This study focuses on the design and development of instructional materials tailored for the subject fundamentals of food processing, with the primary objective of equipping students with foundational knowledge and practical competencies essential to understanding core concepts and principles within the discipline. The instructional content was purposefully crafted to align with established course learning outcomes and the broader curricular framework. Drawing upon contemporary research and pedagogical best practices, the materials were customized to address the specific academic needs, interests, and learning preferences of students. Emphasis was placed on interactivity and inclusivity, with the integration of varied media formats to support diverse learning styles and enhance accessibility. The expert’s evaluation of the instructional materials is based on the three criteria: content, organization and structure, and support for learning. Overall, the instructional material has a mean of 3.71, with a verbal interpretation of high evidence and a standard deviation of 0.11, indicating high reliability. The highest mean score is 3.79 for the content category. This indicates that the instructional material is highly effective in aligning with course requirements, currently accurate, and bias-free. The lowest mean score is 3.67 on organization structure and support for learning. These scores suggest that while these areas are well regarded, they have certain aspects that could be further improved. Moreover, the materials must exhibit flexibility and adaptability to accommodate various teaching methodologies. They should seamlessly integrate with various instructional strategies, including project-based learning, problem-based learning, and hands-on activities. This versatility ensures that educators can employ diverse approaches to cater to their students’ needs and learning preferences. Full article

While generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is increasingly used by university students for writing support, less is known about its role in discipline-specific professional tasks. This study examines how pre-service primary teachers integrate and conceptualise GenAI when designing Teaching Units for English for Young Learners (EYL), with a focus on whether AI is positioned as a substitute for pedagogical reasoning or as a support within teacher decision-making. The qualitative study involved 75 fifth-year pre-service teachers at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano (Italy), working in 23 groups. Data included 23 Teaching Units and 10 AI Use Reports, analysed through document analysis and thematic coding. GenAI was used mainly for material production (visual and text generation, idea generation, and text revision) and resource adaptation, with limited evidence of use for macro- or micro-planning decisions (objectives, sequencing, assessment). Prompts were often underspecified, but reports described iterative refinement and critical adaptation to improve age appropriateness and reduce lexical overload. Overall, within a transparent course framework, pre-service teachers retained pedagogical ownership while using GenAI as a supplementary resource, underscoring the need to develop pedagogically grounded AI literacy (prompt design, evaluation, and disclosure). The integration of virtual museums into education has emerged as an innovative approach embraced by both teachers and learners, reflecting the broader impact of virtual reality (VR) applications in education. This study puts forward a pedagogical framework for utilizing virtual museums in teaching art history and investigating their impact on the art history curriculum. In this context, two free online museums are used as teaching materials, representing 3D interactive learning environments that enable immersive exploration of cultural heritage. Grounded in the Theory of Technology-Mediated Learning, this research adopts a hybrid methodological approach to track the art history courses of 75 Chinese undergraduates through experiments, questionnaires, and structured interviews over a four-week period. The findings demonstrate that virtual museum-integrated instruction significantly enhances learning effectiveness over sustained use, actively promotes learner engagement, and fosters greater autonomy. Importantly, learners prioritize educational value and authenticity in virtual museum features, while also expressing a strong preference for technologically mature platforms. This research contributes to understanding the impact of VR on digital transformation in the educational sector by providing a validated instructional model that integrates virtual museums into art history curricula, offering educators a replicable framework for implementation. Future studies should investigate the relationship between emotional engagement and academic performance within virtual museums to further refine both pedagogical strategies and educational virtual reality design. Ultrasound-guided femoral vascular access (UFVA) is a crucial step in cardiovascular intervention, yet training models remain costly, anatomically limited, or insufficiently durable. This research aimed to develop and evaluate a reusable, self-healing vascularised leg phantom in collaboration with clinicians. This bifurcating vascular model was cast in Plastisol using a customisable silicone mould design. The material exhibited a Shore OO hardness of 18.0 ± 2.2, a speed of sound of 1454 ± 15 m/s, an acoustic attenuation of 1.66 ± 0.02 × 106 kg/m2s, and healed 18G needle lesions within 3 h. Training capabilities were evaluated in a workshop involving 18 medical students: FVA times improved by more than 60% after 5 min of free practice. Qualitative feedback was collected from 31 medical educators via a seven-question Likert survey, with most reporting they would adopt the phantom for teaching. Phantoms cost £7.87 for materials, yet educators valued the models at £100–£500, underscoring its perceived utility. Compared to commercial alternatives, this in-house production approach reduced costs by 10–60 times, achieving comparable durability and anatomical fidelity. This study establishes a scalable, ultra-low-cost method for producing anatomically realistic, self-healing vascular phantoms, validated for effective skill acquisition in both educational and research settings. With advancements in digital technology, OpenCourseWare (OCW) has become a crucial tool for enhancing learning outcomes. Therefore, the innovative application of whiteboard animation in engineering mathematics education was explored, utilizing YouTube as a platform as a free digital learning resource. More than 300 animated teaching materials and implemented interactive mechanisms were developed to improve students’ study effectiveness and self-directed learning abilities. Pre-tests and post-tests were conducted in “Engineering Mathematics I” and “Engineering Mathematics II” to assess the educational effectiveness of whiteboard animation. The results presented significant improvements in students’ performance. The average scores of Engineering Mathematics I and II increased from 64.37 and 63.73 in the pre-test to 87.03 and 92.39 in the post-test. Whiteboard animation effectively enhanced the learning experience in engineering mathematics, improving students’ comprehension and motivation. Such results provide a reference for the development of digital education technologies in engineering. Full article

