Background: Adopting novel feed ingredients and aligning feeding strategies with these formulations are key to improving aquaculture sustainability. This study assessed the combined effects of alternative protein and lipid sources and feeding regime on growth, nutrient utilization, and body composition of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) juveniles. Methods: Two isoenergetic and identical digestible protein diets (39%) were formulated: a control (conventional fishmeal/fish oil (FM/FO) and plant proteins, containing 20% FM and 6% FO) and an alternative diet replacing 50% of FM and 25% of vegetable proteins with a blend of poultry by-products, insect meal, and single-cell protein (Corynebacterium glutamicum) and totally replacing fish oil with alternative lipid sources (microalgae and by-product oils). Fish (28 g of initial body weight) were fed for 210 days either to apparent satiety (AS) or under moderate restriction (85% and 65% of AS). The number of fish used was 65 fish per 500 L tank (triplicate for each experimental group). Growth performance, feed conversion, nutrient efficiency ratios, protein retention, and proximate and fatty acid composition were measured. Results: The alternative diet significantly improved growth, feed and nutrient efficiency, and protein retention compared with the control. Whole-body fatty acid profiles of fish fed the alternative diet showed higher contents of nutritionally important fatty acids, including DHA. Restricted feeding at 65% of AS enhanced nutrient efficiency ratios and protein retention relative to 85% and AS, but reduced growth. Feeding to AS produced the highest feed intake and growth but poorer feed conversion and nutrient efficiency. No significant interaction between diet and feeding strategy was observed. Conclusions: Incorporating novel protein and lipid sources can improve sea bass performance and product nutritional value while supporting sustainability. Feeding at ~85% of AS may offer a practical compromise between growth and efficient nutrient utilization. Full article

Background: Caffeine, dairy products and other food items may influence retinal microcirculation. Retinal microvascular indices provide quantitative biomarkers of systemic microvascular health and are increasingly used in clinical and research settings. The aim of this study was to elucidate the possible effects of these food products on structural and functional indices of the retinal microcirculation. Methods: Based on a registered protocol, we identified eligible interventional/observational studies examining the association of these factors with retinal biomarkers, including central retinal artery equivalent (CRAE), central retinal vein equivalent (CRVE), arteriolar-to-venular diameter ratio (AVR), retinal vascular tortuosity, vessel diameter index (VDI) and retinal vessel flicker light-induced dilation (FID). Results: Fourteen studies were included addressing caffeine (4), dairy products (2) and other food (9) consumption. Acutely, caffeine intake was dose-dependently associated with narrowed CRAE, CRVE, decreased VDI and increased AVR and FID. Long-term, caffeine consumption was associated with larger CRVE and lower AVR, while decaffeinated coffee with larger CRAE and AVR and narrower CRVE. Low-fat dairy products, fish and fiber were associated with larger CRAE, smaller CRVE, and increased AVR, while red meat consumption was associated with narrower CRAE and lower AVR. Increased salt intake was associated with increased venular tortuosity, while almond consumption was associated with larger CRVE. Owing to substantial study heterogeneity, a meta-analysis was not feasible. Conclusions: Potentially clinically meaningful associations between food groups and retinal indices were identified. These associations should be considered when evaluating retinal microcirculation and assessing CVD risk since modification of these factors may be beneficial for the cardiovascular system. The global demand for fish oil (FO) is increasing while its supply is decreasing, which has limited its use in aquafeeds. Research on alternative terrestrial oils (TOs) for commonly cultured fish species in Bangladesh is limited. This research involved a 70-day feeding experiment to assess the effectiveness of replacing FO with TOs in the diet of Gangetic catfish (Mystus cavasius). Five diets were formulated: a control diet (D1) with fish meal and FO, and four diets replacing FO with soybean oil (D2), black soldier fly larvae oil (D3), palm oil (D4), or a mixed oil combination (D5) of 50% black soldier fly larvae oil, 25% soybean oil, and 25% palm oil. A total of 675 fish (0.5 g each) were