This study used the Q methodology to examine how Korean science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) students perceive the experience of reading classical texts and how such experiences relate to their overall well-being. We developed 31 statements for the Q-sorting process and collected data from 39 undergraduate students majoring in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The analysis identified three distinct perception types: type 1—exploratory type, which broadens thinking through diverse perspectives, type 2—experience type, which shares achievement and enjoyment through reading together, and type 3—insight type, which seeks universal values and truth. These findings suggest that, for science and engineering students, reading classics offers a multidimensional experience—encompassing intellectual expansion, relational engagement, and philosophical reflection—beyond conventional academic activities. In particular, the therapeutic dimension of reading, as discussed in bibliotherapy, has emerged as a mechanism that supports self-reflection and emotional resilience. Although each type approached classical reading differently, the participants demonstrated varied perceptions that reflect dimensions of well-being, such as emotional awareness, relational connection, and self-reflection, as expressed through the Q-sorting of pre-defined statements. Based on these results, this study concludes that classical reading can function as a significant mechanism for promoting well-being, offering new directions and practical implications for classical reading education. WAIS-IV Cognitive Profiles in Italian University Students with Dyslexia

This study investigated the cognitive profiles of Italian university students with dyslexia using the WAIS-IV, comparing them to peers without specific learning disorders. Seventy-one participants took part: 36 with a diagnosis of dyslexia and 35 matched controls. While dyslexic adults showed lower Full Scale IQ (FSIQ) scores compared to controls, their scores remained within the average range. They showed deficits in Working Memory Index (WMI) and Processing Speed Index (PSI) but performed similarly to controls in Verbal Comprehension Index (VCI) and Perceptual Reasoning Index (PRI). Significant group differences also emerged in Arithmetic Reasoning, Symbol Search, and Coding subtests. Logistic regression identified WMI and PSI as the most reliable predictors of dyslexia, showing a good predictive value in discriminating between adults with and without dyslexia. Additionally, dyslexic adults displayed lower Cognitive Proficiency Index (CPI) scores relative to their General Ability Index (GAI), and lower FSIQ scores compared to controls. Overall, dyslexic adults exhibit a distinctive cognitive profile with strengths and weaknesses. This pattern can aid in dyslexia diagnosis, particularly in individuals who have compensated through extensive reading experience in a highly regular orthography. Full article

Machine Learning for Personalized Prediction of Electrocardiogram (EKG) Use in Emergency Care

Background: Electrocardiograms (EKGs) are essential tools in emergency medicine, often used to evaluate chest pain, dyspnea, and other symptoms suggestive of cardiac dysfunction. Yet, EKGs are not universally administered to all emergency department (ED) patients. Understanding and predicting which patients receive an EKG may offer insights into clinical decision making, resource allocation, and potential disparities in care. This study examines whether integrating structured clinical data with free-text patient narratives can improve prediction of EKG utilization in the ED. Methods: We conducted a retrospective observational study to predict electrocardiogram (EKG) utilization using data from 13,115 adult emergency department (ED) visits in the nationally representative 2021 National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey–Emergency Department (NHAMCS-ED), leveraging both structured features—demographics, vital signs, comorbidities, arrival mode, and triage acuity, with the most influential selected via Lasso regression—and unstructured patient narratives transformed into numerical embeddings using Clinical-BERT. Four supervised learning models—Logistic Regression (LR), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Random Forest (RF) and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGB)—were trained on three inputs (structured data only, text embeddings only, and a late-fusion combined model); hyperparameters were optimized by grid search with 5-fold cross-validation; performance was evaluated via AUROC, accuracy, sensitivity, specificity and precision; and interpretability was assessed using SHAP values and Permutation Feature Importance. Results: EKGs were administered in 30.6% of adult ED visits. Patients who received EKGs were more likely to be older, White, Medicare-insured, and to present with abnormal vital signs or higher triage severity. Across all models, the combined data approach yielded superior predictive performance. The SVM and LR achieved the highest area under the ROC curve (AUC = 0.860 and 0.861) when using both structured and unstructured data, compared to 0.772 with structured data alone and 0.823 and 0.822 with unstructured data alone. Similar improvements were observed in accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity. Conclusions: Integrating structured clinical data with patient narratives significantly enhances the ability to predict EKG utilization in the emergency department. These findings support a personalized medicine framework by demonstrating how multimodal data integration can enable individualized, real-time decision support in the ED. Full article

