Over the past 30 years, the City of Portland, Oregon, USA, has emerged as a national leader in green stormwater infrastructure (GSI). The initial impetus for implementing sustainable stormwater infrastructure in Portland stemmed from concerns about flooding and water quality in the city’s two major rivers, the Columbia and the Willamette. Heavy rainfall often led to combined sewer overflows, significantly polluting these waterways. A partial solution was the construction of “The Big Pipe” project, a large-scale stormwater containment system designed to filter and regulate overflow. However, Portland has taken a more comprehensive and long-term approach by integrating sustainable stormwater management into urban planning. Over the past three decades, the city has successfully implemented GSI to mitigate these challenges. Low-impact development strategies, such as bioswales, green streets, and permeable surfaces, have been widely adopted in streetscapes, pathways, and parking areas, enhancing both environmental resilience and urban livability. This perspective highlights the history of the implementation of Portland’s GSI programs, current design and performance standards, and challenges and lessons learned throughout Portland’s recent history. Innovative approaches to managing runoff have not only improved stormwater control but also enhanced green spaces and contributed to the city’s overall climate resilience while addressing economic well-being and social equity. Portland’s success is a result of strong policy support, effective integration of green and gray infrastructure, and active community involvement. As climate change intensifies, cities need holistic, adaptive, and community-centered approaches to urban stormwater management. Portland’s experience offers valuable insights for cities seeking to expand their GSI amid growing concerns about climate resilience, equity, and aging infrastructure. Full article

The successful deployment of sustainable building construction (SBC) is connected to sound knowledge sharing. Concerning SBC, knowledge sharing has been identified to directly and indirectly increase innovation, environmental performance, cost saving, regulatory compliance awareness and so on. The necessity of enhancing SBC practice globally has been emphasised by earlier research. Consequently, this study aims to investigate knowledge-sharing elements to enhance SBC in South Africa (SA). Utilising a questionnaire survey, this study elicited data from 281 professionals in the built environment. Data analysis was performed with “descriptive statistics”, the “Kruskal–Wallis H-test”, and “principal component analysis” to determine the principal knowledge-sharing features (KSFs). This study found that “creating public awareness of sustainable practices”, the “content of SBC training, raising awareness of green building products”, “SBC integration in professional certifications”, an “information hub or repository for sustainable construction”, and “mentoring younger professionals in sustainable practices” are the most critical KSFs for SBC deployment. These formed a central cluster, the Green Education Initiative and Eco-Awareness Alliance. The results achieved a reliability test value of 0.956. It was concluded that to embrace the full adoption of SBC, corporate involvement is critical, and all stakeholders must embrace the sustainability paradigm. It is recommended that the principal knowledge-sharing features revealed in this study should be carefully considered to help construction stakeholders in fostering knowledge sharing for a sustainable built environment. Implementing nature-based solutions (NbSs) for wildfire risk management and other hazards has been challenging in emerging economies due to the high costs, the lack of immediate returns on investment, and stringent inclusion criteria set by organizations like the IUCN and domain experts. To address these challenges, this exploratory study proposes a new concept: green/blue initiatives. These initiatives represent intermediate steps, encompassing small-scale, community-driven activities that can evolve into recognized NbSs over time. To explore this concept, experiences related to wildfire prevention in the Biobío region of Chile were analyzed through primary and secondary source reviews. The analysis identified three initiatives qualifying as green/blue initiatives: (1) goat grazing in Santa Juana to reduce fuel loads, (2) a restoration prevention farm model in Florida called Faro de Restauración Mahuidanche and (3) the Conservation Landscape Strategy in Nonguén. They were examined in detail using data collected from site visits and interviews. In contrast to Chile’s prevailing wildfire policies, which focus on costly, large-scale fire suppression efforts, these initiatives emphasize the importance of reframing wildfire as a manageable ecological process. Lastly, the challenges and enabling factors for adopting green/blue initiatives are discussed, highlighting their potential to pave the way for future NbS implementation in central Chile. Urban areas are at the forefront in addressing global challenges such as climate change and biodiversity