Bioconversion of Olive Pomace: A Solid-State Fermentation Strategy with Aspergillus sp. for Detoxification and Enzyme Production

This study aimed to evaluate solid-state fermentation (SSF) as a sustainable approach for the simultaneous detoxification of olive pomace (OP) and the production of industrially relevant enzymes. OP, a semisolid byproduct of olive oil extraction, is rich in lignocellulose and phenolic compounds, which limit its direct reuse due to phytotoxicity. A native strain of Aspergillus sp., isolated from OP, was employed as the biological agent, while grape pomace (GP) was added as a co-substrate to enhance substrate structure. Fermentations were conducted at two scales, Petri dishes (20 g) and a fixed-bed bioreactor (FBR, 2 kg), under controlled conditions (25 °C, 7 days). Key parameters monitored included dry and wet weight loss, pH, color, phenolic content, and enzymatic activity. Significant reductions in color and polyphenol content were achieved, reaching 68% in Petri dishes and 88.1% in the FBR, respectively. In the FBR, simultaneous monitoring of dry and wet weight loss enabled the estimation of fungal biotransformation, revealing a hysteresis phenomenon not previously reported in SSF studies. Enzymes such as xylanase, endopolygalacturonase, cellulase, and tannase exhibited peak activities between 150 and 180 h, with maximum values of 424.6 U·g−1, 153.6 U·g−1, 67.43 U·g−1, and 6.72 U·g−1, respectively. The experimental data for weight loss, enzyme production, and phenolic reduction were accurately described by logistic and first-order models. These findings demonstrate the high metabolic efficiency of the fungal isolate under SSF conditions and support the feasibility of scaling up this process. The proposed strategy offers a low-cost and sustainable solution for OP valorization, aligning with circular economy principles by transforming agro-industrial residues into valuable bioproducts. Accomplishing China’s national targets of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality necessitates proactive solutions, hinging critically on fundamentally transforming rural construction models. Current construction practices in rural areas are characterized by inefficiency, high resource consumption, and reliance on imported materials. These shortcomings not only jeopardize the attainment of climate objectives, but also hinder equitable development between urban and rural regions. Using the Digital Industrial Park in Yongtai County, Fuzhou City, as a case study, this study focuses on prefabricated public buildings in regions with extreme hot–humid climate, and innovatively integrates BIM (Building Information Modeling)-driven carbon modeling with the Gaussian Two-Step Floating Catchment Area (G2SFCA) method for spatial accessibility assessment to investigate the carbon emissions and economic benefits of prefabricated buildings during the embodied stage, and analyzes the spatial accessibility of prefabricated building material suppliers in Fuzhou City and identifies associated bottlenecks, seeking pathways to promote sustainable rural revitalization. Compared with traditional cast-in-situ buildings, embodied carbon emissions of prefabricated during their materialization phase significantly reduced. This dual-perspective approach ensures that the proposed solutions possess both technical rigor and logistical feasibility. Promoting this model across rural areas sharing similar climatic conditions would advance the construction industry’s progress towards the dual carbon goals. Full article

In this paper, a novel online detection system is designed to enhance accuracy and operational efficiency in the outbound logistics of automotive components after production. The system consists of a scanning portal system and an improved YOLOv12-based detection algorithm which captures images of automotive parts passing through the scanning portal in real time. By integrating deep learning, the system enables real-time monitoring and identification, thereby preventing misdetections and missed detections of automotive parts, in this way promoting intelligent automotive part recognition and detection. Our system introduces the A2C2f-SA module, which achieves an efficient feature attention mechanism while maintaining a lightweight design. Additionally, Dynamic Space-to-Depth (Dynamic S2D) is employed to improve convolution and replace the stride convolution and pooling layers in the baseline network, helping to mitigate the loss of fine-grained information and enhancing the network’s feature extraction capability. To improve real-time performance, a GFL-MBConv lightweight detection head is proposed. Furthermore, adaptive frequency-aware feature fusion (Adpfreqfusion) is hybridized at the end of the neck network to effectively enhance high-frequency information lost during downsampling, thereby improving the model’s detection accuracy for target objects in complex backgrounds. On-site tests demonstrate that the system achieves a comprehensive accuracy of 97.3% and an average vehicle detection time of 7.59 s, exhibiting not only high precision but also high detection efficiency. These results can make the proposed system highly valuable for applications in the automotive industry. Full article

