The transition to sustainable agriculture is a critical challenge for the U.S. food system. A sustainable food system must support the production of healthy and nutritious food while ensuring economic sustainability for farmers and ranchers. It should also reduce negative environmental impacts on soil, water, biodiversity, and climate, and promote equitable and inclusive access to land, farming resources, and food. This narrative review synthesizes U.S. social science literature to identify the key factors that support or impede the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices in the U.S. Our analysis reveals seven overarching factors that influence producer decision-making: awareness and knowledge, social factors, psychological factors, technologies and tools, economic factors, implementation capacity, and policies and regulations. The review highlights the critical role of social science in navigating complexity and uncertainty. Key priorities emerging from the literature include developing measurable, outcome-based programs; ensuring credible communication through trusted intermediaries; and designing tailored interventions. The findings demonstrate that initiatives will succeed when they emphasize measurable benefits, address uncertainties, and develop programs that capitalize on identified opportunities while overcoming existing barriers. Amid rising climate concerns, understanding how renewable energy adoption, human capital, fossil fuel efficiency, and globalization collectively shape CO2 emissions is crucial for unlocking pathways to a cleaner, resilient, and globally connected low-carbon future. Using China as a case study, this research investigates the drivers of CO2 emissions, focusing on fossil fuel efficiency, renewable energy adoption, and globalization, utilizing quarterly data from 1984Q1 to 2023Q4. To ensure robust and nuanced insights, the study integrates advanced machine learning techniques alongside Quantile-on-Quantile Kernel Regularized Least Squares (QQ-KRLS) and a Modified Quantile Regression as robustness checks, capturing complex distributional dynamics often overlooked in conventional analyses. To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first empirical study examining such relationships for the case of China. The results reveal that globalization, fossil fuel efficiency, renewable energy, human capital, and financial risk all contribute to increasing CO2 emissions. The study proposes precise policies based on the findings obtained. Full article

Small-scale farms deserve attention and support because they play crucial and important roles. Apart from ensuring provision of food security, they also provide other economic, environmental, and social–cultural benefits. In the United States of America, these farms are agriculturally, culturally, and geographically different. They have varied needs that trigger an array of distinct biophysical, socioeconomic, and institutional challenges. The effects of these challenges are exacerbated by economic uncertainty, technological advancements, climate change, and other environmental concerns. To provide ideal services to the small-scale farm audience, it is necessary to understand these challenges and opportunities that can be leveraged to enhance their productivity and profitability. This article reviews the challenges faced by small-scale farming in the United States of America. It then reviews possible pathways to enhance their productivity and profitability. The review revealed that U.S. small-scale farms face several challenges. They include accessing farmland, credit and capital, lack of knowledge and skills, and technology adoption. Others are difficulties to insure, competition from corporations, and environmental uncertainties associated with climate change. The paper then reviews key pathways to enhance small-scale farmers’ capacities and resilience with a positive impact on their productivity and profitability. They are enhanced cooperative extension services, incentivization, strategic marketing, annexing technology, and government support, among others. Based on the diversity of farms and their needs, responses should be targeted towards individual needs. Since small-scale farm products have an effect on human health and dietary patterns, strategies to increase productivity should be linked to nutrition and health. Full article

In a business environment with rapidly growing digital technologies, knowledge management (KM) capability is an indispensable source for enterprise innovation activities. Nevertheless, there is limited understanding of the specific KM capability that leads to sustainable business model innovation (SBMI). This study therefore aimed to investigate the internal relationship between KM capability and SBMI by leveraging dynamic capability theory. A hierarchical regression analysis (HRA) and a fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) are used to analyze a sample of 115 Chinese innovative enterprises. The results indicate that organizational structure promotes information technology by improving human capital, and that information technology then stimulates collaboration depth by expanding collaboration breadth, thereby driving SBMI. Specifically, human capital, information technology, collaboration breadth, and collaboration depth play significant chain-mediating roles in the relationship between organizational structure and SBMI. This study contributes to the literature on KM and innovation management, extends the use of low-order and high-order dynamic capabilities in DCT, and assists managers in developing SBMI effectively. Research on Capital Endowment, Energy Cognition and Willingness to Pay for Green Energy Consumption of Urban and Rural Residents in China

