Classical readability formulas are widely used to evaluate academic abstracts, yet the evidence on what they register is mixed, and disciplinary differences are often invoked to explain that inconsistency. This study examines within-field variation, treating forestry-related research as a set of knowledge domains and scoring 4191 English-language Web of Science abstracts from 2008 to 2019 with four classical indices. The abstracts were consistently demanding on all four indices. The most difficult domain was forest economics, policy, governance and social dimensions, with ecology and conservation being intermediate and inventory and management not being distinguishable from tree biology and silviculture. The contrasts persisted within journals, though the distributions overlapped substantially, and most variation remained within domains. With domain and covariates being controlled, no index showed a statistically distinguishable association with normalized citation impact, and the interaction tests did not establish domain heterogeneity. Domain was modestly associated with citation impact, but readability did not account for it. The indices, therefore, register systematic differences in linguistic form across knowledge domains while giving no dependable signal of scholarly uptake. For authors and editors, such scores work best as prompts for closer reading with a domain and an audience in view, not as field-wide standards or proxies for expected citation. Full article

Global restoration frameworks, such as the Bonn Challenge and Forest Landscape Restoration, have endorsed multistakeholder engagement in agroforestry as key to reversing land degradation at scale. This paper follows shifts in how stakeholders have been organised, coordinated and steered since 2010 when Rwanda’s National Forestry Policy came into force, a year ahead of Rwanda’s pledge to the Bonn Challenge. The specific focus is on Bugesera District, representing a national policy shift from focusing on restoration in highland areas only. Bugesera is a lowland area facing complex socio-ecological and livelihood challenges including high rates of deforestation, recurrent drought and rapid population fluctuations. This paper analyses these changes by investigating which stakeholders were involved, how they were engaged (modes of participation) and why they participated (drivers of participation). Conceptually, this follows stakeholder mapping, Reed’s theory of participation and multi-level governance theory. Through thematic analysis, we triangulated data from 15 policy-related documents with semi-structured interviews with representatives from 24 organisations. Our findings show that both before and after 2010, stakeholder engagement has remained top-down. However, since 2010 this has been qualified by an asymmetrical form of collaboration that increasingly takes the form of top-down deliberation. Changes were observed in participation patterns, engagement approaches, and governance arrangements, driven by contextual conditions, power relations, process design, and spatial–temporal dynamics. Within a centrally coordinated government system, shaped by the post-genocide political context and culturally embedded structures such as Umuganda and Ubudehe, multistakeholder restoration initiatives have largely remained state-led, with structured approaches to coordination and implementation that have varied in the extent of local stakeholder engagement. Trust emerged as an important factor influencing stakeholder interactions. Despite more diverse and expanded institutional arrangements over time, variations in levels of participation and influence among stakeholders persist, with differences in how engagement and decision-making power are distributed. We conclude that effective stakeholder engagement is contingent on existing governance structures, the political will to engage with a diversity of actors at different levels, contextual conditions including spatial-temporal dynamics, and opportunities provided by global and regional restoration frameworks. Sustainable agricultural development requires regional agricultural systems to balance output growth, resource efficiency, ecological protection, and long-term resilience. In mountainous and ecologically sensitive regions, identifying the development constraints and statistically derived marginal contribution thresholds of agriculture is essential for promoting green transformation and sustainable land use. Taking Yunnan Province, China, as a representative plateau mountainous agricultural region, this study uses provincial annual data from 1990 to 2023 to quantitatively identify the key drivers and threshold characteristics of agricultural development under multidimensional constraints. A multidimensional indicator system was constructed covering fiscal and investment support, agricultural production inputs, rural infrastructure, and labor and population conditions. Ridge regression was employed to address multicollinearity among explanatory variables, Bootstrap approximate inference was used to improve the robustness of coefficient estimation, and the SHAP interpretation framework was introduced to rank key driving factors and identify marginal contribution thresholds. By integrating ridge regression, Bootstrap approximate inference, SHAP-based contribution ranking, and threshold identification, the proposed framework advances prior agricultural sustainability studies by linking coefficient-based factor analysis with interpretable marginal contribution thresholds under conditions of high multicollinearity and multidimensional resource constraints. The results show that agricultural development in Yunnan is characterized by multidimensional resource and infrastructure constraints. Rural electricity consumption, total reservoir storage capacity, fixed asset investment in agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry and fisheries, local public fiscal budget expenditure, and agricultural population generally act as positive supporting factors. Rural electricity consumption is the most stable and core driver across the aggregate and three sectoral models. In contrast, pesticide and fertilizer inputs show significant negative associations in most models, suggesting that future agricultural