This paper presents a compact, high-performance metasurface-based leaky-wave MIMO antenna with dimensions of 40 × 30 mm2, achieving a gain of 12.5 dBi and a radiation efficiency of 85%. The antenna enables precise control of electromagnetic waves, featuring a flower-like metasurface (MTS) with coffee bean-shaped arrays on substrates of varying permittivity, separated by a cavity layer to enhance coupling. Its dual-port MIMO design boosts data throughput operating in three bands (3.75–5.25 GHz, 6.4–15.4 GHz, and 22.5–30 GHz), while the leaky-wave mechanism supports frequency- or phase-dependent beamsteering without mechanical parts. Ideal for CubeSat communications, its compact size meets CubeSat constraints, and its high gain and efficiency ensure reliable long-distance communication with low power consumption, which is crucial for low Earth orbit operations. Circular polarization (CP) maintains signal integrity despite orientation changes, and MIMO capability supports high data rates for applications such as Earth observations or inter-satellite links. The beamsteering feature allows for dynamic tracking of ground stations or satellites, enhancing mission flexibility and reducing interference. This lightweight, efficient antenna addresses modern CubeSat challenges, providing a robust solution for advanced space communication systems with significant potential to enhance satellite connectivity and data transmission in complex space environments. A low-profile dual-polarized shared-aperture phased array antenna is proposed for Ku-band satellite communications in this paper. The stacked octagonal patches loaded with Via-rings are proposed as dual-polarized shared-aperture radiation elements, with the characteristics of wide impedance bandwidth, high gain, and weak coupling. Furthermore, innovative minimized three-port ring couplers are utilized for the differential-fed antenna array, further suppressing the cross-polarization component. Substrate integrated coaxial line (SICL) and microstrip line (MS) feed networks are employed for the excitation of transmitting band (Tx) horizontal polarization and receiving band (Rx) vertical polarization, respectively. The non-uniform subarray architecture is optimized to minimize the sidelobe levels with the reduced number of transmitter and receiver (T/R) radio frequency phase-shifting modules. As proof-of-concept examples, 16 × 24 and 32 × 24 array antennas are demonstrated and fabricated. The measured impedance bandwidths of the proposed phased array antennas are around 21.1%, while the in-band isolations are above 36.7 dB. Gains up to 29 dBi and 32.4 dBi are performed by two prototypes separately. In addition, the T/R phase-shifting modules are utilized to validate the beam-scanning characteristic, which is of value for dynamic satellite communications. Full article

This paper presents a novel dual-band flexible antenna, uniquely designed and extended to array as well as MIMO configurations for the Sub-6 GHz band. The single-element monopole antenna features a modified rectangular radiator with two L-strips and a reduced ground plane, enabling a compact dual-band response. The proposed four-element, two-port MIMO configuration is extended from the 1 × 2 array antenna, achieving an overall dimension of 57 × 50 × 0.1 mm3, making it exceptionally compact and flexible compared to existing rigid and bulkier designs. Operating in the 3.6–3.8 GHz and 5.65–5.95 GHz bands, the antenna delivers a high gain of 5.2 dBi and 7.7 dBi, outperforming many designs in terms of gain while maintaining the superior isolation of >22 dB utilizing a defected ground structure (DGS). The design satisfies key MIMO diversity metrics (ECC < 0.05, DG > 9.99) and demonstrates low SAR values (0.0702/0.25 W/kg at 3.75 GHz and 0.175/0.507 W/kg at 5.9 GHz), making it highly suitable for wearable and on-body communication, unlike many rigid counterparts. Fabricated on a flexible polyimide substrate, the antenna addresses challenges such as size, bandwidth, isolation, and safety in MIMO antenna design. The performance, validated through fabrication and measurement, establishes the proposed antenna as a superior alternative to existing MIMO designs for compact, high-performance Sub-6 GHz 5G applications. This paper presents a novel approach to synthesizing phased antenna arrays (PAAs) by combining Taylor-series expansion with neural networks (NNs), enhancing the PAA synthesis process for modern communication and radar systems. Synthesizing PAAs is crucial for these systems, offering versatile beamforming capabilities. Traditional methods often rely on complex analytical formulations or numerical optimizations, leading to suboptimal solutions or high computational costs. The proposed method uses Taylor-series expansion to derive analytical expressions for PAA radiation patterns and beamforming