Landslides are destructive geological hazards, making accurate landslide susceptibility assessment essential for disaster prevention and mitigation. However, existing studies often lack scientific rigor in negative sample construction and have unclear model applicability. This study focuses on Ya’an City, Sichuan Province, China, and proposes an innovative approach to negative sample construction using Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR), which is then integrated with Tabular Network (TabNet), a deep learning architecture tailored to structured tabular data, to assess landslide susceptibility. The performance of TabNet is compared against Random Forest, Light Gradient Boosting Machine, deep neural networks, and Residual Networks. The experimental results indicate that (1) the GWR-based sampling strategy substantially improves model performance across all tested models; (2) TabNet trained using the GWR-based negative samples achieves superior performance over all other evaluated models, with an average AUC of 0.9828, exhibiting both high accuracy and interpretability; and (3) elevation, land cover, and annual Normalized Difference Vegetation Index are identified as dominant predictors through TabNet’s feature importance analysis. The results demonstrate that combining GWR and TabNet substantially enhances landslide susceptibility modeling by improving both accuracy and interpretability, establishing a more scientifically grounded approach to negative sample construction, and providing an interpretable, high-performing modeling framework for geological hazard risk assessment. Salinization of olive orchards constitutes a front-line agronomic challenge for farmers, consumers, and the scientific community as food security, olive logistics, and land use become more unsustainable and problematic. Plantlets of two olive varieties (var. Kalamon and var. Koroneiki) were tested for their performance under soil saline conditions, in which L-methionine, choline-Cl, and L-proline betaine were applied foliarly to alleviate adverse effects. The ‘Kalamon’ variety ameliorated its photosynthetic rates when L-proline betaine and L-methionine were administered at low saline exposure. The stressed varieties achieved higher leaf transpiration rates in the following treatment order: choline-Cl > L-methionine > L-proline betaine. Choline chloride supported stomatal conductance in stressed var. Kalamon olives without this pattern, which was also followed by var. Koroneiki. Supplementation regimes created a mosaic of responses on varietal water use efficiency under stress. The total phenolic content in leaves increased in both varieties after exogenous application only at the highest levels of saline stress. None of the substances applied to olive trees could stand alone as a tool to mitigate salinity stress in order to be recommended as a solid agronomic practice. The residual exploitation of amino acids by the olive orchard microbiome must also be considered as part of an environmentally friendly, integrated strategy to mitigate salinity stress. Full article

The aircraft nose-wheel steering system serves as a critical component for ensuring ground taxiing safety and maneuvering efficiency. However, its dynamic control stability faces significant challenges under complex operational conditions. Existing research predominantly focuses on single-discipline modeling, with insufficient in-depth analysis of the coupling effects between hydraulic system dynamics and mechanical dynamics. Traditional PID controllers exhibit limitations in scenarios involving nonlinear time-varying conditions caused by normal load fluctuations of the landing gear buffer strut during high-speed landing phases, including increased control overshoot and inadequate adaptability to abrupt load variations. These issues severely compromise the stability of high-speed deviation correction and overall aircraft safety. To address these challenges, this study constructs a digital twin model based on real aircraft data and innovatively implements multidisciplinary co-simulation via Simcenter 3D, AMESim 2021.1, and MATLAB R2020a. A fuzzy adaptive PID controller is specifically designed to achieve adaptive adjustment of control parameters. Comparative analysis through co-simulation demonstrates that the proposed mechanical–electrical–hydraulic collaborative control strategy significantly reduces response delay, effectively minimizes control overshoot, and decreases hydraulic pressure-fluctuation amplitude by over 85.2%. This work provides a novel methodology for optimizing steering stability under nonlinear interference scenarios, offering substantial engineering applicability and promotion value. Full article