development in Yunnan is unlikely to be sustainably supported by continued expansion of high-intensity chemical inputs. Sectoral heterogeneity is also evident: agriculture and animal husbandry are more dependent on energy, water resources, and mechanization, whereas forestry shows a more distinct operational structure. The SHAP dependence analysis identifies several statistically derived marginal contribution thresholds, including rural electricity consumption of approximately 6.055 billion kWh, total reservoir storage capacity of approximately 10.395 billion m3, total agricultural machinery power of approximately 19.8324 million kW, pesticide use of approximately 37,500 tons, and fertilizer application of approximately 1.5238 million tons. These values should be interpreted as empirical transition points in the modeled marginal contributions rather than definitive biophysical ecological limits. They indicate that the sustainability-related constraint structure of agricultural development in Yunnan is not a single output ceiling but a composite interval shaped by infrastructure support capacity, factor allocation conditions, and the declining marginal contribution of high-intensity chemical inputs. The findings provide directional quantitative evidence for sustainable agricultural governance, agricultural green transformation, and differentiated policy discussion in mountainous agricultural regions and offer reference implications for advancing SDG 2 and SDG 15 through the coordination of food-related production, resource use efficiency, and ecosystem conservation. The identified thresholds should be interpreted as model-derived marginal contribution transition points rather than operational policy cutoffs or directly enforceable ecological standards. Under strict environmental regulations and intense market competition, resource-dependent enterprises face severe survival challenges. Achieving sustainable survival through the construction of internal capabilities, particularly in the absence of long-term external subsidies, represents an urgent conundrum for forestry enterprises. Integrating relevant economic and management theories, this study aims to elucidate the mechanism by which the “viability” of forestry-related leading enterprises influences their sustainable survival. Using a sample of 179 forestry-related leading enterprises in Inner Mongolia—a typical resource-rich region in China—and based on panel data from 2021 to 2023, we constructed a viability evaluation system encompassing factor endowment, technological innovation, and entrepreneurial traits, and conducted empirical analysis using statistical models. The results indicate that: (1) Enterprise viability is the core driving force promoting sustainable survival; (2) E-commerce adoption serves as a critical bridge connecting internal capabilities with external survival performance, playing a significant mediating role; (3) The higher the degree of external openness and the stronger the regional industrial comparative advantage, the more pronounced the promoting effect of viability. Furthermore, this promoting effect is significantly stronger in regions with lower ecological constraints and higher industrial agglomeration. This study suggests that policy formulation should shift from simple financial support to the cultivation of enterprises’ endogenous capabilities. By supporting technological innovation, digital transformation, and optimizing the business environment, policies can facilitate the long-term sustainable survival of enterprises. Full article

Heilongjiang Province, as China’s principal gateway for Russian timber imports, faces structural inefficiencies in the localization of wood-processing enterprises—characterized by ecological sensitivity, resource–industry mismatches, and uneven spatial distribution. To address these challenges, this study proposes a two-stage site selection framework that integrates Geographic Information Systems (GIS) with an enhanced Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II). The model aims to reconcile ecological protection with industrial efficiency by identifying optimal facility locations that minimize environmental impact, reduce construction and logistics costs, and enhance service coverage. Using spatially resolved multi-source datasets—including forest resource distribution, transportation networks, ecological redlines, and socioeconomic indicators—the GIS-based suitability analysis (Stage I) identified 16 candidate zones. Subsequently, a multi-objective optimization model (Stage II) was applied to minimize carbon intensity and cost while maximizing service accessibility. The improved NSGA-II algorithm achieved convergence within 700 iterations, generating 124 Pareto-optimal solutions and enabling a 23.7% reduction in transport-related CO2 emissions. Beyond carbon mitigation, the model spatializes policy constraints and economic trade-offs into actionable infrastructure plans, contributing to regional sustainability goals and transboundary industrial coordination with Russia. It further demonstrates methodological generalizability for siting logistics-intensive and policy-sensitive facilities in other forestry-based economies. While the model does not yet account for temporal dynamics or agent behaviors, it provides a robust foundation for informed planning under China’s dual-carbon strategy and offers replicable insights for the global forest products supply chain. With the increasing severity of global climate change and the growing international attention being paid to carbon emission reduction, forestry carbon sinks have emerged as a key strategy for mitigating climate change and achieving carbon neutrality due to their natural and economic benefits. To identify research hotspots and development trends in forestry carbon sinks, the literature search identified a total of 958 papers from Web of Science (N = 627) and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (N = 331). CiteSpace was used to conduct a visual co-occurrence and comparative analysis of the Chinese and international literature. The results indicated a significant increase in publications on forestry carbon sinks after 2020. English-language research was more deeply embedded in environmental science and ecology, with a focus on leveraging technological innovations for precise carbon sink measurement. In contrast, Chinese-language research placed greater emphasis on policy formulation and optimization related to carbon sinks. Based on the findings, several potential future research directions were proposed to support the sustainable development of forestry carbon sinks. Full article

