Skeletal muscle regeneration depends on muscle stem cells, which give rise to myoblasts that drive muscle growth, repair, and maintenance. In bats—the only mammals capable of powered flight—these processes must also sustain contractile performance under extreme mechanical and metabolic stress. However, the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying bat muscle physiology remain largely unknown. To enable mechanistic investigation of these traits, we established the first myoblast cell lines from the pectoralis muscle of Pteronotus mesoamericanus, a highly maneuverable aerial insectivore. Using both spontaneous immortalization and exogenous hTERT/CDK4 gene overexpression, we generated two stable cell lines that retain proliferative capacity and differentiate into contractile myotubes. These cells exhibit frequent spontaneous contractions, suggesting robust functional integrity at the neuromuscular junction. In parallel, we performed transcriptomic and metabolic profiling of native pectoralis tissue in the closely related Pteronotus parnellii to define molecular programs supporting muscle specialization. Gene expression analyses revealed enriched pathways for muscle metabolism, development, and regeneration, highlighting supporting roles in tissue maintenance and repair. Consistent with this profile, the flight muscle is triglyceride-rich, which serves as an important fuel source for energetically demanding processes, including muscle contraction and cellular recovery. Integration of transcriptomic and metabolic data identified three key metabolic modules—glucose utilization, lipid handling, and nutrient signaling—that likely coordinate ATP production and support metabolic flexibility. Together, these complementary tools and datasets provide the first in vitro platform for investigating bat muscle research, enabling direct exploration of muscle regeneration, metabolic resilience, and evolutionary physiology. In the era of generative artificial intelligence, writing has evolved into a programmable practice capable of generating sustainable narratives and preserving cultural heritage through poetic prompts. This study proposes “Writing Is Coding ” as a paradigm for sustainability education, exploring how students engage with AI-mediated multimodal creation to address environmental challenges. Using grounded theory methodology with 57 twelfth-grade students from technology-integrated high schools, we analyzed their experiences creating environmental stories and digital cultural artifacts using MidJourney, Kling, and Sora. Data collection involved classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and reflective journals, analyzed through systematic coding procedures (κ = 0.82). Five central themes emerged: writing as algorithmic design for sustainability (89.5%), emotional scaffolding for environmental awareness (78.9%), aesthetics of imperfection in cultural preservation (71.9%), collaborative dynamics in sustainable creativity (84.2%), and pedagogical value of prompt literacy (91.2%). Findings indicate that AI deepens environmental consciousness and reframes writing as a computational process for addressing global issues. This research contributes a theoretical framework integrating expressive writing with algorithmic thinking in AI-assisted sustainability education, aligned with SDGs 4, 11, and 13. Full article

Large soil pores critically influence water and solute transport in soils. The presence of preferential flow paths created by soil macropores can profoundly impact water quality, underscoring the necessity of accurately assessing the characteristics of these macropores. However, it remains unclear whether variations in macropore structure exist between different altitudes and positions of terraced paddy fields. The primary objective of this research was to utilize X-ray computed tomography (CT) and image analysis techniques to characterize the soil pore structure at both the inner field and ridge positions across different altitude levels (high, medium, and low altitude) within terraced paddy fields. The results indicate that there are significant differences in the distribution of large soil pores at different altitudes, with large pores concentrated in the surface layer (0–10 cm) in low-altitude areas, while in high-altitude areas, the distribution of large pores is more uniform. Additionally, as altitude increases, the porosity of large pores shows an increasing trend. The three-dimensional equivalent diameter and large pore volume are primarily characterized by large pores ranging from 1 to 2 mm and 0 to 5 mm3, respectively, with their morphology predominantly appearing spherical or ellipsoidal. The connectivity of large pores in the surface layer of paddy soil is stronger than that in the bunds. However, this connectivity gradually weakens with increasing soil depth. The findings from this study provide valuable quantitative insights into the unique characteristics of soil macropores that vary according to the altitude and position in terraced paddy fields. Moreover, this study emphasizes the necessity for future research that encompasses a broader range of soil types, altitudes, and terraced paddy locations to validate and further explore the identified relationships between altitude and macropore characteristics. This paper explores the intervening role in SEP performance of corporate environmental, cultural, and ethnic activities (ECEAs) and diversity, equity, inclusion, and social initiatives (DEISIs) on blockchain adoption (BCA) strategy, particularly useful in the Western Balkans (WB), which demands transparency due to extended fraud and ethnic complexities. In this domain, a question has been raised: In BCA strategies, is there any correlation between SEP performance and ECEAs and DEISIs in a mediating role? A serial mediation model was tested on a dataset of 630 WB and EU companies, and the research conceptual model was validated by CFA (Confirmation Factor Analysis), and the SEM (Structural Equation Model) fit was assessed. We found a statistically sound (significant, positive) correlation between BCA and ESG success performance, especially in the