Oral–Systemic Health Awareness Among Physicians and Dentists in Croatian Primary Healthcare: A Cross-Sectional Study

Objectives: This study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and self-confidence of physicians and dentists in Croatia regarding the relationship between oral and systemic health, focusing on periodontal disease and oral manifestations of systemic diseases. Methods: A cross-sectional, web-based survey was conducted among physicians and dentists in Croatian primary healthcare. The questionnaire addressed six thematic domains, including demographic information, knowledge, self-assessment, and clinical practice. Descriptive and comparative statistical analyses were performed. Results: A total of 529 respondents were included (291 physicians and 238 dentists). The mean knowledge score for the association between periodontitis and systemic diseases was 6.8 ± 3.6 out of 15, indicating limited knowledge. For oral manifestations of systemic diseases, the mean score was 10.0 ± 3.8 out of 16, reflecting moderate proficiency. Dentists scored higher than physicians in both domains, though not significantly (p > 0.05). Routine oral mucosal examinations were reported by 89.5% of dentists and 43.0% of physicians (p ≤ 0.001). Only 21.3% of physicians correctly identified the link between periodontitis and adverse pregnancy outcomes, compared to 58.8% of dentists. The primary barriers to effective clinical management were a lack of experience (52.7%) and inadequate education. While 68.3% of dentists felt adequately educated on oral–systemic links, only 22.7% of physicians reported the same. Conclusions: Significant gaps in knowledge and confidence were observed, particularly among physicians. These findings underscore the need to integrate oral–systemic health topics into medical education and to promote interprofessional collaboration to improve patient outcomes. Full article

Background/Objectives: Health education plays a vital role in training health professionals and caregivers, supporting both prevention and the promotion of self-care. In this context, technology serves as a valuable ally by enabling continuous and flexible learning. Among the various domains of health education, nutrition stands out as a key element in the management of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), helping to prevent malnutrition and enhance patient well-being. Accordingly, this study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the teaching and learning processes within a learning pathway focused on food and nutrition in the context of ALS. Methods: This study adopted a longitudinal, quantitative design. The learning pathway, titled “Food and Nutrition in ALS,” consisted of four self-paced and self-instructional Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), offered through the Virtual Learning Environment of the Brazilian Health System (AVASUS). Participants included health professionals, caregivers, and patients from all five regions of Brazil. Participants had the autonomy to complete the courses in any order, with no prerequisites for enrollment. Results: Out of 14,263 participants enrolled nationwide, 182 were included in this study after signing the Informed Consent Form. Of these, 142 (78%) completed at least one course and participated in the educational intervention. A significant increase in knowledge was observed, with mean pre-test scores rising from 7.3 (SD = 1.8) to 9.6 (SD = 0.9) on the post-test across all courses (p < 0.001). Conclusions: The self-instructional, technology-mediated continuing education model proved effective in improving participants’ knowledge about nutrition in ALS. Future studies should explore knowledge retention, behavior change, and the impact of such interventions on clinical outcomes, especially in multidisciplinary care settings. Full article

This study explores the potential of Intelligent Geographic Information Systems (GISs) in advancing educational practices through the integration of real-time data models. The objective is to investigate how GIS technology can enhance teaching and learning by providing interactive and dynamic learning environments. The research employs a bibliometric analysis based on the Scopus database, covering the period from 2000 to 2024, to identify key trends, the evolution of GIS applications in education, and their pedagogical impact. Findings reveal that GISs, particularly when incorporating real-time data, enable a more immersive learning experience, facilitate data-driven decision-making, and promote student engagement through project-based learning. However, challenges such as the lack of specialized training for educators and limitations in technological infrastructure remain significant barriers to widespread adoption. The study concludes that Intelligent GISs have the potential to transform education by fostering personalized, interdisciplinary learning and enhancing educational management. It emphasizes the need for further research aimed at developing user-friendly systems and addressing ethical concerns to ensure the benefits of GIS technology are accessible to all students. Future studies should examine the long-term effects of GISs on student outcomes and explore their integration into diverse educational contexts. Full article

Background and Objectives: Gender disparities in pain management persist, with women frequently receiving inadequate analgesia despite reporting similar or higher pain levels compared with men. This issue is particularly evident across various medical and gynecological procedures. Materials and Methods: This integrative literature review synthesizes recent empirical studies examining gender biases in pain perception and management, focusing specifically on procedural pain in women. It includes an analysis of clinical research, patient-reported outcomes, and healthcare provider behaviors. Results: The findings indicate that unconscious biases, a lack of gender-specific clinical protocols, and prevailing cultural stereotypes contribute to the undertreatment of pain in women during procedures such as intrauterine device insertion and diagnostic hysteroscopy. Additionally, communication gaps between patients and healthcare providers exacerbate these disparities. Conclusions: Addressing gender disparities in pain management necessitates systemic reforms, including the implementation of gender-sensitive clinical guidelines, enhanced provider education, and targeted policy changes. Personalized, gender-informed approaches are essential to improving equity and quality of care in pain treatment. Full article

