Physical Fitness, Experiential Avoidance, and Psychological Inflexibility Among Adolescents: Results from the EHDLA Study

Background/Introduction: Psychological inflexibility, which includes experiential avoidance, is a transdiagnostic process associated with multiple mental health issues in adolescence. Physical fitness (PF) has shown benefits for mental well-being, yet its specific relationship with psychological inflexibility remains understudied, particularly among youth. Objectives: To examine the association between components of PF and psychological inflexibility, measured by the Acceptance and Action Questionnaire-II (AAQ-II), in a representative sample of Spanish adolescents. Methods: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using data from 631 adolescents (aged 12–17) participating in the Eating Healthy and Daily Life Activities (EHDLA) study. PF was assessed by the Assessing the Levels of PHysical Activity and Fitness (ALPHA-Fit) Test Battery (cardiorespiratory fitness, muscular strength, agility, and flexibility). Psychological inflexibility was measured using the AAQ-II. Generalized linear models (GLMs) were used to evaluate associations, adjusting for age, sex, body mass index, socioeconomic status, physical activity, sedentary behavior, sleep duration, and energy intake. Results: Unadjusted analyses showed weak but significant associations between psychological inflexibility and performance in the 20 m shuttle run test (p = 0.002), the 4 × 10 shuttle run test (p = 0.005), and the sit-and-reach test (p < 0.001). However, after adjusting for covariates, none of the PF components maintained a statistically significant association with the AAQ-II scores. Conclusions: In this adolescent sample, PF components were not independently associated with psychological inflexibility after adjustment for key confounders. These findings suggest that, while PF may contribute to general well-being, it is not a primary determinant of psychological inflexibility. Further longitudinal and intervention studies are needed to clarify the mechanisms linking physical and psychological health in youth. Full article