innovation and integrity ESG performance success indicators, when DEISIs mediate. The findings confirmed the influence of technology, and environmental, cultural, ethnic, and social factors on BCA strategy. The findings revealed some important issues of BCA that are of worth to WB companies’ managers to address BCA for better performance. This study adds to the literature on corporate blockchain transformation, especially for organizations seeking investment opportunities in new international markets to diversify their assets and skill pool. Furthermore, it contributes to a deeper understanding of how DEI initiatives impact the correlation between business transformation and socioeconomic performance, which is referred to as the “social impact”. The siphon effect between airports has amplified the polarization in passenger throughput, undermining the balanced development and sustainability of airport clusters. The airport siphon effect occurs when one airport attracts a disproportionate share of passengers, concentrating traffic at the expense of others, which affects the overall resilience of the entire airport cluster. To address this issue, this study proposes a siphon index, expands the range of ground transportation options for passengers, and establishes a zero-siphon model to assess the impact of siphoning on the resiliency of airport clusters. Using this framework, four major airport clusters in China were selected as research subjects, with regional aviation accessibility serving as a measure of resilience. The results showed that among the four airport clusters, the siphon effect is most pronounced in the Guangzhou region. To explore the implications of this effect further, three airport disruption scenarios were simulated to assess the resilience of the Pearl River Delta airport cluster. The results indicated that the intensity and timing of disruptive events significantly affect airport cluster resilience, with hub airports being particularly sensitive. This study analyzes the risks associated with excessive route concentration, providing policymakers with critical insights to enhance the sustainability, equity, and resilience of airport clusters. The proposed strategies facilitate coordinated infrastructure development, optimized air–ground intermodal connectivity, and risk mitigation. These measures contribute to building more sustainable and adaptive aviation networks in rapidly urbanizing regions. Full article

This study investigates mechanisms that influence how users perceive a technology’s usefulness after adoption as they continue to use the technology. The Expectation Confirmation Model (ECM) has been widely used to examine the key drivers of IT continuance, emphasizing perceived usefulness as a central factor. Although researchers have explored factors, such as ease of use, trust, and site quality, affecting post-adoption perceived usefulness, the mechanisms shaping post-adoption perceived usefulness remain underexplored. This study proposes that post-adoption perceived usefulness is shaped through the actualization of the technology’s affordances. Using a survey focused on fitness app usage (e.g., Fitbit), we examined various affordances users actualize and whether actualization of an affordance shapes their perception of usefulness. Results show that some affordances are actualized widely by most users (e.g., exercise status updating) while others are actualized by fewer users (e.g., reminders to exercise or guiding users how to exercise). Moreover, when an affordance is widely actualized, it significantly influences users’ perceptions of usefulness within the ECM framework. Given that perceived usefulness is a key factor in predicting IT continuance, our findings contribute to the literature by highlighting the influence of actualized affordances on perceptions of usefulness and hence IT continuance. This systematic literature review explores the socio-ethical implications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in contemporary media content generation. Drawing from 44 peer-reviewed sources, policy documents, and industry reports, the study synthesizes findings across three core domains: bias detection, storytelling transformation, and ethical governance frameworks. Through thematic coding and structured analysis, the review identifies recurring tensions between automation and authenticity, efficiency and editorial integrity, and innovation and institutional oversight. It introduces the Human–AI Co-Creation Continuum as a conceptual model for understanding hybrid narrative production and proposes practical recommendations for ethical AI adoption in journalism. The review concludes with a future research agenda emphasizing empirical studies, cross-cultural governance models, and audience perceptions of AI-generated content. This aligns with prior studies on algorithmic journalism. Full article

Background/Objectives: Most snakebite incidents in Latin America are caused by species of the Bothrops genus. Their venom induces severe local effects, against which antivenom therapy has limited efficacy. Metabolites derived from Coffea arabica have demonstrated anti-inflammatory and anticoagulant properties, suggesting their potential as therapeutic agents to inhibit the local effects induced by B. asper venom. Methods: Three enzymatic assays were performed: inhibition of the procoagulant and amidolytic activities of snake venom serine proteinases (SVSPs); inhibition of the proteolytic activity of snake venom metalloproteinases (SVMPs); and inhibition of the catalytic activity of snake venom phospholipases A2 (PLA2s). Additionally, molecular docking studies were conducted to propose potential inhibitory mechanisms of the metabolites chlorogenic acid, caffeine, and caffeic acid. Results: Green and roasted coffee extracts partially inhibited the enzymatic activity of SVSPs and SVMPs. Notably, the green coffee extract, at a 1:20 ratio, effectively inhibited PLA2 activity. Among the individual metabolites tested, partial inhibition of SVSP and PLA2 activities was observed, whereas no significant inhibition of SVMP proteolytic activity was detected. Chlorogenic acid was the most effective metabolite, significantly prolonging plasma coagulation time and achieving up to 82% inhibition at a concentration of 62.5 μM. Molecular docking analysis revealed interactions between chlorogenic acid and key active site residues of SVSP and PLA2 enzymes from B. asper venom. Conclusions: The roasted coffee extract demonstrated the highest inhibitory effect on venom toxins, potentially due to the formation of bioactive compounds during the Maillard reaction. Molecular modeling suggests that the tested inhibitors may bind to and occupy the substrate-binding clefts of the target enzymes. These findings support further in vivo research to explore the use of plant-derived polyphenols as adjuvant therapies in the treatment of snakebite envenoming. Full article

