This article investigates the role of space in the fiction of Jeffrey Eugenides, focusing on The Virgin Suicides (1993) and Middlesex (2002) through the lens of spatial theory. Drawing on key thinkers such as Henri Lefebvre, Michel Foucault, Edward Soja, Yi-Fu Tuan, and Doreen Massey, the study explores how Eugenides constructs spatial environments that not only frame but actively shape the identities, desires, and traumas of his characters. In The Virgin Suicides, suburban domestic spaces are shown to function as heterotopias—sites of surveillance, repression, and mythologized femininity—while Middlesex engages with transnational and urban spaces to narrate diasporic and intersex identity as dynamic, embodied, and liminal. The analysis reveals that Eugenides uses space as both a narrative device and a thematic concern to interrogate gender, memory, and power. Rather than passive backdrops, the novelistic spaces become charged arenas of conflict and transformation, reflecting and resisting dominant socio-cultural discourses. This study argues that space in Eugenides’ fiction operates as a critical register for understanding the politics of belonging and the production of subjectivity. By situating Eugenides within the broader field of literary spatiality, this article contributes to contemporary debates in literary geography, gender studies, and American fiction. Full article

Despite extensive prevention strategies in Spain since the 1980s, gender-based violence, including among adolescents, remains prevalent, as observed in the Romance SUCC-ED Project (R&D&I Operating Programme ERDF Andalusia 2014–2020). This research study investigates the dimensions, meanings, relationships, and practices shaping the culture of romance in digital Andalusian adolescence (12–16 years) and its potential impact on school trajectories in Compulsory Secondary Education. Based on the premise that equality-focused relationship education is key to preventing gender violence, the study employs an ethnographic methodology with 12 Andalusian school case studies (4 out of them are located in rural areas) and 220 in-depth interviews (126 girls, 57.3%; 94 boys, 42.7%). This article aims to empirically explain gender violence in early adolescence by analysing the culture of romance as an explanatory factor. Findings reveal an interconnected model where dimensions (love, couple, sexuality, pornography, social networks, and cultural references), meanings (constructed by adolescents within each of them), relationships (partner), and practices (control and jealousy) reinforce romanticised femininity and dominant masculinity, thus explaining the high incidence of gender-based violence among students in the study. Certain bodily functions are generally associated with distinct sexes and genders. When it comes to intersex individuals, the gendering of certain bodily functions as male or female plays a key role in determining their sexed corporeality and self-determination of gender. The article elucidates how the protagonist Ash in Just Ash (2021) by Sol Santana is oppressed under notions of menstrunormativity due to his menstruating body. It explains how the gendering of a bodily function like menstruation as feminine plays a significant role in the medical interventions on intersex individuals and how the same norms affect intersex individuals’ own perceptions of themselves. Ash, who identifies himself as a boy, is bullied by his peers at school, and his parents impose the female sex and feminine gender identity on him because of his menstruating corporeality, all leading to Ash’s own negative perception of his body. The article also highlights the importance of degendering menstruation to include sex- and gender-diverse individuals. Full article

A central figure in Dante’s oeuvre, Beatrice, has been the subject of diverse interpretations and enduring critical debate across centuries. This study presents a comprehensive bibliographic review of Beatrice’s reception over the last twenty-five years, mapping the principal interpretive trends and methodological approaches that have shaped contemporary scholarship. The analysis organizes these contributions into five key thematic areas: 1. investigations into Beatrice’s historical and allegorical significance; 2. readings informed by a biblical perspective; 3. analyses exploring the relationship between Beatrice and Dante’s conception of love; 4. examinations of her literary meaning, often through metatextual and intertextual perspectives; and 5. gender-based inquiries that situate Beatrice within broader discourses on femininity and medieval representation. Additionally, the paper considers alternative interpretations beyond these dominant categories. Finally, the study identifies points of convergence and divergence between critical approaches to Beatrice and those applied to another emblematic female figure, Fiammetta, offering a comparative perspective on their scholarly reception. Gender roles are sociocultural constructs that shape