To balance the quantity of heat generated and consumed, thermal energy storage systems are crucial for power plants and district heating systems. Particularly when phase transitions and pressure variations are not adequately covered in the existing literature, their work frequently takes place under complicated, changing temperature and fluid dynamic settings. The goal of this research is to create a thermodynamic model that incorporates the effects of steam condensation, steam injection, and heating failures to describe the transient behaviour of temperature and pressure in pressure vessels containing single-phase and two-phase fluids. To account for nonlinear, temperature-dependent steam properties, as well as initial and boundary constraints, the study proposes energy balance models for hot water and saturated steam cases. Numerical simulations evaluating sensitivity to parameter changes are presented alongside analytical solutions for isochoric and isobaric systems. The model also includes direct steam injection heating and the use of a heat exchanger. It explains the changes in temperature and pressure that occur in thermal energy storage systems over time, including significant events such as steam cushion collapse and condensate drainage. According to the sensitivity analysis, the main factors influencing the system’s safety limitations and transient dynamic phenomena are thermal power, heat exchanger capacity, and thermal insulation efficiency. The proposed thermodynamic model closes a major gap in the literature by providing reliable predictions of the transient behavior needed for the safe design and reliable operation of pressure vessels utilized for heat storage in district heating networks. This model can be used by engineers and researchers to optimize system design and steer clear of risky operational situations. Full article

Ionic liquids, which are widely recognized as environmentally friendly solvents, stand out as promising alternatives to traditional heat-transfer fluids due to their outstanding heat-storage and heat-transfer capabilities. In the course of our ongoing research, we successfully synthesized ionic liquids 1-ethyl-4-alkyl-1,2,4-triazolium alanine [Taz(2,n)][Ala], where (n = 4, 5); in this study, we present comprehensive data on their density, surface tension, isobaric molar heat capacity, and thermal conductivity for the first time. The key thermophysical parameters influencing the heat-transfer process, such as thermal expansibility, compressibility, isochoric heat capacity, and heat-storage density, were meticulously calculated from experimental data. Upon comparison with previously reported ionic liquids and commercially utilized heat-transfer fluids, [Taz(2,n)][Ala] demonstrated superior heat-storage and heat-transfer performance, particularly in terms of heat-storage density (~2.63 MJ·m−3·K−1), thermal conductivity (~0.190 W·m−1·K−1), and melting temperature (~226 K). Additionally, the presence of the alanine anion in [Taz(2,n)][Ala] provides more possibilities for its functional application. Full article

A new equation of state for argon was developed with the view of extending the range of validity of the equation of state previously proposed by Tegeler et al. and obtaining a better physical description of the experimental thermodynamic data for the whole fluid region (single-phase, metastable, and saturation states). As proposed by Tegeler et al., this equation is also based on a functional form of the residual part of the reduced Helmholtz free energy. However, in this work, the fundamental equation for Helmholtz free energy was derived from the measured quantities CV(ρ, T) and P(ρ, T). The empirical description of the isochoric heat capacity CV(ρ, T) was based on an original empirical description explicitly containing the metastable states. The thermodynamic properties (internal energy, entropy, and free energy) were then obtained by combining the integration of CV(ρ, T). The arbitrary functions introduced by the integration process were deduced from a comparison between calculated and experimental pressure P(ρ, T) data. The new formulation is valid for the whole fluid region from the melting line to 2300 K and for pressures up to 50 GPa. It also predicts the existence of a maximum of the isochoric heat capacity CV along isochors, as experimentally observed in several other fluids. For many applications, an approximate form of the equation of state for the liquid phase may be sufficient. A Tait–Tammann equation is therefore proposed between the triple-point temperature and 148 K. Full article