loss. Among the key responses are nature-based solutions, which are increasingly being integrated into policy frameworks but which require strong community engagement for their effective implementation. This paper presents the findings of surveys conducted within the Place Lab in Katowice, Poland, an initiative developed as part of an international project and used as a participatory tool for co-creating and implementing green infrastructure. The project applies both place-based and people-centred approaches to support European cities in their transition towards regenerative urbanism. Place Lab activities encourage collaboration between local authorities and residents, enhancing awareness and fostering participation in environmental initiatives. The survey data collected during the project allowed for the evaluation of changes in public attitudes and levels of engagement and for the identification of broader societal phenomena that may influence the implementation of nature-based solutions. The findings revealed, for instance, that more women were interested in supporting the project, that residents tended to be sceptical of governmental actions on climate change, and that views were divided on the trade-off between urban infrastructure such as parking and roads and the presence of green areas. Furthermore, questions of responsibility, awareness, and long-term commitment were frequently raised. Building on the survey results and the existing literature, the study proposes a set of indicators to assess the contribution of citizen participation to the adoption of nature-based solutions. While the effectiveness of nature-based solutions in mitigating climate change impacts can be assessed relatively directly, evaluating civic engagement is more complex. Nevertheless, when conducted transparently and interpreted by experts, indicator-based assessment can offer valuable insights. This study introduces a novel perspective by considering not only drivers of engagement but also the obstacles. The proposed indicators provide a foundation for evaluating community readiness and commitment to nature-based approaches and may be adapted for application in other urban settings and in future research on climate resilience strategies. Excessive reliance on traditional energy sources such as coal, petroleum, and gas leads to a decrease in natural resources and contributes to global warming. Consequently, the adoption of renewable energy sources in power systems is experiencing swift expansion worldwide, especially in offshore areas. Floating solar photovoltaic (FPV) technology is gaining recognition as an innovative renewable energy option, presenting benefits like minimized land requirements, improved cooling effects, and possible collaborations with hydropower. This study aims to assess the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) associated with floating solar initiatives in offshore and onshore environments. Furthermore, the LCOE is assessed for initiatives that utilize floating solar PV modules within aquaculture farms, as well as for the integration of various renewable energy sources, including wind, wave, and hydropower. The LCOE for FPV technology exhibits considerable variation, ranging from 28.47 EUR/MWh to 1737 EUR/MWh, depending on the technologies utilized within the farm as well as its geographical setting. The implementation of FPV technology in aquaculture farms revealed a notable increase in the LCOE, ranging from 138.74 EUR/MWh to 2306 EUR/MWh. Implementation involving additional renewable energy sources results in a reduction in the LCOE, ranging from 3.6 EUR/MWh to 315.33 EUR/MWh. The integration of floating photovoltaic (FPV) systems into green hydrogen production represents an emerging direction that is relatively little explored but has high potential in reducing costs. The conversion of this energy into hydrogen involves high final costs, with the LCOH ranging from 1.06 EUR/kg to over 26.79 EUR/kg depending on the complexity of the system. Full article

This study discusses the role of organizational pro-environmental behavior in driving sustainable development. Studies of green practices highlight their capacity to achieve ecological goals while delivering economic sustainability with business strategies for sustainable businesses and advancing environmental sustainability law. It also considers how the development of artificial intelligence, resource management, big data analysis, blockchain, and the Internet of Things enables companies to maximize supply efficiency and address evolving environmental regulations and sustainable decision-making. Through digital technology, businesses can facilitate supply chain transparency, adopt circular economy practices, and produce in an equitable and environmentally friendly manner. Additionally, intelligent business management practices, such as effective decision-making and sustainability reporting, enhance compliance with authorities while ensuring long-term profitability from a legal perspective. Integrating business innovation and digital technology within legal entities enhances economic efficiency, reduces operational costs, improves environmental