Empirical studies on management control and business performance are growing. However, a research gap exists regarding the tourism development/hotel small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), particularly in terms of administrative management and organizational functions. Hence, drawing from the principles of management control, specifically about the utilization of business performance evaluation techniques, this study aimed to construct a business performance index for hotel SMEs in the state of Yucatán, Mexico. To this end, the index evaluated multiple variables including investment, profitability, financing sources, operating metrics, and the utilization of financial information. To accomplish the goals, this study administered surveys to the proprietors/administrators of 139 hotel SMEs. It employed a quantitative approach and utilized the multiple linear regression model with the forward technique. Its findings demonstrate that the utilization of financial information and funding sources have the most substantial correlations with business performance. As theoretical and practical implications, a business performance index arose, replying to the needs presented by the Mexican Association of Hotels in Yucatán. Full article

The current study aims to explore the early adoption of the metaverse in the hospitality and tourism industry, with a particular focus on understanding adoption drivers for tourism providers and the anticipated benefits for end-users. Addressing the need for practical insights in a rapidly evolving digital landscape, the review identifies 33 real-world early cases of metaverse and non-fungible token (NFT) adoption, spanning from the first metaverse hotel in 2006 to ongoing digital twins of tourism destinations up to 2023. This study follows the PRISMA technique and examines early metaverse adopters at both the enterprise and destination levels, categorizing them into metaverse-based, NFT-based, and complementary-to-tourism cases. The analysis applies two theoretical frameworks: the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) to examine adoption drivers and the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) to assess expected end-user benefits. Key findings highlight promotion, brand engagement, new revenue streams, and community building as primary motivations for adoption, while user benefits include enhanced entertainment, social interaction, improved decision-making, and immersive experiences. By bridging theory and practice, this study contributes both actionable guidance for tourism stakeholders and a theoretical foundation for future research on digital transformation in tourism. This research demonstrates that penny-wise acumen in costonomics can lead to significant financial gains, transforming costs into entrepreneurial gold for enterprises. The study aims to explore how effective financial management, through the application of cost management factors, can convert costs into entrepreneurial opportunities and drive long-term business sustainability. The research utilized exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis (EFA and CFA), along with reliability analysis (Cronbach’s alpha), employing SPSS and AMOS software to examine the relationships between critical cost management factors. The findings reveal strong correlations among these factors, each playing a vital role in optimizing cost efficiency and enhancing business performance. Cost Management Effectiveness (CME) emphasizes clear cost structures, supplier evaluations, and overall cost control. Strategic Cost Management (SCM) focuses on identifying cost drivers and benchmarking against industry standards to uncover cost reduction opportunities. Cost Optimization Mastery (COM) involves monitoring production costs and assessing cost quality to ensure financial stability, while Cost Management Policy (CMP) stresses the importance of robust policies and employee engagement in controlling costs. Lastly, Cost Management Vigilance (CMV) highlights the need for the active monitoring of variable and overhead costs to maintain financial discipline. This research underscores that businesses in the manufacturing, hospitality, and commercial sectors can successfully leverage these cost management practices to foster competitive entrepreneurship and sustainable growth. Future studies should explore the role of emerging technologies in cost management to uncover new strategies for profitability and sustainability. Full article

