Background/Objectives: Maternal overweight and obesity are critical factors increasing the risk of various pregnancy complications. Maternal obesity can lead to fetal macrosomia and a heightened risk of intrauterine death, with long-term implications for the child’s health. This study aimed to analyze the incidence of obesity and its impact on pregnancy outcomes in women who delivered by cesarean section at the University Hospital “St. George”, Plovdiv. Methods: A single-center retrospective cohort study was conducted. The documentary method was used for gathering data. Records were randomly selected. The statistical methods used included mean values, confidence intervals (of mean), frequency, and the Kolmogorov–Smirnov test for normality of distribution. Data comparisons were performed using the Mann–Whitney test. Mean values of numerical variables were compared using the independent samples t-test. Results: In total, 46.36% of women in this study were affected by obesity to varying degrees, and the proportion of women who were overweight at the end of their pregnancy was 37.85%. In the studied cohort, 15.99% of women were affected by hypertensive complications. This significant prevalence of obesity highlights concerns regarding body weight among women of reproductive age. This study emphasized a strong correlation between maternal obesity, particularly severe obesity, and the occurrence of preeclampsia. Conclusions: In this study among women who delivered by cesarean section, a significant proportion of them were affected by overweight and obesity. Data for our country are insufficient, and a more in-depth study of this problem is needed. Future research should explore the long-term impacts of maternal obesity on the health of the mother and the newborn. Full article

A Bibliographic Analysis of Multi-Risk Assessment Methodologies for Natural Disaster Prevention

In light of the increasing frequency and intensity of natural phenomena, whether climatic or telluric, the relevance of multi-risk assessment approaches has become an important issue for understanding and estimating the impacts of disasters on complex socioeconomic systems. Two aspects contribute to the worsening of this situation. First, climate change has heightened the incidence and, in conjunction, the seriousness of geohazards that often occur with each other. Second, the complexity of these impacts on societies is drastically exacerbated by the interconnections between urban areas, industrial sites, power or water networks, and vulnerable ecosystems. In front of the recent research on this problem, and the necessity to figure out the best scientific positioning to address it, we propose, through this review analysis, to revisit existing literature on multi-risk assessment methodologies. By this means, we emphasize the new recent research frameworks able to produce determinant advances. Our selection corpus identifies pertinent scientific publications from various sources, including personal bibliographic databases, but also OpenAlex outputs and Web of Science contents. We evaluated these works from different criteria and key findings, using indicators inspired by the PRISMA bibliometric method. Through this comprehensive analysis of recent advances in multi-risk assessment approaches, we highlight main issues that the scientific community should address in the coming years, we identify the different kinds of geohazards concerned, the way to integrate them in a multi-risk approach, and the characteristics of the presented case studies. The results underscore the urgency of developing robust, adaptable methodologies, effectively able to capture the complexities of multi-risk scenarios. This challenge should be at the basis of the keys and solutions contributing to more resilient socioeconomic systems. Full article

The Mediterranean region, identified by scientists as a ‘climate hot spot’, is experiencing warmer and drier conditions, along with an increase in the intensity and frequency of extreme weather events. One such extreme phenomena is droughts. The recent wildfires in this region are a concerning consequence of this phenomenon, causing severe environmental damage and transforming natural landscapes. However, droughts involve a two-way interaction: On the one hand, climate change and various human activities, such as urbanization and deforestation, influence the development and severity of droughts. On the other hand, droughts have a significant impact on various sectors, including ecology, agriculture, and the local economy. This study investigates drought dynamics in four Mediterranean countries, Greece, France, Italy, and Spain, each of which has experienced severe wildfire events in recent years. Using satellite-based Earth observation data, we monitored drought conditions across these regions over a five-year period that includes the dates of major wildfires. To support this analysis, we derived and assessed key indices: the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI), and Normalized Difference Drought Index (NDDI). High-resolution satellite imagery processed within the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform enabled the spatial and temporal analysis of these indicators. Our findings reveal that, in all four study areas, peak drought conditions, as reflected in elevated NDDI values, were observed in the months leading up to wildfire outbreaks. This pattern underscores the potential of satellite-derived indices for identifying regional drought patterns and providing early signals of heightened fire risk. The application of GEE offered significant advantages, as it allows efficient handling of long-term and large-scale datasets and facilitates comprehensive spatial analysis. Our methodological framework contributes to a deeper understanding of regional drought variability and its links to extreme events; thus, it could be a valuable tool for supporting the development of adaptive management strategies. Ultimately, such approaches are vital for enhancing resilience, guiding water resource planning, and implementing early warning systems in fire-prone Mediterranean landscapes. Full article