Background and objectives: Adducins are cytoskeletal proteins essential for membrane stability, actin–spectrin network organization, and cell signaling. Mutations in the genes ADD1, ADD2, and ADD3 have been linked to hypertension, neurodevelopmental disorders, and cancer. However, no comprehensive in silico saturation mutagenesis study has systematically evaluated the pathogenic potential and structural consequences of all possible missense mutations in adducins. This study aimed to identify high-risk variants and their potential impact on protein stability and function. Methods: We performed computational saturation mutagenesis for all possible single amino acid substitutions across the adducin proteins family. Pathogenicity predictions were conducted using four independent tools: AlphaMissense, Rhapsody, PolyPhen-2, and PMut. Predictions were validated against UniProt-annotated pathogenic variants. Predictive performance was assessed using Cohen’s Kappa, sensitivity, and precision. Mutations with a prediction probability ≥ 0.8 were further analyzed for structural stability using mCSM, DynaMut2, MutPred2, and Missense3D, with particular focus on functionally relevant domains such as phosphorylation and calmodulin-binding sites. Results: PMut identified the highest number of pathogenic mutations, while PolyPhen-2 yielded more conservative predictions. Several high-risk mutations clustered in known regulatory and binding regions. Substitutions involving glycine were consistently among the most destabilizing due to increased backbone flexibility. Validated variants showed strong agreement across multiple tools, supporting the robustness of the analysis. Conclusions: This study highlights the utility of multi-tool bioinformatic strategies for comprehensive mutation profiling. The results provide a prioritized list of high-impact adducin variants for future experimental validation and offer insights into potential therapeutic targets for disorders involving ADD1, ADD2, and ADD3 mutations. Dual Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) inverters are essential in residential and small commercial solar power systems, optimizing power extraction from two independent solar panel arrays to enhance efficiency and energy harvesting. On the other hand, the Three-Level T-Type Voltage Source Inverter (3L T-Type VSI) is known for its reduced switching losses, improved harmonic distortion, and reduced part count in comparison to other three-level topologies. In this paper, a novel architecture is proposed to integrate the dual MPPT structure directly to each DC-side split capacitor of the 3L T-Type VSI, taking advantage of the intrinsic characteristics of the inverter’s topology. Further performance enhancement is achieved by integrating a classical MPPT strategy to the control framework to make it feasible for a real-case grid integration. The combination of these methods ensures faster and stable tracking under dynamic irradiance conditions. Considering that strategies dedicated to balancing the DC-link capacitor’s voltage slightly affect the AC-side current waveform, an enhanced sliding mode control (SMC) strategy tailored for dual MPPT and 3L T-Type VSI is deployed, combining the simplicity of conventional PI controllers used in the independent MPPT-based DC-DC converters with the superior robustness and dynamic performance of SMC. Real-time results obtained using the OPAL-RT Hardware-in-the-Loop platform validated the performance of the proposed control strategy under realistic test scenarios. The current THD was maintained below 4.8% even under highly distorted grid conditions, and the controller achieved a steady state within approximately 15 ms following perturbations in the DC-link voltage, sudden irradiance variations, and voltage sags and swells. Additionally, the power factor remained unitary, enhancing power transfer from the renewable source to the grid. The proposed system was able to achieve efficient power extraction while maintaining high power quality (PQ) standards for the output, positioning it as a practical and flexible solution for advanced solar PV systems. Flexible-joint manipulators have a lightweight nature, compact structure, and high flexibility, making them widely applicable in industrial manufacturing, biomedical instruments, and aerospace fields. However, the inherent flexibility of single-link flexible-joint manipulators (SLFJMs) poses substantial control challenges. Compared to traditional control algorithms, prescribed performance control (PPC) algorithms provide superior transient response and steady-state performance by defining a prescribed performance function. However, existing PPC algorithms are limited to a specific range of system initial states, which reduces the joint manipulator’s operational workspace and weakens the robustness of the control algorithm. To address this issue, this study proposes a prescribed performance bounded-H fault-tolerant controller for SLFJMs. By designing an improved tangent-type barrier Lyapunov function (BLF), a prescribed performance controller that is independent of the initial state of the SLFJM is developed. An input control function (ICF) is employed to mitigate the impulse response of the control input, ensuring a smooth transition from zero. Furthermore, the improved tangent-type BLF enables the tracking error to rapidly converge to a small neighborhood of zero. Finally, a stabilization control simulation experiment is conducted; the results validate the effectiveness of the proposed prescribed performance bounded-H controller. Full article

Background: Anxiety disorders have been rising globally, particularly among adolescents and women. However, the relationship between diet, psychological traits, and anxiety levels in athletes remains underexplored. Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the nutritional and psychological differences between athletes with varying anxiety levels, hypothesizing that higher anxiety correlates with unhealthier dietary habits, greater body distortion, and less adaptive psychological profiles. Methods: A total of 58 athletes (23 women, 35 men), aged 18 to 45 years (mean age = 30.2 years), participated in this cross-sectional study. Data were collected using validated online questionnaires, including the Big Five Inventory, Spielberger State–Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), Acceptance and Action Questionnaire-II (AAQ-II), UCLA Loneliness Scale, and Eating Disorder Inventory (EDI), as well as surveys assessing nutritional habits and physical activity levels. Statistical analyses were conducted using SPSS (v24.0), with independent t-tests to compare differences between higher and lower anxiety groups (p < 0.05). Results: It has beenindicated that higher anxiety was associated with greater neuroticism, lower psychological flexibility, and higher eating disorder symptomatology, while better sleep quality and psychological profiles correlated with lower anxiety levels. Additionally, athletes who cooked their own meals exhibited higher anxiety, whereas greater water intake and whole grain consumption were linked to lower anxiety. More frequent and intense training, particularly weight training, was also associated with reduced anxiety. Conclusion: This study concludes that anxiety in athletes is influenced by multiple lifestyle factors, including sleep quality, dietary habits, psychological traits, and exercise patterns. These findings emphasize the need for holistic approaches integrating nutrition, psychological interventions, and structured physical training to manage anxiety in athletes. Full article