Forests are one of the most predominant types of land usage in Portugal and are highly relevant in terms of environmental, economic, social, and political factors. Increasing the value and the resilience of the Portuguese forest, defining adequate policies, and aligning forest research with society needs requires a truthful comprehension of the most relevant challenges in this sector. This study identifies and analyzes the most relevant needs and challenges impacting the Portuguese forestry sector, both currently and over a five-year period, from the stakeholder’s perspective. A participatory approach was employed, engaging national and regional forest stakeholders, to ensure a realistic vision of the forest sector in Portugal. A total of 116 topics were identified, with a predominance of immediate challenges over future information needs, underscoring the urgent pressures on the sector. Environmental/ecological and policy issues dominated the identified needs and challenges, reflecting the urgency for strategic interventions in these areas. A significant emphasis was placed on the mitigation of climate change impacts, mainly associated with biotic and abiotic risks, promoting technological advanced forest management, and the sector valorization. Policy and legal issues, such as fragmented ownership and adequate economic and fiscal incentives, were also identified as major concerns. The findings highlight the interconnected nature of forestry challenges and the need for integrated, multidisciplinary, and transdisciplinary approaches, prioritizing research on climate impacts, developing adaptive management strategies, promoting stakeholder engagement, and enhancing capacity-building initiatives. The results of this study make it a relevant case study for other forest stakeholders in similar regions in Europe with comparative forest management models and can inspire new solutions for common challenges opening new research avenues for other forest related academics. The overexploitation of forest resources in the Lubumbashi Charcoal Production Basin in the southeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo) leads to deforestation and miombo woodlands degradation, threatening local livelihoods. Current forestry policies are ineffective, partly due to neglecting traditional ecological knowledge (TEK). This study identifies and describes TEK and practices related to biodiversity conservation and sustainable miombo woodlands management. Focus groups and interviews were conducted in four villages (Maksem, Mwawa, Nsela, and Texas), selected based on forest resource availability and population size. Data on sacred sites, conservation practices, knowledge transmission, ceremonies, and socio-demographic factors were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Fisher’s exact test, and Jaccard’s similarity index. The findings revealed that 75% of respondents identified sacred sites where logging activities are strictly prohibited. Thirty sacred tree species were identified, with stronger compliance in villages with a high availability of forest resources. This TEK is predominantly transmitted orally through family councils, as well as traditional ceremonies or rituals. Conservation practices include small-scale farming, intercropping, avoiding tree cutting in sacred sites, and using deadwood. However, only farming and intercropping are still commonly practiced, particularly in resource-scarce villages (64%). Women and elders are primary custodians of TEK, though its application is constrained by population growth and dwindling forest resources. The findings emphasize the crucial role of TEK in strengthening forest restoration initiatives by selecting key woody species and sustainable practices, while fostering community involvement. As such, decision makers should prioritize integrating TEK into DR Congo’s forest policies to support biodiversity conservation and miombo woodlands restoration efforts. Full article

As a vital component of the terrestrial ecosystem, grassland accounts for one-third of the global vegetation system. Grassland degradation has been exacerbated due to extreme overgrazing in China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region (IMAR). While conservation was carried out via the Ecological Subsidy and Award Program (ESAP) to mitigate grassland degradation, little is known about its effectiveness in improving the biophysical conditions of grassland. This paper integrates the conceptual frameworks of total socio-environmental systems (TSESs) to assess how ecological systems respond to the ESAP, investigate the spatial heterogeneity of the ESAP, and explore the meddling effects of socio-environmental interactions on the ESAP. We integrated ecological, climate, and socioeconomic data and developed several hierarchical linear mixed models (HLMMs) to investigate how these factors interact with the ESAP in the IMAR. Our findings prove that the above-ground biomass between 2011 and 2015 responds significantly to variations in socioeconomic conditions and ecological communities. Available land resources, hospital and medical facilities, and net farmer and herdsman income are the most critical factors positively related to grassland productivity. Primary industries like mining, total consumer retail value, farming, forestry, animal husbandry, fishery productions, and GDP are the most damaging factors affecting biomass. Our study recommends a regionally or locally tailored ecological recovery policy, instead of a generalized one, in future efforts to conserve grassland. Full article