The present paper reports for the first time the comparison of radar-derived eddy dissipation rate (EDR) and vertical velocity with measurements from six aircraft for an intense squall line crossing Hong Kong. The study objectives are three-fold: (i) to characterise the structural dynamics of the intense squall line; (ii) to identify the dynamical change in EDR and vertical velocity during its eastward propagation across Hong Kong with a view to gaining insight into the intensity change of the squall line and the severity of its impact on aircraft flying near it; (iii) to carry out quantitative comparison of EDR and vertical velocity derived from remote sensing instruments, i.e., weather radars and in situ measurements from aircraft, so that the quality of the former dataset can be evaluated by the latter. During the passage of the squall line and taking reference of the radar reflectivity, vertical circulation and the subsiding flow at the rear, it appeared to be weakening in crossing over Hong Kong, possibly due to land friction by terrain and urban morphology. This is also consistent with the maximum gusts recorded by the dense network of ground-based anemometers in Hong Kong. However, from the EDR and the vertical velocity of the aircraft, the weakening trend was not very apparent, and rather severe turbulence was still recorded by the aircraft flying through the squall line into the region with stratiform precipitation when the latter reached the eastern coast of Hong Kong. In general, the radar-based and the aircraft-based EDRs are consistent with each other. The radar-retrieved maximum vertical velocity may be smaller in magnitude at times, possibly arising from the limited spatial and temporal resolutions of the aircraft data. The results of this paper could be a useful reference for the development of radar-based turbulence products for aviation applications. Full article

National Multi-Scenario Simulation of Low-Carbon Land Use to Achieve the Carbon-Neutrality Target in China

Refining the land use structure can boost land utilization efficiency and curtail regional carbon emissions. Nevertheless, prior research has predominantly concentrated on static linear planning analysis. It has failed to account for how future dynamic alterations in driving factors (such as GDP and population) affect simulation outcomes and how the land use spatial configuration impacts the attainment of the carbon-neutrality goal. In this research, 1 km spatial resolution LULC products were employed to meticulously simulate multiple land use scenarios across China at the national level from 2030 to 2060. This was performed by taking into account the dynamic changes in driving factors. Subsequently, an analysis was carried out on the low-carbon land use spatial structure required to reach the carbon-neutrality target. The findings are as follows: (1) When employing the PLUS (Patch—based Land Use Simulation) model to conduct simulations of various land use scenarios in China by taking into account the dynamic alterations in driving factors, a high degree of precision was attained across diverse scenarios. The sustainable development scenario demonstrated the best performance, with kappa, OA, and FoM values of 0.9101, 93.15%, and 0.3895, respectively. This implies that the simulation approach based on dynamic factors is highly suitable for national-scale applications. (2) The simulation accuracy of the PLUS and GeoSOS-FLUS (Systems for Geographical Modeling and Optimization, Simulation of Future Land Utilization) models was validated for six scenarios by extrapolating the trends of influencing factors. Moreover, a set of scenarios was added to each model as a control group without extrapolation. The present research demonstrated that projecting the trends of factors having an impact notably improved the simulation precision of both the PLUS and GeoSOS-FLUS models. When contrasted with the GeoSOS-FLUS model, the PLUS model attained superior simulation accuracy across all six scenarios. The highest precision indicators were observed in the sustainable development scenario, with kappa, OA, and FoM values reaching 0.9101, 93.15%, and 0.3895, respectively. The precise simulation method of the PLUS model, which considers the dynamic changes in influencing factors, is highly applicable at the national scale. (3) Under the sustainable development scenario, it is anticipated that China’s land use carbon emissions will reach their peak in 2030 and achieve the carbon-neutrality target by 2060. Net carbon emissions are expected to decline by 14.36% compared to the 2020 levels. From the perspective of dynamic changes in influencing factors, the PLUS model was used to accurately simulate China’s future land use. Based on these simulations, multi-scenario predictions of future carbon emissions were made, and the results uncover the spatiotemporal evolution characteristics of China’s carbon emissions. This study aims to offer a solid scientific basis for policy-making related to China’s low-carbon economy and high-quality development. It also intends to present Chinese solutions and key paths for achieving carbon peak and carbon neutrality. Full article

