Electric trucks play a crucial role in achieving a zero-emission future. As battery electric technology advances, electric trucks are expected to become a cost-effective and sustainable alternative to diesel trucks. Long-haul trucks have unique driving patterns that affect their charging needs, and investigating the expected load profiles is fundamental to conducting a proper assessment of the impact of truck fleet electrification on the charging infrastructure. This article presents an agent-based modeling approach to estimate high-power charging station load profiles, leveraging open data and driver decision-making patterns. The methodology is implemented in a software tool, ABChargingSim, which includes heterogeneous charging logic (distinguishing between urgent mid-shift and long-dwell off-shift charging, as well as different driver triggers to initiate charging) alongside a vehicle’s SOC-dependent power tapering charging patterns. A case study along a Norwegian highway demonstrates the framework’s applicability for evaluating grid impacts under various heavy-duty transport electrification scenarios. The findings illustrate how driver behavior and heavy-duty vehicle charging processes shape expected load profiles, emphasizing the value of such simulation frameworks as essential decision-support tools for the strategic planning and operation of future high-power charging networks. In vehicle routing problems, long-distance transportation poses a significant challenge to the optimization of transportation costs while adhering to regulations. This study investigates a special type of logistics problem that focuses on liquid transportation systems involving full truckload delivery and the rest–break–drive periods of truck drivers over long distances according to the regulations of the United States. Based on an exact solution algorithm, this work combines a long-distance full truckload fluid transportation problem with the concept of truck driver schedules for the first time. The goal is to optimize transportation expenses while managing challenges related to the rest–break–drive periods of truck drivers, time windows, trailer varieties, customer segments, food and non-food products, a diverse fleet, starting locations, and the diverse tasks of vehicles. In order to reach optimality, a construction heuristic and the column generation method were employed, supplemented by several acceleration strategies. Performance analysis, carried out with artificial input sets mirroring real-life scenarios, indicates that low optimality gaps can be obtained in an appropriate amount of time for large-scale long-haul liquid transportation. Interest in improving roadside services for long-haul truckers’ health, safety, and well-being has led to an effort to describe the services offered at truck stop/rest areas. This study aimed to describe services offered in truck stop and rest areas and to determine, based on what was available, their implications for the health of long-haul truck drivers. A systematic and structured direct observation of thirteen truck stop and rest areas was undertaken within one state in the US on a major north–south interstate highway from October 2023 to June 2024. The categories of services observed included food, physical activity, rest, personal hygiene and health, and safety. A descriptive analysis of the data was performed. Seventeen visits were carried out in 13 truck stop and rest areas. All sites offered paved parking areas, with lighting and signage; 92% offered internet access; more than 85% offered food, safety, and personal hygiene services; 69% offered laundry services; 54% had a convenience store and hotel nearby; and 15% had green/natural areas with benches. The services offered at the truck stop and rest areas in this study meet the basic needs of food, personal hygiene, and safety of truckers and can serve as lessons for other states and countries to consider. With the rapid development of intelligent transportation systems, voice assistants are increasingly integrated into driving environments, providing an effective means to mitigate the risks of fatigued driving. This study explored drivers’ interaction preferences with voice assistants under different fatigue states and proposed a fatigue-state-based dialogue-awakening mechanism. Using Grounded Theory and the Stimulus–Organism–Response (SOR) framework, in-depth interviews were conducted with 25 drivers from diverse occupational backgrounds. To validate the qualitative findings, a driving simulation experiment was carried out to examine the effects of different voice interaction styles on driver fatigue arousal across various fatigue levels. Results indicated that heavily fatigued drivers preferred highly stimulating and interactive voice communication; mildly fatigued drivers tended toward gentle and socially supportive dialogue; while drivers in a non-fatigued state preferred minimal voice interference, activating voice assistance only when necessary. Significant occupational differences were also observed: long-haul truck drivers emphasized practicality and safety in voice assistants, taxi drivers favored voice interactions combining navigation and social content, and private car owners preferred personalized and emotional support. This study enriches the theoretical understanding of fatigue-sensitive voice interactions and provides practical guidance for