Sexual Dysfunction in the Life Cycle of Women: Implications for Psychological Health

Objective: Sexual dysfunction (SD) is a prevalent but frequently overlooked condition that adversely affects women’s quality of life and psychological well-being. This study aimed to examine the relationship between SD and depression, anxiety, and stress levels during premenopausal, pregnancy, and postmenopausal. Methods: This prospective, cross-sectional study included 300 women aged 18–70 who presented with SD symptoms to a tertiary care gynecology outpatient clinic. Participants were categorized into premenopausal, pregnant, and postmenopausal groups. Sexual function was assessed using the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI), and psychological status was evaluated with the Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21). Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify risk factors associated with SD. Results: The results showed that SD prevalence varied across life stages, with the highest rate (96%) observed in postmenopausal women. Significant decreases were found in all FSFI subscales, particularly lubrication and orgasm, during the postmenopausal period (p < 0.001). Although DASS-21 total scores did not differ significantly between groups (p = 0.227), severe stress was more prevalent in premenopausal women (p = 0.018). Univariate logistic regression revealed that older age, higher parity, and menopause increased SD risk (p < 0.001), while employment (p = 0.006), higher education (p = 0.012), and pregnancy (p < 0.001) were protective factors. Multivariate analysis identified parity as the only independent variable significantly increasing SD risk (p = 0.011). Weak but significant negative correlations were found between FSFI total score and DASS-21 total (r = −0.137, p = 0.018), anxiety (r = −0.135, p = 0.019), and depression (r = −0.176, p = 0.002) scores. Conclusion: These findings highlight the importance of individualized assessment and treatment approaches for women’s sexual health across different life stages, considering the influence of various biological, psychological, and social factors. Lubrication is a critical process in cold strip rolling, and the accurate characterization of lubrication characteristics is an essential factor affecting the strip quality. The roll bending and tilting roll in the flatness actuators change the loaded roll gap profile and affect the lubrication characteristics by flatness dynamic correction, thus the mismatch between the actual and setting values of the lubrication status factor. Firstly, the flatness deviation correction model of roll bending and tilting roll based on the key information of the rolling process is established according to the high-order flatness target. Secondly, the characterization of the instantaneous oil film thickness in the work zone based on the loaded roll gap profile is derived from Reynolds’ equation. Finally, the explicit characterization method of the lubrication status factor in the rolling force model of the final stand is established with the work roll bending, tilting roll, and instantaneous oil film thickness of the work zone as variables, relying on the UCM five-stand, six-roll tandem cold rolling mill. The statistical evaluation and application results show that the mentioned optimization method can improve the setting accuracy of the rolling force by about 60% and the after-rolling gauge accuracy by about 50%. Men who have sex with men (MSM) in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) are disproportionately affected by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) compared to adult men in the general population. Unprotected anal sexual intercourse is a high-risk behavior for HIV infection. This makes the correct and consistent use of condoms with condom-compatible lubricants crucial in reducing further HIV acquisition amongst the MSM population in SSA. However, consolidated data on the scope of the consistency of condom use with lubricants among MSM in SSA is lacking. In this regard, it was necessary to consolidate existing evidence on consistent condom usage with lubricants, as well as associated context-specific factors among the MSM population in SSA. A systematic review was conceptualized and registered with the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (registration number: CRD42023437904). It was compiled following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) principles and guidelines between July 2023 and June 2024. We searched PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, and governmental and non-governmental institutions to find published and gray literature relevant to the review objectives from 2005 to June 2024. Studies conducted in SSA, published in English, focusing on MSM aged ≥15 years and also reported condom and lubricant use were considered for this review. Following the removal of duplicates and ineligible articles, 40 studies out of 202 reviewed were selected for the study. The most common study designs were cross-sectional surveys (n = 32) followed by prospective cohorts (n = 4), integrated bio-behavioral surveillance surveys (n = 3), and intervention studies (n = 1). Of the 40 eligible studies included in this review, half (n = 20) reported consistent use of condoms but without lubricants, three reported consistent use of condoms with lubricants but did not specify the lubricant type, six reported consistent condom use with water-based condom-compatible lubricants, and 11 reported only condom use but not consistent usage. Factors linked to consistent condom use with lubricants among MSM from various studies included higher educational level, knowing one’s HIV status, accessibility challenges, and older age. Having a high level of self-worth and HIV risk-reduction counseling was also associated with a consistency of condom use amongst MSM who engaged in receptive anal sex. This review indicates that only a few studies reported consistent condom use with lubricants and water-based compatible lubricants. Full article

