Understanding what people think about hydrogen energy and how this influences their acceptance of the associated technology is a critical area of research. The public’s willingness to adopt practical applications of hydrogen energy, such as hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles (HFCVs), is a key factor in their deployment. To analyse the direct and indirect effects of key attitudinal variables that could influence the intention to use HFCVs in Spain, an online questionnaire was administered to a representative sample of the Spanish population (N = 1000). A path analysis Structural Equation Model (SEM) was applied to determine the effect of different attitudinal variables. A high intention to adopt HFCVs in Spain was found (3.8 out of 5), assuming their wider availability in the future. The path analysis results indicated that general acceptance of hydrogen technology and perception of its benefits had the greatest effect on the public’s intention to adopt HFCVs. Regarding indirect effects, the role of trust in hydrogen technology was notable, having significant mediating effects not only through general acceptance of hydrogen energy and local acceptance of hydrogen refuelling stations (HRS), but also through positive and negative emotions and benefits perception. The findings will assist in focusing the future hydrogen communication strategies of both the government and the private (business) sector. Full article

Background/Objectives: Daily caloric restriction (DCR) is a common dietary weight loss strategy, but leads to metabolic and behavioral adaptations, including maladaptive eating behaviors and dysregulated appetite. Intermittent fasting (IMF) may mitigate these effects by offering diet flexibility during energy restriction. This secondary analysis compared changes in eating behaviors and appetite-related hormones between 4:3 intermittent fasting (4:3 IMF) and DCR and examined their association with weight loss over 12 months. Methods: Adults with overweight or obesity were randomized to 4:3 IMF or DCR for 12 months. Both randomized groups received a matched targeted weekly dietary energy deficit (34%), comprehensive group-based behavioral support, and a prescription to increase moderate-intensity aerobic activity to 300 min/week. Eating behaviors were assessed using validated questionnaires at baseline and months 3, 6, and 12. Fasting levels of leptin, ghrelin, peptide YY, brain-derived neurotrophic factor, and adiponectin were measured at baseline and months 6 and 12. Linear mixed models and Pearson correlations were used to evaluate outcomes. Results: Included in this analysis were 165 adults (mean ± SD; age 42 ± 9 years, BMI 34.2 ± 4.3 kg/m2, 74% female) randomized to 4:3 IMF (n = 84) or DCR (n = 81). At 12 months, binge eating and uncontrolled eating scores decreased in 4:3 IMF but increased in DCR (p < 0.01 for between-group differences). Among 4:3 IMF, greater weight loss was associated with decreased uncontrolled eating (r = −0.27, p = 0.03), emotional eating (r = −0.37, p < 0.01), and increased cognitive restraint (r = 0.35, p < 0.01) at 12 months. There were no between-group differences in changes in fasting appetite-related hormones at any time point. Conclusions: Compared to DCR, 4:3 IMF exhibited improved binge eating and uncontrolled eating behaviors at 12 months. This may, in part, explain the greater weight loss achieved by 4:3 IMF versus DCR. Future studies should examine mechanisms underlying eating behavior changes with 4:3 IMF and their long-term sustainability. Full article

This study investigates how lighting conditions influence emotional and neural responses in a standardized, simulated museum environment. A multimodal evaluation framework combining subjective and objective measures was used. Thirty-two international students assessed their viewing experiences using 14 semantic differential descriptors, while real-time EEG signals were recorded via the EMOTIV EPOC X device. Spectral energy analyses of the α, β, and θ frequency bands were conducted, and a θα energy ratio combined with γ coefficients was used to model attention and comfort levels. The results indicated that high illuminance (300 lx) and high correlated color temperature (4000 K) significantly enhanced both attention and comfort. Art majors showed higher attention levels than engineering majors during short-term viewing. Among four regression models, the backpropagation (BP) neural network achieved the highest predictive accuracy (R2 = 88.65%). These findings provide empirical support for designing culturally inclusive museum lighting and offer neuroscience-informed strategies for promoting the global dissemination of traditional Chinese culture, further supported by retrospective interview insights. Objective: There is growing interest in analyzing whether ethical climates influence the emotional states of organizational members. For this reason, the main objective of this study is to evaluate the relationship between a benevolent ethical climate, emotional exhaustion, and depersonalization, taking into account the mediating effect of job autonomy. Methodology: To evaluate the research hypotheses, data were collected from 448 people belonging to six organizations in the Colombian electricity sector. Statistical analysis was performed using two structural equation models (SEMs). Results: The results show that a benevolent climate and its three dimensions (friendship, group interest, and corporate social responsibility) mitigate the negative effect of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization. A work environment focused