This study was conducted in Armenia and included 32 pregnant women with TV infection and 30 healthy controls. The vaginal virome includes viruses that infect human cells and unicellular eukaryotes such as Trichomonas vaginalis (TV). Among these are Trichomonas vaginalis viruses (TVVs), double-stranded RNA viruses from the Totiviridae family, and giant DNA viruses that replicate in protozoa. This study investigated the presence of TVVs and giant protozoan viruses in pregnant women with trichomoniasis in Armenia and explored their potential associations with adverse pregnancy outcomes. Vaginal and urethral samples were collected from 32 pregnant women with confirmed TV infection and 30 healthy pregnant controls. TVVs and giant viruses (Marseilleviridae, Mimiviridae, Phycodnaviridae) were detected using qRT-PCR. Viral RNA and DNA were extracted from clinical samples and TV cultures, followed by quantification and gene expression analysis. Selected TVVs were visualized via scanning electron microscopy. All TV-positive women carried at least one TVV strain, with 94% harboring multiple TVV types and TVV4 being the most common. TV infection was significantly associated with preterm birth and premature rupture of membranes (PPROM). Giant viruses were identified in all TV-positive cases but in only 40% of controls. Marseilleviridae gene expression was observed in TV cultures, suggesting possible interactions. These findings highlight a potential role for protozoan viruses in reproductive complications and warrant further investigation. Full article

Aerosols play an important role in global meteorology and climate, as well as in air transport and human health, but there are still many unknowns on their effects and importance, in particular for the coarser (giant and ultragiant) aerosol particles. In this study, we aim to exploit the synergy between Raman lidar and Ka-band cloud radar to enlarge the size range in which aerosols can be observed and characterized. To this end, we developed an inversion technique that retrieves the aerosol microphysical properties based on cloud radar reflectivity and linear depolarization ratio. We applied this technique to a 6-year-long dataset, which was created using a recently developed methodology for the identification of giant aerosols in cloud radar measurements, with measurements from Potenza in Italy. Similarly, using collocated and concurrent lidar profiles, a dataset of aerosol microphysical properties using a widely used inversion technique complements the radar-retrieved dataset. Hence, we demonstrate that the combined use of lidar- and radar-derived aerosol properties enables the inclusion of particles with radii up to 12 µm, which is twice the size typically observed using atmospheric lidar alone. Proteus mirabilis is a zoonotic pathogen that poses a growing threat to both animal and human health due to rising antimicrobial resistance (AMR). It is widely found in animals, including China’s nationally protected captive giant and red pandas. This study isolated Proteus mirabilis from panda feces to assess AMR and virulence traits, and used whole-genome sequencing (WGS) to evaluate the spread of resistance genes (ARGs) and virulence genes (VAGs). In this study, 37 isolates were obtained, 20 from red pandas and 17 from giant pandas. Multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains were present in both hosts. Giant panda isolates showed the highest resistance to ampicillin and cefazolin (58.8%), while red panda isolates were most resistant to trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (65%) and imipenem (55%). Giant panda-derived strains also exhibited stronger biofilm formation and swarming motility. WGS identified 31 ARGs and 73 VAGs, many linked to mobile genetic elements (MGEs) such as plasmids, integrons, and ICEs. In addition, we found frequent co-localization of drug resistance genes/VAGs with MGEs, indicating a high possibility of horizontal gene transfer (HGT). This study provides crucial insights into AMR and virulence risks in P. mirabilis from captive pandas, supporting targeted surveillance and control strategies. Full article

I use Shakespeare to teach acting to students. A key to my work is impression management: what Shakespeare called reputation. I view the management of reputation as a route into Shakespearean character, which I present to students as a mask attuned to sacred values. The physical basis from which the actor can discover the mask is what Hamlet calls ‘smoothness’, which I explain with an acting exercise. We discover the force of sacred values by noticing the ubiquity of keywords in the text such as honor, virtue, reason, shame and faith. By holding characters to the fire of their sacred values, I shift the actor’s attention from an individualist idea of authentic representation towards a sense of character as a battleground of mind-shaping. The resulting performance work is scaled up to a more expansive and energized degree than the actor may be used to delivering in a social media-saturated environment in which what is often prioritized is a quasi-confessional self-revelation. The revelation of an inner life then emerges through a committed exploration of antithetical relations, a strategy basic both to mask work and to Shakespeare’s poetics. The actor finds their personal connection to the material by facing the contradiction between the objective standards of behavior demanded of the character and the character’s attempt to control their status, that is, how they are seen. The final value of the performance work is that the actor learns how to manage their reputation so that they come to appear like a giant who is seen from a distance. Full article

