This study presents a multi-methodological approach combining subsurface characterization with dynamic structural assessment to evaluate Soil–Structure Interaction (SSI) mechanisms at the Palazzo Centrale. The 3D Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) and active Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves (MASW) results were compared with a lithostratigraphic core log to outline the subsurface framework. The stratigraphic framework mapped geotechnical heterogeneities within the upper 6.0 m, where a low-resistivity anomaly (≤1 log(Ω·m)) outlines a mechanically weakened, water-saturated cover deposit overlaying the basaltic lava. This characterization provides the physical baseline useful for interpreting the site response. In this framework, the ambient vibration recordings performed at the free-field sites exhibit a flat Horizontal-to-Vertical Spectral Ratio (HVSR) response within the 1.0–10.0 Hz range, whereas a localized stratigraphic peak emerges at higher frequencies near 15.0 Hz, particularly evident in the building’s courtyard. The building resonance frequency peaks, derived from the Horizontal-to-Horizontal Spectral Ratio (HHSR) analysis at 3.74 ± 0.09 Hz (NS) and 3.58 ± 0.22 Hz (EW), do not overlap with the site resonance frequencies, demonstrating a dynamic decoupling between the soil and the building within the low-to-medium frequency domain. Conversely, the secondary stratigraphic peak near 15.0 Hz overlaps with higher-order structural frequencies tracked in the HHSR datasets. Given the localized nature of this stratigraphic peak and the involvement of higher-order structural modes, this overlap suggests a limited, localized high-frequency amplification confined to specific architectural components, rather than a global site-structure hazard. Furthermore, torsional analysis reveals significant effects within the 3.8–4.0 Hz frequency band, targeting the North-East corner (peak value of 2.85 at station A4), indicating a localized dynamic anomaly due to structural heterogeneities. Overall, this multi-method approach proves highly effective for non-invasive structural diagnostics, establishing a rigorous physical reference that could be successfully integrated into future preventive conservation frameworks and routine monitoring protocols for ancient architectural heritage. The Heritage-Aligned Reconstruction Framework (HARF) was developed and initially evaluated using the Western Buddha of Bamiyan to structure evidence-constrained generative-AI heritage reconstruction. This article examines its bounded generalisation to the Temple of Bel at Palmyra, a materially, formally and iconographically contrasting heritage monument. The Dynamic Prompt Blueprint was re-instantiated using documentary evidence concerning the temple’s dimensions, limestone construction, Corinthian order, architectural layout, inscriptions and decorative programme, while retaining the framework’s top-level structure. A fourteen-item Palmyra questionnaire block was completed by 32 members of the interdisciplinary panel who also completed the Bamiyan evaluation. Within the Palmyra evaluation, Corinthian-column representation received the most favourable rating, whereas restored relief, inscription and surface detail received the least favourable rating. Eighteen respondents (56.2%) selected “none of the iterations are historically accurate” when assessing relief iconography. The paired difference in global prompt-sufficiency ratings did not reach the conventional significance threshold (p = 0.061), although ratings were positively associated across the two sites (Spearman ρ = 0.664, p < 0.001). The seven-domain keyword-coverage profiles were also positively rank-correlated (ρ = 0.771, p = 0.043). These findings support the bounded re-instantiation of HARF’s prompt schema and diagnostic evaluation logic in a contrasting heritage context. They do not establish equivalence between the two implementations, archaeological validity of the generated Temple of Bel images or validation of the complete HARF workflow. Full article

As an expression of cultural identity, food is rooted in social transformation and, in the area of the Pearl River Delta, the cuisines of Macau and Hong Kong have been shaped by global interactions. Despite a geographical adjacency, both Special Administrative Regions (SARs) display unique foodways. While typical Macanese cuisine integrates not only Portuguese and Chinese but also African and Indian fusions, the Cantonese gastronomy of Hong Kong is heavily based on street food culture and the hybridity of cha chaan teng dishes. This encyclopedia entry looks at local food traditions from colonial culinary practice to globalized consumption. It illustrates a continuous adaptiveness in the wake of socioeconomic change, as well as the resilience needed for preserving heritage. Full article