on people and society triggers positive moods that prevent the loss of valuable psychological resources. On the other hand, job autonomy is a mechanism that has a direct impact on the emotional well-being of employees. Therefore, being able to intentionally direct one’s own sources of energy and motivation prevents an imbalance between resources and demands that blocks the potential effect of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization. Practical implications: This study has important practical implications. First, an ethical climate that seeks to build a caring environment needs to strengthen emotional communication among employees through a high perception of support. Second, organizations need to grow and achieve strategic objectives from a perspective of solidarity. Third, a benevolent ethical climate needs to be nurtured by professionals with a clear vocation for service and a preference for interacting with people. Finally, job autonomy must be accompanied by the necessary time management skills. Social implications: This study highlights the importance to society of an ethical climate based on friendship, group interest, and corporate social responsibility. In a society with a marked tendency to disengage from collective problems, it is essential to make decisions that take into account the well-being of others. Originality/value: This research responds to recent calls for more studies to identify organizational contexts capable of mitigating the negative effects of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization. Background: While some evidence supports the benefits of food-related tasks, research examining their association with psychosocial health in adolescents remains scarce. The aim of this study was to examine the association between Spanish adolescents’ involvement in food-related household tasks and their psychosocial health. Methods: This cross-sectional study used secondary data from the original Eating Healthy and Daily Life Activities (EHDLA) study. The final sample comprised 273 boys (43.0%) and 361 girls (57.0%). Adolescents self-reported their weekly frequency of involvement in two food-related tasks: meal preparation and grocery shopping, with responses ranging from ‘never’ to ‘seven times’. Psychosocial health was assessed using the 25-item self-report version of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), comprising five subscales: emotional problems, conduct problems, hyperactivity, peer problems, and prosocial behavior. A total difficulties score was calculated by summing the first four subscales. Generalized linear models were used to evaluate associations between the frequency of food task involvement (categorized into five levels) and SDQ outcomes. All models were adjusted for age, sex, socioeconomic status, body mass index, sleep duration, physical activity, sedentary behavior, and energy intake. Results: Concerning to the frequency of helping to prepare food for dinner, an inverse association was observed between food preparation involvement and several psychosocial problems. Adolescents who helped seven times per week reported significantly lower scores in conduct problems (B = −2.00; 95% CI −3.30 to −0.69; p = 0.003), peer problems (B = −2.83; 95% CI −4.29 to −1.38; p < 0.001), internalizing problems (B = −3.90; 95% CI −7.03 to −0.77; p = 0.015), and total psychosocial difficulties (B = −5.74; 95% CI −10.68 to −0.80; p = 0.023), compared to those who never helped. Conversely, those who helped seven times per week had higher prosocial behavior than their counterparts who never helped (B = 1.69; 95% CI: 0.14 to 3.24; p = 0.033). Regarding the frequency of helping to shop for food, similar patterns were found, with lower conduct problems (B = −2.11; 95% CI −3.42 to −0.81; p = 0.002), peer problems (B = −2.88; 95% CI −4.34 to −1.42; p < 0.001), internalizing problems (B = −4.16; 95% CI −7.28 to −1.04; p = 0.009), and total psychosocial difficulties (B = −6.31; 95% CI −11.24 to −1.39; p = 0.012) associated with more frequent involvement, especially among those who helped five or more times per week. Conversely, adolescents who helped seven times per week had higher prosocial behavior than their peers who never helped (B = 1.56; 95% CI: 0.01 to 3.11; p = 0.049). Conclusions: Although adolescent psychosocial health is influenced by multiple factors, our findings suggest that regular involvement in food-related household tasks may serve as a protective factor against conduct problems, peer problems, internalizing problems, and total difficulties, while also enhancing prosocial behavior. However, given the cross-sectional design, conclusions regarding causality should be made cautiously, and further longitudinal research is needed to confirm these associations and assess their long-term impact. These results highlight the relevance of daily structured routines, such as meal preparation and grocery shopping, as potential support for mental well-being during adolescence. Full article