Hydrogels are widely known for their ability to increase soil water retention and for their potential slow nutrient release mechanism. They have been constantly improved to meet the growing demand for sustainability in agriculture. Research focused on the development of biodegradable hydrogels, produced from industrial cellulose waste, are an ecological and efficient alternative soil ameliorant for the improvement of agricultural land. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impacts of two types of hydrogel (processed in a glass reactor versus a twin-screw extruder) on soils with different textures (clay and sandy loam), testing their water retention capacity, nitrogen leaching, and effects on seed germination. The methodology included the evaluation of water retention capacity at different pressures with different hydrogel addition rates in the soil, leaching tests in columns filled with soil and hydrogel layers, and germination tests of sorghum and corn. The results indicated that the addition of hydrogel significantly improved water retention, especially in sandy loam soils. The hydrogels also reduced nitrogen leaching, acting as nitrification inhibitors and limiting the conversion of ammonium to nitrate, with greater effectiveness in clayey soils. In the tested formulations, it was observed that the hydrogel doses applied to the columns favored nitrogen retention in the region close to the roots, directly influencing the initial stages of germination. This behavior highlights the potential of hydrogels as tools for directing nutrients in the soil profile, indicating that adjustments to the C:N ratio, nutrient release rate, and applied doses can optimize their application for different crops. Previous reviews have examined specific facets of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in transportation planning, such as transit-focused applications and open source geospatial tools. However, this study offers the first systematic, PRISMA-guided longitudinal evaluation of GIS integration in transportation planning, spanning thematic domains, data models, methodologies, and outcomes from 2004 to 2024. This study addresses this gap through a longitudinal analysis of GIS-based transportation research from 2004 to 2024, adhering to PRISMA guidelines. By conducting a mixed-methods analysis of 241 peer-reviewed articles, this study delineates major trends, such as increased emphasis on sustainability, equity, stakeholder involvement, and the incorporation of advanced technologies. Prominent domains include land use–transportation coordination, accessibility, artificial intelligence, real-time monitoring, and policy evaluation. Expanded data sources, such as real-time sensor feeds and 3D models, alongside sophisticated modeling techniques, enable evidence-based, multifaceted decision-making. However, challenges like data limitations, ethical concerns, and the need for specialized expertise persist, particularly in developing regions. Future geospatial innovations should prioritize the responsible adoption of emerging technologies, inclusive capacity building, and environmental justice to foster equitable and efficient transportation systems. This review highlights GIS’s evolution from a supplementary tool to a cornerstone of data-driven, sustainable urban mobility planning, offering insights for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to advance transportation strategies that align with equity and sustainability goals. Exogenous Melatonin Application Improves Shade Tolerance and Growth Performance of Soybean Under Maize–Soybean Intercropping Systems