Background/Objectives: Alexithymia is a condition marked by difficulties in identifying and expressing emotions, rooted in both physiological and behavioral mechanisms. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between parental alexithymia and family functioning in families of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) compared to families of typically developing children (TD). Methods: The study sample included parents of children with ASD (n = 120) and a control group of parents of typically developing children (n = 120). A comprehensive set of self-report instruments was used to evaluate alexithymia levels, parental stress, family experience, resilience, cognitive emotion regulation, social support, and family flexibility and cohesion. Results: The analysis revealed that parental alexithymia in families of children with ASD was directly associated with lower levels of family flexibility and cohesion, independent of increased stress or reduced family resilience. Furthermore, the findings indicate that alexithymia in parents is directly linked to reduced family cohesion in ASD families. Conclusions: These results highlight the significant role of parental alexithymia in shaping family dynamics and underscore the necessity for targeted interventions that emphasize emotional skill-building, adaptive coping mechanisms, and resilience to stressful events. This research enhances the understanding of parental alexithymia’s effect on family functioning in the context of ASD. Full article

This study focuses on the slewing and vibration suppression of flexible single-link manipulators. While extensive research has been conducted on such systems, few studies have experimentally validated their theoretical models. To address this gap, an experimental setup is developed, connecting the flexible link to a zero-backlash worm gear and further attaching it to the rotor shaft of the AC servomotor. The worm gear’s characteristics isolate the link’s vibrations from the rotor’s angular motion, enabling independent design of the vibration controller and slewing control. This approach facilitates simultaneous accurate trajectory tracking and vibration suppression. An active vibration control algorithm is implemented based on an accurate dynamic model. This research encompasses dynamic modeling, slewing control, and vibration control for the system. Theoretical predictions are compared with experimental results to validate both the theoretical model and the proposed vibration control algorithm. Full article

The ethanol–water layered syntheses and crystal structures of the coordination polymers [Cd(C17H22N2)2(H2O)2]·2(ClO4)·C17H22N2·C2H5OH 2 and [Cd(C17H22N2)2(NO3)2] 3 are reported, where C17H22N2 is a flexible spacer, 1,7-bis(4-pyridyl)heptane. In compound 2, trans-CdO2N4 octahedral nodes are linked by pairs of bridging ligands to result in [001] looped polymeric chains. The chains stack in the [100] direction to form (010) pseudo layers. Sandwiched between them are secondary sheets of free ligands, perchlorate ions and ethanol solvent molecules. Hydrogen bonds between these species help to consolidate the structure. Compound 3 contains trans-CdO2N4 octahedral nodes as parts of regular 44 nets, which propagate in the (103) plane. Three independent nets are interpenetrated. Full article

