Coal mining can cause the rupture of the overlying strata, and the energy released by large-scale fractures can therefore induce earthquake disasters, which in turn can cause more secondary disasters. In the past 50 years, countless earthquakes induced by coal mining have been reported. In this paper, the main factors relating to the mining-induced seismicity, including the mechanical properties, geometry of the space, excavation advance, and excavation rate, are investigated using both experimental and numerical methods. The sensitivity of these factors behaves differently with regard to the stress distribution and failure mode. Space geometry and excavation advances have the highest impact on the surface settlement and the failure, while the excavation rate in practical engineering projects has the least impact on the failure mode. The numerical study coincides well with the experimental observation. The result indicates that the mechanical properties given by the geological survey report can be effectively used to assess the risk of mining-induced seismicity, and the proper adjustment of the tunnel geometry can largely reduce the surface settlement and improve the safety of mining. This work explores the application of robotic systems in archaeology, highlighting their transformative role in excavation, documentation, and the preservation of cultural heritage. By combining technologies such as LiDAR, GIS, 3D modeling, sonar, and other sensors with autonomous and semi-autonomous platforms, archaeologists can now reach inaccessible sites, automate artifact analysis, and reconstruct fragmented remains with greater precision. The study provides a systematic overview of underwater, aerial, terrestrial, and other robotic systems, drawing on scientific literature that showcases their innovative use in both fieldwork and museum settings. Selected examples illustrate how robotics is being applied to solve key archaeological challenges in new and effective ways. While the paper emphasizes the potential of these technologies, it also addresses their technical, economic, and ethical limitations, concluding that successful adoption depends on interdisciplinary collaboration, careful implementation, and a balanced respect for cultural integrity. Urban rail transit networks’ rapid expansions have led to increasing intersections between existing and new lines, particularly in dense urban areas where new stations must underpass existing infrastructure at zero distance. Deformation controls during construction are critical for maintaining the operational safety of existing stations, especially in soft soil conditions where construction-induced settlement poses significant risks to structural integrity. This study systematically investigates the influence mechanisms of different construction schemes on base plate deformation when an open-top UBIT (underground bundle composite pipe integrated by transverse pre-stressing) underpasses existing stations. Through precise numerical simulation using PLAXIS 3D, the research comparatively analyzed the effects of 12 pipe jacking sequences, 3 pre-stress levels (1116 MPa, 1395 MPa, 1674 MPa), and 3 soil chamber excavation schemes, revealing the mechanisms between the deformation evolution and soil unloading effects. The continuous jacking strategy of adjacent pipes forms an efficient support structure, limiting maximum settlement to 5.2 mm. Medium pre-stress level (1395 MPa) produces a balanced deformation pattern that optimizes structural performance, while excavating side chambers before the central chamber effectively utilizes soil unloading effects, achieving controlled settlement distribution with maximum values of −7.2 mm. The optimal construction combination demonstrates effective deformation control, ensuring the operational safety of existing station structures. These findings enable safer and more efficient urban underpassing construction. Full article

Excavations undertaken at Mata Menge, the securely dated Middle Pleistocene open site on the Indonesian island of Flores, have resulted in the recovery of over 670 well-preserved fossil murine molars from two distinct stratigraphic intervals. This research is the first systematic metric and morphological analysis of this material, with the results indicating the predominance of a single murine species, though the finds from the lower interval (0.7 million years ago) are for the most part significantly smaller than those recovered from the ~70,000-year-younger upper interval. Comparison of our findings with the analyses of the Flores endemic recent and fossil giant rats undertaken by Hooijer in 1957 and Musser in 1981 indicates the Mata Menge large murine maxillary molars, and, in particular, those from the lower interval are very similar to the limited Middle Pleistocene material Musser designated to be Hooijeromys nusatenggara. However, the associated Mata Menge mandibular molars are most similar to, though smaller than, the mid-Holocene Papagomys theodorverhoeveni. In addition to providing a detailed reference for future studies of large fossil murines excavated from Wallacea, our findings indicate Musser’s reassignment of Hooijer’s maxillary holotype of P. verhoeveni to P. armandvillei would benefit from re-examination. The stability of the intermediate rock wall in the blasting construction of bifurcated small-spacing tunnels directly affects the construction safety of the tunnel structure. Clarifying the damage characteristics of the intermediate rock wall has significant engineering value for ensuring the safe and efficient construction of bifurcated tunnels. Based on the Tashan North Road Expressway Tunnel Project, this paper investigated the damage characteristics of the intermediate rock wall in bifurcated tunnels under different blasting construction schemes, using numerical simulation methods to account for