The growing concern over environmental sustainability has intensified the focus on consumers’ perceptions of eco-friendly food packaging, especially among younger generations. This study aims to investigate the attitudes, preferences, and barriers faced by Greek university students regarding sustainable food packaging, a demographic considered pivotal for driving future consumption trends. An online questionnaire assessing perceptions, preferences, and behaviours related to sustainable packaging was administered to students, with responses measured on a five-point Likert scale. Three hundred and sixty-four students took part in this survey, with the majority (60%) of them being female. Principal component analysis was employed to identify underlying factors influencing perceptions, and k-means cluster analysis revealed two consumer segments: “Innovatives”, including one hundred and ninety-eight participants (54%), who demonstrate strong environmental awareness and willingness to adopt sustainable behaviours, and “Sceptics”, including one hundred sixty-six participants (46%), who show moderate engagement and remain cautious in their choices. Convenience, affordability, and clear product communication emerged as significant factors shaping student preferences. The findings suggest that targeted educational campaigns and transparent information are essential to converting positive attitudes into consistent purchasing behaviours. This research provides valuable insights for policymakers and marketers looking to design effective sustainability strategies tailored to the student population. Full article

The emergence of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in higher education offers new opportunities for academic support while also raising complex ethical concerns. This study explores how university students ethically evaluate the use of GenAI in three academic contexts: improving essay writing, preparing for exams, and generating complete essays without personal input. Drawing on the Multidimensional Ethics Scale (MES), the research assesses five philosophical frameworks—moral equity, relativism, egoism, utilitarianism, and deontology—based on a survey conducted among undergraduate social sciences students in Spain. The findings reveal that students generally view GenAI use as ethically acceptable when used to improve or prepare content, but express stronger ethical concerns when authorship is replaced by automation. Gender and full-time employment status also influence ethical evaluations: women respond differently than men in utilitarian dimensions, while working students tend to adopt a more relativist stance and are more tolerant of full automation. These results highlight the importance of context, individual characteristics, and philosophical orientation in shaping ethical judgments about GenAI use in academia. Full article

This study explores the migration intentions of university students—representing the potential creative class—in Erzurum, a medium-sized city in eastern Turkey experiencing shrinkage. Within the theoretical framework of shrinking cities, it investigates how economic, social, physical, and personal factors influence students’ post-graduation stay or leave decisions. Survey data from 742 Architecture and Fine Arts students at Atatürk University were analyzed using factor analysis, logistic regression, and correlation to identify key migration drivers. Findings reveal that, in addition to economic concerns such as limited job opportunities and low income, personal development opportunities and social engagement also play a decisive role. In particular, the perception of limited chances for skill enhancement and the belief that Erzurum is not a good place to meet people emerged as the strongest predictors of migration intentions. These results suggest that members of the creative class are influenced not only by economic incentives but also by broader urban experiences related to self-growth and social connectivity. This study highlights spatial inequalities in access to cultural, educational, and social infrastructure, raising important questions about spatial justice in shrinking urban contexts. This paper contributes to the literature on shrinking cities by highlighting creative youth in mid-sized Global South cities. It suggests smart shrinkage strategies focused on creative sector development, improved quality of life, and inclusive planning to retain young talent and support sustainable urban revitalization. This study investigates the relationship between the dynamic capabilities of university administration and students’ awareness of artificial intelligence (AI) tools within a higher education context. Drawing on data from 139 students at the College of Education, Sultan Qaboos University, the research employed two validated instruments, one measuring the dynamic capabilities of university administration and another assessing students’ awareness and perception of AI tool use. Understanding this relationship is critical, as universities increasingly face pressure to guide responsible and effective AI use among students. Findings reveal significant correlations between the university administration’s dynamic capabilities, particularly technological agility, and students’ engagement with AI tools. Notably, technological dynamic capabilities within the administration significantly predicted two specific dimensions of student awareness: effectiveness of using AI tools and perceived faculty members’ efficiency in AI. These results highlight the critical role of institutional leadership in promoting equitable and sustainable integration of AI in education. The study contributes to the broader discourse on AI for sustainable development by illustrating how institutional strategies can enhance innovation, inclusion, and student readiness in support of SDG 4. With deepening global higher education reforms, outcome-based education has emerged as the core paradigm for teaching model innovation. This study investigates the structural dependencies and teaching effectiveness of the Environmental Design curriculum at Hubei Engineering University in medium-sized cities, China, addressing challenges of enrollment decline and market contraction critical for urban sustainability. Using network analysis, we construct curriculum support and contribution networks and course temporal networks to assess structural dependencies and teaching effectiveness, revealing structural patterns and optimizing the OBE-based Environmental Design curriculum to enhance educational quality and student competencies. Analysis reveals computer basic courses as knowledge transmission hubs, creating a course network with a distinct core–periphery structure. Technical course reforms significantly outperform theoretical course reforms in improving student performance metrics, such as higher average scores, better grade distributions, and reduced performance gaps, while innovative practice courses show peripheral isolation patterns, indicating limited connectivity with core curriculum modules, which reduces their educational impact. These findings provide empirical insights for curriculum optimization, supporting urban sustainable development through enhanced professional talent cultivation equipped to address environmental challenges like sustainable design practices and resource-efficient urban planning. Network analysis applications introduce innovative frameworks for curriculum reform strategies. Future research expansion through larger sample validation will support urban sustainable development goals and enhance professional talent cultivation outcomes. Full article