distributed in 15 100 L aquariums (45 fish/aquarium) and fed to satiation twice daily. Fish fed with Diet D5 showed significantly higher growth, followed by those fed with D3, D4, and D1, while D2 resulted in significantly lower growth. Fish on the D5 diet consumed the most feed, followed by those on the D3 and D2 diets, with similar feed intake levels for those on the D1 and D4 diets. FCR, FCE, and PER were not significantly affected by dietary oil sources. Whole-body lipid content (p < 0.05) was significantly lower in the D3 group and higher in the D2 group, while other groups showed intermediate values. The fatty acid composition in the fish reflected their diets: significantly higher n-3 LC-PUFA (EPA + DHA) content was observed in the D1 group, followed by the D4 and D3 groups, and fish fed with D2 and D5 showed significantly lower values. Alpha-linolenic acid C18:3n-3) was significantly higher in the D2 group, followed by the D3, D1, and D4 groups, with the D5 group having a significantly lower value. Total MUFA was significantly higher in D4, followed by D1, D5, and D3; the D2-fed group showed a significantly lower value. Lauric acid (C12:0) was significantly higher in D3, followed by D5; other groups showed significantly lower values. Feed physical properties were significantly influenced by oil type, with water stability, pellet durability, and palatability being significantly highest in the D2 and D5 diets, followed by D3 and D4, with D1 being the lowest. Fish on the D1 and D5 diets had a significantly higher condition factor (CF) compared to fish on the D2 diet. Considering the growth and overall performance in the current study, we concluded that under the current dietary composition, TOs can effectively replace FO in the diets of Gangetic catfish, with mixed oils, black soldier fly larvae oil, and palm oil being the most promising alternatives. Fish passage through turbines is one of the main environmental impacts of hydropower. Turbine type is a key factor influencing fish survival, and widespread Kaplan turbines are generally considered less dangerous than other turbine types. Nevertheless, while large Kaplan turbines have been extensively studied, there is limited empirical evidence about the biological impact of small, high-speed Kaplan turbines on fish survival. In this study, we conducted controlled in situ fish experiments at a small and low-head hydropower plant (1 MW; head 8 m) using balloon tags and pressure sensors to quantify real mortality in two horizontal Kaplan turbines operating at full capacity: one small turbine (1.2 m Ø, 500 rpm, and 5 m3/s) and one larger unit (1.55 m Ø, 300 rpm, and 8 m3/s). Fish (95–190 mm) were released into the intake flow and monitored post-passage. Results showed higher mortality in the small turbine, with ~80% in 24 h, many exhibiting severe mechanical injuries such as complete sectioning of the head or spinal cord, with significantly higher mortality in larger fish. In contrast, the larger turbine showed a ~60% mortality rate and fewer traumatic injuries. Our findings highlight the underestimated impact of small, high-rpm Kaplan turbines on fish survival and underscore the need for adaptive turbine operation or structural modifications to minimize ecological damage during critical migration periods. Micro-minerals are essential for fish, but traditional inorganic micro-minerals (IMM) have low bioavailability. This study evaluated coated inorganic micro-minerals (CIMM) in juvenile American eels under commercial recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) conditions. Three experimental groups (n = 3 tanks per group, stocking density: 138 fish/m3) were fed basal diets supplemented for 56 days with: 1000 mg/kg IMM (IMM group, providing Cu 7, Fe 200, Mn 30, Zn 70, I 1.6, Se 0.4, and Co 1.2 mg/kg diet), 1000 mg/kg CIMM (CIMM group I), or 500 mg/kg CIMM (CIMM group II). Compared to the IMM group, the CIMM group I demonstrated significantly enhanced growth performance, with the specific growth rate increasing by approximately 31.14%, higher whole-body content and retention of minerals (Ca, P, Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn), and superior intestinal health, as reflected by significantly increased activities of digestive enzymes (amylase and lipase), enhanced antioxidant capacity (elevated SOD and CAT, reduced MDA), and improved morphology (villi length and muscular thickness), an altered intestinal microbiota (increased relative abundance of Firmicutes and reduced relative abundance of Proteobacteria), and significant metabolomic alterations in purine metabolism and linoleic acid metabolism. The CIMM group II maintained growth