Historic urban landscapes are at continuous risk of loss due to urban modernization and the demolition of built heritage. Scan-based documentation methods such as laser scanning and photogrammetry become inapplicable, leaving demolished sites undocumented and unrecoverable through existing digital heritage workflows. This study develops a documentary-based Urban Digital Twin (UDT) framework for reconstructing demolished historic urban landscapes through the integration of historical documentation, geospatial analysis, and parametric modeling within the Historic Urban Landscape (HUL) approach. As a feasibility study, the framework reconstructs Chahar-Bagh Bala Street in Isfahan, Iran, a four-century-old promenade among the oldest urban streets in the Middle East, whose royal garden entrances, towers, water features, and promenade have been almost entirely replaced by industrial and modern structures. The methodology applies a nine-step workflow, integrating georeferencing, viewpoint reconstruction, cross-source validation, and HBIM parametric modeling, using historical maps, travel account engravings, archival photographs, and measured plans. The reconstruction confirms the historical existence and spatial locations, established through convergent visual evidence, of two lost royal garden entrances. The study further quantifies long-term historic green infrastructure loss, finding that approximately 70% of the original garden cover has been replaced. This replicable framework supports evidence-based heritage governance and sustainable urban regeneration, including the reintegration of historic green infrastructure into contemporary urban planning, particularly for rapidly transforming cities of the Global South. How do ordinary place names make a major river legible as heritage? This article examines Yellow River toponyms as everyday infrastructures through which hydrological space becomes spatialized memory in contemporary China. The study uses a nested mixed-methods design rather than treating every record as equivalent evidence. Its administrative frame contains 2249 unique current statutory township-level units in 178 county-level targets across all nine Yellow River province-level regions. A record-level audit links 1039 of the original 1314 survey records to 1008 unique current units, while 1215 units contain at least one place-specific interpretive field. Six non-exclusive tags identify hydrological space, multi-ethnic interaction, transport and trade, historical memory, state governance, and cross-cutting heritage activation. An E0–E3 rubric separates administrative identity from externally corroborated explanation, traceable survey narrative, and structural context. Forty-five cases form an evidence-graded pool, but only seven core and eleven qualified cases carry the main qualitative argument. Hydrological and historical narratives are the most widely supported layers, while interpretive coverage remains geographically and evidentially uneven. Place names make river heritage through localization, multilingual translation, mobility, temporal layering, and administrative circulation. Official standardization can preserve recognized forms, but it also produces selective legibility by making some variants, scripts, meanings, and origin accounts easier to retrieve than others. The article contributes to critical toponymy and critical heritage studies by showing how ordinary names mediate between local memory and national spatial infrastructures. It reframes the Global East as a setting where heritage is produced through accretion, translation, and database-mediated standardization, not only spectacular renaming. Full article

The Golden Triangle circuit (Delhi–Agra–Jaipur) is India’s most iconic tourism product, yet it faces mounting pressure from overtourism, environmental degradation, and economic leakage to non-regional operators. We argue that strategic management of visitor satisfaction can play a key role in transforming this high-volume circuit into a sustainable destination that delivers long-term economic growth. Drawing on expectancy disconfirmation theory (EDT), SERVQUAL (service quality), perceived value theory, social exchange theory (SET), destination competitiveness models, and systematic classification of destination attributes, this study evaluates destination attributes and visitor satisfaction. This study assesses the importance of visitor satisfaction with the Golden Triangle and proposes a comprehensive framework for its measurement and application with destination-specific attributes. It uses a qualitative methodology that incorporates an extensive review of information available through various sources and triangulates findings with autoethnography. It identifies key attributes driving tourist satisfaction in the Golden Triangle and assesses the overall current state of the circuit. Furthermore, it identifies major challenges (harassment, congestion, and leakage) and proposes actionable improvements through smart technology, community-based tourism, and real-time feedback. A comprehensive evaluation of visitor satisfaction with various destination attributes of the Golden Triangle reveals that it performs well, as the outcome shows high overall satisfaction. This study also highlights that overall visitor satisfaction is an indirect economic lever that impacts local economic activity by creating jobs and earning foreign currency. The Golden Triangle can possibly serve as a replicable model for other heritage circuits in the Global South with similar characteristics. Full article