The present paper contains data on the density (ρ), sound velocity (u), and specific heat capacity cp of the mixture of N,N-dimethylformamide + 1-butanol (DMF + BuOH) determined in the entire concentration range of solution and in the temperature range (293.15–318.15) K. The analysis of thermodynamic functions such as isobaric molar expansion, isentropic and isothermal molar compression, isobaric and isochoric molar heat capacity, as well as their excess functions (Ep,mE,KS,mE,KT,mE,Cp, mE,CV, mE) and also VmE was undertaken. The analysis of changes in the physicochemical quantities was based on consideration of the system in terms of intermolecular interactions and resulting changes in the mixture structure. The results available in the literature were confusing during the analysis and became the reason for our decision to thoroughly examine the system. What is more, for a system whose components are widely used, there is very scarce information in the literature regarding the heat capacity of the tested mixture, which was also achieved and presented in this publication. The conclusions drawn from so many data points allow us to approximate and understand the changes that occur in the structure of the system due to the repeatability and consistency of the obtained results. Thermodynamics of liquid water in terms of a non-standard approach—the ion–molecular model—is considered. Water is represented as a dense gas of neutral H2O molecules and single charged H3O+ and OH ions. The molecules and ions perform thermal collisional motion and interconvert due to ion exchange. The energy-rich process—vibrations of an ion in a hydration shell of molecular dipoles—well known to spectroscopists with its dielectric response at 180 cm−1 (5 THz), is suggested to be key for water dynamics. Taking into account this ion–molecular oscillator, we compose an equation of state of liquid water to obtain analytical expressions for the isochores and heat capacity. Full article

Nowadays, additive manufacturing (AM) is a powerful way to make complex-shaped components for airspace engineering from nickel-based superalloys. So, while nickel-based superalloys could easily be we L-DED in sheet-metal thicknesses, they suffered from strain-age cracking and solidification during AM or in the post-weld aging treatment. This is attributed to the fact that besides the limitation of γ′- phase forming elements (Al and Ti), as they form by AM very rapidly and reduce ductility, the majority of the superalloys contain carbide-forming elements such as Cr, Mo, and W. The precipitation of carbides, which is very effective in strengthening, develops cracks in the heat-affected zone (HAZ) during AM. The difference in isochoric heat capacities and the thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) at the phase boundary leads to the appearance of dangerous local destruction energy. If the area of the interfacial interface is sufficiently extended, then the accumulation of this energy reaches a level sufficient for a crack formation. We have proposed a crack initiation criterion (CIC) for assessing the dangerous level of fracture energy. The CIC was derived from an estimate of the local energy balance from the heat transfer equation for the two-phase area. Practical approbation of the criterion was carried out after L-DED of samples from Ni50Cr33W4.5Mo2.8TiAlNb (EP648) alloy powder with an increased carbon content based on the study of the chemical composition near the crack formed during solidification. Using the proposed criterion provides an opportunity to give the rank to carbide-forming elements according to the degree of their influence on the fracture energy. Thus, the release of aluminum carbide turned out to be 5.48 times more dangerous than the release of titanium carbide and more than 5 times more dangerous than the release of tungsten carbide and molybdenum. Functional Graded Structures and Functional Graded parts, made using dissimilar materials, are designed to provide specific properties to the final product. One of the most promising methods for manufacturing 3D Functional Graded objects is 3D laser cladding and/or direct energy deposition. However, the construction of graded and especially layered graded structures in the process of joining materials with different thermophysical properties under certain conditions is accompanied by the formation of cracks along the phase boundaries, which are a consequence of residual stresses and/or chemical segregations. The conditions for phase consolidation are macroscopic balancing of residual stresses in the region of the interface. In a broader sense, in the field of the interface, it is necessary to consider the thermodynamic equilibrium of the phases in connection with mechanical equilibrium. In this regard, the article proposed criteria for the thermodynamic affinity of phases in the area of the Functional Graded Structures interface, including the coefficients of thermal expansion and isobaric and isochoric heat capacities of the phases. Examples of cracking and the use of the obtained criteria are provided. Full article