performance, with no significant difference in WGR and SGR compared to the IMM group, while still showing significant improvements in feed intake and mineral retention (P, Cu, Fe, Zn), and antioxidant capacity. Collectively, this study not only confirms the efficacy of CIMM in commercial RAS but also reveals that the supplementation level previously shown to be effective in the laboratory (50% CIMM) is insufficient under commercial farming conditions, implying that the dietary micro-mineral requirements for juvenile American eels in commercial RAS may be higher than those established in laboratory settings. This study evaluated the effects of water renewal rate and temperature on the growth performance and physiological responses of juvenile Piaractus brachypomus reared in a recirculating aquaculture system (RAS). A total of 336 fish (1.35 ± 0.24 g) were distributed in six RAS units under two water renewal rates (42 and 128 L h−1) and three temperatures (26, 29, and 32 °C) for 45 days. Temperature was the main factor affecting growth, with higher final weight and total length at 29 and 32 °C throughout the experimental period. Water renewal rate significantly influenced feeding efficiency and energy allocation. Higher renewal (128 L h−1) increased dissolved oxygen and daily feed intake and resulted in higher hemoglobin levels and hepatic lipid deposition, particularly at 32 °C, indicating greater metabolic activity. Conversely, the lower renewal rate (42 L h−1) was associated with better feed conversion ratios at 29 °C and higher muscle lipid content at 26 °C, suggesting reduced energy expenditure. Hematocrit, total plasma protein, and cholesterol were primarily influenced by temperature, with higher values at 29 and 32 °C, while glucose, triglycerides, and liver enzymes were unaffected. Overall, temperatures of 29–32 °C optimized growth, while water renewal rate modulated feed utilization, physiological responses, and lipid deposition. These findings highlight the importance of jointly optimizing temperature and water renewal rate in RAS to enhance growth performance and metabolic balance in juvenile P. brachypomus. Full article

Parental perceptions of healthy eating often diverge from children’s actual diets, but this gap is poorly documented in Central Asia. We examined how parents’ priorities for key food groups relate to nutrient intakes in 390 urban children aged 1–6 years in Central Kazakhstan. In a cross-sectional study, parents completed a 24 h multiple-pass dietary recall and rated the importance of fats and sweets, meat and fish, dairy, vegetables and fruits, and bread and potatoes on 5-point scales. Nutrient intakes were calculated using software, compared with national DRIs, and analyzed using rank-based tests and Spearman correlations. Parents reported near-ceiling priority for restricting fats and sweets and consistently high priority for bread and potatoes, whereas vegetables, fruits, meat/fish, and dairy were rated moderately important, with dairy under-prioritized in 1–2-year-olds. On the recalled day, median intakes of fat, dietary fiber, vitamin C, and calcium were below national recommendations at all ages, and median intakes of iron, thiamine, and niacin were particularly low at 3–4 years, while sodium intake exceeded recommended levels; the 3–4-year group showed the most pronounced clustering of shortfalls. Prevalence estimates indicated that most children had intakes below recommendations for dietary fiber and calcium and above recommendations for sodium, underscoring population-wide nutritional imbalance. Across all scales, parental priorities showed only weak, non-significant associations with nutrient intakes (|r| < 0.11). These findings indicate a perception–intake gap and support interventions that ensure adequate fats, fiber, vitamin C, calcium, and bioavailable iron in preschool diets. Full article

Protecting aquatic biodiversity while ensuring reliable hydropower production and water supply remains a core challenge for both water security and biosecurity. In this PRISMA-based systematic review, we synthesize evidence from 96 studies on fish guidance and deterrence at hazardous water intakes. We examine non-physical barriers, including acoustic and light cues, electric fields, bubble curtains, and chemical stimuli, as well as physical barriers such as racks, guidance structures, and nets or screens that aim to divert fish away from intakes and toward selective passage routes. Overall, guidance and deterrence performance is strongly species- and site-specific. Multimodal systems that combine multiple cues show the highest mean guidance efficiency (~80%), followed by light-based