This study investigates the critical capabilities and integration mechanisms that enable organizations to achieve substantive sustainability transformations. Using a mixed-methods approach combining survey data (n = 234), in-depth interviews (n = 42), and comparative case studies (n = 6), the research identifies how organizations effectively navigate sustainability paradoxes while developing integration practices that embed sustainability throughout organizational systems. Our research is primarily grounded in paradox theory, complemented by insights from organizational learning theory, institutional logics, and power dynamics perspectives to develop a comprehensive theoretical framework. Statistical analysis reveals strong relationships between paradox navigation capabilities and transformation outcomes (β = 0.31, p < 0.01), with integration practices emerging as the strongest predictor of sustainability success (β = 0.42, p < 0.01). Qualitative findings illuminate four essential integration mechanisms—governance integration, strategic integration, operational integration, and performance integration—and their temporal development. The significant interaction between power mobilization and integration practices (β = 0.19, p < 0.01) demonstrates that structural interventions are insufficient without attention to power relationships. The research contributes to sustainability science by advancing theory on paradoxical tensions in transformation processes, demonstrating how organizations can transcend the gap between sustainability rhetoric and substantive action through both structural integration and power-conscious approaches. By identifying contextual contingencies across sectors and organizational types, the study challenges universal prescriptions for sustainability transformation, offering instead a nuanced framework for creating organizational conditions conducive to context-specific transformation toward more sustainable futures. Our findings offer practical guidance for organizations navigating the complex landscape of sustainability transformation and contribute to the implementation of UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). Background: Accurate estimation of the postmortem interval (PMI) is critical in forensic death investigations. Traditional signs of death—algor mortis, livor mortis, and rigor mortis—are generally reliable only within the first two to three days after death, with their accuracy decreasing as decomposition progresses. This paper presents a systematic review conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines, aiming to evaluate and compare current methods for estimating the PMI. Specifically, the study identifies both traditional and modern techniques, analyzes their advantages, limitations, and applicable timeframes, critically synthesizes the literature, and highlights the importance of combining multiple approaches to improve accuracy. Methods: A systematic search was conducted in the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases, following the PRISMA guidelines. The review included original articles and reviews that evaluated PMI estimation methods (through thanatological signs, entomology, microbial succession, molecular, imaging, and omics approaches). Extracted data included study design, methodology, PMI range, and accuracy information. Out of the 1245 identified records, 50 studies met the inclusion criteria for qualitative synthesis. Results: Emerging methods, such as molecular markers, microbial succession, omics technologies, and advanced imaging show improved accuracy across extended postmortem intervals. RNA degradation methods demonstrated higher accuracy within the first 72 h, while entomology and microbial analysis are more applicable during intermediate and late decomposition stages. Although no single method is universally reliable, combining traditional and modern approaches tailored to case-specific factors improves overall PMI estimation accuracy. Conclusions: This study supports the use of an integrative, multidisciplinary, and evidence-based approach to improve time-since-death estimation. Such a strategy enhances forensic outcomes by enabling more precise PMI estimates in complex or delayed cases, increasing legal reliability, and supporting court-admissible expert testimony based on validated, multi-method protocols. Conventional immunotherapy, including immune checkpoint blockade and chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T cells, has revolutionized cancer therapy over the past decade. Yet, the efficacy of these therapies is limited by tumor resistance, antigen escape mechanisms, poor persistence, and T-cell exhaustion, particularly in the treatment of solid tumors. The emergence of unconventional immunotherapies offers novel opportunities by leveraging diverse immune cell subsets and synthetic biologics. This review explores various immunotherapy platforms, including gamma delta T cells, invariant natural killer T cells, mucosal-associated invariant T cells, engineered regulatory T cells, and universal CAR platforms. Additionally, it expands on biologics, including bispecific and multispecific antibodies, cytokine fusions, agonists, and oncolytic viruses, showcasing their potential for modular engineering and off-the-shelf applicability. Distinct features of unconventional platforms include independence from the major histocompatibility complex (MHC), tissue-homing capabilities, stress ligand sensing, and the ability to bridge adaptive and innate immunity. Their compatibility with engineering approaches highlights their potential as scalable, efficient, and cost-effective therapies. To overcome translational challenges such as functional heterogeneity, immune exhaustion, tumor microenvironment-mediated suppression, and limited persistence, novel strategies will be discussed, including metabolic and epigenetic reprogramming, immune cloaking, gene editing, and the utilization of artificial intelligence for patient stratification. Ultimately, unconventional immunotherapies extend the therapeutic horizon of cancer immunotherapy by breaking barriers in solid tumor treatment and increasing accessibility. Continued investments in research for mechanistic insights and scalable manufacturing are key to unlocking their full clinical potential. Full article