the behaviors, attitudes, and values associated with men and women that influence social structures, equity, and sustainability. While these constructs reflect societal expectations, they also limit opportunities and affect emotional well-being. As their evolution has not been consistent, rigid norms continue to hinder social progress. Ensuring that gender norms evolve toward inclusivity and equality is essential for the long-term well-being of societies. This study examines conformity to gender norms in Spain, considering age and educational level, with the aim of guiding public policies and educational strategies to foster social cohesion and equity. A quantitative methodology was employed, using the Conformity to Masculine Gender Norms Inventory and the Conformity to Feminine Gender Norms Inventory to assess adherence to traditional gender expectations. The sample consisted of 380 individuals aged 18 to 85 years. This study reveals a moderate-to-low level of conformity to gender norms but highlights a resurgence of traditional roles among younger individuals. These findings underscore the need for interventions that promote inclusive models and emphasize the importance of ongoing research to understand the impact of cultural, media, and generational factors on attitudes toward gender roles. My essay aims at considering the mythological figure of Melusina and her literary development, starting from the Middle Ages up to the Romantic period. The main purpose is to determine how this fictional entity, originally regarded as the symbol of nature and its fecundity, has changed over the time in relation to the historical and cultural complex and how this has reverberated in terms of interpretation of the identity of the literary character. I will consider the medieval versions of Jean D’Arras (1392), with some consequent references to Coudrette (1401–1405) and von Ringoltingen (1456), and the German romantic fairytale rewriting of Ludwig Tieck (1800). If the thematic nucleus remains the same, the configuration of the female character changes by reflecting the new Romantic poetics in terms of interest towards femininity, subjectivity and the study of the morphology of the Earth. In particular, Melusina is no longer seen as a mere and passive object, but as a subject who for the first time, hiding in an emblematic cave, reveals to the reader her own interiority and her own truth, totally assimilating herself to the external environment. The conclusion will show how the cultural subtext modifies the interpretation of this atavistic character. Full article

This research investigates the impact of cultural dimensions on service quality expectations in electric vehicle (EV) dealerships. Grounded in Hofstede’s cultural theory and employing a data-driven approach, the study utilizes a series of robust analytical techniques, including the SVM algorithm, factor analysis, and ANOVA. Through a comprehensive analysis of EV customers’ expectations for expertise, empathy, and responsiveness, the findings reveal that cultural dimensions significantly shape service quality expectations, regardless of the service provider’s gender. Notably, consumers with a stronger masculine orientation have lower expectations for expertise but higher expectations for empathy than those with a stronger feminine orientation. These findings challenge the traditional emphasis on gender as a key factor in service quality expectations and underscore the need to incorporate cultural values in service strategy design and quality improvement in the EV industry. This article critically examines the star persona of Lola Flores, an iconic Spanish flamenco artist, within the historical and political context of Francoist Spain (1939–1975). It argues that Flores’s carefully constructed star image not only persisted into post-Franco Spain but also served as a covert vehicle for the continued propagation of National-Falangist Catholic ideology. The article primarily focuses on two major productions: the book Lola en carne viva. Memorias de Lola Flores (1990) and the television series El coraje de vivir (1994). Both portray a linear and cohesive version of her life from childhood to her later years, carefully curated to defend and rehabilitate her image. While many view Flores as a self-made artist, the article argues that her star persona was a deliberate construct—shaped by Suevia Films, a major Francoist-era film studio, and media narratives that aligned her with traditional gender roles, Catholic values, and Spanish nationalism. Despite emerging in post-Franco Spain, Flores’s narrative does not mark a rupture from the ideological frameworks of the past. Instead, it repackages Francoist values—particularly those surrounding patriarchal gender norms, suffering, and the glorification of sacrifice—to ensure her continued relevance. Suevia Films (1951) played a significant role in shaping her star persona as a symbol of Spanish folklore, aligning her with Francoist ideals of nation, Catholic morality, and