Introduction: People with disabilities are characterized by suboptimal health and lower self-rating health. Their need for health care is greater, they often have a higher prevalence of health problems and they have more difficulty accessing health care. The aim of this study was to assess the health behaviors and health indicators of 12–18-year-old young people with intellectual disabilities and autism spectrum disorder, and to explore their school-related perceptions in the Northern Great Plain region of Hungary. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional questionnaire survey was conducted with the participation of 185 young people. A custom questionnaire was used, based on the Health Behavior in School-aged Children (HBSC) survey, assessing eating habits, oral care, physical activity, mental well-being, and self-reported health status. The sample was categorized into three groups: the ID1 (Intellectual Disability level 1) group, encompassing young individuals with mild intellectual disability; the ID2 group, encompassing young people with moderate intellectual disability; and the ID+ASD group, encompassing young individuals affected by both intellectual disability and autism spectrum disorder. Results: Consumption of various food types was below optimal levels. Low intake of fruits and vegetables was common, with only 21.6% of the respondents consuming fruit daily and 23.8% consuming vegetables daily. ID1 group reported significantly higher rates of nervousness several times a week (17.8% vs. 5.6% and 6.9%, p < 0.001), sleep difficulties (28.8% vs. 7.4% and 15.5%, p = 0.032), and dizziness (9.6% vs. 1.9% and 3.4%, p = 0.022) compared to the other two groups. A third school-related factor, related to negative emotions, showed a near-significant difference (p = 0.064), suggesting that students with both autism spectrum disorder and intellectual disability perceive lower levels of acceptance from teachers. On school-free days, computer usage was significantly highest in the ID+ASD group; 50% of them used a computer for at least 4 h per day. Conclusions: To improve mental well-being among affected children, psychological support and the implementation of mental health programs are recommended. In addition to teaching stress management techniques and coping mechanisms, integrating relaxation techniques into comprehensive developmental programs—both individually and in groups—is advised. For teachers, it is recommended to acquire disability-specific communication strategies. Full article

Field surveys are an important component of architectural history courses, but they are challenging for students with limited resources or geographical constraints. This paper aims to explore the potential of virtual reality (VR) technology as a solution to this problem by testing its impact on student learning performance in an architectural history course. Dule Temple, a heritage building, is used as a case study to construct a VR environment with options for ground-based or free movement modes. A total of 102 third-year architecture students participated in the study, experiencing the VR environment and completing a survey. From the results, the VR scene’s level of detail achieved high levels of satisfaction. For learning performance, the results present the remarkable interestingness and effectiveness of VR in architectural history education. VR provides a comprehensive learning experience, enhancing the understanding of historical context, architectural styles, and spatial relationships. These findings show VR’s transformative potential as an educational medium, complementing and, in some respects, surpassing traditional approaches such as field surveys, 2D materials, and physical scale models. However, the study emphasizes that VR should not entirely replace traditional teaching methods. Instead, combining the strengths of VR and conventional techniques offers a balanced and effective strategy for architectural education. VR offers a transformative approach to address the imbalance of educational resources and realize sustainable education. Full article

Teachers’ professional learning often includes online components. This study examined how a case of 37 teachers utilized a specific online asynchronous professional learning platform designed to support teachers’ growth in learning to teach statistics and data science in secondary schools in the United States. The platform’s features and learning materials were designed based on effective online learning designs, supports for self-guided learning, and research on the teaching and learning of statistics and data science. We paid particular attention to the features we designed into the platform to support self-regulation and personalizing the experiences to meet their preferred learning goals such as allowing for free choice of learning materials, flexibility of when and how long to engage, providing personal recommendations based on user input, internal systems to track progress, and generating certificates of completion. In this study, we used a case study with both quantitative and qualitative data to examine whether teachers had gains in meeting learning goals related to their development in teaching statistics and data science, had sustained engagement, and found the features for personalization supportive for their learning. Results showed, overall, positive growth towards meeting learning goals and making small changes towards improved classroom practice. Most teachers were generally engaged in sustained ways across the study period, though we found six different patterns of completion that highlight ways in which teachers’ goal-directed and self-regulated learning occurred within the busy schedules of educators. Several personalized features, especially the recommendations and tracking system, were highly utilized and perceived as supportive of teachers’ learning. Full article