characteristics, simplifying the optimization process. Additionally, neural networks are employed to model the intricate relationships between PAA parameters and desired performance metrics, providing adaptive learning and real-time adjustments. A validation of the proposed method is performed on a dual-band 5G antenna, which exhibits marked resonances at 28.14 GHz and 37.88 GHz, with reflection coefficients of S11 = −19 dB and S11 = −19.33 dB, respectively. The integration of Taylor expansion with NNs offers improved efficiency, reduced computational complexity, and the ability to explore a broader design space. Simulation results and case studies demonstrate the effectiveness and applicability of the approach in practical scenarios. This work represents a significant advancement in PAA synthesis, showcasing the synergistic integration of mathematical modeling and artificial intelligence for optimized antenna design in modern communication and radar systems. With the rapid development of Wi-Fi 6/6E and dual-band wireless systems, there is an increasing demand for compact antennas with balanced high-gain performance across both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. However, most existing dual-band metasurface antennas face challenges in uneven gain distribution between lower/higher-frequency bands and structural miniaturization. This paper proposes a high-gain dual-band metasurface antenna based on an artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) array, which has a significant advantage in miniaturization and improving antenna performance. Two types of dual-band AMC structures are applied to design the metasurface antenna. The optimal antenna with dual-slot AMC array operates in the 2.42–2.48 GHz and 5.16–5.53 GHz frequency bands, with a 25% size reduction compared to the reference dual-band U-slot antenna. Meanwhile, high gains of 7.65 dBi and 8 dBi are achieved at 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequency bands, respectively. Experimental results verify stable radiation gains across the operation bands, where the total efficiency remains above 90%, agreeing well with the simulation results. This research provides an effective strategy for high-gain and dual-band metasurface antennas, offering a promising solution for integrated modern wireless systems such as Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth, and MIMO technology. To address the inherent contradiction between low-profile design and high gain in traditional omnidirectional antennas, as well as the narrow bandwidth constraints of ENZ antennas, this study presents a dual-mode ENZ-FP collaborative resonant antenna array design utilizing a substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW). Through systematic analysis of ENZ media’s quasi-static field distribution, we innovatively integrated it with Fabry–Perot (F–P) resonance, achieving unprecedented dual-band omnidirectional radiation at 5.18 GHz and 5.72 GHz within a single ENZ antenna configuration for the first time. The directivity of both frequencies reached 12.0 dBi, with a remarkably low profile of only 0.018λ. We then extended this design to an ENZ-FP dual-mode beam-scanning array. By incorporating phase control technology, we achieved wide-angle scanning despite low-profile constraints. The measured 3 dB beam coverage angles at the dual frequencies were ±63° and ±65°, respectively. Moreover, by loading the impedance matching network, the −10 dB impedance bandwidth of the antenna array was further extended to 2.4% and 2.7%, respectively, thus overcoming the narrowband limitations of the ENZ antenna and enhancing practical applicability. The antennas were manufactured using PCB (Printed Circuit Board) technology, offering high integration and cost efficiency. This provides a new paradigm for UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) communication and radar detection systems featuring multi-band operation, a low-profile design, and flexible beam control capabilities. Millimeter-wave signals experience substantial path loss when penetrating common building materials, hindering seamless indoor coverage from outdoor networks. To address this limitation, we present the 28-GHz “Meta-Window”, a mass-producible, visible transparent device designed to enhance millimeter-wave signal focusing. Fabricated via metal sputtering and etching on a standard soda-lime glass substrate, the meta-window incorporates subwavelength metallic structures arranged in a rotating pattern based on the Pancharatnam–Berry phase principle, enabling 0–360° phase control within the 25–32 GHz frequency band. A 210 mm × 210 mm prototype operating at 28 GHz was constructed using a 69 × 69 array of metasurface unit cells, leveraging planar electromagnetic lens principles. Experimental results demonstrate that the meta-window achieves