deterrents (~77%). Acoustic, electric, and bubble barriers generally achieve intermediate efficiencies (~55–58%), whereas structural devices alone exhibit lower mean performance (~46%), with substantial variability among sites and designs. Physical screens remain effective for larger size classes but can increase head loss and debris accumulation. By contrast, non-physical systems offer more flexible, low-footprint options whose success depends critically on local hydraulics, the sensory ecology of target species, and ambient environmental conditions. We identify major knowledge gaps relating to underlying sensory and behavioral mechanisms, hydraulics-based design rules, and standardized performance metrics. We also highlight opportunities to integrate advanced monitoring and AI-based analytics into adaptive, site-specific guidance systems. Taken together, our findings show that carefully selected and tuned barrier technologies can provide practical pathways to enhance water security and biosecurity, while supporting sustainable fish passage, improving invasive-species control, and reducing ecological impacts at water infrastructure. Background/Objectives: Chronic low-grade inflammation and nutritional deficiencies, particularly vitamin D deficiency, have emerged as important contributors to Metabolic syndrome (MetS) pathogenesis but remain underexplored. This study aimed to comprehensively evaluate the associations between dietary intake, vitamin D status, and inflammatory biomarkers (high-sensitivity C-reactive protein -CRP- and ferritin) in patients with MetS. Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted on 141 adult MetS patients at a Mexican hospital. Clinical, anthropometric, dietary (using a validated food frequency questionnaire), and biochemical data including serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D, CRP, ferritin, and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) were collected. Vitamin D deficiency was defined as serum 25(OH)D < 20 ng/mL, and high inflammation as CRP ≥ 3 mg/L. Logistic regression models adjusted for confounders were used to analyze associations. Mediation analysis assessed whether vitamin D deficiency mediated the link between dietary intake and high CRP or ferritin. Results: Patients with elevated CRP had significantly lower serum vitamin D levels (14.0 ± 5.1 vs. 22.1 ± 7.0 ng/mL; p < 0.001). Multivariable analysis showed vitamin D deficiency (adjusted OR 7.1; 95% CI 2.5–19.4; p < 0.001) and hyperferritinemia (ferritin ≥ 200 μg/L; aOR 8.0, 95% CI 3.5–18.2, p < 0.001) as predictors of high CRP. Conversely, hyperferritinemia was predicted by vitamin D deficiency (aOR 24.69; 95% CI 3.76–162.16; p = 0.001), elevated CRP (aOR 5.06; p = 0.014), Hb (aOR 63.23; p < 0.001), and inversely by grade 2 obesity (aOR 0.11; 95% CI 0.02–0.60; p = 0.03), confirming bidirectional CRP-ferritin associations and hyperferritinemia as an inflammation marker rather than iron overload indicator. Although Hb > 14.3 g/dL associated with hyperferritinemia, it did not independently predict CRP in multivariate analyses. Frequent consumption of vitamin D-rich foods (milk, fish, Manchego and Oaxaca cheese) was associated with lower inflammation. Mediation analysis confirmed that vitamin D deficiency mediated dietary intake-CRP and dietary intake-ferritin links (Sobel test p < 0.05). Conclusions: Vitamin D deficiency is a key mediator linking inadequate dietary vitamin D intake to systemic inflammation in MetS. Nutritional strategies emphasizing vitamin D repletion and consumption of vitamin D fortified foods may effectively reduce chronic inflammation and improve metabolic outcomes. Full article

Methods: Temporal changes in dietary patterns and environmental footprints of 1684 students at the University of Rijeka, Croatia, over a 16-year period (2009–2025) were retrospectively analyzed using data from 3 cross-sectional studies. Results: A significant transition toward less sustainable diets, increased consumption of animal-based foods, and proinflammatory eating habits was observed (both p < 0.001). Adherence to the Mediterranean and Planetary Health Diet declined over time (p < 0.001), followed by increased prevalence of overweight and obesity. Three dietary patterns were identified: high fruit and vegetable intake, consistently high milk and dairy consumption, and lower-to-moderate intake of all other food groups with temporal variation. Consumption of most food groups increased, leading to higher water and ecological footprints. Only the intake of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fish declined, which corresponded with reduced carbon footprints