Even though classic literature has cultural and educational value in heritage education, students often have trouble becoming interested because of the archaic language, a lack of good learning materials, the idea that the literature is not relevant, and complicated plots. This research aims to enhance heritage education by identifying barriers and drivers in youth engagement with classic Thai literature and exploring how Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles could be applied to increase motivation in learning classic literature through multimedia. Ten interviews with experts, 100 on-site questionnaires filled out by students aged 15–25 years, and a multimedia e-book were used together in this mixed-methods study. As a case study, the researchers asked both experts and students to read the Thai classic poem “Phra Aphai Mani: Escaping from the Sea Witch” and make suggestions for how it could be better. The results show that there are barriers to heritage education, such as ‘the story is not connected to the present’ (mean = 4.52/5), ‘archaic vocabulary and language barriers’ (mean = 4.36/5), and ‘learning materials’ (mean = 4.25/5). Surprisingly, Thai students showed more positive attitudes towards literature courses than expected based on international trends. Key drivers for enhancing heritage education include ‘classic literature in modern, easy-to-read language’ (mean = 4.65/5), ‘including multimedia’ (mean = 4.58/5), ‘the plot/story adapted to the current era’ (mean = 4.50/5), and ‘new presenting technologies’ (mean = 4.49/5). Next, as an innovative way to improve heritage education, this study developed a free e-book titled “Phra Aphai Mani: Escaping from the Sea Witch”, which includes motion graphics and other multimedia elements. This research contributes to knowledge by demonstrating how UDL can be applied to classic literature within heritage education, enhancing understanding of student needs, and creating more effective, inclusive multimedia teaching methods for preserving and transmitting cultural heritage. Can free, adaptable, and didactically validated materials have an impact on teachers’ practices and competences? This issue has been focused on by the researchers working on the MaMa—Matematica per la scuola elementare (MaMa—Mathematics for the primary school) project, commissioned by the Dipartimento dell’educazione, della cultura e dello sport (Department of education, culture and sport) of the Canton of Ticino (Switzerland). Since 2019, this project has been aiming to create materials for teaching and learning mathematics in primary school, in line with the curriculum. The innovative MaMa materials, which can be freely downloaded via the mama.edu.ti.ch platform, are addressed to both teachers and learners. In many cases, they are editable, so that they can be customized by each user to suit the different teaching contexts and pupils’ learning needs and be grouped into collections. Via the administration and analysis of a questionnaire, this article investigates how teachers use the materials, and whether they influence teachers’ practices and competences. The results of this pilot study show that MaMa materials are perceived from teacher–users as “materials for teacher education and development”, especially at the disciplinary level, supporting both the instructional design process and the appropriation/transformation of didactical resources to deal with the challenges of differentiation in the classrooms. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a rapid shift from traditional classroom-based education to sustainable online classrooms. This has brought attention to the importance of comprehending the intricacies of students’ engagement during virtual learning. Drawing upon the concept of community of inquiry in cognitive, social, and teaching presence, a mixed-methods approach involved data collected via a structured questionnaire administered to 452 university students to identify the factors that influence students’ participation during online classes. Through the application of the CHAID (Chi-Squared Automatic Interaction Detection) decision tree algorithm, the quality of course content is identified as a cognitive predictor of students’ engagement. It is worth mentioning that a significant proportion of students, specifically 61.7%, demonstrated a considerable degree of engagement with faculty content due to its high quality. With respect to the role of social presence, possession of a designated private space boost (69.2%) and requiring students to use their webcams are found to be critical for students’ engagement. Lastly, teaching presence as a factor in enhancing students’ engagement is demonstrated by promoting interactive classrooms and providing rapid feedback to students by teachers. The findings demonstrate the importance of teachers’ quality course material, interactive classes, and the benefits of a physical environment free from distractions for optimizing students’ engagement. Background and Objectives: Neurosurgery has been underrepresented in the medical school curriculum. Advances in augmented reality and 3D printing have opened the way for early practical training through simulations. We assessed the usability of the UpSurgeOn simulation-based training model and report first experiences from a hands-on neurosurgery course for medical students. Materials and Methods: We organized a two-day microneurosurgery simulation course tailored to medical students. On day one, three neurosurgeons demonstrated anatomical explorations with the help of life-like physical simulators (BrainBox, UpSurgeOn). The surgical field was projected onto large high-definition screens by a robotic-assisted exoscope (RoboticScope, BHS Technologies). On day two, the students were equipped with microsurgical instruments to explore the surgical anatomy of the pterional, temporal and endoscopic retrosigmoid approaches. With the help of the RoboticScope, they simulated five clipping procedures using the Aneurysm BrainBox. All medical students filled out a digital Likert-scale-based questionnaire to evaluate their experiences. Results: Sixteen medical students participated in the course. No medical students had previous experience with UpSurgeOn. All participants agreed that the app helped develop anatomical orientation. They unanimously agreed that this model should be part of residency training. Fourteen out of sixteen students felt that the course solidified their decision to pursue neurosurgery. The same fourteen students rated their learning experience as totally positive, and the remaining two rated it as rather positive. Conclusions: The UpSurgeOn educational app and cadaver-free models were perceived as usable and effective tools for the hands-on neuroanatomy and neurosurgery teaching of medical students. Comparative studies may help measure the long-term benefits of UpSurgeOn-assisted teaching over conventional resources. Full article