The willingness to pay (WTP) for green energy consumption not only indicates the public’s green energy consumption practices, but also affects the realization of China’s “dual carbon” goals and global green development. Based on data from the 2018 Chinese General Social Survey (CGSS), this study describes the WTP for green energy consumption of Chinese urban and rural residents in the context of “dual carbon”. Moreover, it provides an in-depth interpretation from the perspectives of capital endowment and energy cognition, guided by social practice theory (SPT). This study found that, firstly, the public’s WTP for green energy consumption needs to be strengthened urgently, and the percentage of the refusal to participate group reaches 41.44%, and shows significant urban–rural differences. Compared with rural residents, the proportion and amount of WTP for urban residents are 7.5% and 4.016 CNY/month higher, respectively. Secondly, capital endowment and energy cognition are important influencing factors. Among them, economic capital (β = 0.647, p < 0.01) and cultural capital (β = 0.358, p < 0.05) play a significant role for urban residents, while rural residents depend on the government support cognition of energy (β = 7.678, p < 0.001). Finally, the urban–rural divergence in WTP for green energy consumption mainly stems from the gap in capital endowment, which contributes 29.08%, significantly higher than the contribution of energy cognition (8.34%). Therefore, efforts should be made to enhance the capital endowment levels of urban and rural residents, implement a targeted energy knowledge dissemination system, build a comprehensive government support system, and break down institutional barriers through urban–rural integration to guard against the disadvantages of rural residents. Direct Air Capture (DAC) is emerging as a critical climate change mitigation strategy, offering a pathway to actively remove atmospheric CO2. This comprehensive review synthesizes advancements in DAC technologies, with a particular emphasis on the pivotal role of nanostructured solid sorbent materials. The work critically evaluates the characteristics, performance, and limitations of key nanomaterial classes, including metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), zeolites, amine-functionalized polymers, porous carbons, and layered double hydroxides (LDHs), alongside solid-supported ionic liquids, highlighting their varied CO2 uptake capacities, regeneration energy requirements, and crucial water sensitivities. Beyond traditional temperature/pressure swing adsorption, the review delves into innovative DAC methodologies such as Moisture Swing Adsorption (MSA), Electro Swing Adsorption (ESA), Passive DAC, and CO2-Binding Organic Liquids (CO2 BOLs), detailing their unique mechanisms and potential for reduced energy footprints. Despite significant progress, the widespread deployment of DAC faces formidable challenges, notably high capital and operational costs (currently USD 300–USD 1000/tCO2), substantial energy demands (1500–2400 kWh/tCO2), water interference, scalability hurdles, and sorbent degradation. Furthermore, this review comprehensively examines the burgeoning global DAC market, its diverse applications, and the critical socio-economic barriers to adoption, particularly in developing countries. A comparative analysis of DAC within the broader carbon removal landscape (e.g., CCS, BECCS, afforestation) is also provided, alongside an address to the essential, often overlooked, environmental considerations for the sustainable production, regeneration, and disposal of spent nanomaterials, including insights from Life Cycle Assessments. The nuanced techno-economic landscape has been thoroughly summarized, highlighting that commercial viability is a multi-faceted challenge involving material performance, synthesis cost, regeneration energy, scalability, and long-term stability. It has been reiterated that no single ‘best’ material exists, but rather a portfolio of technologies will be necessary, with the ultimate success dependent on system-level integration and the availability of low-carbon energy. The review paper contributes to a holistic understanding of cutting-edge DAC technologies, bridging material science innovations with real-world implementation challenges and opportunities, thereby identifying critical knowledge gaps and pathways toward a net-zero carbon future. Rapid visual screening has been used worldwide as the first approach to evaluate the seismic vulnerability of civil structures in a specific area, in order to prioritize buildings based on the need for upgrading or retrofitting. In this work, a novel mobile application tool for the rapid visual screening of reinforced concrete buildings is presented and discussed. The herein suggested “SeismicV” tool performs a pre-seismic visual screening based on the Japanese guidelines for the seismic evaluation of existing RC buildings. A preliminary seismic vulnerability assessment of a complex modern building situated in the capital of Brazil, Brasilia, was carried out using this mobile app. The data were collected from in situ and based on some data from plants and documents. The SeismicV tool consists of an effective, user-friendly, and straightforward mobile application. Since the methodology is based on a performance score that is compared to the seismic demand, this application design allows for the knowledge of intermediate indices at each step of the evaluation, including dominant variables such as structural irregularity, building age, ground index, and usage index. Although the application was conceived and applied to heritage buildings in the early stages, it can be employed for other complex structures. The findings highlight that utilizing SeismicV to assess the seismic vulnerability of complex buildings through the rapid visual screening method offers significant benefits, including faster