for these and a few other food groups, while the environmental impact of other foods significantly increased (all p < 0.001). Gender, diet quality, and a proinflammatory diet were significant predictors of dietary environmental footprints. Conclusions: The findings underscore the need for systemic changes and addressing barriers at the university level to support sustainable eating behaviors. This study offers valuable insights for policymakers, educators, and researchers, which aim to help students become health-conscious and environmentally responsible consumers. Further research is needed to explore the broader factors influencing dietary choices and the long-term impact of future institutional interventions. Full article

We aimed to characterize PFAS exposure among adolescents in Nepal. We conducted a cross-sectional study in Chitwan District, Nepal, during September–October 2023, enrolling 73 adolescents from the Chitwan Birth Cohort. Methods: Dried blood spots from 48 participants were analyzed for 45 PFAS by liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry. Sociodemographic and contextual behavioral covariates information (e.g., water source and local fish consumption) were collected via questionnaire. We used linear regression to analyze the association between contextual behavioral covariates and PFAS concentrations. Results: PFOS was detected in 46% of samples, followed by PFNA (25%) and PFOA (12.5%); other PFAS were rarely detected. Participants who consumed locally caught fish more than once per month had significantly higher PFOS levels (β = 0.35, p = 0.006). Conclusions: Frequent fish intake was the only factor significantly associated with PFAS levels, suggesting a dietary exposure pathway. This study provides the first documentation of PFAS exposure among Nepalese adolescents, revealing low-level exposures. Findings underscore the need for ongoing surveillance of environmental contaminants in vulnerable populations. Full article

Background: Depression represents a major public health burden in Hungary, where prevalence remains higher than the global average. Although diet is an increasingly studied factor associated with mental health, evidence from Central and Eastern Europe is scarce. Methods: This cross-sectional study analyzed data from the Hungarian wave of the European Health Interview Survey (EHIS) 2019, a nationally representative sample of 5603 adults aged ≥15 years. Depressive symptom severity was assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-8 (PHQ-8) and categorized as none (0–4), mild (5–9), and moderate-to-severe (≥10). Self-reported frequency of consumption of fruits, vegetables, fruit juice, dairy products, fish, processed meat, sweetened beverages, coffee, and sweeteners was examined. Multivariable ordinal logistic regression models, adjusted for gender, age, education, income, physical activity, smoking, and alcohol consumption, were used to estimate associations with depressive symptom severity. Results: Overall, 77.9% of participants had no depression, 17.0% mild, and 5.1% moderate-to-severe symptoms. After full adjustment, lower consumption of fruits and vegetables, less frequent fruit juice intake, and lower processed meat consumption were associated with higher odds of more severe depressive symptoms. Moderate coffee intake (1–2 cups/day) was associated with lower odds than heavier consumption. Conclusions: In the Hungarian adult population, poorer dietary patterns, particularly low intake of fruits, vegetables, and paradoxically lower processed meat consumption, are significantly associated with greater depressive symptom severity, independent of major sociodemographic and lifestyle factors. These findings underscore the potential role of diet quality in mental health and support public health efforts to promote nutrient-rich dietary patterns in Hungary. Full article

Background/Objectives: HMOs are the third most abundant solid component after lactose and fats in human milk. This study aimed to examine the relationships between maternal diet and HMO composition and concentration in human milk among lactating women in Latvia. Methods: Pooled 24 h human milk samples, 72 h food diaries, and questionnaires on anthropometric and sociodemographic characteristics were collected from 68 exclusively breastfeeding women residing in Latvia. HMOs were analyzed by UHPLC/FLD, and dietary data were analyzed using the Estonian NutriData program. Results: The eight most abundant HMO structures were determined with total concentration ranging between 178.66 and 32,910.09 mg L−1. 