This exploratory study investigated how health concerns related to chronic environmental contamination and how satisfaction with the human biomonitoring (HBM) process influence the perceived quality of life in the context of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contamination in the Veneto Region (Italy). We administered a questionnaire to 84 residents of the Red Area, where PFAS exposure is classified as most severe. The main findings revealed that satisfaction with HBM was positively correlated with perceived quality of life and showed a statistically significant but modest moderation effect on the relationship between PFAS-related health concerns and quality of life (explaining 17.4% of the variance). Particularly, it attenuates the negative effect that PFAS health concerns have on quality of life. Differences between subgroups revealed heightened concern regarding PFAS health risks among women vs. men and participants with children vs. those without. These results underscore the central role of relational and communication aspects of HBM programs to mitigate psychological distress and possibly contribute to higher perceived well-being. The study highlights the need for tailored public health interventions, including transparent communication, empathetic support, and community engagement, to address the psychosocial dimensions of environmental contamination. The rapid rebound of global tourism post-pandemic has intensified pressure on destinations like Istanbul and Athens, bringing overtourism debates into sharp focus. This study examined how five sustainability dimensions (economic, environmental, sociocultural, political, technological) shape residents’ overtourism perceptions and tourism support. Using PLS-SEM analysis of 285 long-term residents’ responses, this study reveals contrasting patterns between cities. In Athens, heightened awareness of environmental, economic, and sociocultural sustainability directly increases overtourism perceptions, subsequently reducing tourism support. Istanbul presents a counterpoint: environmental sustainability concerns alleviate overtourism perceptions, though without significant impact on tourism backing. Notably, political and technological dimensions show no statistically significant effects in either context. These findings demonstrate how sustainability perceptions are locally mediated, with identical factors producing divergent outcomes across cultural contexts. The study advances sustainable tourism literature by: (1) empirically validating context-dependent variations in resident attitudes, and (2) proposing a community-centered evaluation framework for policymakers. Recent study emphasizes the necessity of destination-specific strategies that prioritize residents’ nuanced sustainability concerns over generic tourism management approaches. Full article

Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in young adults, though less common than in older populations, is an emerging clinical concern with increasing incidence and diverse etiologies. Unlike classic atherosclerotic presentations, a significant proportion of AMI cases in individuals under 45 years are due to nonatherothrombotic mechanisms such as coronary vasospasm, spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD), vasculitis, hypercoagulable states, and drug-induced coronary injury. This manuscript aims to explore the multifactorial nature of AMI in young adults through a focused review of current evidence and a series of illustrative clinical cases. We present and analyze four distinct cases of young patients with AMI, each demonstrating different pathophysiological mechanisms and risk profiles—including premature atherosclerosis, substance use, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-related coronary disease, and SCAD. Despite the heterogeneity of underlying causes, early diagnosis, individualized management, and aggressive secondary prevention were key to favorable outcomes. Advanced imaging, lipid profiling, and risk factor modification played a central role in guiding therapy. AMI in young adults requires heightened clinical suspicion and a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach. Early intervention and recognition of nontraditional risk factors are essential to improving outcomes and preventing recurrent events in this vulnerable population. Full article

The growing frequency and severity of extreme events, both natural and human-induced, have heightened concerns about the resilience of power systems. Enhancing the resilience of power systems alleviates the adverse impacts of power outages caused by unforeseen events, delivering substantial social and economic benefits. Energy storage systems play a crucial role in enhancing the resilience of power systems. Researchers have proposed various single and hybrid energy storage systems to enhance power system resilience. However, a comprehensive review of the latest trends in utilizing energy storage systems to address the challenges related to improving power system resilience is required. This critical review, therefore, discusses various aspects of energy storage systems, such as type, capacity, and efficacy, as well as modeling and control in the context of power system resilience enhancement. Finally, this review suggests future research directions leading to optimal use of energy storage systems for enhancing resilience of power systems. Full article

With the widespread adoption of face masks due to global health crises and heightened security concerns, traditional face recognition systems have struggled to maintain accuracy, prompting significant research into masked face recognition (MFR). Although various models have been proposed, a comprehensive and systematic understanding of recent deep learning (DL)-based approaches remains limited. This paper addresses this research gap by providing an extensive review and comparative analysis of state-of-the-art MFR techniques. We focus on DL-based methods due to their superior performance in real-world scenarios, discussing key architectures, feature extraction strategies, datasets, and evaluation metrics. This paper also introduces a structured methodology for selecting and reviewing relevant works, ensuring transparency and reproducibility. As a contribution, we present a detailed taxonomy of MFR approaches, highlight current challenges, and suggest potential future research directions. This survey serves as a valuable resource for researchers and practitioners seeking to advance the field of robust facial recognition in masked conditions. Full article

