This study examines how U.S. immigration policies enact legal violence and multigenerational punishment through the spousal reunification process, particularly in mixed-status, transnational families. Building on the concept of “deportability,” we introduce “importability” to describe a beneficiary’s potential to secure permanent residency, which varies according to social markers such as race, gender, and region of origin. Drawing from a content analysis of threads on the Immigration Pathways (IP) web forum, we analyze discussions among U.S. citizen petitioners navigating marriage-based green card applications, with a focus on experiences involving administrative processing (AP) (i.e., marriage fraud investigations). Our findings show that couples who do not align with the state’s conception of “proper” family—particularly U.S. citizen women petitioning for Black African partners—face intensified scrutiny, long delays, and burdensome requirements, including DNA tests and surveillance. These bureaucratic obstacles produce prolonged family separation, financial strain, and diminished sense of belonging, especially for children in single-parent households. Through the lens of “importability,” we reveal how legal violence and multigenerational punishment of immigration policies on mixed-status families beyond deportation threats, functioning as a gatekeeping mechanism that disproportionately affects marginalized families. This research highlights the understudied consequences of immigration policies on citizen petitioners and contributes to a broader understanding of inequality in U.S. immigration enforcement. This article focuses on how rising nativism, manifested through immigrants’ experiences of everyday discrimination, and Florida’s legal context (ascertained through immigrants’ fears of deportation), are related to immigrants’ hesitation when seeking healthcare services. Hesitation to seek healthcare, or healthcare hesitancy, is examined in the context of Florida’s SB1718, a law passed in 2023 that criminalized many aspects of being an immigrant. Based on a survey of 466 Florida immigrants and U.S. citizen adult children of immigrants, logistic regression analysis reveals that everyday experiences with discrimination are associated with a reluctance to seek healthcare services among this population. In particular, those with insecure legal immigrant status (i.e., undocumented and temporary statuses), those with financial hardship, and women demonstrate reluctance to engage with healthcare systems when controlling for other sociodemographic factors. Findings from this study exemplify how immigration policies that restrict access to healthcare and social services not only create logistical barriers to seeking care but also foster a climate of fear and exclusion that deters even those with legal status from seeking medical attention. Background/Objectives: Oral health (OH) in early childhood is a key determinant of long-term well-being, shaped by parenting-related dietary and hygiene habits. While these influences are well-documented, they remain underexplored among Brazilian immigrant families in the United States (U.S.). Therefore, this study was designed to examine how Brazilian immigrant parents’ perceptions and practices regarding diet and oral hygiene affect their preschool-aged children’s OH. Methods: This qualitative study consisted of in-depth interviews with Brazilian immigrant parents of preschool-aged children (ages 2–5) living in the U.S. Individual, in-depth interviews were conducted via Zoom, recorded, and transcribed in Brazilian Portuguese. Two native Brazilian researchers experienced in qualitative methods conducted a thematic analysis of the transcripts in Brazilian Portuguese using MAXQDA, a qualitative data analysis software. The analysis focused on identifying key perceptions, parenting practices, and barriers related to children’s diet and OH. Results: Parents strongly associated sugary foods with poor OH, identifying sugar as a major contributor to dental issues. Both mothers and fathers reported limiting sugar intake and encouraging good oral hygiene practices. While parents prioritized educating their children on healthy habits, barriers such as time constraints, reliance on external childcare, and economic limitations affected the consistent implementation of strategies. Conclusions: Brazilian immigrant parents understand the importance of diet and oral hygiene in in supporting their children’s early OH but face barriers in broader social contexts, such as daycare, preschools, and communities. Interventions should aim to support parents in their caregiving roles while simultaneously addressing systemic and environmental obstacles. Public health efforts should account for cultural, economic, and contextual factors to more effectively support Brazilian immigrant families in promoting their children’s OH. Full article

The presence of culturally and linguistically diverse children increases in early education classrooms worldwide. In monolingual education settings, multilingual children are at a disadvantage regarding their learning opportunities compared to monolingual children. Knowledge about how monolingual educators support children in a multilingual classroom has not been systematized yet. The present scoping review aims to synthesize the existing empirical evidence on (a) characteristics of the learning environment of monolingual teachers with multilingual children and (b) how teacher characteristics relate to the learning environment characteristics in early education institutions worldwide. The inclusion criteria used in this review included articles that report empirical evidence from 1990 to 2024, with multilingual children aged 0–6 of minoritized languages and monolingual teacher practices within a naturalist environment. Subsequently, through the PRISMA-ScR method on the articles found in the WOS and SCIELO databases, 40 articles were included with qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods designs. The results showed that in the Latin American context, culturally responsive practices are scarce for bilingual children with immigrant backgrounds. In the USA and European contexts, educators are more likely to implement activities that include children’s L1, even if they have limited knowledge of that language. The international perspective of this review allows us to identify contributions and challenges in different geographic regions. Full article