the adaptive design of intelligent voice assistants, promoting their application in driving safety. (1) Background: This narrative review examines in-vehicle tobacco smoke exposure among private, occupational, and commercial drivers, focusing on prevalence, nicotine biomarkers, and health consequences. (2) Methods: A comprehensive search on the PubMed, Scopus, and Embase databases was used to identify peer-reviewed, full-text, and English articles published between 2014 and 2024. Search terms were related to motor vehicles, tobacco smoke exposure, and drivers. Articles were selected for inclusion based on their relevance to in-vehicle smoking and second- or third-hand smoke exposure attributable to tobacco cigarettes through article title, abstract, and full-text screening. (3) Results: This review highlights the dangers of in-vehicle second- or third-hand smoke exposure, evidenced by the 17 articles included. Significant second-hand smoke exposure and biomarkers were revealed mostly among adolescents and children. However, a gap exists in addressing tobacco smoke exposure among occupational/commercial drivers, specifically, long-haul truck drivers (LHTDs), who have heightened exposure due to their work environment—the truck cabin—which may increase their lung cancer risk. (4) Conclusions: There is a significant literature gap regarding in-vehicle tobacco smoke exposure in occupational/commercial drivers. The work and life routine of long-haul truck drivers (LHTDs) involve the use of truck stops and rest areas to meet their basic human needs. These extensions of their workspaces on the road do not always offer adequate physical structures and services that drivers need for optimal health. This study aimed to evaluate long-haul truck drivers’ perceptions of food services, safety, physical activity, rest, and personal hygiene offered at truck stops and rest areas, as well as the correlation between these perceptions and sociodemographic, health, and work conditions variables. A cross-sectional, quantitative, and descriptive study was conducted with long-haul truck drivers from the southern region of Brazil. For data collection, a sociodemographic questionnaire and a Likert scale on food, rest, personal hygiene, safety, and physical activity services offered at truck stops and rest areas along Brazilian roads from March to August 2023 were used. The data were analyzed with simple frequency descriptive statistics. The sample consisted of 175 long-haul truck drivers. Out of these, 70.29% declared that the services of the truck stops and rest areas were charged; more than half (53.59%) of the professionals evaluated the rest service as “good” or “excellent”; the food services were “good” or “excellent” for 42.24% of the drivers. The spaces for physical activities were the worst evaluated as “bad” or “terrible” by 41.61%, followed by bathroom services (28.42%) and safety (34.24%). Rest and feeding services had better evaluations, while the services of bathroom, safety, and physical activity presented worse evaluations. Variables such as nationality, weekly working days, and marital status presented positive significance and influenced drivers’ perceptions of the services offered at truck stops and rest areas. Drivers who were Brazilian and worked more than five days a week negatively evaluated the services of rest (p = 0.018), safety [0.020], physical activity (0.003), and bathrooms (0.020). In addition, the physical activity services were better evaluated by single drivers than married drivers. These findings suggest that the work conditions and nationality may influence LHTDs’ perceptions of services and structures of truck stops and rest areas. These findings may reflect a lack of investments and support efforts to improve basic services such as personal hygiene, a safe environment, and physical exercises, which are fundamental to the health of the workers and aimed at reducing vulnerability and a sedentary lifestyle and meeting the basic human needs of LHTDs. Long-haul truck drivers are responsible for transporting goods valued at millions of dollars of the world economy, and may have their health affected by living and working conditions. This study analyzed and synthesized scientific findings about risk factors for the development of chronic non-communicable diseases in long-haul truck drivers. An integrative literature review was conducted. We identified 23 studies that met the inclusion criteria and evaluated the health of 7363 drivers. The biological risk factors identified were age, gender, race/ethnicity, genetics, and comorbidities, and were considered to be non-modifiable for chronic diseases. The behavioral risks considered to be modifiable were sedentary lifestyle, smoking, alcohol consumption, overweight, diet, stress, anxiety, and unfavorable socioeconomic conditions. Environmental risks involved working conditions such as the following: number of working hours per day, week, and month; time away from home; risk of musculoskeletal injury; and opportunities for rest, hours of sleep, and access to health services. The results were presented in two categories: (1) biological, behavioral, and environmental risks, and (2) general recommendations to promote physical, cognitive, and emotional health. Macro-structural changes are needed to reorganize work and rest, improve access to health services to control modifiable risk factors, and