Background: Tobacco use is disproportionately high in rural areas, contributing to elevated cancer mortality, yet it often goes untreated due to limited access to care, high poverty and uninsured rates, and co-occurring substance use disorders (SUDs). This study explored the utility of using rapid qualitative analysis (RQA) to guide the adaptation of a tobacco-free workplace program (TFWP) in Texas healthcare centers serving adults with SUDs in medically underserved areas. Methods: From September–December 2023 and May–July 2024, we conducted 11 pre-implementation, virtual semi-structured group interviews focused on adapting the TFWP to local contexts (N = 69); 7 with providers (n = 34) and managers (n = 12) and 4 with patients (n = 23) in 6 healthcare centers. Two qualified analysts independently summarized transcripts, using RQA templates of key domains drawn from interview guides to summarize and organize data in matrices, enabling systematic comparison. Results: The main themes identified were minimal organizational tobacco cessation support and practices, and attitudinal barriers, as follows: (1) the need for program materials tailored to local populations; (2) limited tobacco cessation practices and partial policies—staff requested guidance on enhancing tobacco screenings and cessation delivery, and integrating new interventions; (3) contradictory views on treating tobacco use that can inhibit implementation (e.g., wanting to quit yet anxious that quitting would cause SUD relapse); and (4) inadequate environmental supports—staff requested treating tobacco-use training, patients group cessation counseling; both requested nicotine replacement therapy. Conclusions: RQA identified key areas requiring capacity development through participants’ willingness to adopt the following adaptations: program content (e.g., trainings and tailored educational materials), delivery methods/systems (e.g., adopting additional tobacco care interventions) and implementation strategies (e.g., integrating tobacco cessation practices into routine care) critical to optimizing TFWP fit and implementation. The study findings can inform timely formative evaluation processes to design and tailor similar intervention efforts by addressing site-specific needs and implementation barriers to enhance program uptake. Advanced three-dimensional extended reality (XR) technologies are highly suitable for cultural heritage research and education. XR tools enable the creation of realistic virtual or augmented reality applications for curating and disseminating information about cultural artifacts and sites. Developing XR applications for cultural heritage requires interdisciplinary collaboration involving strong teamwork and soft skills to manage user requirements, system specifications, and design cycles. Given the diverse end-users, achieving high precision, accuracy, and efficiency in information management and user experience is crucial. Human–computer interaction (HCI) design and evaluation methods are essential for ensuring usability and return on investment. This article presents ten case studies of cultural heritage software projects, illustrating the interdisciplinary work between computer science and HCI design. Students from institutions such as the State University of New York (USA), Glasgow School of Art (UK), University of Granada (Spain), University of Málaga (Spain), Duy Tan University (Vietnam), Imperial College London (UK), Research University Institute of Communication & Computer Systems (Greece), Technical University of Košice (Slovakia), and Indiana University (USA) contributed to creating, assessing, and improving the usability of these diverse cultural heritage applications. The results include a structured typology of CH XR application scenarios, detailed insights into design and evaluation practices across ten international use cases, and a development framework that supports interdisciplinary collaboration and stakeholder integration in phygital cultural heritage projects. This research paper presents an assessment of geohazards on Lefkas Island, Greece, using Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to map risk and enhance public awareness through an interactive web application. Natural hazards such as landslides, floods, wildfires, and desertification threaten both the safety of residents and the island’s tourism-dependent economy, particularly due to its seismic activity and Mediterranean climate. By combining the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction with GIS capabilities, we created detailed hazard maps that visually represent areas of susceptibility and provide critical insights for local authorities and the public. The web application developed serves as a user-friendly platform for disseminating hazard information and educational resources, thus promoting community preparedness and resilience. The findings highlight the necessity for proactive land management strategies and community engagement in disaster risk reduction efforts. This study underscores GIS’s pivotal role in fostering informed decision making and enhancing the safety of Lefkas Island’s inhabitants and visitors in the face of environmental challenges. The growing influence of technology in the healthcare industry has led to the creation of innovative applications that improve convenience, accessibility, and diagnostic accuracy. However, health applications face significant challenges concerning user privacy and data security, as they handle extremely sensitive personal and medical information. Privacy-Enhancing Technologies (PETs), such as Privacy-Attribute-based Credentials, Differential Privacy, and Federated Learning, have emerged as crucial tools to tackle these challenges. Despite their potential, PETs are not widely utilized due to technical and implementation obstacles. This research introduces a comprehensive framework for protecting health applications from privacy and security threats, with a specific emphasis on gamified mental health apps designed to manage Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children. Acknowledging the heightened sensitivity of mental health data, especially in applications for children, our framework prioritizes user-centered design and strong privacy measures. We suggest an identity management system based on blockchain technology to ensure secure and transparent credential management and incorporate Federated Learning to enable privacy-preserving AI-driven predictions. These advancements ensure compliance with data protection regulations, like GDPR, while meeting the needs of various stakeholders, including children, parents, educators, and healthcare professionals. This paper investigates integrating a sensory data model for managing an existing 50-year-old building. A primary challenge in retrofitting older structures is the optimal deployment of high-quality sensors, systematic data acquisition, and subsequent data management. To address this, the study implemented a network of over 50 sensors connected via 270 m of wired infrastructure, deliberately avoiding wireless transmission to ensure data reliability. This configuration generates 5568 data points daily, which are archived on a dedicated server. The data is planned for integration into the Campus Geographical Information System (GIS), enabling private and public access. A methodology was employed, involving the strategic placement of sensors based on building use patterns, continuous data monitoring, and iterative sensor performance evaluation. The findings from the study indicate that integrating sensory data through this structured approach significantly enhances building management capabilities. Specifically, the results demonstrate improved energy efficiency and environmental performance, which is particularly relevant for public and educational facilities. The research highlights that a data-driven, monitoring-based management system can optimize operational functions and inform future retrofitting strategies for aging buildings. Full article