This deterioration is primarily driven by cumulative cellular damage arising from both intrinsic and extrinsic stressors. The free radical theory of aging, first proposed by Denham Harman in 1956, highlights the role of reactive oxygen species (ROS), byproducts of normal metabolism, in driving oxidative stress and age-related degeneration. Emerging evidence emphasizes the importance of redox imbalance in the onset of neurodegenerative diseases and aging. Among the critical cellular defenses against oxidative stress are sulfur-containing amino acids, namely cysteine (Cys) and selenocysteine (Sec). Cysteine serves as a precursor for glutathione (GSH), a central intracellular antioxidant, while selenocysteine is incorporated into key antioxidant enzymes such as glutathione peroxidases (GPx) and thioredoxin reductases (TrxR). These molecules play pivotal roles in neutralizing ROS and maintaining redox homeostasis. This review aims to provide an updated and critical overview of the role of thiol-containing amino acids, specifically cysteine and selenocysteine, in the regulation of redox homeostasis during aging. Fungi, from saprophytes to pathogens, face predictable daily fluctuations in light, temperature, humidity, and nutrient availability. To cope, they have evolved an internal circadian clock that confers a major adaptive advantage. This review critically synthesizes current knowledge on the molecular architecture and physiological relevance of fungal circadian systems, moving beyond the canonical Neurospora crassa model to explore the broader phylogenetic diversity of timekeeping mechanisms. We examine the core transcription-translation feedback loop (TTFL) centered on the FREQUENCY/WHITE COLLAR (FRQ/WCC) system and contrast it with divergent and non-canonical oscillators, including the metabolic rhythms of yeasts and the universally conserved peroxiredoxin (PRX) oxidation cycles. A central theme is the clock’s role in gating cellular defenses against oxidative, osmotic, and nutritional stress, enabling fungi to anticipate and withstand environmental insults through proactive regulation. We provide a detailed analysis of chrono-pathogenesis, where the circadian control of virulence factors aligns fungal attacks with windows of host vulnerability, with a focus on experimental evidence from pathogens like Botrytis cinerea, Fusarium oxysporum, and Magnaporthe oryzae. The review explores the downstream pathways—including transcriptional cascades, post-translational modifications, and epigenetic regulation—that translate temporal signals into physiological outputs such as developmental rhythms in conidiation and hyphal branching. Finally, we highlight critical knowledge gaps, particularly in understudied phyla like Basidiomycota, and discuss future research directions. This includes the exploration of novel clock architectures and the emerging, though speculative, hypothesis of “chrono-therapeutics”—interventions designed to disrupt fungal clocks—as a forward-looking concept for managing fungal infections. This study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of psychological distress among medical students in Spain, a growing concern given the high prevalence rates of anxiety, depression, and burnout reported across multiple medical schools and universities. To assess the scope and key characteristics of this phenomenon, a thorough literature search was conducted in the PubMed, ProQuest, and Web of Science (WoS) databases. Studies published between 2010 and 2024 in peer-reviewed scientific journals, written in English or Spanish, and specifically focused on medical students enrolled in Spanish universities were considered for inclusion. A total of 14 studies were analysed. The findings indicate that psychological distress often emerges early in medical training and tends to intensify as students progress academically. Female medical students are consistently more affected, as most of the studies reviewed indicate that they exhibit higher levels of depressive symptoms, trait anxiety, and perceived stress. Some research also suggests greater levels of burnout among female students compared to their male peers. Key contributing factors include academic overload and dissatisfaction, sleep deprivation, and the use of maladaptive coping strategies. Although awareness of the issue is increasing, available evidence suggests that institutional responses remain limited, and that only a small number of universities have implemented structured mental health programmes. Overall, the results underscore the urgent need for institutional reforms in Spanish medical education to safeguard students’ mental wellbeing. Key priorities include revising curricula, implementing structured emotional support programmes, and ensuring accessible services—requiring coordinated, long-term commitment across academic, healthcare, and policy sectors. Future research should explore longitudinal trends and the effectiveness of targeted interventions. Full article