evaluations, increased accuracy, and improved accessibility for field assessments. This study examines the added value of territorial cooperation within the LEADER approach, a key pillar of the EU’s rural development policy. Both interterritorial and transnational cooperation projects empower Local Action Groups (LAGs) to tackle common challenges through innovative and community-driven strategies. Drawing on over 3000 projects since 1994, LEADER cooperation has proven its ability to deliver tangible results—such as joint publications, pilot projects, and shared digital platforms—alongside intangible benefits like knowledge exchange, improved governance, and stronger social capital. By facilitating experiential learning and inter-organizational collaboration, cooperation enables stakeholders to work across territorial boundaries and build networks that respond to both national and transnational development issues. The interaction among diverse actors often fosters innovative responses to local and regional problems. Using a mixed-methods approach, including case studies of Italian LAGs, this research analyses the dynamics, challenges, and impacts of cooperation, with a focus on learning processes, capacity building, and long-term sustainability. Therefore, this study focuses not only on project outcomes but also on the processes and learning dynamics that generate added value through cooperation. The findings highlight how territorial cooperation promotes inclusivity, fosters cross-border dialogue, and supports the development of context-specific solutions, ultimately enhancing rural resilience and innovation. In conclusion, LEADER cooperation contributes to a more effective, participatory, and sustainable model of rural development, offering valuable insights for the broader EU cohesion policy. Higher education institutions (HEIs) are increasingly called upon to both respond to and drive societal change. To better understand how HEIs can enhance their ability to innovate, an integrative literature review was conducted, examining the concept of innovative capacity. Key resources, such as social capital and leadership, that support innovative capacity were identified, and the ways in which these key resources interact to give rise to innovation outcomes were explored. The findings were synthesized in a conceptual framework that illuminates the pathways through which the capacity for innovation can be built and leveraged by HEIs. This framework serves as both a theoretical foundation for future research and a practical guide for HEI leaders and policymakers seeking to foster innovation. By leveraging these insights, HEIs can better navigate the challenges of a rapidly evolving society and reinforce their role as key drivers of knowledge creation and the complex societal transformations necessary for a sustainable future. Although group network characteristics significantly influence a group’s ability to exchange and absorb knowledge by listening to group members’ opinions, previous research on voice behavior has not yet fully addressed the social and relational factors in work groups that affect group-level voice. Specifically, in line with the “dark side of social capital” argument, this study examined the effects of group network density on group voice. In addition, drawing on the notion of status conflict, we further examined the moderating role of status conflict on the relationship between group network density and group voice. Using data from 55 work groups, we found an inverted U-shaped relationship between group network density and group voice. Moreover, we found that status conflict moderated the inverted-U effect of group density on group voice, such that when status conflict was high, (1) the overall level of group voice was reduced and (2) group voice decreased faster on the downward side of the inverted-U curve. Herein, we discuss the theoretical and practical implications of these results with relation to effective group management. Full article

As sustainability becomes increasingly central to organizational strategy, social economy organizations (SEOs) are rethinking their business models. This study employs stakeholder analysis using the value mapping (VM) tool developed by Short, Rana, Bocken, and Evans for the development of the VOLTO JÁ project. The objective of the VOLTO JÁ project is to operationalize a senior exchange programme between SEOs. The VM approach extends beyond conventional customer value propositions to prioritize sustainability for all stakeholders and identify key drivers of sustainable business model (SBM) innovation. The multi-stakeholder methodology comprises the following elements: (1) sequential focus groups aimed at enhancing sustainable business thinking; (2) semi-structured interviews; and (3) workshop to facilitate qualitative analysis and co-create the VM. The findings are then categorized into four value dimensions: (1) value captured—improved participant well-being, enhanced reputational capital, mitigation of social asymmetries, and affordable service experiences; (2) value lost—underused community assets; (3) value destroyed—institutional and systemic barriers to innovation; and (4) new value opportunities—knowledge sharing, service diversification, and open innovation to foster collaborative networks. The study demonstrates that the application of VM in SEOs supports SBM development by generating strategic insights, enhancing resource efficiency, and fostering the delivery of socially impactful services. Amid growing concern about labour market resilience in an era of digital and green transitions, this study carries out an investigation on how academic innovation and industrial transformation jointly shape sustainable employment outcomes across EU-27 member states. We frame this inquiry within the emerging concept of the “employment trilemma”, which posits inherent tension between competitiveness, innovation, and social inclusiveness in modern economies. Drawing on a dynamic panel dataset (2005–2023) and employing System SMM estimations, we test the hypothesis that the alignment of academic innovation systems and industrial transformation strategies enhances long-term employment sustainability. Our results reveal a nuanced relationship: academic innovation significantly supports employment in countries with high knowledge absorption capacity, whereas industrial transformation contributes positively only when embedded in cohesive, inclusive economic frameworks. Thus, these findings provide valuable insights for international business due to their emphasis on the importance of cross-sectoral collaboration, policy synchronisation, and investment in human capital for firms navigating increasingly volatile labour markets. Likewise, the study offers actionable insights for business leaders, policymakers, and universities striving to balance innovation with equitable labour market outcomes in an integrated European economy. Oil palm cultivation plays a critical role in rural livelihoods in Indonesia, yet previous research has often overlooked systematic institutional differences among smallholders. This study aims to analyze disparities in assets, strategies, and livelihood outcomes among three oil palm smallholder typologies—ex-Perkebunan Inti Rakyat (PIR) transmigrant smallholders who received land through government transmigration programs, independent smallholders who cultivate oil palm without formal partnerships, and plasma smallholders operating under corporate partnership schemes—in Central Mamuju Regency, West Sulawesi. A descriptive quantitative approach based on the sustainable livelihoods framework was employed, using chi-square analysis of data collected from 90 respondents through structured interviews and field observations. The results show that ex-PIR smallholders possess higher physical, financial, and social capital and achieve better income and welfare outcomes compared to independent and plasma smallholders. Independent smallholders exhibit resilience through diversified livelihood strategies, whereas plasma smallholders face asset limitations and structural dependency on partner companies, increasing their economic vulnerability. The study concludes that differentiated policy approaches are necessary to enhance the resilience of each group, including improving capital access, promoting income diversification, and strengthening institutions for plasma smallholders. Future research should expand geographical scope and explore factors such as technology adoption, gender dynamics, and intergenerational knowledge transfer to deepen understanding of sustainable smallholder livelihoods in tropical plantation contexts. Abstract
Having the proper infrastructure is crucial because it fosters prosperous enterprise and a skilled labor force capable of solving environmental issues. Having the proper infrastructure is crucial because it fosters prosperous enterprise and a skilled labor force capable of solving environmental issues. There are worries about the potential negative effects of human capital centered on innovation, despite studies showing benefits. This study examines how contextual factors such as business environment, infrastructure, and human capital, influence South Africa’s entrepreneurial ecosystem. Multiple Regression Technique was used for analysis. Findings showed that each of the three factors has a remarkable impact, with business environment showing the highest positive relationship to the Ecosystem Index. The results highlight the significance of focusing on sustainable activities when developing human capital. To promote a more sustainable entrepreneurship environment, the study suggests that policymakers should implement incentives, allocate finances for infrastructure, and establish educational and knowledge-sharing initiatives to encourage the sustainability of the entrepreneurial ecosystem. Future research directions will focus on investigating how additional contextual factors affect ecosystems in various regions and industries. The study also suggests the evaluation of gender equality in access to financial and business assistance. Full article

The mud crab (Scylla paramamosain), also known as the mangrove crab, thrives in shallow mangrove forests, subtidal zones, and muddy intertidal habitats. It is a highly valuable species in the mangroves and estuaries of tropical regions and is in high demand in Vietnam’s coastal markets. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the key factors influencing consumer behavior and purchasing decisions regarding mud crabs in Vietnam’s three largest cities: Can Tho City, Ho Chi Minh City, and Hanoi Capital. To achieve this, the research employs rigorous analytical methods, including Cronbach’s alpha reliability test, principal component analysis, and multivariate regression analysis, to identify the primary determinants of consumer behavior and purchasing preferences for fresh mud crabs. The multiple regression analysis reveals two key factors that significantly influence consumer choices: nutritional knowledge and convenience awareness. Most of consumers perceive fresh mud crabs as superior in quality, expecting them to offer greater freshness; higher levels of protein, amino acids, and minerals; as well as excellent flesh texture and enhanced palatability. Based on these findings, two strategic directions are proposed for the sustainable development of Vietnam’s crab industry: (1) improving the nutritional quality of crab products to align with consumer expectations for health benefits and (2) enhancing the distribution network and diversifying product offerings to improve accessibility and convenience for consumers.