The stellar initial mass function (IMF) represents a fundamental quantity in astrophysics and cosmology describing the mass distribution of stars from low mass all the way up to massive and very massive stars. It is intimately linked to a wide variety of topics, including stellar and binary evolution, galaxy evolution, chemical enrichment, and cosmological reionization. Nonetheless, the IMF still remains highly uncertain. In this work, we aim to determine the IMF with a novel approach based on the observed rates of transients of stellar origin. We parametrize the IMF with a simple but flexible Larson shape, and insert it into a parametric model for the cosmic UV luminosity density, local stellar mass density, type Ia supernova (SN Ia), core-collapse supernova (CCSN), and long gamma-ray burst (LGRB) rates as a function of redshift. We constrain our free parameters by matching the model predictions to a set of empirical determinations for the corresponding quantities via a Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo method. Remarkably, we are able to provide an independent IMF determination with a characteristic mass mc=0.100.08+0.24M and high-mass slope ξ=2.530.27+0.24 that are in accordance with the widely used IMF parameterizations (e.g., Salpeter, Kroupa, Chabrier). Moreover, the adoption of an up-to-date recipe for the cosmic metallicity evolution allows us to constrain the maximum metallicity of LGRB progenitors to Zmax=0.120.05+0.29Z. We also find which progenitor fraction actually leads to SN Ia or LGRB emission (e.g., due to binary interaction or jet-launching conditions), put constraints on the CCSN and LGRB progenitor mass ranges, and test the IMF universality. These results show the potential of this kind of approach for studying the IMF, its putative evolution with the galactic environment and cosmic history, and the properties of SN Ia, CCSN, and LGRB progenitors, especially considering the wealth of data incoming in the future. This study investigates the asymmetric impacts of Bitcoin prices on Bitcoin energy consumption. Two series are shown to be chaotic and non-linear using the BDS Independence test. To take into consideration this nonlinearity, we employed the QNARDL model as a traditional technique and Support Vector Machine (SVM) and eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) as non-conventional approaches to study the link between Bitcoin energy usage and Bitcoin prices. Referring to QNARDL estimates, results show that the relationship between Bitcoin energy use and prices is asymmetric. Additionally, results demonstrate that changes in Bitcoin prices have a considerable effect, both short- and long-run, on energy consumption. As a result, any upsurge in the price of Bitcoin leads to an immediate boost in energy use. Furthermore, the short-term drop in Bitcoin values causes an increase in energy use. However, higher Bitcoin prices reduce energy use in the long run. Otherwise, every decline in Bitcoin prices leads to a long-term reduction in energy use. In addition, the performance metrics and convergence of the cost function provide evidence that the XGBoost model dominates the SVM model in terms of Bitcoin energy consumption forecasting. In addition, we analyze the effectiveness of several modeling approaches and discover that the XGBoost model (MSE: 0.52%; RMSE: 0.72 and R2: 96%) outperforms SVM (MSE: 4.89; RMSE: 2.21 and R2: 75%) in predicting. Results indicate that the forecast of Bitcoin energy consumption is more influenced by positive shocks to Bitcoin prices than negative shocks. This study gives insights into the policies that should be implemented, such as increasing the sustainable capacity, efficiency, and flexibility of mining operations, which would allow for the reduction of the negative impacts of Bitcoin price shocks on energy consumption. Background: Generalized joint hypermobility (GJH) is prevalent among young adults, necessitating effective monitoring of musculoskeletal health, particularly among college-aged females. This study aimed to identify physical fitness and health-related quality of life (HR-QoL) characteristics associated with GJH. Methods: A total of 67 participants were assessed: 26 with GJH (mean age 20.06, SD 1.2 years), and 41 without (mean age 20.15, SD 2.2 years). Assessments included hypermobility, anthropometric data, foot posture, balance, flexibility, strength, and HR-QoL. We used the Mann–Whitney test for two independent samples, categorical variables were analyzed with Cramer’s V test. The results indicated that participants with GJH exhibited inferior balance and back muscle static strength endurance but greater flexibility compared to those without GJH. Significant differences were observed in foot posture. However, handgrip strength, explosive strength, and abdominal muscle static strength endurance did not differ significantly between groups. No significant differences were observed in HR-QoL components between the two groups. In conclusion, there appears to be a link between GJH and increased flexibility, impaired balance, reduced back muscle static strength endurance, and altered posture of both feet. Full article

A hybrid satellite–terrestrial relay network is a simple and flexible solution that can be used to improve the performance of land mobile satellite systems, where the communication links between satellite and mobile terrestrial users can be unstable due to the multipath effect, obstacles, as well as the additional atmospheric losses. Motivated by these facts, in this paper, we analyze a system where the satellite–terrestrial links undergo shadowed Rice fading, and, following this, terrestrial relay applies the selection relaying protocol and forwards the information to the final destination using the communication link subjected to Nakagami-m fading. For the considered relaying protocol, we derive the exact closed-form expressions for the outage probability, outage capacity, and ergodic capacity, presented in polynomial–exponential form for the integer-valued fading parameters. The presented numerical results illustrate the usefulness of the selection relaying for various propagation scenarios and system geometry parameters. The obtained analytical results are corroborated by an independent simulation method, based on the originally developed fading simulator. Full article