Video surveillance systems have become pervasive in contemporary society, prompting growing concerns about their psychological and behavioral effects on individuals. This study investigates how perceived surveillance influences self-censorship and behavioral regulation in monitored environments, drawing on the conceptual framework of panoptic self-regulation and surveillance-induced anxiety. A structured questionnaire was administered to 358 university students, and data were analyzed using exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis to validate latent constructs, followed by ordinal logistic regression and mediation analysis to test key hypotheses. The results indicate that individuals who perceive higher psychological pressure due to surveillance are more likely to modify their behavior, exhibiting heightened self-awareness and restraint. Additionally, belief in the active monitoring of surveillance footage significantly amplifies behavioral vigilance. The perception of the technological omnipresence of surveillance further intensifies psychological discomfort, which mediates behavioral change. These findings conceptualize video surveillance as a socio-technical system that exerts behavioral influence through internalized psychological mechanisms. The study highlights the importance of considering the unintended consequences of surveillance technologies on autonomy and freedom, and it suggests that regulatory frameworks should account not only for legal compliance but also for the psychological impact of surveillance. The results provide empirical support for viewing surveillance systems as dynamic regulators of human behavior. Full article

This paper focuses on the complex dynamics that concern assembly line balance in the context of mass customization within manufacturing. In fact, the increase in demand for customized products has heightened the complexities associated with achieving optimal efficiency, productivity, product quality, and customer satisfaction. The research proposes a multi-criteria analysis of statistical methods to determine the fluctuation of parameters affecting the state of balance of an assembly line. A 3D matrix model is suggested to analyze the parameters managing the assembly line. This representation is executed using the MATLAB R2024b tool, and a methodology for finding the variability of parameters affecting balance through statistical approaches is proposed. We observed that changes in parameters such as task times, worker efficiency, or material flow led to significant changes in the line’s overall balance. As a result, static balancing becomes inadequate to deal with the complexities introduced by these highly variable parameters. The novelty of this paper consists of the innovative integration of multi-criteria statistical analysis and 3D matrix modeling to detect parameter variability and optimize assembly line balancing. Conventional static approaches are often unable to capture the process-dynamic aspect of modern manufacturing. This work presents a systematic methodology capable of identifying, quantifying, and moderating the variability of key operating parameters. This methodology, carried out using MATLAB-based simulations, is based on principal component analysis (PCA) and correlation analysis to detect critical factors influencing balancing efficiency. By structuring assembly line parameters in a 3D matrix representation, this research gives a holistic, data-based method for improving decision-making in balancing procedures. The research goes beyond theoretical modeling by applying the approach to a real automotive assembly line, validating its effectiveness and demonstrating its practical applicability in industrial conditions. The growing urgency of the climate crisis has heightened the importance of integrating sustainability into health education. Allied health professionals are well positioned to lead sustainable healthcare efforts, yet evidence suggests a persistent gap between student awareness and formal training. This study explored the perspectives, knowledge, and attitudes of Portuguese allied health students regarding sustainability. An online and anonymous cross-sectional survey was conducted among undergraduate and graduate students across multiple allied health disciplines. The questionnaire assessed general knowledge, perceptions of curricular integration, and attitudes toward sustainable clinical practice. A total of 247 (response rate of 8.23%) students participated, with the majority expressing high concern about climate change and strong support for environmentally responsible healthcare. However, the results revealed inconsistent awareness of healthcare’s environmental footprint and a limited exposure to structured sustainability education. Friedman tests indicated significant variability in students’ knowledge, perceived responsibility, and curricular experiences. Students identified priority themes for curricular inclusion—such as the environmental impact of the health system—and recognized their alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Good Health) and SDG 13 (Climate Action). The findings highlight the need for the systematic, competency-based integration of sustainability into allied health curricula to support a climate-resilient and ecologically responsible future healthcare workforce. Background: Teen dating violence (TDV) is a serious public health concern, with sexual and gender minority youth (SGMY) at elevated risk due to minority stress and systemic inequalities. This systematic review examines individual, relational, and contextual risk factors for TDV among SGMY. Methods: A systematic search was conducted in Scopus, Web of Science, and APA PsycInfo on 10 December 2024. Studies published between 2014 and 2024 focusing on teen dating violence (TDV) as an outcome among sexual and gender minority youth (SGMY) aged 13–19 were included. Study selection was independently performed by multiple reviewers using Rayyan. Risk of bias was assessed using the JBI Critical Appraisal Tools. Due to heterogeneity in the study design and measurement tools, a narrative synthesis was conducted. Results: Six risk domains emerged: (1) Demographic/Identity (e.g., gender, orientation, or race); (2) Psychological/Behavioral (e.g., distress or substance use); (3) Violence/Bullying (e.g., cyberbullying or exclusion); (4) Family/Sexual Abuse (e.g., family rejection); (5) Relational/Social (e.g., partner outing); and (6) School/Community (e.g., non-inclusive environments). Bisexual, pansexual, transgender, and racialized youth showed heightened vulnerability. Most studies were conducted in the USA and relied on non-validated TDV measures and cross-sectional designs, limiting comparability and causal inference. Conclusions: SGMY face unique, often overlooked TDV risks. There is a need for intersectional, longitudinal research and inclusive, developmentally appropriate prevention efforts that address both relational and structural factors. Background: In September 2023, Storm Daniel triggered catastrophic flooding across Thessaly, in central Greece, leading to the deaths of approximately 483,476 animals and heightening concerns about zoonotic diseases, particularly Q fever caused by Coxiella burnetii. Sofades, a municipality in the Karditsa region that is severely impacted by the floods, emerged as a critical area for evaluating the risk of zoonotic disease transmission. This study aimed to determine the seroprevalence status of Coxiella burnetii Phase 1 IgA antibodies among residents in the rural area of Sofades after the Daniel floods. Methods: Serum samples were obtained from a convenient sample of residents with livestock exposure between 1 March and 31 March 2024. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to detect Coxiella burnetii Phase 1 IgA antibodies. Descriptive analyses summarized demographic data, and logistic regression was employed to examine the association between gender, age, and positive ELISA results. Results: The overall seroprevalence was 16.66%. Males had a significantly higher positivity rate (28.57%) than females (6.25%). Seropositivity was more frequent among individuals aged 41–80 years, with peak prevalence observed in the 61–80 age group. Conclusions: This cross-sectional study offers a snapshot of Coxiella burnetii exposure in a high-risk rural population post-flood. The slightly higher seroprevalence in Sofades (16.66%) compared to Karditsa (16.1%) suggests limited influence of environmental factors on transmission. Despite limitations in causal inference, the findings highlight the need for enhanced surveillance and targeted public health measures. Longitudinal studies are needed to assess the long-term impact of environmental disasters on Q fever dynamics. Full article