submissive femininity. Her image was used to promote Spain internationally as a welcoming and culturally rich destination. Her persona fit within Franco’s broader strategy of using flamenco and folklore to attract foreign tourism while maintaining tight ideological control over entertainment. Flores’s life is framed as a rags-to-riches story, which reinforces Social Spencerist ideology (a social Darwinist perspective) that hard work and endurance lead to success, rather than acknowledging systemic oppression under Francoism. Her personal struggles—poverty, romantic disappointments, accusations of collaboration with the Franco regime, and tax evasion—are framed as necessary trials that strengthen her character. This aligns with the Catholic ideal of redemptive suffering, reinforcing her status as the mater dolorosa (Sorrowful Mother) figure. This article highlights the contradictions in Flores’s gender performance—while she embodied passion and sensuality in flamenco, her offstage identity conformed to the submissive, self-sacrificing woman idealized by the Francoist Sección Femenina (SF). Even in her personal life, Flores’s narrative aligns with Francoist values—her father’s bar, La Fe de Pedro Flores, symbolizes the fusion of religion, nationalism, and traditional masculinity. Tico Medina plays a key role by framing Lola en carne viva as an “authentic” and unfiltered account. His portrayal is highly constructed, acting as her “defense lawyer” to counter criticisms. Flores’s autobiography is monologic—it suppresses alternative perspectives, ensuring that her version of events remains dominant and unquestioned. Rather than acknowledging structural oppression, the narrative glorifies suffering as a path to resilience, aligning with both Catholic doctrine and Francoist propaganda. The article ultimately deconstructs Lola Flores’s autobiographical myth, demonstrating that her public persona—both onstage and offstage—was a strategic construction that perpetuated Francoist ideals well beyond the dictatorship. While her image has been celebrated as a symbol of Spanish cultural identity, it also functioned as a tool for maintaining patriarchal and nationalist ideologies under the guise of entertainment. Background: For children, the decision to play a specific musical instrument may be influenced by several factors. Among them, a relevant role is played by beliefs about gender appropriateness of musical instruments, which may guide the choice toward instruments “for boys” or “for girls”. This would limit the range of choices available, overshadowing preferences based on aesthetic and personal tastes. Methods: the current study aims to investigate stereotypical beliefs about gender appropriateness of musical instruments among Italian primary and middle school students. An online questionnaire with close-end and open-end questions has been proposed to 370 students. Qualitative and quantitative analyses have been performed. Results: indications emerged about the presence of specific beliefs about gender appropriateness for some musical instruments. There is a tendency for both girls and boys to express a major preference for those instruments which are considered “feminine” (for girls) and “masculine” (for boys). Conclusions: Among children, there still persist some gender stereotypes about specific instruments, although these are not so strong. The gender of the participants, and not their level of education and musical experience, seems to be a discriminating factor in the appearance of such beliefs. Educators should encourage students to experiment with different musical instruments. Full article

Backround: The aim is to analyze whether sex and gender are associated with missed acute ischemic stroke (M-AIS). Methods: We performed a nested case-control study, using data collected from March 2003 to December 2020 from ASTRAL (Acute STroke Registry and Analysis of Lausanne). M-AIS were compared with a randomly selected control sample of acute ischmemic stroke (AIS). We extracted six gender-related socioeconomic variables. A gendered socioeconomic position (SEP) score was constructed reflecting the level of correspondence with feminine characteristics. Associations between M-AIS and the gender-related socioeconomic variables and the gendered SEP score were investigated using logistic regression. Results: Of the 6007 AIS, 182 (3%) were M-AIS. 80 (44%) were women. No association between administrative sex and M-AIS was found (OR 1.25, 95% CI 0.78–2.00). Differences were found for gender-related socioeconomic variables, women in the middle professional category had higher odds of an M-AIS compared to women in the lower professional category (OR 3.93, 95% CI 1.19–13.03). Men with higher education had lower odds of an M-AIS compared to men with lower education (OR 0.31, 95% CI 0.10–0.92). For women, a 20-unit increase in the gendered SEP score was associated with lower odds of an M-AIS (OR 0.66, 95% CI 0.46–0.94). For men, the same increase in the score tended to higher the odds of an M-AIS (OR 1.52, 95% CI 1.00–2.32). Conclusions: The interaction of administrative sex with gender-related socioeconomic variables revealed different associations with M-AIS for women and men. Correspondence to expected gender norms may have a protective effect against M-AIS. Full article

