Tourism is a major driver of economic growth in tropical island destinations but also places increasing pressure on fragile marine ecosystems. This study examined tourists’ environmental awareness, perceptions, and conservation-related behaviors on Cozumel Island, part of the Mesoamerican Reef System and home to multiple protected areas, including the Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park. Between June and September 2022, surveys were conducted with 144 tourists at major tourism hubs across the island. Although 86% of respondents identified themselves as environmentally conscious, awareness of local environmental impacts associated with tourism remained limited, and only 6% reported engaging in environmentally conscious actions during their visit. Awareness of the protected status and regulations of the Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park was also low (39%), and only 19% reported purchasing the required conservation bracelet or park pass. Short-stay cruise visitors represented 65% of respondents, potentially limiting opportunities for deeper environmental engagement and conservation education. These findings highlight the need for stronger pre-trip environmental communication, visible on-site interpretation, and targeted outreach strategies to support sustainable tourism and coral reef conservation in the Mexican Caribbean. The transition from secondary school to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) higher education may be hindered when science is perceived as abstract or disconnected from everyday experience. This descriptive educational-practice report presents Beyond the Magic, a participatory science station implemented during the annual ConCiencia FACTA outreach event at the Faculty of Food Science and Technology, National University of Comahue, Argentina. Approximately 200 students aged 15–18 from eight regional secondary schools attended the event in October 2025. During approximately 45-min visits in groups of 10–15, students encountered eight short chemistry and physics experiences organized around prediction, observation, guided explanation, and discussion. Retrospective facilitator observations were organized into descriptive categories: predictions and alternative explanations, spontaneous questions, everyday-life connections, changes in willingness to participate, questions about university study and research, and participation by accompanying teachers. The facilitators perceived broader participation as each visit progressed. These observations were not counted, coded, independently assessed, or collected as contemporaneous transcripts, and no measures of learning, situational interest, STEM identity, or educational aspirations were administered. The contribution is therefore a replicable implementation design rather than evidence of educational effectiveness or changes in STEM pathways. Full article

Background/Objectives: Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) remains a major concern in cattle research, and the long-term effects of vaccination on health and immune responses are not well defined. This study compared gene expression in vaccinated (VAX) and unvaccinated (NOVAX) preweaned calves and subsequent BRD development during backgrounding. Methods: Whole blood was collected at four timepoints (TIME; T1-4; median age 107, 114, 183, and 230, respectively) from 73 bull calves enrolled in a blinded randomized controlled trial; VAX calves received a commercial attenuated multivalent viral vaccine at T1 and T3. Results: Whole-blood transcriptomics was used to quantify mRNA, identifying 5364 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) for TIME, 84 DEGs for vaccination (VAX), and 129 for BRD status using both glmmSeq and QLF testing (glmmSeq only DEGs: 11,068 TIME, 358 VAX, and 9241 BRD). VAX calves at T3 were clustered uniquely with the enrichment of pathways related to the cellular response to stress, neutrophil degranulation, and antigen processing and presentation compared to NOVAX cattle and VAX at other timepoints. Interferon pathways, natural killer cell responses, and neutrophil activity were generally absent across all timepoints, while antigen presentation pathways were persistently enriched. Regardless of vaccination or future BRD diagnosis, immunological development over time was indicated by DEGs related to adaptive immunity, lymphocyte development, and inflammatory resolution. At T4, cattle diagnosed with BRD during backgrounding had differential gene expression related to oxygen transport, hemoglobin function, and metabolic processes compared to cattle that remained healthy. Conclusions: This study provides insights into the possible genomic mechanisms underlying vaccine responses and preclinical BRD susceptibility in preweaned beef cattle. Full article