Social Ecological Influences on HPV Vaccination Among Cape Verdean Immigrants in the U. S.: A Qualitative Study

Background: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States (U.S.) and a major contributor to several cancers, including cervical, anal, penile, and oropharyngeal cancers. Although a safe and effective vaccine is available, HPV vaccination rates remain suboptimal, particularly among racial, ethnic, and immigrant minority groups. This study explored multiple factors, such as cultural, social, and structural influences, influencing HPV vaccine decision-making among Cape Verdean immigrant parents in the U.S., a population currently underrepresented in HPV research. Methods: Qualitative study using individual, in-depth interviews with Cape Verdean immigrant parents of children aged 11 to 17 years living in the U.S. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and analyzed thematically using the social ecological model (SEM) to identify barriers and facilitators at the intrapersonal, interpersonal, organizational, community, and policy levels. Results: Forty-five Cape Verdean parents (27 mothers, 18 fathers) participated. Fathers were significantly older than mothers (50.0 vs. 41.1 years, p = 0.05). Most were married or partnered (60%), had at least a high school education (84.4%), and reported annual household incomes of US$50,000 or more (66.7%), with no significant gender differences. Nearly all spoke Creole at home (95.6%). Fathers had lower acculturation than mothers (p = 0.05), reflecting less adaptation to U.S. norms and language use. Most parents had limited knowledge of HPV and the vaccine, with gendered beliefs and misconceptions about risk. Only seven mothers (25.9%) reported receiving a provider recommendation; all indicated that their children had initiated vaccination (1 dose or more). Mothers were the primary decision-makers, though joint decision-making was common. Trust in providers was high, but poor communication and the lack of culturally and linguistically appropriate materials limited informed decision-making. Stigma, misinformation, and cultural taboos restricted open dialogue. Trusted sources of information included schools, churches, and Cape Verdean organizations. While parents valued the U.S. healthcare system, they noted gaps in public health messaging and provider engagement. Conclusions: Findings revealed that HPV vaccine uptake and hesitancy among Cape Verdean immigrant parents in the U.S. were influenced by individual beliefs, family dynamics, healthcare provider interactions, cultural norms, and structural barriers. These findings highlight the need for multilevel strategies such as culturally tailored education, community engagement, and improved provider communication to support informed vaccination decisions in this population. Drawing on data from a three-year longitudinal study of 56 Chinese–Canadian families with early elementary school-aged children, this study explores Chinese immigrant parents’ lived-through emotional experiences of heritage language maintenance (HLM). Informed by Vygotsky’s concept of perezhivanie, thematic analysis of annual interview data reveals the mixed and refracted nature of parental emotions involved in Chinese language preservation and bilingual child-rearing. These emotional experiences were profoundly shaped by the intersection of environmental, personal, and situational factors and were deeply entangled with parents’ perceptions of and attitudes toward their children’s heritage language learning and use at home. The emotional work involved significantly influenced the parents’ language and literacy planning and HLM practices. By foregrounding the emotional dimensions of heritage language education, this study offers important implications for educational stakeholders seeking to support immigrant parents both emotionally and practically in raising bilingual children in the host country. Background/Objectives: Although several studies have examined the importance of social capital to individual health, the relationship between social capital and family well-being remains unclear. This study examines the relationships among social capital, parental depressive symptoms, and family well-being, and evaluates whether parental depressive symptoms mediate the association between social capital and family well-being in immigrant Chinese and native Japanese families. Methods: A cross-sectional study using Google questionnaires was conducted between January and April 2024 among parents of local Japanese and immigrant Chinese families with children. The survey assessed demographics and social capital using the PSCS-16 and K6 Scale, family well-being using the General Functioning Index of the Family Assessment Device, and family life satisfaction using the New Brief Job Stress Questionnaire. Multiple-group structural equation modeling clarified the association between bonding and bridging social capital and family well-being. Results: The survey data was collected from 133 parents (75 Japanese and 58 Chinese) of preschool children aged six years and under. About 81.2% of respondents were mothers and 18.8% were fathers, with the majority aged between 30 to 39 years (63.9%). Bonding social capital was positively associated with family well-being among Japanese families. In Chinese families, bonding social capital was indirectly associated with family well-being by reducing parental depressive symptoms. Conclusions: These findings highlight the importance of enhancing bonding social capital to benefit both native and immigrant families. Besides, policymakers should consider tailored strategies that reflect the differing needs of both groups. Full article