Cruise tourism is one of the fastest-growing segments of the global tourism industry, generating significant economic benefits while also creating challenges related to overtourism, congestion, environmental pressure, and residents’ quality of life. Understanding residents’ attitudes towards tourism is therefore essential for sustainable destination management. Although previous studies have examined the roles of place attachment and quality of life in shaping tourism attitudes, evidence from cruise destinations remains limited. This study investigates the influence of place attachment and quality of life on residents’ attitudes towards tourism in two contrasting European cruise destinations: Kotor (Montenegro) and Athens/Piraeus (Greece). Additionally, it aims to explore the link between place attachment and quality of life, which remains understudied in this context. The study also investigates whether destination moderates the effect between explored variables. To address this objective, Kotor and Athens/Piraeus were purposively selected as a maximum-variation pair. A quantitative survey was conducted among 319 local residents (157 from Kotor and 162 from Athens/Piraeus). The findings indicate that both place attachment and quality of life significantly influence residents’ attitudes towards tourism. Stronger place attachment was associated with more positive perceptions of social interaction with tourists and beneficial cultural impacts, but it also influenced residents’ attitudes indirectly through perceived quality of life. Moreover, place attachment was identified as a significant determinant across all five dimensions of residents’ quality of life. Furthermore, quality-of-life dimensions, particularly heritage and commercial development, socialisation and economic opportunities, and environmental conditions, emerged as significant predictors of tourism attitudes. Destination comparisons revealed overall consistency between both cruise tourism destinations, except for the link between place attachment and health and safety benefits, which was stronger among residents of Athens. The findings provide practical implications for sustainable tourism planning by highlighting the importance of incorporating residents’ perceptions into destination management. Full article

Positioned as a node of low-end globalization, the Chungking Mansions in Hong Kong’s Tsim Sha Tsui represents a transnational urban space with many ethnic restaurants, grocery stores, shops and cheap hotels. As a vertical hub of superdiversity, the building features significant number of people from South Asia (e.g., India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal), Southeast Asia, Africa and beyond. Unlike most ethnic enclaves and multicultural areas that feature horizontal spatial organization, the Chungking Mansions conceptually represents a vertical ‘Little South Asia’ or ‘Little UN’ condensed into one building. The transient and anonymous Chungking Mansions is something of a ‘non-place’ but it also has a sense of community. The building over time gained a bad reputation as a mysterious, dodgy, shady and dangerous ethnic place where violence and crimes take place. This article aims to demystify the Chungking Mansions from under-explored sociolinguistic/multilingual perspectives. Languages and symbols inscribed in the linguistic/semiotic landscape, we argue, represent important anthropogenic impacts on geography and nature, which constitute salient entry points into understanding how migration, low-end globalization and superdiversity leave traces on the urban landscape. This study documents and shows how various multilingual signs and cultural and religious symbols enact ethnic, linguistic, cultural and religious identities and produce and reproduce social meanings alongside the building’s verticality. These materially and symbolically contribute to a vertical geography of superdiversity. Full article

In the current digital world, there is an incredible amount of information at our fingertips. In fact, there is so much information that the sheer amount of data can be overwhelming. As historians, archaeologists, and cultural heritage experts, a significant amount of research or the use of assistants can be necessary simply to shift through centuries of publications to compile relevant resources before cultural questions can be adequately explored. This challenge compounds when attempting cross-cultural analyses. The Database of Religious History (DRH) was initially created in 2012 by Dr. Edward Slingerland as a digital tool designed to help offset these challenges and provide a means for experts, students, and historical enthusiasts to begin to explore significant religious questions without wading through centuries of data. In this article, the authors discuss how information for the DRH is collected from experts, and how it can be organized and queried to explore religious questions. While the database covers the global history of religion, this discussion focuses in particular on its use for exploring the ancient Mediterranean world. The authors also discuss pedagogical resources for incorporating the DRH into classrooms to improve students’ digital literacy. Full article