Maize–soybean intercropping is widely practised to improve land use efficiency, but shading from maize often limits soybean growth and productivity. Melatonin, a plant signaling molecule with antioxidant and growth-regulating properties, has shown potential in mitigating various abiotic stresses, including low light. This study investigated the efficacy of applying foliar melatonin (MT) to enhance shade tolerance and yield performance of soybean under intercropping. Four melatonin concentrations (0, 50, 100, and 150 µM) were applied to soybean grown under mono- and intercropping systems. The results showed that intercropping significantly reduced growth, photosynthetic activity, and yield-related traits. However, the MT application, particularly at 100 µM (MT100), effectively mitigated these declines. MT100 improved plant height (by up to 32%), leaf area (8%), internode length (up to 41%), grain yield (32%), and biomass dry matter (30%) compared to untreated intercropped plants. It also enhanced SPAD chlorophyll values, photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, chlorophyll fluorescence parameters such as Photosystem II efficiency (ɸPSII), maximum PSII quantum yield (Fv/Fm), photochemical quenching (qp), electron transport rate (ETR), Rubisco activity, and soluble protein content. These findings suggest that foliar application of melatonin, especially at 100 µM, can improve shade resilience in soybean by enhancing physiological and biochemical performance, offering a practical strategy for optimizing productivity in intercropping systems. Like in many countries, the transfer of increased land value created by public actions without landowner contributions back to the public is under debate in Türkiye. Although various Land Value Capture (LVC) mechanisms are employed worldwide to finance infrastructure investments, no comprehensive system has been established in Türkiye for this purpose. In this study, an improved LVC model that integrates land value and development rights is proposed. This model, termed Hybrid Land Readjustment (hLR), is designed to ensure that land value increases triggered by public investments are returned to the public. To this end, existing Turkish value capture instruments with potential are examined. Under the proposed hLR framework, equal basic development rights are granted to cadastral parcels, parcel and building-block value maps are utilized, basic rights are adjusted according to land-value changes, and a portion of additional development rights is transferred to the public. A practical application scenario is provided to illustrate the model’s operation. The system is configured for seamless integration into Türkiye’s existing legal and planning framework, offering a sustainable mechanism for financing infrastructure and implementing zoning plans. Geographic object-based image analysis (GEOBIA) has demonstrated substantial utility in remote sensing tasks. However, its integration with deep learning remains largely confined to image-level classification. This is primarily due to the irregular shapes and fragmented boundaries of segmented objects, which limit its applicability in semantic segmentation. While convolutional neural networks (CNNs) excel at local feature extraction, they inherently struggle to capture long-range dependencies. In contrast, Transformer-based models are well suited for global context modeling but often lack fine-grained local detail. To overcome these limitations, we propose GOFENet (Geo-Object Feature Enhanced Network)—a hybrid semantic segmentation architecture that effectively fuses object-level priors into deep feature representations. GOFENet employs a dual-encoder design combining CNN and Swin Transformer architectures, enabling multi-scale feature fusion through skip connections to preserve both local and global semantics. An auxiliary branch incorporating cascaded atrous convolutions is introduced to inject information of segmented objects into the learning process. Furthermore, we develop a cross-channel selection module (CSM) for refined channel-wise attention, a feature enhancement module (FEM) to merge global and local representations, and a shallow–deep feature fusion module (SDFM) to integrate pixel- and object-level cues across scales. Experimental results on the GID and LoveDA datasets demonstrate that GOFENet achieves superior segmentation performance, with 66.02% mIoU and 51.92% mIoU, respectively. The model exhibits strong capability in delineating large-scale land cover features, producing sharper object boundaries and reducing classification noise, while preserving the integrity and discriminability of land cover categories. This paper proposes a novel hierarchical control architecture that combines Model Predictive Control (MPC) with Explicit Model-Following Control (EMFC) to enable accurate and efficient trajectory tracking for quadrotor electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft operating in urban environments. The approach addresses the challenges of strong nonlinear dynamics, multi-axis coupling, and stringent safety constraints by separating the planning task from the fast-response control task. The MPC layer generates constrained velocity and yaw rate commands based on a simplified inertial prediction model, effectively reducing computational complexity while accounting for physical and operational limits. The EMFC layer then compensates for dynamic couplings and ensures the rapid execution of commands. A high-fidelity simulation model, incorporating rotor flapping dynamics, differential collective pitch control, and enhanced aerodynamic interference effects, is developed to validate the controller. Four representative ADS-33E-PRF tasks—Hover, Hovering Turn, Pirouette, and Vertical Maneuver—are simulated. Results demonstrate that the proposed controller achieves accurate trajectory tracking, stable flight performance, and full compliance with ADS-33E-PRF criteria, highlighting its potential for autonomous urban air mobility applications. The rising demand for sustainable protein is driving interest in insects as a raw material for advanced food ingredients. This review collates and critically analyses over 300 studies on the conversion of crickets, mealworms, black soldier flies, and other farmed species into powders, protein isolates, oils, and chitosan-rich fibers with targeted techno-functional roles. This survey maps how thermal pre-treatments, blanch–dry–mill routes, enzymatic hydrolysis, and isoelectric solubilization–precipitation preserve or enhance the water- and oil-holding capacity, emulsification, foaming, and gelation, while also mitigating off-flavors, allergenicity, and microbial risks. A meta-analysis shows insect flours can absorb up to 3.2 g of water g−1, stabilize oil-in-water emulsions for 14 days at 4 °C, and form gels with 180 kPa strength, outperforming or matching eggs, soy, or whey in specific applications. Case studies demonstrate a successful incorporation at 5–15% into bakery, meat analogs and dairy alternatives without sensory penalties, and chitin-derived chitosan films extend the bread shelf life by three days. Comparative life-cycle data indicate 45–80% lower greenhouse gas emissions and land use than equivalent animal-derived ingredients. Collectively, the evidence positions insect-based ingredients as versatile, safe, and climate-smart tools to enhance food quality and sustainability, while outlining research gaps in allergen mitigation, consumer acceptance, and regulatory harmonization. Hydrological Responses to Territorial Spatial Change in the Xitiaoxi River Basin: A Simulation Study Using the SWAT Model Driven by China Meteorological Assimilation Driving Datasets