Background/Objectives: Despite high breastfeeding initiation rates nationwide, disparities in breastfeeding continuation among Black mothers remain a public health issue. The BreastFeed Iowa Black Immigrant Project aimed to improve breastfeeding rates among low-income Black immigrant mother-infant dyads in Johnson County, Iowa by exploring factors influencing breastfeeding retention and developing a framework for culturally sensitive breastfeeding interventions. Methods: Using a descriptive cross-sectional study design, we employed a convergent, parallel mixed-methods approach to explore factors that influence breastfeeding duration among Black immigrant mothers with children 0–2 years old. Nine focus group discussions (FGDs) were conducted on Zoom among 40 participants with a semi-structured guide on breastfeeding beliefs, experiences, and feeding practices. Additionally, a 22-item survey was administered to 33 participants. Results: Based on the survey, one out of five participants indicated that they were unable to breastfeed for as long as they had planned. The top five reasons why mothers stopped breastfeeding included having received formula from the Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children; being sick and having to take medicine; the baby was hungry too often; the baby was sick and could not breastfeed; and not producing enough milk. The top five themes that emerged from FGDs as barriers to breastfeeding included lack of lactation support, knowledge gaps on breastfeeding benefits, perception of inadequate milk supply, lack of comfort with breast milk expression, and work-related barriers. Conclusions: The community needs assessment identified the elements needed to develop a culturally sensitive framework with targeted interventions to address breastfeeding barriers in the Black immigrant community. Background/Objectives: Overweight and obesity (OW/OB) in immigrant children is a complex multifactorial issue. This work aims to present the OW/OB profile and lifestyle habits of immigrant children and compare them with their native counterparts. Methods: A cross-sectional study (ASOMAD) was conducted in a representative sample of children aged 8–12 years in Madrid from 2020 to 2023. Parental origin, physical activity (PA), screen time, adherence to Mediterranean Diet, sleep, and body composition were assessed by validated methods. OW/OB was determined according to IOTF guidelines. T-tests, chi-square tests, and two-way ANOVA tests were applied based on the variables’ characteristics. Results: A total of 587 children (54% boys, aged 9.54 ± 1.19 y), 33.2% immigrants, were studied. OW/OB rate was higher in immigrants (39.7% boys and 37.4% girls) than in natives (18.0% boys and 17.7% girls) (p < 0.05). Immigrant boys were 30.64 ± 8.39 min/day less active than natives (p < 0.001). Both male and female immigrant children devoted considerably more weekday hours to screen time than natives (2.76 ± 2.75; 2.02 ± 2.47 vs. 2.09 ± 2.29; 1.32 ± 1.38; p < 0.05, respectively). Immigrant children consumed significantly less fish and olive oil and more pasta or rice almost every day (5 or more/week), ate at fast-food restaurants, consumed fewer dairy products and baked goods or pastries for breakfast (p < 0.05), and exhibited worse diet quality compared to Spanish ones. Conclusions: Immigrant children exhibited a higher prevalence of OW/OB, higher screen time, lower PA time, and ate less fish and olive oil and more pasta than natives. Additional research is required to explore the causes of these issues and enhance the lifestyle within this group. Full article