The modern workplace grapples with a human energy crisis, characterized by chronic exhaustion, disengagement, and emotional depletion among employees. Traditional well-being initiatives often fail to address this systemic challenge, particularly in industrial contexts. This study introduces the Human Energy Management System (HEMS), a strategic framework to develop, implement, and refine strategies for optimizing workforce energy. Grounded in Industry 5.0’s human-centric, resilient, and sustainable principles, HEMS integrates enterprise risk management (ERM), design thinking, and the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle. Employing a qualitative Design Science Research (DSR) methodology, the study reframes human energy depletion as an organizational risk, providing a proactive, empathetic, and iterative approach to mitigate workplace stressors. The HEMS framework is developed and evaluated through theoretical modeling, literature benchmarking, and secondary case studies, rather than empirical testing, aligning with DSR’s focus on conceptual validation. Findings suggest HEMS offers a robust tool to operationalize human energy reinforcement strategies in industrial settings. Consistent with the European Union’s vision for human-centric industrial transformation, HEMS enables organizations to foster a resilient, engaged, and thriving workforce in both stable and challenging times. Background/Objectives: Emotion and cognition, two essential components of human mental processes, have traditionally been studied independently. The exploration of emotion and cognition is fundamental for gaining an understanding of human mental functioning. Despite the availability of various methods to measure and evaluate emotional states and cognitive processes, physiological measurements are considered to be one of the most reliable methods due to their objective approach. In particular, electroencephalography (EEG) provides unique insight into emotional and cognitive activity through the analysis of event-related potentials (ERPs). In this study, we discriminated pleasant/unpleasant emotional moods and low/high cognitive states using graph-theoretic features extracted from spatio-temporal components. Methods: Emotional data were collected at the Physiology Department of Istanbul Medical Faculty at Istanbul University, whereas cognitive data were obtained from the DepositOnce repository of Technische Universität Berlin. Wavelet coherence values for the N100, N200, and P300 single-trial ERP components in the delta, theta, alpha, and beta frequency bands were investigated individually. Then, graph-theoretic analyses were performed using wavelet coherence-based connectivity maps. Global and local graph metrics such as energy efficiency, strength, transitivity, characteristic path length, and clustering coefficient were used as features for classification using support vector machines (SVMs), k-nearest neighbor(K-NN), and linear discriminant analysis (LDA). Results: The results show that both pleasant/unpleasant emotional moods and low/high cognitive states can be discriminated, with average accuracies of up to 92% and 89%, respectively. Conclusions: Graph-theoretic metrics based on wavelet coherence of ERP components in the delta band with the SVM algorithm allow for the discrimination of emotional and cognitive states with high accuracy. Returning to work after extended holidays poses significant challenges to employees’ psychological adjustment, yet this phenomenon remains underexplored in organizational research. Drawing on the Conservation of Resources (COR) theory, this study develops and tests a moderated mediation model to examine how pre-holiday work-related irritation influences post-holiday workplace vigor through heightened need for recovery, and how perceived organizational support buffers this process. Data were collected through a four-wave time-lagged design surrounding the Chinese Spring Festival, with a final sample of 349 employees across diverse industries. Results show that pre-holiday emotional strain increases employees’ recovery needs, which in turn undermines their workplace vigor. Moreover, boundary strength at home and perceived organizational support buffer the indirect negative pathway, highlighting the critical roles of both personal and organizational resources in the recovery process. By shifting attention from burnout to positive energy states such as vigor, this study advances theoretical understanding of post-holiday adjustment dynamics and offers practical insights for organizations seeking to foster employee resilience and sustained engagement after structured breaks. Background/Objectives: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) etiology is complex, involving genetics and environmental factors, and associated with impaired energy metabolism. Mitochondrial fatty acid oxidation (mFAO) is instrumental to energy production through the oxidation of acylcarnitines (ACs). We performed a comprehensive investigation of blood AC profiles in a pediatric ASD cohort, aiming to define ASD subgroups based on AC profiles and link these profiles to key clinical features and comorbidities using a phenotype-first approach. Methods: Blood levels of 31 ACs (μmol/L) collected from 102 ASD patients and 117 healthy controls (HCs) were evaluated via tandem mass spectrometry. The percentile distribution of blood AC levels in HC samples was computed to define the normal reference range (RR) and identify values corresponding to the 10th and 90th percentiles. Cognitive levels, emotional–behavioral disturbances and the severity of ASD symptoms (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule-Calibrated Severity Score ADOS-CSS) were assessed. Clinical correlates of ASD groups based on AC profiles were evaluated. Results: Three ASD subgroups were identified based on the percentile distribution of AC levels: group A (ACs < 10th percentile), group B (ACs 10th–90th percentile) and group C (ACs > 90th percentile) (abnormal AC number ≥ 3). Out of the thirty-one analyzed ACs in DBSs, fifteen (48.4%) were significantly different when comparing ASD group A to ASD group C. There was a significant difference in the severity of autism symptoms (ADOS CSS) related to the repetitive and restricted behaviors domain (CSS RRB) among the different groups (χ2(2) = 6.26; p = 0.044). The post hoc Dunn’s test with Bonferroni correction showed that ADOS-CSS RRB was significantly higher in ASD group A compared to ASD group B (p = 0.013). AC C14 was more frequently decreased (<10th pc) in patients with more severe symptoms (p = 0.006); C10:1 tended to be more frequently increased (>90th pc) in patients with lower clinical severity (p = 0.052). Conclusions: This study highlights differences across blood AC levels in children with ASD and conveys novel information on clinical severity in ASD patients with abnormal blood AC profiles. Thus, examining metabolic profiles may provide helpful insights to understand the variability of ASD symptoms. Full article