The use of the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model driven by China Meteorological Assimilation Driving Datasets (CMADS) for runoff simulation research is of great significance for regional flood prevention and control. Therefore, from the perspective of production-living-ecological space, this article combined multi-source data such as DEM, soil texture and land use type, in order to construct scenarios of territorial spatial change (TSC) across distinct periods. Based on the CMADS-L40 data and the SWAT model, it simulated the runoff dynamics in the Xitiaoxi River Basin, and analyzed the hydrological response characteristics under different TSCs. The results showed that The SWAT model, driven by CMADS-L40 data, demonstrated robust performance in monthly runoff simulation. The coefficient of determination (R2), Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency coefficient (NSE), and the absolute value of percentage bias (|PBIAS|) during the calibration and validation period all met the accuracy requirements of the model, which validated the applicability of CMADS-L40 data and the SWAT model for runoff simulation at the watershed scale. Changes in territorial spatial patterns are closely correlated with runoff variation. Changes in agricultural production space and forest ecological space show statistically significant negative correlation with runoff change, while industrial production space change exhibits a significant positive correlation with runoff change. The expansion of production space, particularly industrial production space, leads to increased runoff, whereas the enlargement of agricultural production space and forest ecological space can reduce runoff. This article contributes to highlighting the role of land use policy in hydrological regulation, providing a scientific basis for optimizing territorial spatial planning to mitigate flood risks and protect water resources. Mining activities in a quarry significantly interfere with the landscape, weaken its ecological functions, disrupt the continuity of habitats and change its natural character. The aim of this study is to present a robust, transparent, and participatory methodological framework centered on the Reclamation Quality Index, which enables a comprehensive and repeatable assessment of reclamation quality. At a time when the restoration of functional, ecologically stable and long-term sustainable landscapes is increasingly important, there is a need for reliable tools to assess the quality of restoration. This article presents an original methodology for the evaluation of quarry reclamation, which combines scientific precision with practical applicability. The proposed Reclamation Quality Index is built on multidisciplinary foundations and uses the Delphi methodology, through which expert knowledge and weighted preferences enter the evaluation process. A tool designed in this way makes it possible to quantify the quality of land restoration, identify the benefits of individual interventions, support effective planning, and strengthen the strategic management of post-mining transformation. At the same time, the Reclamation Quality Index creates space for the application of the principles of ecological stability and integration of the landscape as a living, dynamic system in the process of restoration. With its structure and philosophy, the methodology represents a prospective approach to the evaluation and planning of the post-extraction landscape. Its application goes beyond academia, as it can serve as a support for environmental policymaking, landscape planning, and assessing the quality of restoration in practice. Full article

Functional Connectivity in Future Land-Use Change Scenarios as a Tool for Assessing Priority Conservation Areas for Key Bird Species: A Case Study from the Chaco Serrano

Planning conservation for multiple species while accounting for habitat availability and connectivity under uncertain land-use changes presents a major challenge. This study proposes a protocol to identify strategic conservation areas by assessing the functional connectivity of key bird species under future land-use scenarios in the Chaco Serrano of Córdoba, Argentina. We modeled three land-use scenarios for 2050: business as usual, sustainability, and intensification. Using the Equivalent Connected Area index, we evaluated functional connectivity for Chlorostilbon lucidus, Polioptila dumicola, Dryocopus schulzii, Milvago chimango, and Saltator aurantiirostris for 1989, 2019, and 2050, incorporating information about habitat specialization and dispersal capacity to reflect differences in ecological responses. All species showed declining connectivity from 1989 to 2019, with further losses expected under future scenarios. Connectivity declines varied by species and were not always proportional to habitat loss, highlighting the complex relationship between land-use change and functional connectivity. Surprisingly, the sustainability scenario led to the greatest losses in connectivity, emphasizing that habitat preservation alone does not ensure connectivity. Using the Integral Connectivity Index, we identified habitat patches critical for maintaining connectivity, particularly those vulnerable under the business as usual scenario. With a spatial prioritization analysis we identified priority conservation areas to support future landscape connectivity. These findings underscore the importance of multispecies, connectivity-based planning and offer a transferable framework applicable to other regions. Full article