The growing influence of technology in the healthcare industry has led to the creation of innovative applications that improve convenience, accessibility, and diagnostic accuracy. However, health applications face significant challenges concerning user privacy and data security, as they handle extremely sensitive personal and medical information. Privacy-Enhancing Technologies (PETs), such as Privacy-Attribute-based Credentials, Differential Privacy, and Federated Learning, have emerged as crucial tools to tackle these challenges. Despite their potential, PETs are not widely utilized due to technical and implementation obstacles. This research introduces a comprehensive framework for protecting health applications from privacy and security threats, with a specific emphasis on gamified mental health apps designed to manage Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children. Acknowledging the heightened sensitivity of mental health data, especially in applications for children, our framework prioritizes user-centered design and strong privacy measures. We suggest an identity management system based on blockchain technology to ensure secure and transparent credential management and incorporate Federated Learning to enable privacy-preserving AI-driven predictions. These advancements ensure compliance with data protection regulations, like GDPR, while meeting the needs of various stakeholders, including children, parents, educators, and healthcare professionals. Patient-generated health data (PGHD) enhance traditional healthcare by enabling continuous monitoring and supporting personalized care, yet concerns over privacy, security, and integration into existing systems hinder broader adoption. This study examined the perceptions, awareness, and concerns of patients and caregivers regarding PGHD and assessed their willingness to share such data for clinical, research, and commercial purposes. A cross-sectional survey was conducted from 6 to 12 November 2023, involving 400 individuals with experience using PGHD. Participants completed structured questionnaires addressing health information management, PGHD usage, and attitudes toward its application. PGHD was most commonly used by patients with chronic conditions and guardians of minors, with tethered personal health record apps frequently utilized. Respondents identified improved self-management and better access to information as key benefits. However, significant concerns about data privacy and security emerged, especially regarding non-clinical use. Younger adults, particularly those in their 20s, showed lower willingness to engage with PGHD due to heightened privacy concerns. These findings suggest that, while support for clinical use of PGHD is strong, barriers related to trust and consent remain. Addressing privacy concerns and simplifying consent processes will be essential to promote equitable and responsible PGHD utilization across diverse patient populations. Full article