2′-FL was the most prevalent HMO in human milk (median concentration—3647 mg L−1), followed by 3′-FL (1436.74 mg L−1). Participants had an insufficient intake of vegetables, fruits, berries, milk and dairy products, and fish, leading to vitamin A, vitamin C, folate, and iodine intakes lower than recommended for lactating women. Limitation or exclusion of milk and dairy products from the diet was associated with a higher 2′-FL concentration in human milk (p = 0.037). Preference for “zero sugar” products was associated with a higher 3′-FL, 6′-GL, LNnT, 6′-SL, LNDFH II concentration in human milk (p < 0.050). Dietary supplement use (e.g., vitamin D, calcium) was also associated with differences in HMO composition and concentration in milk (p < 0.050). Conclusions: The findings highlight the importance of dietary habits and supplement use in shaping HMO profiles, though more human milk samples and dietary data need to be evaluated to draw further conclusions. Background/Objectives: Evidence links children’s health-related quality of life (HRQoL) to overall diet, but data on specific, actionable habits are limited. We tested whether vegetable intake ≥2 portions/day and fish intake ≥2–3 times/week were associated with risk of low HRQoL (KIDSCREEN-10 Index score <40) and assessed their joint effect and robustness to overall diet quality. Methods: In three waves (2020–2023) in Madrid (Spain), 1127 observations from 771 children (8–12 years) were analysed. Logistic Generalised Estimating Equations (GEE) adjusted for age, sex, socioeconomic status (four levels), moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), screen time, body mass index (BMI) z-score, wave and school ownership. Marginal predicted probabilities were computed for four exposure combinations (neither, vegetables only, fish only, both). Sensitivity models added school area and the Mediterranean Diet Quality Index (KIDMED; KIDMED_wo_FV and total); hybrid within–between GEE and a linear mixed model for continuous KIDSCREEN-10 were also fitted. Results: Vegetables ≥2/day and fish ≥2–3/week were inversely associated with low HRQoL (odds ratio (OR) 0.49 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.30–0.82) and 0.61 (0.43–0.87)). The interaction was positive (OR 2.50 (1.39–4.53)). Adjusted probabilities were 40.1% (neither), 25.8% (vegetables only; −14.3 percentage points (p.p.)), 29.7% (fish only; −10.5 p.p.), and 34.0% (both; −6.1 p.p.). Findings persisted with KIDMED_wo_FV and attenuated with total KIDMED. MVPA related inversely and screen time directly to risk. Conclusions: Vegetables ≥2/day and fish ≥2–3/week were associated with lower odds of low HRQoL, with non-additive combined effects. These simple targets may complement physical-activity promotion and reduced screen time; longitudinal/experimental studies should test causality and dose–response. Full article

Background/Objectives: The Fourth Italian National Food Consumption Survey (IV SCAI 2017–2020) provides updated and comprehensive data on the dietary habits of the Italian population. The study aimed to assess nutrient intakes and their main food sources among individuals aged 3 months to 74 years and to evaluate the adequacy of intakes against the Italian dietary reference values (DRVs). Methods: A nationally representative sample of 1969 participants were surveyed using two non-consecutive food diaries (ages 3 months–9 years) and 24 h recalls (ages 10–74 years) in accordance with the European Food Safety Authority’s EU Menu guideline. The multiple source method was used to estimate the usual intakes accounted for intra-individual variability. Nutrient adequacy was assessed against age- and sex-specific DRVs, and the main food sources of macro- and micronutrients were identified. Results: Energy intake was below DRVs for adults, particularly women, while protein intake exceeded recommendations across all ages, mainly from animal sources (67% of total). Total fat (38%En) and saturated fat (12%En) exceeded the recommendations, whereas carbohydrates (45%En) and dietary fibre were suboptimal. Vitamin D and calcium intake were markedly below DRVs for all age groups; iron inadequacy was prevalent among females. The main energy sources were cereals (39%), milk and dairy (15%), oils and fats (13%), and meat (10%). Vegetables and fruits were leading contributors to vitamins A and C, while meat, fish, and dairy provided vitamin B12 and D. Conclusions: The Italian diet remains cereal-based but shows nutritional imbalances: notably, excessive protein and fat intake and widespread deficiencies in vitamin D, calcium, iron, and fibre. These findings underline the need for targeted nutrition policies to realign dietary patterns with the national recommendations. Full article