Habitat Suitability Evaluation of Chinese Red Panda in Daxiangling and Xiaoxiangling Mountains

The Chinese red panda (Ailurus styani) is a rare and endangered animal in China; the increase in global temperature and the interference of human activities have caused irreversible effects on the suitable habitat of wild red pandas and threatened their survival. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out scientific research and protection for Chinese red pandas. In this study, the MaxEnt model was used to predict and analyze the suitable habitats of Chinese red pandas in the large and small Xiangling Mountains. The results showed that the main ecological factors affecting the suitable habitat distribution of Chinese red pandas in the Daxiangling Mountains are the average slope (45.6%, slope), the distance from the main road (24.2%, road), and the average temperature in the coldest quarter (11%, bio11). The main ecological factors affecting the suitable habitat distribution of Chinese red pandas in the Xiaoxiangling Mountains are bamboo distribution (67.4%, bamboo), annual temperature range (20.7%, bio7), and the average intensity of human activities (8.7%, Human Footprint). The predicted suitable habitat area of the Daxiangling Mountains is 123.835 km2, and the predicted suitable habitat area of the Xiaoxiangling Mountains is 341.873 km2. The predicted suitable habitat area of the Daxiangling Mountains accounts for 43.45% of the total mountain area, and the predicted suitable habitat area of the Xiaoxiangling Mountains accounts for 71.38%. The suitable habitat area of the Xiaoxiangling Mountains is nearly three times that of the Daxiangling Mountains, and the proportion of suitable habitat area of the Xiaoxiangling Mountains is much higher than that of the Daxiangling Mountains. The suitable habitat of Chinese red pandas in the Daxiangling Mountains is mainly distributed in the southeast, and the habitat is coherent but fragmented. The suitable habitat of Chinese red panda in Xiaoxiangling Mountains is mainly distributed in the east, and the habitat is more coherent. The results of this study can provide a scientific basis for the protection of the population and habitat of Chinese red pandas in Sichuan. Full article

Background and Objectives: Although cyanoacrylate–polylactic acid (CA + PLA) patches shorten the time to hemostasis after partial hepatectomy, their long-term biocompatibility remains uncertain. We compared the 5-month histopathological footprint of a novel CA + PLA patch (Study group) with a licensed fibrinogen/thrombin matrix (TachoSil® group) and electrocautery (Control group). Methods: Thirty-three male Wistar rats underwent a 3 × 1.5 cm hepatic segment resection and were randomized to the Control (n = 5), Study (n = 14), or TachoSil® (n = 14) group. The animals were sacrificed on postoperative day (POD) 50, 100, or 150. Blinded semiquantitative scoring (0–3) was used to capture inflammation intensity, and the number of neutrophils (PMNs), lymphocytes (Ly’s), isolated histiocytes, and foreign-body giant cells (FBGCs). Results: The proportions of animals in each group across the different sacrifice time points were homogeneous (χ2 = 4.34, p = 0.36). The median inflammation remained mild (2 [IQR 1–2]) in the Control and Study groups but lower in the TachoSil® group (1 [1–2], p = 0.47). The FBGC scores differed markedly (score ≥ 2: 64% in Study, 0% in Control, 14% in TachoSil®; p < 0.001). Fibrosis occurred almost exclusively in the Study group (79% vs. 0%; χ2 = 22.4, p < 0.001). Mature vessels were most frequently observed in the TachoSil® group (50%, aOR = 5.1 vs. Study, p = 0.04). Abscesses only developed in the Study group (29%, p = 0.046). Within the TachoSil® group, inflammation (ρ = −0.62, p = 0.019) and Ly infiltration (ρ = −0.76, p = 0.002) declined with time; no significant temporal trends emerged in the Study group. Conclusions: At the five-month follow-up, there was an exuberant foreign-body reaction, dense collagen deposition, and a higher abscess rate around the CA + PLA patch compared with both TachoSil® and cautery. Conversely, TachoSil® evolved toward a mature, well-vascularized scar with waning inflammation. These findings underscore the importance of chronic-phase evaluation before clinical adoption of new hemostatic biomaterials. Full article