the combined effects of in situ stress and blasting loads. The results were validated using comparisons with the measured damage depth of the surrounding rock in the ramp tunnels. The results indicate that the closer the location is to the starting point of the bifurcated tunnel, the thinner the intermediate rock wall and the more severe the damage to the surrounding rock. When the thickness of the intermediate rock wall exceeds 4.2 m, the damage zone does not penetrate through the wall. The damage to the intermediate rock wall exhibits an asymmetric “U”-shaped distribution, with greater damage on the side of the trailing tunnel at the section of the haunch and sidewall, while the opposite is true at the section of the springing. During each excavation step of the ramp and main-line tunnels, the damage to the intermediate rock wall is primarily induced by blasting loads. As construction progresses, the damage to the rock wall increases progressively under the combined effects of blasting loads and the excavation space effect. In the construction of bifurcated tunnels, the greater the distance between the headings of the leading and trailing tunnels is, the less damage will be inflicted on the intermediate rock wall. Constructing the tunnel with a larger cross-sectional area first will cause more damage to the intermediate rock wall. When the bench method is employed, an increase in the bench length leads to a reduction in the damage to the intermediate rock wall. The findings provide valuable insights for the selection of construction schemes and the protection of the intermediate rock wall when applying the bench method in the construction of bifurcated small-spacing tunnels. A systematic sensitivity analysis using three-dimensional discrete element models with discrete fracture networks (DEM-DFN) was conducted to evaluate underground excavation support in jointed rock masses at the CLAB2 site in Southeastern Sweden. The site features a joint network comprising six distinct joint sets, each with unique geometrical properties. The study examined 10 DFNs and 19 rock bolt patterns, both conventional and unconventional. It covered 200 scenarios, including 10 unsupported and 190 supported cases. Technical and economic criteria for stability were assessed for each support system. The results indicated that increasing rock bolt length enhances stability up to a certain point. However, multi-length rock bolt patterns with similar consumption can yield significantly different stability outcomes. Notably, the arrangement and properties of rock bolts are crucial for stability, particularly in blocks between bolting sections. These blocks remain interlocked in unsupported areas due to the induced pressure from supported sections. Although equal-length rock bolt patterns are commonly used, the analysis revealed that triple-length rock bolts (3, 6, and 9 m) provided the most effective support across all ten DFN scenarios. Because artificially cemented granular (ACG) materials employ diverse combinations of aggregates and binders—including cemented soil, low-cement-content cemented sand and gravel (LCSG), and concrete—their stress–strain responses vary widely. In LCSG, the binder dosage is typically limited to 40–80 kg/m3 and the sand–gravel skeleton is often obtained directly from on-site or nearby excavation spoil, endowing the material with a markedly lower embodied carbon footprint and strong alignment with current low-carbon, green-construction objectives. Yet, such heterogeneity makes a single material-specific constitutive model inadequate for predicting the mechanical behavior of other ACG variants, thereby constraining broader applications in dam construction and foundation reinforcement. This study systematically summarizes and analyzes the stress–strain and volumetric strain–axial strain characteristics of ACG materials under conventional triaxial conditions. Generalized hyperbolic and parabolic equations are employed to describe these two families of curves, and closed-form expressions are proposed for key mechanical indices—peak strength, elastic modulus, and shear dilation behavior. Building on generalized plasticity theory, we derive the plastic flow direction vector, loading direction vector, and plastic modulus, and develop a concise, transferable elastoplastic model suitable for the full spectrum of ACG materials. Validation against triaxial data for rock-fill materials, LCSG, and cemented coal–gangue backfill shows that the model reproduces the stress and deformation paths of each material class with high accuracy. Quantitative evaluation of the peak values indicates that the proposed constitutive model predicts peak deviatoric stress with an error of 1.36% and peak volumetric strain with an error of 3.78%. The corresponding coefficients of determination R2 between the predicted and measured values are 0.997 for peak stress and 0.987 for peak volumetric strain, demonstrating the excellent engineering accuracy of the proposed model. The results provide a unified theoretical basis for deploying ACG—particularly its low-cement, locally sourced variants—in low-carbon dam construction, foundation rehabilitation, and other sustainable civil engineering projects. Empirical and numerical methodologies for the geomechanical assessment of underground excavations have evolved in recent years to adapt to the geotechnical and structural conditions of natural caves, enabling stability evaluation and ensuring safe conditions for speleological exploration. This study analyzes the evolution of the state of the art of these techniques worldwide, assessing their reliability and application context, and identifying the most suitable methodologies for determining the stability of the Al-Badia lava tube. The research was conducted through bibliographic analysis and rock mass characterization using empirical geomechanical classifications. Subsequently, the numerical boundary element method (BEM) was applied to compare the obtained results and model the stress–strain behavior of the cavity. The results allowed the classification of the Al-Badia lava tube into stable, transition, and unstable zones, using empirical support charts and determining the safety factors of the surrounding rock mass. The study site highlights that empirical methods are rather conservative, and numerical results align better with observed conditions. Full article