Collaboration with artificial intelligence (AI) not only improves employees’ work efficiency but also provides them with opportunities to participate in other behaviors. Among the various behaviors that have garnered the attention of organizations, cyberloafing has historically been a focus. Drawing from social identity theory (SIT), this research examines how human–AI collaboration diminishes cyberloafing by fostering AI identity (dependence, emotional energy, relatedness). A three-wave study (N = 381) revealed that AI collaboration strengthened employees’ AI identity, enabling them to recognize their identity as AI collaborators and focus on in-role tasks, thereby reducing cyberloafing. Moreover, the research suggested that openness served as a moderating factor, further amplifying the positive relationship between human–AI collaboration and AI identity. Specifically, employees who exhibit higher levels of openness are more likely to demonstrate heightened AI identity and reduced cyberloafing. Conversely, employees with low openness exhibit less AI identity and more cyberloafing. This research employs SIT in the context of AI collaboration, thereby providing a theoretical foundation and practical guidance for reducing employee cyberloafing in the workplace and promoting organizational development. This study investigates Spanish-language public discourse on YouTube following the unprecedented Iberian Peninsula blackout of 28 April 2025. Leveraging comments extracted via the YouTube Data API and analyzed with the OpenAI GPT-4o-mini model, it systematically examined 76,398 comments from 360 of the most relevant videos posted on the day of the event. The analysis explored emotional responses, sentiment trends, misinformation prevalence, civic engagement, and attributions of blame within the immediate aftermath of the blackout. The results reveal a discourse dominated by negativity and anger, with 43% of comments classified as angry and an overall negative sentiment trend. Misinformation was pervasive, present in 46% of comments, with most falsehoods going unchallenged. The majority of users attributed the blackout to government or political failures rather than technical causes, reflecting a profound distrust in institutions. Notably, while one in five comments included a call to action, only a minority offered constructive solutions, focusing mainly on infrastructure and energy reform. These findings highlight the crucial role of multilingual, real-time crisis communication and the unique information needs of Spanish-speaking populations during emergencies. By illuminating how rumors, emotions, and calls for accountability manifest in digital spaces, this study contributes to the literature on crisis informatics, digital resilience, and inclusive sustainability policy. The aim of this article is to critically and reliably assess the potential of current emotion recognition technologies for practical applications in human–computer interaction (HCI) systems. The study made use of two databases: one in English (RAVDESS) and another in Polish (EMO-BAJKA), both containing speech recordings expressing various emotions. The effectiveness of recognizing seven and eight different emotions was analyzed. A range of acoustic features, including energy features, mel-cepstral features, zero-crossing rate, fundamental frequency, and spectral features, were utilized to analyze the emotions in speech. Machine learning techniques such as convolutional neural networks (CNNs), long short-term memory (LSTM) networks, and support vector machines with a cubic kernel (cubic SVMs) were employed in the emotion classification task. The research findings indicated that the effective recognition of a broad spectrum of emotions in a subject-independent approach is limited. However, significantly better results were obtained in the classification of paired emotions, suggesting that emotion recognition technologies could be effectively used in specific applications where distinguishing between two particular emotional states is essential. To ensure a reliable and accurate assessment of the emotion recognition system, care was taken to divide the dataset in such a way that the training and testing data contained recordings of completely different individuals. The highest classification accuracies for pairs of emotions were achieved for Angry–Fearful (0.8), Angry–Happy (0.86), Angry–Neutral (1.0), Angry–Sad (1.0), Angry–Surprise (0.89), Disgust–Neutral (0.91), and Disgust–Sad (0.96) in the RAVDESS. In the EMO-BAJKA database, the highest classification accuracies for pairs of emotions were for Joy–Neutral (0.91), Surprise–Neutral (0.80), Surprise–Fear (0.91), and Neutral–Fear (0.91). Objective: This narrative review aims to analyze physical activity as a central pillar of lifestyle