This paper analyzes the availability of lithium resources required to support a global decarbonized energy system featuring electrical energy storage based on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. A net-zero carbon grid consisting of existing nuclear and hydro capacity, with the balance being a 50/50 mix of wind and solar power generation, is assumed to satisfy projected world electrical demand in 2050, incorporating the electrification of transportation. The battery electrical storage capacity needed to support this grid is estimated and translated into the required number of nominal 10 MWh LFP storage plants similar to the ones currently in operation. The total lithium required for the global storage system is determined from the number of nominal plants and the inventory of lithium in each plant. The energy required to refine this amount of lithium is accounted for in the estimation of the total lithium requirement. Comparison of the estimated lithium requirements with known global lithium resources indicates that a global storage system consisting only of LFP plants would require only around 12.3% of currently known lithium reserves in a high-economic-growth scenario. The overall cost for a global LFP-based grid-scale energy storage system is estimated to be approximately USD 17 trillion. Full article

The estimation of the state of health (SOH) of lithium-ion batteries is a critical technology for enhancing battery lifespan and safety. When estimating SOH, it is essential to select representative features, commonly referred to as health indicators (HIs). Most existing studies primarily focus on HIs related to capacity degradation and internal resistance increase. However, due to the complexity of lithium-ion battery degradation mechanisms, the relationships between these mechanisms and health indicators remain insufficiently explored. This paper provides a comprehensive review of core methodologies for SOH estimation, with a particular emphasis on the classification and extraction of health indicators, direct measurement techniques, model-based and data-driven SOH estimation approaches, and emerging trends in battery management system applications. The findings indicate that capacity, internal resistance, and temperature-related indicators significantly impact SOH estimation accuracy, while machine learning models demonstrate advantages in multi-source data fusion. Future research should further explore composite health indicators and aging mechanisms of novel battery materials, and improve the interpretability of predictive models. This study offers theoretical support for the intelligent management and lifespan optimization of lithium-ion batteries. Full article

This article presents a comparative study of the storage of energy produced by photovoltaic panels by means of two types of batteries: Lead–Acid and Lithium-Ion batteries. The work involved the construction of a model in MATLAB-Simulink for controlling the loading/unloading of storage batteries with energy produced by photovoltaic panels through a buck-type DC-DC convertor, controlled by means of the MPPT algorithm implemented through the method of incremental conductance based on a MATLAB function. The program for the MATLAB function was developed by the author in the C++ programming environment. The MPPT algorithm provides maximum energy transfer from the photovoltaic panels to the battery. The electric power taken over at a certain moment by Lithium-Ion batteries in photovoltaic panels is higher than the electric power taken over by Lead–Acid batteries. Two types of batteries were successively used in this model: Lead–Acid and Lithium-Ion batteries. Based on the results being obtained and presented in this work it may be affirmed that the storage battery Lithium-Ion is more performant than the Lead-Acid storage battery. At the Laboratory of Electrical Machinery and Drives of the Engineering Faculty of Bacau, an experimental stand was built for a storing system for electric energy produced by photovoltaic panels. For controlling DC-DC buck-type convertors, a program was developed in the programming environment Arduino IDE for implementing the MPPT algorithm for incremental conductance. The simulation part of this program is similar to that of the program developed in C++. Through conducting experiments, it was observed that, during battery charging, along with an increase in the charging voltage, an increase in the filling factor of the PWM signal controlling the buck DC-DC convertor also occurred. The findings of this study may be applicable to the storage of battery-generated electrical energy used for supplying electrical motors in electric cars. Full article

This paper presents a novel data-driven framework for real-time State of Charge (SOC) estimation in lithium-ion battery systems using a data-driven Prognostics and Health Management (PHM) approach. The method leverages an optimized bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (Bi-LSTM) network, trained with enhanced datasets filtered via exponentially weighted moving averages (EWMAs) and refined through SHAP-based feature attribution. Compared against a Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) and Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) across ten diverse drive cycles, the proposed model consistently achieved superior performance, with mean absolute errors (MAEs) as low as 0.40%, outperforming EKF (0.66%) and UKF (1.36%). The Bi-LSTM model also demonstrated higher R2 values (up to 0.9999) and narrower 95% confidence intervals, confirming its precision and robustness. Real-time implementation on embedded platforms yielded inference times of 1.3–2.2 s, validating its deployability for edge applications. The framework’s model-free nature makes it adaptable to other nonlinear, time-dependent systems beyond battery SOC estimation. Full article

