcomes. Method: Data from a cross-sectional sample of 339 college students were collected. Statistical analysis included a hierarchical multiple regression and moderated moderation to investigate the relationship between the life changes college students experienced due to COVID-19 and distress and how family support moderated this relationship while treating gender as a secondary moderator. Results: Perceptions of worsening life conditions due to COVID-19 were associated with higher levels of distress and vice versa. Perceptions of emotional forms of family support moderated this relationship, but only among male participants. Conclusions: This study contributes to our understanding of the mental health implications of the pandemic on college students by identifying emotional family support as a gender-specific protective factor. Implications: Insights from this study may inform mental health interventions that consider family dynamics and gender-specific coping during large-scale crises. These findings may also guide strategies for supporting students facing the long-term psychological impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Full article