This article intends to examine debt as a basilar political–theological device acting in favor of the neoliberal ethos. The Papal Encyclical Laudato Si affirms in paragraph 52 that debt today serves the control over the poor peoples in the world. In this article we demonstrate how debt can be seen as a political–theological device that works as an instrument of this specific ethos, aligned with neoliberal principles. We intend to show how these elements are related using three analytical movements. In the first, we present how we understand political theology as a critical reflection about the forms of political power. We observe that power, in its form and in the way it operates, replicates the theological–political power status prior to modernity, operating an excluding inclusion machinery. In the second movement, we analyze the political theology machinery that impacts individuals in the operation of an “excluding inclusion”. Under the political–theological machinery, individuals, groups, or populations are considered as a part of the machinery; they are included because they are incorporated in the new organism as they are excluded from their original content—language, ethos, culture, and their constitution as subjects. Then, in the third, we present the notion of the device, explicitly, a device constituted by a web of odd components and flexible relations that, when isolated as independent elements, act in the subject’s formation. In these terms, debt as a device of the political–theological machinery works to form individuals; it is a device that operates the excluding inclusion to make subjects more and more adapted to the market rules and habits. The very sense of debt in the post-productive era is challenged. We present how the possible exits from this machinery involve not only the debate on the forgiveness of foreign debts, but also how they are intrinsically linked to the creation of a new ethos, new ways of life created by relations outside the orbit of debt control. The conclusion intends to show how necessary it is to restore to people new forms of control over a way of life that is not regulated and ruled by debt. The methodology employed analyzes arguments that originated from works and articles concerning this theme. Full article

Satellite networks show the development trend in global coverage, flexible access, and reliable transmission. They are the key to building a wide coverage, massive connection, three-dimensional, all-round, all-weather, space-, air- and ground-integrated information network. Due to its high frequency and large bandwidth, the laser inter-satellite link (ISL) is easily interfered with by sunlight. When sun outage occurs, the laser inter-satellite link will be interrupted for a long time. Most of the existing satellite link failure-routing algorithms are distributed and have poor load balancing capabilities. The centralized algorithm calculates paths independently for different services, and the effect is not ideal. In this paper, a local pre-rerouting algorithm (LPRA) is proposed. The center node collects the link information from the limited area before sun outage and the service information in the link that is about to be interrupted, and reroutes these services before sun outage occurs. After the occurrence of sun outage, services that originally needed to go through the failed link are forwarded according to the path calculated in advance, thereby avoiding link congestion and reducing the packet loss rate. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm performs better than existing algorithms in terms of packet loss ratio, total delay and load balancing capabilities. Full article

This article explores the barriers and the strategies of a group of highly educated foreign women to obtain a job-education matching situation in the Basque Country (Spain) where they all permanently settled following a binational heterosexual marriage. Drawing on 21 biographical interviews with women from Latin America and Europe, we examine new perspectives on the complexity and fluidity between their professional pathways and family projects. For that, we apply an intersectional lens to analyse their life experience. Our results show that respondents involved in a feminised labour market (education and health) have fewer difficulties to find a job-education match. In other cases, becoming self-employed is a way to gain independence and flexibility by running an open market-oriented business. Interviewees identified language, lack of personal networks, family reconciliation, traditional gender roles and the transferring of cultural capital as the main barriers for their incorporation into the labour market. The study finds that marriage support is not enough to overcome the barriers. We argue that for a more comprehensive understanding of labour integration of highly educated migrant women, motivation and agency, linked to family support, should be considered factors to cope with structural inequalities.