The energy generated from renewable sources has an intermittent nature since solar irradiation and wind speed vary continuously. Hence, their energy should be stored to be utilized throughout their shortage. There are various forms of energy storage systems while the most widespread technique is the battery storage system since its cost is low compared to other techniques. Therefore, batteries are employed in several applications like power systems, electric vehicles, and smart grids. Due to the merits of the lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery, it is preferred over other kinds of batteries. However, the accuracy of the Li-ion battery model is essential for estimating the state of charge (SOC). Additionally, it is essential for consistent simulation and operation throughout various loading and charging conditions. Consequently, the determination of real battery model parameters is vital. An innovative application of the red-billed blue magpie optimizer (RBMO) for determining the model parameters and the SOC of the Li-ion battery is presented in this article. The Shepherd model parameters are determined using the suggested optimization algorithm. The RBMO-based modeling approach offers excellent execution in determining the parameters of the battery model. The suggested approach is compared to other programmed algorithms, namely dandelion optimizer, spider wasp optimizer, barnacles mating optimizer, and interior search algorithm. Moreover, the suggested RBMO is statistically evaluated using Kruskal–Wallis, ANOVA tables, Friedman rank, and Wilcoxon rank tests. Additionally, the Li-ion battery model estimated via the RBMO is validated under variable loading conditions. The fetched results revealed that the suggested approach achieved the least errors between the measured and estimated voltages compared to other approaches in two studied cases with values of 1.4951 × 10−4 and 2.66176 × 10−4. Energy storage technology is crucial for addressing the intermittency of renewable energy sources and plays a key role in power systems and electronic devices. In the field of energy storage systems, multivalent vanadium-based oxides have attracted widespread attention. Among these, vanadium dioxide (VO2) is distinguished by its key advantages, including high theoretical capacity, low cost, and strong structural designability. The diverse crystalline structures and plentiful natural reserves of VO2 offer a favorable foundation for facilitating charge transfer and regulating storage behavior during energy storage processes. This mini review provides an overview of the latest progress in VO2-based materials for energy storage applications, specifically highlighting their roles in lithium-ion batteries, zinc-ion batteries, photoassisted batteries, and supercapacitors. Particular attention is given to their electrochemical properties, structural integrity, and prospects for development. Additionally, it explores future development directions to offer theoretical insights and strategic guidance for ongoing research and industrial application of VO2. Full article

Accurate assessment of the state of health (SOH) of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is fundamental to ensuring safe operation. However, due to the complex electrochemical processes during battery operation and the limited availability of training data, accurate estimation of the state of health remains challenging. To address this, this paper proposes a prediction framework based on dual-view voltage signal features and an improved Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural network. By relying solely on readily obtainable voltage signals, the data requirement is greatly reduced; dual-view features, comprising kinetic and aggregated aspects, are extracted based on the underlying reaction mechanisms. To fully leverage the extracted feature information, Scaled Dot-Product Attention (SDPA) is employed to dynamically score all hidden states of the long short-term memory network, adaptively capturing key temporal information. The experimental results based on the NASA PCoE battery dataset indicate that, under various operating conditions, the proposed method achieves an average absolute error below 0.51% and a root mean square error not exceeding 0.58% in state-of-health estimation, demonstrating high predictive accuracy. This study aims to develop a method for analyzing real-world battery degradation in electric vehicles in order to identify the optimal battery management system (BMS) during the early digital phase of vehicle development. Battery management of lithium-ion batteries (LiBs) in electric vehicles is important to ensure a stable output and to counteract degradation and thermal runaway. To design the optimal system, it is most effective to use a 1D (one-dimensional) vehicle system simulation model, which connects each unit model inside the vehicle, due to the system’s complexity. In order to create a long-term degradation simulation in a vehicle system model, it is important to reduce computational load. Therefore, in this paper, we studied a suitable battery degradation calculation for the vehicle system model based on an equivalent circuit model (ECM) and degradation approximation formulas. After implementing these models, we analyzed long-term degradation behavior through the real-world operation of an electric vehicle driver. We first implemented a high-accuracy ECM using transient charge–discharge tests and Bayesian Optimization. Next, we formulated approximation formulas for degradation prediction based on calendar and cycle degradation tests. Finally, we simulated real-world degradation behavior using these models. The simulation results revealed that even for users who frequently use electric vehicles, degradation under storage conditions is the dominant factor in overall degradation. Full article