Owing to the requirements for high performance and long life, the friction and wear problems of rolling piston type rotary compressors have drawn much attention. Various theoretical models have been developed and improved to reveal the inner state of the compressor and obtain the optimization schemes. However, there remain some disadvantages and research gaps in the corresponding modeling and mixed lubrication analyses, and a comprehensive summary is lacking. To have a better understanding of the research status, this paper reviews the theoretical model development and mixed lubrication analyses of the compressor in the past decades. The determination of compression pressure, the modeling process of moving components, and the key findings are presented in detail. On this basis, some important influencing factors and the problems remaining to be solved are also discussed. This paper provides multifaceted guidance for manufacturers and researchers to conduct further theoretical analysis and optimal design. Full article

Background: Hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome (HBOC) predisposes women to an increased risk mainly of breast and tubo-ovarian cancer. The aim of the study is to investigate whether being diagnosed with HBOC syndrome is itself a risk factor for sexual dysfunction. Methods: An ad hoc questionnaire, including baseline demographic and clinical data, and the Sexual Function Questionnaire 28 (SFQ28) were administered to HBOC female carriers (study group) and to a control group. Results: After propensity score matching (1:1), we enrolled 202 women, 101 in the study group and 101 in the control group. In a multivariate analysis, we finally found that menopausal status was the only risk factor for a significant low score in the domains Desire (HR 0.66; CI95% 0.47–0.93; p = 0.017), Arousal (Lubrication) (HR 0.52; CI95% 0.34–0.80; p = 0.003), Arousal (Cognitive) (HR 0.64; CI95% 0.44–0.95; p = 0.027), and Orgasm (HR 0.33; CI95% (0.16–0.70; p = 0.004), independent of risk-reducing surgery for gynecological malignancy. Psycho-oncology support is a protective factor for the Enjoyment domain (HR 1.38; CI95% 1.05–1.81; p = 0.022). Conclusions: HBOC syndrome itself does not affect SFQ28 domains, while menopausal status significantly influences sexual health, with potential mitigating effects of psycho-oncological support. This comparative cross-sectional study conducted at the “Pius Brinzeu” healthcare center in Timisoara explored the differential impacts of pregnancy planning status on sexual function, body image, and relationship satisfaction among pregnant women. Employing the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI), Body Esteem Scale for Adolescents and Adults (BESAQ), and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II), the study analyzed responses from 107 participants divided into groups of planned (n = 59, mean age 28.5 ± 5.2) and unplanned (n = 48, mean age 27.3 ± 4.8) pregnancies. In the first trimester, unplanned pregnancies reported higher median scores in desire (4.7 vs. 3.6, p = 0.005), arousal (4.5 vs. 3.8, p = 0.001), and lubrication (4.6 vs. 3.7, p = 0.015) compared to planned pregnancies. Satisfaction scores also favored unplanned pregnancies in the first trimester (4.8 vs. 3.9, p = 0.009). Similar trends were observed in subsequent trimesters, with unplanned pregnancies consistently reporting higher FSFI scores, indicating a robust sexual function. Risk factors significantly associated with sexual dysfunction were a higher BMI in the first trimester (beta coefficient: −0.124, p = 0.019), unmarried civil status (beta coefficient: −0.323, p = 0.045), history of previous abortion (beta coefficient: −0.451, p = 0.012), irregular menstrual cycles (beta coefficient: −0.384, p = 0.026), and rural living area (beta coefficient: −0.278, p = 0.034). Notably, unplanned pregnancy itself was not a significant risk factor for sexual dysfunction (beta coefficient: −0.054, p = 0.095). Regarding relationship dynamics, planned pregnancies exhibited significantly higher satisfaction with partner support (4.1 ± 0.9 vs. 3.7 ± 1.1, p = 0.041) and communication within the couple (4.0 ± 1.0 vs. 3.5 ± 1.2, p = 0.020), whereas unplanned pregnancies reported higher satisfaction with emotional closeness (4.3 ± 0.7 vs. 3.8 ± 1.0, p = 0.004). Concerns about managing professional activities and household chores were significantly more prevalent in the unplanned pregnancy group (62.50% vs. 33.90%, p = 0.014). Unplanned pregnancies demonstrated better initial sexual function but faced greater challenges in relationship satisfaction and managing pregnancy demands. Identifying and addressing the risk factors associated with sexual dysfunction can provide targeted interventions to improve the well-being of pregnant women, regardless of pregnancy planning status. In order to accurately and efficiently analyze the distribution law and motion status of lubricating oil in the spiral bevel gearbox of the electric multiple unit (EMU), a high-fidelity 3D CFD model of the spiral bevel gearbox of the EMU was established for the first time. The moving particle semi-implicit method was used to visualize the lubricating-oil flow field distribution characteristics of the gearbox. The distribution characteristics of lubricating oil in the gearbox with varying gear rotation speeds, initial lubricating-oil volume levels and oil temperatures were analyzed. It was found that the initial lubricating-oil volume is the factor with the largest influence, while the influences of gear rotation speed and oil temperature are relatively small. By analyzing the churning loss under various simulation conditions, it was found that the churning loss is positively correlated with the gear rotation speed and initial oil volume, and is more affected by the initial oil volume. The churning loss is negatively correlated with the oil temperature, and both are nonlinear relationships. The proportion of churning loss related to the driven gear is higher compared to that of the driving gear. These results can provide a theoretical basis for the subsequent optimization of the gearbox. Full article