Recently, deep learning algorithms have been increasingly applied in construction for activity recognition, particularly for excavators, to automate processes and enhance safety and productivity through continuous monitoring of earthmoving activities. These deep learning algorithms analyze construction videos to classify excavator activities for earthmoving purposes. However, previous studies have solely focused on single-source external videos, which limits the activity recognition capabilities of the deep learning algorithm. This paper introduces a novel multi-modal deep learning-based methodology for recognizing excavator activities, utilizing multi-stream input data. It processes point clouds and RGB images using the two-stream long short-term memory convolutional neural network (CNN-LSTM) method to extract spatiotemporal features, enabling the recognition of excavator activities. A comprehensive dataset comprising 495,000 video frames of synchronized RGB and point cloud data was collected across multiple construction sites under varying conditions. The dataset encompasses five key excavator activities: Approach, Digging, Dumping, Idle, and Leveling. To assess the effectiveness of the proposed method, the performance of the two-stream CNN-LSTM architecture is compared with that of single-stream CNN-LSTM models on the same RGB and point cloud datasets, separately. The results demonstrate that the proposed multi-stream approach achieved an accuracy of 94.67%, outperforming existing state-of-the-art single-stream models, which achieved 90.67% accuracy for the RGB-based model and 92.00% for the point cloud-based model. These findings underscore the potential of the proposed activity recognition method, making it highly effective for automatic real-time monitoring of excavator activities, thereby laying the groundwork for future integration into digital twin systems for proactive maintenance and intelligent equipment management. Existing risk assessment approaches for soft rock tunnels in fault-fractured zones typically employ single weighting schemes, inadequately integrate subjective and objective weights, and fail to define clear risk. This study proposes a risk-grading methodology that integrates an enhanced game theoretic weight-balancing algorithm with an optimized cloud entropy extension cloud model. Initially, a comprehensive indicator system encompassing geological (surrounding rock grade, groundwater conditions, fault thickness, dip, and strike), design (excavation cross-section shape, excavation span, and tunnel cross-sectional area), and support (support stiffness, support installation timing, and construction step length) parameters is established. Subjective weights obtained via the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) are combined with objective weights calculated using the entropy, coefficient of variation, and CRITIC methods and subsequently balanced through a game theoretic approach to mitigate bias and reconcile expert judgment with data objectivity. Subsequently, the optimized cloud entropy extension cloud algorithm quantifies the fuzzy relationships between indicators and risk levels, yielding a cloud association evaluation matrix for precise classification. A case study of a representative soft rock tunnel in a fault-fractured zone validates this method’s enhanced accuracy, stability, and rationality, offering a robust tool for risk management and design decision making in complex geological settings. The main bearing of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) is a critical component of the main driving system that enables continuous excavation, and its performance is crucial for ensuring the safe operation of the TBM. Currently, there are few testing technologies for TBM main bearings, and a comprehensive testing and evaluation system has yet to be established. This study presents an experimental investigation using a self-developed, full-scale TBM main bearing test bench. Based on a representative load spectrum, both operational condition tests and life cycle tests are conducted alternately, during which the signals of the main bearing are collected. The observed vibration signals are weak, with significant vibration attenuation occurring in the large structural components. Compared with the test bearing, which reaches a vibration amplitude of 10 g in scale tests, the difference is several orders of magnitude smaller. To effectively utilize the selected evaluation indicators, the entropy weight method is employed to assign weights to the indicators, and a comprehensive analysis is conducted using grey relational analysis. This strategy results in the development of a comprehensive evaluation method based on entropy weighting and grey relational analysis. The main bearing performance is evaluated under various working conditions and the same working conditions in different time periods. The results show that the greater the bearing load, the lower the comprehensive evaluation coefficient of bearing performance. A multistage evaluation method is adopted to evaluate the performance and condition of the main bearing across multiple working scenarios. With the increase of the test duration, the bearing performance exhibits gradual degradation, aligning with the expected outcomes. The findings demonstrate that the proposed performance evaluation method can effectively and accurately evaluate the performance of TBM main bearings, providing theoretical and technical support for the safe operation of TBMs. Full article