Pilot production is a critical transitional phase in the process of new product development or manufacturing, aiming at ensuring that products are thoroughly validated and optimized before entering full-scale production. During this stage, a key challenge is how to leverage limited resources to build data infrastructure and conduct data analysis to establish and verify quality control. This paper presents the implementation of a cyber–physical system (CPS) for a lithium battery pilot assembly line. A machine learning-based predictive model was employed to establish quality control mechanisms. Process knowledge-guided data analysis was utilized to build a quality prediction model based on the collected battery data. The model-centric concept of ‘virtual quality’ enables early quality judgment during production, which allows for flexible quality control and the determination of optimal process parameters, thereby reducing production costs and minimizing energy consumption during manufacturing. Lithium-ion batteries (LiBs) are utilized in numerous applications due to advancements in technology, and the recovery of end-of-life (EoL) LiBs is imperative for environmental and economic reasons. Pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical methods have been used in the recovery of metals such as Li, Co, and Ni in the EoL LiBs. Hydrometallurgical methods, which have been demonstrated to exhibit higher recovery efficiency and reduced energy consumption, have garnered increased attention in recent research. Inorganic acids, including HCl, HNO3, and H2SO4, as well as organic acids such as acetic acid and citric acid, are employed in the hydrometallurgical recovery of these metals. It is imperative to acknowledge the environmental hazards posed by these acids. Consequently, solvometallurgical processes, which involve the use of organic solvents with minimal or no water, are gaining increasing attention as alternative or complementary techniques to conventional hydrometallurgical processes. In the context of solvent systems that have been examined for a range of solvometallurgical methods, deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have garnered particular interest due to their low toxicity, biodegradable nature, tunable properties, and efficient metal recovery potential. In this study, the leaching process of black mass containing graphite, LCO, NMC, and LMO was carried out in a short time using the ternary DES system. The ternary DES system consists of choline chloride (ChCl), glycolic acid (GLY), and ascorbic acid (AA). As a result of the leaching process of cathode powders in the black mass without any pre-enrichment process, Li, Co, Ni, and Mn elements passed into solution with an efficiency of over 95% at 60 °C and within 1 h. Moreover, the kinetics of the leaching process was investigated, and Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations were used to explain the leaching mechanism. Full article

As lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) gain widespread use, detecting electrolyte–vapor emissions during early thermal runaway (TR) remains critical to ensuring battery safety; yet, it remains understudied. Gas sensors integrating oxide nanostructures offer a promising solution as they possess high sensitivity and fast response, enabling rapid detection of various gas-phase indicators of battery failure. Utilizing this approach, 3D ordered tin oxide (SnO2) nanostructures were synthesized using polystyrene sphere (PS) templates of varied diameters (200–1500 nm) and precursor concentrations (0.2–0.6 mol/L) to detect key electrolyte–vapors, especially ethyl methyl carbonate (EMC), released in the early stages of TR. The 3D ordered SnO2 nanostructures with ring- and nanonet-like morphologies, formed after PS template removal, were characterized, and the effects of template size and precursor concentration on their structure and sensing performance were investigated. Among various nanostructures of SnO2, nanonets achieved by a 1000 nm PS template and 0.4 mol/L precursor showed higher mesoporosity (~28 nm) and optimal EMC detection. At 210 °C, it detected 10 ppm EMC with a response of ~7.95 and response/recovery times of 14/17 s, achieving a 500 ppb detection limit alongside excellent reproducibility/stability. This study demonstrates that precise structural control of SnO2 nanostructures using templates enables sensitive EMC detection, providing an effective sensor-based strategy to enhance LIB safety. In applications where it is crucial that a battery is recharged from the partially discharged state in the minimum time, it is crucial to honor the technological constraints related to maximum safe battery terminal voltage and maximum continuous charging current prescribed by the battery cell manufacturer. To this end, this contribution outlines the design and comprehensive simulation analysis of an adaptive battery charging system relying on battery open-circuit voltage estimation in real time. A pseudo-random binary sequence test signal and model reference adaptive system are used for the estimation of lithium titanate battery cell electrical circuit model parameters, with the design methodology based on the Lyapunov stability criterion. The proposed adaptive charger is assessed against the conventional constant-current/constant-voltage charging system. The effectiveness of the real-time parameter estimator, along with both the adaptive and traditional charging systems for the lithium titanate battery cell, is validated through simulations and experiments on a dedicated battery test bench. A State of Health (SOH) estimation of lithium-ion batteries is a core function of battery management systems, directly affecting the safe operation, lifetime prediction, and economic efficiency of batteries. However, existing methods still face challenges in balancing feature robustness and model generalization ability; for instance, some studies rely on features whose physical correlation with SOH lacks strict verification, or the models struggle to simultaneously capture the temporal dynamics of health factors and nonlinear mapping relationships. To address this, this paper proposes an SOH estimation method based on incremental capacity (IC) curves and a Temporal Convolutional Network—Relevance Vector Machine (TCN-RVM) model, with core innovations reflected in two aspects. Firstly, five health factors are extracted from IC curves, and the strong correlation between these features and SOH is verified using both Pearson and Spearman coefficients, ensuring the physical rationality and statistical significance of feature selection. Secondly, the TCN-RVM model is constructed to achieve complementary advantages. The dilated causal convolution of TCN is used to extract temporal local features of health factors, addressing the insufficient capture of long-range dependencies in traditional models; meanwhile, the Bayesian inference framework of RVM is integrated to enhance the nonlinear mapping capability and small-sample generalization, avoiding the overfitting tendency of complex models. Experimental validation is conducted using the lithium-ion battery dataset from the University of Maryland. The results show that the mean absolute error of the SOH estimation using the proposed method does not exceed 0.72%, which is significantly superior to comparative models such as CNN-GRU, KELM, and SVM, demonstrating higher accuracy and reliability compared with other models. Photocuring, including photopolymerization and photocrosslinking, has emerged as a transformative manufacturing paradigm that enables the precise, rapid, and customizable fabrication of advanced battery components. This review first introduces the principles of photocuring and vat photopolymerization and their unique advantages of high process efficiency, non-contact fabrication, ambient-temperature processing, and robust interlayer bonding. It then systematically summarizes photocured battery components, involving electrolytes, membranes, anodes, and cathodes, highlighting their design strategies. This review examines the impact of photocured materials on the battery’s properties, such as its conductivity, lithium-ion transference number, and mechanical strength, while examining how vat-photopolymerization-derived 3D architectures optimize ion transport and electrode–electrolyte integration. Finally, it discusses current challenges and future directions for photocuring-based battery manufacturing, emphasizing the need for specialized energy storage resins and scalable processes to bridge lab-scale innovations with industrial applications. Fast charging accelerates lithium-ion battery operation but increases the risk of lithium (Li) plating—a process that undermines efficiency, longevity, and safety. Here, we introduce a predictive modeling framework that captures the onset and severity of Li plating under practical fast-charging conditions. By integrating an empirically parameterized SOC threshold model with time-dependent kinetic simulations and Arrhenius based thermal analysis, we delineate operating regimes prone to irreversible Li accumulation. The framework distinguishes reversible and irreversible plating fractions, quantifies energy losses, and identifies a critical activation energy (0.25 eV) associated with surface-limited deposition. Visualizations in the form of severity maps and voltage-zone risk classifications enable direct application to battery management systems. This approach bridges electrochemical degradation modeling with real-time charge protocol design, offering a practical tool for safe, high-performance battery operation. Full article