This study explores the relationship between environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance and enterprise value in Chinese tourism companies, with differing degrees of media attention and green innovation as the multiple-chained mediating factors. In this study, we adopted a quantitative approach to collect survey data from 804 samples selected from China’s A-level tourist attractions, star-rated hotels, and travel agencies. Through rigorous statistical analysis and hypothesis testing, our results reveal a significant positive relationship between ESG performance and enterprise value in tourism companies. Media attention and green innovation demonstrate crucial chained mediating effects in this relationship. The findings expand the understanding of ESG performance’s influence on enterprise value in the tourism sector, highlighting how media visibility and innovation initiatives amplify ESG’s positive effects. This study offers practical implications for tourism companies, emphasizing the importance of integrating ESG principles into core business strategies, engaging with media, and investing in green innovation to enhance firm value. In addition, it suggests that policymakers create incentive structures to promote sustainable practices and encourage media–tourism company collaborations to communicate ESG efforts effectively. The aim of this study was to examine the overall impact of the COVID-19 outbreak on the growth capacity of tourism firms in Greece during the first wave of the pandemic. To this end, questionnaires were distributed in 548 tourism enterprises operating throughout Greece within different sub sectors (hotels, travel agents, restaurants, etc.) of the domestic tourism industry. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was employed for analyzing data. The results indicated that COVID-19 negatively influenced the growth capacity of tourism firms, which in turn affected their overall performance. In particular, the negative impact on growth capacity is reflected in dimensions such as managing economic losses and meeting financial obligations. On the other hand, factors such as psychological pressure and fear had no direct impact on the growth capacity of Greek companies during the first wave of the pandemic. A slight association between psychological pressure and growth capacity was detected, which needs further scientific investigation to be supported. Overall, the study highlighted how health crises influence the dynamics and operation of firms operating in the tourism sector, offering useful insights for addressing similar turbulences in future. In this context, domestic tourism authorities should take measurers for improving the growth capacity of Greek firms in periods of turmoil to ensure sustainability in the sector. Full article

There is a considerable debate in the literature regarding the real impact of tourism on the environment and human communities, specifically with respect to tourism’s openness to sustainable innovation. The way in which the different forms of tourism and entrepreneurial and managerial initiatives respond to the new economic, technological, social and environmental challenges acquire considerable importance for academics, practitioners, decision makers and consumers. The purpose of this research is to assess the potential for sustainable innovation in spa and health tourism in a relevant area in Romania through a survey-based study of both entrepreneurs who own a tourist accommodation unit, as well as top and middle managers from large tourism enterprises. The results of our research show that the development of spa and health tourism offers multiple examples of good practices, and that stimulating innovative entrepreneurial initiatives can lead to a sustainable reinvention of the tourism and local economy, in line with the international health tourism market. In the case of small businesses, even though sustainable initiatives are present, they are at an earlier stage and are less diversified compared to hotels, the scope of innovation is smaller and their motivation weaker. In other words, a large part of the objectives of modernization and sustainability in spa and health tourism (equipment, services, qualification and hiring of employees, sustainable and environmentally friendly orientation) are the responsibility of large hotel resorts. This research provides valuable insights into the ongoing debate surrounding the impact of tourism on the environment and local communities, with a specific focus on the potential for sustainable innovation in spa and health tourism within a significant region of Romania. This study examines how innovative work behavior (IWB) is affected by job insecurity (JI). The study also explores knowledge-hiding behavior (KHB) and team anti-citizenship behavior (TAB) as mediators. Data were collected from employees working in Egypt’s five-star hotels and category (A) travel agencies. There were 457 valid responses and they were analyzed using PLS-SEM. The findings demonstrated that there is a negative relationship between job insecurity and employee innovative work behavior. There were positive relationships between job insecurity with knowledge-hiding behavior and team anti-citizenship behavior. The findings also revealed a negative relationship between knowledge-hiding behavior and team anti-citizenship behavior with employee innovative work behavior. In addition, findings revealed that knowledge-hiding behavior mediates the relationship between JI and IWB. Contrary to the hypothesized model of the study, team anti-citizenship behavior did not mediate the relationship between JI and IWB. This research contributes to the studies on JI, KHB, and TAB in terms of IWB, specifically in the hospitality and tourism context. It also includes suggestions for coping with JI, KHB, and TAB in hotel and tourism enterprises, which may promote IWB and the overall workplace environment. Full article