Informal STEM learning experiences are widely used to promote students’ interest and engagement in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), yet limited evidence exists regarding the educational value of one-day STEM outreach events. This study examined middle school students’ perceptions of STEM interest and self-efficacy following participation in NSF STEM Day, a one-day informal STEM learning experience that combined project demonstrations designed by college student mentors with a field-based learning experience at the Museum of Illusions to learn about hands-on robotics, coding, Internet of Things (IoT), and engineering and mathematical concepts. This study explored students’ learning experiences, STEM interests and STEM self-efficacy perceptions, and college student mentors’ reflections. First, participants reported positive learning experiences, and engineering was reported more frequently as an area of STEM interest in the post-survey (38.0%) than the pre-survey (25.6%). Second, they reported positive STEM self-efficacy perceptions in the post-survey. A significant grade-level difference was observed for one STEM self-efficacy item assessing students’ confidence in applying scientific principles, with eighth-grade students reporting higher confidence than sixth-grade students (F(3,26) = 3.76, p = 0.023). Third, qualitative findings showed that college student mentors’ reflections reported positive experiences and valued the opportunity to engage middle school students in hands-on STEM learning activities. The findings contribute evidence regarding the educational value of short-duration STEM outreach experiences for broadening students’ exposure to STEM learning. Full article

Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) carries some of the widest immunisation gaps in Europe, and improving coverage there is often treated as a problem of access infrastructure. On 14 May 2026, a multi-stakeholder meeting hosted at the Romanian Parliament brought together around twenty-five speakers, among some fifty participants in all, from Romania, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Bulgaria, together with international contributors, to agree which barriers to vaccine confidence matter most in the region, which interventions are deliverable within 12 to 24 months, and how responsibility for them should be divided among stakeholders. This Perspective synthesises that discussion as a set of strategies for coverage. Meeting-derived priorities are set against published coverage and confidence data for the region and against the published intervention literature. We argue that the central problem across the region is eroded trust rather than missing information, because misinformation succeeds mainly where trust has already broken down, a process deepened by a historically conditioned, post-communist distrust of public institutions. The two recommendations carried most strongly, as both high in expected impact and achievable within 12 to 24 months, were continuing professional education for primary care on vaccine communication and the resourcing of locally trusted community figures, including health mediators working with marginalised populations. We then show how system-design reforms already demonstrated in the region, in particular pharmacy-based vaccination, direct reimbursement, and targeted outreach to under-vaccinated and marginalised groups, turn restored confidence into measurable coverage while narrowing inequities. We close with a 12-to-24-month agenda for CEE, organised around a clear multi-stakeholder division of labour. These are stakeholder-derived priorities that now require implementation and evaluation. Background: Rural older women in China face intersecting disadvantages including eroded family support, limited pension coverage, and high social isolation that elevate depressive symptoms. Although Long-Term Care Insurance (LTCI) has expanded rapidly since 2016 to provide both financial protection and formal care services for older adults, whether it can compensate for depleted informal support and protect mental health among this vulnerable population remains unknown. Methods: We used five waves of CHARLS (2011–2020) with 2193 rural women aged ≥60. We employed a staggered difference-in-differences design, complemented by moderation analysis, heterogeneity tests, and time-dependent survival analysis. Robustness checks included Callaway-Sant’Anna DID, placebo permutation and baseline exclusion sensitivity. Results: LTCI reduced depression scores by 0.45 points (β = −0.447, p = 0.028) and depression onset hazard by 36.1% (HR = 0.639, p = 0.009). Benefits were compensatory, concentrated among women lacking regular emotional and financial support from children and those with high social isolation. Heterogeneity analyses demonstrated a pronounced age gradient and a significant education gradient, while care-need and disability subgroups showed directionally consistent but underpowered effects. These findings were robust to supplementary sensitivity checks, including Callaway-Sant’Anna DID, placebo permutation, and baseline-depressed exclusion. Conclusions: LTCI confers meaningful mental health protection for rural older women through compensatory pathways that substitute for depleted informal support. However, benefits are concentrated among younger-old and more-educated women, raising equity concerns. Gender-sensitive implementation with mental health screening, targeted outreach for less-educated women, and community-based enrollment assistance is essential to ensure policy equity. Full article