Adrenal cortex carcinoma (ACC) in children is a rare tumor that is probably of multifactorial origin and is mainly associated with genetic and environmental alterations. In the south and part of the southeast of Brazil, as well as in the Paraguayan region bordering the Brazilian State of Paraná, ACC prevalence is higher than in any other country, which is associated with the high prevalence of the TP53 p.R337H variant in Paraná (0.30%), Santa Catarina (0.249%), cities around Campinas-SP (0.21%), and the Paraguayan cities on the border with Paraná (0.05%). Recent research suggests that the co-segregation of XAF1-E134* and TP53-R337H mutations leads to a more aggressive cancer phenotype than TP53-R337H alone. Breast cancer may be mildly influenced by co-segregation with XAF1 p.E134*, and this variant can also confer risk for sarcoma. Objectives: The objectives of this study were to (1) estimate the prevalence of the germline TP53 p.R337H and XAF1 p.E134* variants in Paraguay (excluding cities on the border with Paraná State, Brazil) and (2) estimate whether the ethnic origin of TP53 p.R337H carriers in Paraguay is similar to that of ethnic groups in Paraná (possible Portuguese/Spanish origin). Materials and methods: DNA tests for the identification of TP53 p.R337H were carried out from 2016 to 2019 at the Bio-Materials Laboratory of Facultad Politecnica, UNA, and at the Research Center in Biotechnology and Informatics (CEBIOTEC), Asunción, Paraguay. Polymerase chain reaction followed by restriction enzyme digestion (PCR-RFLP) was used to identify TP53 p.R337H, and real-time PCR (RT-PCR) was employed for XAF1 p.E134*. Peripheral blood samples from 40,000 Paraguayan newborns (NBs) were used for the TP53 p.R337H tests. The XAF1 p.E134* tests (RT-PCR) were performed on samples from 2000 Paraguayan newborns at the Pelé Pequeno Principe Research Institute, Curitiba, PR, Brazil. Results: The TP53 p.R337H variant was not found in any of the 14 Paraguayan departments investigated. A total of 12 of the 2000 Paraguayan NBs were positive for one XAF1 p.E134* allele. Conclusions: The hypothesis of Spanish immigrants carrying p.R337H to Paraguay was disproved. TP53 p.R337H neonatal testing in Paraguay is not recommended, except when there are families with Brazilian ancestry presenting cancer cases. Additional epidemiological studies are required to determine the likelihood of the identified prevalence of the XAF1 p.E134* allele (1/153) in NBs from Paraguay without TP53 p.R337H to present cancer risk. This study complements the first national initiative for the DNA screening of newborns aimed at mapping the TP53 p.R337H and XAF1 p.E134* variants in Paraguay (based on the regions of residence of the newborns). One in four students in the United States is part of an immigrant family. The purpose of this study is to enhance our understanding of the barriers that immigrant students experience in US public schools by critically analyzing how newspapers portray barriers to success, as the goals and processes used in media differ from those of peer-reviewed research. The authors used a document analysis, a qualitative research methodology, and reviewed 67 newspaper articles on immigrant children struggling in US schools. The results show that immigrant students struggle with language barriers, discrimination, mental health, financial stress associated with higher education in the US, lack of preparedness and resources to provide education, lack of familiarity with policy, lack of cultural knowledge about the US, lack of parent involvement, and work and familial obligations. Results also indicate that newspapers published more articles about immigrant struggles during certain time periods, such as Spring 2015 through Winter 2016 and again Summer 2020 through Spring 2021. The paper provides implications for (1) research, suggesting a need for more qualitative primary data collection, (2) practice, including enhanced training, improved mental health referrals and collaborations, and (3) policy, which could include welcoming policies at the school level and advocacy efforts for immigrant student rights under the incoming presidential administration. Intervention Strategies to Overcome HPV Vaccine Hesitancy Among Hispanic Immigrants in the USA: A Video-Based Approach

Background/Objectives: Hispanic immigrants (HIs) in the U.S.A. are disproportionately affected by cervical cancer compared to other groups, at least partly due to low HPV vaccination rates. The aim of this study was to investigate strategies to improve HPV vaccine attitudes and intent of HIs in the U.S.A. by developing and testing the effectiveness of video-based interventions. Methods: This study employed a two-phase mixed-methods approach. In the first phase, focus groups with new and established HIs explored perspectives, concerns about HPV vaccination, types of information to include in a video intervention, and how an effective intervention should be designed. Findings from the focus groups guided the creation of seven short educational videos, including a summary video and a testimonial-based video, addressing key questions about HPV and its vaccine. The second phase, which involved a nationwide survey of 1500 Spanish-speaking HIs, revealed a significant change in overall HPV vaccine attitude generally, and a significant increase in both HPV vaccine intent and attitudes among parents of unvaccinated children. Results: Regression analysis revealed general vaccine attitudes (β = 0.620, p < 0.001), English proficiency (β = 0.066, p = 0.01), and gender (β = −0.072, p = 0.002), as significant predictors of attitudinal changes. Notably, females exhibited less favorable post-intervention attitudes compared to males. Additionally, perceived care from video creators was a strong predictor of normalized gains in vaccine attitudes (β = 0.270, p < 0.001). Video content effectiveness varied; the video addressing vaccine side effects demonstrated the highest impact on attitude improvement. Testimonials and the summary video were also effective in fostering positive changes in attitudes. Despite differences in trust levels between new and established immigrants, both groups valued culturally tailored, Spanish-language information from credible sources. Conclusion: Addressing language and cultural barriers can improve trust in healthcare interventions among Hispanic immigrants in the U.S.A. Public health initiatives should consider these factors to more effectively reduce HPV vaccine hesitancy in this population. Full article