This research project aimed to create a complete and representative picture of the facial heritage of the Canary Islands, by accommodating the interpretations of recent genome studies and explorations regarding the identity of the ancient Canarians, alongside facial anthropology and comparative analysis with a modern population. This project therefore represents an exciting combination of identity, migration, forensics and archaeology. Facial depictions were produced for fifty indigenous skulls housed at El Museo Canario of Gran Canaria, using the latest forensic technology along with well-established morphometrical standards. To our knowledge, this project represents the most extensive craniofacial analysis study of a single population from anywhere in the world. An exhibition at the El Museo Canario of Gran Canaria provided valuable public engagement in relation to anthropology and archaeology, while at the same time presenting the visualisation of people from the past. The research is timely and of global benefit within the wider cultural and social debate relating to identity, migration and nationality, demonstrating historical evidence for global migration as an ancient pattern rather than a recent phenomenon. Insects are fundamental to ecosystem functioning and human welfare, yet their multifaceted contributions to ecological services, food security, rural livelihoods, and cultural heritage remain insufficiently represented in mainstream scientific research and policy. Despite growing global recognition of insect decline and the potential of entomophagy to address food system challenges, integrated evidence linking global ecological knowledge with community-level indigenous practices is lacking, particularly in sub-Saharan African contexts. A narrative bibliometric review was conducted through systematic searches of Web of Science, Scopus, and PubMed databases, supplemented by FAO, IPBES, and MDPI Insects repositories. Searches were conducted between January 2024 and May 2026 using keyword combinations spanning entomophagy, ecosystem services, insect decline, indigenous knowledge and edible insects in Africa. Four thematic dimensions are synthesised: (1) ecological services, (2) nutritional value and food security, (3) economic contribution and livelihoods, and (4) socio-cultural and ethnomedicinal significance. The Venda region of Limpopo Province emerges as a compelling case study of how insect–human relationships intersect with biodiversity conservation, food security, and rural development. Actions include integrating indigenous knowledge with scientific research, strengthening sustainable community-based insect harvesting practices, and incorporating edible insects into South Africa’s food, nutrition, and biodiversity policies in alignment with global sustainability and biodiversity goals. This pilot study quantified perceptions of abandoned vernacular villages (Khirbeh) among 359 purposively sampled Jordanian residents with active ancestral ties. Results showed strongly positive perceptions overall (grand mean = 1.666 on a 5-point scale where 1 = strong agreement), with ceiling effects (23% “all 1s”) indicating limited scale granularity. A four-factor model (Cultural Heritage, Place & Space [PS], Social Memory [SM], Community Identity [CI]) achieved acceptable global fit (CFI = 0.915, RMSEA = 0.065) but failed to demonstrate discriminant validity: PS and SM were empirically indistinguishable (r = 0.80; √AVE < intercorrelation), so the model is not supported. PS and SM together explained 52.6% of CI variance, but unique contributions were uninterpretable due to multicollinearity (VIFs = 2.78, 2.65). Within this connected subsample, respondents under 30 reported stronger place attachment than those aged 45+ (p < 0.001), but this finding does not address population-level generational trends because disconnected individuals were excluded. No causal claims are warranted given the cross-sectional design, purposive sampling, failure of discriminant validity, and ceiling effects. Findings are mixed (descriptive hypotheses supported; factor structure not supported); the study provides only hypothesis-generating evidence and offers no policy recommendations. Alternative structures (bifactor, two-factor combining PS/SM) require testing with larger samples and revised instruments. Full article

The nineteenth century witnessed a significant transnational movement of European musicians and their pedagogical traditions across continents. Among the figures who contributed to this process, the Belgian flutist and composer Mathieu-André Reichert (1830–1880) occupies a distinctive position—trained in the Franco-Belgian tradition, he emigrated to Brazil, where he introduced the Boehm-system flute and produced pedagogical materials that continue to be used in flute education across a range of national traditions. This study examines Reichert’s method, 7 Exercices Journaliers pour la Flûte, Op. 5, from dual perspectives: a structural–pedagogical analysis of the seven exercises and a cultural–historical contextualization of the method’s transnational circulation. Designed as a qualitative research study, this work employed document analysis as the data collection tool and thematic analysis as the method for data analysis and interpretation. The B. Schott’s Söhne (Mainz) edition of the method was examined as the primary source; secondary data was obtained from articles, theses, books, and digital sources. Each exercise was examined in terms of structural characteristics—including meter, metronome speed, melodic patterns, and harmonic structure—and the technical demands and potential pedagogical applications associated with articulation, tongue–finger coordination, lip flexibility, and breath control. The findings reveal that the method possesses a distinctive structural organization that systematically cycles through all keys, employs a different melodic pattern in each exercise, and consistently embeds technical demands within harmonic and melodic contexts. Beyond its pedagogical content, the study traces the method’s cultural trajectory—from its composition in nineteenth-century Brazil through its adoption by French school luminaries, such as Marcel Moyse, Michel Debost, and Trevor Wye, to its current use in music education programs across diverse cultural contexts, including Türkiye. The convergence of structural–pedagogical and cultural–historical analysis suggests that the method’s continued relevance across diverse teaching traditions reflects not only its coherent structural design but also broader processes of cultural transfer, the mobility of musicians and their pedagogical ideas, and the formation of transnational pedagogical networks in instrumental music education. The Abu Dhabi Coastal Sabkha: A Literature Review on Its Scientific Value, Environmental Vulnerability, and Sustainable Conservation as a UNESCO Tentative List Geoheritage Site