National Key Ecological Functional Areas (NKEFAs) play an important role in forestry restoration, water source conservation, soil and water conservation, windbreak and sand fixation, and biodiversity maintenance. They are the strategic core of ecosystem protection and restoration projects, not only directly related to ecological environment construction, but also profoundly affecting the sustainable development capacity of regional economy. This article selects 1256 ecologically and economically representative counties in China with complete data as research objects. Based on the data of the selected counties from 2007 to 2021, the entropy weight TOPSIS method is used to construct an economic resilience index, and a multi-period difference-in-differences (DID) model is adopted to explore the specific impact of the establishment of national key ecological functional areas on China’s economic resilience. Research has shown that national key ecological functional areas can enhance the resilience of county-level economies by promoting economic agglomeration and factor agglomeration, increasing fiscal expenditure and investment levels, and promoting sustainable development of county-level economies. The establishment of national key ecological functional areas in economically underdeveloped areas has had a positive effect on economic resilience, and the establishment of water source conservation, soil and water conservation, and biodiversity maintenance ecological functional areas has a significant impact on economic resilience. Therefore, national key ecological functional areas have generally promoted the improvement of China’s economic resilience, but in the process of policy implementation, the establishment of national key ecological functional areas should be promoted according to local conditions. This article not only provides empirical evidence for the effectiveness of China’s national key ecological function areas policies, but also provides methodological inspiration for formulating more precise and scientific ecological protection policies, which has reference significance for the implementation of similar policies in other regions around the world. Forests and forestry-related industries and ecosystem services play a critical role in the daily life of all societies, including in cultural, ecological, social, economic, and environmental aspects. Globally, there are about 4.1 billion hectares of forestland. In the United States, there are about 304 million hectares of forestland, covering about 34% of the total land area, and the forest product industry produces over USD 200 billion worth of forestry products annually. Evidence suggests these precious resources may be negatively impacted by climate change via direct and indirect processes, including wildfires, insect/pest pressure, drought, extreme storm events, increased air temperature, solar radiation, vapor pressure deficit, and other factors and variables that can be detrimental. All these can not only cause significant changes in the health and productivity of the forests, but can also cause the extinction, migration, and/or re-distribution of different tree species. Thus, humankind has the paramount responsibility to take policy, technologic, economic, environmental, and management decisions and actions to protect this vital resource for current and future generations, plants, and animals. This paper provides an overview of some of the important characteristics of forest environmental services, climate–environment–forest interactions with respect to forest health and productivity, climate change’s impacts on forest species, and the utilization of forest biomass for high-value products. Forest ecological products are closely related to ecological balance, and an in-depth understanding of the development dynamics of these products is crucial to the realization of sustainable development that integrates ecological, economic, and social benefits. Based on the Web of Science (WOS) and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) databases, this study conducted a comprehensive econometric analysis of the number of articles, journals, research institutions, author collaborations, research hotspots, and research trends of forest ecological products globally during the period of 2003–2023 with the help of CiteSpace software (Philadelphia, PA, USA). The study’s results revealed the following insights: (1) The research on forest ecological products in recent years showed a general upward trend, but the research interest in foreign countries was higher than that in China. (2) The literature within the WOS database primarily focused on the field of ecology, whereas the literature in the CNKI database predominantly emphasized the field of forestry. (3) In both databases, the Chinese Academy of Sciences was the organization with the highest number of articles. Globally, Chinese institutions had the largest proportion of articles issued. The high percentage of articles issued by specialized agricultural and forestry schools in China showed clear domain relevance. (4) In both databases, author collaborations were relatively decentralized, and no significant core group of authors had been formed. (5) The research hotspots in foreign countries focused on the ecological regulation of forest ecological products, while the research hotspots in China focused on the realization of the economic value of forest ecological products. (6) “Machine learning”, “river basin”, and “health” are the future research frontiers in foreign countries, while “ecological function” and “forest ecosystem service” are the future research frontiers in China. The results of both databases indicate that the sustainability of forest ecological products is a research trend for the coming period. Finally, the outlook for future research on forest eco-products is presented in four aspects: promoting the establishment of a unified international standard certification system for forest eco-products, developing diversified products, strengthening the function of policy support and guidance, and establishing national partnerships. Vegetation, as a comprehensive ecological indicator of environmental change, plays an essential role in terrestrial ecosystems. Dramatic climate change and increasing anthropogenic disturbances have led to a profound change in vegetation cover. This study employed Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and other relevant data in Southwest China mountains, using Chongqing as a case study, to explore the variation in Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and its