greater than 20 dB signal focusing gain between 26 and 30 GHz, consistent with full-wave electromagnetic simulations, while maintaining up to 74.93% visible transmittance. This dual transparency—for both visible light and millimeter-wave frequencies—was further validated by a communication prototype system exhibiting a greater than 20 dB signal-to-noise ratio improvement and successful demodulation of a 64-QAM single-carrier signal (1 GHz bandwidth, 28 GHz) with an error vector magnitude of 4.11%. Moreover, cascading the meta-window with a reconfigurable reflecting metasurface antenna array facilitates large-angle beam steering; stable demodulation (error vector magnitude within 6.32%) was achieved within a ±40° range using the same signal parameters. Compared to conventional transmissive metasurfaces, this approach leverages established glass manufacturing techniques and offers potential for direct building integration, providing a promising solution for improving millimeter-wave indoor penetration and coverage. To achieve multi-band coverage within limited space, reduce antenna types, and enhance communication capabilities, an eight-unit dual-band 5G MIMO antenna array is proposed based on a monopole structure. The antenna operates in two frequency bands (3.23–4.14 GHz and 4.31–5.3 GHz), covering the n78 and n79 bands for 5G applications. The dual-band and miniaturized design of the antenna elements is achieved through the slotting and branch-loading techniques. The orthogonal placement of corner antenna elements is implemented to reduce coupling and optimize spatial utilization, achieving isolation of over 16 dB between elements. The introduction of a metasurface structure further improved isolation by 2 dB and increased the peak gain of the antenna array to 11.95 dBi. A prototype is fabricated and tested, demonstrating the following performance metrics: isolation exceeding 18 dB, gain ranging from 6 to 12 dBi, envelope correlation coefficient below 0.05, channel capacity greater than 41 bps/Hz, diversity gain of approximately 10 dB, total active reflection coefficient below −24 dB, and radiation efficiency exceeding 72%. These results confirm the superior performance of the proposed antenna design. Full article

This study presents a novel dual-band microstrip antenna operating at 28/38 GHz, which is designed for fifth generation (5G) and next-generation communications. The objective was to create a high-gain, single-element solution that addresses millimeter-wave (mmWave) challenges, like attenuation and signal loss, offering a more efficient alternative to complex array antennas. The antenna was designed using Rogers RT/duroid 5880 as a substrate, and CST simulations were used to optimize the return loss, gain, and efficiency. Analytical methods and parametric analyses were used to further optimize the design. Additionally, an SMP connector was integrated into the simulated model using Antenna Magus software, followed by further refinement through additional parametric studies. The final compact antenna (33 × 27 × 1.6 mm3) demonstrates excellent performance with simplified fabrication. The antenna achieved bandwidths of 1.12 GHz at 28 GHz and 1.27 GHz at 38 GHz, with remarkably low return loss values of −53.04 dB and −83.65 dB, respectively. The gain values reached 7.82 dBi at 28 GHz and 8.98 dBi at 38 GHz—prototype measurements closely aligned with simulations, confirming reliability. This study introduces a high-performance, single-element antenna that is both simple and complex. The meticulous optimization process, including SMP connector variations, minimized the fabrication sensitivity and improved the overall performance, thereby marking a significant advancement in antenna design. This study presents an innovative Dual-Band Frequency Selective Surface (FSS) designed for LTE applications, offering an effective solution for minimizing Passive Inter-Modulation (PIM) in contemporary wireless communication systems at the base station. The proposed passband FSS filter is designed to deliver optimal dual-band filtering characteristics with consistent stability over incidence angles up to 80°. Corresponding to antenna systems requirements, the proposed method gives resonant frequencies at 1.9 and 2.1 GHz which operate in the LTE band with bandwidths of 40 and 60 MHz, respectively. Moreover, the proposed design is analyzed to establish the optimal range for each resonant frequency by examining the parametric effects. The suggested FSS-based filter consists of a single-layer structure with the dimension of the unit cell of 0.33λ1 × 0.33λ1 where λ1 is the wavelength of low frequency, which delivers desired reflection and transmission coefficients using RT/Duroid 5880 with a thickness of 0.508 mm. The designed filter is validated through measurements of a fabricated prototype, demonstrating its