Background/Objectives: Adolescent girls’ physical activity levels are well below the minimum recommended levels for health and wellbeing. Rural-dwelling adolescents may also experience decreased physical activity levels than their urban counterparts, placing rural adolescent girls at a greater disadvantage. The reasons for these low levels are multifactorial, including, but not limited to, age, geographical locations, and gendered stereotypes surrounding activities. Qualitative investigations into adolescent girls’ physical activity can provide deeper understandings on the key barriers and supports that specific populations experience and have been limited in the current literature. This study explores the physical activity experiences of adolescent girls living in rural Nova Scotia to provide deeper understandings of the needs of this population to inform physical activity policy and programming. Methods: Heideggerian hermeneutic phenomenology and feminist post-structuralism were used in a bricolage fashion to analyze six semi-structured interviews from adolescent girls between 11–13 years old living in rural eastern Nova Scotia. Results: Three major themes were identified from the interviews: (1) what physical activity looks like depends on your definition; (2) “What do you do when the boys take over the gym?”; and (3) “It’s really nice to have space…but there’s a lot less options out here”. The themes were not independent, but rather all were linked by the threads of gendered sociocultural expectations and hegemonic femininity. Conclusions: Distinct physical activity identities were exposed within the stories, shaped by parental and peer supports, personal ideals, sociocultural gender roles, and individual sense of agency surrounding physical activity engagement. Rural adolescent girls need both increased social and parental support to better navigate barriers of location and gender stereotypes that may be limiting their physical activity. Full article

Physical activity interventions and programming for Black American girls often overlook racism and sexism as a fundamental cause of the differences in engagement between their white and male peers. Deficit framing is a standard where Black girls are often compared to the health, physical activity, and beauty standards driven by white feminine or masculine norms, suggesting there is only one way to be fit and healthy. Approaches that lack cultural and historical relevance, including the effects of systemic racism and sexism, are seldom considered before aiming to increase physical activity engagement and favorable health outcomes for Black teenage girls. Aim: This paper presents a brief overview of physical activity programming for Black adolescent girls and young women (aged 14–18) and proposes theoretical frameworks and approaches to consider before implementing physical activity interventions and programs. Concluding Remarks: Voice, intersectionality, misogynoir, representation, and gendered racism as a root cause should inform physical activity programming designed for Black adolescent girls. Culturally equitable approaches for real and sustainable change are required to increase physical activity engagement. Full article

Background: While previous studies have shown that occupational choices are influenced by traditional gender perceptions, little is known about gender’s role in choosing self-employment among family physicians. Family medicine, with its emphasis on holistic and integrative attitudes that align with independent practice characteristics, presents a unique context for examining gender-related decisions in choosing self-employment. Objectives: To examine the role of gender in family physicians’ transition to self-employed practice, focusing on gender differences in motivations and considerations for this career choice, and to analyze how traditional gender roles manifest in professional decision-making among highly educated medical professionals. Methods: A qualitative study based on in-depth interviews was conducted with 27 self-employed family physicians in Israel who recently chose to start independent practice rather than remaining salaried physicians in Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs). Interviews were analyzed using thematic content analysis with a gender-sensitive approach. Results: Despite their advanced education and professional status, female family physicians tended to maintain traditional gender patterns in their professional choices. Women emphasized work–family flexibility as a primary consideration and expressed less confidence in financial management self-efficacy, often delegating these responsibilities to their spouses. In contrast, male