The Yasuní National Park in Ecuador’s Amazon, one of Earth’s most biodiverse regions, faces unprecedented threats from oil extraction and increasing risks to Kichwa communities. This paper provides a baseline analysis of off-the-grid hydrocarbon extraction affecting ecosystems and communities living within Oil Blocks 12 and 43. Our aim is to integrate analysis of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) to better understand the impacts of oil-extractive contamination at off-the-grid sites in sensitive Amazonian ecosystems. To achieve that, we center the Yasuní Park and Kichwa communities as a case study. Despite Kichwa environmental concerns about contamination, conventional total hydrocarbon testing has failed to detect elevated levels due to hydrocarbon degradation, necessitating testing for other contaminants associated with extractive activities, such as PFAS, a forever chemical commonly used in drilling fluids, and other contaminants from petroleum transportation via pipelines. This research was conducted at the request of and with the participation of Kichwa residents, who needed to understand the nature of contaminants in their environment. Two participatory mapping exercises were conducted in Oil Block 12 to pinpoint 16 sampling locations, given the block’s long history of contamination. In Oil Block 43, where extraction is more recent, we sampled 5 sites where community members had observed contamination in the last year. TPH and PFAS analyses were performed using EPA methods 1633 and 1664. Results revealed 7 PFAS compounds across Oil Blocks, 11 TPH compounds in Oil Block 12, and overlap between TPH and PFAS at 6 sampling locations. Contamination was detected near community housing, food gardens, and swamped forest, which is concerning because communities rely on traditional subsistence activities, including forest gathering, fishing, and gardens for survival. This is the first environmental assessment to examine the combined presence of hydrocarbons and PFAS in the Yasuní Park and the Ecuadorian Amazon, providing communities with empirical evidence of environmental contamination. Introduction: Inland fisheries in their diverse forms are an important activity in Portugal, currently involving about 100,000 fishers. Despite their relevance, there is still limited knowledge regarding the economic multiplier effect associated with this activity, including its contribution to local and regional economies, its broader socio-economic impacts, and its role in promoting nature-based tourism. Objective: The INFISHERIES.PT project aims to characterize the socio-economic value of inland fisheries in Portugal. Methodology: The three main fishing activities in Portugal (professional, sport, and recreational fisheries) were considered to assess inland fisheries’ economic value. Data on annual expenditures of competitive sport anglers were collected through an online questionnaire distributed by the Portuguese Federation of Sport Fishing, while data on recreational fishers were obtained through face-to-face surveys. The analysis of professional fisheries was based on official catch declarations submitted to the national licensing authority (ICNF) between 2012 and 2024. Interim Results: Results for sport fisheries indicate an estimated mean annual direct expenditure of €6.7 million, with fishing equipment accounting for the largest share, followed by travel, meals, and accommodation. Social interaction was identified as the main motivation for recreational fishing, followed by contact with nature, as well as motivations related to peace, relaxation, and entertainment. Respondents most frequently reported annual expenditures between €100 and €499 on fishing equipment, travel, and food during fishing trips. Regarding professional fisheries, results highlight the increasing importance of non-native species in total catches, particularly the red swamp crayfish, in recent years. Native migratory species, such as the European eel, sea lamprey, and allis shad, despite lower catch volumes, maintain high market value and make a significant contribution to total revenue. Conclusions: The results obtained to date in this project indicate that freshwater fishing in Portugal is a relevant activity, both in its commercial and non-commercial forms, and plays an important economic role at local and regional levels. Moreover, sport and recreational angling, in particular, also serve as drivers of nature-based tourism, potentially contributing to increased environmental awareness among the population and pressuring authorities to maintain freshwater ecosystems in good ecological condition. The study examined the relationship between food swamps and self-reported food shopping frequency and perceived food access, while considering transportation mode and travel time. This Community-Based Participatory Research study surveyed residents from six neighborhoods in Hartford. Individual-level food swamp exposure (the ratio of unhealthy to healthy food stores within a 0.5-mile radius of participants’ homes) was measured both objectively (using GIS-based methods) and subjectively (through self-reporting). Poisson regression models assessed the associations between food swamps and outcomes (shopping frequency by store types and perceived access to food), with transportation mode and travel time as moderators. Of 304 participants, 51% lived in subjective (n = 153) and 71% in objective (n = 198) food swamps. Food swamp exposure was associated with greater shopping frequency at unhealthy outlets (β = 0.12, p < 0.001), less access to healthier food (β = −0.13, p < 0.001), and increased access to unhealthy food (β = 0.08, p < 0.001). Transportation significantly moderates these relationships; bus riders reported the highest rates of unhealthy food purchasing (β = 0.17, p < 0.001). Longer travel times increased both healthy and unhealthy food access (β = 0.01, p < 0.001 for each). Food swamps interact with public transportation to contribute to food shopping and access, underscoring the need for integrated food and transportation policies to address structural barriers and promote health equity in underserved urban communities. The community food environment, which encompasses residential and school neighborhoods, is an important determinant of overweight in children and adolescents. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the co-occurrence of food swamps in residential and school environments and overweight status. This cross-sectional study included 2601 children and adolescents (aged 5–14 years) from 47 schools in a medium-sized municipality in Brazil. The outcome was overweight status, defined as body mass index for age exceeding the mean by at least one z-score. Food swamps in residential and school surroundings were defined as buffers of 250 m with four or more establishments selling ultra-processed foods. The prevalence of being overweight was 30.4%. Food swamps were present in 22.5% and 22% of the residential and school areas, respectively, and 16.2% of the participants were exposed to food swamps in both residential and school environments. Children and adolescents simultaneously exposed to food swamps in both residential and school areas had a higher likelihood of being overweight (odds ratio: 1.22; 95% confidence interval: 1.02–1.45). The simultaneous presence of food swamps in residential and school environments is associated with overweight in children and adolescents. Full article

A significant segment of the inhabitants in Mexico have a high rate of malnutrition and obesity, especially in impoverished and segregated areas. This study analyzes the paradox of food swamps, food availability, and food’s ecological footprint to promote the creation of community gardens in Querétaro. This paper is segmented into four sections. It starts by recording the omnipresence of the Mexican chain “OXXO” convenience stores, which offer mainly processed foods. The second segment of the research depicts the miles traveled by Mexican crops to visualize their carbon footprint. The third portion explores the impact of urban agriculture in the 20th century on cities. The final section proposes designing and implementing community gardens in two marginalized neighborhoods (Tlacote and San Antonio–Bolaños) in Querétaro, Mexico, to foster healthier, more sustainable neighborhoods. The findings corroborate a soaring number of unhealthy food stores, elevated carbon footprints related to food production, and a community request for urban agriculture, including the regeneration of community public areas. The research emphasizes the impact of landscape urbanism, especially community gardens, to foster social, urban, and environmental regeneration. The study provides a scheme for advocating healthier lifestyles and more sustainable urban environments by focusing on food distribution, ecological services, and community engagement. Full article

Effects of Forest Swamp Succession and Soil Depth on Distribution Pattern of Soil Nematode Communities

The forest swamp ecosystem, as a special wetland ecosystem, is a key link in the material cycle and an important carbon sink in the carbon cycle. The global carbon cycle is of great significance, but the impact of forest swamp succession and soil depth on soil active organic matter and nematode community structure and diversity is unclear. This study used the “space instead of time” method to investigate the succession process of forest swamps from grasslands (WC) and shrubs (WG) to forests (WS) in national nature reserves. The results showed that during the forest succession process, the dominant nematode communities in the WC and WG stages were dominated by the genera Apis and Labroidei, while the dominant genera increased in the WS stage. The total abundance of nematodes increased, and the number of groups was ordered WG > WC > WS. The diversity in soil nematode communities according to Shannon–Wiener (H′), Pielou (J), and Trophic diversity (TD) was WS > WG > WC, which is related to vegetation, soil physical and chemical properties, and microbial community structure. The maturity index (MI) was WG > WS > WC. The soil food web was dominated by bacterial channels and had characteristics in forest metabolic activity and regulation ability. At different soil depths, there were significant differences in the community, with species such as the spiny cushioned blade genus being key. The number and group size of nematodes varied from 0–10 cm > 10–20 cm > 20–30 cm. The relative abundance of feeding nematodes changed with depth, while diversity indices such as H′, J, and TD decreased with depth. Ecological function indices such as MI and PPI showed depth variation patterns, while basic indices (BI) and channel indices (CI) showed significant differences. In terms of soil variables, during the forest succession stage, soil organic carbon (SOC), soluble organic nitrogen (DON), easily oxidizable organic carbon (ROC), microbial biomass carbon (MBC), and microbial biomass nitrogen (MBN) showed a gradually increasing trend with WC-WG-WS, while total nitrogen (TN), soluble organic carbon (DOC), soil temperature (ST), and soil moisture (SM) showed opposite changes. There were significant