This study examines how job engagement (JE) is affected by benevolent leadership (BL). This study also explores psychological safety (PS) and workplace friendship (WF) as mediators. Data were collected from employees working in Egypt’s five-star hotels and category (A) travel agencies. There were 320 valid responses that were analyzed using PLS-SEM. The findings demonstrated that there is a positive relationship between benevolent leadership and job engagement. There were positive relationships between benevolent leadership and PS/WF. The findings also revealed a positive relationship between PS/WF and job engagement. In addition, the findings revealed that psychological safety and workplace friendship mediate the relationship between BL and JE. This research contributes to the studies on BL, PS, and WF in terms of JE, specifically in the hospitality and tourism context. It also includes suggestions for enhancing the workplace environment in hotel and tourism enterprises via BL, PS, and WF. Full article

This research aims to examine the mediating effects of eco-innovation practices in the relationship between the drivers of eco-innovation and the performance of tourism and hospitality enterprises. A quantitative approach was adopted in this research using questionnaire surveys as an instrument for collecting primary data. Based on the convenience sampling technique, a total of 550 questionnaire forms were distributed to five-star hotels and travel agencies in Cairo. Out of the distributed forms, only 400 forms were filled out and returned to the researchers and thus valid for analysis, representing a response rate of 72.7%. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) using partial least squares (PLS-SEM) was employed to test the research model. The results showed the significant effect of independent variables on dependent variables through mediating variables. Multiplied path coefficients were used to measure the confidence interval (CI) for measuring the mediating relationship. The results supported the effect of eco-innovation practices as a mediating factor in the relationship between the drivers of eco-innovation and the performance of tourism and hospitality enterprises. The findings also showed that the eco-innovation drivers, which include management awareness, organizational capabilities, and environmental strategy, have a significant effect on eco-innovation practices and tourism/hospitality enterprise performance when integrating the mediating variables of eco-innovation practices. There are a few studies that have also examined a conceptual framework to examine eco-innovation practices as mediating factors in the relationship between the drivers of eco-innovation and the performance of tourism and hospitality enterprises in terms of five-star hotels and travel agencies in Egypt. Consequently, this research contributes to the literature related to tourism and hospitality management through highlighting the mediating effect of eco-innovation practices on the relationship between the drivers of eco-innovation and the performance of tourism and hospitality enterprises. This study examines how green perceived value (GPV) and green attitude (GA) are affected by environmental corporate social responsibility (ECSR). It also investigates the mediating role of environmental well-being (EWB) on the relationship between ECSR and GA and on the relationship between ECSR and GPV. A total of 910 responses gathered from the guests of travel agencies and 5-star hotels in Egypt were analyzed using PLS-SEM. The results showed positive relationships between ECSR with GA, EWB, and GPV. Positive relationships between EWB with GA and GPV also existed. In addition, there was a mediating role of EWB in the relationship between ECSR and GA and in the relationship between ECSR and GPV. The research provides a theoretical contribution to bridging the gap in studies related to ECSR and EWB in relation to GPV and GA, specifically in the tourism and hotel sector. Practically, the research provides the tourism and hotel enterprises with recommendations to improve ECSR and EWB—this could, in turn, positively impact the GPV and GA of their guests. Limitations and potential directions for future research were also presented. Full article

The global business scenario seems to be gloomy due to the economic uncertainty caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted many economic sectors and a country’s national GNP, including the tourism industry. The question is whether the influencing factors for firms involved in the tourism industry, especially in developing countries, ensure their future survival. The main aim of this paper is to examine the role of internal resources and external environmental factors on the firm performance of small–medium enterprises (SMEs) in the tourism industry, with a specific focus on SME hotels. Based on a survey carried out among hotel owners or key managerial staff in Saudi Arabia and using partial least squares (PLS), the study aimed to attain the objective of this study. Results from the statistical analysis indicate that both internal and external environmental factors have a positive impact on the performance of SME hotels. The results also revealed a more significant impact from the external environmental factors in influencing firm performance than internal resources. Implications, limitations, and recommendations for future scientific investigation are put forward. Full article