Objective: To evaluate the impact of systemic sclerosis (SSc) on vulvovaginal atrophy (VVA) and sexual health in an Italian population. Methods: An Italian survey about the prevalence and severity of VVA (on a 0 to 10 scale) and sexual dysfunction (using the Female Sexual Function Index—FSFI) through an anonymous online questionnaire. We investigated couple relationships and intimacy with partners, the predisposition of patients to talk about their sexual problems, physicians’ receptivity, and treatment scenarios. Risk factors for VVA symptoms and sexual dysfunction were assessed. Results: A total of 107 women affected by SSc were enrolled. Of these, 83.2% of women (89/107) complained about VVA symptoms and 89.7% (among sexually active women; 87/97) about sexual dysfunction. Menopausal status did not affect VVA symptoms, while age was the only independent risk factor for sexual dysfunction. About 70% (74/107) of women reported a negative impact of disturbances on intimacy with their partner. A total of 63 women (58.9%) had never discussed their sexual problems and VVA condition with a physician. Lubricants were the only treatment prescribed, and 75% of women would welcome new therapies, even if experimental (62.9%). Conclusions: In women with SSc, VVA symptoms and sexual dysfunction are highly prevalent, independently from menopause. In more than half of the investigated women with SSc, we found reluctance to talk about their sexual problems, despite being symptomatic. This should encourage physicians to investigate vulvovaginal and sexual health. SSc patients would welcome the advent of new treatment possibilities for their VVA and sexual complaints. Full article