differences in soil ST, SM, and DON values with succession (p < 0.05). At different soil depths, except for DON and ROC, which increased first and then decrease with depth, the values of other physical and chemical factors and active carbon and nitrogen components at depths of 0–10 cm were higher than those at other depths and decreased with depth. An analysis of variance showed significant differences in MBC and MBN values at different soil depths (p < 0.05), which is of great significance for a deeper understanding of the mechanism of soil nematode community construction and its relationship with the environment. Balancing the accuracy and the complexity of models is a well established and ongoing challenge. Models can be misleading if they are not accurate, but models may be incomprehensible if their accuracy depends upon their being complex. In this paper, semilattices are examined as an option for balancing the accuracy and the complexity of machine learning models. This is done with a type of machine learning that is based on semilattices: algebraic machine learning. Unlike trees, semilattices can include connections between elements that are in different hierarchies. Trees are a subclass of semilattices. Hence, semilattices have higher expressive potential than trees. The explanation provided here encompasses diagrammatic semilattices, algebraic semilattices, and interrelationships between them. Machine learning based on semilattices is explained with the practical example of urban food access landscapes, comprising food deserts, food oases, and food swamps. This explanation describes how to formulate an algebraic machine learning model. Overall, it is argued that semilattices are better for balancing the accuracy and complexity of models than trees, and it is explained how algebraic semilattices can be the basis for machine learning models. The red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) was introduced from Japan to China in the 1920s. Crayfish are now widely distributed in almost all types of freshwater wetlands, including rice fields, ditches, swamps, lakes, and ponds in most provinces of China, owing to their multi-directional movement, rapid growth, adaptability to the environment, and relatively high fecundity. The delectable taste and high nutritional value of crayfish have made them popular among consumers, leading to the significant development of red swamp crayfish farming in the last two decades. Currently, it represents the largest proportion of commercially farmed freshwater crustaceans in China and has become an integral component of China’s aquatic economy. Crayfish are highly valued for their edibility and for their by-products, which have various important uses. This review discusses nutrient composition, active ingredients, safety evaluation, processing and preservation, and comprehensive utilization of crayfish by-products to explore and organize the existing knowledge about crayfish and to promote the growth of the crayfish industry. This comprehensive review aims to provide a basis for the optimal utilization and sustainable development of crayfish resources worldwide. Full article

Rice cultivation is one of the most important agro-economic activities in many countries, and the correct seed storage between production cycles is essential for crop success. In Guinea-Bissau, mangrove swamp rice (MSR) is a highly productive rice cropping system, thus providing surplus for sale. Depending on storage conditions, rice grains may present moisture, insects, or the development of fungi that might affect crop productivity. Considering different rice varieties and storage conditions, samples were collected from 30 farmers within 13 villages across the main MSR-producing regions. Stored rice was used to isolate and identify seed-borne fungi through DNA barcoding, to test aflatoxin content, and to evaluate seed germination rates. Polyethylene bags (the container), raised wooden platforms, and storage rooms (the structures) are the most used facilities. Hermetic containers were recorded mainly in Oio. A total fungal richness of 18 genera was found, and 16 different species were identified. The most represented fungal genera are Aspergillus, Curvularia, and Bipolaris. Despite the presence of aflatoxin-producing fungal samples, they did not present concerning levels for human consumption, and the germination rate was not affected regardless of storage structures. These results provide a baseline on fungi occurrence in stored MSR seeds from traditional facilities in Guinea-Bissau. Full article

Despite the numerous food studies conducted in Detroit, none have assessed changes in the food landscape over a decade. No previous study has systematically analyzed food store closures in the city either. We will address these oversights by examining the distribution of food outlets in the city ten years apart. This paper probes the following questions: (1) How has the distribution of Detroit’s food outlets changed in the decade between 2013 and 2023? (2) Does Detroit fit the definition of a food desert in 2013 or 2023? (3) Does Detroit fit the definition of a food swamp in 2013 or 2023? (4) Has supermarket redlining occurred in Detroit in 2013 or 2023? (5) How is population decline related to food outlet distribution? (6) How do food store closures impact food store distribution? We conducted exhaustive searches to collect information on thousands of food outlets from Data Axle, Google, and Bing. The data were analyzed and mapped in SPSS 28 and ArcGIS 10.8. We compared 3499 food outlets identified in 2013 with 2884 identified in 2023. We