We describe a first-order phase transition of a simple system in a process where the volume is kept constant. We show that, unlike what happens when the pressure is constant, (i) the transformation extends over a finite temperature (and pressure) range, (ii) each and every extensive potential (internal energy U, enthalpy H, Helmholtz energy F, and Gibbs energy G), and the entropy S is continuous across the transition, and (iii) the constant-volume heat capacity does not diverge during the transition and only exhibits discrete jumps. These non-intuitive results highlight the importance of controlling the correct variables in order to distinguish between continuous and discontinuous transitions. We apply our results to describe the transition between ice VI and liquid water using thermodynamic information available in the literature and also to show that a first-order phase transition driven in isochoric condition can be used as the operating principle of a mechanical actuator. This study concerns the key problem of determining the conditions for the consolidation or fracture of bimetallic compounds and high-gradient materials with different coefficients of thermal expansion. The well-known approach to determining the strength is based on the assessment of the critical energy release rates during fracture, depending on the conditions of loading (the portion of shear loading). Unfortunately, most of the experimental results cannot be used directly to select suitable fracture toughness criteria before such a connection is made. This especially applies to the region of interphase interaction, when it is required to estimate the internal energy of destruction accumulated during the preparation of the joint in the adhesion layer within the range of 20–50 μm. Hence, criteria for the adhesive consolidation of bimetallic compound layers were obtained on the basis of the thermodynamics of nonequilibrium processes. The analysis of the quality of the joint using the obtained criteria was carried out on the basis of the calculation of isochoric and isobaric heat capacities and coefficients of thermal expansion of multiphase layers. The applicability of the criteria for the qualitative assessment of the adhesion of layers is demonstrated in the example of bimetallic joints of steel 316L—aluminum alloy AlSi10Mg obtained by the SLM method at various fusion modes. The limited reserves and well-known disadvantages of using fossil energy sources have increased the need for appropriate renewable substitutes in the production of various chemicals and materials. Biomass has been shown to be worthy of attention since it can be converted to biofuels and value-added chemicals relatively easily. The design of biomass valorisation process requires knowledge on the thermodynamic behaviour of the biomass-derived compounds, such as furfural and furfuryl alcohol. The thermodynamic and transport properties of the binary system furfural + furfuryl alcohol were studied at various temperatures and pressures. Density, speed of sound and refractive index were measured in the temperature range T = (288.15–345.15) K and viscosity was measured at temperatures up to 373.15 K, all at atmospheric pressure. Further, the density of pure components was obtained in the temperature range (293.15–413.15) K for furfural and (293.15–373.15) K for furfuryl alcohol at pressures up to 60.0 MPa. The obtained density values were correlated using the modified Tammann–Tait equation with an average absolute deviation lower than 0.009% for furfural and furfuryl alcohol. The optimised parameters were used for the calculation of the isothermal compressibility, the isobaric thermal expansivity, the internal pressure and the isobaric and isochoric specific heat capacities. The reported data are a valuable source of information for the further application of the investigated compounds. Full article

1-Butanol can be considered as a good fuel additive, which can be used at high pressures. Therefore, the knowledge of high-pressure thermophysical properties is crucial for this application. In this paper, new experimental data on the speed of sound in 1-butanol in the temperature range from 293 to 318 K and at pressures up to 101 MPa are reported. The speed of sound at a frequency of 2 MHz was measured at atmospheric and high pressures using two measuring sets operating on the principle of the pulse–echo–overlap method. The measurement uncertainties were estimated to be better than ±0.5 m·s−1 and ± 1 m·s−1 at atmospheric and high pressures, respectively. Additionally, the density was measured under atmospheric pressure in the temperature range from 293 to 318 K using a vibrating tube densimeter Anton Paar DMA 5000. Using the experimental results, the density and isobaric and isochoric heat capacities, isentropic and isothermal compressibilities, isobaric thermal expansion, and internal pressure were calculated at temperatures from 293 to 318 K and at pressures up to 100 MPa. Subcooled water is the primordial matrix for ice embryo formation by homogeneous and heterogeneous nucleation. The knowledge of the specific Gibbs free energy and other thermodynamic quantities of subcooled water is one of the basic prerequisites of the theoretical analysis of ice crystallization in terms of classical nucleation theory. The most advanced equation of state of subcooled water is