The aim of this study is to analyze the evolution of sexual function throughout pregnancy and highlight the predicting factors of sexual dysfunction in pregnant women. Our study included 144 participants, aged 16 to 45. Patients were evaluated three times during pregnancy by filling out the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) and the Body Exposure in Sexual Activities Questionnaire (BESAQ). At the time of the last evaluation, we asked patients to also fill out Beck’s Depression Inventory (BDI-II) and a questionnaire regarding their psychological status and relationship satisfaction. We observed that the FSFI lubrication, satisfaction, and pain domains and the FSFI total score significantly decreased from the 1st to the 3rd evaluation. We observed that an increase in BDI score and the presence of abortion in the patient’s history increase the risk of developing female sexual dysfunction (FSD). Higher BMIs were found to be a protective factor against FSD, as was being unmarried. The relationship satisfaction score was found to be an independent predictor of FSD. These findings support previous studies that indicate that pregnancy and postpartum sexuality are multifaceted phenomena and that psycho-social factors have a greater impact on sexuality than biological factors. Small end bearings are a critical component of reciprocating engines, and the performance of their lubrication performance directly affects engines’ reliability and mechanical efficiency. There are many factors that influence their lubrication. A new type of small-end bearing test rig was developed to reveal key influencing factors and their influence on lubrication characteristics, and a multi-body dynamic model coupled with elastohydrodynamic (EHD) characteristics was built. The model was verified through experiments. In accordance with the orthogonal experimental requirements, the impact of various factors on small-end bearing lubrication characteristics was analyzed, and the results showed that: (1) minimal oil film thickness (MOFT), friction power, and maximum oil film pressure (MOFP) are the major evaluation indicators of small-end bearing lubrication, and the most significant influencing factors are the pin bushings’ clearance, engine speed, and bushing surface roughness; (2) increasing the clearance of the pin bushings can increase the hydrodynamic lubrication percentage and the average thickness of the oil film, but it also reduces the local minimum thickness of the oil film; (3) an increase in roughness can improve the MOFT and enhance its carrying capacity, but may also increase friction power; and (4) high speeds can increase the thickness of the oil film between the piston pin and bushing and improve lubrication status, but it also increases friction power on the asperity contact region, reducing mechanical efficiency. The research results can be used for the design of connecting rod small-end bearings to improve their mechanical efficiency and reliability. Full article

Copper (Cu)-based composite coatings have been widely applied in all kinds of important industry fields due to their outstanding comprehensive properties. The preparation temperature of a composite coating is the key factor affecting the properties, so the cold spray (CS) technology is characterized by low-temperature solid-state deposition, which ensures its emergence as the most promising technology for preparing the Cu-based composite coatings. In this paper, first, the principle of CS technology and the deposition mechanism of the coatings are introduced. On this basis, the deposition mechanism of Cu-based metal/ceramic composite coatings is further explored. Secondly, the effects of key CS process parameters (particle velocity, particle morphology, and substrate state) on the quality of the Cu-based composite coatings are summarized, and the current research status of cold-sprayed Cu-based composite coatings in the fields of corrosion resistance, wear resistance, self-lubricating properties, and electrical conductivity is reviewed. Moreover, the improvement of the performance of Cu-based composite coatings by various post-process treatments of coatings, such as heat treatment (HT) and friction stir processing (FSP), is elaborated. Finally, the future development of Cu-based composite coatings and CS technology is prospected. Full article

Nanoparticles as lubricant additives demonstrate powerful friction reduction and antiwear properties and are potential alternatives to traditional additives in line with green and environmentally friendly requirements. However, the vast majority of currently available research focuses on the tribological properties of various nanoparticles in base oils at laboratory, which has a large gap with their application in engineering. To cope with the rapid economic and industrial development in China, there is a need to improve the tribological properties of nanoparticles. This paper highlights the current status and development trend of nanoparticles as lubricant additives in China. The factors influencing the tribological properties of nanoparticles, such as their composition, particle size and morphology, as well as the base stocks and their combination with other additives, are summarized. Furthermore, the research progress in the lubrication mechanism of nanoparticles is discussed, and the issues concerning the application of nanoparticles as lubricant additives as well as their future directions are discussed. This review is expected to provide an impetus to guide the design of high-performance, fully formulated lubricant systems containing nanoparticles as the lubricant additive. Full article

Sexual function worsens with advancing menopause status. The most frequently reported symptoms include low sexual desire (40–55%), poor lubrication (25–30%) and dyspareunia (12–45%), one of the complications of genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM). Declining levels of sex steroids (estrogens and androgens) play a major role in the impairment of sexual response; however, psychological and relational changes related with aging and an increase in metabolic and cardiovascular comorbidities should also be taken into account. Although first-line therapeutic strategies for menopause-related sexual dysfunction aim at addressing modifiable factors, many hormonal and non-hormonal, local and systemic treatment options are currently available. Treatment should be individualized, taking into account the severity of symptoms, potential adverse effects and personal preferences. Full article