From Clicks to Care: Enhancing Clinical Decision Making Through Structured Electronic Health Records Navigation Training

Background: The effective use of electronic health records (EHRs) is an essential clinical skill, but medical schools have traditionally provided limited systematic teaching on the topic. Inefficient use of EHRs results in delays in diagnosis, fragmented care, and clinician burnout. This study investigates the impact on medical students’ confidence, efficiency, and proficiency in extracting clinically pertinent information from patient records following an organised EHR teaching programme. Methods: This observational cohort involved 60 final-year medical students from three London medical schools. Participants received a structured three-phase intervention involving an introductory workshop, case-based hands-on practice, and guided reflection on EHR navigation habits. Pre- and post-intervention testing involved mixed-method surveys, simulated case tasks, and faculty-assessed data retrieval exercises to measure changes in students’ confidence, efficiency, and ability to synthesise patient information. Quantitative data were analysed using paired t-tests, while qualitative reflections were theme-analysed to identify shifts in clinical reasoning. Results: All 60 students successfully finished the intervention and assessments. Pre-intervention, only 28% students reported feeling confident in using EHRs effectively, with a confidence rating of 3.0. Post-intervention, 87% reported confidence with a rating of 4.5 (p < 0.01). Efficiency in the recovery of critical patient information improved from 3.2 to 4.6 (p < 0.01). Students also demonstrated enhanced awareness regarding system-related issues, such as information overload and fragmented documentation, and provided recommendations on enhancing data synthesis for clinical decision making. Conclusions: This study emphasises the value of structured EHR instruction in enhancing the confidence and proficiency of medical students in using electronic records. The integration of structured EHR education to medical curricula can better prepare future physicians in managing information overload, improve diagnostic accuracy, and enhance the quality of patient care. Future research should explore the long-term impact of structured EHR training on clinical performance, diagnostic accuracy, and patient outcomes during real-world clinical placements and postgraduate training. Accessibility in web systems is essential to ensure everyone can obtain information equally. Based on the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAGs), the Electronic Government Accessibility Model (eMAG) was established in Brazil to guide the accessibility of federal government web systems. Based on these guidelines, this research sought to understand the reasons behind the persistent gaps in web accessibility in Brazil, even after 20 years of eMAG. To this end, the accessibility of the Integrated Academic Activities Management System (SIGAA), used by 39 higher education institutions in Brazil, was evaluated. The living lab methodology was used to carry out accessibility and usability tests based on students’ experiences with visual impairments during interaction with the system. Furthermore, IT professionals’ knowledge of eMAG/WCAG guidelines, the use of accessibility tools, and their beliefs about accessible systems were investigated through an online questionnaire. Additionally, the syllabuses of training courses for IT professionals at 20 universities were analyzed through document analysis. The research confirmed non-compliance with the guidelines in the software researched, gaps in the knowledge of IT professionals regarding software accessibility practices, and inadequacy of accessibility content within training courses. It is concluded, therefore, that universities should incorporate mandatory courses related to software accessibility into the training programs for IT professionals and that organizations should provide continuous training for IT professionals in software accessibility practices. Furthermore, the current accessibility legislation should be updated, and its compliance should be required within all organizations, whether public or private. Full article