Background: Maternal and child health (MCH) is a critical public health issue affecting individuals, families, and communities worldwide. Immigrant populations, including Brazilian mothers and children in the United States (U.S.), face unique challenges, such as language barriers, limited healthcare access, and socioeconomic disparities that exacerbate health risks. Despite their growing numbers, Brazilian immigrants in the U.S. are an understudied group in MCH research. Objective: This systematic review and qualitative meta-synthesis aims to identify, appraise, and synthesize qualitative and mixed-methods research focused on the MCH experiences of Brazilian immigrants in the U.S. Methods: This review will follow the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Protocols (PRISMA-P) guidelines and is registered with PROSPERO, an international prospective registry of systematic reviews. Qualitative and mixed-methods research published between 2004 and 2024 that explicitly report qualitative methodology, analysis, and findings related to MCH experiences among Brazilians in the U.S. will be eligible to be included. Studies will be identified through a comprehensive search of seven databases (CINAHL, MEDLINE, PubMed, PsycINFO, Web of Science, Scopus, SocINDEX), and selected according to predefined inclusion/exclusion criteria. Only studies available in English, Portuguese, or Spanish and reporting original qualitative data will be included. Data extraction will be conducted using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Data Extraction Tool for Qualitative Research. Findings will be synthesized using the JBI meta-aggregation approach in MAXQDA software and evaluated for confidence using the JBI Confidence in Qualitative Research (ConQual) tool. Conclusions: By synthesizing qualitative findings, this review aims to inform the development of culturally responsive healthcare policies, community-based interventions, and future research tailored to the unique needs and experiences of Brazilian immigrant mothers and children in the U.S. Full article

Why Do Back Vowels Shift in Heritage Korean?

For heritage speakers (HSs), expectations of influence from the community’s dominant language are pervasive. An alternative account for heritage language variability is that HSs are demonstrating sociolinguistic competence: HSs may either initiate or carry forward a pattern of variation from the homeland variety. We illustrate the importance of this consideration, querying whether /u/-fronting in Heritage Korean is best interpreted as influence from Toronto English, where /u/-fronting also occurs, or a continuation of an ongoing vowel shift in Homeland (Seoul) Korean that also involves /ɨ/-fronting and /o/-fronting. How can patterns of social embedding untangle this question that is central to better understanding sociolinguistic competence in HSs? For Korean vowels produced in sociolinguistic interviews by Heritage (8 adult immigrants, 8 adult children of immigrants) and 10 Homeland adults, F1 and F2 were measured (13,232 tokens of /o/, 6810 tokens of /u/, and 20,637 tokens of /ɨ/), normalized and subjected to linear regression. Models predict effects of gender, age, orientation toward Korean language and culture, the speaker’s average F2 for the other shifting vowels, and duration. These models highlight HS’s sociolinguistic competence: Heritage speakers share linguistic and social patterns with Homeland Korean speakers that are absent in English. Additionally, heritage speakers lack the effects of factors attested in the English change. Full article

Acculturation is a key process in the adaptation of immigrant women to their host countries, influenced by social, cultural, and structural factors. Physical activity and sport have been identified as potential tools to facilitate this transition, promoting social inclusion and cultural adaptation. This systematic review, following the PRISMA guidelines and the Cochrane Handbook, analyzed empirical and conceptual studies published in English since 2000 from Scopus, Web of Science, SPORTDiscus, and ERIC. Inclusion criteria encompassed studies examining the relationship between physical activity, sport, and acculturation in immigrant women, while excluding non-empirical research, studies focusing exclusively on men or children, and those published in languages other than English. A total of 17 studies met the eligibility criteria. Thematic analysis revealed four key dimensions: (1) the bidirectional relationship between acculturation and sport participation, (2) gender and cultural barriers, (3) socio-economic and structural determinants, and (4) the impact on health and psychosocial well-being. The review highlights the role of physical activity in fostering social capital and integration while identifying persistent barriers such as cultural norms, economic constraints, and policy limitations. Although findings support the positive impact of these activities, further research is needed to address intersectional challenges and structural inequalities. Full article