to support behavioral and environmental changes to reduce chronic non-communicable diseases and deaths. A third of large truck crashes are associated with driver-related factors, especially speeding. This study aimed to examine the impact of behavior-based safety (BBS) programs on speeding. Speeding data were examined from a trucking fleet that had incorporated a BBS program using in-vehicle data recorders (IVDR) and post hoc feedback. Speeding events were examined over 37 weeks in two stages—an initial 4-week period (Stage 1), and the final 30 weeks (Stage 2). In Stage 1, data were collected without any feedback. In Stage 2, a subset of the drivers received feedback. A cluster analysis was performed based on the speeding event rate from Stage 1. The analysis yielded two clusters per group based on risk. The higher-risk cluster contained fewer drivers and showed a greater reduction in speeding with the BBS program, compared to the lower-risk cluster. Both clusters showed significant decreases in speeding across Stage 2. The BBS program was associated with reduced speeding, with a more pronounced reduction for the higher-risk drivers, highlighting the role of BBS programs in trucking and underscoring the importance of driver sub-groups. Targeted safety approaches may be more efficient and yield higher safety benefits than a one-size fits all approach. Full article

Battery electric trucks (BETs) represent a well-suited option for decarbonizing road freight transport to achieve climate targets in the European Union. However, lower ranges than the daily distance of up to 700 km make charging stops mandatory. This paper presents an online algorithm for optimal dynamic charging strategies for long-haul BET based on a dynamic programming approach. In several case studies, we investigate the advantages optimal strategies can bring compared to driver decisions. We further show which charging infrastructure characteristics in terms of charging power, density, and charging station availability should be achieved for BETs in long-haul applications to keep the additional time required for charging stops low. In doing so, we consider the dynamic handling of occupied charging stations for the first time in the context of BET. Our findings show that, compared to driver decisions, optimal charging strategies can reduce the time loss by half compared to diesel trucks. To keep the time loss compared to a diesel truck below 30 min a day, a BET with a 500 kWh battery would need a charging point every 50 km on average, a distributed charging power between 700 and 1500 kW, and an average charger availability above 75%. The presented method and the case studies’ results’ plausibility are interpreted within a comprehensive sensitivity analysis and subsequently discussed in detail. Finally, we transformed our findings into concrete recommendations for action for the efficient rollout of BETs in long-haul applications. Full article

Work characteristics and worker well-being are inextricably connected. In particular, the characteristics of work organization shape and perpetuate occupational stress, which contributes to worker mental health and well-being outcomes. Consequently, the importance of understanding and addressing connections between work organization, occupational stress, and mental health and well-being—the focus of this Special Issue—increasingly demand attention from those affected by these issues. Thus, focusing on these issues in the long-haul truck driver (LHTD) sector as an illustrative example, the purpose of this commentary is as follows: (1) to outline current research approaches and the extant knowledge base regarding the connections between work organization, occupational stress, and mental health; (2) to provide an overview of current intervention strategies and public policy solutions associated with the current knowledge base to protect and promote worker mental health and well-being; and (3) to propose a two-pronged agenda for advancing research and prevention for workers during the 21st century. It is anticipated that this commentary, and this Special Issue more broadly, will both echo numerous other calls for building knowledge and engaging in this area and motivate further research within complementary current and novel research frameworks. Work-related stress is a salient risk factor for depression. While long-haul truck drivers (LHTDs) face a myriad of occupational pressures and demands, little research has examined predictors of depressive symptoms in this occupational group. The purpose of this study was to identify predictors of depressive symptoms in LHTDs. A cross-sectional study was used to examine depressive symptoms, health and working conditions in a sample of 107 LHTDs (mean age of 50.7 ± 12.3; 95.6% were men) at truck stops from five Western Canadian cities. The findings show that 44% of LHTDs reported symptoms of depression in the past 12 months. Severe work-related stress, the use of psychiatric medications and broken sleep were significant predictors of depressive symptomology accounting for 41% of the variance. The findings suggest that LHTDs experience a host of occupational stressors that are embedded within the transportation industry that may increase the risk for depressive symptoms. Mental health promotion efforts that improve sleep quality, decrease work-related demands and pressures, and increase the