spatial differentiation mechanisms, quantify the relative contributions of climate change and human activities to these variations, and assess the effects of ecological policies, including afforestation, mountain closure forestry and natural forest conservation, and agricultural improvement. Results showed that the spatial distribution of annual NDVI, on average, varied 0.109 to 0.929, with the rate varying from −0.033 to 0.017 yr−1. NDVI was improved in 83.4% areas of Chongqing, and human activities contributed 69.1% of revegetation, whereas climate contributed 30.9%. On the other hand, human activities and climate change contributed 76.3% and 23.7% to vegetation degradation in 17.6% areas, respectively. Moreover, the explanatory power of anthropogenic factors on spatial differentiation of NDVI were stronger than that of climatic factors, and land use type was the dominant factor. The cumulative afforestation area, effective irrigation rate, fertilizer application, and total agricultural machinery power of the whole city was extremely significantly correlated with NDVI (p < 0.01), and the vegetation cover fluctuation in the region affected by natural forest protection and mountain closure forestry project was much more stable than that in non-protected areas, which to a certain extent reflected the effective implementation of local ecological protection, agricultural improvement, and other related policies. Indonesia is the largest archipelagic country in the world, with 17,000 islands of varying sizes and elevations, from lowlands to very high mountains, stretching more than 5000 km eastward from Sabang in Aceh to Merauke in Papua. Although occupying only 1.3% of the world’s land area, Indonesia possesses the third-largest rainforest and the second-highest level of biodiversity, with very high species diversity and endemism. However, during the last two decades, Indonesia has been known as a country with a high level of deforestation, a producer of smoke from burning forests and land, and a producer of carbon emissions. The aim of this paper is to review the environmental history and the long process of Indonesian forest management towards achieving environmental sustainability and community welfare. To do this, we analyze the milestones of Indonesian forest management history, present and future challenges, and provide strategic recommendations toward a viable Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) system. Our review showed that the history of forestry management in Indonesia has evolved through a long process, especially related to contestation over the control of natural resources and supporting policies and regulations. During the process, many efforts have been applied to reduce the deforestation rate, such as a moratorium on permitting primary natural forest and peat land, land rehabilitation and soil conservation, environmental protection, and other significant regulations. Therefore, these efforts should be maintained and improved continuously in the future due to their significant positive impacts on a variety of forest areas toward the achievement of viable SFM. Finally, we conclude that the Indonesian government has struggled to formulate sustainable forest management policies that balance economic, ecological, and social needs, among others, through developing and implementing social forestry instruments, developing and implementing human resource capacity, increasing community literacy, strengthening forest governance by eliminating ambiguity and overlapping regulations, simplification of bureaucracy, revitalization of traditional wisdom, and fair law enforcement. Dynamic Assessment and Change Analysis of Ecosystem Service Value Based on Physical Assessment Method in Cili County, China

The effective implementation of ecological protection policies requires the adequate assessment of temporal and spatial changes in the environment. To understand how ecosystem services can be used to track environmental changes, we carried out a study which focused on assessing the changes in the ecosystem services over time and space in Cili County, which is an important forestry region. The method we used was to evaluate the value of the regional ecological services based on the method for evaluating the value equivalent factor per unit area; then, by introducing multi-source data, the InVEST model was optimized to accurately assess the function of the regional ecosystem services, such as carbon storage, soil conservation, and water production. In addition, the values of the ecosystem services and the function assessment results were compared. Finally, based on the results of the optimized InVEST model, the value of the ecosystem services in the study area was regulated and re-evaluated. After re-evaluation, the total value of the ecosystem services in Cili county between 2000 and 2020 still showed an upward trend, increasing from CNY 26.136 billion to CNY 35.444 billion, with a total increase of CNY 9.308 billion. Compared to before the re-evaluation, the total value of the ecosystem services only increased from CNY 32.243 billion to CNY 32.473 billion, with a total increase of CNY 0.23 billion; the change in the value of the ecosystem services was more obvious, with a stronger spatial heterogeneity. The areas with high ecosystem service value in Cili County are mainly concentrated in the eastern parts, as well as the northwestern and southern parts, while the areas with low value are mainly concentrated in the central part of Cili County. The value of the central, southern, and northwestern parts of Cili County increased significantly. Such changes are closely related to China’s implementation of ecological protection policies in this region since 2000, such as returning farmland to forest and natural forest protection. The evaluation results of the ecosystem services and the method for evaluating the value equivalent factor in this study are more consistent with the changes in the ecosystem services in the study area. The dynamic assessment method of ecosystem service value proposed in this study is helpful in achieving accurate assessments of the regional ecosystem services and thus provides a useful reference for the formulation of more reasonable regional ecological protection policies.