modification in the management of chronic musculoskeletal pain by examining its effects on pain modulation as well as related lifestyle domains, including sleep, stress regulation, dietary habits, and smoking behavior. Methods: A narrative structured review was conducted. We searched MEDLINE/PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Reviews using terms related to chronic pain and lifestyle. Randomized controlled trials, observational studies, systematic reviews, and narrative reviews reporting on the concepts of interest were included. The results were synthesized and described narratively. Results: Through the release of neuromodulatory compounds such as endorphins, endocannabinoids, dopamine, and serotonin, exercise improves analgesia, promotes emotional resilience, and reduces the reward response associated with addictive behaviors such as smoking. Its effects on the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis reduce cortisol levels, while melatonin regulation promotes circadian synchronization and deeper sleep stages. In addition, exercise modulates appetite by increasing insulin sensitivity and altering hormones such as leptin and ghrelin, contributing to appetite control and energy balance. These mechanisms support a comprehensive approach to chronic pain management. Conclusions: Physical activity is a core component of lifestyle-based chronic pain management, not only because of its analgesic effects, but also because of its positive influence on sleep, stress regulation, dietary habits, and smoking reduction. Although the available evidence is promising, more randomized controlled trials are needed to examine the effects of exercise on other healthy lifestyle behaviors, such as stress reduction, dietary modification, and smoking cessation, to consolidate its role in the comprehensive prevention and management of chronic pain. Climate change (CC) is one of the most urgent challenges of our time. Research suggests that pro-environmental behaviors (PEB) are essential to address this crisis, encompassing sustainable consumption (e.g., recycling or saving energy) and active participation (e.g., protesting or donating). In this regard, young adults play a significant role as change agents. Considering the previous literature affirming the importance of CC emotions on PEB, this study aims to analyze the mediating role of eco-worry and eco-anxiety in the relationship between two cognitive antecedents (general willingness to behave pro-environmentally and CC agency) and two types of PEB (sustainable consumption and active participation). To do so, we gathered a sample of 308 young adults aged 18 to 30 years. Results show that eco-worry mediates the relationships between both antecedents (willingness and CC agency) with sustainable consumption and active participation. In contrast, eco-anxiety in young adults only mediates the relationship between CC agency and active participation. Our findings suggest that eco-worry plays a crucial role in promoting PEB more broadly, while eco-anxiety appears to be only relevant in influencing active participation. These results contrast with others observed in the adult population, so further studies are needed to confirm these findings. Full article

Background: Patients suffering from severe COVID-19 often develop acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), necessitating intensive care unit (ICU) and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). Survivors frequently experience negative impacts on their health-related quality of life. These individuals may experience a range of symptoms and may require extended hospitalization and rehabilitation. The objective of this prospective cohort study was to assess the long-term health-related quality of life in intensive care survivors of COVID-19-related ARDS who received ECMO therapy, >18 months after their ICU discharge. Methods: The health-related quality of life of COVID-19 survivors who had received extracorporeal membrane oxygenation was evaluated using an augmented version of the Short-Form Health Survey-36, >18 months after their ICU discharge. The outcomes were compared to preexisting data from a meta-analysis analyzing patients with non-COVID-19 ARDS and ECMO therapy. Results: Of the 43 eligible patients (mean age 52 ± 9.5 years), 18 patients (46.2%) responded to the written invitation and were included in this study. The four subscales of the Short-Form Health Survey-36 survey, performed via telephone interview, that showed the most severe limitations (points) were role limitation due to physical problems (37.5), emotional problems (47.9), social functioning (38.1), and general health (49.2). The general health, energy/fatigue (vitality), and physical functioning significantly correlated with higher age (p = 0.004, p = 0.003, and p = 0.05, respectively). A longer duration of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation was positively associated with an improved energy/fatigue ratio (vitality) and emotional well-being (p = 0.04 and p = 0.02, respectively). Compared to survivors of non-COVID-19 ARDS treated with ECMO, the survivors in our cohort scored significantly lower on social functioning, physical functioning, and general health (p < 0.01, p = 0.02, p < 0.01). Conclusions: Patients who have recovered from intensive care treatment for COVID-19-related ARDS and have received ECMO therapy continue to experience more severe impairments in their physical, mental, and cognitive health-related quality of life. A longer ECMO duration may improve outcomes in this selected patient population. Full article