In Gram-negative bacteria, lipopolysaccharides (LPSs, also known as endotoxin) can induce extensive immune responses that will enable victims to produce severe septic shock syndrome. Because of the high mortality of sepsis in the face of standard treatment, advance detoxification schemes are urgently needed in clinics. Herein, we described a supramolecular detoxification approach via direct host–guest complexation by a giant macrocycle. Cationic pentaphen[3]arene (CPP3) bearing multiple quaternary ammonium groups was screened as a candidate antidote. CPP3 exhibited robust binding affinity toward LPS with an association constant of (4.79 ± 0.29) × 108 M−1. Co-dosing with an equivalent amount of CPP3 has been demonstrated to decrease LPS-induced cytotoxicity on a cellular level through inhibiting ROS generation and proinflammatory cytokine expression. In vivo experiments have further proved that post-treatment by CPP3 could significantly improve the survival rate of LPS-poisoned mice from 0 to 100% over a period of 3 days, and inflammatory abnormalities and tissue damage were also alleviated. Precise Re-Os isotopic ages of the Jinduicheng and Donggou Mo deposits in the East Qinling orogenic belt can shed light on the controversies about multiple-stage pulses of mineralization and further elucidate the genesis and metallogenic process of the deposits. In this study, we propose two major events of Mo mineralization in this orogenic belt occurring during the Late Mesozoic: the early stage of 156–130 Ma and late stage of 122–114 Ma. Results of molybdenite Re-Os isotopic analysis reveal that the Jinduicheng deposit formed at 139.2 ± 2.9 Ma, while the Donggou deposit exhibited two-stage mineralization at 115.4 ± 1.6 Ma and 111.9 ± 1.3 Ma. These isotopic ages align with the spatiotemporal evolution of coeval ore-barren granites exposed in eastern Qinling, pointing to a close genetic relationship between the magmatism and mineralization that was controlled by the same tectonic activity, likely in a post-collisional setting. This highlights the multiple-stage Mo mineralization and provides evidence for further understanding the geodynamics and metallogenic process in the eastern Qinling orogenic belt. Full article

Synthetic nanopores were recently demonstrated with memristive and nonlinear voltage-current behaviors, akin to ion channels in a cell membrane. Such ionic devices are considered a promising candidate for the development of brain-inspired neuromorphic computing techniques. In this work, we show the composite behavior of nanopore-array large memristors, formed with different membrane materials, pore sizes, electrolytes, and device arrangements. Anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) membranes with 5 nm and 20 nm diameter pores and track-etched polycarbonate (PCTE) membranes with 10 nm diameter pores are tested and shown to demonstrate memristive and nonlinear behaviors with approximately 107–1010 pores in parallel when electrolyte concentration across the membranes is asymmetric. Ion diffusion through the large number of channels induces time-dependent electrolyte asymmetry that drives the system through different memristive states. The behaviors of series composite memristors with different configurations are also presented. In addition to helping understand fluidic devices and circuits for neuromorphic computing, the results also shed light on the development of field-assisted ion-selection-membrane filtration techniques as well as the investigations of large neurons and giant synapses. Further work is needed to de-embed parasitic components of the measurement setup to obtain intrinsic large memristor properties. Full article

Understanding the activity patterns of a species is essential for developing sound conservation and management plans. In this study, we used a camera-trapping technique to determine the activity patterns of bharal (Pseudois nayaur) in a marginal population in Wolong National Nature Reserve, Sichuan, China. Our results showed that these animals preferred to be active in the daytime from 08:00 to 20:00, with an activity peak between 10:00 and 14:00. In addition, we found that the species had a seasonal activity pattern with higher activity frequency in summer than in winter and that bharal were most active in a temperature range of 3–11 °C and at night with a waxing crescent moon, implying that the activity rhythm of the species is an adaptation to a subtropical high-altitude alpine area with vertical zonation in temperature. The pattern of movement and activity was also correlated with the moon phase. Full article