This study focuses on Shanghai, a pioneer city in China’s community renewal practices. In recent years, community renewal driven by civic participation has become a prominent research topic, leading to the emergence of numerous exemplary cases in Shanghai. However, field investigations revealed that many projects have experienced varying degrees of physical deterioration and a decline in spatial vitality due to insufficient maintenance, reflecting unsustainable outcomes. In response, this study examines a bottom-up community renewal project led by the research team, aiming to explore how broad civic participation can promote sustainable community renewal. A multidisciplinary approach incorporating perspectives from ecology, the humanities, economics, and sociology was used to guide citizen participation, while participatory observation methods recorded emotional shifts and maintenance behavior throughout the process. The results showed that civic participatory actions under the guidance of sustainability principles effectively enhanced citizens’ sense of community identity and responsibility, thereby facilitating the sustainable upkeep and operation of community spaces. However, the study also found that bottom-up efforts alone are insufficient. Sustainable community renewal also requires top-down policy support and institutional safeguards. At the end, the paper concludes by summarizing the practical outcomes and proposing strategies and mechanisms for broader application, aiming to provide a reference for related practices and research. This study explores entertainment consumption patterns in Romania, a transitional digital culture characterized by high digital connectivity but underdeveloped physical infrastructure. Employing a dual qualitative coding methodology, this research combines inductive analysis of consumer focus groups with deductive analysis of expert interviews, enabling a multi-layered interpretation of both overt behaviors and latent emotional drivers. Seven key thematic dimensions, motivational depth, perceived barriers, emotional needs, clarity of preferences, future behavioral intentions, social connection, and identity construction, were analyzed and compared using a Likert-based scoring framework, supported by a radar chart and comparison matrix. Findings reveal both convergence and divergence between consumer and expert perspectives. While consumers emphasize immediate experiences and logistical constraints, experts uncover deeper emotional motivators such as validation, mentorship, and identity formation. This behavioral–emotional gap suggests that, although digital entertainment dominates due to accessibility, it often lacks the emotional richness associated with physical formats, which are preferred but less accessible. This study underscores the importance of triangulated qualitative inquiry in revealing not only stated preferences but also unconscious psychological needs. It offers actionable insights for designing emotionally intelligent and culturally responsive entertainment strategies in digitally saturated yet infrastructure-limited environments. Full article

As civil engineering projects grow increasingly complex, ensuring pile integrity is essential for pile bearing capacity and structural safety. Pile integrity testing (PIT) has long been a focal point for researchers and engineers. With the rapid development of industrial-level advancements and artificial intelligence technology, PIT methods have undergone significant technological advancements. This paper reviews traditional PIT techniques, including low-strain integrity testing and thermal integrity profiling. The review covers the principles, advantages, limitations, and recent developments of various testing techniques. Additionally, recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) techniques, particularly in signal processing and data-driven recognition methods, are discussed. Finally, the advantages, limitations, and potential future research directions of existing methods are summarized. This paper aims to offer a systematic reference for researchers and engineers in PIT, synthesizing technical details of traditional methods and their AI-enabled advancements. Furthermore, it explores potential directions for integrating AI with PIT, with a focus on key challenges such as noisy signal interpretation and regulatory barriers in applications. Full article

Background and Objectives: Depression is a leading cause of disability globally, with treatment challenges including limited access, stigma, and poor adherence. Gamification, which applies game elements such as points, levels, and storytelling into non-game contexts, offers a promising strategy to enhance engagement and augment traditional treatments. Our research is the first study designed to explore the implementation of gamification within the Malaysian context. The objective was to explore the feasibility of implementation of gamification as an adjunctive treatment for adults with depression. Materials and Methods: Focus group discussions were held with five mental health professionals and ten patients diagnosed with moderate depression. The qualitative component assessed perceptions of gamified interventions, while quantitative measures evaluated participants’ depressive and anxiety symptomatology. Results: Three key themes were identified: (1) understanding of