Background/Objectives: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including cardiovascular disease and diabetes, present an increasing challenge in humanitarian settings. While healthcare services in refugee camps have traditionally prioritised acute and communicable diseases, the long-term management of chronic conditions remains difficult, particularly among older adults. This study explored healthcare providers’ perspectives on barriers to cardiovascular disease and diabetes care among elderly Rohingya refugees living in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. Methods: A qualitative study was conducted using semi-structured interviews with six physicians working in Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. Participants were recruited through purposive and snowball sampling. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analysed using inductive thematic analysis. Results: Three overarching categories of barriers were identified: service delivery barriers, physical and environmental barriers, and socio-cultural barriers. Healthcare providers described limited diagnostic capacity, restricted medication availability, fragmented continuity of care, transport difficulties, challenging camp terrain, language barriers, low health literacy, and reliance on informal healthcare providers as key challenges affecting long-term management of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. These interconnected barriers were perceived to reduce healthcare access and continuity of care for elderly Rohingya refugees. Conclusions: The findings suggest that humanitarian healthcare systems should strengthen long-term management of non-communicable diseases among ageing refugee populations. Improving diagnostic capacity, ensuring reliable access to essential medicines, enhancing continuity of care, and supporting culturally appropriate health education and outreach services may improve chronic disease management in humanitarian settings. Further research exploring the perspectives of elderly Rohingya refugees is needed to complement healthcare provider perspectives. Full article

National recycling rates have stagnated at approximately 32 percent in the United States, suggesting that existing programs are not achieving desired levels of diversion. A growing body of field experiments has examined whether informational and norm-based messaging interventions can shift recycling behavior, though most studies rely on self-reported outcomes or stated preferences rather than objective behavioral measures. Using bin-level audit data from a randomized field trial among 200 voluntarily enrolled households in Columbus, Ohio, we find that norm-based and educational message framing produce statistically indistinguishable average effects on recycling fill level, participation, and contamination over a 29-week program. However, the analysis identifies that norm-based messaging outperforms educational messaging when adverse weather raises participation costs, while educational messaging holds up better during high-distraction community events. These patterns point toward adaptive messaging designs that condition content on observable contextual triggers as a promising direction for extracting greater behavioral returns from recycling outreach investment. Background: Missed and zero-dose children remain major barriers to polio eradication in settings affected by insecurity, poverty, weak health systems, and social exclusion. This narrative review synthesized evidence on how gender norms and related social determinants influence childhood polio vaccination in Afghanistan, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Sudan. Afghanistan and Pakistan remain the only countries with endemic wild poliovirus transmission, while northern Nigeria, especially areas affected by insurgency, and war-affected Sudan continue to report substantial numbers of polio zero-dose and under-immunized children, together with occasional reports of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus. Methods: A comprehensive search of peer-reviewed and institutional literature was conducted in major databases and relevant grey literature sources. Eligible studies examined childhood immunization or polio vaccination among children under five and reported gender-related determinants of vaccination uptake. Findings were synthesized thematically. Results: Forty-one studies were included. Five interconnected domains emerged: women’s empowerment, autonomy, and household decision-making; male involvement, household gender norms, and family power relations; socioeconomic and structural gender-related barriers; education, information access, community perceptions, and health system responsiveness; and war, insurgency and their gendered impact on childhood polio immunization. Across countries, limited maternal autonomy, restricted mobility, dependence on male decision-makers, poverty, conflict, displacement, misinformation, and weak health services reduced access to vaccination. Supportive male engagement, female health workers, trusted community leadership, and culturally responsive outreach facilitated vaccine acceptance. Conclusions: Gender influences childhood polio vaccination through intersecting household, community, structural, and health-system pathways. Family power extends beyond male decision-making, with women’s education and influence within households shaping vaccination decisions. Strengthening women’s agency, constructively engaging men (e.g., through husband schools), and delivering culturally responsive services are essential for reaching missed and zero-dose children and accelerating polio eradication. This study investigates how community engagement and outreach programs can serve as a vehicle for knowledge co-production between higher educational institutions (HEIs) and industry in developing economies. Despite