Abstract
The smoking prevalence among vocational education and training (VET) students is high. The smoking prevalence among vocational education and training (VET) students is high. This paper describes the development and feasibility test of a multicomponent intervention designed to promote non-smoking behaviour at VET schools. We applied the Behaviour Change Wheel (BCW) stages and the capability, opportunity, and motivation for behaviour (COM-B) model to develop the intervention components based on theory, evidence, and a thorough needs-assessment study. Moreover, we feasibility-tested the preliminary ideas. All in all, our study was based on the literature, survey data, fieldwork, workshops, and expert and stakeholder involvement. The final intervention programme targets VET students’ smoking behaviour at the school, class, and individual levels through (a) a comprehensive tobacco policy to limit the physical and social opportunities to smoke, supplemented with a two-day staff course in conversations about smoking and an edutainment session (a lecture that both educates and entertains) to support a smoke-free environment; (b) classroom curricular with teaching materials to increase knowledge and social support, along with a quit-and-win competition to increase motivation; and (c) the national Quitline adapted to VET students to increase access to cessation support. The BCW model enabled a systematic and comprehensive development of an intervention, which demonstrates relevant techniques and delivery options to have the potential to reduce smoking in VET schools. Healthcare workers are under increasing pressure to use limited resources more efficiently and improve patient outcomes. Healthcare redesign, a quality improvement methodology derived from the automotive industry, is a proven means of achieving these goals. Continuing Professional Development (CPD) opportunities for nurses seeking to build their capacity for healthcare redesign often come in the form of university courses, which can be costly and prohibitively time-consuming. We developed a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) with a view to increasing the number of healthcare workers undertaking CPD in healthcare redesign and subsequently using these principles in their workplaces. The aim of the current study is to describe the development of our MOOC and its initial feedback from users. Materials and Methods: The theoretical and practical components of an existing postgraduate award course unit were made fit for purpose by being arranged into six weekly modules, before being transposed to an established learning management platform for MOOCs. Related quizzes, videos and interactive activities were then developed and included in each of these modules. Peer review of this content was completed by subject matter and teaching and learning experts prior to the MOOC being launched. Results: After running for nine months, 578 participants had enrolled in the MOOC, of whom 118 (20%) had followed through to completion. Participants were overwhelmingly from Australia (89%) and identified as female (78%). Preliminary feedback obtained from participants was positive, with 81% of respondents agreeing that they were satisfied with their experience, and 82% intending to apply their knowledge in practice. Conclusions: The MOOC has addressed a learning need by providing a brief and free form of education; learning from its development will help others seeking similar educational solutions. Initial feedback suggests the MOOC has been well-received and is likely to be translated into practice. Full article

In this study, we adopt a critical perspective on knowledge about sustainable development in Swedish free teaching materials, where certain ways of illustrating sustainable development can make invisible alternative ways to understand and delimit it. We analyse physical, free materials for school teaching, distributed by Utbudet. The materials were produced between 2008 and 2019. Our analysis shows that there is a focus on facts, certifications and technical fixes, as well as scientific and societal consensus. The companies’ perspectives are prominent in the free materials, as are anthropocentric and Western approaches. Taken together, our study shows that the free materials convey that the global situation has improved and that development is on the right track, rather than in crisis, or that the sustainability problems are complex and difficult to manage. Thus, the materials present a fairly one-sided picture of the situation and the future, which does not really agree with the aim in Swedish education of presenting a balanced view of sustainable development.