Abu Dhabi Sabkha, located along the southern margin of the Arabian Gulf, is among the most scientifically significant arid coastal systems on Earth. Submitted by the United Arab Emirates to the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List in 2018 under natural heritage criterion (viii), the site is currently the only documented coastal sabkha where all four diagnostic sedimentary layers, lagoon mud, microbial mat, gypsum mud, and anhydrite nodules, co-occur within a single coastal setting, south of Al Dhabaya and Abu Al Abyadh Islands. This review evaluates Abu Dhabi Sabkha as a geological heritage system by synthesizing its formation processes, UNESCO significance, complete sabkha sequence, microbial and evaporite processes, climatic setting, environmental sensitivity, and conservation requirements. The site operates under a hyper-arid climatic regime with a documented warming trend of +0.43 °C per decade over 1981–2025 (NASA POWER MERRA-2), confirming that the evaporative processes sustaining its geological record are intensifying. Microbial mats facilitate dolomite mineralization via Extracellular Polymeric Substances at a scale unmatched elsewhere in the Arabian Gulf, while gypsum mud and anhydrite nodules record advanced supratidal evaporitic development. Comparative analysis with sabkha systems in Qatar, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Oman confirms that no other regional coastal sabkha preserves equivalent stratigraphic completeness within a single, actively forming setting. The site faces mounting pressures from urban expansion, coastal reclamation, off-road vehicle movement, groundwater modification, and the increasing frequency of extreme rainfall events, all of which can permanently damage fragile surface structures and microbial systems. Sustainable conservation requires protection zoning, controlled access, multi-scale satellite and drone monitoring, groundwater tracking, and integration into coastal planning frameworks. Abu Dhabi Sabkha should be recognized not as marginal saline terrain, but as a globally important geoheritage system whose scientific value depends on the active preservation of biological, chemical, and physical processes operating together within an irreplaceable coastal setting. ‘Find Your Float’: A Public Health Approach to Addressing Drowning Inequities in People of African, Caribbean and Asian Heritage: A Cross-Sectional Study

Drowning is a largely preventable global public health problem. Many unintended drownings are linked to the initial responses to cold-water immersion (cold shock), which includes a rapid involuntary cardio-respiratory response that increases the risk of aspirating water within the first two minutes of immersion. Floating rather than struggling to swim can help survival in this circumstance. In light of early research and subsequent changes in anthropometry, we are re-examining whether bone mineral density (BMD) in people from African, Caribbean, and Asian communities influences their float. This study examined predictors of float outcome. A total of 101 participants of African, Caribbean, Asian, or mixed heritage were recruited; 96 attempted a two-minute supine float following instruction and practice, of whom 89 were successful. Body fat percentage strongly correlated with buoyancy and floating outcome, while other predictors, including BMD, showed weak or no association. Passive floaters (no movement required) demonstrated greater buoyancy and less exertion than active floaters (purposeful movement required). These findings suggest that body fat percentage is the primary factor influencing float outcome, and that with appropriate instruction and practice, individuals of African, Caribbean and Asian heritage can “find their float”. The results indicate that floating is a learnable competence and highlight the need for integrated drowning prevention strategies combining existing campaigns with accessible, community-based practices and co-produced approaches to improve engagement and equity.