sustainability, reduces paper usage, and lowers the carbon footprint, creating a double-benefit model of long-term resilience. The policymakers’ role in formulating policy structures that lead to green digital innovation is also to ensure that economic development worldwide is harmonized with environmental protection and international governance. Using example studies and empirical research raises awareness about best practices in technology-based sustainability initiatives across industries and nations, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The UI GreenMetric World University Ranking has become a widely adopted instrument for benchmarking institutional sustainability performance; nevertheless, empirically grounded evidence from universities in diverse regional contexts remains scarce. This study undertakes a rigorous appraisal of the extent to which Mahasarakham University (MSU) has institutionalized the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within its pedagogical offerings, research portfolio, community outreach, and governance arrangements during the 2021–2024 strategic cycle. Employing a mixed-methods design and guided by the 2024 UI GreenMetric Education and Research indicators, this investigation analyzed institutional datasets pertaining to curriculum provision, ring-fenced research funding, 574 peer-reviewed sustainability publications, student-led community initiatives, and supporting governance mechanisms; the analysis was interpreted through a Plan–Do–Check–Act management lens. The number of sustainability-oriented academic programs expanded from 49 to 58. Student participation in community service activities strongly recovered following the COVID-19 pandemic, and MSU’s GreenMetric score increased from 7575 to 8475, thereby elevating the institution to the 100th position globally. These gains were facilitated by strategic SDG-aligned investment, cross-sector collaboration, and the consolidation of international partnerships anchored in Thailand’s Isaan region. The MSU case provides a transferable model for universities—particularly those operating in resource-constrained contexts—endeavoring to align institutional development with the SDGs and internationally recognized quality benchmarks. The findings substantiate the capacity of transformative education and applied research to engender enduring societal and environmental benefits. Full article

The COVID-19 pandemic revealed long-standing vulnerabilities in island tourism economies such as Crete and Chios, including seasonality, overdependence on mass tourism, and limited innovation adoption. This study investigates how sustainable tourism, regional development, and innovation interconnect in these two cases. Drawing on structured questionnaires addressed to tourism stakeholders in Hersonissos (Crete) and Chios, we apply a comparative analysis through descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings reveal a common interest in diversifying tourism offerings through digital transformation and alternative tourism models. Hersonissos demonstrates higher engagement with innovation-led strategies, while Chios reflects a cautious but growing inclination toward eco-tourism and cultural tourism initiatives. The study employs a comparative cross-sectional design based on structured questionnaires addressed to 71 tourism stakeholders in Hersonissos and Chios. Data were collected through purposive sampling that was completed in July 2023. As a practical outcome, we propose the Regional Innovation Index in Tourism—a composite tool designed to assess innovation readiness at the local level. This index enables policymakers to evaluate the strategic capacity of tourism regions and supports the formulation of long-term, place-based development strategies aligned with EU policy goals and the transition to a green economy. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the development, deployment and challenges of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITSs) in Europe. Driven by the EU Directive 2010/40/EU, the deployment of ITSs has become essential for improving the safety, efficiency and sustainability of transport. The study examines how ITS technologies, such as automation, real-time traffic data analytics and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication, have been integrated to improve urban mobility and road safety. In addition, it reviews significant European initiatives and case studies from several cities, which show visible improvements in reducing congestion, reducing CO2 emissions and increasing the use of public transport. The paper highlights, despite progress, major obstacles to widespread adoption, such as technical interoperability, inadequate regulatory frameworks and insufficient data sharing between stakeholders. These issues prevent ITS applications from scaling up and functioning well in EU Member States. To overcome these problems, the study highlights the need for common standards and cooperation frameworks. The research analyses the laws, technological developments and socio-economic effects of ITSs. By promoting sustainable and inclusive mobility, ITSs can contribute