gamification as a treatment option, (2) factors influencing its acceptance, and (3) characteristics of a practical and feasible intervention. Clinicians saw potential in gamification to boost motivation, support psychoeducation, and encourage self-paced learning, but they expressed concerns about possible addiction, stigma, and the complexity of gameplay for some patients. Patients spoke of gaming as a source of comfort, escapism, and social connection. Acceptance was shaped by engaging storylines, intuitive design, balanced difficulty, therapist guidance, and clear safety measures. Both groups agreed that gamification should be used in conjunction with standard treatments, be culturally sensitive, and be presented as a meaningful therapeutic approach rather than merely as entertainment. Conclusions: Gamification emerges as an acceptable and feasible supplementary approach for managing depression in Malaysia. Its success depends on culturally sensitive design, robust clinical oversight, and seamless integration with existing care pathways. Future studies should investigate long-term outcomes and establish guidelines for the safe and effective implementation of this approach. We recommend targeted investment into culturally adapted gamified tools, including training, policy development, and collaboration with key stakeholders to realistically implement gamification as a mental health intervention in Malaysia. (1) Background: Fatigue impacts neuromuscular performance, especially in endurance sports like rowing. The aim is to explore how continuous workload affects explosiveness and fatigue progression. This study examines acute fatigue during repeated race events by assessing vertical jump height, force output, and subjective fatigue over three consecutive days at the 2024 Hungarian National Rowing Championships. (2) Methods: Nine rowers (five women, four men; mean age 20.17 ± 1.73 years) competed in multiple 2000 m races over three days. Lower limb explosiveness was measured via countermovement jump (CMJ) using a Kistler force plate, pre- and post-race. Heart rate data were recorded with Polar Team Pro®. Subjective fatigue was assessed using the ‘Daily Wellness Questionnaire’. (3) Results: We found a significant difference in the pattern of the medians of the force exerted by males during the jump between the results of the Thursday preliminaries (ThuQMe = 13.3) and the second final (ThuF2Me = −75.5). Women showed no notable changes. (4) Conclusion: Repeated high-intensity races induce neuromuscular fatigue in men, reflected in reduced explosiveness and increased subjective fatigue. Plastic pollution is a growing environmental and social concern, particularly in Southeast Asia, where urban rivers serve as key pathways for transporting waste to marine environments. This scoping review examines 110 peer-reviewed studies to understand how plastic pollution in waterways is being researched, addressed, and reconceptualized. Drawing from the literature across environmental science, technology, and social studies, we identify four interconnected areas of focus: urban pollution pathways, innovations in monitoring and methods, community-based interventions, and interdisciplinary perspectives. Our analysis combines qualitative synthesis with visual mapping techniques, including keyword co-occurrence networks, to explore how real-time tools, such as IoT sensors, multi-sensor systems, and geospatial technologies, are transforming the ways plastic waste is tracked and analyzed. The review also considers the growing use of novel theoretical frameworks, such as post-phenomenology and ecological materialism, to better understand the role of plastics as both pollutants and ecological agents. Despite progress, the literature reveals persistent gaps in longitudinal studies, regional representation, and policy translation, particularly across the Global South. We emphasize the value of participatory models and community-led research in bridging these gaps and advancing more inclusive and responsive solutions. These insights inform the development of plastic tracker technologies currently being piloted in Vietnam and contribute to broader sustainability goals, including SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 14 (Life Below Water). The usage of fossil fuels has resulted in increasingly severe environmental problems, such as climate change, air pollution, water pollution, etc. Hydrogen energy is considered one of the most promising clean energies to replace fossil fuels due to its pollution-free and high-heat properties. However, the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) remains a critical challenge due to its high overpotential and slow kinetics during water electrolysis for hydrogen production. Electrocatalysts play an important role in lowering the overpotential of OER and promoting the kinetics. Co3O4-based electrocatalysts have emerged as promising candidates for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) due to their favorable catalytic activity and good compatibility compared with precious metal-based electrocatalysts. This review presents a summary of the recent developments in the synthesis strategies and mechanisms of Co3O4-based electrocatalysts for the OER. Various synthesis strategies have been explored to control the size, morphology, and composition of Co3O4 nanoparticles. These strategies enable the fabrication of well-defined nanostructures with enhanced catalytic performance. Additionally, the mechanisms of OER catalysis on Co3O4-based electrocatalysts have been elucidated. Coordinatively unsaturated sites, synergistic effects with other elements, surface restructuring, and pH dependency have been identified as crucial factors influencing the catalytic activity. The understanding of these mechanisms provides insights into the design and optimization of Co3O4-based electrocatalysts for efficient OER applications. The recent advancements discussed in this review offer valuable perspectives for researchers working on the development of electrocatalysts for the OER, with the goal of achieving sustainable and efficient energy conversion and storage systems.