Sustainable development remains a crucial global priority. Despite significant progress at both the policy and technical levels, disparities in urban development and the absence of a comprehensive evaluation framework impede practical outcomes in China. While previous research has established the value of multidimensional frameworks and international indices for assessing urban sustainability, existing studies often lack the integration of local dynamics and rely on linear methods that cannot fully capture the complex, nonlinear changes in Chinese cities. This study proposes a four-dimensional indicator system and employs the catastrophe progression method to evaluate sustainable development levels. This study used ten years of panel data (2012–2022) from eight representative Chinese cities and normalized and analyzed 38 sub-indicators to derive membership values for each city and dimension. The findings reveal substantial disparities in sustainable development across the cities, with notable improvements in environmental indicators but persistent volatility in social welfare and resource efficiency. Technological innovation and education resource allocation emerge as management priorities for most cities. This methodological innovation fills a critical gap, offering a replicable framework for other developing countries and supporting the localization of global sustainability agendas. The study’s findings directly inform policy, advancing the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Full article

Mobile phone waste management is a growing environmental challenge, with improper disposal contributing to resource depletion, pollution and missed opportunities for material recovery. This study presents the findings of a dual-purpose survey (11,163 respondents) conducted in a wide academic context in Italy, aimed at both assessing mobile phones disposal behaviors and knowledge and raising awareness through structured educational prompts about sustainable e-waste management. The results reveal significant behavioral patterns and knowledge gaps across demographic groups. While most respondents (90.6%) own one phone, males tend to have more than females. Phones are replaced every 3–5 years by 48.8% of users and every 1–3 years by 36.7%, with students tending to replace them earlier. Only 20.2% replace their phone when irreparable while 46% replace them due to high repair costs. A large majority (92.3%) store old devices at home, forming an estimated urban mine of 29,799 unused phones. The awareness of hazardous components is higher than that of critical raw materials, with males more informed than females and students in scientific fields displaying greater awareness than those in humanities and health disciplines. The awareness of official take-back programs is particularly low, especially among younger generations. Notably, 90% reported increased awareness from the educational survey and 93.1% expressed willingness to use an on-campus e-waste collection system. These results highlight the role of universities as catalysts for sustainable behavior, supporting the design of targeted educational strategies and policy actions in line with circular economy principles and Sustainable Development Goal 12 “Responsible consumption and production”. Extensive research in the field of construction safety has predominantly focused on identifying the causes and impacts of construction accidents, evaluating safety plans, assessing the effectiveness of safety education materials, and analyzing relevant policies. However, comparatively limited attention has been given to the systematic formation, management, and utilization of safety-related information and knowledge. Despite significant advancements in information and knowledge management technologies across the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industries, their application in construction safety remains underdeveloped. This study addresses this gap by proposing a novel ontology-based framework specifically designed for construction safety management. Unlike previous models, the proposed ontology integrates diverse safety regulations and terminologies into a unified and semantically structured knowledge model. It comprises three primary superclasses covering key areas of construction safety, with an initial focus on fall hazards—one of the most frequent and severe risks, particularly in roofing activities. This domain-specific approach not only improves semantic clarity and standardization but also enhances reusability and extensibility for other risk domains. The ontology was developed using established methodologies and validated through reasoning tools and competency questions. By providing a formally structured, logic-driven knowledge base, the model supports automated safety reasoning, facilitates communication among stakeholders, and lays the foundation for future intelligent safety management systems in construction. This research contributes a validated, extensible, and regulation-aligned ontology model that addresses critical challenges in safety information integration, sharing, and application. Full article

This article summarizes the scope and content of the Special Issue (SI) entitled “Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Cartography for a Sustainable World” and its contribution to the global discourse regarding sustainability concerns. At the heart of the discussion in this SI lies: (i) GIS, a valuable tool and a means for modeling, designing, and analyzing (spatial) data and processes related to the pursuance of sustainability objectives at both local and global scales; and (ii) Cartography as a discipline, which through maps and visualizations can convey the present state. The latter can play a vital role in educating, empowering, and raising public awareness with regard to sustainability concerns on the one hand, and can form a basis for policy-makers, scientists, and citizens for articulating effective sustainability strategies on the other. The fulfillment of the SI goals is attained through a collection of 26 papers that delve into and attempt to visualize sustainability achievements or concerns on a variety of themes in different parts of the world. More specifically, the content of this collection of papers can be categorized into the following sustainability-related themes: Urbanization, Transportation, Carbon Emissions Management, Infrastructure, Rural Development, and Climate Change. The main conclusion is that planning and implementing sustainability policies is a challenging and multi-level task, and must be carried out within a fully dynamic decision environment. Although some progress has already been made, more intensive and collective efforts from scientists, governments, the entrepreneurial community, and citizens are needed in order for the ambitious goals of Agenda 2030 to be reached.