In lace textile manufacturing, the dyeing process in parallel machine environments faces challenges from sequence-dependent setup times due to color family transitions, machine eligibility constraints based on weight capacities, and probabilistic re-dyeing operations arising from quality inspection failures, which often lead to increased tardiness. To tackle this multi-constrained problem, a stochastic integer programming model is formulated to minimize total estimated tardiness. A novel symmetry-driven two-population collaborative differential evolution (TCDE) algorithm is then proposed. It features two symmetrically complementary subpopulations that achieve a balance between global exploration and local exploitation. One subpopulation employs chaotic parameter adaptation through a logistic map for symmetrically enhanced exploration, while the other adjusts parameters based on population diversity and convergence speed to facilitate symmetry-aware exploitation. Moreover, it also incorporates a symmetrical collaborative mechanism that includes the periodic migration of top individuals between subpopulations, along with elite-set guidance, to enhance both population diversity and convergence efficiency. Extensive computational experiments were conducted on 21 small-scale (optimally validated via CVX) and 15 large-scale synthetic datasets, as well as 21 small-scale (similarly validated) and 20 large-scale industrial datasets. These experiments demonstrate that TCDE significantly outperforms state-of-the-art comparative methods. Ablation studies also further verify the critical role of its symmetry-based components, with computational results confirming its superiority in solving the considered problem. Full article

This study investigates the influence of corporate governance on reducing financial statement fraud (FSF) in Jordanian service and industrial companies listed on the Amman Stock Exchange from 2018 to 2022. To achieve this, the study employed the Beneish M-score model to assess the likelihood of FSF and logistic regression to examine the influence of corporate governance structure on fraud mitigation. The study identified 13 independent variables, including board size, board director’s independence, board director’s compensation, non-duality of CEO and chairman positions, board diversity, audit committee size, audit committee accounting background, number of annual audit committee meetings, external audit fees, board family business, the presence of women on the board of directors, firm size, and market listing on FSF. The study included 74 companies from both sectors—33 from the industrial sector and 41 from the service sector. Primary data was collected from financial statements and other information published in annual reports between 2018 and 2022. The results of the study revealed a total of 295 cases of fraud during the examined period. Out of the 59 companies analyzed, 21.4% demonstrated a low probability of fraud, while the remaining 78.6% (232 observations) showed a high probability of fraud. The results indicate that the following corporate governance factors significantly impact the mitigation of financial statement fraud (FSF): independent board directors, board diversity, audit committee accounting backgrounds, the number of audit committee meetings, family business involvement on the board, and firm characteristics. The study provides several recommendations, highlighting the importance for companies to diversify their boards of directors by incorporating different perspectives and experiences. Full article

The logistics industry faces challenges from evolving consumer expectations, technological advances, sustainability demands, and market disruptions. Logistics collaboration is in theory perceived as one of the most promising solutions to solve these issues, but here are still a lot of challenges that needs to be better understood and addressed. While vertical collaboration among supply chain actors is well advanced, horizontal collaboration among competing service providers remains under-explored. This study developed a novel methodology based on the COM-B behaviour-change framework to better understand the main challenges, opportunities, capabilities and drivers that would motivate competing companies to exploit the potential of horizontal logistics collaboration. A survey was designed and conducted among 71 logistics service providers in Slovenia, chosen for its fragmented market and low willingness to collaborate. Statistical analysis reveals cost reduction (M = 4.21/5) and improved vehicle utilization (M = 4.29/5) as the primary motivators. On the other hand, maintaining company reputation (M = 4.64/5), fair resource sharing (M = 4.20/5), and transparency of logistics processes (M = 4.17/5) all persist as key enabling conditions. These findings underscore the pivotal role of behavioural drivers and suggest strategies that combine economic incentives with targeted trust-building measures. Future research should employ experimental designs in diverse national contexts and integrate vertical–horizontal approaches to validate causal pathways and advance theory. Full article

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI), big data analytics, and blockchain technologies within the digital economy presents transformative opportunities for promoting low-carbon urban development. However, a systematic understanding of how these digital innovations influence urban carbon mitigation remains limited. This study addresses this gap by proposing two research questions (RQs): (1) What are the key success factors for artificial intelligence, big data, and blockchain in urban carbon emission reduction? (2) How do these technologies interact and support the transition to low-carbon cities? To answer these questions, the study employs a hybrid methodological framework combining the decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) and interpretive structural modeling (ISM) techniques. The data were collected through structured expert questionnaires, enabling the identification and hierarchical analysis of twelve critical success factors (CSFs). Grounded in sustainability transitions theory and institutional theory, the CSFs are categorized into three dimensions: (1) digital infrastructure and technological applications; (2) digital transformation of industry and economy; (3) sustainable urban governance. The results reveal that e-commerce and sustainable logistics, the adoption of the circular economy, and cross-sector collaboration are the most influential drivers of digital-enabled decarbonization, while foundational elements such as smart energy systems and digital infrastructure act as key enablers. The DEMATEL-ISM approach facilitates a system-level understanding of the causal relationships and strategic priorities among the CSFs, offering actionable insights for urban planners, policymakers, and stakeholders committed to sustainable digital transformation and carbon neutrality. As the climate problem is getting more and more serious and the “low-carbon revolution” of globalization is emerging, the logistics industry, as a high-end service industry, must also take the road of low-carbon development. Improving logistics carbon emission efficiency (LCEE) is gradually becoming an inevitable choice to maintain sustainable social development. The study uses the Super-SBM (Super-Slack-Based Measure) model to evaluate the urban LCEE from 2013 to 2022, explores the contribution of efficiency changes and technological progress to LCEE through the decomposition of the GML (Global Malmquist–Luenberger) index, and reveals the influence of digital transformation and energy consumption structure on LCEE by using the Spatial Durbin Model, concluding as follows: (1) LCEE declines from east to west, with large regional differences. (2) LCEE has steadily increased over the past decade, with slower growth from east to west. It fell in 2020 due to COVID-19 but has since recovered. (3) LCEE shows a catching-up effect among the three major regions, with technological progress being a key driver of improvement. (4) LCEE has significant spatial dependence. Energy consumption structure has a short-term negative spillover effect, while digital transformation has a positive spillover effect. Full article