use of psychiatric medication may reduce rates of depressive symptoms among LHTDs. Work-life balance and job stress are critical to health and well-being. Long-haul truck driving (LHTD) is among the unhealthiest and most unsafe occupations in the U.S. Despite these disparities, there are no extant published studies examining the influence of work, stress and sleep outcomes on drivers’ work-life balance. The current study investigated whether adverse work organization, stress, and poor sleep health among LHTDs are significantly associated with work-life conflict. Logistic regression was used to examine how work organization characteristics, job stress, and sleep influenced perceived stress and a composite measure of work-life conflict among a sample of 260 U.S. LHTDs. The pattern of regression results dictated subsequent analyses using structural equation modeling (SEM). Perceived job stress was the only statistically significant predictor for work-life balance. Fast pace of work, sleep duration and sleep quality were predictors of perceived job stress. SEM further elucidated that stress mediates the influences of fast work pace, supervisor/coworker support, and low sleep duration on each of the individual work-life balance indicators. There is an urgent need to address work conditions of LHTDs to better support their health, well-being, and work-life balance. Specifically, the findings from this study illustrate that scheduling practices and sleep outcomes could alleviate job stress and need to be addressed to more effectively support work-life balance. Future research and interventions should focus on policy and systems-level change. Full article

The use of heavy-duty battery electric trucks for long-haul transportation is challenging because of the required high energy amounts and thus the high capacity of traction batteries. Furthermore a high capacity battery implies high initial costs for the electric vehicle. This study investigates the required battery capacity for battery electric trucks considering the requirements of long-haul transportation in Germany and compares the life cycle costs of battery electric trucks and conventional diesel trucks in different transportation scenarios. The average consumption is simulated for different battery electric truck configurations on the main German highways and transportation scenarios incorporating battery charging during driver rest periods. The results show that in average case the required battery would restrict the payload to only 80% of a usual diesel truck payload that might be acceptable considering the statistical payload use. The life cycle costs in the examined scenarios also considering the charging infrastructure show that battery electric trucks can already perform on the same costs level as diesel trucks in certain scenarios. A total of 129 truckloads were observed at one of two commercial rest stations near Thunder Bay, Ontario. Data collected included information regarding the truck driver, the trailer, the trip, the animals and animal handling. The majority of the loads stopping were feeder calves (60.94%) while 21.09% were weaned calves, and the remaining 14.84% were market weight cattle. The truck loads surveyed were in transit for, on average, 28.2 ± 5.0 hours before stopping and cattle were rested for an average of 11.2 ± 2.8 hours. These data suggest that loads stopping at the rest station were adhering to the regulations stated in the Health of Animals Act, which outline a maximum of 48 hours in transit before a mandatory stop of at least 5 hours for feed, water and rest. There was a large amount of variability around how well recommendations, such as stocking density were followed. Further research is required to assess how well cattle are coping with long-distance transport under current regulations and industry practices. Full article

Road accident statistics from different countries show that a significant number of accidents occur due to driver’s fatigue and lack of awareness to traffic conditions. In particular, about 60% of the accidents in which long haul truck and bus drivers are involved are attributed to drowsiness and fatigue. It is thus fundamental to improve non-invasive systems for sensing a driver’s state of alert. One of the main challenges to correctly resolve the state of alert is measuring the percentage of eyelid closure over time (PERCLOS), despite the driver’s head and body movements. In this paper, we propose a technique that involves optical flow and driver’s kinematics analysis to improve the robustness of the driver’s alert state measurement under pose changes using a single camera with near-infrared illumination. The proposed approach infers and keeps track of the driver’s pose in 3D space in order to ensure that eyes can be located correctly, even after periods of partial occlusion, for example, when the driver stares away from the camera. Our experiments show the effectiveness of the approach with a correct eyes detection rate of 99.41%, on average. The results obtained with the proposed approach in an experiment involving fifteen persons under different levels of sleep deprivation also confirm the discriminability of the fatigue levels. In addition to the measurement of fatigue and drowsiness, the pose tracking capability of the proposed approach has potential applications in distraction assessment and alerting of machine operators.