family physicians displayed traditionally “feminine” characteristics in their professional approach, including emphasis on holistic care and family involvement. Male physicians also cited work–life balance and the opportunity for a more comprehensive, biopsychosocial approach to patient care as key factors in choosing family medicine and self-employment. Conclusions: The findings demonstrate the complexity of gender roles in family physicians’ professional choices, revealing both persistence of traditional gender roles among women and different patterns among men. While male physicians displayed characteristics traditionally identified as feminine, these patterns may reflect both gender role evolution and generational shifts towards work–family integration and collaborative patient care. This study highlights how gender and generational factors shape career decisions in primary care, with implications for medical education and healthcare organization policies. Full article

Introduction: Women experience more social barriers, gender stereotypes, biases, and discrimination than men, which can increase their vulnerability to mental health problems. Therefore, it is essential to adopt a gender perspective in research on nursing students, examining the impact of these factors on their well-being and psychological resources like resilience. This study aims to analyze the relationship between gender roles in resilience and positive or negative affect among female nursing students. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with first- and fourth-year female nursing students at a public university in Madrid, Spain. Sociodemographic variables, positive and negative affect (PANAS scale), resilience (CD-RISC scale), and gender roles (BRSI inventory) were analyzed. ANOVA, correlation analysis, and linear regression models were used to study the relationships between variables. Results: The study included 338 students with a mean age of 21.43 years, of which 80.2% had a high level of resilience, with a positive affect score of 31.96 (SD: 7.34) and a negative affect score of 22.99 (SD: 7.35). Overall, 48.5% had undifferentiated roles, 23.7% feminine roles, 14.2% androgynous roles, and 13.6% masculine roles. Female students with masculine and androgynous roles showed higher resilience levels (93.48% and 97.92%) compared to those with feminine and undifferentiated roles (81.25% and 70.73%) (p < 0.001). Female students with androgynous and masculine roles showed higher positive affect levels compared to those with feminine and undifferentiated roles (p < 0.001), with no differences in negative affect. These results were observed in both first- and fourth-year students. A high correlation was found between masculine roles and positive affect and resilience in both first- and fourth-year students. Conclusions: Gender roles influence positive affect and resilience in females. Among female nursing students, androgynous and masculine roles are associated with higher levels of resilience and positive affect compared to feminine and undifferentiated roles. Differences in psychological well-being may be related to socially constructed gender roles rather than biological sex, with masculine roles enhancing resilience and feminine roles correlating with greater vulnerability. Background/Objectives: This study aims to examine the impact of the caregiving role on quality of life, perceived burden, gender dissonance, and self-stigma among male caregivers of individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS) in Andalusia, Spain. Methods: A total of 44 male caregivers participated, completing questionnaires on sociodemographic and functional characteristics of the persons with MS (PwMS) they cared for. Measures included the Caregiving Tasks in Multiple Sclerosis Scale (CTiMSS), the Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI), quality of life (WHOQOL-BREF), gender perception, and self-stigma. Data analysis employed ANOVA and regression analyses to assess the relationship between perceived burden and quality of life. Results: Male caregivers experienced significant burden, particularly in instrumental and social–practical caregiving tasks, with a mean score of 23.9 on the ZBI. Perceived burden was inversely related to quality of life, notably impacting physical and psychological health. Sixteen percent of caregivers reported cognitive self-stigma, though without affective or behavioral manifestations. Gender dissonance was observed, as men often perceived certain caregiving tasks as feminine; however, many integrated this role within their masculine identity. Conclusions: Male caregivers of PwMS face the dual burden of caregiving demands and traditional gender expectations. While gender dissonance and low levels of self-stigma were observed, most caregivers adapted by integrating caregiving into their identity. These findings highlight the need for tailored interventions to address their unique challenges and enhance their well-being. Full article