Background: Gold mining is a critical part of the industry of Central Asia, contributing significantly to regional economic growth. However, gold production management faces numerous challenges, including adopting innovative technologies such as AI, using improved logistical equipment, resolving supply chain inefficiencies and disruptions, and incorporating modernized waste management and advancements in gold bar processing technologies. This study explores how advanced technologies and improved logistical processes can enhance efficiency and sustainability. Method: This paper examines gold production processes in Kyrgyzstan, a gold-producing country in Central Asia. The case study approach combines qualitative interviews with industry stakeholders and a system dynamics (SD) simulation model to compare current operations with a technology-based scenario. Results: The simulation model shows improved outcomes when innovative technologies are applied to ore processing, waste refinement, and gold bar production. The results also indicate an approximate twenty-five percent reduction in transport time, a thirty percent decrease in equipment downtime, a thirty percent reduction in emissions, and a fifteen percent increase in gold extraction when using artificial intelligence, smart logistics, and regional smelting. Conclusions: The study concludes with recommendations to modernize equipment, localize processing, and invest in digital logistics to support sustainable mining and improve operational performance in Kyrgyzstan’s gold sector. A Proactive Predictive Model for Machine Failure Forecasting

Unexpected machine failures in industrial environments lead to high maintenance costs, unplanned downtime, and safety risks. This study proposes a proactive predictive model using a hybrid of eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) and Neural Networks (NN) to forecast machine failures. A synthetic dataset capturing recent breakdown history and time since last failure was used to simulate industrial scenarios. To address class imbalance, SMOTE and class weighting were applied, alongside a focal loss function to emphasize difficult-to-classify failures. The XGBoost model was tuned via GridSearchCV, while the NN model utilized ReLU-activated hidden layers with dropout. Evaluation using stratified 5-fold cross-validation showed that the NN achieved an F1-score of 0.7199 and a recall of 0.9545 for the minority class. XGBoost attained a higher PR AUC of 0.7126 and a more balanced precision–recall trade-off. Sample predictions demonstrated strong recall (100%) for failures, but also a high false positive rate, with most prediction probabilities clustered between 0.50–0.55. Additional benchmarking against Logistic Regression, Random Forest, and SVM further confirmed the superiority of the proposed hybrid model. Model interpretability was enhanced using SHAP and LIME, confirming that recent breakdowns and time since last failure were key predictors. While the model effectively detects failures, further improvements in feature engineering and threshold tuning are recommended to reduce false alarms and boost decision confidence. Full article