growing calls for collaboration between HEIs and industry, the existing literature remains policy-driven and largely instrumental, offering a limited understanding of how engagement practices are socially constructed, negotiated, and experienced by diverse stakeholders. There is limited qualitative research on how community voices are integrated into co-creation processes and how these interactions shape sustainable development in emerging economies. The research methodology for the study was developed using the research onion, and an interpretivist research philosophy was adopted. The study employed an inductive research approach to explore actors’ lived experiences and the meanings attached to engagement practices and collected data through in-depth interviews. Participants in the study included representatives from HEIs, industry, and community stakeholders across selected sectors of the economy, and the data were analysed thematically to capture patterns of interactions, power relations, and knowledge and exchange processes underpinning co-production. The study revealed that effective community engagement goes beyond formal partnerships to encompass building lasting relationships which are characterised by trust, mutual learning, and context adaptation. Further, the study also showed that power asymmetries, institutional pressures, and resource constraints have restricted real co-production, resulting in symbolic rather than real engagement. Nevertheless, the use of inclusive and reflective approaches has been shown to foster locally acceptable and essential innovative interventions that can improve sustainable development. The study therefore recommends embedding participatory frameworks within HEIs and industry collaborations to strengthen institutional support for inclusive engagement and to reorient policies towards community-centred knowledge systems. This study, therefore, contributes to the body of knowledge by enhancing theoretical and practical understanding of sustainable higher education–industry collaboration in developing economies by promoting an understanding of engagement as a co-production process. Early clinical exposure (ECE) has been associated with increased confidence, professionalism, and career exploration in undergraduate medical education. Student-run free clinics (SRFCs), such as the Health Outreach Project (HOP) at Drexel University College of Medicine, provide opportunities for preclinical students to engage in patient care and community outreach. This qualitative study explored medical students’ perceptions of participation in HOP. Fourteen third- and fourth-year medical students with prior HOP experience participated in four semi-structured focus groups conducted virtually over Zoom. Data were analyzed using an inductive thematic analysis approach. Four major themes emerged: (1) early clinical exposure and clinical skills development, (2) community engagement and patient-centered perspectives, (3) professional identity formation and career exploration, and (4) opportunities, limitations, and emotional challenges of outreach work. Participants described HOP as an important source of authentic clinical exposure that increased confidence in patient interactions and broadened awareness of social determinants of health and underserved populations. Students also reflected on the influence of HOP on professional identity formation, career interests, and perspectives on patient-centered care, while acknowledging frustrations related to systemic barriers and limited resources. These findings suggest that students perceive SRFCs as valuable experiential learning environments that support clinical preparedness and professional development early in medical training. This study examines associations between participation in a culturally responsive inventive learning experience featuring women engineers as guides and middle school students’ reported equity beliefs about belonging in inventing, interest in inventing, and their identification of women inventors. the students’ inventive interests. Following a single-session STEM outreach experience across five sites, which included family sessions held at a local museum, after-school STEM night family activities, and in-class visits (N = 215 students), participants completed a retrospective pre-post survey. Results indicated statistically significant positive shifts in students’ reported equity beliefs and interest in inventing following the session. However, findings were context-dependent: interest gains were more strongly associated with instructor connection and prior inventing experience, while equity belief shifts were observed broadly across participants and did not appear to depend on individual instructor connection. Instructor connection was not significantly associated with students’ identification of women inventors, suggesting that cognitive recognition of diverse inventors may require more sustained exposure than a single session provides. These findings suggest that single-session culturally responsive inventive learning experiences may be associated with positive motivational shifts in equity beliefs and interest, while deeper cognitive change in students’ inventor associations may require repeated and sustained engagement. Implications for the design of culturally responsive invention education programs are discussed. Full article