practicality and performance. Simulations carried out with Equivalent Circuit Modeling (ECM) are demonstrated by measurements from a constructed 4 × 4 array prototype, showing a robust alignment with experimental findings. This work emphasizes an asymmetric FSS design that improves frequency selectivity and angular stability for the desired LTE dual band and also depicts the future possibilities for tuneable models and broader applications to meet the demands of modern wireless communication. High-sensitivity and large-scale surveys are essential in advancing radio astronomy, enabling detailed exploration of the universe. A Phased Array Feed (PAF) installed in the focal plane of a radio telescope significantly enhances mapping efficiency by increasing the instantaneous Field of View (FoV) and improving sky sampling capabilities. This paper presents the design and optimization of a novel C-Band Phased Array Feed antenna for the Sardinia Radio Telescope (SRT). The system features an 8 × 8 array of dual-polarized elements optimized to achieve a uniform beam pattern and an edge taper of approximately 5 dB for single radiating elements within the 3.0–7.7 GHz frequency range. The proposed antenna addresses key efficiency limitations identified in the PHAROS 2 (PHased Arrays for Reflector Observing Systems) system, including the under-illumination of the Sardinia Radio Telescope’s primary mirror caused by narrow sub-array radiation patterns. By expanding the operational bandwidth and refining the radiation characteristics, this new design enables significantly improved performance across the broader frequency range of 3.0–7.7 GHz, enhancing the telescope’s capability for wide-field, high-resolution observations. This paper presents a novel multi-layer, dual-band antenna array designed for WLAN and X-band applications, incorporating several innovative features. The design employs a pentagon-shaped radiating element with parasitic strips to enable dual-band operation. A dual-transformed feed network with chamfered feed strip corners minimizes radiation distortion and cross-polarization while introducing orthogonal phase shifts to achieve circular polarization (CP) at the X-band. A Fabry–Pérot structure, strategically placed above the array, enhances gain in the WLAN band. The antenna demonstrates an impedance bandwidth of 1.8 GHz (S11 < −10 dB) at the WLAN band, with 36% fractional bandwidth, and 4.3 GHz at the X-band, with 43% fractional bandwidth. Measured peak gains are 7 dBi for the WLAN band and 6.8 dBi for the X-band, with favourable S11 levels, omni-directional radiation patterns, and consistent gain across both bands. Circular polarization is achieved within 8.5–10.4 GHz. Experimental results confirm the array’s significant advancements in multi-band performance, making it highly suitable for diverse wireless communication applications. Full article

In this article, a novel method of achieving a single-layer, dual-band, dual-circularly polarized (CP) shared-aperture phased array antenna with wide beam scanning coverage is presented. The space antenna was designed to provide direct-to-cellular communications services at S-/C-bands with a frequency ratio of 1:1.8. Using novel ceramic substrates with high dielectric constants for antenna miniaturization, the optimum interelement spacing can be ensured in one single layer to meet the large-angle scanning demand. The CP characteristic of the phased array is improved by the sequential rotation technique. A prototype of phased array, which is composed of an 8 × 8 S-band Rx array and a 16 × 16 C-band Tx array, is fabricated to verify this design. A 2048-element dual-polarized receive (RX) phased array for Ku-band (10.7–12.7 GHz) satellite communication (SATCOM) is presented in this paper. The design of the multilayer printed circuit board (PCB) it uses adopts a novel copper paste sintering interconnection technology that allows for more flexibility in the design of vias and can reduce the PCB’s lamination number. This technology is more suitable for manufacturing multilayer and complex PCBs than traditional processes. The array is designed to consist of sixteen 8 × 16 element subarrays, each based on the silicon RX beamformer and multilayer PCB. Dual-polarized antenna elements are arranged in a regular rectangle with a spacing of 0.5 for a wavelength of 12.7 GHz, thus achieving a scanning range of ±70° in all planes. By adjusting the amplitude and phase of two line polarizations with cross-polarization levels better than −25 dB at boresight, the array can generate linear or circular polarization. Moreover, the antenna gain-to-noise temperature is above 12 dB/K (Tant = 20 K) at boresight. The aperture of the 2048-element RX phased array is 768 × 450 mm. With its low profile, the array is appropriate for usage in Ku-band SATCOM terminals. Full article