to the European Green Deal and climate goals. Finally, the paper presents ITSs as a revolutionary solution for future European transport systems and offers suggestions to improve their interoperability, data governance and policy support. It is vital to stabilize pillar dams in underground reservoirs in coal mine goafs to protect groundwater resources and quarry safety, practice green mining, and protect the ecological environment. Considering the actual occurrence of coal pillar dams in underground reservoirs, acoustic emission (AE) mechanical tests were performed on dry, naturally absorbed, and soaked coal samples. According to the mechanical analysis, Quantitative analysis revealed that dry samples exhibited the highest mechanical parameters (peak strength: 12.3 ± 0.8 MPa; elastic modulus: 1.45 ± 0.12 GPa), followed by natural absorption (peak strength: 9.7 ± 0.6 MPa; elastic modulus: 1.02 ± 0.09 GPa), and soaked absorption showed the lowest values (peak strength: 7.2 ± 0.5 MPa; elastic modulus: 0.78 ± 0.07 GPa). The rate of mechanical deterioration increased by ~25% per 1% increase in moisture content. It was identified that the internal crack development presented a macrofracture surface initiating at the sample center and expanding radially outward, and gradually expanding to the edges by adopting AE seismic source localization and the K-means clustering algorithm. Soaked absorption was easier to produce shear cracks than natural absorption, and a higher water content increased the likelihood. The b-value of the AE damage evaluation index based on crack development was negatively correlated with the rock damage state, and the S-value was positively correlated, and both effectively characterized it. The research results can offer reference and guidance for the support design, monitoring, and warning of coal pillar dams in underground reservoirs. (The samples were tested under two moisture conditions: (1) ‘Soaked absorption’—samples fully saturated by immersion in water for 24 h, and (2) ‘Natural absorption’—samples equilibrated at 50% relative humidity and 25 °C for 7 days). Green roofs are increasingly being adopted as sustainable, nature-based solutions for managing urban stormwater, mitigating the urban heat island effect, and saving energy in buildings. However, the long-term performance of their individual components—particularly filter geotextiles—remains understudied, despite their critical role in maintaining system functionality. The filter layer, responsible for preventing clogging of the drainage layer with fine substrate particles, directly affects the hydrological performance and service life of green roofs. While most existing studies focus on the initial material properties, there is a clear gap in understanding how geotextile filters behave after prolonged exposure to real-world environmental conditions. This study addresses this gap by assessing the mechanical and structural integrity of geotextile filters after five years of use in both extensive and intensive green roof systems. By analyzing changes in surface morphology, microstructure, and porosity through tensile strength tests, digital imaging, and scanning electron microscopy, this research offers new insights into the long-term performance of geotextiles. Results showed significant retention of tensile strength, particularly in the machine direction (MD), and a 56% reduction in porosity, which may affect filtration efficiency. Although material degradation occurs, some geotextiles retain their structural integrity over time, highlighting their potential for long-term use in green infrastructure applications. This research emphasizes the importance of material selection, long-term monitoring, and standardized evaluation techniques to ensure the ecological and functional resilience of green roofs. Furthermore, the findings contribute to advancing knowledge on the durability and life-cycle performance of filter materials, promoting sustainability and longevity in urban green infrastructure. This study presents a comprehensive finite element investigation into the design optimization of an ultra-high temperature ceramic matrix composite thruster for green bipropellant systems. Focusing on ZrB2–SiC–Cfiber composites, it explores their thermal and mechanical response under realistic transient combustion conditions. Two geometries, a simplified and a complex full-featured model, were evaluated to assess the impact of geometric fidelity on stress prediction. The complex thruster model (CTM) offered improved resolution of temperature gradients and stress concentrations, especially near flange and convergent regions, and was adopted for optimization. A parametric study with nine wall thickness profiles identified a 2 mm tapered configuration in both convergent and divergent sections that minimized mass while maintaining structural integrity. This optimized profile reduced peak thermal stress and overall mass without compromising safety margins. Transient thermal and strain analyses showed that thermal stress dominates initially (≤3 s), while thermal strain becomes critical later due to stiffness degradation. Damage risk was evaluated using temperature-dependent stress margins at four critical locations. Time-dependent failure maps revealed throat degradation for short burns and flange cracking for longer durations. All analyses were conducted under hot-fire conditions without cooling. The validated methodology supports durable, lightweight nozzle designs for future green propulsion missions. Full article