expanded our search for food outlets in 2023 and found an additional 611 food outlets in categories not studied in 2013. The study’s findings are significant as they unearth evidence of extensive population decline—driven by Black flight—and a vanishing food infrastructure. Detroit lost more than 600 food outlets between 2013 and 2023, a staggering number that underscores the severity of the issue. Moreover, in 2023, we documented food store closures and found 1305 non-operational or closed food outlets in the city. Regardless of the neighborhood’s racial composition, the household median income, or the educational attainment of residents, food store closures were widespread in 2023; 27.3% of the food outlets identified that year were defunct. Despite the massive food store closures, Detroit did not fit the description of a food desert; each of the city’s 54 neighborhoods had between 7 and 300 food outlets. The food swamp thesis did not accurately describe the city either, as supermarkets/large grocery stores were intermingled with convenience and corner stores in both study periods. The data did not find evidence of supermarket redlining, as supermarkets/large grocery stores were found in formerly redlined neighborhoods alongside dollar stores and variety stores in both study periods. Spatial mapping of food demand is essential for understanding and addressing disparities in food accessibility, which significantly impact public health and nutrition. This research presents an innovative geospatial framework designed to map food demand, integrating individual dietary behaviors with advanced spatial analysis techniques. This study analyzes the spatial distribution of eating habits across Lithuania using a geospatial approach. The methodology involves dividing Lithuania into 60,000 points and interpolating survey data with Shepard’s operator, which relies on a weighted average of values at data points. This flexible approach allows for adjusting the number of points based on spatial resolution and sample size, enhancing the reliability and applicability of the generated maps. The procedure includes generating a structured grid system, incorporating measurements into the grid, and applying Shepard’s operator for interpolation, resulting in precise representations of food demand. This framework provides a comprehensive understanding of dietary behaviors, informing targeted policy interventions to improve food accessibility and nutrition. Traditional food spatial mapping approaches are often limited to specific polygons and lack the flexibility to achieve high granular detail. By applying advanced interpolation techniques and ensuring respondent location data without breaching privacy concerns, this study creates high-resolution maps that accurately represent regional differences in eating habits. The methodology’s flexibility allows for adjustments in spatial resolution and sample size, enhancing the maps’ validity and applicability. This novel approach facilitates the creation of detailed food demand maps at any granular level, providing valuable insights for policymakers and stakeholders. These insights enable the development of targeted strategies to improve food accessibility and nutrition. Additionally, the obtained information can be used for computer simulations to further analyze and predict food demand scenarios. By leveraging spatial data integration, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of the complex dynamics of food demand, identifying critical areas such as food deserts and swamps, and paving the way for more effective public health interventions and policies aimed at achieving equitable food distribution and better nutritional outcomes. Objective. Diet-related disease is rising, disproportionately affecting minority communities in which small food retail stores swamp supermarkets. Barriers to healthy food access were exacerbated by the pandemic. We examined the following: (1) individual- and household-level factors in a sample of Baltimore community members who regularly shop at corner stores and (2) how these factors are associated with indicators of dietary quality. Design. Cross-sectional data were collected using an online survey to capture sociodemographics, anthropometrics, and food sourcing, spending, and consumption patterns. Concurrent quantitative and qualitative analyses were conducted in Stata 18 and ATLAS.ti. Setting. This study was set in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. Participants. The participants included adults (n = 127) living or working in Baltimore who identified as regular customers of their neighborhood corner store. Results. The respondents were majority Black and low-income, with a high prevalence of food insecurity (62.2%) and overweight/obesity (66.9%). Most (82.76%) shopped in their neighborhood corner store weekly. One-third (33.4%) of beverage calories were attributed to sugar-sweetened beverages, and few met the recommended servings for fruits and vegetables or fiber (27.2% and 10.4%, respectively). Being Black and not owning a home were associated with lower beverage and fiber intake, and not owning a home was also associated with lower fruit and vegetable intake. Food insecurity was associated with higher beverage intake, while WIC enrollment was associated with higher fruit and vegetable and fiber intakes. Open-ended responses contextualized post-pandemic food sourcing and consumption in this setting. Conclusions. This paper helps characterize the consumers of a complex urban food system. The findings will inform future strategies for consumer-engaged improvement of local food environments. Full article