Tourism and hospitality have been recognized as leading economic sectors globally. Before the outbreak of COVID-19, it was estimated that the tourism and hospitality sector was growing by around 4% each year. Although the economic-efficiency-led hypothesis of the tourism and hospitality sector is strong, there is another perspective related to tourism and hospitality. That is, tourism and hospitality are not as “green” as they were supposed to be. Indeed, this sector is known for its outsized carbon footprint. It is estimated that, if not managed efficiently, the GHG contribution of the tourism sector will grow in the future. Specifically, the hotel business accounts for 1% of total global greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), which is huge. Responding to these significant issues, this study investigates the relationship between the corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities of a hotel enterprise and employees’ pro-environmental behavior (PEB). The mediating role of environmental-specific transformational leadership (ESTFL) and the moderating role of green perceived organizational support (GPOS) were also tested in the above relationship. The data were collected by the employees through a self-administered questionnaire. The hypothesized relations were statistically investigated by using structural equation modeling (SEM). The findings revealed that CSR activities of a hotel not only influence employees’ PEB directly, but the mediating role of ESTFL was also significant. At the same time, the conditional indirect role of GPOS was also confirmed. This study offers different theoretical and practical insights, which have been discussed in detail. Full article

Travel and tourism is one of the most affected sectors due to the COVID-19 pandemic, impacting economies, enterprises, and livelihoods worldwide. The pandemic has heavily damaged businesses across the tourism industry, including airlines, transportation, hotels, cruises, and others. Numerous tourism companies went bankrupt or had been struggling to survive, yet other ones have adapted their strategy and seized the crisis to transform their business for the post-pandemic future. This study aims at investigating the TUI Group’s CSR strategic adaptability during the COVID-19 pandemic. The case study is based on a documentary analysis including such documents as annual reports, sustainability strategy, sustainability reports, and financial statements. The findings show that the pandemic crisis moved forward the company’s transformation into a digital platform and its sustainability transformation. Moreover, the CSR strategy has been constantly adapted to the evolving COVID-19 environment. The company’s efforts aimed at maintaining sustainable value have been primarily focused on supporting and engaging employees, ensuring safe holiday packages for customers, and supporting local communities and partners. The tourism industry can significantly benefit from the blockchain since its implementation can build trust among stakeholders and improve customer satisfaction. However, most of the existing tourism-specified blockchain platforms are single-chains that provide business support for enterprises without guaranteeing transaction information privacy. Besides, these platforms are specified to a single use case and lack interoperability with other platforms to support heterogenous tourism services. This paper aims to address this issue by introducing a multi-chain architecture that utilizes multiple blockchains to enhance processing capability and provide various business services for the tourism industry. The proposed multi-chain architecture improves the interoperability between the activities in different chains by providing functional requirements in practical applications and supports the inter-ledger application. In addition, the private blockchain will be made available to allow users to access the network through central authorization. It also increases the transaction processing capability by distributing multiple tasks across the chains for large-scale applications. To demonstrate the usability and efficiency of the developed approach, a case study on hotel booking is conducted using the blockchain frameworks Winding Tree and Hyperledger Fabric. A comprehensive evaluation experiment is conducted, and the results show the significance of the proposed system. Full article

The paper deals with the issue of increasing the efficiency of business management using modern management methods and tools in tourism enterprises. The basis of the paper form hypotheses focused on the use of the concept of Balanced Scorecard, controlling, benchmarking, and talent management within the tourism enterprises. Based on the p-value (0.576) in the case of first hypothesis, we can confirm that there is no statistically significant relationship between the openness of hotels to change, innovation, and the willingness to introduce controlling into management. The p-value (0.004) achieved in the case of the second hypothesis confirmed a statistically significant relationship between the hotel classification category and the use of the modern methods in plan design. In the third hypothesis, we examined whether hotels focusing on the sales maximization tend to use their capital for modernization. Based on the validity of the inequality p-value (0.080), we confirm that there is no statistically significant relationship between the pricing approach and the use of capital. Searching strategic tool in management of a business in tourism is still an actual issue. Businesses are especially managed by financial indicators, but modern methods show the growing significance of non-financial indicators. Full article