The “Green Riyadh” project in Saudi Arabia represents a major initiative to enhance urban sustainability by expanding green spaces throughout Riyadh City. The initiative aims to improve air and water quality, increase tree and plant coverage, and promote environmental well-being for city residents. However, accurately assessing the extent and quality of green spaces remains a significant challenge. Current methods for evaluating green areas and measuring tree density are limited in precision and reliability, preventing effective monitoring and planning. This paper proposes an innovative solution that leverages live satellite imagery and advanced deep learning techniques to address these challenges. We collect extensive satellite data from two sources and then build two separate analytical pipelines. These pipelines process high-resolution satellite imagery to identify trees and measure green density in vegetated areas. The experimental results show significant improvements in accuracy and efficiency, with the YOLOv11 model achieving a mAP@50 of 95.4%, precision of 94.6%, and recall of 90.2%. These findings offer a scalable and reliable alternative to traditional methods, enabling comprehensive progress evaluation and facilitating informed decision-making for urban planning. The proposed methodology not only supports the objectives of the “Green Riyadh” project but also sets a benchmark for green space evaluation that can be adopted by cities worldwide. Full article

Tourism is recognized as one of the key enabling industries driving Thailand’s strategic transition toward the Thailand 4.0 economic model. This paper presents the development of a national technology roadmap to support the transition toward sustainable tourism in Thailand, conducted between January and October 2024. The primary objective is to promote tourism growth that is environmentally responsible, economically viable, and socially inclusive. The roadmap was developed through a combination of a literature review, statistical data, and group discussions with tourism professionals. The roadmapping process focused on aligning external drivers, strategic goals, and the current capabilities of Thailand’s technological ecosystem. The key drivers identified include environmental concerns, the advancement of digital platforms, the growing trends of an aging population, diversity, and inclusion, political instability, and the emergence of middle-income nations. The resulting roadmap outlines a strategic vision for Thailand’s tourism sector from 2024 to beyond 2030. It emphasizes the transition linking sustainability and eco-design principles to smart tourism, metaverse applications, and personalized travel experiences. Priority areas include the adoption of green technologies, sustainable practices, and advanced digital platforms. This study further recommends research and development (R&D) initiatives in sustainability, biodiversity conservation, Data Analytics, Cybersecurity, and E-Tourism solutions. Ultimately, this roadmap provides actionable guidance for tourism stakeholders in defining their roles, responsibilities, and contributions toward achieving a sustainable tourism future in Thailand. The management of spent foundry sand (SFS) presents environmental and operational challenges for foundries. According to the European Union, European foundries generate approximately 9 million tonnes of SFS annually, mainly from the production of ferrous castings (iron and steel). Nowadays, around 25% of the spent foundry sand in Europe is recycled for specific applications, primarily in the cement industry. However, the presence of chemical residues limits the application of this solution. A possible alternative for reusing the spent foundry sand is its employment as a raw material in the production of compost. Studies in the literature indicate that the amount of chemical residue present in the sand can be reduced through the composting process, making the final product suitable for different purposes. However, information about the implementation of this technology in industrial contexts is lacking. To address this issue, this paper proposes a techno-economic analysis to assess the feasibility of composting SFS on a large scale, using information gathered during the testing phase of the Green Foundry LIFE project. This project explored the reuse of sand from organic and inorganic binder processes to create compost for construction purposes, which allowed for the final product. Since the new BREF (Best Available Techniques Reference Document) introduced by the European Union at the start of 2025 recommends composting SFS as a way to reduce solid waste from foundries, this initial study can represent practical guidance for both researchers and companies evaluating the adoption of this technology.