Nutrition is a vital factor that exerts a profound and direct impact on health. Food environments significantly influence individuals’ dietary behaviors, health outcomes, and overall food security. Individuals in food deserts and food swamps do not have access to healthier food options. And in both cases, the emphasis is primarily on the physical configuration of the environment as it relates to food availability. This quasi-experimental study aims to investigate the impact of two different food environments (defined to include a social component) on food choices. A total of 246 participants were surveyed by telephone, half of whom were primed with Scenario A (a food environment deficient in healthy options and cues that support and reinforce healthier choices) and half were primed with Scenario B (an environment with an abundance of healthy food options and cues that support and reinforce healthy eating). Ordered logit regression was used for analysis. The results show significant differences in likely food consumption between the groups. Individuals in Scenario B were found to be 4.48 times more likely to consume fruits and vegetables. In addition, it was determined that being a woman increases the probability of consuming more fruits and vegetables by 0.92 times (1/0.52–1), and adherence to a healthy diet increases by 3.64 times. Age and race were not significant predictors. This study highlights the crucial role of environmental factors in shaping dietary habits and underscores the importance of the social components of the food environment in promoting the adoption of healthier dietary habits. Based on these findings, policymakers should prioritize developing strategies that go beyond providing physical access and consider social aspects of the environment in promoting healthy eating habits to improve public health and bolster the food security of communities. Peatlands play an important role in the global environment and the well-being of humans by providing valuable ecosystem services. Yet, anthropogenic activities pose significant hazards for peatland management, including low levels of community participation due to lack of awareness and financial incentives. Understanding the social–cultural and economic value of these ecosystems will raise awareness to protect these important ecosystems. Here, we estimated a total economic value (TEV) of peatland ecosystem services and examined relationships between the TEV and landscape characteristics in Riau province, Indonesia. A questionnaire was used to investigate household socioeconomics, perception of peatland importance, peatland product collection, and willingness to pay for habitat and biodiversity protection from May to June 2023. A total of 200 household individuals (92% confidence) in five villages across distinct landscapes in the Sungai Kiyap-Sungai Kampar Kiri Peatland Hydrological Unit participated in the survey. The respondents obtained numerous advantages from the peatlands with an estimated TEV of USD 3174 per household per year (about 1.3 times their annual income). Approximately 81% showed a use value, especially food provisioning from fish and soil fertility. To a lesser extent, non-use values included a habitat for endemic and endangered species, biodiversity conservation for future generations, and community bonds with sacred forests. The landscape characteristics, illustrating habitat types, biophysical conditions, and property rights regimes, interplay with the relative benefits derived from the peatlands. Proximity to secondary peat swamp forests and riparian zones, especially within protected areas, enhanced economic value. Protected area co-management is essential to balance peatland conservation with sustainable livelihoods. Primary forests need restrictive protection. Meanwhile, buffer zone designation and agroforestry practices, especially in the peatland–farm interface, reduce land use tensions and promote local stewardship. This study can be used as a reference by planners and policymakers to recognize factors that promote effective peatland management, especially those that balance ecosystem protection and livelihood maintenance. Mangrove swamp rice production (MSRP) refers to rice cultivation in former mangrove soils that have been anthropogenically modified for food production. The method utilizes the largest possible storage of fresh water to desalinate the soils and make them productive. However, temporal variability in rainfall patterns causes loss of efficiency in production, impacting crop growth and reducing productivity. To improve MSRP, it is necessary to identify the primary constraints associated with salinity, enhancing and maximizing freshwater storage efficiency and water productivity. This study provides a general description of the MSRP system in both the northern and southern regions of Guinea-Bissau, aiming at the identification of the main water management limitations. The description involves the use of typologies and the identification of zones with specific characteristics within the paddies. Furthermore, this review includes an analysis of the physicochemical characteristics of soils in relation to salinity issues, descriptions of agronomic management, rice varieties, and the significance of managing dikes and bunds to improve mangrove swamp rice water management. This study shows how the MSRPS is characterized by dynamism and complexity, involving a wide range of constraints associated with salinity features, cultural influences, and microclimatic conditions that are subject to temporal variations.