This paper presents the integrated study of the funerary ara of Ofilius Ianuarius, discovered within the burial complex of Via Appia Antica 39, and explores its digital stratigraphic recontextualisation through two 3D semantic workflows. The research aims to evaluate the potential of stratigraphic 3D modelling as a tool for post-excavation analysis and transparent archaeological interpretation. Starting from a set of georeferenced photogrammetric models acquired between 2023 and 2025, the study tests two workflows: (1) an EMF-based approach using the Extended Matrix, Blender, and EMviq for stratigraphic relationship modelling and online visualisation; (2) a semantic integration method using the .gltf format and the CRMArcheo Annotation Tool developed in Blender, exported to the ATON platform. While both workflows enable accurate 3D documentation, they differ in their capacity for structured semantic enrichment and interoperability. The results highlight the value of combining reality-based models with semantically linked stratigraphic proxies and suggest future directions for linking archaeological datasets, ontologies, and interactive digital platforms. This work contributes to the ongoing effort to foster transparency, reproducibility, and accessibility in virtual archaeological reconstruction. Full article

To enhance the understanding of dust diffusion laws in tunnel blasting operations of metal mines and determine optimal ventilation dust removal times, a scaled physical model of a metal mine tunneling face under the China Zijin Mining Group was established based on field measurements. Numerical simulation was employed to investigate airflow movement and dust migration in the tunneling roadway, and the fundamental features of airflow field and dust diffusion laws after tunnel blasting operations in the fully mechanized excavation face were revealed. The effects of three main factors included airflow rate (Q), ventilation distance (S), and tunnel length (L) on the dust removal time after tunnel blasting operations were investigated based on the orthogonal design method. Results indicated that reducing the dust concentration in the roadway to 10 mg/m3 required 53 min. The primary factors influencing dust removal time, in order of significance, were determined to be L, Q, and S. The lowest dust concentration occurs when the ventilation distance was 25 m. A predictive model for dust removal time after tunnel blasting operations was developed, establishing the relationship between dust removal time and the three factors as T = 20.7Q−0.73S0.19L0.86. Subsequent on-site validation confirmed the high accuracy of the predictive model, demonstrating its efficacy for practical applications. This study contributes a novel integration of orthogonal experimental design and validated CFD modeling to predict ventilation dust removal time, offering a practical and theoretically grounded approach for tunnel ventilation optimization. This study proposes a design method for near-slope roads along multi-level slopes that integrates excavation requirements and post-construction ecological restoration through sprayed eco-protection. Firstly, the design principles and procedural steps for near-slope roads are established. The planar layouts of multi-level slopes are categorized, including mixing areas, turnaround areas, berms, and access ramps. Critical technical parameters, such as curve radii and widths of berms and ramps, as well as dimensional specifications for turnaround areas, are systematically formulated with corresponding design formulas. The methodology is applied to the ecological restoration project of multi-level slopes in the Huamahu mountainous area, and a comparative technical-economic analysis is conducted between the proposed design and the original scheme. Results demonstrate that the optimized design reduces additional maintenance costs caused by near-slope roads by 6.5–8.0% during the curing period. This research advances the technical framework for multi-level slope governance and enhances the ecological design standards for slope protection engineering. Full article

Effects of Weak Structural Planes on Roadway Deformation Failure in Coastal Mines

Roadway deformation failure is often related to the presence of weak structural planes (WSPs) in the surrounding rock mass. Especially in coastal mining environments, WSP-induced deformation can create pathways that connect faults with seawater, accelerating groundwater seepage and inrush hazards. This study employs an optimized Finite–Discrete Element Method (Y-Mat) to simulate WSP-driven fracture evolution, introducing an elastoplastic failure criterion and enhanced contact force calculations. The results show that the farther the WSP is from the roadway, the lower its influence; its existence alters the shape of the plastic zone by lengthening the failure zone along the fault direction, while its angle changes the shape and location of the failure zone and deflects fracture directions, with the surrounding rock between the roadway and WSP suffering the most severe failure. The deformation failure of roadway surrounding rock is influenced by WSPs. Excavation unloading reduces the normal stress and shear strength in the weak structural plane of surrounding rock, resulting in slip and deformation. Additionally, WSP-induced fractures act as groundwater influx conduits, especially in fault-proximal roadways or where crack angles align with hydraulic gradients, so mitigation in water-rich mining environments should prioritize sealing these pathways. The results provide a theoretical basis for roadway excavation and support engineering under the influence of WSPs. Full article