the IAPWS G12-15 formulation. The determination of the thermodynamic quantities of subcooled water on the basis of this equation of state requires the iterative determination of the fraction of low-density water in the two-state mixture of low-density and high-density subcooled water from a transcendental equation. For applications such as microscopic nucleation simulation models requiring highly frequent calls of the IAPWS G12-15 calculus, a new two-step predictor-corrector method for the approximative determination of the low-density water fraction has been developed. The new solution method allows a sufficiently accurate determination of the specific Gibbs energy and of all other thermodynamic quantities of subcooled water at given pressure and temperature, such as specific volume and mass density, specific entropy, isothermal compressibility, thermal expansion coefficient, specific isobaric and isochoric heat capacities, and speed of sound. The misfit of this new approximate analytical solution against the exact numerical solution was demonstrated to be smaller than or equal to the misprediction of the original IAPWS G12-15 formulation with respect to experimental values. We review the experimental evidence, from both historic and modern literature of thermodynamic properties, for the non-existence of a critical-point singularity on Gibbs density surface, for the existence of a critical density hiatus line between 2-phase coexistence, for a supercritical mesophase with the colloidal characteristics of a one-component 2-state phase, and for the percolation loci that bound the existence of gaseous and liquid states. An absence of any critical-point singularity is supported by an overwhelming body of experimental evidence dating back to the original pressure-volume-temperature (p-V-T) equation-of-state measurements of CO2 by Andrews in 1863, and extending to the present NIST-2019 Thermo-physical Properties data bank of more than 200 fluids. Historic heat capacity measurements in the 1960s that gave rise to the concept of “universality” are revisited. The only experimental evidence cited by the original protagonists of the van der Waals hypothesis, and universality theorists, is a misinterpretation of the isochoric heat capacity Cv. We conclude that the body of extensive scientific experimental evidence has never supported the Andrews–van der Waals theory of continuity of liquid and gas, or the existence of a singular critical point with universal scaling properties. All available thermodynamic experimental data, including modern computer experiments, are compatible with a critical divide at Tc, defined by the intersection of two percolation loci at gaseous and liquid phase bounds, and the existence of a colloid-like supercritical mesophase comprising both gaseous and liquid states. We present new general relationships among the material properties of an isotropic material kept in homogeneous stress conditions with hydrostatic pressure and plane shear. The derivation is not limited to the proximity of the zero shear-stress and -strain condition, which allows us to identify the relationship between adiabatic and isothermal shear compliances (inverse of the moduli of rigidity) along with new links, among others, between isobaric and isochoric shear thermal expansion coefficients and heat capacities at constant stress and constant shear strain. Such relationships are important for a variety of applications, including the determination of constitutive equations, the characterization of nanomaterials, and the identification of properties related to earthquakes precursors and complex media (e.g., soil) behavior. The results may be useful to investigate the behavior of materials during phase transitions involving shear or in non-homogeneous conditions within a local thermodynamic equilibrium framework. One of the most crucial challenges of sustainable development is the use of low-temperature heat sources (60–200 °C), such as thermal solar, geothermal, biomass, or waste heat, for electricity production. Since conventional water-based thermodynamic cycles are not suitable in this temperature range or at least operate with very low efficiency, other working fluids need to be applied. Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) uses organic working fluids, which results in higher thermal efficiency for low-temperature heat sources. Traditionally, new working fluids are found using a trial-and-error procedure through experience among chemically similar materials. This approach, however, carries a high risk of excluding the ideal working fluid. Therefore, a new method and a simple rule of thumb—based on a correlation related to molar isochoric specific heat capacity of saturated vapor states—were developed. With the application of this thumb rule, novel isentropic and dry working fluids can be found applicable for given low-temperature heat sources. Additionally, the importance of molar quantities—usually ignored by energy engineers—was demonstrated. Full article