Aging is associated with complex immune dysfunction that contributes to the onset and progression of the “geriatric giants”, including frailty, sarcopenia, cognitive decline, falls, and incontinence. Central to these conditions is immunosenescence, marked by thymic involution, the loss of naïve T cells, T-cell exhaustion, impaired B-cell class switch recombination, and increased autoreactivity. Concurrently, innate immunity deteriorates due to macrophage, neutrophil, and NK cell dysfunction, while chronic low-grade inflammation—or “inflammaging”—amplifies systemic decline. Key molecular pathways such as NF-κB, mTOR, and the NLRP3 inflammasome mediate immune aging, interacting with oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and epigenetic modifications. These processes not only impair infection control and vaccine responsiveness but also promote tissue degeneration and multimorbidity. This review explores emerging interventions—ranging from senolytics and immunonutrition to microbiome-targeted therapies and exercise—that may restore immune homeostasis and extend healthspan. Despite advances, challenges remain in translating immunological insights into clinical strategies tailored to older adults. Standardization in microbiome trials and safety optimization in senolytic therapies are critical next steps. Integrating geroscience into clinical care could help to mitigate the burden of aging-related diseases by targeting fundamental drivers of immune dysfunction. Full article

Abstract
Background and Clinical Significance: Myxoid liposarcoma (MLS) is a malignant soft tissue tumor that often presents as a painless, slow-growing mass and is known for its atypical extrapulmonary metastatic pattern. Background and Clinical Significance: Myxoid liposarcoma (MLS) is a malignant soft tissue tumor that often presents as a painless, slow-growing mass and is known for its atypical extrapulmonary metastatic pattern. Although sciatic nerve involvement is rare, when present, it usually causes neurologic symptoms. In this case, a large MLS silently expanded and completely encased the sciatic nerve without causing deficits, highlighting the importance of early imaging, multidisciplinary planning, and individualized surgical strategy in managing complex soft tissue sarcomas. Case Presentation: This case report describes a 67-year-old male with a 30 cm encapsulated myxoid liposarcoma of the posterior left thigh. The tumor had grown insidiously over one year and completely encased the sciatic nerve without causing pain, paresthesia, or motor impairment. Selective embolization was performed preoperatively to minimize blood loss. A posteromedial surgical approach allowed for en bloc resection with negative margins and preservation of sciatic nerve integrity. Histopathology confirmed a myxoid liposarcoma composed primarily of spindle-shaped tumor cells. The patient experienced no postoperative complications or neurologic deficits. At the two-year follow-up, he remains disease-free with full functional recovery. Conclusions: This case illustrates the potential for large, asymptomatic myxoid liposarcomas to encase critical neurovascular structures without infiltration. Preoperative embolization as part of a multidisciplinary plan was key to achieving safe resection and excellent functional outcomes. Full article

The coffee-ring effect, while harnessed in diverse fields such as biosensing and printing, poses challenges for achieving uniform particle deposition. Controlling this phenomenon is thus essential for precision patterning. This study proposes a novel method to regulate coffee-ring formation by tuning surface wettability via integrated nanoporous and hexagonal microstructures. Four distinct surface types were fabricated using UV nanoimprint lithography: planar, porous planar, hexagonal wall, and porous hexagonal wall. The evaporation behavior of colloidal droplets and subsequent particle aggregation were analyzed through contact angle measurements and confocal microscopy. Results demonstrated that nanoscale porosity significantly increased surface wettability and accelerated evaporation, while the hexagonal pattern enhanced droplet stability and suppressed contact line movement. The porous hexagonal surface, in particular, enabled the formation of connected dual-ring patterns with higher particle accumulation near the contact edge. This synergistic design facilitated both stable evaporation and improved localization of particles. The findings provide a quantitative basis for applying patterned porous surfaces in evaporation-driven platforms, with implications for enhanced sensitivity and reproducibility in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and other biosensing applications. This article engages with earlier scholarly discussions on Genesis 6:1–4 and proposes that, contrary to the majority view, Genesis 6:1–4 does not presuppose knowledge of the flood narrative. Instead, its primary literary role is to introduce the Nephilim in anticipation of the forthcoming land promise and conquest narrative. I argue that the Nephilim are not necessarily read as divinely inspired beings but are instead associated with other pre-Israelite settlers characterized by their immense size. The inconsistent biblical depiction of the promised land—including the Transjordanian territory—and the conflation of various giant terms further suggest that the Nephilim in Genesis 6:4 are linked to the broader conquest narrative and associated traditions, particularly the eradication of giant groups such as the Rephaim.