Background/Objectives: Cystic fibrosis-associated liver disease (CFLD) is a significant complication in individuals with cystic fibrosis (CF), contributing to morbidity and mortality, with no universally accepted, reliable, non-invasive diagnostic tool for early detection. Current diagnostic methods, including liver biopsy and imaging, remain resource-intensive and invasive. Non-invasive biomarkers like the Fibrosis-4 (FIB-4) index have shown promise in diagnosing liver fibrosis in various chronic liver diseases. This study explores the potential of the FIB-4 index to predict CFLD in an adult CF population and assesses its correlation with transient elastography (TE) as a potential diagnostic tool. The aim of this study is to evaluate the diagnostic performance of the FIB-4 index for CFLD in adults with CF and investigate its relationship with TE-based liver stiffness measurements (LSM). Methods: The study was conducted in a regional cystic fibrosis unit, including 261 adult CF patients. FIB-4 scores were calculated using an online tool (mdcalc.com) based on patient age, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and platelet count. In parallel, 29 patients underwent liver stiffness measurement using TE (Fibroscan®). Statistical analyses included non-parametric tests for group comparisons and Pearson’s correlation to assess the relationship between FIB-4 scores and TE results. Results: The mean FIB-4 score in patients diagnosed with CFLD was higher (0.99 ± 0.83) compared to those without CFLD (0.64 ± 0.38), although the difference was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). TE results for CFLD patients (5.9 kPa) also did not show a significant difference compared to non-CFLD patients (4.2 ± 1.6 kPa, p > 0.05). However, a positive correlation (r = 0.401, p = 0.031) was found between FIB-4 scores and TE-based LSM, suggesting a potential complementary diagnostic role. Conclusions: The FIB-4 index, while not sufficient as a standalone diagnostic tool for CFLD in adults with CF, demonstrates potential when used in conjunction with other diagnostic methods like TE. This study introduces a novel approach for integrating non-invasive diagnostic markers in CF care, offering a pathway for future clinical practice. The combination of FIB-4 and TE could serve as an accessible, cost-effective alternative to invasive diagnostic techniques, improving early diagnosis and management of CFLD in the CF population. Additionally, future research should explore the integration of these tools with emerging biomarkers and clinical features to refine diagnostic algorithms for CFLD, potentially reducing reliance on liver biopsies and improving patient outcomes.