The production of bio-based products for different purposes has become an increasingly common strategy over the last few decades, both in Europe and worldwide. This trend seeks to contribute to mitigating the impacts associated with climate change and to cope with the ambitious objectives established at European level. Over recent decades, agro-industries have shown significant potential as biomass suppliers, triggering the development of robust logistical supply chains and the valorization of by-products to obtain bio-based products that can be marketed at competitive prices. However, this transformation may, in some cases, involve restructuring traditional business model to incorporate the biorefinery concept. In this sense, the first step in developing a bio-based value chain involves assessing the resource’s availability and characterizing the feedstock to select the valorization pathway and the bio-application with the greatest potential. The paper incorporates inputs from a case study on PATURPAT, a company commercializing a wide range of ready-prepared potato products, which has commissioned a starch extraction facility to process the rejected pieces of potatoes and water from the process to obtain starch that can be further valorized for different bio-applications. This study aims to comprehensively review current trends and frameworks for potatoes processing agro-industries and define the most suitable bio-applications to target, as well as identify opportunities and challenges. The rapid development of the logistics industry has underscored the urgent need for efficient and sustainable urban freight systems. As a core component of freight systems, heavy-duty trucks (HDT) have been researched regarding surface-level descriptive statistics of their heterogeneities, such as trip volume, frequency, etc., but there is a lack of in-depth analyses of the spatial interaction between freight travel and freight functional clustering, which restricts a systematic understanding of freight systems. Against this backdrop, this study develops a data-driven framework to analyze HDT behavioral heterogeneity and its spatial interactions with a freight functional zone in Shanghai. Leveraging the high-frequency trajectory data of nearly 160,000 HDTs across seven types, we construct a set of regional indicators and employ hierarchical clustering, dividing the city into six freight functional zones. Combined with the HDTs’ application scenarios, functional characteristics, and trip distributions, we further analyze the spatial interaction between the HDTs and clustered zones. The results show that HDT travel patterns are not merely responses to freight demand but complex reflections of urban industrial structures, infrastructure networks, and policy environments. By embedding vehicle behaviors within their spatial and functional contexts, this study reveals a layered freight system in which each HDT type plays a distinct role in supporting economic activities. This research provides a new perspective for deeply understanding the formation mechanisms of HDT trip distributions and offers critical evidence for promoting targeted freight management strategies. This paper concentrates on the valuation of big data assets within the digital transformation of logistics enterprises. As data evolve into a core production factor in the logistics industry, their valuation is essential, not only for enterprises’ resource allocation decisions, but also as a key indicator for measuring the effectiveness of digital transformation. This paper combines the multiperiod excess earnings model with the analytic hierarchy process (AHP), creating an evaluation system through a comprehensive weighting method. Initially, the multiperiod excess earnings model is used to calculate the excess earnings of off-balance-sheet intangible assets. The AHP is subsequently applied to construct a hierarchical structural model of the enterprise, identifying the core factors that influence the excess earnings of off-balance-sheet intangible assets. This allows for precise segmentation and determination of the distribution rate of the value of data assets. The evaluation model fully accounts for the diversity, dynamics, and potential value of big data assets, effectively identifying and quantifying factors that are not easily observable directly. The findings not only provide a novel evaluation tool for data asset management in logistics enterprises but also offer theoretical support and practical guidance for enhancing the industry’s data asset valuation system and facilitating the realization of data asset value. Background: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a major global health concern influenced by sociodemographic and lifestyle factors. This study compared T2D risk scores between commerce and industry sectors and assessed the associations of age, sex, education, physical activity, diet, and smoking with elevated risk. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 56,856 men and 12,872 women employed in the commerce (n = 27,448) and industry (n = 42,280) sectors across Spain. Anthropometric, clinical, and biochemical data were collected. Four validated T2D risk scores (QDscore, Finrisk, Canrisk, and TRAQ-D) were calculated. Multinomial logistic regression models estimated adjusted odds ratios (ORs) for high-risk categories by sociodemographic and lifestyle characteristics. Results: Women in the industrial sector had significantly higher age, BMI, waist circumference, and lipid levels than those in commerce; differences among men were less marked. Across all participants, higher T2D risk scores were independently associated with physical inactivity (OR up to 12.49), poor Mediterranean diet adherence (OR up to 6.62), industrial employment (OR up to 1.98), and older age. Male sex was strongly associated with high Canrisk scores (OR = 6.31; 95% CI: 5.12–7.51). Conclusions: Employment in the industrial sector, combined with sedentary behavior and poor dietary habits, is independently associated with higher predicted T2D risk. Workplace prevention strategies should prioritize multicomponent interventions targeting modifiable risk factors, especially in high-risk subgroups such as older, less-educated, and inactive workers. In response to growing environmental pressures and material constraints, circular economy principles are gaining traction across manufacturing sectors. However, most existing frameworks emphasize design and supply chain considerations, with limited focus on how circularity can be operationalized within internal manufacturing systems. This paper proposes a conceptual model that embeds circular operations at the core of production strategy. Grounded in circular economy theory, operations management, and socio-technical systems thinking, the model identifies four key operational pillars: circular input management, looping process and waste valorization, product-life extension, and reverse logistics. These are supported by enabling factors—digital infrastructure, organizational culture, and leadership—and mediated by operational flexibility, which facilitates adaptive, closed-loop performance. The model aims to align internal processes with long-term sustainability outcomes, specifically resource efficiency and operational resilience. Practical implications are outlined for resource-intensive industries such as automotive, electronics, and FMCG, along with a readiness assessment framework for guiding implementation. This study offers a pathway for future empirical research and policy development by integrating circular logic into the structural and behavioral dimensions of operations. The model contributes to advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 9 and SDG 12, by positioning circularity as a regenerative operational strategy rather than a peripheral initiative.