This study explores the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in higher education to enable the early identification of at-risk students using only engagement data from learning management systems (LMS). Unlike many existing early-warning models that are limited to single disciplines or rely on sensitive demographic and prior academic records, the proposed approach offers a privacy-conscious and highly generalizable predictive framework suitable for diverse higher education contexts. The dataset includes over 1.7 million LMS interaction records from 236 undergraduate subjects spanning four academic divisions. These subjects encompass a wide variety of instructional designs and assessment structures. To address cross-subject heterogeneity, this study employs rank-based engagement features that represent students’ relative behavioral patterns within each course, facilitating meaningful comparison across disciplines without reliance on absolute activity levels. Using standard machine learning classifiers, the model achieves over 90% prediction accuracy for final subject performance by Week 3 of the semester, demonstrating that reliable early detection of at-risk students is feasible at an early stage of teaching and learning. Rather than claiming intervention effectiveness, the study positions AI-enabled early prediction as a scalable foundation for proactive student support and enhanced teaching responsiveness, with the potential to inform timely pedagogical actions such as targeted outreach and academic advising. By emphasizing generalizability, ethical data use, and privacy protection in AI-enabled learning analytics, this research contributes practical insights into how predictive AI can responsibly support teaching and learning in higher education. Introduction: Knowledge of Iberian freshwater fish fauna among the general public is scarce and generally limited to a handful of species. Moreover, this knowledge gap increases as time goes by, particularly in younger generations, due to the lack of content on native fish fauna in school programmes. Nevertheless, schools across the country are proving increasingly receptive to innovative approaches that engage students in meaningful, real-world learning. Objectives: The LIFE PREDATOR programme leverages this opportunity to educate young people about freshwater fish communities. It aims to prevent the spread of the largest invasive fish in Portugal, the European catfish (Silurus glanis), by engaging students as active conservation ambassadors. Methodology: In inland Portugal, fishing is a cultural practice, and children frequently participate in angling activities alongside friends and family members. By reaching children, the programme simultaneously targets future anglers, potential decision-makers, and a channel for intergenerational knowledge transfer. Results: Thus far, the programme has reached over 5000 students and almost 60 schools, mostly throughout the Tagus basin. Preliminary assessments revealed improvements in students’ ability to name emblematic native fish species like the Iberian nase (Pseudochondrostoma spp.), European eel (Anguilla anguilla) and Iberian barbel (Luciobarbus spp.), and recognise the threats posed by invasives like the European catfish. To ensure national scalability, we have developed learning materials designed for use by teachers across Portugal, which are to be made available for free online. Beyond the dissemination directed to adult fishermen, which is often more demanding, Conclusions: LIFE PREDATOR ensures that knowledge about native river fauna, invasive species, and responsible fishing practices is conveyed through trusted, familiar voices. This intergenerational transmission model has the potential to embed long-lasting behavioural change within future fishing communities. Full article

Achieving carbon-neutral cities requires innovative strategies that integrate technological carbon capture, sustainable urban infrastructure, and proactive public engagement. While microalgae-based systems have shown promise for CO2 sequestration and resource recovery, their scalability remains constrained by high costs and energy-intensive photobioreactor (PBR) designs. Here, we propose the retrofit of existing urban fountains into high-efficiency microalgae cultivation systems—microalgae-enhanced fountain landscapes—as an integrated solution that bridges ecological function and social outreach. This approach capitalizes on ubiquitous fountain infrastructure to minimize deployment costs, employs advanced fountain-style cultivation technology to enhance biomass productivity, and leverages strategic locations in high-footfall urban zones to actively elevate public carbon literacy and motivate low-carbon behavioral shifts through immersive engagement—a vital step toward city-wide participatory climate action. We critically analyze the feasibility of this system, highlighting its potential for multi-stakeholder value creation across developers, municipalities, and citizens. Furthermore, we synthesize recent advances in suspended microalgae cultivation, building-integrated PBRs, and microalgae-informed landscape design to contextualize the development pathway of fountain-based systems. By uniting technical efficiency with civic education, this work establishes a replicable framework for scalable urban deployment—simultaneously advancing carbon mitigation, public awareness, and circular resource flows in the transition toward climate-resilient cities.
